Savage Mountain review – inside the record-smashing mountain climb that ruined lives

Former cross-country skiing champion, Kristin Harila had clocked an incredible mountaineering record – but then, halfway up K2, she and her team encountered an injured porter from another expedition …

Why climb a mountain? Really, there’s only one answer: to prove that you can – to yourself, to other people, to the world at large. Is that a good enough reason? Not always, as demonstrated by this thought-provoking but ultimately not particularly revealing documentary about Norwegian mountaineer Kristin Harila.

From the off, we know this won’t be a straightforwardly inspiring tale of an ordinary person performing incredible feats against all the odds. That, despite Harila being relatively ordinary – a competitive cross-country skier in her youth, she was working for a furniture company when she took up mountain climbing – and her indisputably incredible achievements. In 2023, she obliterated the speed record for reaching the world’s 14 highest peaks; the previous fastest time was just over six months; Harila did it in 92 days. The glory, however, was short-lived. In retrospect, the experience was “hell and a nightmare”, she says. Not so much because of the climbs themselves – although the mountainside footage suggests hellish and nightmarish to be broadly accurate descriptors – but because of something that happened during the final ascent, which cast a particularly bleak shadow over all of Harila’s efforts.

Nirmal Purja obituary

Former Gurkha soldier who became one of the most celebrated and controversial mountaineers of his generation

Nirmal Purja made his name in environments where life is reduced to its most elemental, and dangerous, terms. He believed, with an almost evangelical fervour, that “with relentless self-belief, anything is possible”. He spent his life testing the limits of that belief, first in military service and later on the world’s highest and most dangerous mountains. He has died aged 43 in an avalanche on Broad Peak, an 8,051-metre mountain in Pakistan.

Purja was the most celebrated and controversial mountaineer of the past decade. His ambitious, no-holds-barred approach to high-altitude climbing brought a new emphasis to the world’s highest peaks, prioritising speed, visibility and multiple back-to-back ascents within a single season. His methods helped propel Himalayan mountaineering into the influencer age, reshaping the way people saw, and climbed, the world’s tallest mountains. He was also an astute self-promoter, frequently broadcasting his climbs and exploits from the high camps themselves.

Some question why young women should climb mountains but hiking gives me freedom | Mohsina Gufran

Although trekking is unusual for young women in my area, I find strength and enjoy independence when I’m out in nature with my friends

Before sunrise, my two closest friends and I pack water bottles, food and biscuits into our backpacks. We put on whatever shoes we have, pull our hijabs tightly against the cold wind, and leave for the mountains above our village in Kargil.

The things we usually hear on the trail are birdsong, flowing water and our own laughter echoing through the mountains.

Dawa Sherpa is airlifted to hospital in Kathmandu, Nepal, after being found alive at Everest base camp during his funeral rites. The sherpa, also known as Hillary Dawa Sherpa after famed climber Edmund Hillary, was last seen on 29 May but did not reach base camp with other climbing groups. He was located six days later while crawling to the camp. The 52-year-old's teenage daughter, Mendo Lhamu Sherpa, says they were on the second day of a funeral ritual when they heard the news he was alive. 'When we first heard about it [the rescue], we could not be sure if that person was indeed our father,' she says. 'So to be certain we asked for photos to be sent and then only we were sure and very happy'

Missing Sherpa guide found alive on Everest after funeral rites had begun

John Hancock obituary

My brother-in-law, John Hancock, who has died aged 83, was a runner, climber, cyclist, socialist, naturalist and much loved village doctor. His most challenging adventure came in 1987 when he was expedition doctor on a UK attempt to climb Latok 2 in the Karakoram mountains in the Pakistani-administered Gilgit-Baltistan region.

The expedition photos show John relishing every moment. But it overran, and John was obliged to return to his practice, which led him to trek solo for several days back to civilisation. En route, he loved making contact with local people and was glad to hold impromptu clinics in the villages he passed through.

From mountain photography to ice-climbing – try it all at this summer festival in the French Alps

Improve your mountain skills by day and party by night at the Arc’teryx Alpine Academy in Chamonix

After a day spent hiking across the Col d’Entrèves glacier, a sugar hit is required. I descend on the cable car and join the queue at the ice-cream counter. Above me, surrounded by jagged peaks, looms the huge white figure of Mont Blanc, serene and pure against a brilliant blue sky. Although it’s late afternoon, people are still heading up the mountain, and there are two clear groups. On one side are the tourists, who are about to be lifted into unfamiliar frozen realms at 3,375 metres (11,072ft), hoping to grab a picture and return. Mixed among them are the weathered faces of mountain experts: hikers confidently heading for a high-altitude hut, or climbers with coils of rope.

How many of those tourists, I wonder, are wishing they could be mountaineers, secretly regretting the twists of fate that kept them away from that path? But all is not lost. The aspiring adventurer, no matter what age or background, can begin the journey to competence in the mountains. The annual mountain festival I am attending aims to facilitate that by offering the chance to gain hands-on experience with experts.

My partner, Steve Lismore, who has died aged 71 in a climbing accident in Italy, was a civil servant and local politician with twin passions for giving children a good start in life and establishing equality of access to employment. Steve’s energy and commitment to action has had a lasting impact across north Derbyshire.

Born in Toronto, Canada, to Violet (nee Greaves), a secretary, and Basil Lismore, a toolmaker, Steve loved reading and excelled at Bayview Heights school, Ontario, skipping a grade and winning awards at science fairs.
