Riveted by the Gospel

Kirk has been discipling several young men. Spencer was recently called as the pastor of the town church and has done a fair job. Because of his good leadership in a student ministry last year, he was invited to speak at a local Christian high school. While introducing himself, Spencer mentioned in passing that he was now a pastor at Kigezi Baptist and then went on with his talk. The students were riveted by the gospel and 13 of them accepted Christ as their Savior as he finished.

Upcoming Presidential Election

Please pray as we look to another evangelism campaign in October, continued work in leadership training and discipleship with small groups of young adults, and a growing short- and mid-term program. Political unrest and protests continue to be a regular part of life for the people of Bolivia, and they are living in a prolonged state of uncertainty about the future. Mission Trip in Belgium

The missions department at our home church in Atlanta asked Benjamin to join their group of short-term missionaries in Belgium for a mission trip. The team will be distributing literature in an area where a church is being planted. They will join a missionary family who is already working in Belgium. Benjamin will help translate for the group as they do not all speak French.

Seeking a Director

Murree Christian School (MCS) is in desperate need of a director. The present director, who has already extended his time, is willing to start the fall semester but there is no one to take his place when he leaves. Please pray for this urgent need. Praise God, for the first time in a number of years, there are teachers for most of the subjects. MCS is vital to many who could not stay in Pakistan if it were not open.

Pakistani Refugees

The Pakistan government has launched an offensive against the Taliban in the northern area of the country. This has displaced more than 3 million people. Pray for these refugees who are in need of basic food and shelter. Pray that a coalition of “likeminded” groups, including the church in Pakistan, would take this opportunity to share the love of God.

King's Kids

With the fall of Communism in Central and Eastern Europe much of the world rejoiced. However, no one anticipated some of the effects this would have on the next generation.

In the last 10 years, Poland has seen a shifting economy which has placed many men out of work. With no job and a way to provide for their family, many of the men will turn to alcohol to cover their shame. Unfortunately, this leads to abuse inside the home and leaves many children without a safe place to grow up. Families are frequently split across Europe in search of stable income.

Polish youth are left to their own devices, which are frequently violent and disrespectful. King’s Kids works in neighborhoods where the youth are living this reality. They provide the safe place that these kids need. Through tutoring, Bible studies, English and dance classes, the youth can discover who God has created them to be. I am eagerly awaiting joining this growing ministry in Poland!

Needing House Parents

Pray for the Lord to raise up more house parents for service in ministry to orphan teens. Our friends have served five years in this capacity and will see their 14 teens graduate this month.

The kids at the ‘source’ orphanage all ask if they can come to live with this couple when they graduate at age 15. They hope to spend the next two years of their lives becoming more prepared to live independently. Most of the kids in this couple's care become Christians.

Dedicating a Church

A van full of people from my church went to Rio Grande to dedicate the church building and officially install the pastor. The building isn't completely finished as the walls need to be plastered and painted and a few more cement blocks need to be purchased to finish the windows.

The place where the church was meeting was way too small for the amount of people attending. Now they have more than plenty of space to meet in to worship the Lord.

We praise the Lord for what He has done to make this place of worship possible. Please continue to pray for the group of Christians in Rio Grande, that they might now be more eager than ever to invite their non-Christian friends and family members to attend the services. Also continue to pray that we might have the needed finances to finish what still needs to be done.

Women's Ministry

Pray for our Women’s Ministry Team as we plan a Celebrate Family. This is a one-day seminar for July. The goal is to encourage families to put Christ central in their home and bridge some of the cross-generational gaps. The youth, singles, men and women will all be included in the planning and participation. It’s a big undertaking as we are targeting 600 people.

Celebration

I heard a voice calling my name. I looked for the source of the voice and it was a young college-age man. I had previously prayed with him to receive Christ and now by God’s divine appointment I was able to see him again. He showed me the books I had given him, carrying them in his backpack. He said that he is off on Tuesday and will join me for church in Times Square. Afterwards, I was able to pray with another man from Mexico to receive Christ. Praise God for these two new believers. Pray for them to grow in their faith.

Flooding Destroys Homes

Northeast Brazil has been hit by the worst rains and floods in 10 years. Teresina and the neighboring state of Maranhão are feeling the full impact of the rains. In the northeast there are over 10,000 families that have had to leave their homes or have lost their homes. Pray that the Brazilian church will reach out to meet the physical needs of these people.

DVD Night

In our last university DVD night, we had a great discussion with the students who were there. We watched the film, Expelled, and had a great discussion on truth and accountability and were able to relate it back to the gospel. In fact, it was some of the other students who pointed out the connection and made the point. It was great, and there were many unbelievers there. Please pray for our upcoming DVD nights.

Women Mentoring Women

The women's ministry team of the Biblical Leadership Training Center finished teaching the course "Women Mentoring Women." We had participants from five local churches and women received practical training and experience on how and why to begin women's ministries in their churches. We had approximately 20 participants, five of whom completed all the required reading and homework assignments and received certificates.

The first half of the course was taught in the fall and led to the offering of an evangelistic Bible study just for women at the Open Door Bible Church. A leadership team of women co-hosted and taught the study "Jesus Cares for Women" for seven weeks.

New women came who are not yet believers and lay women in the church gained more experience in teaching and leading small group discussions. So many were encouraged as they reflected on the radical acceptance and love Jesus offered to widows, prostitutes, the sick, and the outcast women around him.

Property Purchased

Dan was able to finalize the purchase of the Finnish Lutheran Mission’s property at Ngaparou. They owned property adjoining ours at our beachfront campsite and were seeking to sell it. This is the successful culmination of a three-year process of negotiating with them so that this land could continue to be used for ministry purposes for the growing Christian community here in Senegal.

Praise the Lord that we were able to secure it, and at an affordable price, far below market value. Now please pray for adequate funds to develop the camp so that it can be even more useful as a tool for harvesting spiritual fruit in this land.

40 Days of Community

Our church just completed Rick Warren’s “40 Days of Community” study. I was amazed at how involved everyone was and how serious everyone took this study. About 90 percent of the congregation joined small group Bible studies to discuss the book and many participated in the daily devotional and Scripture memorization.

Attendance seemed to be at an all-time high during the study, and the number of visitors also increased dramatically! During the 40 days, our pastor gave a sermon on a speci?c topic and our small groups discussed it in more depth during the week.

Our small group Bible study met weekly, and Benjamin and another man took turns facilitating. As part of the study, each group was required to create a service project for the community. The church saw several people come to know the Lord through this study. We give all the praise to the Lord!

Ministering to the Elderly

The Global Missions Ministry of Windsor Village United Methodist Church from Houston, Texas, visited Nkwanta for their fifth time since we have been on the field. We held free clinics in three villages catering to the elderly. The team ministered to 160 elderly patients (one of whom was 122 years old!) with free medical care.

Although we did not have any new decisions for Christ we were able to positively impact many lives with life saving information about their health and lifestyle. The elderly are a neglected group when it comes to evangelism because they are hard to reach due to their devotion to the religion of their ancestors. Pray for the spiritual health of the elderly in Ghana—because they have great influence on the society and the culture.

Stiff Resistance Overcome

Promifé week gave us another opportunity to watch how God's goals and timing come together with flawless precision. We were working alongside four local churches for this event. During the first two days we were met with stiff resistance from various sorts in our efforts to evangelize. Our leadership team met with the pastors of all four churches to pray and discuss the issues. Through the course of that meeting we discovered that the root problem was one of division and disharmony between ALL of the evangelical churches in town, including among the very four pastors present.

Through prayer the hearts of each of the four men were softened and a bond of unity was restored. The rest of the week transpired with success and the final victory rally saw all four churches present! The pastors continue to work together! Pray that other churches will come alongside as well.

A Van in Need

Our van has broken down, and we are unable to fix it. The van is a critical part of our weekly ministry activities. We use it to travel to different areas to hold ministry activities.

This van has helped us reach several hundred children and their families in the slums. We have had the privilege of sharing the gospel with these children and have seen many make decisions for Christ!

Please pray that God would provide the $20,000-$30,000 U.S. dollars we need to replace it.

International Partnership

The international partnership of Calvary Baptist Church in Brewer, Maine, and the Eglise Evangelique Baptiste de Thies (EEBT) is a five-to-eight year multi-faceted approach to evangelizing the village of Ngollar. Over the next several years, the Brewer church will send several teams to work under the direction of the evangelism team of EEBT in reaching people for Christ.

Please pray for these teams as they reach out to those in the village with God's love and that many would come to Christ. Also please pray for the expansion of this program to include more American churches to reach more villages in Senegal.

Great Wall Ministries

We spent 12 days in East Asia holding seminars, attending outreach meetings, and meeting with students. At least two made decisions for Christ and many others seemed to move closer to belief in Jesus.

Providing Hope

Hope Alive! is feeling the pinch of the financial downturn. While most sponsors have continued with their commitment gifts, monies given to the general fund have dropped. Several of our programs are run solely from donations to the general fund.

One of the programs feeds 50 students from child-headed households. The students aren’t the only ones threatened with loss. The cooks and those who serve the students depend on their salaries to provide for their families. We praise God for Manteca Morning Rotary Club and The Pro Amigos from Manteca and Livermore, California. Each group has contributed toward a poultry project at our Gulu site. A poultry house and yard, plus a small storage building, will be built in the open area to the right of the small structure in the picture.

We’re trusting God for the additional money to finish off the buildings and buy the first set of chicks. Our goal is to generate enough income through the sale of broilers to cover the cost of the Feeding Centre.

Light of the Gospel Church

Volcano threatening to erupt in DR Congo

Our burden for the Street Children

An area of ministry that remains a burden on our hearts is regarding the talibe boys. They are street children who lack life's necessities. Faithful followers

A group of high school students meet weekly, led by a missionary couple who are working with these students evangelistically. Two of the girls have come to Christ. Reaching out in a physical way

Slow paced life...

Recently we met with young students, mission colleagues and a few Brazilian pastors, to teach Bible College classes. These students minister in towns that are slow paced, where the Internet is still a novelty and the average adult salary is close to minimum wage.

Please pray for direction for these students on how to do church ministry in these communities that are numerically declining and often decaying. Pray that God would continue to give them strength for their commitments and continued spirits of contentment.

Dedication of new chapel

Uprooted

Relocating the poor people outside the city limits of Kigali continues. A number of our friends and church members have already moved. It is a huge challenge for them to uproot their families and then move to brand-new areas and try to buy homes, or build homes, with the funds they have received for their Kigali property. CBT Program

Our CBT program (Istituto Biblico Cristiano) is getting ready to launch a more intensive program at Il Faro church in Naples. Bibles Sold Out at Convention!

Before a standing-room only crowd of more than 3,500 people, in the largest convention center in South America, several of the most respected leaders in Brazil presented the Almeida 21st Century text as the most accurate, modern, and easiest to read Bible text available. This Bible was presented before the Brazilian Baptist Convention at their annual meeting. The 1,000 copies we had available for sale were sold out even with sales limited to one per person. Praise God!

US Team Ministered at Grace Place

We praise the Lord for the team from the U.S. that ministered at the Grace Place in Chiayi, Taiwan, in February. Over their week of service, they ministered to about 50 kids who were off from school for the Lunar New Year vacation. Working with Orphans

Just over a year ago, we arrived in Russia with the dream of reaching orphans and street children with material help and the hope of Jesus Christ. Since then, with the help of a local church, a ministry foundation has been established to reach the needy kids in a Krasnodar neighborhood. Please pray for continued guidance and wisdom in that ministry.

We have also made concrete plans with the leadership of our church to begin working in a local orphanage. In the last year, orphanages here have closed down entirely to foreigners. Please pray that opportunities will arise for us to work in this local orphanage.

Church Partnership Evangelism

Please pray for our Church Partnership Evangelism (CPE) campaign that has had great success. We have linked a local church in our area with an American missionary/church who shares their testimony of faith and the gospel. Urgent: School Might Close!

Struggling Mom Hears Warm Words

A friend of ours was recently sharing some frustrations she's had with her teenage son and her concern for him. Sheryl shared with her how adolescents relate differently with their moms during this period of life and the changes that moms go through as they learn to parent these developing adults. Continued Opportunities to Teach

Pray for continued opportunities for Rosa to teach in a pastoral counseling class. She found that the students have a deep need. Most Asians avoid counseling as it is a sign of weakness or shame. This is a major way of reaching even the people most hardened to the gospel. Frank is leading a small mentoring group of eight men. Pray that he can find the ministry issues that each one needs to deal with to make them more effective for ministry.

Devoted Follows of Christ

The vision God has given us is to raise up devoted Christ-followers who will build the church in Taiwan. Many people in Taiwan simply claim Jesus as one more among the many other gods they worship—hence the emphasis on devoted. The Taiwanese will pay homage to every known god so as not to offend any. English by 2010

The Rwandan government has made the decision to change the official secondary language of the country from French to English by 2010. According to a report, schools will have one year to make the switch. In response to this change, Barbara has been inundated with requests for English classes and tutoring. Please pray for wisdom to know how to best focus her efforts. If the children do not learn English now, they will have little hope for a good education in the future.

Sharing with Hospital Patients

Street Children Project

Mike and Ghed will be working to plant churches in strategic cities as defined by field leadership, promote alternative economic programs to alleviate poverty in the spirit of Christ, and assist in developing a ministry center geared towards training ministers in church planting and promoting international missions. Please pray with us as we try and work out the details of our departure and that God would be preparing the hearts of those we would minister to.

New Members Join Poland Team

Prayer and Praise

Recently the churches we work with in Cochabamba all came together to sing and pray together for a week. All together we had over 400 show up! The next eight days were spent going from house to house, visiting friends, neighbors and family members, and sharing the Good News of salvation by faith in Jesus. "Jesus is our Super Hero"

Restoration Ministries sponsored a wonderful children’s party recently. The theme was "Jesus is our Super Hero." We had 530 children participate in the party! It was a lot fun and a blessed time. We started with songs and some games, and then we had the gospel message given in a skit. They were touched by God. When I hugged one gentleman that was crying he said, “It is so good to see that God loves me and how He is so good.” This gentleman spends the day working part time, but returns to spend the night at jail. All the glory goes to God!

55 Teeth Extracted!

Praise God! A team of doctors from the States came to show God's love to the village of Tenkelen, as well as surrounding villages. About 300 sick people were seen and 55 teeth extracted in two days time. Each patient was prayed for as they were seen. Pray for spiritual fruit as we spend time weekly doing Bible storying and health teaching in the village of Tenkelen.

Teaching About Jesus through French Grammar

Ernie is taking part in a special Bible study with a pastor. They are studying about heaven and both of them are enjoying it. Two of their students, home for the summer and waiting for school to start, are working on this as well. One of them is scanning the English material and the other runs the English through an automatic translating program. Then he goes over it very carefully to make sure the French is correct, and that the program used the correct French word. This means he must read well and understand it. This young man still holds to his other faith, even though he has heard the gospel many times. Pray that his eyes would be open to Jesus.

Eight People Baptized This Year!

Pray for an end to the conflicts taking place near our home where seven people were killed—six of them Africans. Pray for some African church families who attend our church. Eight people were baptized this year and attendance is stable at about 150—even though some military families transferred out. Continue to pray for enough peace to allow us to minister freely in the area and for enough unrest to cause people to think about their eternal destiny.

Training Ten New Teachers

Ten people have been taking part in our "How To Lead a Bible Study" seminar. Each are busy with job and family responsibilities, but all of them took the time to do quality work in preparation of their passages to study. Three men will be taking the preaching course that Paul will be offering in January. Please pray that they are ready for the challenge and work expected of them. When they finish the course their church will have six laymen who have been trained to preach and will be part of the preaching rotation.

Forgiveness Freely Given

Recently we spent a week ministering at a conference in Holland. After our marriage seminar, one man came up to Tim and shared with him that he had been deeply convicted about an area of sin in his life. This man shared that he went to his pastor and confessed and asked him to be his accountability partner. He also confessed to his wife and you could see the joy in his eyes as he experienced forgiveness and new hope. What a blessing.

Bible Story Murals

I have been asked to head up a team of students to paint a group of murals and mini-murals illustrating Bible stories for boys at an at-risk relief center. This is a very effective method for Africa as storytelling is deeply ingrained in the culture. We have the awesome privilege of illustrating these stories! Following this project we will be doing more murals for another nearby center.

Deaf Bible Translation Progress

Please pray that more people from the deaf community here will come to Christ, and that the men in the deaf ministry will take on leadership roles. The church-based training course on leadership is currently being taught to this end. In addition, translation of the Bible into a sign language version proves to be a difficult task. Wycliffe Bible Translators in England will be sponsoring a consultation in Feburary 2009 for those working on sign language translations. Three of the men from the deaf ministry want to attend. Please pray that they will be able to do so and progress with the translation will continue rapidly.

Rapid Growth with Seminary

Randy's dream of starting a new seminary in Nepal with his former student and close friend was realized in May when he traveled to Katmandu to teach the first class of 15 students. It was thrilling to see the rapid growth of the new church there and the rise of new leaders. We love being a part of it all and feel a strong sense of calling to make Nepal our primary objective for redeployment until God either opens or closes that door. There are so many exciting opportunities in South Asia!

The Harvest Remains Plentiful

For over a year, the WorldVenture team here had the privilege of enjoying the presence of three mid-termers who came to work in a child sponsorship program. Their energy invigorated us and their laughter brought us joy. I, personally, was touched by their loving spirits and they did so much to help the youth of this country. Their time of service was completed in July, and they have returned to the U.S. in order to follow God's continued leading in their lives. Nonetheless, the harvest remains plentiful. Please join me in praying that the Lord of the Harvest would lead other faithful workers into the challenging fields of this and neighboring countries.

NLEC Ministry Center

We are building the Nkwanta Leadership Equipping Center (NLEC) in order to better facilitate our ministry to these leaders—and to give them something that they can own and carry on in the future as their churches and their leadership base grows. The NLEC is not about a building, but about a program that can be implemented long after we are gone to assure that God's church in the Nkwanta District grows and develops to full maturity. Soccer Balls Share the Gospel Story

Recently, a church vacation Bible school program sent us a box of soccer balls. We have had the joy of giving them away to schools and kids. As part of a program called "Operation Kid to Kid," the balls have colored hexagons on them that are used to explain the gospel story. It's exciting to see how this project has made it possible for us to go into schools and share the gospel in ways we may not have otherwise had the opportunity to do. Please pray with us that these balls will be a constant voice of God's saving grace and love in their lives.

Family Looses 18-year-old Daughter

In a rural village, the only believing family lost their 18-year-old daughter after a short illness. Pray that her parents would experience the comfort that can only come from their Heavenly Father. Pray for six of her seven siblings who are not yet believers. May they come to know the Savior.

Mayatima Relieft Project

Recently we traveled to Kenya to work with the Mayatima Relief Project. During the elections last December the farm project was affected. All the chickens had to be sold and now they have to take a step backwards and buy new ones. The churches were also affected and out of the 11, only five remain because of the tribal classes. Pray for the five remaining churches that they will be able to grow.

Salvation Comes Through Gardening

A couple weeks ago, Esther had a very significant spiritual conversation with the man we’ve hired to do some gardening for us a couple days a month. He was very concerned for his family out in the village, because he had left them with no food and he himself had very little work. We gave him some basic supplies in the name of Jesus, and also helped “drum up” some more gardening work for him with other missionaries in town. He saw immediate answers to Esther’s prayers for him in Jesus’ name! He also acknowledged that salvation comes through Jesus and that the Bible is God’s Word. We don’t know if he is truly saved, so pray for him that he and his family will know the Savior. We hope to give him oral Scriptures on MegaVoice (a solar powered MP3-type player), as he probably does not read well and his family almost certainly does not.

HopeAlive! Sponsorships

One of my older Hope Alive! students recently brought my attention to a family in dire straits. "They have no food," my student told me. "They haven't eaten for several days. They've been chased from school. They are hopeless. They don't know what to do." I was able to come up with funds to pay school fees so all three children could finish the term. Hope Alive! will most likely enroll the younger brother and perhaps the cousin. The eldest, unfortunately, is too far along in school to meet enrollment criteria, but I pray I can come up with funds for his remaining term this year and for next school year.

Please pray for Hope Church in Donetsk, Ukraine, as they prayerfully consider calling a Ukrainian pastor to serve. Only God Can Make Things Grow!

We have been involved in a ministry of visiting and encouraging our students in their ministries. This involves all kinds of church situations, but it is one of the most stimulating things we do. Recently we visited one of our graduates who, along with her husband, began a ministry about three years ago for the poor children of their neighborhood. It has grown dramatically (attendance doubled in the last year!) and they expressed that our visit was like fresh air for them, to know that someone cares and can give some new insights. They really are touching lives that have had NO influence from the gospel. We came away more encouraged than they were to see how God is using them!

Project: New Life

Projecto: Vida Nova (Project: New Life) is an outreach ministry of our church. It began with a Christmas distribution of food in 2006 and has evolved to include visitation, social advocacy, painting and home, pulling teeth (by a dentist!), food and clothing distribution and children’s activities. Last April we embarked on tutoring “at risk” children living in a small government housing area located about three blocks away. Please pray as we’d like to offer more one-on-one tutoring, twice a week, but we need more volunteers. Also, please pray for the P:VN leadership as we plan and train for a new, wider reaching children’s program as well as an adult education program this fall.

Staff Follow-up After Camp

Follow-up is being done after the Bible Correspondence Institute Camp in July. Those who attended now want another training time at Christmas. The staff is also considering how to hold a separate training time for those who have made a commitment, especially on how those students can begin sharing with friends and families.

Exciting Church Growth!

We've seen some exciting growth in the church! After beginning August with many of our regulars on holiday (we were around 20 the first Sunday of August), we've been pushing and exceeding 40! One week we had around 46. Of course that makes even more urgent the prayer request for a bigger space to meet. We've also seen several of our children make decisions for Christ. We'll be baptizing four this first Sunday of September, three children and one Irish lady who is a recent convert. We are all very excited. Also, we are expecting to add to the church's covenant membership several families and individuals. So, it sure seems that God is working. Please pray that this would only be the beginning.

A New Life Overseas!

It's so crazy to think that we are actually here, living in Lebanon! Yesterday we moved into a furnished apartment above the church building. We are renting one of the rooms and in the other rooms are two girls from Europe who are here doing research for school. They are both very nice. They'll be here through the end of November. We have the option of staying here with them until then and then renting the whole apartment, or looking for another place nearby. Lots of pros and cons we are trying to weigh...we'd appreciate your prayers as we make the decision—we need to know one way or the other in the next couple of weeks.

We have been invited to speak at the Arab4Jesus Conference in Bethlehem. We are thrilled that the conference will take place again in Bethlehem, as there are many precious believers there who cannot leave this area and are so hungry for the Lord. Transitioning Smoothly

We are settled in Colorado Springs, which will be our home base for the next year or so while on home assignment. Strength through Encouragement

In late June, Cynthia passed her final exam as a caregiver. The whole process of taking classes, filling out papers and finally working has been a stretching time for her. School Opportunities

As you know, we've been asking for prayer about where our girls, Abby and Mary, would go to school this year, specifically about whether Abby could get into Ukrainian school and whether or not we should even consider that for Mary. After waiting many weeks to talk to the director the school, he decided in less than five minutes, ‘We’ll take them both.’ Please keep praying for them, especially for Mary, who is very uncertain about all of this. Young Lady Accepts Christ

Pray for a young lady who auditioned for 180 Degrees (Ramona’s ministry) from a Catholic background. She didn’t pass the auditions, but during her one-on-one interview, she received Christ as her personal Savior. Ramona is trying to link her up with a local church youth group.

Accepted As New Board Members

Following Jesus

Three men in the village of Tenkelen are deeply interested in following Jesus. A national believing co-worker, who lives in a village 10 kilometers away, visited them weekly during the planting season of July and August. Pray that he was able to teach them to read Scripture for themselves. One of these men said he is praying everyday that God will reveal to him if Jesus is the truth. Pray that all will become believers.

Sunday School Success!

Last month I began teaching the pastoral students at Mission pour la Nouvelle Creature. I was nervous about accepting such a responsibility because I have only had one and a half years of language study. This course, which was focused on the various teaching ministries within the church, emphasized the importance of children's youth programs in the church and community. Please continue to pray that local pastors and church leaders get on board first! It was exciting to see so many pastors eager to start or strengthen their Sunday school classes.

Rio Grande Church Plant

Recently my pastor began a campaign to encourage each member to give as many tiles as possible so a roof could be finally built for our church plant in Rio Grande. Students at Baptist Seminary still healing.

In June we asked you to pray for our students at the Baptist Seminary, who had been deeply affected by the sudden death of one of their fellow students. God has done a healing work in their hearts to bring them to a point of accepting this, but that event definitely affected their level of enthusiasm. Most of the young students who are single have realized that life is short and have begun to focus more on what is really important. They are taking their studies and ministries more seriously. Please continue to pray for these young students.

Purchase of Land

Developing Relationships

A big ministry opportunity happened for us when Janice and the girls went to the southern part of Romania for a language camp. It was a big success! Besides teaching English and some Bible stories, one purpose was to help a young doctor there with her efforts to reach the village for Christ. The English class resulted in many more contacts for her, and increased the good will and acceptance for her in that village. All together, there were about 70 kids who attended. Please continue to pray that this young doctor will continue to have an impact on these children.

Business as Mission

Our church was able to start a "house church" this last January in a very poor squatter community in our city of Mandaue. Sixteen families recently were able to avail of small loans from our New Life Micro Enterprise ministry for starting small businesses. Pray that their businesses would thrive and they would be faithful in the repayment of the loans. Pray for wisdom as we seek to help them install a community bathroom also.

Gary and Karen Shogren anticipate joining the WorldVenture team as they continue serving in Costa Rica. Since 1998, the Shogrens have ministered in San José, the capital of Costa Rica. Gary has served as professor of New Testament and as Academic Dean at the Evangelical Seminary for Pastoral Studies (ESEPA). In 2005, Gary became President of the university. Karen will continue working with new missionary families, teaching them how to adjust with the challenges of moving away from loved ones and adapting to a new culture. Committed Partnership

Classmate Needs Prayer

Some of you may remember us sharing with you about a classmate of our son Max, who came for the very first time this winter to our ski camp. You may also remember that he got very sick right before and almost didn't come. This young boy had an incredible experience at camp and in the end did not want to go home. He lives with his mom who is an atheist and his dad who is a nominal Catholic. He is open to hearing about the Lord, so please pray that his heart will be touched by the love of God and this his life will be transformed.

Chinese Immigrant Outreach

Recently Tony has met with local pastors in Flushing, New York, to discuss the plight of recent Chinese immigrants. These immigrants, some documented some undocumented, seem to be an unreached population since they lead unstable lives. First Baptist Church of Flushing has started an English/Mandarin service early on Sunday mornings to accommodate these immigrants and it has grown from 20 to 90 attendants very quickly. Please pray with us that God would open doors, move hearts, and use us to mobilize, participate and encourage this mission field.

Wood Shop Success

Mark has recently set up a wood shop, as he has been made aware of a need at some local orphanages. We hope to be able to donate beds and cribs to these establishments. By donating these items, along with things such as children's books and clothing, we hope to create goodwill and the opportunity for evangelism. There is a lot of potential here. Please pray with us for this opportunity to share the gospel with others.

Nyarafolo Translation Project

Linn and her Nyarafolo Translation project team have been racing toward the goal of providing more Scripture portions. In May, the draft of Genesis was verified and in June, Galatians was as well. It has been exhausting at times, but God has helped us through. Please continue to pray for ongoing funding for the Nyarafolo project and that there would be a paralleled push for higher literacy with this project.

34 Evangelical Christians Arrested

Police arrested 34 evangelical Christians who were meeting in a private home for prayer and fellowship. All 24 men and 10 women present in the meeting were taken to prison with their children left behind. Pray for the release of these Christians who are imprisoned for the sake of Christ. Ask God to strengthen and comfort their families, especially the children.

Kids Club Expands!

There are several things on the horizon (both near and far) that we would appreciate prayer for. First, there are several in the church that would like to meet for discipleship. Please pray that God would use us to build into them so that they might grow in their faith. And second, our kid's club is growing and some of the kids are moving out of the age range that we planned (6-11). We are now hoping to split the kid's club into two clubs; one for ages 6-11 and another for 12 and over. We have the leaders for these two divisions, but we need regular helpers and venues.

Short-term Team Aid in Church Building

Pray for a short-term team that will be coming to help build a church in the first week of September. Some of the preparations will be more difficult to make as I do not live in the area where the team will be working. Pray that God will provide opportunities for the team to minister to Brazilians above and beyond the construction of the temple.

Recently we received visits from two families considering long-term service with us in Buenos Aires. We have been praying for these families specifically for some time. After visiting, these families both told us they are moving forward in joining us here! Need Vacancies Filled for English Camps

One of the things that has surprised us the most since we started coordinating short and mid-term missions is how often we find ourselves short of personnel to fill opportunities. This summer, there are still vacancies with the English camps we work with as well as needs at the MK schools here. Please pray that God would raise up people to fill these ministry needs.

The Church in Tordas

In May, two ladies were baptized at the church in Tordas. Sadly, many like these women grow up in churches without ever hearing a clear explanation of the Gospel. In fact, in many churches the Gospel has been lost. Please continue to pray for the church in Tordas and others, that the Gospel may be clearly preached.

Philip's House

Philip's House has been a project we have been working on for several years. We have been planning, investing time, funds and hard work to be able to help orphans and abandoned children. As of today, Philip's House has taken care of 18 children who have been either abandoned or orphaned. Please continue to pray for these children as they are loved and cared for and the continued funds for this project.

Young Women Transformed by Christ Seeks to Work in Orphanage

We have told many of you about a young women who when accepting Christ 10 years ago, received much resistance from her parents. They were so against her attending church that one Sunday they physically removed her and forbid her from going again. Over time, her parents saw a gentle spirit produced by a life transformed by Christ. She has served several years now at a camp and children's home, and just recently shared with us that she felt God leading her to work at an orphanage. Please continue to pray for this young women as she faithfully serves God with her whole life!

Developing Partnerships

We have committed to working at the Shalom home for boys, Sauces home for kids and at the "comedor" in Isla Trinitaria twice a week each for the next month. The goal is to pursue the possibility of further partnership with these organizations. WorldVenture International Day of Prayer

Join the WorldVenture international community in praising God and praying for those who have committed themselves to serving Him cross-culturally and those who help them on their Great Commission journey.

We are thankful to God for the 107 people who have been endorsed through the end of August for short- and mid-term service or appointed for career ministry in 2007.

Pray for Those Serving with WorldVenture

Pray for the short- and mid-term missionaries who are currently applying to serve with WorldVenture.
October 1-5: Short-/mid-term missionaries and coordinators will attend training held at WorldVenture headquaters in Littleton, Colorado. Pray for them as they equip themselves for serving God overseas.
October 27-November 8: Long-term candidates will interview with the Career Interview Committee. Pray for the committee to have wisdom and discernment as they seek God’s will for the candidates.
Pray for the appointees as they begin to prepare for their ministry overseas through WorldVenture.
Pray for those who have committed to be mentors for the appointees. These mentors are representatives from the appointees’ home churches. The mentors will receive training to help support, encourage and guide the appointees as they begin support discovery.

Pray for Recruitment Department

Pray for the Mission Coaches from WorldVenture’s Recruitment Department as they travel to various colleges, seminaries and conferences.
Pray for contacts with students and people interested in serving cross-culturally.
Pray for wisdom as the coaches develop relationships and guide those who sense God’s call to serving him in overseas ministry.
Pray for the details involved with MissionVentures 2008. MissionVentures are short-term team mission experiences that provide team members a feel for what missionaries face in day-to-day life and how God can use each of them on the mission field.

Puppet Ministry

I began a puppet team with some youth here in Kampala through a program called Children of Hope. The kids who are part of the program have sponsors in the United States who pay for their school fees. The kids are in 1st through 12th grade. It's been fun to begin working with some of the older kids, teaching them how to tell Bible stories with puppets. Please pray for the kids who are on the puppet team. It's been hard for us to meet regularly, so please pray that they can come to all the practices.

Praise God for Successful Billy Graham Event

The Billy Graham Evangelistic Association came to Ukraine during the first week of July after years of preparation. Franklin Graham preached to a full stadium in Kiev and to thousands by satellite translation that took place throughout the country. In all, over 11,000 professions of faith were recorded throughout Ukraine. Praise God for the results of this evangelistic event.

Family Time in Ukraine

Pray for church leaders in Ukraine to develop and communicate a vision for proper family time. It is often considered virtuous in the Ukrainian church to spend a great deal of time in ministry, to the point of having a serious imbalance with ordinary home/parenting responsibilities. It is considered normal to be away from home until after 10 p.m. every night. Pray for men in ministry to see the need for, plan for, and make daily choices for a good balance between family time and time in ministry.

Wheelchair Ministry

We also heard good things about the wheelchair project in Japan this past week. A Japanese pastor and 20 people, some of them short-termers connected with Twin Lakes Church in California worked on 13 wheelchairs that were taken to the Philippines on Wednesday. We had some concern at first as the wheelchairs were held up in customs for a day, but then they cleared without further problems. Praise God with us, and also pray for Pastor Noel Pantoja who will be overseeing the follow up on wheelchair recipients.

Interest in Missions

During our visit to Argentina, we spoke with the Northern Association of Baptist Churches about their desire to be involved with missions in Mozambique. We shared about Mozambique and challenged them to move forward in their plans. They already have one couple working in Bolivia however, their director visited us in Mozambique last year and the association feels God leading them to send missionaries to Mozambique. Besides speaking to the yearly meeting of the association we also spoke to a group of about 20 young people interested in missions, to a church, to the missions committee of the association and to two young women who are potential candidates. We challenged them to consider sending a short-term ministry team to spend a few weeks in Africa to experience missions and to prepare those who would then come back as full-time missionaries. God allowed us a great blessing in seeing what he is doing in other countries to raise up missionaries outside of the United States.
