Freediving Courses Dahab - April 2012

It was an amazing week at World of Freediving here in Dahab. We had a lot of really great people taking courses with us and both Katya and I would like to thank everyone for making our courses fun and Enjoyable!!

Congratulations to Julian Garrido who completed his AIDA 4 Star and Instructor Courses with us, Graham Cowley , Jan Guera, Kelibek and Oleg who successfully completed the AIDA 2 star program and Sue, Katharina , Andy Grixti and Julia Hett who finished their AIDA 1 Star program.

Andy and Julia … special thanks to both of you for showing me and Harry that you are never too old to live life to the fullest! You two lovely ladies will be remembered in the world of Freediving history books for a long time to come.

You were all a great pleasure to work with and we look forward to seeing you back in Dahab soon!!

Разместив информацию о курсах фридайвинга в Дахабе на весну (см. на www.worldoffreediving.com) мы благополучно уехали в отпуск - фридайв-разведку в ЮВ Азию. В планах было заехать в гости к коллегам-фридайверам в Таиланд, посетить о-в Ява, а также обнырять новые места в Камбодже и на Бали.

Этот маршрут мы прозвали "Ледокол"

Удобно нырять в Таиланде - это уже знакомая фридайверам территория. Хочешь окунуться в Сиамском заливе? Пожалуй на остров Ко Тао, там есть огромные, но мирные, китовые акулы. Пожелаешь водички прозрачней, пожалуйста, вот тебе Пхукет и Ко Ланта в Андаманском море. Кстати о последнем, по моему скромному мнению подводный мир Андаманского моря на порядок богаче, чем в заливе Сиама, и видимость лучше. В любом случае, какой остров ни выбери, если глубина вашего ныряния превышает 10м, то без лодки не обойтись. В отсутствии глубины близко к берегу и заключается главный недостаток Таиланда в целом, именно недостаток, но не проблема, поскольку организовать лодку очень легко и любая школа фридайвинга сделает это в два счета.

А этот - "Пасть"

А вот в чем в Таиланде нет недостатка, так это в скалолазных массивах. Юг страны - это обилие известняковых гор, детскими пасочками растущих из земли. Такие необычные, они множеством каверн, натеков и сталактитов они напоминают пещеру, вывернутую наружу. А маршруты там ух... закачаешься! Самая сложная стена идет прямо вдоль моря, в прилив волны бьются о маршруты. Как приятно окунуть в водичку натруженную на скалах тушку! Правда метров на 100 от берега идет мель и вода на ней градусов 32С (не вздумайте делать там статику), но это мелочи. На очень красивом пляже на другой стороне полуострова достаточно глубины, чтобы поплавать с маской, посмотреть на кораллы и рыбок. Мы даже видели большую черепаху и очень близко! К слову о местонахождении - это провинция Краби, п-ов назвается Ray Lai. Оттуда ходят катера на Пхукет, а из Краби-тауна легко добраться до Ко Ланты.

В Камбодже первым делом мы приехали в Сиануквилль. Из интернета было вычитано, что вдоль самого побережья фридайверу делать нечего и мы рванули на Koh Russei или по-местному Bamboo Island (название - чистой воды поэтика, как раз бамбук там не растет совсем). Остров насчитывает пару дюжин незамысловатых бунгало а-ля 4 стены и крыша, зато какая близость к морю и какие закаты! Мы потерли ручки, зашли в воду... и оказалось, что с одной стороны острова сплошной песок и мелко в пределах разумного плавания, а с другой - хоть есть камни и кораллы, но тоже мелко и прозрачность везде низкая. Лодок, на которых можно было бы выехать поискать глубину нет, только редкие транспорты приезжают-уезжают днем.

Вычитали мы далее, что восточнее есть местечко Кеп, а из него ходят лодки на Rabbit Island. Мы перебрались туда, но в воде ситуация оказалась схожей с той, что была на предыдущем острове, только видимость совсем плохая, хотя само по себе место красивое и приятное... Так мы и не нашли места где бы в глубину понырять. Вывод напрашивается такой: надо ехать компанией человек 4-6, останавливаться в гостинице на материке, там же нанимать рыбацкую людку хоть каждый день и ездить в море в поисках глубины, на островах все равно толку мало... Посмотрим, что будет на Бали, а пока что мы на Яве активно наслаждаемся не слишком активными вулканами и имеющимимся тут же в обилии горячими источниками и грязевыми ваннами.

Details are available on our web site, www,.worldoffreediving.net.... on a slightly different note...After several over stimulating Volcano experiences here in Indonesia we are off to Bali to do some spearfishing and I am looking forward to eating some wonderful fresh seafood very very soon. Check out the photo's from Papandayan, a very active volcano that you can visit here with no guide, no signs...just you and the mountain...and Surfer dioxide, bubbling mud and steam coming out of every crack. If you go get a guide as it will give you peace of mind while you walk around.

AIDA freediving instructor course in Dahab, Egypt- April 15th 2012

For freedivers looking to become freediving instructors...World of Freediving will be running an AIDA instructor course in Dahab, Egypt on the 15th of April 2012. The course will start on the 15th and finish on the 27th. This is a profession level program so candidates should possess solid freediving skills to attend this program. Course cost is 1000 euro and registration will close on the 15th of March 2012. A 200 euro deposit is required on registration. Freediving Courses- AIDA Instructor Courses In Dahab

World of Freediving is now an AIDA instructor training center. For individuals looking to become professional freediving instructors the AIDA IC presents the knowledge, and experience you will need to become an effective freediving instructor. Last month we conducted two instructor courses here in Dahab; One in English and one in Russian…both of which were a big success.

The Russian course took place in early November and was actually a milestone for AIDA education. This was the first instructor course in the history of AIDA to be run fully in Russian by Russians speaking Instructor trainers. Katya Smirnova from Ukraine and Konstantin Borisov from Russia were the instructor trainers responsible for this course. It was a historic event indeed with one of the world’s most well known freedivers, Alexey Molchanov attending this program. The days were long, the candidates worked hard, but at the end of it everyone was satisfied with the results. It was very nice to see the enthusiasm from all sides and we look forward to the next Russian IC coming in the near future. Congratulations to Alena Molchanova, Lena Petrushina, and Pavel Shishkin for completing this program.

Our English course met with some interesting challenges, and turned out to be a good learning experience for all parties in involved. It is a funny thing actually…though this course was conducted fully in English, not a single one of the Candidates spoke English as their first language. On the courses we had Maxim Iskander - French Canadian/Egyptian, Andreas Peper – Germany, and Alex Kovelev – Russia. I guess all those classes on intercultural relations that I took in Business school finally paid off by allowing me to work with such a diverse group of people. Thank you University of Alberta! I believe it also helped that we all have one thing in common, the love of the sea and freediving. I really enjoyed teaching this course! It was great to have such a talented group of freedivers and well motivated learners on this instructor course and only hope to be this lucky with students in the future. Congratulations to all you guys for finishing this program with us. I would also like to say a special thanks to Konstantin and Katya for assisting with this course.

Freediving and Spearfishing In Ukraine

We have been enjoying our summer in Ukraine and have had a great chance to do some interesting diving here. Thanks to good fortune, we are staying not to far from one of the best spear fishing areas in Ukraine, which has allowed us the chance to get in the water spearing quite a few time this year. The Nipper is one of the most interesting diving areas I have had the chance to diving in. Often the viability is quit low and if you see a fish you better be on your game or he will be gone into the dark water before you can think twice.

On one of our diving trips, my friend and I were doing some diving close to town. We were in the water for some 3 hours with very little luck. Then suddenly out of nowhere a nice sized carp came swimming in front of me. I made the shot and managed to bring it in. My friend who I was diving with however was not fortunate enough to find any fish that day. He did however receive another gift from the river. Some how in this mercy water he managed to come across a rather large pink dildo. I guess its possible to take it as some king do enigmatic message from god, but at the end of the day it is just a ridiculously funny find. The photo to the right shows our respective catch for the day. Diving in Ukraine is full of surprises and I'm not sure what we will find next when we journey to the Black see for some more freediving and spear fishing.

Some Nice Dynamics in Brian's pool. This little pool is an amazing addition to the freediving community in Dahab. Freedivers in Dahab can put together a solid training plan, including pool training now.

Начало апреля 2011г. в Дахабе ознаменовалось торжественным тестированием и запуском в эксплуатацию Первого в Дахабе фридайверского бассейна имени Брайана. Троекратное УРА!!!

Серьезно. Дахаб знаменит как место, идеально подходящее для тренировок и соревнований в глубинных дисциплинах, а вот с практикой бассейных дисциплин здесь всегда было туговато по причине отсутствия нормального плавательного бассейна. Конечно, желающие ухитрялись делать статику в море, а динамику в красивых по форме (и оттого неудобных) бассейнах отелей, но это же не то пальто, господа...

И вот Брайан, английский инструктор по фридайвингу, переехавший в Дахаб пару лет назад, задумал и воплотил в жизнь то, до чего не додумался никто до него. Он самостоятельно осуществил проект по постройке бассейна исключительно для занятий по фридайвингу. И бассейн получился, надо сказать, прекрасный! Длиной 30м, глубиной 2м и шириной тоже около 2м, он представляет собой классическую плавательную дорожку. Вода с нем пресная, очищенная ультрафиолетом, и подогревается до 28⁰С солнечными батареями. "Энвайроментал френдли" - говорят по-английски.

10 Апреля в новом бассейне уже прошли соревнования под названием "1st Brian pool competition", организованные содружеством инструкторов AIDA, проживающих на месте (Брайан, Дин, Вэнди, Ана). Судьями были Костя Борисов и Катя Смирнова. Среди участников были фридайв-резиденты и гости Дахаба. Тест бассейна прошел успешно, нареканий не возникло, атмосфера сложилась теплая и дружественная, и вобще все остались очень довольны.

Бассейн Брайана открыт для всех фридайв-жаждущих, будь то просто желающий поплавать в хорошей водичке или инструктор со студентами.

Brain's Pool Competition Dahab - AIDA comp

AIDA Pool Competition Dahab (Brian’s Pool Comp)

Brian’s Pool comp turned out to be a great success. We ran the competition on a single day, had a good number of competitors a long with a lot of fun. It was the first AIDA pool completion to be run at this facility (by facility I mean Brian’s House), but I have the feeling many more will come. The completion when off without a hitch… with almost no black outs. Remy, one of the French competitors coached by Linda, ended up having an amazing samba after pushing somewhere over 6 min. The debate is still on as to whether it was a BO or LMC but at the end of it he missed the surface protocol by 2 sec anyways. He gave a good fight though and managed to keep his head out of the water. I have to say from an entertainment standpoint that it’s the best samba I’ve seen since the Sofas Dance at the worlds in Sharm 2 years ago. He was looking for a clean finish but instead provided some good entertainment for the spectators, which will keep them coming back.

Anna did well wining the 3 first place prizes in the woman’s category. This was partially due to her exceptional ability as a freediver, and to the fact that the other female competitors were only competing in static. Congratulations Anna.

The AIDA Spring Freedive Festival - Dahab

This is an event for freedivers of every level, a gathering of like minded people who share the same passion. Freediving with Dolphins

Dolphins in Dahab

We were at Light House today to do some freediving with some students who were finishing a courses, and at the end of it all we spent the better part of the morning freediving with two beautiful Dolphins. There was a mama Dolphin with a baby swimming on the far side of the bay. We saw them from a distance at first, but then I decided to take my mask and snorkel and run over to the bridge where we had seen them. Sure enough the first 10 minutes nothing, but then Wendy, who had also come down to the bridge, spotted them below us. What an amazing site! These two beautiful animals just swam around us seemingly undisturbed by the growing crowd. We spent quite a while with them in the water. To be honest, I could have spent the whole day there. I’d have to say that this was one of the best days I’ve ever had freediving at the Light Houses. Below is a picture of the same situation somewhere not in Dahab. They are the same dolphins though. Unfortunately this was the one day we didn’t have a camera with us.

The winds of Dahab

Just a few days ago a wonderful event occurred here in Dahab that provided a great deal of entertainment for Dahab locals as well as a lot of extra work and stress for restaurant owners. The famed south winds of the red sea showed there face on Dec 11^th and made an amazing mess of both the blue hole and the light houses diving area. We had some courses running at the time and were on our way to Nirvana dive club to meet our students when we noticed that there was something not quite right with the way the wind was blowing. As we approached the lighthouses there was an enormous amount of mist falling on us. I asked Katya “Is it raining”, but just then someone close by heard my question and relied that the waves were so big they were creating a mist that was raining in on the parking lot.

We walked our way through the parking lot to the beach and what we saw was indeed interesting. Massive waves were crashing into all the manmade structures on the beach creating an impressive sceptical. The spray from the waves was shooting into the air 10 meters or so and completely destroying all the structures on the beach. If it wasn’t for the stone walls that were built on the beach most of the waves would have simply rolled out and done no damage at all. I guess thanks to all the restaurant owners for putting money into these walls so as to provide hours of entertainment for all us Dahab locals twice a year, when the wind comes and crashes into the beach.

Needless to say that we didn’t do any diving that day; There were some Russian scuba divers that decided to brave the waves but had a hard time getting out of the water after the dive. There was also one Egyptian man that tried to save one of the many fishing boats that sank. He nearly died when a large wave flipped the boat on top of him. Some people pulled the guy out of the water but the boat didn’t make it. He suffered a broken leg, but was very lucky not to have lost his life. In spite of all the antics it was something quite nice to watch; and though we didn’t finish our courses that day, our students got to enjoy watching the power of mother nature tearing apart the beach at Light House.
