Kobe Bryant by the (jersey) numbers

As Kobe Bryant gets ready to put a bow on a sterling 20 year NBA career, one has to wonder how he will fuel his competitive fire after professional basketball. His killer instinct on the court could never be questioned and the desire to be the best resonated all the way down to the number on his jersey. It is common knowledge that Kobe began his Lakers career wearing the number "8". However as he advanced further in his career, already a three-time champion by way of three peat, Kobe decided to change his number to "24". There are a couple of ways the change can be viewed: a bold statement about his emancipation from the Shaquille O'Neal era that ended prematurely in my opinion due to inflated egos and bickering, or the genesis of the persona that would come to define him in the wake of the deterioration of his carefully crafted image as a result of his sexual assault charge... The Black Mamba.

Although he says switching to the number "24" represented his 24-hour work ethic, if you ask this writer, the change represented a relentless determination to usurp arguably the greatest professional basketball player of all time and Bryant's idol Michael Jordan. Everyone with eyes knows that Bryant was obsessed with Michael Jordan who happened to wear number "23". 24 was one more than 23. One can look to the US Olympic Team. Do you think Kobe wore number "10" because he idolized Clyde Drexler? Again, Jordan wore number "9" as a member of The Dream Team. One up on Jordan. Kobe could easily have seven rings which would have again put him one up on Jordan, but losses to the Detroit Pistons in 2004 and the Big Three of the Boston Celtics in 2008 dashed those dreams. All that was left was to pass Jordan in other areas (All-time scoring list, all-star game scoring, etc.).

Kobe Bryant will leave the game he loves tonight (April 13) with one less NBA championship than Michael Jordan, yet while he never got one up on Jordan with rings he can be comforted to know that Jordan acknowledges Bryant as the only player that can play him one-on-one. Time will tell if Bryant will be considered number 1 and that's the only number that counts.

Barack Obama Owns His State Of The Union Address

A defiant President Barack Obama laid out his plan for his final two years in office in front of a joint session of Congress and the nation on Tuesday night (1/20). Obama proudly took credit for the boom in the economy and stock market, as well as the low unemployment rate and healthcare. He made no mention of the Republican victory in the midterm elections (as he shouldn't since they don't give him credit for anything), and spoke like a man on a mission to finish his tenure strong.

Obama was at his charismatic best drawing laughter and standing ovations throughout his speech. The line of the night came when the President went off script claiming he had "no more campaigns to run", a statement which drew sarcastic clapping from a few Republicans, as if they were saying "thank goodness". Obama quickly snapped back: "I know because I won both of them!"

The truth of the matter is Obama has improved the state of our country tremendously by allowing the lower and middle class the opportunity to attain some of the benefits of the wealthy (i.e. healthcare, employment). He captured and killed the world's most dangerous terror leader Osama Bin Laden, brought troops home from Afghanistan, our economy is thriving, pulling it from the depths not seen since The Great Depression, and he is trying to grant a free education to people who want to get their Associate degree among other things. If Republicans were honest with themselves instead of trying to oppose him at every turn based on political association they would see Obama has moved the United States forward.

Obama looked like a man who has no apologies for how he ran the country and I loved every minute of it!

R.I.P. Stuart Scott

I can't lie. When I first heard Stuart Scott on Sportscenter I did not like him. I thought he was trying too hard to be down with the young crowd. He was incorporating Hip Hop vernacular into sports journalism, something that had not been done before. Scott took a lot of heat, not only from me, (let's face it who was I?), but from a lot of sports fans who wanted their highlights free of rap references. But the beauty and strength of Stu was that he never wavered. He stayed the course during the 90s where ESPN's signature program was filled with personalities who all had their own catch phrases that made them as popular as the athletes they spoke about. Chris Berman had "Back, Back, Back" when calling a homerun ball, or "He - could - go - all - the - way" when calling a touchdown run. The gruff tone of Keith Olbermann's sarcasm ("He's not gonna get him! He's out.) when teamed up with Dan Patrick created the best dynamic duo in prime time.

In 1996 when Scott teamed up with Rich Eisen, the two hit the ground running and never looked back. Eisen's high pitched "he scores!" when calling a hockey goal was matched by Scott's "Booyah!" or "as cool as the other side of the pillow". Scott grew on me and the more I watched him, the more Hip Hop references made it into my favorite program. Scott made his statement, carved his own niche. I couldn't be mad at that. He was an innovator, a pioneer. Ahead of his time, not only being one of the few African American sports journalists on ESPN at the time, but because he spoke like the kids on the street, the rappers in the videos. He seemed like an old man to me, a teenager at the time, but he was the same age as the rappers I grew up idolizing. The more I watched Scott, the more I realized no other sports anchor, let alone journalist, was implementing Hip Hop into anything resembling news in such a public forum as Scott was. Soon "Pookie and Ray-Ray and 'em" was just a part of our sports viewing family as the athletes on the highlights.

So I'll call him butter cuz he was on a roll. Rest In Peace Stuart Scott. Thank you for changing the face of sports journalism.

In case you haven't heard LeBron James 2.0 makes his season debut in front of his hometown fans once again. Ever since LeBron announced he was returning to Cleveland in July, there have been interviews, commercials and events highlighting his devotion to Akron, Ohio. He has hammered the point home that he never forgot where he came from and his return is all about giving back. It is bigger than basketball.

Well Nike's new ad may have outdone everything it has done for LeBron to this point. King James invites the entire city of Cleveland into his team huddle. Check out the ad below and prepare to get chills....

Kansas City Royals Going to The World Series

Your eyes are not deceiving you baseball fans! And no, it is not 1985. The 2014 Kansas City Royals are going to be representing the American League in the World Series. These aren't your father's Royals of George Brett (above), Brett Saberhagen, Hal McRae and Willie Wilson. This squad is filled with names like Eric Hosmer, Alex Gordon, Lorenzo Cain, and Mike Moustakas. If you said "Who?", then you can officially join the club. All joking aside, these are the best players you have never heard of... in the postseason. They have already set a Major League record by winning their first eight (8) postseason games (they are undefeated in the playoffs). Considering they had to win an extra wildcard playoff game to even punch their ticket to the tournament is even more impressive. They are the first team to make the postseason tallying the lowest amount of homeruns and walks as a team in the entire league during the regular season. They won three straight playoff games in extra innings and have been virtually unstoppable when carrying a lead into the 7th inning.

Kansas City put an end to the longest drought between playoff appearances this season and have not looked back. In case you were wondering, they are a combined 6-1 versus the two National League teams still fighting for the right to play them in the Fall Classic: The San Francisco Giants (3-0) and St. Louis Cardinals (3-1). If the Cardinals can fight back from a 3 games to 1 deficit they would earn a rematch from that 1985 series.

Brandy, MC Lyte, Yo-Yo, and Queen Latifah Re-Unite To Perform "I Wanna Be Down Remix" at BET Hip Hop Awards

Can you believe it has been 20 years since three legends of Hip Hop jumped on a remix for a then unknown R&B neophyte with a catchy debut single? MC Lyte, Yo-Yo, and Queen Latifah reunited on stage at the BET Hip Hop Awards with Brandy for the remix of her hit single "I Wanna Be Down". Set on a white backdrop, Brandy began her classic song and each female stepped out from what seemed like an invisible door to spit their respective verses. All the women look just as flawless as they did in the 1994 clip, the only difference being the video back then was shot in black and white. See the performance followed by the original video below.

KimYe Divorce?

I often wonder how do tabloid magazines like "InTouch Weekly" and "Us", to name two, get their stories? For instance the aforementioned "InTouch Weekly" has Kim Kardashian on the cover with the headline "Nasty $250 Million Divorce: The Fight To End All Fights". The pictures inside show a seemingly angry Kanye West looking at Kim as she exits a vehicle. Upon closer review it seems 'Ye is looking past Kim possibly at a photog. The magazines will spend weeks at a time devoted to the same stories, but for the most part never happen publicly. One example is the rumor that Beyonce was going to divorce Jay-Z after the finale of their joint "On The Run" tour. What happens? Bey-Z end up renewing their vows.

I hope Kim and Kanye work out whatever issues they have for the sake of their child.

Derek Jeter runs New York with a final walk-off

"Derek Jeter, where fantasy becomes reality! Did you have any doubt?"

Those were the words of New York Yankees announcer Michael Kay after a baseball player wearing a New York Yankees uniform named Antoan Richardson slid head first past home plate to give the Bronx Bombers a 6-5 win over the Baltimore Orioles at a raucous Yankee Stadium. Who drove in the winning run? Who else? To the surprise of no one team captain Derek Jeter, who happened to be playing his final home game as a member of the Yankees, closed the final chapter of his legendary career the way it began in the fall of 1996: with his two arms raised to the heavens, his teammates - virtual newcomers who were toddlers when Jeter rose to fame nearly 20 years ago - rushing towards him to hoist their Hall-of-Fame shortstop into the air one last time.

The man who was once called "Mr. November" back in 2001 came through with another timely hit in the best game that meant absolutely nothing in the grand scheme of things that I ever saw. I'm a Mets fan, but what can you say about a guy who has handled his celebrity so flawlessly on and off the field? I can't remember a superstar in any sport that never had a bad word, occurrence, or event reported about him. We all know the women he dated, a who's who of famous beautiful stars of fashion, film and music. Yet he never had a scandal, a controversial break up, or sour grapes of any kind from the women Jeter loved and let go.

Amazing.

But that is the essence of Derek Jeter. The personification of professionalism. The epitome of excellence and class. He never showed up a pitcher, never jogged to first base, never snapped in an interview. It's unbelievable. He was almost surreal. I'm not sure where Jeter will go from here, but I know one thing, it is going to be weird not seeing number 2 on the field between second and third base in April 2015.

It's been kind of a chilly summer. Like, the temperature has struggled to break the 90 degree mark. I for one expected a very hot summer being that the winter was so horrible. I can only attribute it to hell trying to fight off freezing over because George Clooney is actually going through with getting married.

Since Derek Jeter announced the 2014 season would be his last in the major leagues back in February many wondered if he would get the same treatment as fellow retired teammate Mariano Rivera. So far his farewell tour has been underwhelming compared to Mo's and that is how Jeter, never one to show emotion, probably likes it. Still you knew someone, somewhere was going to do something special for the Yankees captain. Leave it to one of his corporate sponsors to step up to the plate (see what I did there?) with an instant classic commercial that has everything from A-list celebrities like Michael Jordan, Spike Lee, Jay-Z, former mayor Rudy Giuliani, rival New York Mets players who wish to remain anonymous, to hated Boston Redsox fans begrudgingly tipping their cap to Jeter's legendary career. The Nike commercial will run during the Major League All Star Game right before Jeter's first at-bat.

Respect due.

Derek Jeter announces retirement

February 12th began as any other day, until a Facebook post by a certain legendary baseball player who happens to play shortstop for the world's most famous major league franchise became public. Wednesday February 12, 2014 will now forever be known as the day Derek Jeter announced that he was retiring from baseball after the 2014 season, his 20th.

Maybe I'm being too dramatic. Or maybe not when you consider that Jeter's "Core Four" brethren Mariano Rivera announced his intention to ride off into the sunset at the beginning of last season, turning the 2013 campaign into a season long stadium farewell tour of epic proportions. Also when you consider Jeter's impact on the game of baseball playing one of the most visible positions on the most celebrated, hated, and appreciated teams in the world, and doing it at a consistently elite level, winning four World Series titles in your first five full seasons for said team, you are a pretty big deal. When you consider that a generation of baseball fans only know Derek Jeter as their shortstop, his impact can't be overstated.

The announcement comes as a shock until you realize the year is 2014 and the man will turn 40, he hasn't been the same player since he broke his ankle doing exactly what he has been doing for two decades: ranging to his left to snag a ground ball, and he is the last man standing of all the players from this current Yankees dynasty that dates back to the mid 1990s. Bernie Williams, Andy Pettite, Jorge Posada, Tino Martinez, Paul O'Neil, Joe Torre are not walking through the clubhouse door anymore.

So when you look at it like that, I guess you can't fault a man as decorated as Jeter for calling it a career. Some players you just wish would play forever. The Captain is one of them.

The state of Hip Hop according to.... Trinidad James??

I don't understand why these less than talented (to put it kindly) rappers insist on going on a my city is better than your city rant OUTSIDE of their hometown. The latest brain surgeon to attempt career suicide is none other than Mr. "All Gold Everything" Trinidad James. This proponent of nonsensical rap decides to choose a stage in BROOKLYN of all places to claim that the "South runs NYC". Don't believe me? The proof is in the video...

Yeah, that happened. What was he thinking? I mean, clearly he wasn't. He could have at least chosen a better venue in another borough. The sad thing is, he had a point. The watered down material emanating from Hip Hop's birthplace in recent years has reminded me of the worst the states below the Mason Dixon line have to offer, but we don't want to hear that from someone that is not OutKast or T.I.

Smh. I'm surprised nothing more than boo birds rained down Mr. James. I'm sure his claims won't go unchallenged by somebody from New York. Too many rappers under that broad umbrella of generalization, Trinidad. That's when knowing how to clarify comes in handy.

He will learn.

Hello blogger family!

I know it has been a while since I have written my thoughts here. Well, the photo above is of yours truly. This is the reason I have been missing in action pretty much, but I have returned because I: a) miss you loyal readers b) updating my blog allows me to do some form of writing which is good for my own sanity and c) there is too much going on in the world not to keep the blog updated (not to mention having a working laptop helps...)!

So there.... with that being said I will attempt to maintain a consistent presence here from now on (I had a fight with a dirty thing called procrastination). For all of you who have been visiting my blog in my absence, thank you so much for stopping by. Your continued support is much appreciated as I have some new material in the works for the coming months to share.

I thank you for your patience as I look to expand the W.R.E.a.C Havoc brand. It is not a coincidence that I chose such a symbolic date to return. 11-12-13 happens only once every 100 years (don't worry I won't disappear until 12-13-14 next year) and one of my goals is to stand out in a similar fashion in media and entertainment. Like any great reward it is not attained without hard work and sacrifice.

I look forward to bringing you more of just my thoughts ladies and gentlemen! I realize I missed a lot of good stuff to comment on from our new mayor Bill de Blasio (so long Bloomberg), to the hazing scandal

5 Reasons The Knicks Shpould Have Kept Jeremy Lin

The Jeremy Lin era is officially over in New York. The Knicks were set to match his offer from the Houston Rockets, but an extra $5 million on the back end of the deal at the last minute allegedly angered Knicks brass. Still there is no doubt the impact Lin made in the biggest city is immeasurable, yet it wasn’t enough to keep him in the orange and blue. The New York Knicks are making a big mistake letting Lin walk especially when you are getting nothing in return for him. Here’s why:

5. Landry Fields

This is a moot point since Fields is on his way to Toronto, but it was clear who benefited the most from Jeremy Lin being on the floor. Fields took his face off the milk carton after Lin emerged, created a stupid pre-game handshake, and was by all accounts Lin’s best friend on the team. Once Lin got hurt and Carmelo came back Landry went back into the witness protection program, especially against Miami in the first round of the playoffs.

4. Merchandising
At the height of Jeremy Lin’s run his number 17 Knicks jersey was the best selling uniform in the ENTIRE league, better than Kobe, better than LeBron James. You can’t pay for that publicity. J-Lin appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated two weeks in a row. Some athletes don’t make the cover twice in their career. Playoffs tickets flew off the shelves before everyone knew Lin was hurt and would not be playing. Some say this was an underhanded ploy to guarantee post season tickets would be sold by Knicks owner James Dolan. My question is if you are going to pull a heist like that on the general public, why not keep the guy in the fold and continue to milk the cash cow? What does Carmelo Anthony‘s jersey rank on the best seller list? I don’t know either. Moving on…

3. Point Guard Play

Jason Kidd admitted he signed on to play with Lin. Even when Carmelo returned from injury Lin was averaging 17 points, 7 assists and 5 rebounds. Jason Kidd is not gonna give you those numbers on a regular basis anymore and it remains to be seen if Raymond Felton can play like he did at the start of the 2010-11 season without Mike D’Antoni‘s system.

2. Potential
Although it was only 25 starts, Jeremy Lin showed he had guts. He was fearless going to the basket. He obliterated stereotypes every time he finished a fast break with a one-handed flush. Sure he turned the ball over a little too much and his defense could have been better, but that’s why you allow the kid the chance to grow. Sure we know now he could have come back during the Miami playoff series and chose not to, and yeah he went back to the Rockets for more money after the Knicks said they would match the initial offer, but what else do you expect from a man who went to Harvard. He was using his noggin. He was sleeping on Landry Fields’ couch last season. Why not try to get as much money as you can to secure your future? The Knicks overpaid for Jerome James (who? Exactly), gave a $100 million contract to Allan Houston when he was clearly at the tail-end of a brilliant career, and threw away money on Eddy Curry. Now Dolan wants to exercise financial restraint on a kid who they pretty much discovered and made a global star? The Knicks can only hope Lin fades away in Houston. Then again, with his popularity I wouldn’t be surprised if Lin is the starting point guard for the Western Conference in the All-Star game next season (fans vote for the starters). Knicks would look real good then. Why not see what the kid can do in a full season with a training camp? Worry about that poison pill of a third year (14.9 million, $30-40 million after luxury tax) when the time comes. But that’s just me. I’m not a billionaire.

1. Lin-sanity
Jeremy Lin’s rise off the end of the bench brought an excitement the Garden hasn’t seen since Larry Johnson hit the four point play against the Indiana Pacers. All of a sudden Asian-Americans were all over the arena (or maybe the cameras were finding them more), the cardboard signs returned with every Lin-adjective imaginable (one lady asked Lin to sleep with her on a sign that did not make live television), and he was all over the airwaves and media. Magazines devoted entire issues to him, documentaries were made: this was a three week stretch of basketball! Keep Lin and getting tickets to Knicks game returns to the difficulty level of the Pat Riley coached mid 90′s crew. There’s your luxury tax money recouped in spades.

Seven Years Strong

Seven years ago this week I married my best friend in one of the most memorable wedding ceremonies I have ever experienced. My wife Tracy-Ann and I, after nine years of dating, took our vows in a gated, exclusive island resort in front of over 100 family and friends. What made our wedding memorable was not only was it a mini-reunion of sorts, but that it happened in the midst of a hurricane. A hurricane, named Emily, so fierce that it forced our outdoor event indoors.

Even though Mother Nature changed our plans, the main thing was that everyone there had a great time. Our bridal party was large, our guests, a mixture of both families at alternating tables all danced and laughed together during the reception, and those who made the trip to Jamaica from the U.S. enjoyed everything the Half Moon resort had to offer.

Although I did not completely realize it then, Tracy-Ann has indeed been my best friend throughout our relationship. She has been there for me through our many trials, tribulations, triumphs, and milestones. She has been my rock, through tragedy, disappointment, and discouraging times, as well as a voice of reason, unending support and praise during times of triumph and good fortune.

Being blessed with two beautiful children has strengthened our bond and the feeling that I made the right choice. It is said that after seven years all hardship should end. Here's to many more years of of love, understanding, passion and joy.

Reggie Miller Inducted Into Basketball Hall Of Fame

Congratulations to Reggie Miller. The former Indiana Pacers sharpshooter is among a class of 12 who are headed to the Hall of Fame this year. After being completely passed over last year in his first year of eligibility, Miller got the call. Reggie joins his sister Cheryl Miller, inducted in 1995 for her legendary college career at UCLA, as the only brother and sister to be in a Hall of Fame for any sport.

Even though Reggie had some of his best moments against my Knicks (25 points in 4th quarter in Game 5 of '94 ECF, 8 points in 8.9 seconds Game 1 '95 ECSF), the Hall is a well deserved honor.

John Calipari Finally Wins Title

John Calipari, the svengali of the one and done athletes that delay their move to the NBA due to mandatory age restrictions, has finally translated his superior recruiting skills into a national championship. It is Kentucky's 8th crown overall.

Calipari should arguably have two titles. in 2008 as coach of Memphis, Calipari's team, which included one and done Derrick Rose and Chris Douglas-Roberts saw a nine point lead disappear when Rose was unable to make freethrows down the stretch.

That was then, this is now. Calipari also took UMass and Marcus Camby to the brink in 1996. the man knows how to coach and am glad he finally won the big game.

Time to give him his due.

'Hunger Games' Success Marred By Racism

What should have been a celebrated, record-breaking opening weekend for the latest tween book-to-screen sensation 'The Hunger Games' was negated in my eyes by the continued ignorance of racism. I mean really, people, what year are we in?? Are we still going there??

What is very disturbing is that it is mostly young people making these disgusting comments. At the center of the controversy is the character 'Rue', who in the book is described as being dark skinned. What does that description mean? I think it means Black, maybe Native American... maybe.

So to the filmmakers charged with making the movie version remain as true to the book as possible, it would make sense to cast a Black girl in the role of the dark-skinned character, right??

Not to some of these ignoramuses. The comments made on Twitter.... (TWITTER!!) took me back to the history books and what I've read about slavery and the Civil Rights Era. It was a tournament he won six times before. But still the seventh time had to be the sweetest for Tiger Woods. Woods won the Arnold Palmer Classic at Bayhill going away for his first official PGA tour victory since he forgot how to drive away from his house in November of 2009.

He has come close leading going into the final round of three of his last four events, but finally got over the hump. With the Masters on the horizon has Tiger turned the corner?

Tim Tebow has landed in the Big Apple. For better or worse Tebowmania has arrived thanks to the same old Jets. The Jets management continue to insult the intelligence of the media and general public by sticking to the story that this signing was strictly a football move. We all know this is the same old Jets trying to steal the thunder of the New York Giants who are only the defending Super Bowl champions, who only go about their business quietly, who when their star receiver Plaxico Burress SHOT himself in a nightclub never got as much publicity as an organization as the hapless Jets.

Can you imagine if Santonio Holmes shot himself in the leg in a nightclub? The story would never go away. We would hear about his feud with STARTING quarterback Mark Sanchez, or some other frivolous gossip. The fact that there is a press conference to announce the signing of the BACKUP quarterback tells you what's going on in the Jets organization.

Giants owner John Mara had an excellent line when he said that he would hold a press conference for David Carr who just re-signed as Eli Manning's backup for the 2012 season.

It's ridiculous. Tebow is not coming to New York to ride the bench all season, not after the impact he had in Denver.

There will be no Rex Ryan or any of Tebow's Jets teammates present at this press conference, but the likes of CNN and FOX News have media trucks parked next to the ESPN trucks.
