The following ten guidelines for writing articles are meant specifically for articles that are used to promote a website or blog. These are typically distributed through directories where readers can access them and other webmasters can take them for free to use as content on their websites. It is one of the best ways to optimize and promote your site or blog.

1. Have an Optimized and Interesting Title

The title should catch the attention of readers. It doesn't have to be unusual or outrageous, although that can help when it is possible. But it should tell the reader what the article is about. To be optimized for search engines it also needs to contain the primary keyword that you are targeting, which leads us to our second guideline.

2. Target One Primary Keyword

In my experience (well over a thousand articles and thousands of web pages), it isn't worth trying to get traffic for more than one keyword phrase per article. You will use related ones in any case. For example, how do you write about "online articles" without mentioning the keywords "articles" and "writing" a few times? Focus on one for best results.

3. Tell the Reader What to Expect

Most directories require a one or two sentence description. Include the primary keyword in this and tell potential readers what they'll find - why they should read the article. Keep it short so it doesn't have to be edited for some directories that only allow a line or two.

4. Have Interesting, Entertaining or Useful Content

If you can have all three it's even better. A good rule of thumb for purely informational articles is to try to have one or two things that the average reader probably hasn't read elsewhere, or at least present the information from a new perspective.

5. Have an Easy, Optimized Article Body

The article should be between about 400 and 800 words to meet the requirements of most directories. Short paragraphs are easier on the eyes. You can break some articles up with headings or a list to make them more attractive to readers. To properly optimize it, so it can be found in the search engines, include the primary keyword a couple times in the body, in a heading if you have one, and in the final paragraph.

6. Sell Your Site

This is perhaps the most important of these guidelines. When writing articles you can't promote your website or products in the article itself or directories will not take it. Promotion is done in the "about the author" or "author's resource box" that immediately follows the article. You can say something about yourself if you wish, but I have found that it is better to just include your name and then focus on giving the reader a reason to click the link to your website. A free course, newsletter, ebook or other ethical bribe can help a lot with this.

7. Link Properly

Test your link to be sure that it is working. Consider where it should go as well. Much of the time that will be your homepage, but not always. For example, if you wrote about hiring a home inspector, a link to a page with a home inspection checklist might get more clicks - as long as you tell them that's what they'll get. You can also optimize your site better if you link specific keywords to it. If you are allowed two links in a given directory, you may want to link a keyword and then also link your URL.

8. Use The Tools The Directories Have

Directories are not all the same, and some have special tools you can use. Start by picking the right category for your article, of course. If the directory has an "author profile" page you should fill in the information and upload a photo if possible. Some readers will check that page for other articles if they liked the first one they read. Use any other promotional tools provided.

9. Keep Your Articles Organized

Over time, you will find new places to submit articles, and you need to keep track of which articles have gone to which directories. Number them from the start, and note the number of each one you where you have an article. In this way you can go back periodically and submit old articles to new directories on your list to get additional exposure. You may also want to organize your articles in other ways, such as by the sites they promote or the date written.

10. Learn To Write Efficiently

Rushing doesn't help, but efficiency does mean making more money in the long run. Star by having a system for writing and submitting. Then learn the article formats that are easiest and still of value to readers. These include ""top ten" and "list" articles, as well as "question and answer" articles.

Follow these ten guidlines for writing articles and you'll be doing better than most of the internet marketers out there.

This subtopic in particular "Article Structure" is bold and underline to call your attention. It means that it is a important one. Notice also that the first letter in each word is capitalized. That makes easy to read. Now imagine that you read an article that has no spaces between subtopics and does not have anything bold or underline to call attention. That article would just be a "bunch of letters". When someone sees an article like that they get discouraged and might leave and read another article.

I've been doing a lot of reading lately about Private Label Rights (PLR) content. I used to think that it was only for lazy people who didn't want to do their own writing. But as I learn more, I've come up with lots of great ways I can use PLR in my own business.

If you don't know what I'm talking about, PLR is content that you get from the original author along with their permission to use it as your own. So you can get a great report, put your name on it and have your own product to sell or give away!

The first couple of products I created using PLR only took me about half an hour. There have been a few sales so far from them so that was definitely time well spent.

When searching for PLR content to use, I found there were a lot of different types of sites available. Some offered monthly memberships and others offered just one time purchases. So be sure to look around before you decide where to buy.

The other night I was watching The Big Idea With Donny Deutsch and he had on some fascinating guests- teenage millionaires. Their stories were truly inspiring. What struck me most was that I noticed some common themes that were easy to understand that everyone can use to achieve more success with ebooks or any business. And, if an 8 year old can implement so can you!

But, before I relay their stories I want to point out that all of them were boys and I think that really says something about the way boys and girls are socialized in this country. I think it’s important to figure out why boys are getting it and girls aren’t and start finding a way to include the girls too!

But here are the 5 lessons:

Number 1. They were highly motivated. They had some deep desire that drove them to pursue making money. In one case the boy’s family was very poor and the mother was very ill. He had very few resources or role models but it didn’t stop him from becoming a millionaire! He just knew that he had to help his mother.

In another case, the boy started his first business at the ripe old age of 8! And by high school he was making $50,000 a year. What motivated him was the realization that by creating an income for himself he would be independent even though he was just a kid. His conviction crystallized when he decided that he wanted to come home from the boarding school that he had been sent to. When he told his dad that he had had enough and wanted to come home, his dad said “if you pay me back the tuition you can come home”. (The tuition was $25,000) so his son paid him the tuition and went home! He understood the freedom that making money would give him.

In a third case, the boy, Tony Hawk, was a passionate skateboarder who turned his passion into a multi-million dollar business with endorsement deals and even a theme park ride! He saw opportunity where others didn’t and he hung in there even during the leaner years. But ultimately, his vision and his passion carried him to millions.

Number 2. They started small but they took action. All of the boys started small and grew their fortunes. But, they didn’t get any money from their parents. They were resourceful and found ways to turn their dreams into reality on their own. How many times have you heard people say “if I only had the money I would do X”? They didn’t have ANY money and they did it anyway!

In one case, the boy seized on the popularity of Beanie Babies and got his sister to sell him hers for $100. He then turned around and sold them for $1000 on eBay! Then he became a distributor for the company by contacting them and ASKING for what he wanted-more Beanie Babies to sell. That took chutzpah! He was under-aged and normally a company would never give a child a distributorship but because his parents had helped him get a business credit card-and because they didn’t ask him his age, he was given the distributorship!

The boy who came from a poor family who’s mother was ill -get this- PAINTED ROCKS and sold them! I can’t even fathom to this day who would want to buy them, but that’s how he started!

And in the third case, skate-boarding legend, Tony Hawks was just doing what he loved and over time it morphed from a hobby to a multi-million dollar business.

Number 3. They had a “can do” attitude. It didn’t occur to them that they couldn’t accomplish what they set out to do! They just did it and expected it to work out. That doesn’t mean it was always easy or that they didn’t come up against real challenges, but they were able to stick to it and overcome adversity.

Number 4. They looked for opportunities to make money. What you focus on expands. So if you want more money think about ways that you can create more cash flow. When you ask the universe “how can I make more money?” on a regular basis, answers will come to you. It just takes learning to look at things in a new way. I know this from experience.

Number 5. They thought outside the box. They not only looked for opportunities but they saw them in places that other people didn’t see and seized them.

So to recap, if you want to be a millionaire, you have to think like one so find a big enough why, start small but take action, have a “can do” attitude, look for opportunities to make money, and think outside the box.
