Biggest Tsunami and Earthquake in Japan

An earthquake struck 250 miles northeast of Tokyo on Friday 11 March 2011 which creates an earthquake of magnitude-8.9. It is a biggest tsunami of Japanese earthquake history of about 150 years. It killed thousands of people and produces huge destruction to the property, it swept away ships, cars and homes. It also created many fire accidents in various cities of Japan.

The temblor, which occurred 15 miles below the surface, caused a 23-foot tsunami that rolled through coastal areas in Fukushima Prefecture, and a 13-foot tsunami in nearby Iwate Prefecture. Four other northern districts were also hit with similar-sized waves.

In Onahama (a city 270 kilometers northeast of Tokyo) the area around a nuclear power plant was evacuated after the reactor’s cooling system failed. However, Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan told a press conference that no radiation leaks had been detected at Japan's nuclear power stations.

Tsunami which has started from Japan, Asian Pacific has alarmed many other coastal regions; South America, Canada, Alaska, the entire US West coast and the Hawaii. Even for a country accustomed to earthquakes, this one was of horrific proportions.

Tsunami is a word of Japanese language which means harbor/tidal wave originated by the displacement of a large volume of a body of water, usually an ocean, but can occur in large lakes.

'Draw Muhammad' cartoonist MOLLY NORRIS changes name, goes into hiding at FBI's insistence [UPDATED]

Seattle Weekly announced Wednesday that it will no longer run Molly Norris's artwork. The newspaper is also reporting that legally, there is no more "Molly Norris."

Norris -- the Seattle-based illustrator whose cartoon sparked "Everybody Draw Muhammad Day!" earlier this year and a subsequent fatwa against her -- has gone into hiding and changed her name at the guidance of the FBI, reports the Seattle Weekly, which says:

"The gifted artist is alive and well.. But on the insistence of top security specialists at the FBI, she is, as they put it, 'going ghost': moving, changing her name, and essentially wiping away her identity. She will no longer be publishing cartoons in our paper or in City Arts magazine, where she has been a regular contributor."

Seattle Weekly also says that the artist likens the situation to cancer -- the threat could be benign, it could be more serious and sudden.

Comic Riffs had last communicated with Norris in July. Update:On Thursday, Comic Riffs was able to contact the artist, who directly confirmed the report.

Several months ago, FBI officials alerted Norris to what they were treating as a "very serious threat," according to a report. At that time, Yemeni-American cleric Anwar al-Awlaki said that Norris was a "prime target" for execution and that her "proper abode is hellfire."

Awlaki, a New Mexico-born 39-year-old, has been called arguably the highest-profile English-speaking supporter of violent jihad. He has been linked to the recent Times Square bombing attempt and reportedly inspired Texas's Fort Hood massacre.

Norris drew her "Everybody Draw Mohammed Day!" cartoon in April in response to Comedy Central's editing of its program "South Park" and the animated show's attempts to depict Muhammad -- and to satirize reactions to any effort to ridicule Muhammad.

On April 25, shortly after Norris created her "anti-censorship" cartoon, Comic Riffs broke the news that Norris was distancing herself from the illustration:

"I made a cartoon that went viral but [this campaign] isn't really my thing," Norris told Comic Riffs. "Other folks have taken it over."

On May 19, Norris told Comic Riffs that she attended a Seattle-area "Seerah Conference that was started by a local mosque four years ago after the Danish cartoon debacle. The folks there had to babysit me because I was so upset by this whole viral phenomenon."

Several months ago, Norris's April YouTube video of her explanation for the cartoon was "removed by the user." In that video, Norris apologized to "everyone of the Muslim faith who has or will be offended" by her cartoon and supported calling off "Everyone Draw Mohammed Day," which was staged May 20. She also urged America's Muslims and non-Muslims to come together -- to meet "halfway."

The Indian Air Force has ‘grounded’ its fleet of over 100 MiG-27 ground attack fighters for mandatory checks following a fatal crash in West Bengal last week.

A senior IAF official said the aircraft would not be taking part in the Air Force’s biggest ever fire power display, Vayu Shakti-2010, aimed at highlighting its operational and precision strike capabilities by day, dusk and night at the Pokhran ranges on February 28.

The IAF has lost 12 MiG-27 fighter planes since January 2001.

IAF Chief Air Chief Marshal PV Naik said the latest MiG-27 crash might have been caused by a failure of the low-pressure turbine blades.

Asked if the combat maneouvres were aimed at sending a message to Pakistan, he said, “Our demonstration is intended to tell the people of our country, the capability of the IAF, its skills and strategic reach to protect the skies and national interest.”

In yet another crash in IAF, a MiG-21 fighter jet went down near Bagdogra in West Bengal minutes after take-off on Friday afternoon. The pilot, fortunately, managed to eject safely.

While the court of inquiry will establish the exact reason behind the crash, which comes soon after a MiG-27 pilot was killed after his fighter crashed near the Hashimara airbase on Tuesday, preliminary reports said `a technical snag’ led to the accident on Friday.

“The pilot, Squadron Leader Rahul Tiwari, had taken off from Bagdogra airbase on the MiG-21 but within minutes, at about 3.40 pm, reported trouble in the aircraft and ejected,” said an official.

Though some years ago there was a remarkable turnaround in IAF’s high crash rate, which earlier saw over 700 crashes since 1970, killing around 180 pilots and scores of civilians on the ground, a spate of crashes has taken place in recent months.

The aging MiG variants, which constitute the bulk of India’s combat fleet, have of course been the main culprits. The single-engined MiG-21s, in particular, have a horrifying track-record. Of the 793 MiG-21s inducted into IAF since 1963, over 340 have been lost in accidents.

Coupled with the several design limitations in MiG-21s due to their 1960s and 1970s vintage, this was due to shoddy maintenance, poor quality control of spares and inadequate training to rookie pilots. IAF, on its part, is now progressively phasing out older MiG-21 variants like Type-77, Type-96 and Type-75 Bis. On the other hand, it has gone in for an upgrade of 125 MiG-21s into `Bisons’, which will be operated till at least 2020.
