Ok so some of you have yet to subscribe to the new blog where all the new WPJunkie posts will take place so I thought I would post the link here for the first few just so those who are still subscribed to WPJunkie’s feed can see what design blogs are being posted. The first real one is here and its called 20 Free Wordpress Themes That Will Rock Your Socks!! I thought it would be a pretty fun idea to start a new weekly post called Theme Thursday where every Thursday I post up a new Wordpress theme that I found while digging through the internet. Negatendo Wordpress Theme

Negatendo is another theme from Chris over at JungleJar.com that is similar to the Helium theme (the one I use here on the site and on my blog) but is more on the darker side. The features that I love about these themes are the breadcrumbs at the top of each page and the advertising space in between the posts that are pulled in the sidebar. The code is very easy to navigate through so tweaking things to your liking is a sinch. Of course I love the thumbnails on the homepage as I’m a sucker for this feature! Here are some features that he lists on the site about the theme as well as links to download and preview it.

Learn To Build Themes

I’m a subscriber to many design blogs here on the interweb but one of my favorites to check out is Design Reviver. The posts on Design Reviver are always so informative and well written that its hard not check every day but unfortunatly I have been slacking and just saw this post yesterday. Its a very informative post about learning to design and create your own theme! Great links are provided with some great tips and its well worth the read if you ever think of designing your own theme.

Theme Express: New Side Project

There are so many themes out there and there are many showcase sites showing them off but I cant help but notice that they usually post almost any theme handed to them. I then decided that I would make my own Wordpress theme gallery and showcase only the best of the Free and Premium Wordpress themes available. I get a lot of themes submitted to me here on WPJunkie and will soon post them up on both sites but this will not always be the case. Not all the themes on ThemeExpress will show up here on WPJunkie so its a good idea to check it often. I will try to update it every Monday or Tuesday with as many themes as possible. It is still in “Beta” version so there might be some changes to the site but for the most part

25 Free Icon Sets

Its pretty late and figured it would be a good idea to add some content to my sites while I have some free time so I thought I would make a little Icon Set post here on WPJunkie. Below is a brief list of 25 random free icon sets that I thought might be useful to you guys and girls. I say random because some are social icons, RSS icons and a little mix of misc. ones. Some you might have seen and some you might not but most can be found on Smashing Magazine or by simply looking on Delicious or Digg. I will be putting together another list but of social icon sets soon as well as another for RSS icons so if you have any suggestions let me know

WPJunkie Facelift

I love taking themes and tweaking them a little here and a little there to get what I like. I have done this with every theme on all of my sites because it not only helps make your site different from others that might use the same theme but also helps you learn a little coding. I had my previous theme for WPJunkie for about 3-4 months and decided that I was a little bored with it and it was time for change so I began to search for a FREE theme to tweak and use here. I searched and searched but was at a stand still as most were too far from what I wanted or I had already tweaked it in the past or for a client. Then I received an e-mail from Chris over at JungleJar about a new theme that he released called Helium which I had previously posted about (last post I believe). The theme featured the thumbnail enabled homepage which is a feature I love in Wordpress and had a nice featured category section in the sidebar. It even had the original orange feel that I was looking for!! So of course I had to get it and begin the tweaking.

The first thing I focused on was the homepage where I wanted to be sure to do was get my 125×125 banners their own little place so I simply pasted the script code from Rotatee in place and BAM! It was up and running. I then noticed that my Twitter and little “about me” section was gone so I went ahead and pulled that over and placed it right above the 125×125 banners. Perfect! I wanted to be sure people had plenty of access to the RSS feed, my Twitter account and MyBlogLog account so I simply added each buttons code into the sidebar’s php and voila! Thats pretty much it for the front page other then the date layout and the authors names that I changed.

The single posts page was my next victim. I wanted the same feel as my old layout which was the larger “thumbnail” at the top of each post. I did this by using the same custom field call that the homepage thumbnails use except changed up the image size variables. Simple. I wanted a similar footer as the past theme but not exactly the same so added an area with the social bookmarking buttons, RSS feed button, Twitter button, category and tag lists as well as a few related posts. Of course I had to add some Google Adsense in the mix as well as change up the date and author layouts just as the homepage.

Other then removing the third sidebar on the page’s, that’s about all I had to do as the sizes and colors were already perfect for me. This is a free theme offered by Chris at JungleJar along with a few others that are what I would consider more on the premium side considering their features and great layouts. Helium Wordpress Theme

I woke up this morning to an email on my iPhone from Christopher over at JungleJar telling me he has released a new theme so of course, I had to investigate. The theme is called Helium and has the main feature that I love to see in Wordpress themes and that feature is what kids?…..That’s Right! THUMBNAILS!!! Wordpress is designed to be a blog platform but with the simple implication of thumbnails a site/blog takes on a whole new look and meaning. It has a few other features which I love that include:

Gravatar support
Wordpress 2.6.2 ready
Widget ready sidebar
Page links created dynamically as you create them in the admin panel
and most of all….ITS FREE!!

With such a great theme available for free, it makes it hard not to switch the theme on my main blog. It has some nice advertising space and a very nice and clean look and feel. Be sure to subscribe to his RSS feed to stay up on updates and news about his theme as I foresee a lot of great things coming from this guy.

Blue List Theme

This is a very simple theme that I made as a “frame” theme. I call it a frame theme because I made it to be more of a clean slate for users new to editing themes. Many people start by editing already established themes but this can be difficult if the theme is very complex which is where this theme comes in handy. It was made with some features that many like to see in themes but still need that personal touch, which is where you come in!

It has a widgetized sidebar and footer as well as ad space at top for a 468×60 banner and 125×125 banners in the right side sidebar. Thumbnails are generated using the custom fields area when writing the actual post.

Quick Overview:

This theme has three sidebars: topad, footer and sidebar.
The top ad is made for a 468×60 banner that you insert into a text widget through the widgets page.
The side bar is just that, a sidebar where you can place any widget that you see fit.
The footer has plenty of room for widgets so feel free to add what your like.

How do I post thumbnails?
When creating a new post you will need to scroll down to the custom fields area and use “thumbs” as the key and put the images url in the value area.

How do I change the logo?
The easiest way is to make a new image that you want to be your logo and save it as “logo.png” and upload it into your images folder via ftp.

How do I change the Ads?
The 125×125 ads to the right can be changed by uploading your 125×125 banners and replacing their url with one of the ones located in the sidebar.php file and changing the link url as well.

It is a very simplistic theme that many should enjoy!

Jin v2 Wordpress Theme

I love free Wordpress themes especially the image heavy ones like this one from JungleJar.com. Its called the Jin v2 Theme and has a very nice portfolio style layout with many images which I like because it tends to give readers a better idea of the post.

Daily32 Wordpress Theme

Over on DailyBlogTips.com there is a great list of themes available for download and this is just one that I thought was really nice. It has a great header that displays popular posts, resources and a subscribe area for your RSS feed which is Feedburner ready! The footer also has a nice three tier set up which displays blogroll, archives and recent comments. Of course any and all these can be easily customized to display what you like, how ever you like. It even has an area for 125×125 advertising which is nice. While your there be sure to check up on all the other themes they offer as they you might find one that better fits your tastes.

Web Design Cheat Sheets

I found a post yesterday that I knew I had to share with others! This is a great list of design cheat sheets compiled by Jacob Gube over at Six Revisions. It has sheets for Photoshop, color codes, typography, dimensions, css, html/xhtml, Dreamweaver and Illustrator!! Now thats a damn good list if you ask me and I figured a few of you would find it pretty beneficial while customizing your Wordpress or other sites.

JunkFolio Wordpress theme

This is a Wordpress theme I made to turn Wordpress into a nice, quick and easy portfolio. The theme uses custom fields to pull in the thumbnails and auto resizes them. Clients name and link to the work are also pulled using custom fields and are then displayed above the thumbnails on the homepage and to the left on the single post page. The footer is already set to display the most recent posts, list your categories and have an excerpt from your about me page.

Not everyone does photogrophy, web design or art so this theme allows those with videos uploaded to sites like YouTube or Metacafe to display them by using the custom fields. Videos are pulled in and displayed on front page and single page views.

Unlike most portfolio theme’s, Junkfolio allows you to have single post views allowing viewers to leave comments on your work!

Scruffy Wordpress Theme

I was looking around on Delicious when I found this theme. I liked the “written on paper” look and feel it has and the way the links at the top rollover. Its simple yet very different and when it comes to a layout you want to be different.

Be sure to check out some of their other themes as well. Pretty great stuff considering they are free!

I found this on Torova’s Delicious feed and thought this would be a great inspirational post since I havent posted in a while. Sixrevisions.com made a great post of some great themes made in Wordpress that really show off what can be accomplished with such a simple blog publisher!
