World's Most Beautiful Atriums

In modern architecture, an atrium (plural: atria) is a large open space, often several stories high and having a glazed roof and/or large windows, often situated within a larger multistory building and often located immediately beyond the main entrance doors. Atria are a popular design feature because they give their buildings a feeling of space and light. Fire control is an important aspect of contemporary atrium design due to criticism that poorly designed atria could allow fire to spread to a building's upper stories more quickly.

As of 2007, Dubai's Burj Al Arab, has the tallest atrium. The Burj Al Arab was built to impress and to iconize the urban development in the city of Dubai.

Hammerhead Shark Giving Birth On Beach in Florida

An inconsiderate fisherman caused a hammerhead shark to give birth before a large audience on a Florida beach. According to the Daily Mail UK, a fisherman pulled a 5-foot-long, pregnant hammerhead onto the shore of Panama City Beach in Florida, causing the animal to go into shock and have her babies.

A crowd quickly gathered around the shallow water where the shark mom was settled to get a better look at the creature. Onlookers soon noticed that the animal was giving birth while thrashing on the sand. Several animal lovers near the scene tried to drag the shark back into water, but said the predator continued to swim to the shore.

Park rangers arrived shortly after the incident to help the shark, but sadly the animal passed away. Things turned out better for the sharks' surprise pups. Hammerhead pups are extremely independent and often swim away from their mom shortly after birth, as was the case with these newborns. They will spend the next few weeks fending for themselves in the shallow waters around the beach before heading into the ocean.

This shocking sight is just one of an increasing number of hammerhead sightings around Florida. The sharks are often seen in shallow reefs or following fishing boats. Hammerheads are not known for attacking humans and usually go after smaller prey.

This square outside parliament in Bern, Switzerland was covered in 15 tons of coins by activists, a total of $438,885 (400,000 francs). But this is not charity money, the initiative aims to have a minimum monthly disposal household income of CHF 2,500 (US$ 2,700) given by the government to every citizen living in Switzerland.

The world’s first inflatable concert hall is all set to debut this weekend, hosting a number of special events in northeastern island of Honshu Japan, the region devastated by 2011’s quáke and t§unámi.

The extraordinary purple and red structure, which can hold around 500 people, was the idea of Lucerne Festival’s artistic and executive director Michael Haefliger, who worked with British artist and sculptor Anish Kapoor and Japanese architect Arata Isozaki to make it a reality.

Comprising a coated polyester material, Ark Nova, which is 18 meters high and 35 meters wide, can be quickly deflated, allowing for easy transportation to other locations.

Looking more like something out of The Lorax than what you would find in Africa's Kalahari Desert, these fantastically decorated telephone poles are actually home to the aptly named Sociable Weaver bird.

The communist little soarers don't just build massive homes for their own kind—they even allow other species of birds to settle down in the nests, which could very well hold up to 100 birds at a time. According to the San Diego Zoo, the South African pygmy falcon Polihierax semitorquatus (otherwise known in layman's terms as good-for-nothing squatters) "relies completely on the sociable weavers' nest for its own home, often nesting side by side with the sociable weavers.

Photographer Dillon Marsh has an entire series on these whimsical bird colonies called Assimilation. A few of the nests even look big enough for a human to crawl into, although its hard to imagine we'd be greeted with quite the same open wings as their feathered brethren.

The World Islands is an artificial archipelago consisting of about 300 small islands constructed in the rough shape of a world map, located 4.0 kilometers off the coast of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The islands are composed mainly of sand dredged from Dubai's shallow coastal waters. 321 million cubic meters of sand and 31 million tons of rock were used to build the islands that cover an area roughly 6 by 9 kilometers, and is surrounded by an oval-shaped breakwater island.

The islands, which are named after countries such as Great Britain, Germany, Switzerland, etc., themselves range from 14,000 to 42,000 square meters in area and located roughly 100 meters from each other.

The Horses of Iceland

The first time I saw an Icelandic Horse, it was laying on the ground, on its side. “Horses don’t lay down”, I thought. “It must be dead!” And then it rolled onto its back, all the way over onto its other side, and stood up in one semi-fluid movement. “It must be insane!”Laying down and rolling aren’t the only tricks the Icelandic Horse has up its sleeve. It has also mastered the art of looking fabulous. With their vast array of colors, incredible manes, and sassy attitudes, Iceland’s horses were born ready for the runway. And they certainly don’t shy away from the camera. We had a blast taking these portraits of some of the island’s most photogenic residents.

Most of Iceland’s horses spend their time wild and free in the highlands, instead of on farms. Like sheep, they roam at their own whim, with neither supervision nor control, able to graze wherever they choose. But once a year, toward the end of summer, they’re brought down from the mountains.

Icelandic HorsesWe happened to be in Sauðárkrókúr during this year’s roundup, which sees a group of farmers recruit their friends, neighbors, and even some courageous tourists to hop into the saddle and gallop off into the vast highlands. Their mission: locate and herd every horse in the area to a corral set up outside town.

The Long Shadow of Mount Rainier

Here in Boulder we get magnificent sunsets, especially in the summer when the clouds interplay with the mountains to the west. But I have never seen anything like this, the shadow of Washington state’s Mt. Rainier cast along the clouds at sunrise.

That’s amazing. Mt. Rainier is a volcano, climbing to a height of over 14,411 feet or 4392 meters. There are no other mountains anywhere near that height nearby, so it’s really prominent in the landscape (by comparison, there are several fourteeners, as they’re called, in the Rockies, so they don’t stick out as much though they’re still breathtaking). The rising Sun catches the peak, and the shadow is cast on the underside of the cloud layer. The dramatic sunrise colors really make this an incredibly beautiful shot.

It is the most topographically prominent mountain in the contiguous United States and the Cascade Volcanic Arc. Mt. Rainier is considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world, and it is on the Decade Volcano list. Because of its large amount of glacial ice, Mt. Rainier could potentially produce massive lahars that would threaten the whole Puyallup River valley.

Day of Peace - one of the major international festivals, which is held under the auspices of the UN and calls upon all States to give up weapons of warfare. Every year on September 21 held a variety of peacekeeping activities, creative people, of course, do not stay away from them. This year, one of the large-scale project was «The Fallen» by British artists Andy Moss and Jamie Wardley. Nine thousand silhouettes on the beach of Arromanches in France - a reminder of the tragic D Day that initiated the D-Day landings in Normandy during World War II.

The project is a nine thousand silhouettes created in the sand by means of ordinary stencils. The task that faced the artists was so extensive that for the realization of the project to life required the assistance of volunteers. A way to "draw" is simple: just dug silhouette on a prepared form.

On a wing and a prayer: The extraordinary hanging monasteries that cling to the sides of cliffs

When you're trying to connect with your god, it helps to find some peace and quiet, if you can.
But that was, indeed, no such problem for the architects of these impossibly built monasteries.
Constructed at dizzying heights on the sides of mountains, they ensured only the most devoted - and vertigo-free - followers would join them for prayer.

Gripping: This gravity-defying hanging monastery clings to the side of Mt Huashan in China and is only accessible via steep and dangerous paths

Closer to their god: The Taktshang Tiger's Nest monastery clings to a cliff 2,300ft above the Paro Valley floor in Bhutan at such a height it looks down on the clouds

Between a rock and a hard place: The Holy Trinity is part of the Meteora - which translates as 'suspended in the air' - complex of monasteries in Greece, one of the largest collections of such buildings in the country
Many were only accessible by steep and secret paths in order to provide the most seclusion as they sought uninterrupted spiritual awakening.
By far the most precarious is a monastery that dangles seemingly in defiance of the laws of physics on the side of Mt Huashan in China.
Located around 75 miles east from Xi'an City of Shaanxi Province, Mt Huashan is known as 'The number one precipitous mountain under Heaven'. It is one of the five sacred mountains in China.
It is home to several influential Taoist temples where emperors of past dynasties made pilgrimages, making Mt Huashan the holy land of Taoism.

In Bhutan, the Taktshang Tiger's Nest monastery clings to a cliff 2,300ft above the Paro Valley floor.
According to legend, it takes its name from the 'second Buddha', Precious Guru Padmasambhava, who travelled to the site on a tiger.
Some visitors have reportedly fallen to their death on the way up after apparently losing their footing.
But the desire to build in such vertigo-inducing places isn't just confined to Asia. Turkey has its own, the monastery of Sumela, perched at an altitude of 3,900ft.

Easy does it: A visitor navigates the stone stairs leading up to the temple and fortress of Sigiriya, but this path is by no means the most perilous compared to those approaching other monasteries

As with most of these great buildings, they aren't the easiest to access. In Greece, the Roussanou Monastery could only be accessed by baskets lifted by pulleys, until roads, steps and bridges were contructed in the 1920s.
It is one of six active monasteries in the Meteora complex, one the largest and most important developments of its kind, only behind Mount Athos.
The monasteries are built on natural sandstone rock pinnacles near the Pinios.

Manhattan of the Desert Shibam — Yemen

The city of Shibam, located in the central-western area of Hadhramaut Governorate, in the Ramlat al-Sab`atayn desert, is best known for its towering mudbrick skyscrapers. This small town of 7000 is packed with around 500 mud houses standing between 5 and 11 stories tall and reaching 100 feet high, all constructed entirely of mud bricks. The bizarre skyline that the high rise buildings bestow upon the city has earned Shibam the moniker "Manhattan of the Desert."

Shibam is often called "the oldest skyscraper city in the world" and is one of the oldest and best examples of urban planning based on the principle of vertical construction. Its plan is trapezoidal, almost rectangular; and it is enclosed by earthen walls within which a block of dwellings, also built from earth, have been laid out on an orthogonal grid. Shibam was founded in the 3rd century AD, but most of the houses you see here dates only to the 16th century, following a devastating flood of which Shibam was the victim in 1532-33. However, some older houses and large buildings still remain from the first centuries of Islam, such as the Friday Mosque, built in 904, and the castle, built in 1220.

In general the windowless lower floors are used for grain storage, with areas for domestic use above and those for family and leisure above that. The main room on the second floor is used by men for socializing. It often has wonderful carved plasterwork and freestanding decorated wooden columns supporting the ceiling, while women's areas are found higher, usually on the third or fourth floor. The highest rooms are for communal use by the whole family, and on the upper levels there are often bridges and doors connecting the houses. These are a defensive feature, but also a practical one – especially for old people who find it difficult to walk up and down the interminable staircases.

The houses needed to be rebuilt over the centuries. Rain and erosion have been constant threats to the buildings here. To protect their homes, residents must thickly coat the facades and roofs with sealant, and ensure they are maintained and regularly renovated. Those who can afford it limewash their houses to protect them against termites. Shibam was added to UNESCO's World Heritage list in 1982.

The building officially opened on 4 January 2010.
