The Harley Davidson Sportster model has been in production since 1957 and rose to fame in the US in 1968 due to its appearance in the TV series "Then Came Bronson".

The Sporster has been offered in many different models based on the following base models:

• Harley Davidson Sportster XL Ironhead, 1957-1985 and came with the 900cc & 1000cc Ironhead engine with cast iron heads
• Harley Davidon Sportster XL Evolution (EVO), 1986 to present had the option of 883cc, 1100cc and 1200cc Evolution engine with allow heads

The Harley Sportster gets its juice from the venerable V-Twin engine which was mounted directly to the frame until 2003 when Harley started using rubber isolation mounts to reduce the vibration transferred to the driver.  Some will say this took some of the "Harley Feel" from the bike.

It is notable to mention that Harley also made racing models of the Sportster.  Not is more famous then Evil Knievel's XR-750 Harley Davidson Sportster which was a racing bike modified for jumping.  One of Knievel's XR-750's is on display at the Smithsonian and worth the visit.

The Harley Davidson Softail is a classic in it's own right.  Harley coined the term Softail in 1984 with the release of the FXST.  The Harley Softail got its name due to the hidden rear suspension that give a smoother ride with the look of a rigid frame.

If you are not mechanically inclined be sure to get an opinion of your mechanic friend before making a purchase. Buying online can be tricky. Most reputable online businesses will provide some sort of DOA warranty and return policy. Purchasing direct from an individual such as eBay or kijiji is usually buyer beware, purchase as is, no returns. This is when an expert opinion and knowing exactly what used motorcycle parts you need comes in handy. Service manuals are a great asset to help you find the exact part you need as well.

In this day and age of high unstable fuel costs, the motorcycle has made a strong resurgence due in part to its 40 to 60 miles per gallon. When properly maintained, a motorcycle engine is very efficient and lets face it... a lot cooler to drive then a sub compact car.

Buying a rebuildable motorcycle is a great way to save money. Motorcycle repair, too, can come in handy. Do you have a bike in storage that you haven't dusted off for awhile? There's a good chance you can be among those restoring motorcycles so that you can ride your old road hog again. Here are a few basic steps to get your bike going:

Check Fuel
Drain the old fuel completely from the system and put in fresh gas before your turn the engine, especially if it the motorcycle has been sitting for a long period of time and did not have fuel stabilizer added before storage. Better to be safe then sorry.

Engine Oil
Replace engine oil and filter. Inspect the old oil and filter for any residue or metal shavings that would indicate internal engine problems.

Check the Battery
Make sure leads are not corroded and that the battery will fully charge and then hold a charge and replace if necessary.  Again for the price of a new battery, replace it if it's questionable.

Inspect The Chain
The chain is what transfers power from the engine to the rear wheel and is thus one of the most if not the most important wear item you need to inspect to ensure your safety.  Verify the chain tension and alignment as well as sprocket wear. Replace where needed and keep chain properly lubricated with manufacturer recommended lubricants and procedure.

Fluid Levels
Brake, clutch and coolant levels should be checked as necessary. Make sure you replace missing brake fluid with a new container of the same brand you used last time. Let your bike idle for a few minutes before you take off so that all fluids circulate properly.

Tires and Suspension
Inspect everything thoroughly before you take your first ride. If you kept your bike stored upright on a kickstand, make sure your tires aren't cracked, marked, or flat. In addition, check to make sure tire wear and air levels are good.

The above notes are a few suggestions to get your restored motorcycle going and in running order again.  Always consult a professional mechanic to ensure your bike is safe and road worthy before taking it on the open road.
