10 Greatest Heavyweights in Boxing History

2013-07-23T20:13:00.003-07:00

The heavyweight division in boxing has produced many elite and memorable fighters such as Mike Tyson, here we rank the top 10 heavyweights of our time:

10. Sonny Liston

Although the shot of him being knocked out by Ali will live long in the memory of boxing fans everywhere, Sonny Liston was one of the best heavyweight competitors of his time. He won the world heavyweight championship in 1962 when he knocked out Floyd Patterson.

9. Rocky Marciano
At 5'11 188 pounds, Marciano did not have the frame of a modern day heavyweight champion, he did however have stamina and conditioning that were unmatched by any other fighter that he faced off against.

8. Vitali Klitschko
At 6'7, 243 pounds, the current reigning WBC champion is a tough opponent for any fighter.

7. Larry Holmes
The only man to ever beat Muhammad Ali by technical knockout, albeit was at the very end of the legendary champion's career. Holmes was a great fighter who enjoyed a long career which blossomed after his victory over Ali.

6. Mike Tyson

It's a shame that this legendary fighter's prime was marred with legal troubles, an uncontrolled temperament and some late career losses. Few fighters have ever fought with as much tenacity and showcased as many spectacular knockouts as Mike Tyson in his early twenties. Tyson was the youngest fighter to ever win the heavyweight championship at the age of 20 when he beat Trevor Berbick in November of 1986.

5. Evander Holyfield

'Boxing's warrior spirit'- Evander Holyfield won over fans with his calm and focused demeanor. Holyfield was the first man in many years to put a stop to Mike Tyson in 1996 when he won the Heavyweight title.

4. Lennox Lewis

This British-Canadian citizen of Jamaican ancestry was able to secure the heavyweight title at a late age because of his cool and composed fighting style. At 6'5 250 pounds and a reach of 84 inches, Lewis is one of the best physical specimen boxing has ever seen. Lewis defeated many great fighters including Vitali Klitschko, Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield and was knocked out only once in his professional career.

3. Joe Frazier

The only man who ever defeated Muhammad Ali in his prime, Joe Frazier was a tenacious and powerful fighter with incredible conditioning. Muhammad Ali once said that Joe Frazier is right beside him as the greatest of all time in boxing.

2. George Foreman

Big and strong with great technique, Foreman was arguably the second best fighter from boxing's golden generation in the 70's beating Joe Frazier in two fights. His career lived on for very long and he was still a competitor in the early 90's, standing 12 rounds with Evander Holyfield in 1991.

1. Muhammad Ali

The greatest of all time, Muhammad Ali's overwhelming confidence combined with his endurance, impeccable technique and great physical qualities made him practically unbeatable in his prime. Ali was known to win psychological battles with his opponents before the fights and then tire his opponents out with his great defense, and footwork during the fights. Ali's heroic image and his involvement in social causes made him a fan favorite throughout boxing's golden generation.

Top 5 Anderson 'the Spider' Silva Knockouts

2012-10-06T18:46:00.000-07:00

Primary
If you follow MMA at all, you know Anderson Silva isn't to be messed with, whether he is in the ring or in the cage. His Brazilian Jiu Jitsu technique, mixed with his audacity and long boxer's reach have been flawless and unmatched in the middleweight division since 2006. Here are the most memorable career knockouts of the UFC's longest reigning middleweight champion:

5. Silva vs. Yushin Okami

Silva is most lethal when his opponent is on an all out attack mode. Here is a prime example, Silva is literally flat on his back and you wonder how he will get out of it..with a knockout! This one was disqualified for the kick off the ground...Albeit was very spectacular.

4. Silva vs. Carlos Newton

Newton came in with great confidence, not knowing the difficulty of the task at hand. Silva showed him at the end of it though. You never know how he will strike; it could be a knee, or it could be a hook.

3. Silva vs. Vitor Belfort

You let your guard down against Silva for a second, but he isn't within an arm's reach, what's the problem? you get a foot to the face! Belfort, the former heavyweight champion, never saw that one coming.

2. Silva vs. Tony Fryklund

Spectacular elbow, left Fryklund dazed and out of it. We've seen Silva win with punches, knees, elbows and face kicks, what's next?

1. Silva vs. Forrest Griffin

Silva is just playing with his opponent here, Forrest Griffin, one of the best fighters in the UFC. Anderson Silva is teasing him by giving him the chance at easy unguarded shots, and as soon as griffin responds, Silva goes for the knockout punch. Silva's quickness and unpredictability are what make this a legendary knockout.

Real Madrid beat Barcelona in Spanish Supercopa- Could this year be the end of Barca's dynasty?

2012-08-30T01:10:00.000-07:00

Primary
I didn't expect Barca to lose this game but I must admit that the new Barcelona team doesn't play with the confidence, composure and flair that was instilled by Pep Guardiola. Maybe it will take them time to gel as well again, but the way I see it, the days of Barca regularly beating opponents by 4+ goals are over. Opponents are discovering new defense tactics to close down barca's three wizards of small stature: Xavi, Ineista and Messi.

A great deal of Madrid's success in this game was due to the closing down of Leo Messi, who did score from a free kick, but he was not at his usual best where he finds tiny pockets of space and beats opponents at will. Jose Mourinho deployed Madrid's tactics to put 3 to 4 defenders quickly in front of Messi and close him down, which worked..well kind of. He only scored from a free kick this time, and it was a quiet game by his legendary standards.

Real Madrid really fought for this game and did not want to lose it in their home turf the historic Santiago Bernabeu. And the day ended with Real lifting the super cup in front of their home crowd to follow up on last season's La Liga title. This could be the start of a successful campaign for Mourinho's team, Cristiano Ronaldo, Gonzalo Higuian and Mezut Ozil are playing as well as ever, and that can only mean danger for other team's defenses. A positive to take for Barca was the short cameo of former arsenal midfielder Alex Song, who came on and produced some good passes but was unable to really help shift the game Barca's way. Luka Modric came on for Real Madrid to find a trophy at his disposal within his first few minutes on the pitch with the Spanish side.

Cristiano Ronaldo is finally enjoying a victory against Leo Messi and Barcelona.

Spanish Supercopa Second Leg Preview

2012-08-27T22:43:00.000-07:00

Primary
Barcelona and Real Madrid are on course for their second leg Supercopa clash on Wednesday. This will probably decide who stamps their dominance on Spanish Domestic competition and perhaps European competition this season. Tito Villanova's side (Barcelona) come off a narrow win in La Liga where their manager was sent off for fuming at the refs. Real Madrid had an even tougher time as they lost 2-1 to Getafe.

I predict a narrow victory for Barcelona as the proud 'Galacticos' team will chase a comeback win on their home turf, leaving plenty of space on the final third for Xavi, Ineista and Messi to work their Tiki Taka magic. Let's see what really happens but I predict some flashy moments from Cristiano and some incisive play by Lionel with Barcelona coming out with a 3-1 victory.

Cristiano Ronaldo vs. Leo Messi, a rivalry that has been emphasized by the media and been at the heart of world football in the past few years.

Here are Highlights of the intense first leg match between the two Spanish giants:

La Liga: Barcelona move 5 points clear of Real Madrid

2012-08-27T07:47:00.000-07:00

Two goals from Lionel Messi against Osasuna and a Real Madrid loss to Getafe has put the catalonians 5 points on top of La Liga on Sunday. The world's best player showed another display of master class as he scored a brace in the last 15 minutes of the game to make sure the European giants Barcelona are on course back to their winning ways.

Messi stole the headlines again in La liga.

Abdelazziz Barrada scored a winner in the second half for Getafe against a lackluster Real Madrid side. Real Madrid now only have a single point to show for their first two games of the season, and they've also lost the first leg of the Supercup to Barcelona, so they have some catching up to do if they want to emulate their success from last season.

Barcelona is on top of the La Liga table on goal difference even though they are tied on points with Rayo Vallecano, though I doubt that will last long.

Sunday EPL roundup

2012-08-26T18:57:00.000-07:00

Primary
Liverpool improved on their results from last week and the end of last season as the came within 10 minutes of a win over Manchester City. A late mistake from Martin Skrtel allowed Carlos Tevez to equalize for Manchester City after liverpool had taken the lead from Martin Skrtel and Luis Saurez. Raheem Sterling showed that he can compete with the best in the premier league as he created danger for Liverpool from the right wing. The youngster maybe a decisive addition to Brendan Rodgers squad this season.

The other Sunday match was less frantic and exciting than this one as arsenal again were unable to get on the score sheet against mid-lower table opposition in a scoreless tie. This time arsenal faced one of the teams they haven't been able to undo in the past: the physical resilient Stoke City.

Can Usain Bolt make it as a professional footballer?

2012-08-22T15:30:00.001-07:00

Primary
It would be great to see such a transition (It would be like a fairytale) to see the 100m dash world and olympic record breaker take his talents to the football pitch. Imagine the 6'5 bolt thundering his way through the field, storming past other players. It may seem like a long shot right now, But imagine if he learns the basics of the game well: controlling the ball, reading the plays to make the right runs, and shooting powerfully (something he probably already has in abundance considering the power of his legs) and accurately(what he needs to work on.)

Usain Bolt joking with Wayne Rooney and maybe helping him with his sprinting technique. Perhaps the latter can help Bolt with his striking abilities.

It would be a joy watching the world's fastest man and such a great athlete compete against the world's best footballers. Recent reports say that Usain bolt is in talks with Alex Ferguson for a trial with Manchester United.

Maybe going from a sprinter to a striker/winger for Manchester United is a bit of a leap, so let's hope he plays for Fulham or some other mid table premier league team and shows his way up to the top slowly. I might be too optimistic about this but he might redefine how the game of football is played and perceived if he learns how to use his attributes correctly.

Here is a video of Bolt fooling around with a football(soccer ball):
