George Denis Patrick Carlin died of heart failure yesterday. He was 71.
(May 12, 1937 – June 22, 2008)

Seven Words You Can Never Say On Television

Carlin was best known for his routine “Seven Words You Can Never Say On Television,” which appeared in 1972’s “Class Clown” album.

When Carlin uttered all seven at a show in Milwaukee in 1972, he was arrested for disturbing the peace, the AP reported. The comedy sketch prompted a landmark indecency case after WBAI-FM radio aired it in 1973.

The case was appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court where the justices ruled on a 5-to-4 vote that the sketch was “indecent but not obscene,” giving the FCC broad leeway to determine what constituted indecency on

“So my name is a footnote in American legal history, which I’m perversely kind of proud of,” Carlin said. “In the context of that era, it was daring.”

“It just sounds like a very self-serving kind of word. I don’t want to go around describing myself as a ‘groundbreaker’ or a ‘difference-maker’ because I’m not and I wasn’t,” he said. “But I contributed to people who were saying things that weren’t supposed to be said.”

Spore: Creature Creator free trial

In anticipation of Spore’s release, Electronic Arts has released it’s creature creator.

It’s not the full game, but it’s still lots of fun! Mold a viable organism designed to thrive or make something completely ridiculous! You’re only limited by your imagination.

This is a great tool the whole family can enjoy. Your creations can be shared online with others. Hundreds of thousands of wacky animals are being uploaded every day!

This creature creator is the precursor to the Spore game. The full game will have your own creations competing with creatures others have created. Survival of the coolest!

Team Fortress 2 free weekend and Pyro goodies

Valve’s Team Fortress 2 will be freely available to download and play all weekend long. This free weekend begins Friday at 11am PDT. Also, you can now play the first 11 levels of the groundbreaking puzzle game Portal for free!

You will need to download the Steam client and create a free account to play both games. Do it now!

This TF2 free weekend celebrates the release of the newest “Meet The Team” videos, “Meet The Sniper”.

Also, the much-anticipated Pyro update will be released this Thursday. Much like the Medic update, this will introduce three new Pyro weapon alternates and 35 new achievements to complete (required to unlock the weapons, of course).
Finally, the Pyro update will also include two user-created ‘custom’ maps. Valve’s way of saying “thank you” to the mapping community.
