the good:

The ViewSonic ViewPad 7 delivers Android 2.2 on a 7-inch screen, with a powerful processor and rear- and front- facing cameras.
The bad:

The ViewPad 7 is a doppelganger for the Samsung Galaxy Tab and shares many of its shortcomings, including a frustrating keyboard and awkward size. Lacks camera flash. Bring your own memory card.
The bottom line:

The ViewPad 7 offers a solid platform for Android 2.2, but it comes off as an oversize, overpriced smartphone--not a Netbook alternative.

The ViewSonic ViewPad 7 is a 7-inch Android tablet that answers the call for a carrier-agnostic alternative to the Samsung Galaxy Tab. Priced around $450, the ViewPad 7 offers an impressive spec sheet, Android Market access, and all the accoutrements of Android 2.2. It isn't an iPad killer, but its accessible SIM and memory card make it one of the most flexible high-end Android tablets available.
Design

The ViewPad 7 is a bit of a brick, with its squared-off edges and paperback dimensions. A few editors remarked on how the silver plastic bezel that wraps around the edge makes it look like a giant iPhone 4. Measuring 4.3 inches tall, 7 inches wide, and .5 inch thick, the ViewPad 7 is slightly more pocketable than the Galaxy Tab, and takes up less than half the space of an iPad.
The screen sports an 800x480 resolution, and is covered with scratch-resistant glass. Like on most Android products, there are four touch-sensitive buttons that run along the screen, providing keys for Home, Menu, Search, and Back. We think ViewSonic's home button looks more like a mushroom cloud than a house, but maybe that says more about us than the product.
A front-facing 0.3-megapixel camera is squeezed into the top left corner of the screen, and is compatible with video chat applications such as Fring. On the back, a 3-megapixel camera sits near the center, but lacks the camera flash found on similar Android tablets, such as the Dell Streak and Galaxy Tab. Still, two cameras are better than none--which is what you'd get on the iPad.
The bottom of the ViewPad 7 includes ports for USB (data/charge) and headphones. A nice headset is included with multiple ear-tip fittings, remote button, and microphone (for voice calls and voice search). Slim speaker grilles are found on the left and right edges, along with a power button on the left that doubles as a sleep/wake control. Across the top you'll find volume buttons and a covered port for a microSD memory card and cellular SIM card.
Overall, the hardware design is solid and well-executed, if a bit forgettable, like many tablets. Unfortunately, once you boot it up, the bloom comes off the rose. A minimum of effort seems to have gone into applying the user interface of the Android 2.2 OS to the ViewPad's 7-inch screen. For example, the dock positions a call button as a primary feature. Granted, the ViewPad's voice-calling feature works well (provided you supply your own SIM card), but it seems an unlikely primary use.
The lack of interface polish really rears its head when you use the onscreen keyboard. There are three keyboard layouts available: QWERTY, 12-key (with letters grouped three per button, as on a feature phone), and CooTek T+. You can switch between keyboard layouts by swiping left and right (a fact not immediately apparent), but the end result is an unnecessary kludge of mobile phone keyboards on a device that really deserves one great QWERTY. Instead, you get a QWERTY that lacks multitouch support and hides common characters such as exclamation marks. With e-mail and messaging being such a big part of why people are drawn to tablets, a half-baked keyboard is a big negative.
Features

The ViewPad 7 offers the full, undiluted Android 2.2 experience, and includes the official Android Market for all the latest and greatest apps. We've seen other Android tablets this same size, but so far only the Galaxy Tab can match the ViewPad's support for Android 2.2 with Android Market.

Gaming to be a “key component” of Windows 8 development

ccording to a source that has tipped off Techradar, Microsoft plans to use Windows 8 as an opportunity to “relaunch PC gaming.” Recently hired Rahul Sood, who had founded luxury computer manfacturer Vodoo PC, was quoted saying that

“Windows 8 will represent a real new push into PC gaming, … Gaming will be a key component for the whole OS.“

The company has induced some efforts such as the Games for Windows Marketplace in attempts to fuel PC gaming and take more control of the industry, which seems to be dominated by the ever-increasing library of Valve’s Steam.
These efforts haven’t necessarily caused a revolution per se, but it looks like Microsoft is hoping Windows 8 will change all this.

The good: One of the fastest budget PCs we've tested; wireless networking and HDMI port make it perfect for the living room; room to upgrade via free expansion card slot.
The bad: Only USB 2.0 for data connections; had to manually correct overscanning when we connected it to an HDTV.
The bottom line: The latest in Gateway's line of versatile slim towers, the SX2850-33 stays current with a fast Intel Core i3 CPU, and more importantly adds Wi-Fi to improve its suitability as a living-room desktop. It might cost more than a Nettop or a dedicated video-streaming device, but for its overall speed and flexibility, we'd pick this system as a budget PC or an online living-room content center.

Review:

The Gateway SX2850-33 is one of a wide selection of Gateway slim tower desktops. As with the others we've seen, this model works well as a budget PC, and it also has the right design and feature set for living-room content delivery. The $549 SX2850-33 is no cheap Nettop, but it also offers the performance and most of the connectivity options we expect from a PC in this price range. Wireless networking and a fast, up-to-date Intel Core i3 dual-core CPU separate the SX2850-33 from the other SX models, in exchange for a hard-drive space reduction and fewer connectivity options. This system's Wi-Fi card alone, a rarity in the SX line, may be enough to earn this desktop fans among living-room PC enthusiasts. We'd also recommend it to anyone interested in a small, capable budget desktop.
The SX case is over a year old at this point. Perhaps that's not quite enough time to justify a redesign, especially when the current design is attractive enough, but we can't help thinking that we'd like to see a new take on this PC. Maybe it's because we've already reviewed three of them. In any case, we don't expect many people will be offended by the black and silver plastic exterior. From an aesthetic standpoint, you can put the SX2850-33 anywhere.
Thanks to its HDMI video output and wireless networking capabilities, this system's technology also lends some flexibility to how you might use it. You get a traditional VGA video output as well, so you can connect this system to most, if not all, monitors on the market. The HDMI port also makes this system a near-seamless living-room resident. The wireless networking helps minimize cable clutter, always a bonus when you're installing a PC in a nontraditional space, and you get a single standard network adapter for wired connections.

Other vendors have PCs that would seem to compete with the SX2850-33, but Gateway has consistently nailed the formula for this kind of computer, which means that the decision arguably boils down to choosing which Gateway SX2800 model to buy. We last reviewed the SX2801-01e, which retails for roughly the same price as the SX2850-33, but you'll find several differences between the two.
The SX2801-01e uses an older, slower Intel chip and only comes with a wired Internet connection, but it does feature a larger hard drive and more RAM than the SX2850-33e. Practically speaking, the extra memory doesn't make a huge difference in the range of tasks these PCs can perform--you won't be editing large HD video files with either, for example, so the primary difference comes down to choosing faster overall performance and wireless networking or an extra 360GB of hard-drive space for about the same price. Given the SX2850-33's performance edge, we'd happily sacrifice the extra drive space.

The Gateway SX2850-33 outperforms both its linemate and competing desktops in its price range on almost every performance test. That Dell Inspiron i570 enjoys an edge on our multicore CPU test due to its true quad-core AMD CPU, but the Intel Core i3 530 chip in the Gateway is fast enough to outperform it elsewhere, and the Dell's multicore edge is minimal. All of these PCs are relatively capable, but the Gateway SX2850-33 should provide a noticeable performance benefit in day-to-day use.
We also found that the Gateway provided flawless HD movie playback, at least for HD YouTube and QuickTime content. It had no trouble with less demanding sources like Netflix and Hulu, and we were also impressed with its gaming capabilities. This is not a gaming desktop, and we expect you will come across many titles this PC won't be able to manage, particularly more recent shooters. We were pleasantly surprised, though, to find that it provided a playable Portal experience, even at 1,920x1,080. We would expect a similar experience for other less-demanding games like World of Warcraft, the Sims series, Civilization V, and others.
If you have more demanding gaming needs, you could always add a graphics card to this PC, although you're limited to budget-level half-height 3D cards due to its narrow case. There's also room for two more memory sticks, but that's all the internal expansion room. The lone hard-drive bay is occupied, and the 802.11 b/g/n wireless card sits in the 1X PCI Express slot.

BERLIN--In 2011, Sony plans to join the small set of companies that offers laptops that can display 3D video and games at 1080p resolution.
The company showed off prototypes of a forthcoming Vaio laptop at the IFA electronics show here Wednesday, models that come with a "3D" button and active-shutter glasses to separate what the right and left eyes see.

"3D Vaios will debut next spring," Howard Stringer, Sony's chief executive, said in a press conference touting 3D technology and Sony's commitment to it. Sony also touted other 3D products and content at the show.
The protoypes shown at IFA use "frame-sequential" technology that rapidly cycles the full screen between left-eye and right-eye views, with blank screens in between each to reduce the "crosstalk" that can reduce 3D image quality.
That means the laptop must be able to display video at 240 frames per second to keep up with a 3D rate of 60 frames per second. Sony wouldn't reveal whose graphics chip is used in the system. Sony's also cautioned that the ultimate products may be different from the prototypes it showed.

The 3D Vaio comes with a 3D button to set it for use in 3D mode. Otherwise, it behaves like a normal laptop with 1,920x1080-pixel resolution.

IFA, like electronics shows before it, has become a showcase for 3D technology. Many people are indifferent or even hostile about the technology so far, or at least unwilling to pay the necessary premium, but it's also making steady inroads across the electronics and computing industry.
Sony also announced at IFA that some existing Blu-ray players and PlayStation 3 will be retrofitted with new firmware making them 3D-capable. Among 3D game titles Stringer showed were Tumble, the Sly Trilogy, Mortal Kombat, Virtual Tennis 4, Killzone 3, Super Stardust HD, The Fight, Motor Storm Apocalypse, and MLB baseball.
For those who want a really big screen experience, Sony announced a 3D video projector, the WV-90. It will use the same active-shutter system as Sony's Bravia TVs, meaning that the required glasses will work across the line.
The entire press conference was displayed live on a large screen above the stage. Sony opted to use Real D's 3D technology, which today is found in many movie cinemas. Panasonic, which also tooted its 3D horn at IFA, opted instead to use an array of 54 of its own plasma TV screens. Sony, it should be noted, also sells digital cinema projectors and high-end 3D cameras, including some used to shoot the movie Avatar.
Sony, unlike some of its competitors, is a content company. Here, the company plans to tackle 3D aggressively, too.

Sony's prototype Vaio laptop with 1080p 3D display is designed to show 3D movies or games.

Sony also plans to launch its own 3D TV channel, Stringer said, with content to include natural history, children's programming, science, and motion pictures, Stringer said. And Sony Pictures plans several 3D movies soon: "Resident Evil Afterlife," "The Green Hornet," another "Spider-Man" sequel, and another "Men in Black" sequel.
"Being shot in 3D doesn't automatically guarantee success," Stringer said. "What counts is how well you tell a story. A hit is a still a hit is still a hit--except in 3D it's a bigger hit."
And then there are the staples. Sony plans to release by the end of 2010 a Blu-ray disk of highlights of the World Cup soccer tournament, Stringer said.

Subject: Have you locked your keys in the car?

On some Nokia phones, users can punch in special codes and toggle between speech codec modes to 1) enhance voice transmission quality at the cost of diminished battery performance, or 2) enhance battery performance by decreasing voice quality. Not exactly. On some cell phone models, but not all, pressing *#06# will cause the phone's 15-digit International Mobile Equipment Identity to be displayed. Some service providers, but not all, can use that information to deactivate the handset. In any case, it isn't necessary to supply an IMEI number to cancel your cellular account in the event of theft; simply call your provider, give them the appropriate account information, and tell them the phone was stolen.

tips to maximize your battery performance
Some functions in your phone may consume more battery, leading to a shorter battery time. In order to maximise your battery performance, make sure you switch off functions you don't use, such as Bluetooth™, and lower the screen brightness.

Xperia™ X8

To decrease the brightness of the screen:

From the Home screen, find and tap Settings.
Tap Sound & display.
Scroll to Display settings and tap Brightness.
Drag the slider to the left.
Tap OK.

To turn off Bluetooth™:

From the Home screen, find and tap Settings.
Tap Wireless controls.
Unmark the Bluetooth checkbox.

Other useful tips to maximise battery performance:

Only use location services when needed.
Turn off push email and synchronise your mailboxes manually.
Minimise the use of third-party applications.
Charge your phone often. The battery lasts longer if you charge it frequently.
If you are in an area with no coverage, your phone repeatedly scans for available networks, which consumes power. If you can't move to an area with better coverage, turn off your phone temporarily or use Flight mode.
Browse the web with Wi-Fi™ rather than mobile data networks and turn off Wi-Fi™ when not in use.
Close running applications when not in use.

Copy contacts between two phones

You can copy and transfer contacts between two phones using Sony Ericsson Sync or a SIM card. Primarily we recommend that you use the Sony Ericsson Sync service to copy and transfer contacts between two phones. Sony Ericsson Sync is fast and easy to set up and lets you copy your contacts in a simple and secure way. It is also free and lets you synchronise your phone contacts, calendar, tasks, bookmarks and notes with the Sony Ericsson website over the air.
Note: If you use a SIM card to transfer your contacts, only names and one phone number are transferred to the other phone.

To transfer your contacts with Sony Ericsson Sync:

On the computer: Go to Sony Ericsson Sync and login with your Sony Ericsson account or click Sign up and follow the instructions.
Under Transfer info from old phone, click Transfer info > Start.
Choose your old phone and click Next.
Enter your country and phone number and click Next.
A PIN code, that is to be used on your old phone, is shown and a configuration SMS is sent to your old phone.
On your old phone: Select Yes to install settings and enter the PIN code.
On the computer: Follow the instructions on the screen on how to synchronise your old phone. Click Next.
If necessary, click Change phone model to select your new phone, if not already selected. Click Next.
On your old phone: Turn your old phone off and remove the SIM card.
On your new phone: Insert the SIM card and turn on your new phone.
Follow the instructions on the screen on how to synchronise your new phone.

To transfer your contacts via the SIM card:

Copy your contacts from your old phone to your SIM card. If you need help with this, please consult the user guide of your old phone.
When the copying is done, move the SIM card to your new phone.
From the Home screen, find and tap Contacts.
Press the Menu key and tap Import/export.
Tap Import from SIM card.

rearrange the corners
Personalise your phone and rearrange the corners on the Home screen. Use any application from the applications panes, or your favourite bookmarks as corners.
Note: Corners are the actual applications, not shortcuts to applications.
To rearrange the corners:

From the Home screen, press the Menu key.
Tap Arrange icons.
Touch and hold an item in the applications panes and then drag it to one of the corners. You can also transfer an item to and from the applications panes and any corner.
Press the Back key to exit the edit mode.

Synchronise your phone Via the Sony Ericsson website
Synchronise your phone contacts, calendar, tasks, bookmarks and notes with the Sony Ericsson website over the air. It is easy!
To sync via the Sony Ericsson website, you need to have Internet settings installed in your phone. For assistance, contact your operator. You can easily use additional phones with the same account, which is very convenient if you buy a new phone or lose your old one.
Note: The only cost for using Sony Ericsson Sync is your operator's fee for transferring the data to and from your phone.
To transfer your contacts with Sony Ericsson Sync and set up a new account:

On the computer: Go to Sony Ericsson Sync and click Sign up.
Select your phone model and enter email and password details.
Click Sign up.
Under Get started with sync, click Set up sync > Start.
Confirm your phone model and click Next.
Enter your country and phone number and click Next.
A PIN code is shown and a configuration SMS is sent to your phone.
On your phone: Select Yes to install settings and enter the PIN code.
Synchronise on your phone.

To synchronise on your phone:

From the Home screen, find and tap Sync.

Note: You need to set the correct date and time on your phone for Sony Ericsson Sync to work.

Use the Walkman player
Use the music player in your phone to listen to music, podcasts or audiobooks. Transfer music to your phone from your computer, buy directly from your phone with PlayNow™, or stream from the Internet.
In the music player, you can browse your music by track or artist and view information about the current music file.
Tip: Minimise the music player to use other functions on your phone while listening to music.
To listen to music:

From the Home screen, find and tap Music player.
Tap the Browse music on the memory card icon at the top left corner of the screen.
Locate your track in the Artist or Track tab.
Tap a track to play.

Tip: To return to the music player when it is playing in the background, drag the status bar downwards to open the Notification panel. Then tap the track title to open the music player.

A wireless LAN or WLAN is a wireless local area network. WLAN gives users the mobility to move around within a broad coverage area and still be connected to the network. You can connect to the Internet wireless via your home network or via a hotspot. Hotspots are often available at train stations, airports, universities, libraries, hotels and other public places.

To connect to a WLAN via Wi-Fi™:

From the Home screen, find and tap Settings.
Tap Wireless controls > Wi-Fi settings.
Mark the Wi-Fi checkbox. Available Wi-Fi™ networks are displayed in a list under Wi-Fi networks. The available networks may be open or secured. This is indicated by the icon next to the network name.
Tap a Wi-Fi™ network to connect to it. If you are trying to connect to a secured Wi-Fi™ network, you are asked to enter the security key for that Wi-Fi™ network before you can connect to it. The Wi-Fi™ connection is displayed in the status bar once you are connected.

Useful tip:

The next time you connect to a Wi-Fi™ network, the phone will remember the security key.
To enable Wi-Fi™ network notification of open networks, mark the Network notification checkbox.
To connect to another Wi-Fi™ network, just tap another Wi-Fi™ network in the Wi-Fi networks list.
To scan for Wi-Fi™ networks manually, press the Menu key and tap Scan. The phone scans for Wi-Fi™ networks and displays them in the Wi-Fi networks section.

Change settings for applications

All the applications you download are saved to the memory card. You can always change settings for applications.

To change settings for downloaded applications:

From the Home screen, find and tap Settings.
Tap Applications > Manage applications.
Scroll through the list and tap the desired application.
Select your options.
When done, press the Back key.

To download applications from websites other than Market:

From the Home screen, find and tap Settings.
Tap Applications.
Mark the Unknown sources checkbox.

Note: To protect your phone and personal data, only download applications from trusted sources.
