The End Of The Internet

As We Know It

It is funny how events far removed from what we have to deal with every day can have an enormous effect on how we live. The "Free Trade" agreements that were enacted during the terms of President's Bill Clinton and George Bush II are an example of something that seemed beneficial at the time that has turned into something that rusted-out the framework of the American industrial heartland.

Then the Internet came along and investors poured a trillion dollars into investments in the physical network owned by the "Telco's." The Internet was supposed to make the "old economy" obsolete as we were all going to become wealthy sitting around in our jammy's typing on our "desktops" working on the new "WebCommerce" sites that were blossoming in the earthquake's cracks in the sidewalks of the "Silicon Valley."

American Newspapers' Online Dilemma

American newspapers at one time were owned by families that controlled the advertising in their regional markets. The Los Angeles Times was owned by the Chandler family and they reinvested the profits made from newspaper publishing into television stations and book publishing. As the family's wealth grew they hired Wall Street investment bankers for advice on how to become even more wealthy. Their answer was to "go public," list their shares on the New York Stock Exchange, and sell them to the public.

This was a very profitable idea and The Los Angeles Times became worth hundreds-of-millions of dollars. Things were going along great for the company until the Chandlers family's heir's decided to "cash-out" and sell the whole company. The Chicago real estate investor Sam Zell bought the company and "took it private," that is, it was not a "stock company" any more.

I have been doing research on the after-effects of the attack on New York City on September 11, 2001 on the citizens of the United States. There is more emphasis by the US government on tracking it's citizen's activities. For example when you travel by air you have to pay for the ticket's with a credit card there will be a record of your destinations.

When you renew your driver's license it is going to cost twice as much because of the "enhanced" security features that the Department of Homeland Security is going to require because of it's "Real ID" requirements, Click Underlined Link: Real ID to Create Real Problems For US

Summer Internet Trends

In summers past traffic on the Internet overall drops-off by up to 30% because most colleges are closed and people go "on vacation" in an attempt to leave their everyday lives, and problems behind, for a couple of days anyways.

Now, there are Internet capable "Smart-phones" that allow us to access our "Social Networking" Website pages from wherever we are on vacation. This is causing the Internet usage that is measured by the cellphone providers to remain close to the levels that they manage during the school year.

There is another development that is going to affect the Internet by the various laptop makers that are selling "Netbooks", smaller than a "Laptop" computers (made possible by not including hard and DVD Drives) that are being offered "free" by the largest cellphone provider (with the commitment to a two-year contract) but this form of Internet:

American Newspaper Crisis

We have been witnessing several of the national newpaper chains filing for bankruptcy as their best advertising accounts, department stores and new car dealers are themselves having a big drop-off in sales due to the condition of the economy.

The Tribune Company owns The Chicago Tribune, The Baltimore Sun, The Los Angeles Times and The Orlando Sentinel and although they are located in different areas of the US print similar articles, Click Link:Newspapers Across America Are Becoming More Alike

Internet Smart Phones

are enticing, like the new touch screen Blackberry Storm that has fast Internet capability.

The Apple iPhone was originally priced high so that only the most affluent users of the latest in tech gadgets would be able to buy it. This was part of Apple's plan to skim-off the most committed of the prospective users and lock them in to two-year contracts.

Apple is known for pricing it's products at the top of the market in each category it is involved in, this ensures that it's profit margins remain high even though it might cost the corporation some sales.

Now that Nokia, Samsung and LG have Internet capable smart phones Apple has lowered the price of the iPhone. The other cellphone service providers also have the unfair early cancellation fees. This is meant to limit competition as the cost of "disconnecting" the service is close to zero, as this done by entering an instruction in an online form.

Barack Obama Used Social Networking

sites to organize campaign volunteers and get his message to potential voters.

Early in the primary campaign to win the Democratic Party nomination for the Presidency the Obama campaign staff placed pages on the major social networking sites, as well as creating one for volunteers as a way to introduce the candidate to Americans that would be interested in his message of Change we Can Believe In.
Think Obamadotcom

As the primary campaign wore-on over eighteen months the Obama site was able to control the message. That is, when negative articles about the minister in Chicago were being broadcast and published, the campaign volunteers were being supplied with Obama's health care and energy plans as talking points to convey to voters in the various state primaries.

Advertising Works!

If you ever doubted the efficacy of spending lots of money on advertising, consider the recent Presidential Campaigns of both dominant political parties. Hundreds of millions of dollars were raised by both parties.

Barack Obama's campaign staff early on adopted the "social networking" techniques that MoveOn dot Org pioneered during the 2004 primary campaign to distribute information and organize a network of volunteer campaign workers in cities all over the United States. During the final months of the campaign Obama's organization had raised so much money that they had enough to establish offices in rural small towns, previously "pure red," Republican territory.

Facebook Changes

Pages, Draws Smileys, Frownys.

Facebook, the enourmously successful Social Networking Site that eclipsed the previous quick-growth giant MySpace is changing it's look and some of it's FunctionClicks to increase "usability" (and of course, users propensity to "ClickOnAds", the advertising that pays for all the free "to the user" sites) to mostly cheers, and a few jeers. On the Internet, as in life, you can't make everybody happy.

Will there be an increase in new users? It's hard to say, it appears that everybody that could use a Facebook page has one, so that leaves the kids graduating from grade school and discovering that there are more things to do with PCs and the Internet besides play games.

How High a Barrel of Oil, Mama...

?...$139 a barrel and rising...
The "Oil Futures" price (an option purchased today for delivery in one month) hit $139 a barrel recently and is predicted to head even higher as the "Summer Driving Season" gets underway as those Americans that still have jobs head for te various vacation destinations that our country has to offer.

Meanwhile, Americans still have a need for family entertainment on the weekends as we all need to spend quality time together even as the cost of driving continues to rise.

The partial answer to high gasoline prices is combining shopping and trips to entertainment destinations. The search for fresh entertainment creates opportunities for Internet Producers to serve-up content and ads to help Americans make their weekend entertainment decisisons even as they are driving less, Click;

Why Internet Business is an Underachiever

I was standing in line at the local post office waiting to buy one stamp. When I have to go to the California Department of Motor Vehicles I take a big-thick computer manual with me to read during the three and a-half wait to renew my drivers license. The post office takes 10 minutes, so as I was waiting I was thinking how much the Internet has changed the way we interact with businesses. I used to use a lot of US postage stamps that are not needed now. (Although whatever the Internet provider charges every month probably would pay for a years worth of stamps.)

I had time to think that most companies (and government agencies "just don't get it") as I read that US passports now cost $97.50! Plus the cost of the photo. I was thinking that residents of New York state often drive to Canada for lunch and how people that otherwise don't need a passport would pass on the trips to the Canadian side of Niagara Falls for the afternoon. This is going to affect businesses all along the 1700 mile border with the United States. The visitor passport requirement is going to affect our international relations with our next-door neighbor.

Attracting More Readers to Your Goldenprose From the Internet
