Clever Transforming Furniture

Why is transforming furniture so alluring? Does it appeal to our sense that innovation is progress, the fact that fewer materials for more uses is sustainable or simply a return to the childhood love of things that we can actively change and shape as we wish? Whatever the reason, these designs range from humorous and impractical to jaw-droppingly cool. Be sure to scroll all the way down: the best (pictured briefly above) has been saved for last and check here for more unusual urban furniture.

This comfy number is not one nor two but three pieces of furniture in one: a sofa, lounger and a chair. A good deal of transforming furniture looks or feels better in one configuration or another, but this three-in-one by Roel Verhagen-Kaptein is appealing in each of its transformations.

Normally we think of convertible furniture as transforming from one useful thing into something else with a practical function. These simply elegant folding chairs by Studio Dror collapse into something you might actually want to use simply for wall decoration: a simpler refined furniture solution than sticking cheap folding chairs back into the closet.

Next time you go on a picnic with some friends you may want to grab a second basket, the so-called Mealbox by Igland Design. Fourteen puzzle pieces slip out of this simple container and assemble into a table and chairs that seat six – a humorous variation on fast food.

Compact, clever and portable, the Fence Chair by Alain Berteau is a simple blend of traditional picket fence vernacular and sustainable modularity. The repeated use of a single simple form allows for compact shipping and the seats can be split or joined as needed.

A storable box or subtle side table by all appearances, this articulated shelving system by Bertrand Pinceman folds out into a rather nice bookcase. It is designed to work both on its side and upright.

Marta Antoszkeiwicz’s design is not like most transforming furniture that relies on clever bends, twists and hidden tricks to work. This simple table and chairs set relies only on sliding pieces under and out from under one another. The result, though, is impressive: chairs that go well with the table in either configuration and don’t look like extra elements.

Similar in principle to a Murphy bed (which folds down from the wall when needed) this cabinet dining room set has everything one needs to sit down to a comfortable meal and then slides back into place. Neat as this complete furniture solution sounds, though, it isn’t clear how much space is needed behind-the-scenes to make it work.

Yellow might not be the best color, but you have to appreciate this simply brilliant Tetris-based Chairs + Table design. Aside from the sofa, bed, and chairs-and-tables configuration these also pack up nicely to be stored. The material is designed to be soft enough to be comfortable but resilient enough to work as an eating or work surface. Also, one could imagine that, with sufficient pieces, other creative furniture constructions would be possible.

We’re all familiar with beds that fold out from sofas, but few do so as easily and elegantly as this one by Flou. In Modernist tradition, the form of the bed is also partly visible in the form of the couch with each fold-out layer articulated individually.

Now this one is particularly strange: a stove and kitchen workspace that doubles as a comfortable chair? An odd combination to be sure, but it is a step in an interesting direction. This kind of out-of-the-box thinking could result in furniture that not only serves a similar function to its counterpart but that would have different purposes in various rooms around a house.

Would you believe that everything shown in the above image can be fit into a box that is less than 3 feet by 4 feet? The creative furniture within can be carried, unpacked and rapidly assembled by just two people. It probably goes without saying but: the box itself is also reused in the final results. Antarctica is the coldest place on the earth

Antarctica is a special place, no matter how you look at it. It’s the highest, driest, coldest, and windiest continent, for starters. One way that it’s very special is its position, squatting right on the south end of the Earth.

To begin with, the seventh continent is in the middle of its own lithospheric plate, completely isolated from other continents. It was part of Gondwanaland throughout the Paleozoic, stuck together with Africa, South America, Australia, and India. But then during the Jurassic that supercontinent slowly broke up over a hundred million years, until Australia split from it and left Antarctica alone, beginning in the Eocene about 50 million years ago. Ever since that time, the ocean has surrounded it on all sides, turning around it in a great westward current. Antarctica has gotten colder and colder, cooling the rest of the planet along with it. Over the years, it has accumulated a gigantic layer of ice to a height of 3,000 meters. That huge central mound stands up nearly halfway through the atmosphere, so like a bald-headed man with no hat, it loses heat directly to outer space. The cold air that results flows right off the ice cap by gravity, picking up speed as it goes, until the resulting katabatic winds roar off the continent’s edge onto the sea.

The cold winds freeze the seawater, building up immense areas of solid pack ice every Antarctic winter. The water left behind is saltier and, because salty water is denser than the rest of the ocean, it sinks and slowly moves northward on the seafloor to the rest of the world.

Throughout most of geologic time, the Earth has had a warmer and more equable climate than today. Large areas of the continents were covered by shallow seas, where the limestones and shales and coal measures we see today were laid down. Antarctica has been keeping the world cool lately, though, and by piling up more and more ice, it has drawn down the level of the sea. I’m grateful for that, because I like dry land.

Antarctica is not really responsible for the ice ages we’ve been living through for the past few million years, though. For that, you might blame Panama, which rose out of the water about 3 million years ago and cut off the Atlantic from the Pacific Ocean. Now we have a complicated setup, involving Greenland with its ice cap and currents in the north Atlantic Ocean, that seems to switch back and forth between a cold-climate state and a warmer state, where we are today.

World’s tallest building, Burj Dubai is being constructed by the famous and well-known South Korean Company Samsung Engineering. This South Korean Company had made many famous and antique buildings and towers like Petromas Twin towers and The Taipei 101. The Samsung Engineering & Constructions is building the Burj Dubai in a join Venture with two companies, one is a Belgium Company Besix and another is Arabtec from UAE. The project manager of the main construction contract is Turner. The Reinforced is the primary structural system of Burj Dubai. They used more than 110,000 tones weighing reinforced concrete, which is over 45,000 m3 it means more than 58,900 cu yd to construct the concrete and steel foundation. This concrete and steel foundation has 192 piles buried more than 164 ft deep.

After the Burj Dubai would complete there are use of steel more than 39,000 tones and the use of concrete will touch the quantity of 330,000 m3. It is such an unbelievable thing. If this steel will lie on whole earth end-to-end then it can cover a quarter of the way. This construction will have taken about 22 million man hours.

As construction of the tower progresses, it is becomes more and more difficult for the vertical concrete pumps to pull the concrete at the head of the tower. This work had broke all the records to pump the concrete vertically and made a world wide new record.

The L'Aquila earthquake

Early Monday morning, central Italy was struck by a 6.3 magnitude earthquake. The 2009 L'Aquila earthquake caused serious damage to several medieval hill towns in the region, killing over 260 residents, injuring over 1,000 and leaving 28,000 homeless. Despite the dangers from aftershocks, the search for survivors continues, and will be maintained until Sunday, after which the daunting tasks of cleanup and reconstruction willl begin.

The Worlds Most Dangerous Roads

Guoliang Tunnel Road in China

Deep in the Taihang mountains in China is the Guoliang Tunnel. It took 13 villagers 5 years to carve the 1200m-long tunnel through the mountains to connect their isolated village with the outside world. The tunnel was chiselled out with hammers and steel tools. The walls of the tunnel are unstable and with many twists and blind corners, one could easily drive over the edge into a seemingly never-ending drop. It is not surprising, then, that some of the villagers
lost their lives trying to build this road.

Lena Highway

The M56 Lena Highway in Russia is a truely dangerous road. Despite being a federal highway, it is just a dirt track, that during heavy rains in the summer,turns to impassable mud that can swallow small vehicles whole. The highway gets its name from the nearby Lena river, which feezes over in the winter and drivers can actually drive over the frozen river to reach the city of Yakutsk. The highway is famous for its lawlessness, as trucks get stuck in the mud and become victim to people breaking into them in search of food and warmth.

Bolivia’s Road of Death

This road, like the Lena Highway, is the only connection between many isolated villages in Bolivia. As such, people are forced to navigate this treacherous road that has claimed many lives. It is estimated that 200-300 people a year die on this road and it is littered with crosses showing the places where travellers have lost their lives. Its sheer cliffs, lack of guardrails and its single-lane width, combined with loose rocks and common fog have rightly earned this road as “the world’s most dangerous road” in 1995.

The Halsema Highway

This road offers a beautiful view along its 100km stretch from Baguio to Sagada in the Phillipines. However, with many twists and turns through the mountains it can become a very dangerous journey. It is the highest highway in the Phillipines and the sides of the mountains are liable to landslides and include many ravines and narrow paths, making this journey truely dangerous.

The Skippers Canyon Road

This narrow road snakes its way through Skipper’s Canyon in New Zealand and features vertical drops down to the Shotover River. The 17km-long road has many dangerous bends, and one slip could mean certain death. With the increase of traffic due to technology and tourism, this road has to be maintained regularly to ensure driver safety. Nevertheless, rental car companies don’t allow customers to travel on the road due to its dangerousness.

Highway of Death

This road linking Kuwait to Basra, Iraq was the site where many Iraqi military personnel and civilians were killed by American aircraft. This road has become one of the most famous images of the Gulf War, as both sides are littered with debris and hundreds of vehicles that were destroyed in the attacks. Officially known as Highway 80, its moniker serves as a startling reminder as to how dangerous some roads can be, especially in war-torn areas such as Iraq.

As society advances people seem more and more drawn to the sky and build their homes higher and higher, but you’ll be surprised to know somewhere in Africa some people choose to live underground.

Matmata village

In Tunisia, 450 km south of the capital of Tunis, lies the small but impressive village of Matmata, the largest community of troglodytes (people who live in caves) in the world. The name Matmata comes from the Berber tribe that lives in this area of the country.

The history of how and why this place was first built is unknown but instead there are many stories regarding its beginnings. The most popular one says Matmata was born a long time ago, shortly after the Punic Wars, when the Romans sent two Egyptian tribes to the region and gave them permission to slaughter the locals and make the land their own. The original inhabitants left their homes and fled to the desert where they built new ones into the ground. They would leave their well disguised homes at night and attack the invaders until they managed to drive them away.

Other stories say this ancient settlement was born 700 hundred years ago when the people just couldn’t handle the burning sun. The whole village turned into an underground labyrinth where the homes were linked through intricate tunnels. The temperature inside one of these troglodyte homes remains constantly between 20-22 degrees Celcius during both summer and winter.

One of the most amazing things about Matmata is that although it has been around for at least 1000 years, no one even knew it existed until 1967 when heavy rain flooded the troglodytes’ homes and they were forced to send a delegation to ask the authorities for help. Many underground houses collapsed but with the help of the state, new surface residences were built. Now there are only around 100 dug-homes but they are enough to draw in hundreds of tourists from all around the world, every day.

Now you might say to your self: “this place looks familiar”, and if you are a Star Wars fan, you would be right. This is the place where George Lucas shot the scenes set on planet Tatooine where Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru used to live. In fact if you’re interested in experiencing the troglodyte way of life you can rent a room at the Sidi Driss hotel, it’s surprisingly comfortable and it has served as a set in the science-fiction blockbuster.

Violently Amazing & Uniq Real Weapons Ever Seen

Because you’re sick of your normal guns.

1. War Club (Tomahawk)

We’ll start off with a weapon from the distant past that makes us wonder how the British every colonized America, the tomahawk! Wait a minute, that doesn’t look like any tomahawk I’ve ever seen. In fact, it looks like the soul purpose of that is to slam a spike through your skull, seeing as how there is only one spike! Where did I find this weapon.

2. Brass Knuckle Knife

This brass knuckle knife, technically known as a trench knife was violently amazing for a reason. It was used in the most vicious spot in the most vicious war ever. The trenches in the First World War! Boy oh boy there is nothing that I would rather have with me in close quarters fighting for the sake of the world except for maybe a……

3. Brass Knuckle Gun

Apparently this weapon is so violently amazing that I could not even turn up any information about it other than multiple photographic evidence. It even looks like theres a switchblade at the end of it!!! If thats not a switchblade then it is clearly an arrow pointing to the nearest direction of the person you are supposed to kill.

4. Knife Gun

Ok now this is getting a little bit ridiculous. I take it you can just strap any combination of knifes, brass knuckles, and guns together and get an amazingly violent weapon. Ok that is definitely true, and the knife gun is no exception! Unlike the brass knuckle gun (which may or may not have a switchblade on it) this gun definitely has a huge knife on the end of it. You get the double pleasure of shooting someone when your gun is inside of them, which is also a plus.

5. Pancor Jackhammer

No, it is not some sort of a gun or knife strapped to a jackhammer, its just the most amazing shotgun ever designed. According to wikipedia the Pancor Corporation patented a 12 gauge automatic weapon. And its gas operated! I could not believe it but it seems that this is indeed quite a real gun, and that it can fire up to 10 rounds. Also of note, it was patented in 1987!! Its a miracle any of us made it through the 1980’s and into today so we could witness the power of….

6. Metal Storm

It is described as the Roman Candle of guns, because it uses a concept of stacked projectiles much like the most amazingly violent handheld fireworks in the world. Except instead of using fire to shoot fireballs at you it uses electricity to fire 1 million rounds a minute at you. It’s like bringing a brass knuckle knife to a brass knuckle gun fight.

Today we are featuring older creations, but amazing just the same - Star's weapons! Every one of these little beauties uses one or another piece in an unusual way. Take, for instance, the bat used in the sword above.

This axe makes good use of the Count Dooku lightsaber handle and the new Castle 2007 scythe.

These swords are among my favorite for their overall elegance of design.

Some of the most beautiful and outrageous weapons from the most interesting medieval times. Think about it, maybe King Arthur or the famous and anonymous “Black Knight” used some of these absurd weapons.

The Flanged Mace

The Flanged Mace was a a great close combat weapon in Medieval times. It could smash through the toughest armor when wielded by a horse-mounted knight. As well as being powerful, these weapons were beautiful and extremely detailed as you can see in this picture, there are many engravings in it.

The Trebuchet

The Trebuchet was a siege weapon similar to the catapult. Though this had a different system to it that uses dropping counterweights. It could throw up to three-hundred and fifty pound objects at high speeds into enemy castles. Some times, the user would launch a diseased corpse into the enemies castle and hope it spread disease. This is similar to biological warfare.

The Finger Claws

Handy in close combat, the finger claws could cut someone up or pack a nasty punch. They were good if the wielder was unarmed with a sword such as archers who were only good for fighting long distances. These were a good back up.

In what must be an incredible show of patience and preciseness, there are people in this weird world we all share that make a practice of balancing seemingly implacable rocks on top of each other. The result is surreal and quiet beautiful... if for nothing more than its apparent impossibility.

Houses types and styles vary greatly according to region, climate, culture and tradition :

Earth House

This unique house is located in Switzerland. It is an earth house, an architectural style characterized by the use of natural terrain to help form the walls of a house. An earth house is usually set partially into the ground and covered with thin growth, and is often intended to have a small ecological footprint.

Rondavel
This pretty amazing house is called a rondavel, a traditional African-style house. They are usually round in shape and traditionally made with materials that can be locally obtained in raw form. The rondavel's walls are often constructed from stones. The mortar may consist of sand, soil, or some combinations of these mixed with dung. The floor is finished with a processed dung mixture to make it smooth. The roof braces of a rondavel are made out of tree limbs, which have been harvested and cut to length. The roof itself is made out of thatch that is sewn to the wooden braces with rope made out of grass.

Shell House

One distinct house is the Shell house. It is the most original house in Mexico or maybe in the world. It is one of the most beautiful houses you will surely enjoy. It is located in Isla Mujeres northeast of Yucatan peninsula in the Caribbean Sea.

Rumah gadang

Rumah gadang which means "big house", are the traditional homes of the Minangkabau. The architecture, construction, internal and external decoration, and the functions of the house reflect the culture and values of the Minangkabau. A rumah gadang serves as a residence, a hall for family meetings, and for ceremonial activities. With the Minangkabau society being matrilineal, the rumah gadang is owned by the women of the family who live there - ownership is passed from mother to daughter.

Toda Hut

The peculiar hut of a Toda Tribe of Nilgiris, India is noted for the decoration of the front wall, and the very small door. The Toda people are a small pastoral community who live on the isolated Nilgiri plateau of Southern India. Prior to the late eighteenth century, the Toda coexisted locally with other communities, including the Badaga, Kota, and Kurumba, in a loose caste-like community organization in which the Toda were the top ranking.

Korowai Tree House

This bizarre house is home to the bizarre tribe called the Korowai or also called the Kolufo. They are a people of southeastern Papua (i.e., the southeastern part of the western part of New Guinea). Until the 1970s, they were unaware of the existence of any people besides themselves and some immediately neighboring villages. Only a few of them have become literate thus far. They are one of the few surviving peoples in the world that are thought to possibly still engage in cannibalism. Others dispute this, saying that these practices ended decades ago and that there have been no reported instances of cannibalism in over twenty years.

Trulli House

Trulli houses, distinguished by conical store roof, are traditional in the southeastern region Apulia, Italy.

Palloza

A palloza is a traditional thatched house as found in the in Galicia, Spain. They are circular or oval, and about ten ortwenty meters in diameter. These houses are built to withstand severe winter weather at a typical altitude of 1,200 meters. The main structure is stone, and is divided internally into separate areas for the family and their animals, with separate entrances. The roof is conical, made from rye straw on a wooden frame. There is no chimney, the smoke from the kitchen fire seeps out through the thatch.

Farmhouse

Earth sheltering is the architectural practice of using earth against building walls for external thermal mass, to reduce heat loss, and to easily maintain a steady indoor air temperature. Earth sheltering is popular in modern times among advocates of passive solar and sustainable architecture, but has been around for nearly as long as humans have been constructing their own shelter. The picture above is Earth covered farm houses located in Keldur, Iceland.

Crannog

A crannog is an artificial island, usually originally built in lakes, rivers and estuarine waters, and most often used as an island settlement or dwelling place in prehistoric or medieval times. The name itself may refer to a wooden platform erected on shallow floors, but few remains of this sort have been found.

TurkeyThis Arab-style architecture is located in Mardin, a city in southeastern Turkey. It is commonly recognized for its Arab-style architecture, and it also has a strategic position on a rocky mountain overlooking the plains of northern Syria.

These traditional mud houses are located in Harran. The interesting thing about them is that they were constructed entirely without the use of wood. The design of these mud houses is believed to have stayed the same for at least 3,000 years, until about the 1980s, when they officially stopped being used as living space.

IndonesiaThese distinctive wooden houses have curved roofs with tall gable ends that make them look likes boats. The houses are built on stilts and are entered by curved steps and beautifully decorated doorways. They are the homes of the Toraja peoples, who live in central Sulawesi.

House of Marsh Arabs: Iraq

The Houses of the Marsh Arabs are built from reeds. They are often constructed on floating platforms woven from tips of reeds still growing up out of the swamp. The people travel around by canoe. The Marsh Arabs' lifestyle is threatened by drainage projects that are taking water from swamps, causing them to dry up.

Log Cabin House: USA

The log cabin house is among the first house designs of early America. It is sturdy and easy to construct, and can be built by hand to provide shelter in a very short period of time.

Reed Houses and Boats:
Lake Titicaca, Peru

The Uru people living around Lake Titicaca (the highest navigable lake in the world) build their boats and houses out of reeds. Clusters of houses stand on floating rafts, which are also made of reeds.

Blockhouse: USA

A blockhouse in Muskegon State Park, Michigan

This typical pioneer fort was designed to defend the community from attacks of Indians. Early American settlers built long blockhouses to defend themselves against Indians. The logs were pierced with slits through which defending riflemen could fire.

The modern Mossis of Burkina Faso live in round clay/mud huts with thatched roofs with some villages protected by mud walls.

The natives of Polynesia actually live in Tiki Village on Moorea Island in thatched huts. This way, they preserve crafts that are hundreds of years old.

Wood-Ribbed House: Cameroon
This house is made entirely of wood.

Yurts: Kazakhstan

Yurts are traditionally used by Kazakh villagers. They still live in Yurts and herd livestock as their ancestors have done for generations. A yurt is a portable, felt-covered, wood lattice-framed dwelling structure used by nomads in the steppes of Central Asia.

Palm Hut: Tuvalu

Traditional homes thatched with palm leaves and some have open side to allow air to pass through. Islanders of Tuvalu live in villages of open-sided houses with steeply sloping roofs. The houses do not need thick walls because the climate is warm all year round.

Tukul: Ethiopia

The thatched hut, called tukul, is divided by a partition. The family is housed on one side and their cattle on the other.

Nipa House: Philippines
This house, typical of the Philippine countryside, is built using nipa leaves and bamboo. The nipa are processed and sewn into 'pawod', and used to cover the bamboo frame.

Stilts are common along rivers and in the coastal lagoons.

Glass House: Connecticut, USA

This unique looking glass house was designed by Philip Johnson. It has been regarded as one of the world's most beautiful and yet least functional homes. The design of the house is often cited as a model example of the International Style.

Cave House: Italy

This cave-house in a shape of a human face is located on Bomarzo, Italy. This cave house was built around 16th century.
