The Marine Mammal Center is seeking a Full-time Response Dispatcher on Maui Island for our Hawaiian monk seal conservation program.

Position Overview

The Response Dispatcher supplies coverage for our Maui island Hawaiian monk seal sighting hotline. They effectively communicate with our volunteer force and the general public to ensure the safety of responders, the general public, and Hawaiian monk seals and to foster engagement in conservation of this endangered species. They are responsible for timely entry and maintenance of sightings data for Hawaiian monk seals. When needed, they assist

with projects or other programs within our Hawaiian Monk Seal Conservation program. This position requires an individual with patience, enthusiasm, self-motivation, and a desire to work with a dynamic team in an ever changing environment.

Key Responsibilities

Coordinate and dispatch response volunteers using our Hawaiian monk seal sighting hotline.
Enter sightings data into national databases.
Respond to public questions and concerns about animals, volunteer opportunities, and general inquiries.
Assist in training of incoming response volunteers and interns.
Assist in building and maintaining community relationships on Maui.
Assists in coordinating assessment and transport of individual Hawaiian monk seals.
Assist with vehicle and equipment maintenance as well as maintenance of response supplies.
Deliver community training and public information programs.
Possible communication with members of the media.
Assist in projects and other programs as assigned by the Hawai'i Response Manager.
Willingness to support and participate in the Center's diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, initiatives, and trainings.

Qualifications and Experience

Current knowledge of Maui and Hawaiian culture ideal.
Previous experience in hotline management preferred.
Previous experience coordinating volunteers preferred.
Must have a valid Driver's License and clean driving record.
Practical computer knowledge with programs such as Excel, Outlook, and Word.
Ability to work effectively in a team environment in unpredictable or high stress situations.
Demonstrated ability to work independently.

Physical Requirements

Ability to sit/stand/walk to complete office work for extended periods of time .
Ability to operate a computer and other office equipment occasionally.
Ability to walk up to 5 miles during a shift on a regular basis.
Ability to occasionally move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds across site and locations .
Ability to drive/operate a vehicle.

Work Environment

Potential exposure to zoonotic diseases.

Ocean Associates, Inc. (OAI) is seeking Hawaiian marine wildlife response support at the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) NOAA Fisheries (NMFS) Pacific Islands Regional Office (PIRO) Protected Resources Division (PRD). OAI conducts research, offers policy advice, and provides personnel support services to government and industry clients for marine fisheries and protected species.

Among its many responsibilities, PRD coordinates responses to strandings of marine mammals and sea turtles in the main Hawaiian Islands, in partnership with the Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center and numerous government agencies and non‐government organizations. The services needed will support stranding responses to live and dead animals in the field and in NOAA facilities on Maui, and to assist with associated data collection, data management, and administrative support. In addition to

responding to true stranding events, PRD devotes significant effort to coordinating responses to "haul outs" of Hawaiian monk seals. PRD's response team also conducts public outreach and community engagement activities to raise public awareness and promote responsible wildlife viewing and ocean use.

Required Knowledge and Experience:

-High School graduate with four (4) years of college level education including courses in the biological or scientific field.
-Experience conducting field work in Hawaii.Experience managing volunteers and/or working with volunteer organizations.
-Marine wildlife stranding response and/or marine wildlife handling experience.
-Marine conservation‐oriented public outreach experience.
-Must have a valid driver's license.

Location: Field sites in and around Maui, Hawaii. Travel is anticipated.

Irrawaddy Dolphin Research Internship – Coastal Cambodia

Marine Conservation Cambodia (MCC) is an NGO based on the island of Koh Ach Seh, in Cambodia's Kep Archipelago. The organisation has many facets, including working to stop illegal fishing practices, ecological and social science research and collecting data to use in the implementation of conservation legislation.

In September 2017, MCC introduced The Cambodian Marine Mammal Conservation Project, in collaboration with the Royal Government of Cambodia's Fisheries Administration. The project's primary aim is to collect data on abundance, distribution and residency to delineate and protect critical habitats for the endangered Irrawaddy dolphin in Cambodia's Kep and Kampot provinces.

We are currently looking for dolphin research interns to join the team between May – October 2022!

Project activities:

a minimum of 3 observational land surveys per week using a Theodolite and Pythagoras software
a minimum of 1 observational boat survey per week
photo-identification techniques using Discovery software
passive acoustic monitoring using a C-POD and CPOD.exe software

Project site description:

The project is based on the island of Koh Ach Seh, a 40-minute boat trip from Kep Town, Cambodia. The island is inhabited only by MCC, a team made up of a mixture of interdisciplinary international and local staff. The accommodation and facilities on the island are basic but well-maintained. You will be in shared and catered accommodation with fellow interns and staff members. All project related resources are provided.

The foundation Deutsches Meeresmuseum is a national and internationally important, specialized natural history museum and is one of the most visited museums in Germany. Its exhibition, collection and research activities focus on marine biology, fisheries and marine aquariums. The foundation Deutsches Meeresmuseum includes the exhibition sites MEERESMUSEUM and OZEANEUM in Stralsund as well as the NATUREUM and the NAUTINEUM.

The growing research department of the Deutsches Meeresmuseum focuses on aquatic vertebrates, European seas and

collection-related research. The German Oceanographic Museum has a long-standing expertise in acoustic monitoring and the effects of underwater sound on marine vertebrates.

The GEOSTOR project aims to develop a roadmap for large-scale storage of carbon in sub-seabed geological formations in the German sector of the North Sea. It will quantify geological storage potentials, identify and investigate possible storage locations, assess environmental risks, develop novel monitoring techniques, study the legal framework and estimate costs for offshore CO2 transport and storage. Part of the environmental risks are effects on the distribution, abundance and physiology of harbor porpoises by an increased need for seismic exploration as part of the monitoring of potential deposits. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry for Science and Education.

Your tasks:

• Evaluation of a large dataset of broad band recordings and click detector data of odontocete echolocation during seismic surveys

• Modelling of porpoise distribution in relation to a seismic source

• Development of sound exposure maps

• Establishing guidance documents and mitigation strategies to protect porpoises during seismic surveys

• Support in project management and administrative processing including budgeting, monitoring of project finances and project control

• Quality assurance, documentation of results and reporting

• Organization of project meetings and scientific conferences

• Representation of the museum at external events with a focus on research

• Cooperation and collaboration in various national and international committees

• Publication of research results in internationally peer-reviewed journals

• Presentation at symposia

• Work at sea to collect data

Your profile:

• PhD in bioacoustics, physics, engineering or biology

• Strong background in underwater acoustics, and/or ecological modelling

• Proven programming skills in Matlab or R

Cetaceans and Marine Fauna research project

Delfini del Ponente Association is looking for an Intern Coordinator to join the team for the upcoming season.

The project

Started in 2018, Delfini del Ponente research project is the first focused on monitoring bottlenose dolphins

(Tursiops truncatus) occurrence and distribution in the Western Ligurian Sea. The project is structured on an annual basis, to obtain data not only on the distribution during the Summer, but also changes across different seasons. The study is already providing very interesting information about this community inside the study area, especially about its social organisation, abundance of individuals, distribution, and movements also outside the region. Moreover, our dataset includes data on several cetacean species and also about other marine fauna such as Mediterranean shearwaters (Puffinus yelkouan), Scopoli's shearwaters (Calonectris diomedea), Northern gannets (Morus bassanus), Sandwich terns (Thalasseus sandvicensis), sunfish (Mola mola) among others.

Surveys are carried out in coastal waters onboard a dedicated zodiac (6 m inflatable boat) around 10 times per month. Training will focus on collecting photos for photo-ID purposes, environmental, marine traffic, geographical (GPS), and dolphins' behavioural data. Land-based surveys take place in Imperia, in 2 different locations around 8-10 times/month with the aim of collecting data on the presence/absence of dolphins, fishing boats in activity and marine birds. Fieldwork is a great opportunity to get involved and improve skills in cetaceans' and marine biodiversity research. Both land-based and zodiac surveys are weather-dependent, and their number can change each month.

Office work (6 hours per day) includes training and lessons to the interns and supervision of all the activities (photo-id work, transcription of data, data entry, QGIS work, etc...)

WHERE: Imperia, Italy.

WHEN: 1 March-30 October 2021 (minimum 4 months, possibly March-June; July-October).

Preference will be given to candidates that can guarantee a minimum of 4 months or a longer period. The intern coordinator will be asked to join the research team one week earlier than the actual start of the programme, to gain all the necessary skills and knowledge.

The Intern Coordinator will be responsible for:

● Assisting the researchers during all the research activities

● Coordinating the interns and volunteers participating in the project with the help of the Project Coordinators

● Be responsible for the cleaning schedule and maintenance of the shared apartment with the volunteers

● Assist with the training of the interns both during office work and fieldwork

● Carry on land-based surveys

● Driving the zodiac and photo-id collection

● Responsible for an own project with the data collected

Skills/qualification:

● Minimum age of 18

● Degree or on-going studies in Biology, Natural Sciences, Veterinary or similar (preferred) with strong motivation to work in marine mammals' research

● Speak, read and write in fluent English

● Be adaptable and flexible as fieldwork is weather dependent

● Have prior experience in cetaceans or boat-based surveys

● Be prepared to spend many hours on a small zodiac (5-6 m) and under the sun, be able to swim and work in harsh weather conditions both in nearshore and offshore waters

● Be prepared to spend many hours in the office (generally 6 hours/day)

● Be sociable and with a positive attitude as he/she is expected to live and work in an international team

● Boat driving licence or experience in handling small boats (preferred)

● The preferred candidate should have a proven track record as a team player as the project will involve working closely with other participants but also must be able to supervise small groups of interns. He/she must also be self-motivated and eager to work independently and responsibly.

VOLUNTEER - Seeking volunteers for online small cetacean bycatch research project

The University of Exeter and Cornwall Wildlife Trust is conducting a research citizen science project to develop and test a diagnosis tool for detecting bycatch in stranded cetaceans using external features, such as encircling marks and other wounds. We are investigating whether it's possible for trained individuals to diagnose bycatch to a high degree of certainty using only external features and to create a diagnostic system to investigate bycatch in stranded small cetaceans, where a post-mortem examination is not possible.

We are looking for volunteers to participate in this research project to help us generate data by examining photos of strandings and identifying possible bycatch features. Volunteers will be given access to online training in the skills of identifying bycatch features on stranded cetaceans. Using your new skills, you can examine real strandings cases through the website to determine whether they were bycaught or not, all from the comfort of your own home. We will use the data you generate to develop and test this new bycatch diagnostic method.

We are looking for volunteers with any level of experience and can be based anywhere, but you will need to;

Be over 18 years old
Be able to commit at least 5 hours to the project
Have access to the internet and a laptop or desktop computer
Understand written English

What will you gain?

Involvement in this project is entirely voluntary, you will gain training and experience examining small cetacean strandings by examining detailed photographs through a web-based system. Volunteering is entirely home-based and can be done in your own time. This is a service/citizen science project, and unfortunately, there are no compensation or college credits available for volunteers.

The Marine Campaign Manager will work as part of the US Campaigns and Policy team to further our North American regional program work, as well as the global IFAW Marine Conservation Program. Role and Responsibilities

Work with the US Country Director and Marine Conservation Director to develop and implement IFAW US marine program campaigns and projects that reduce primary threats to marine mammals, including from entanglement, shipping, and anthropogenic ocean noise, as well as threats to marine life and the marine environment overall;
Manage all aspects of campaign development and implementation, including planning, monitoring, impact evaluation, and providing day-to-day guidance on activities and expectations of the implementing team;
Oversee the mapping of external stakeholders and manage relationships relating to advocacy and campaign work;
Lead on the development and writing of grant proposals and other written products targeted to potential funding sources;
Manage campaign budgets, including fulfilling all internal and external reporting and recordkeeping requirements;
Represent IFAW to the US public, federal and local decision-makers, media representatives, outside organizations, and other key opinion leaders;
Identify media and outreach opportunities, in collaboration with Communications, for both conservation progress and IFAW branding;
Provide reports and updates about campaign progress, opportunities, partnerships and anticipated victories, to IFAW internal stakeholders, including the Executive Management Team, Board Members, Development and Communications colleagues;
Provide technical expertise on all relevant campaign issues and, in coordination with the Sr. Legislative Manager, develop and advocate for policies that advance campaign goals;
Develop a network of key government and NGO partners to support campaign objectives in the US and as appropriate, globally.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Bachelor's degree (B.A./B.S.) or equivalent in Marine Biology, Conservation Biology, Natural Resources, Public Policy, Law, or related discipline preferred. Advanced degree ideal.
Experience: 5+ years of experience with campaign development, implementation and evaluation, preferably involving conservation and/or animal welfare issues
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above
Excellent written and verbal communications skills, including ability to communicate effectively with policymakers, media, and the public
Experience working with diverse audiences and stakeholders to advance conservation programs and priorities
Experience with budget management and reporting
Strong, demonstrated leadership skills
Highly organized, motivated, self-starting, and detail oriented with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
Ability to build and sustain partnerships, including with non-traditional allies

NAMMCO is an inter-governmental advisory body for the conservation and management of marine mammals in the North Atlantic. This includes both cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises) and pinnipeds (seals and walruses). Based on the best available scientific and user knowledge, the Commission provides management advice to the governments of its member countries: Iceland, Greenland, the Faroe Islands and Norway.

Scientific Secretary Position

The Scientific Secretary is responsible for planning, coordinating and

participating in the work of the NAMMCO Scientific Committee and its associated expert Working Groups.

The primary tasks of the position will include: rapporteuring and report writing, as well as editing and collating scientific publications. The Scientific Secretary will also assist the Secretariat in preparing for high level international science/policy meetings; keeping the NAMMCO website up to date with relevant documents, data and research on marine mammals; contributing to communication and public outreach through social media engagement; and formatting policy reports and research articles. The Scientific Secretary will be appointed Editor to the academic journal NAMMCO Scientific Publications, with responsibility to recruit and process submissions to the journal.

Skills Required

This position requires an experienced scientist with a good background in wildlife or fisheries biology. Research experience in or knowledge of marine mammal biology, including knowledge of survey methods, population biology and stock assessment in the context of sustainable management, is highly desirable. Participation in scientific projects of direct relevance to NAMMCO is encouraged where feasible.

A higher degree is preferred. Excellent spoken and written English, a high-level competence in both Word and Excel as well as a good ability in communication and dissemination of scientific information to a general audience are essential. Familiarity with website editing using Wordpress, knowledge of GIS (or another mapping software) and database maintenance is desirable. A working knowledge of a Scandinavian language is an advantage.

The person filling this position should have good leadership qualities and be able to work confidently alone as well as in a team.

The Secretariat is small, and teamwork is important. Given the nature of working in a Secretariat for an inter-governmental advisory body, the candidate should also be flexible, solution-oriented, willing to perform diverse tasks as they arise, and able to meet deadlines under pressure.

Working conditions

The position attracts an international standard salary based on the ICSC-UN professional scale (P3 level, step 1), with private pension scheme, as well as assistance in relocation expenses, and 6 weeks annual vacation with home travel allowance. The initial appointment will be for 4 years, including a three-month probation period, and may be renewed.

The person filling this position should be prepared to travel extensively for meetings within and outside member countries for up to 12 weeks each year.

MARINE ANIMAL REHABILITATION & ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION INTERNSHIP

The National Marine Life Center (NMLC) is now accepting applications for the Marine Animal Rehabilitation and Environmental Education Internship for the Winter/Spring 2022 session. The application deadline is November 1, 2021. The internship will run from the first week of January 2022 through the third week of May 2022.

Animal Care Responsibilities: Depending on need and case load, interns will assist with the care of the NMLC rehabilitation patients including seals, sea turtles, and a variety of native turtle species. Animal Care duties will include animal restraint; cleaning; disinfecting tanks, equipment, and environmental enrichment

devices; diet preparation; administering feeds (including tube feeding); record keeping; facility maintenance; and water quality testing. Interns will also assist animal care staff with medical procedures, admission exams, animal necropsies, and release events.

Education Responsibilities: Interns will assist with environmental education programs, including on-site programs, off-site programs, virtual programs, fairs, and festivals. Programs will focus on marine animals, rehabilitation practices, conservation, and STEM activities. Interns will learn how to effectively interpret and educate guests of NMLC on marine animals and conservation. Interns may be asked to work in the gift shop and assist with various office projects such as fundraising and data entry. Opportunities may be available to create displays for the Discovery Center and help create lesson plans and activities that are aligned with the Massachusetts State Frameworks and Ocean Literacy Principles.

Other Responsibilities: Each intern is assigned to multiple projects in different areas of the organization, e.g. research, fundraising, rehabilitation, marketing, social media or education. A weekly chore will be delegated to each intern to assist with the upkeep of the facility and equipment. Each intern is required to attend regularly scheduled meetings throughout their time at NMLC. At the end of the internship, the intern will deliver a presentation about their experience and projects to staff and volunteers.

Positions are unpaid. Interns must have their own transportation. Housing is not provided, but NMLC will offer suggestions.

Qualifications

Must be currently enrolled in, or recently graduated from an accredited college or university; preference will be given to students or recent graduates working towards biology, environmental studies, marine science, education, or other related fields.
Must demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills.
Must be adaptable, responsible, hard working, willing to learn, and have attention to detail.
Must be able to work independently and as part of a team.
Must be willing to engage in a positive and informative manner with members of the public on a regular basis.
Must be willing to participate in and receive constructive feedback.

INTERNS: Sarasota Dolphin Research Program Internships - Deadline Oct 1st!

Sarasota Dolphin Research Program Internships

The Chicago Zoological Society's Sarasota Dolphin Research Program (SDRP), based at Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, Florida, conducts the world's longest-running study of a dolphin population. The program's primary goal is to contribute to a better understanding of the structure and dynamics of populations of small cetaceans, as well as the natural and anthropogenic factors that impact them. The SDRP uses an interdisciplinary and collaborative approach in conducting studies of bottlenose dolphins within Sarasota Bay, Tampa Bay, Charlotte Harbor, Naples/Marco Island, and the Gulf of Mexico coastal waters. Starting with the Winter 2022 season, the SDRP will select volunteer interns through the Chicago Zoological Society (CZS) during three seasons:

Winter (positions January to April, applications due to CZS by October 1st);
Summer (positions mid-May to August, applications due to CZS by February 11th);
Fall (positions September to December, applications due to CZS by June 1st).

All internships must be a minimum of 10 weeks of participation, but ideally will run for 12-16 weeks.

Please note that we typically only seek 2-4 interns for each session and that we receive many more applications than we have openings – the selection process is very competitive. Successful candidates will participate in the following research projects:

1) Dolphin population monitoring project: (YEAR ROUND) This study monitors the resident bottlenose dolphin community in Sarasota Bay and vicinity. Duties in the field will include assisting with boat-based photographic identification surveys for dolphin groups during one to two weeks per month. Behavioral, location, individual, and environmental data will be recorded for each dolphin group, and additional data related to human-dolphin interactions will also be collected in conjunction with this project. While in the lab (at least 2 weeks per month), work will generally involve photo-identification of dolphins, computer data entry and double-checking, logging of videos into database and archives, dolphin dorsal fin identification catalog updates, boat and field equipment maintenance, and other duties.

2) Dolphin prey and habitat use project: (JAN-MAR & JUN-SEPT ONLY) This study uses the Sarasota dolphin community and fish populations to study relationships between distributions of dolphins and their prey and factors that affect fish community ecology, such as red tide. While in the field, work will involve sampling of fish communities through purse seining techniques and collection of other environmental data. Interns typically participate in this project 2-3 days per month.

3) Other projects (TBD) Interns may participate in other research projects, depending on availability and timing of grant funding for specific projects. Interns may also be asked to assist with dolphin rescues.

Interns should expect to spend about 20% of their time in the field, and about 80% of their time in the lab working with data, or performing equipment maintenance. There is no financial compensation for these internship positions, and successful applicants will be responsible for their own living and transportation expenses. Shared housing opportunities near Mote Marine Laboratory may be available.

Applicants would ideally have the following qualifications:

Minimum of 18 years of age and engaged in or recently completed undergraduate or graduate studies;
A background or degree in marine biology, biology, ecology, zoology, wildlife, fisheries, or a related field;
Basic computer proficiency in Microsoft Office programs (especially Excel and Access);
Excellent verbal communication skills, fluent in English;
Must be physically fit and able to swim;
Must be able to work effectively as part of a team;
Some prior field research experience preferred but not required;
Enthusiasm and desire to learn a variety of field and lab based research methods;
A willingness to spend a minimum of 10-12 weeks working full time as a volunteer with our program.

Right Whale Ecology Program – Habitat Internship

The Center for Coastal Studies (CCS), a nonprofit institution dedicated to the understanding and protection of our coastal environment and marine ecosystems, is seeking a seasonal Right Whale Ecology Program intern from January 04 - May 27, 2022. This long-term project focuses on documenting the abundance, distribution, and behavior of North Atlantic right whales and their food resource in Cape Cod Bay and adjacent Massachusetts waters. The intern will assist the habitat research associate in the collection and processing of zooplankton in the field and lab. Fieldwork responsibilities include zooplankton collection through tow and pump techniques, marine observer, and environmental data collector. Lab responsibilities include zooplankton species identification and counts, plastics analysis, archiving samples, data entry and maintenance, and maintaining field equipment.

Minimum Requirements

- A college degree, preferably in biological/ environmental sciences

- Good memorization skills and strong attention to details

- Basic computer literacy and experience using Microsoft Office programs (Excel, Word, PowerPoint). Experience with database entry and management is preferred

- Experience working on boats, ability to withstand harsh elements, and not be prone to serious seasickness

- Must be able to live and work well in a team

- Enthusiasm and willingness to learn field and lab-based research methods

- Ability to work well under pressure

Preferred Qualifications:

- Plankton identification

- Microscopy and laboratory experience

- Not prone to seasickness

- A valid US driver's license

The successful applicant will be required to work a minimum of four full days per week and will need to be flexible for

research cruises due to weather constrictions. The intern will often process zooplankton samples independently in the lab, thus responsible, detail-oriented applicants are encouraged to apply. Applicants must be available for the full five months and must be willing to work weekends, holidays and evenings as needed. Housing will be provided, as well as a small stipend to cover general living expenses. International applicants must secure their own visas or other required documentation.

CCS has a long history of conservation and research work with the North Atlantic right whale and Cape Cod Bay has been a major critical habitat for over 50% of the estimated population in recent years. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone wishing to expand their skills in marine mammal survey techniques and zooplankton analysis; and will offer the successful applicant the unique chance to work with one of the world's most endangered cetaceans. This internship will afford the successful applicant an invaluable opportunity to work within a well-established institution, with highly-qualified scientists, and to gain experience in boat-based research, zooplankton and environmental collections, plankton identification, plastic analysis, and data entry and analysis. Program Background

IFAW is an international non-profit organization. This internship is based out of our International Operations Center in Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts, USA. IFAW's Marine Mammal Rescue and Research program is a federally authorized program dedicated to marine mammal stranding response on Cape Cod and southeastern Massachusetts. Our program strives to promote the conservation of marine mammal species and their habitat by improving the rescue and humane care of stranded marine mammals, advancing stranding science, and increasing public awareness through education. Cape Cod is a marine mammal stranding "hot spot," with an average of over 261 strandings occurring each year. These strandings include live and dead seals, whales, porpoises, and dolphins.

Stranding Intern Duties

· Stranding hotline coverage: answer calls, document reports, educate callers, dispatch volunteers, complete associated paperwork and enter data.

· Marine mammal stranding response and necropsy: assist staff with all aspects of marine mammal stranding response, including live animal health assessment and supportive care, biological data collection, post-mortem examinations and sampling in both field and laboratory settings.

· Stranding / necropsy readiness: cleaning, organizing and maintaining stranding response and necropsy gear, equipment and facilities, restocking kits and supplies.

· Data entry / sample processing: assist in entry of stranding data. Assist in organizing, cataloging, disseminating and archiving of photos, videos, datasheets, samples, etc.

· Outreach: assist staff with training and outreach material preparation and organization, participate in opportunistic outreach at stranding sites, participate in community events.

Program Description

The Manatee Research Program studies several aspects of the biology of manatees inhabiting the waters of southwestern Florida, including population dynamics, population genetics, habitat use, distributional patterns and social behavior. Field data and samples are collected using photo-identification, aerial surveys, and non-invasive genetic sampling. From spring through early fall, photo-identification, and behavioral sampling are conducted primarily in Sarasota and Manatee counties. During the winter, field work is conducted primarily in Charlotte Harbor and the Ft. Myers area. Aerial surveys are conducted twice per month (during the non-winter) in Sarasota County to assess relative abundance and distribution of manatees in those waters. The long-term database of the program contributes to management and conservation measurements for Florida manatees. Additionally, the program collaborates with manatee researchers throughout the state of Florida and the Caribbean. Internship Description

Internships are available during all four seasons and must be a MINIMUM of 12 weeks. Hours are

typically Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm, although some longer days may be required for field work (especially during the winter season).

Interns should expect to spend about 20% of their time in the field and about 80% of their time in the office/lab. Field work duties include assisting with data collection, boat handling, and equipment use and maintenance. Field work requires spending long hours in the field, sometimes in uncomfortable weather conditions. Office/Lab duties include data entry, processing, matching images to known animals, equipment maintenance, and miscellaneous tasks and errands.

There is no financial compensation for these internship positions, and successful applicants will be responsible for their own living and transportation expenses. Shared housing opportunities near Mote Marine Laboratory may be available. A few scholarships may be available from Mote Marine Laboratory through a competitive application process (US citizens only).

Required Qualifications

Minimum of 18 years of age and engaged in or recently completed undergraduate studies
A background or degree in Biology, Marine Biology, Ecology, Zoology, or a related field is preferred
Basic computer proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially Excel and Access); previous experience using ArcMap GIS is a plus but not required
Excellent communication skills; fluent in English
Must be physically able to stand for long periods of time and lift heavy objects
Knowledge of photography/SLR camera use and/or drawing skills are a plus
Desire and willingness to acquire knowledge and skills related to marine mammal field work and capable of working well as a team

The Beltran Lab at the University of California Santa Cruz is recruiting

2 PhD students interested in the behavior, ecology, and physiology of pinnipeds.

Project overview: We are seeking 2 PhD students to work on a National Science Foundation (NSF) funded project entitled "Rules of death across ontogeny in sexually dimorphic mammals". We will study elephant seals at Año Nuevo Reserve, a 30-minute drive from the UCSC campus, to explore the

tug-of-war between natural and sexual selection. For sexually size dimorphic species, it is unknown how ecological processes such as starvation and predation act upon the disparate physiological and behavioral phenotypes of males and females. This project aims to determine how male and female body size differences throughout ontogeny lead to divergent use of the risk-reward landscape and complete niche segregation as adults. Male and female northern elephant seals will be anesthetized, measured, weighed, instrumented, and sampled from weaning through age four. The resulting data will link three biological disciplines: physiological measurements of diving development and energy demands, behavioral partitioning of 3-dimensional space use and diet due to physiological constraints, and ecological consequences of variation in physiology. A meta-analysis across all seal, sea lion, and walrus species will be used to evaluate how sex-specific mortality rates correlate with the degree of polygyny and sexual size dimorphism more broadly. Together, these aims will determine how ecological risk and reward interact with physiological constraints to drive the ontogenetic development of behavioral strategies in sexually dimorphic mammals.

The positions will begin Fall 2022. Three years of funding (stipend + tuition) are available for each student, with the remaining quarters funded by internal or external fellowships and Teaching Assistantships. Dissertation chapters will reflect project deliverables and can also be tailored to student interest and expertise. One student will lead the movement, diving, and diet components, including stable isotope analysis and 3-dimensional spatial modeling. The other student will lead the morphological and physiological components, including O₂ store and body condition measurements, prey capture analysis, and bioenergetics model creation. Both will be trained in animal sedation and analytical techniques, and gain valuable experience mentoring undergraduate students in field and laboratory activities as well as outreach activities. In addition to data collected during the project, students will have access to an unparalleled 5-decade demographic and biologging elephant seal dataset led by Dan Costa.

We study the ecology, physiology, behavior, and population dynamics of large marine vertebrates. The lab sits within the Ecology and Evolutionary Biologydepartment at the University of California Santa Cruz. We work closely with students, postdocs, and researchers in the Costa Lab. Our goal is to develop a supportive and respectful community that fosters curiosity and exploration, produces high-quality original science, and launches productive and passionate independent scientists.
