Writing Tips: Finding Newsworthy Topics for Any Examiner Title

2014-02-15T18:32:00.000-05:00

Photo by moppet65535 When publishing on Examiner, writers can get a boost in page views by getting articles approved as newsworthy. Not all articles approved as such will get into the search engine news feeds, but just getting the newsworthy designation on Examiner will improve credentials. As the dashboard meter climbs, it

Tips for Examiner Writers: Finding Article Ideas

2014-02-15T11:57:00.000-05:00

(Photo by Ed Yourdon) (These tips will be helpful to all article writers, not just those who publish on Examiner) Keeping your Examiner title(s) updated with fresh content will give a boost to the rest of your portfolio within that title, but as with any other form of writing, ideas can dry up from time to time. You can get ahead of

Why I hesitated to publish on Bubblews

2013-05-26T14:15:00.000-04:00

Photo by Laurence Simon I've been seeing my friends post on Facebook and other social networking sites about this new place to write - Bubblews - and after a cursory glance, decided it wasn't for me. Lots of folks are publishing nonsensical junk, much of it in broken (if even that) English, and I didn't want my name hitched to that wagon. After hearing again and again that my

Tracking Adsense Click Information on Your Blogs

2013-05-17T08:31:00.000-04:00

If your blogs or other websites are monetized with AdSense ads, you probably like to monitor how many clicks you get throughout the day. The more information you have about which blogs and individual posts are getting clicks, and which ad types on those blog posts are drawing the most attention, the better you can plan a strategy for future posts and ad placement. But what if you

How to Use Pinterest to Promote Your Business

2013-05-06T08:24:00.000-04:00

Putting your work on Pinterest is a great way to get it in front of large groups of people you might not otherwise have access to. Every time someone repins a pin, the reach gets wider, and there's no limit to how far it can go. But how do you utilize Pinterest to the maximum advantage? We're all visual creatures, so having a great photo to pin with your work is key, whether it

Are Challenges Good for Everyone?

2013-03-22T08:55:00.001-04:00

Photo by Ed Yourdan Challenges can be motivating, but they can also be a detriment if you take on more than you should. Are you guilty of the latter? Meeting a goal is a big deal, but if the carrot dangling in front of you isn't worth the effort expended, why are you doing it? If your goal is health and fitness, any step in the right direction is worth it, but don't set

The AtoZ Challenge Can Benefit All Writers, Not Just Bloggers

2013-03-08T08:27:00.000-05:00

(Photo by Muffet) The AtoZ Blogging Challenge is set to kick off again on April 1, 2103 as a way to get bloggers everywhere thinking outside of the box by posting every day of the month (except Sunday) on a topic that corresponds with the letter of the day. The challenge can take up a lot of time and you'll have to determine if it's worth it to you, but what if you're a writer, but not

Is the AtoZ Challenge Worth Your Time as a Blogger?

2013-03-06T11:47:00.000-05:00

If you've been blogging for any time at all, no doubt you've heard of the annual AtoZ Blogging Challenge that goes on every April, with the 2013 challenge starting on Monday, April 1. The idea is to make a blog post every day (except Sunday), crafting your post on a topic that corresponds with the letter of the day. It's a lot of work and can also be fun, but is it worth it for the

So You Want to Write Children's Books

If you're a writer, you're probably no different than the rest of us and have thought about taking your keyboard off into different directions. Article writing might pay the bills, but perhaps you've always thought about delving into fiction, or if you're already a fiction writer, you might have wanted to switch gears and try a different genre. Have any of us NOT thought we'd be

On Writing Fiction

2012-06-23T21:01:00.000-04:00

I've been writing articles for internet publication for a while now, but have recently been toying with the idea of dabbling in fiction. I read a lot of fiction, but haven't the foggiest idea how to go about writing it, so decided I'd best start off with some basics before I get too ahead of myself. While searching for some tools on how to write fiction, I came across this great deal on

How to Choose a Pen Name

2012-05-29T13:13:00.000-04:00

In a previous post, I mentioned a few reasons why writing under a pseudonym might be a better option than using your real name. But how do you choose a pen name? I'm toying with the idea of dipping my pen into a different color of ink to write fiction - perhaps flash fiction or short stories - but don't want to mix my article writing with other forms. Writing fiction under the

Quality or Quantity?

2012-04-19T08:31:00.000-04:00

If you're writing to make a buck, it makes sense to write a lot to get your content out there. Bloggers don't make money unless they post regularly. Article writers need to keep pumping them out in order to keep the cash flowing in. Whatever you publish online, it will produce better returns in search engine ranking if it is fresh. Nothing new there, so you keep

Inclement Weather Plan

2012-04-10T09:39:00.000-04:00

Are you scratching your head, wondering what the title of this post has to do with writing? Good. Keep reading; I promise it fits. While serving in the military for more than 21 years, I was involved in my fair share of parades and ceremonies for various events, all of which took time and effort to plan well before execution. That effort would be wasted if weather turned foul

Is There an Echo in Here?

2012-04-05T13:59:00.000-04:00

As writers, you probably do your fair share of reading daily - from Google Trends, to online news sources - even favorite blogs. That reading undoubtedly triggers ideas to write about, but be careful that the basic idea is as far as it goes. When outlining your article, refer to reputable sources with appropriate link-backs, but beyond direct quotes, make sure that the text of the piece

Divide and Conquer

2012-04-05T10:54:00.000-04:00

If you're a blogger or article writer, you're at the mercy of search engines to crawl your material to be indexed so that it will be seen. If you're in it for the money and page views, a niche blog is best, but even with that, writing about general topics within that category won't get you far. The trick is to make each post or article be as tightly focused as you can make it, else

Cantankerous Cranky Pants

2012-04-03T11:53:00.000-04:00

Do you let your mood spill over into your writing, or when dealing with clients? That wouldn't be a bad thing if you're in a pleasant mood, but it could be disastrous if your mood is more foul. (Photo by imru2b12) If you wake up on the wrong side of the bed, it might be better to get the kinks worked out before dealing with the public, or penning something that you might regret later.

Is Your Work More Babbling Than Writing?

2012-04-02T08:15:00.000-04:00

My Catholic upbringing taught me that the word babble had biblical origins, referencing the Tower of Babel, where men found themselves suddenly speaking in different tongues and not able to communicate with each other. Researching for this post, however, I was unable to find any reputable source to confirm that. While the origin of babbling is somewhat of a mystery, it still means

From A to Cra-Z

2012-04-01T09:11:00.000-04:00

The gauntlet has been thrown. I was on the fence about participating in the A-Z Blogging Challenge this year and even up until this morning as I was getting out of bed, I was still waffling. Enter my friend Angie, who entered two of her blogs and challenged me to do the same. So here I am, the morning of April 1, 2012, the first day of the challenge, and I haven't a clue what I'm going

Verses vs Versus

2012-03-09T12:40:00.000-05:00

During recent internet travels, I was reminded of two more words that are often misused - verses and versus. The word verse is most commonly used as a noun. Books of the Bible are broken down into chapter and verse, and a poem (or part of a poem) can be referred to as a verse. Verse is occasionally used as a verb, i.e., something that is written in verse. The word versus, more

Does Proper Use of Allude Elude You?

2012-03-06T11:59:00.000-05:00

I often do a double-take when I find words being misused while on my internet travels, but it does provide fodder for a quick blog post. Today's post touches on allude and elude, which sound alike, but have very different meanings. If you often confuse these two words, hopefully this post will help make it 'stick'. To allude means to point to something in an indirect

TopicSpotter: Newest Online Writing Site

2012-03-04T07:23:00.000-05:00

TopicSpotter is the newest online writing site to hit the internet, just opening their cyber doors the first week of March 2012. Since it's so new, there's almost no information out there to attest to its credibility or whether it might be a scam. Articles published on TopicSpotter earn through revenue sharing, but rather than sharing a portion of total revenue, ads from the
