Road to Rejection: A Common Mistake of Many Writers.

A common mistake of many beginning or aspiring writers is using too many words. While it may seem advantageous to paint a picture for your readers; using wordy descriptions isn't the way to do it. Writers should strive to get their point across in as few words as possible.

Ernest Hemingway said:

"My aim is to put down what I see and what I feel in the best and simplest way I can tell it."

Ernest Hemingway's reference to telling things the "simplest way" should not be confused with talking down to your reader. Simply put, we should tell our readers in a way they will easily relate to and understand. How can we do this? The best way is through showing our readers, not telling them.

For example, let's say our character really wants a bagel and coffee from her favorite bakery before heading to work, but they are really busy and the line is long. In our example, let's assume our goal is to get this information across to our reader, along with our character's irritation and final decision to stay despite being late for work.

The following paragraph is an example of "telling" our reader what we want them to know:

Leslie walked into the bakery. She was already late for work. There was a long line. This made Leslie irritated and she almost left. She wanted a bagel and a coffee so bad though, that she decided to stay, even if it made her late for work. "Why can't they just hurry up?" she thought.

This next paragraph is an example of "showing" our reader this same information:

Rushing through the bakery door, Leslie nearly slammed in to the last person in line it was so long. Biting her nails and tapping her foot rapidly, Leslie debated leaving. Mmmm. The smell of poppy seed bagels and fresh brewed coffee sealed her fate; she would be late to work again today.

As you can see, the 2nd example is more effective, as well as attention grabbing. Showing our reader provokes feeling, paints a picture and places our reader in the setting with our character. Showing fosters our reader's imagination. If we tell our reader what to think and how to perceive each situation; what is left for our reader to imagine? Without imagination, our reader can't place himself in the situations with our characters; and this makes for a very boring read.

Spend some time practicing showing, not telling. Pull out some of your old writings and rewrite them with a goal of showing your reader in any of the places you've told your reader what to think or feel. This could make such a big difference; you just might end up with a few "like new" articles to submit for publication! And, wouldn't that be great?

Hello Member of the Creative Multiplicity Writer's Group! I know we are a small group to start (3 of us), but that will be changing very soon!

Note: If you are not a member and would like to join, please send me a message and let me know! Include your email address so that I can send you the link to join! We'd love to have you! (You can send me an email by clicking on the link at the left that says "view my complete profile"; once in my profile, click on "email".)

I have another group I am getting ready to close with the implementation of my new writer's website (in 3 - 5 days!), and the members of that writing group will be coming over here with us!

In the meantime, we can go ahead and get the ball rolling!

Please take a moment and introduce yourself by starting a new thread in this post. Include your name (or what you'd like to be known as here at the Creative Multiplicity Writer's Group) in the title field of the post.

In your post, share a little about who you are with us and what type of experience you have with writing (hobby, journaling, freelance, etc.). Don't be shy if you're just getting started! Everyone has some experience even if it's just everyday-type correspondence; so don't sell yourself short!

Please also share why you are interested in writing (or why you decided to join the group), as well as what you hope to get out of the CMWG (Creative Multiplicity Writer's Group). This last part is important; as it will help me shape the types of resources and information I share with the group.

I want to make sure we cover everyone's interests! And, most importantly, I aspire to effectively aid each of you in reaching your professional and personal goals, as a writer.

Life goes on. Everything happens for a reason. Time heals all wounds. Cherish the time you did have together. This too shall pass. . .

. . . probably the last words you would want to hear, no matter how well intentioned, after just having lost a close friend or loved one.

Grief is a very personal and private thing, as anyone who has experienced it knows. And, the truth is, well-wishers know this too! But, because they care about you and truly want to help, they do their best to be there for you in your hour of need. The problem is it’s hard to know just what is best in these types of situations.

We, as humans, feel compelled to talk, to say something. Words, after all, are our primary form of communication. And, it’s hard for us to see a friend or loved one sad and hurting! Our natural instinct is to try to cheer them up. However, immediately following the loss of a loved one is not the best or most appropriate time to do this.

Grieving is a normal, healthy and necessary part of the loss process and people suffering loss need to be allowed this process in order to begin healing and to move on in a palliative, restorative manner.

So, when you find yourself in a time of grieving, and someone says something to you like, “This too shall pass”… take a deep breath, close your eyes and try to look past their words, into their heart, and remember that they genuinely are trying to help.

From the other side . . . the next time you are in the position of “well-wisher”, try just hugging your mournful loved one or simply sit with them and hold their hand. Actions really do speak louder than words.

Please help test this out, as I have had a few people say they couldn't get access to the full blog entry through their feed. I believe this is fixed now, but would appreciate you all testing this out and letting me know what, if any, problems you have!

If you are familiar with my writing, my bio and interests, or are coming here from another blog of mine, then you probably already know that I am a Mom (first & foremost!), a Freelance Writer, a Writing Coach, and have a strong desire to help other writers succeed both professionally and personally!

What you may not know about me though: I am a full-time WAHM (Work-At-Home-Mom); and my desire and skills have also allowed me to help other moms and budding entreperneurs, regardless of their niche, on their journey to attaining professional & personal success.

I have been very fortunate in my journey to find so many other moms & entrepreneurs along the way willing & dedicated to helping moms and others like me (and you!) succeed! It is an honor to now be included among those helping others.

I'm looking foward to meeting other writers, moms, and anyone looking to grow personally and in their selected industry. I am honored to be able to share some of my life with you , as a mom and professional; and I feel priviliged to be able to network with, hear from & learn from all of you!
