Went to the ENT today for a followup on the CAT scan and a rundown on how we’re gonna treat the tumor in my ear canal.

The good news is that the tumor is non-invasive. It has not bored its way into my skull. My beautiful brain is hunky-dory.

Apparently my doctor found the tumor in a very early stage. After several weeks of ear drops, it was softened enough for her to rip it all out. No anesthetic, so it was painful as balls.

The bad news is that the tumor will grow back — and keep growing back for some time. Which means I’ll be making regular trips to the ENT to have sharp objects thrust into my ear. Yippee.

Ouch! Glad they got that sucker FD!

adamiss:

One way to examine this sort of wealth is to compare it to yours. Consider an average American of modest wealth. Perhaps she has a net worth of $70,000. Mr. Gates’ worth is 800,000 times larger. Which means that if something costs $100,000 to her, to Bill it’s as though it costs 12 cents. You can work out the right multiplier for your own net worth.

So for example, you might think a new Lambourghini Diablo would cost $250,000, but in Bill Gates dollars that’s 31 cents.

A nice home in a rich town like Palo Alto, California? Two dollars. That nice mansion he’s building? A more reasonable $63 to him.

You might spend $50 on tickets, food and parking to take your date to see an NHL hockey game. Bill, on the other hand could buy the team for 50 Bill-bills.

You might buy a plane ticket on a Boeing 747 for $1200 at full-fare coach. In Bill-bills, Mr. Gates could buy six 747s (Not tickets, the planes themselves). Two for him, two for Melinda and two for young Jennifer Katherine.

(via my colleague Tom)

Using this math one can come to the conclusion that there’s no way for Gates to effectively participate in our capitalist system (keeping the money moving around). He simply has too much cash. That’s a serious kink in the old trickle down theory. Of course, Gates partly found a way around this problem with the Gates foundation. Even then, I suspect that he still has more $$ than he can effectively spend.

BTW, I’m not criticizing Gates. I think the work his foundation does is unparalleled. But money in motion needs to stay in motion. When it accumulates at this level in the pockets of a select few, it can stop moving altogether.

The way it starts - mechanical drum machine hits and organ blast - makes you think that it is just another track off of their self-titled debut. “Get out of 2006, Beach Hou…” But before you finish that thought, the track has exploded. Compared to their somnambulatory jams of years past, this track is Babe Ruth calling his shot in the bottom of the ninth. Phrases like “hazy and ambling,” which once seemed so appropriate for their past work have no place alongside Victoria Legrand’s pant-and-yell chorus routine. The woozy guitars are still firmly in place, and the organ is still the backbone of the track, but the drums have sprung to life and the contrast between the verses, which feel like stretched taffy, and the lush, powerful chorus provide a dynamic which Beach House has never achieved before. This is the sound of a band stepping up its game.

My blog might not be the prettiest thing in the world, but it’s mine. And that’s important to me. I’m surprised that few others seem to feel the same way.

Beck’s insane ten-and-a-half minute tribute to experimental composer Harry Partch, veers from hip-hop to country to psych to R&B, covering Beck’s entire career. According to Beck’s site, the tune is “a tribute to the composer and his desire to make the body and music unified into what he termed ‘Corporeality.’ The song employs Partch’s 43 tone scale, which expands conventional tonality into a broader variation of frequencies and resonances.” Listen here.

Artist Jean-Claude dies at 74

She met her partner Christo in Paris in 1958. They have been collaborating for 51 years.

The family statement said Christo was deeply saddened by his wife’s death but was “committed to honor the promise they made to each other many years ago: that the art of Christo and Jeanne-Claude would continue.” That includes completing their current installation, “Over The River”, a series of fabric panels to be suspended over the Arkansas River in Colorado, and “The Mastaba,” a stack of 410,000 oil barrels configured as a mastaba, or rectangle with outward-sloping sides, envisioned for the United Arab Emirates.

Like all their projects, these are intended to be temporary, a quality at the heart of the artistic enterprise. Whether executed in oil drum or brightly colored fabric, the art of her and her husband, Jeanne-Claude said, expressed “ the quality of love and tenderness that we human beings have for what does not last.”

NYT

The old arc of a news story went like this: News happens. Media cover news. Audience reacts, then turns in for the night. For the past several years, however, there’s been another step added to the end of the process: being held to account for our faults by a comedy show with a sharp eye and a sharp tongue. How did we live without it?
