"Loving Vincent" - The World's First Film Made of 62,450 Oil Paintings

Loving Vincent is the world's first feature length film in which every single frame is a hand-painted oil painting—that's 62,450 oil paintings! (It's interesting to note that though 1,345 paintings were discarded in the making of the film, there are still 12 oil paintings for every second of this movie.) It follows the life and death of Vincent van Gogh, and incorporates 94 of his actual paintings.

This remarkable specimen of cinema is the collaborative work of 115 painters who have taken cues from van Gogh's signature style. Each painting boasts the psychedelic swirls and post-Impressionist stylings of the troubled yet talented Dutch painter.

It's been 6 years in the making and, now, Loving Vincent is just about ready to be seen in all its glory. As of yet, there is no release date, but if the trailer is any indication... this is a movie that needs to make its way to theaters right now. I'm currently staring at the "Coming soon..." note on the film's site, and my eyes are sparkling (and watering) in anticipation.

Looking Sharpened by Adam Hillman

We're almost at the end, you guys. One more day and this month of blogging is DONE! Another one in the proverbial books. And what a one it was! Allow me to reflect on this month of blogging for a moment...

Basically, I started off on a fairly strong note. I was actually writing substantially. But as the month progressed, my writing waned. As it turns out, blogging while also maintaining a full-time job is cause for burning out. While I did enjoy the fact that I could pat myself on the back each time I got a blog up, no matter how short and dumb the content may have been, I'm eager for October to start—a month in which I don't force myself to blog every day. One more day, you guys. One more day.

iPal: A Full-Time Robo Companion for Kids

I haven't written about robots or robot takeovers in a very long time. It's possibly because we're already in the thick of it. Each of our "smart" phones that we've grown increasingly dependent on is a tiny robot. We've got unmanned cars on the streets, AI assistants scheduling our meetings, and who even goes shopping in a real store anymore?

We haven't learned anything from The Matrix, or classics like Metropolis (silent film or anime version), or even more recent sci-fi favorites like Ex Machina. We continue to write scripts about our surrender to technology and the demise that follows, yet we dive deeper into the tech hole. People line up in the rain for the newest iPhone, iPad, i-anything with complete disregard for their health. And in this i-centric culture, we've now got an iPal—a humanoid device designed to be a full-time "companion robot for kids."

The China- and Silicon Valley-based company (AvatarMind) behind the iPal go on to claim: "With its cute cartoon outlook, fine craftwork, latest natural language understanding technology, and cloud apps, it will be your child's best friend." Let's hope not, but that's an ambitious goal.

Basically, the main takeaway here is that the future is now.... and at this rate, the human race will have no future-future.

Garfémon: Every Pokémon as Garfield

In case the title of this post and the stream of photos just above this text wasn't clear: these illustrations reimagine every Pokémon as Garfield (or Garfield as every Pokémon, depending on how you look at it).

This delightful mashup comes from the pop culture-devouring mind of artist Shawn Bowers, who has aptly titled the series Garfémon. Each character is even given its own Garfield-ified name. Bulbasaur, who? You must mean Bublagarf. Forget about Slowpoke, make room for Garfpoke. And how could any of us forget Meowthfield?

Reinventing the Spoon

Artist Stian Korntved Ruud hand-carved a new wooden spoon each day, for an entire. Just to be clear: that's 365 new spoons, and he did not whittle the same old spoon each day; he actually reinvented the age-old utensil every single day, finding new ways to craft and design the food-shoveling mechanism we all take for granted.

It sounds simple enough, but have you ever thought about how the spoon is designed? What defines it? How do we know a spoon from a knife? (Side note: this makes me think of that Simpsons episode when they went to Australia and played Knifey Spoony.) And once you've figured out the fundamental structure of a spoon, how do you change it without neutralizing its purpose and/or usability?

Point is: this guy has done a great job at maintaining the integrity and functionality of a basic design, all while challenging his creative juices for a prolonged period of time. As if hand-crafting a beautiful, one-of-a-kind spoon in a day isn't enough of an accomplishment, he's done it 365 times over!

This is definitely usable. Looks like the sort of spoons they use on Survivor, actually.

Ok, a funky handle, but still a totally usable spoon.

Might take a little getting used to the shifting of weight/balance, but I get it. Creative.

Right, need to focus on my angles while eating but, hey, got two options for spooning in this one.

Well, this is just a straight up shovel...and I approve.

Aaaaaand...this one is a bit more challenging but I appreciate the artistry!

Nawaporn Pax Piewpun (aka Peaceloving Pax) is a food artist (and also a doctor, according to her IG bio) that gives mundane rice balls a much-needed upgrade—Pokémon style! This culinary creative makes food so cute, it seems almost cruel to eat any of it. Look at that rosy-cheeked little Pikachu, or the sweetly slumbering Snorlax, and how could anyone chomp into the face of such an elated Eevee?

Meet Joey, the baby who is a superstar every time she goes to sleep, thanks to her mother Laura Izumikawa. Whenever baby Joey starts winding down for the night, her mom is ready with a new costume, props, and wig. She's already embodied a diverse range of famous people and iconic characters, including Anna Wintour (just in time for New York Fashion Week), Barb from Stranger Things, and Beyoncé.

Obviously the portraits are super cute, but one of my favorite parts of this mom's fun project is the making-of videos where she lifts Joey's arm and drops it to signify how deeply the baby is sleeping.

Miniature Calendar by Tatsuya Tanaka

Blogging every day for one month out of the calendar year is a self-proposed annual challenge I tackle. Forcing yourself to do a thing every single day is actually a great exercise in whatever it is you're focusing on. In my case, it's an act of discipline and a way for me to have a creative outlet I'm in complete control of (plus, a good way to go back to my humble roots of random blogging/sharing). For Tatsuya Tanaka, who has been challenging himself to create a miniature scene every single day for the last 5 years, it's about honing in on his playful eye on the world and expanding his creative mind.

By comparison, blogging is easy. What Tanaka does? That's regimented genius. I sincerely applaud his dedication to his craft.

This Guy's Transformation Into Every Disney Princess Is Beyond Impressive

There are plenty of cosplayers in the world, and there's certainly been a fascination with Disney Princesses—especially within the last few years—but Richard Schaefer (aka @TheOfficialAriel) may be the best Disney Princess cosplayer around. This 22-year-old makeup master and costume king uses his expert skills to turn himself into the beloved heroines most of us have grown up with. Every character, from classics like Cinderella and Snow White to Frozen's Anna and Enchanted's Giselle, is fair game—each one a challenge he readily accepts and conquers.

I don't know how good this guy is in heels or if he can lip sync, but this fishy queen might have a future in RuPaul's Drag Race, and I can't wait!

French Fry Toppings of the World

Happy Fry-day!

☝︎See what I did there? I made a joke about it being Friday, but I spelled it with the word "fry" because this post is about the wondrous delicacy known as a French Fry.

Enough! Let's get to the meat and potatoes of this post. Specifically, the fried potatoes. (I have the smuggest face right now. It's part-pride, part-self-disgust.)

Personally, I like my fries plain. Just straight-up fried, maybe a choice few dipping sauces, but nothing too fancy. People like to dress their fries up though. Lucky Peach created an interesting list of said fries-plus-other-stuff with accompanying illustrations. I thought I'd go through a few tame ones to reveal how un-experimental I am with my fries.

Cheese Fries

I have to start by saying I don't really like anything on top of my fries. That includes ketchup. I prefer to have it in a side cup, for dipping. Same goes for cheese. I'll say this much: I do like cheese fries. However, the cheese has to be in a cup. Otherwise, there's no even distribution. It's just cheesy mayhem!

Chili Cheese Fries

OK, so now we've ventured into territory where I'm unfamiliar. Yes, it's happened that quickly. And, yes, that means that I've never actually had chili cheese fries.

Disco Fries

Essentially, this is just fries swimming in cheese and gravy. As you may have already guessed—following in the unadventurous record of my fried potato expertise—I've never had this.

Poutine

Let's just get it out of the way: I've never had this. In fact, I have never had a cheese curd, nor do I intend to as it sounds rather unappetizing. So, I don't think I will ever have this gravy-and-cheese-curd-infused concoction.

Wise Words to Live By, As Illustrated by Scotty Russell

Graphic designer and hand-lettering extraordinaire Scotty Russell does a superb job of presenting inspiring quotes and words of wisdom with visual flair. His work first won me over with: "You can't make everyone happy, you are not pizza." From there, I was more than happy to dive into his online portfolio and swim through a sea of delightful phrases complemented by fruitful penmanship and thoughtful sketches.

Russell doesn't just write a quote and draw a little picture. He actually uses words and letters as key visual elements in each message. In addition to the playfulness and humor of the Pizza quote, Russell has a wide range of truly encouraging pieces of advice. Something I still think of on a daily basis is his "Don't let your EGO get in the way" piece. In an industry filled with egos, I never want to add to the list. In this post, I've included most of the ones that have really resonated with me. Some of them are quotes we've all heard before, but the imagery makes it new and puts it into perspective, which is perfect because Russell also goes by the moniker Perspective-Collective.

"The Greatest" by Sia

Sia released a new song and music video this week, and it's another winner. Whoever's responsible for bringing Sia and Maddie Ziegler together has really struck gold. Each audiovisual collaboration is a joy to the senses. To call it a work of art would be a lazy, obvious statement, but nonetheless true.

Writing about this music video is a bit pointless. It's meant to be watched. I'll simply add a little context: this is Sia's tribute to the 49 victims of the gay night club shooting in Orlando from a few months ago. The video features 49 young dancers, one for each innocent life that was lost. Now, go watch the video, if you haven't already.
