Just finished publishing Over the Edge on Kindle Direct Publishing. It should be available sometime tomorrow. I will definitely let everyone know.

All in all, the process of publishing on Kindle took about an hour using Mobicreator and uploading everything to the Kindle Direct account.

Day 28 - Over the Edge Published! Order and Advance Copy!

Finally finished. I just wanted to let everyone know how hard it is to publish your own book. Let's see, it took 21 days to typeset Over the Edge (adding and changing things as I typed), it took 2 days to design the cover, it took 4 days to edit and proof the book, and it took ONE day to publish it. So, why is it that publishers charge you so much to publish your book. YOU DO ALL OF THE WORK! Most of the work is in the writing. The least of the work is in the publishing. So, before you start looking for a publisher, ask yourself "Can I do all of this myself?" You'd be surprised at what you are actually able to do when you put your mind to it.

Anyway, Over the Edge is published. I have ordered my first "proof copy" of my book and must make sure it is error free before releasing it to the public. Day 27 - Complete!

Wow, busy day, but what else better to do on a Sunday. I finished editing Over the Edge (11 chapters total - combined one chapter into another, so now there are only 27 chapters). Moved on to the formatting stage.

I experimented with different fonts for my book. Not sure I like the one I picked now that I converted it to a PDF. May have to modify that a bit. Just don't like Times New Roman though. I like Veranda while it was in MS Word, but in PDF it just didn't look right. I think I will just rest for the night and look at it tomorrow. If it looks good with fresh eyes it will be published tomorrow. Then I have to purchase the proof. I will let everyone know when it is released for purchase.

Day 26 - Edited Chapters 12 - 16

Knocked out 5 chapters today. Though it was three but really pushed through them. Should finish up tomorrow...then it's on to formatting and publishing. Not much longer.

Day 25 - Done with Chapters 5 through 11

Lots of good editing and proofreading tonight. Got chapters 5 through 11 finished. I can't believe how much I've added and corrected since I started. Over 3,000 more words added. Will hopefully be done with the whole book in a couple of days, ready to publish. Can't wait.

Day 24 - Edited Chapters 2 through 4

Didn't get to do any editing yesterday, but made it through 3 chapters today. Chapters 2 through 4 are proofread and edited. While I've been editing each chapter, I've been adding them to my final format version of my book. Today I formatted my book into the proper size. I have put it in the Standard Book Format that will be ready to publish as soon as I am done with my proofreading and editing. All I will have to do after I complete editing the book and adding it to the final is to publish it as a PDF and upload it to Lulu.com. Then I will have to purchase a proof to make sure everything looks the way it should before I open it up to sell. Almost there.

Day 23 - Proofread and Edited Chapter 1

Wow, can't believe how long chapter 1 was. Seemed to take forever to proofread and edit it.

I am self-editing my work. When I typed it out in Microsoft Word 2007, I single spaced it in Courier New 12 font. For editing, I adjusted the entire manuscript to double space with the same font size. I am taking my time reading each sentence, making sure it makes sense as I read it, checking spelling, and checking definitions, context, and synonyms.

Also finished my back cover today. Need to add a review under the title, but other than that, not bad for a days work. Will hopefully get some editing done tomorrow, but have a long day of work coming up so I may not get a chance. We'll see.

Day 22 - Took a Celebratory Day Off

Took a celebratory day off today. Also, to clear my mind of my book for a good 24 hours before I begin my editing and proofreading stage. This is much quicker process than actually typing it out, though it can take up some time as I begin adding to it, taking some away, making it better, making it flow more smoothly, and correct minor problems here and there.

I will keep everyone up to date with what's going on with the progress. I should be ready to format my book to get ready for publishing at Lulu.com. Can't wait to get it published...goal is 20 days before Christmas!

Cover Revised

Revised the cover based on a scene from the book. Thought it was more exciting. The other looked too much like a documentary while this novel is about action, adventure, and suspense.

Day 21....Chapters 22 through 28 - Initial Draft Complete!

Day 21, very productive day. Completed chapters 22 through 28, completing the typesetting part of my job. Initial draft done. Now on to the final edit. Working on revising the cover a little bit. A scene from the book inspired me to make it stormy instead of clear and plane. Will definitely be published in plenty of time to receive your copy for Christmas.

Day 20 - Chapter 21 Done - HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Day 19 - Two more Chapters Written

Completed two long chapters today. Chapters 19 and 20 done. Derek and his friends are on the run again. A large search party is moving toward them - tracking dogs, an Indian tracker, and thirty volunteers are all teamed together with the FBI to track the three fugitives down.

Day 18 - Three More Chapters Done!

I'm definitely moving now. Three more chapters done today. Chapters 16 through 18 are complete. These chapters were basically winter in the wilderness, describing things that happened and such. Not much of a search going on yet because of the snow hindering efforts. But now that the snow has pretty much melted, the search is about to start up again.

Day 17...Knocked out Four Chapters Today!

Great writing day today. My goal is to write one chapter of Over the Edge every day. I knocked out four chapters today. Chapters 12 - 15 are done. Had to do a lot of research on Hungry Horse Reservoir area as this is where Derek is hiding out. It's fiction but I want it as realistic as possible. Now Derek's best friend Jeremy and fiance Susan have joined him, not exactly by choice. The authorities found the two dead hunters and link them to Derek. The heat is on. Winter is approaching rapidly.

Day 16...Chapter 11 - Back at it, Finally!

Wow, it's been a seriously long time since I have written in my book Over the Edge. I've been terribly busy this summer forcing me to stopped writing and concentrating on my websites. During that time, I created two niche websites and did two major revisions to my larger websites. I just got done with Write and Publish Fiction - lots of work with that one. Cleaned it up a bit as well as redesigned it a bit.

Anyway, now I have time to write again before my next major website work. I must finish this book before Christmas at which time I can work on my website - launching a new product and need some time to do that. It's my first major launch - almost done putting everything together for that. But first things first. Over the Edge must be finished with my first draft by the 6th of December.

Chapter 11 was pretty slow. The police are looking for the two missing hunters and Jeremy decides to fly out to Montana again to talk to Derek.

Writer's Journal - Day 14 and Day 15 - Chapter 10 Done

Writer's Journal - Days 14 and 15.

What an exciting chapter to write. This was the turning point in the story - one of the most exciting chapters so far. Chapter 10 is done in two days. Had to work this weekend (at my job) so not as much writing as I would have liked.

Make sure if you are writing to back it up on an external drive (thumb drive, external hard drive, or other storage device NOT on your computer). It's very easy to lose everything that you wrote. It is near impossible to recreate it to the same consistency. Don't lose your work. Back it up frequently.

Writer's Journal - Day 11, 12 and 13 - Chapter 9 Written

Writer's Journal - Days 11, 12 and 13. This has been a long and drawn out chapter. I wrote the entire chapter from scratch to make the investigation side and Jeremy's Captain's Mast more interesting. I think I'm back on track now. Hopefully no more impromptu writing in this book, although it was rather fun to write two new chapters in the book.

Did a lot of research on the Uniform Code of Military Justice and found an awesome reference online.

Fiction writing, even though it's fiction, requires a lot of research to ensure it seems as realistic as possible. I want this story to be as realistic as possible to add excitement and suspense.

Writer's Journal - Day 10 - Chapter 8 Complete

Writer's Journal, Day 10. Chapter 8 is complete.

My book just got a little longer. I completely wrote a whole new chapter in the book. NCIS is investigating Derek's disappearance and things are heating up for Jeremy. The original path for my book just wasn't cutting it. I had to add more about the investigation just to make the story flow better.

Will try to get caught back up with my original chapters and blend it all together tomorrow.

Writer's Journal - Day 8 and 9 - Chapter 7 Complete

Writer's Journal days 8 and 9. I took off for Easter - Happy Easter to everyone by the way. Got back down to it today and completed Chapter 7. Derek never returned from leave and he has been marked as unauthorized absence (UA). They as Jeremy if he had seen him and also called his family. No one knows anything.

The chapter continues by describing Derek's daily routine - how he lives and how he keeps from getting bored.

The next couple of chapters are where things get more exciting.

Had to visit Google.com today and research a couple things. Search Engines make research so much easier. When I first wrote the book, there was no Internet or Search Engines, well, none that I was connected to.

Writer's Journal - Day 7 - Two Chapters Complete

Writer's Journal, day 7. Finished chapters 5 and 6 today, making up for yesterday.

Well, Derek made a final attempt to get Susan to marry him but failed, so he made up his mind to follow his dreams of living a free life away from it all. Jeremy goes back to the boat early and Derek leaves for the national forest near Hungry Horse Reservoir. He is finally making his dream come true. He does arrange to have Susan meet him once a month to bring him requested supplies to help him out.

Had no issues writing these two chapters. Just simple typesetting and some minor editing. The next two chapters will be a little different than originally written. Going to put chapter 8 in place of 7 and vice versa. Had to mix it around a bit to keep the plot moving.

Writer's Journal - Day 5 - Chapter 4 Done!

Writer's Journal Day 4.

Wow, that was a lot of typing. Eleven pages single spaced all together to complete chapter 4.

Ran into a little problem at the beginning of the chapter. I seemed to have misplaced four pages of my manuscript. Got a little worried there, but dug through my paper archives and found another copy of the manuscript. It was an older version that I hadn't marked up yet, but had the four pages I was looking for. That would have been tough to recall all of that writing.

This is why it is important to complete your entire book, make back up copies all of the time through out the process of writing, and not destroy your original manuscript. I think I may have shredded the first four pages of chapter 4 right along with the ones I shredded from chapter 3.
