John Scofield’s guitar work has influenced jazz since the late 70’s and is going strong today. Possessor of a very distinctive sound and stylistic diversity, Scofield is a masterful jazz improviser whose music generally falls somewhere between post-bop, funk edged jazz, and R & B.  He has recorded over 30 albums as a leader (many already classics) including collaborations with contemporary favorites Bill Frisell, Joe Lovano and Phil Lesh. He’s also played and recorded with Tony Williams, Jim Hall, Ron Carter, and Herbie Hancock among many jazz legends.  Now an adjunct professor of music at New York University, John Scofield has a wealth of knowledge to pass on to the next generation, and any up-and-coming musicians should not miss out on this great opportunity to hear from a pro.

Michael Daigeau is an extraordinary musician, and one of the most sought-after horn players out there. He has played with just about every big name in music, including Doc Severinson, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Dizzy Gillespie, Tina Turner, Neil Diamond, Phil Collins, The Temptations, Gladys Knight, Chaka Kahn and Stevie Wonder, Tupac, Ashanti, and countless other bands and orchestra’s. Wreckhouse Jazz and Blues is absolutely thrilled to be able to welcome living legend John Scofield to St. John’s this summer for the 2013 Wreckhouse International Jazz and Blues Festival.

John Scofield’s guitar work has influenced jazz since the late 70’s and is going strong today. Possessor of a very distinctive sound and stylistic diversity, Scofield is a masterful jazz improviser whose music generally falls somewhere between post-bop, funk edged jazz, and R & B.

Born in Ohio and raised in suburban Connecticut, Scofield took up the guitar at age 11, inspired by both rock and blues players. He attended Berklee College of Music in Boston. He began his international career as a bandleader and recording artist in 1978. From 1982-1985, Scofield toured and recorded with Miles Davis. His Davis stint placed him firmly in the foreground of jazz consciousness as a player and composer.

Since that time he has prominently led his own groups in the international Jazz scene, recorded over 30 albums as a leader (many already classics) including collaborations with contemporary favorites Bill Frisell, Joe Lovano and Phil Lesh. He’s played and recorded with Tony Williams, Jim Hall, Ron Carter, and Herbie Hancock among many jazz legends. Throughout his career Scofield has punctuated his traditional jazz offerings with funk-oriented electric music. All along, the guitarist has kept an open musical mind.

Touring the world approximately 200 days per year with his own groups, he is an Adjunct Professor of Music at New York University, a husband and father of two. John has recently released two new albums, “This Meets That” and “That’s What I Say.”

This year’s the festival is going to feature some fantastic talent such as 8 Ball Aitken, the Mike Murley Septet, Roberto Lopez and the Afro-Colombian Jazz Orchestra, and none other than the legendary John Scofield. This year is shaping up to be one of the best yet, but we need the help of our amazing team of volunteers. Volunteers are the backbone of Wreckhouse Jazz and Blues. Volunteering is a great experience, you get to meet lots of fellow jazz enthusiasts, make some great connections, and take in some of the best concerts in St. John’s this summer, for free! A’Court’s first studio recording in six years, Triumph & Disaster is produced by Chris Kirby. The album features 13 brand new original songs from Charlie A’Court and an impressive line up of co-writers including Ron Hynes, Kim Wempe, Jamie Robinson, Jason Mingo, Dave Simpsom and Chris Kirby, along with a brilliant cover of Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come”.

”The album title is a tip of the hat to the late, British author, Rudyard Kipling and his acclaimed poem, IF”, says A’Court, “The excerpt reads – If you can meet with Triumph & Disaster and treat those two impostors just the same – the line refers to a balance between high and low emotions.” A’Court plays with a delicate balance of emotion touching on feelings of jubilation, redemption, isolation and absolute love for another.

The Volunteer Rally will take place from 5:00 to 6:30 pm at the Eastern Edge Art Gallery on, Wednesday, June 20th. Eastern Edge is located at 72 Harbour Drive, and has played host to many volunteer parties in the past.

At the rally there will be sign-up sheets for the volunteer positions at each of the concerts scheduled as well as the logistics transportation team and festival headquarters crew. It’s first come, first serve, and the positions will likely fill up quick!
