Identify your local competitors and find their best deals.

Hang on to any service provider promotional offers you receive in the mail. Write down the details of any cable commercials you see. Google “cable service -insert town name-” to find the best deals in your area.
You may even call local competitors and speak to a representative about switching over to their services. But, don’t switch yet! Just take good notes.
Individual results will vary, but in my area I was able to find that Optimum Online and Verizon Fios both offer a similar “starter” package: get Cable TV, Internet and Phone for $95/month for one year.
I normally pay $150/month for that! What a great deal! I should switch to their service.. or should I?

Call your provider and threaten to cancel.

Get your most recent bill and have your notes on competitor promos handy. Call your provider, give them your information and tell them “I’d like to cancel all my services”.
Don’t worry, they’re not letting you go without a fight.
They WILL ask why you are canceling. Simply tell them about the great promo from company XYZ and how you will be able to save hundreds by switching to their service. At this point, they will probably transfer you to their “cancellation department”..

Except, you actually get transferred to a sales rep who has the ability to lower your bill or give you free stuff. Explain to them why you are canceling. They will either A) offer to discount your bill B) give you free stuff (extra movie channels.. etc.).

It costs your service provider almost no overhead to provide you with services.

It is in their best interest to keep you as a customer. This is why they WILL cut you a deal.

Don’t stop here! Still complain that either the bill is just too much money each month or that you really want to have access to the extra channels promised by company XYZ. You might be able to squeeze out another discount/bonus.

Do it again.. and again.

The perks they just gave you will probably only last for a year. There’s nothing stopping you from calling them back and doing it again!

I cut my bill down from $150/month to $100/month by doing this. That’s $600 a year. Free money!

Now, dedicating yourself to building a successful blog isn’t easy and takes commitment. However, just getting a .com of your own and starting a blog couldn’t be simpler.

Required for this tutorial: Burning desire to have your words read by the billions of people who use the Internet.
To change the theme of your blog, you will need a working knowledge of and access to FTP software.

Identify your niche and figure out a good domain name

What are you going to blog about? Will this be a personal “what I did today..” blog or will you be writing about celebrities, sports, politics..etc? You’ll want to eventually pick a domain name (ie wormbrain.com) that reflects either something about you or what your site will be about. I picked wormbrain.com because I didn’t know what I wanted my site to be about. That’s ok too!

Buy the domain name and hosting

While the domain name is just “yoursitename.com”, you will need to also buy a hosting package. Hosting is basically renting space on the hosting company’s server to put your blog files, pictures, clips..etc.
I recommend namecheap.com for both domains and hosting.

Search for your domain name on the namecheap.com front page. Unless it’s totally obscure, chances are your domain name of choice is already taken. Use namecheap’s “bulk domain search” and put in several domain name choices. Write down your favorites that aren’t already taken. Once you find THE domain name you want, add it to your cart. Take care! Your domain name should be something easy for people to remember and spell. Don’t get silly and pick something like w0rmbra1n.com. Keep it simple.

Click “add web hosting” on the shopping cart page. Pick your hosting plan. You must at least use “Basic Hosting”. I recommend using “Pro Hosting”, especially if you ever plan on buying/hosting more domains in the future.

Confirm your purchase.. and wait

It will take anywhere from six hours to two days for the hosting company to marry the domain name and hosting account together. Do some brainstorming and draft some blog posts in the meantime! Some of your most creative ideas will come to you at inopportune times. Carry a pen and paper or type notes into your pda/phone. Make a list of ideas, then hash them out in front of your computer later and see if they work.

Set up Wordpress

Wordpress is a great open source blogging platform and it is highly customizable. Plus, most hosting control panels let you one-click install it!
Once you’re received your username and password via email from namecheap.com, log in to the control panel of your site. This will be located at something like “http://yoursitename.com/cpanel”. All of this information should be in the email.

Once in your site’s cpanel, click on “Fantastico”..




Look at all the stuff you can install! We’re just blogging here, so click on “Wordpress”.
Click “new installation”. If the blog is going to be the focus of your site (it should!), install it on the root directory (leave “Install in directory” blank).
If not, then install it in a directory like “/blog”.
Enter the rest of the info: admin name, password… and install Wordpress!

side note: Normally you would have to manually install the blogging software, create a MySQL database, set file permissions.. Fantastico does all of this for you with one click.

Check out your blog!

Go check out your new blog! Your first post will automatically be “Hello World” and your blog will have the ugly default theme. Let’s change that. Under “Meta” click on Login. Log in to your blog control panel with the same info you used when installing Wordpress.

In a new window, go to wordpressthemes.com. Pick a theme you like and download it. Fire up your FTP software of choice and upload the theme folder into yoursite.com/wp-content/themes. Make sure to upload the theme folder and not the parent folder!

Back at your blog control panel, on the right side click on Appearance then Themes. The theme you uploaded should be previewed here. Click it and activate it. Go check out your your blog. Look any different?

The next steps

This how-to is intended as a rough guide to getting your own .com blog up and running. Your journey is far from over however! There is still much to do. Here are some ideas..

Create an account at wordpress.com, get your API key and activate the Askimet plugin on your site. This will eliminate 99% of all spam comments you will receive. Your new blog isn’t getting spammed yet, but it will be eventually. This step is pretty much mandatory.

You will need to check out more themes to find one that you REALLY like. Go nuts and find the perfect theme.

Google “Wordpress plugins” and check out all the cool things you can install. Try some out!

Install the “All in One SEO” plugin soon after you create your blog. This will help make your site more friendly to search engines like Google, Yahoo ..etc

Use Google’s Webmaster tools to index your site, verify the sitemap and robots.txt files.

The widely anticipated create-a-creature game Spore was released earlier this week. While not a true “multiplayer” game, the millions of custom creatures/buildings and vehicles created by other people will show up in your game…eventually.

Jump to see how you can fix this, and add quite a few really cool creations to your Spore game right away!

By default when you play the game, most of the creations you see will be your own and those of Maxis, makers of the game. It’s up to you to hunt around online to add the creations of others to your Sporepedia, thus making them show up in your games. This is a pretty tedious process. Fortunately, there’s an easier and faster way..

If you add a experienced creature creator as your Spore buddy, you will have access to ALL of their creations in the game. Add a few buddies, and you’ve got plenty of great custom content. Plus, as they create more stuff, you’ll see more stuff in the game.

I’ve collected a few of the finest Creators from the Spore Tips blog. To add them as your buddy, simply log into the Spore website with the same email address you play the game under. Then, click each of the names shown below. When their page loads, click the gold plus icon to add them as a buddy. You will now see their creations in your Spore games.
