Have you ever wondered just what really makes a booklet author successful? The authors who are at the top have developed some habits that have helped them to cultivate their prosperity. Follow their lead and incorporate their habits into your own booklet adventure and you too will be successful!

Here are the top ten habits of highly successful booklet authors:

1) Be a doer, not a talker or a wisher. The doing creates success.

2) Face your fear. Fear can stop you cold only if you let it. If something creates anxiety or fear for you, do it anyway. Often you’ll find that once you have accomplished the thing you were afraid to do, you’ll feel empowered and the fear will be gone.

3) Do at least one thing every day to further your business. Send a letter, make a call, mail a sample. Just doing one thing every day means by the end of the month, if you work five days a week, you will have done 20 things that month to get your business ahead, get your name out there, and make money!

4) Have set work hours. Sure, you can take a long lunch if you really need to, but if you don’t know when you are going to work you’ll find the work doesn’t get done. Set your work hours and stick to them!

5) Keep interruptions at a minimum. This means letting friends and family know the hours you’re working, and the hours you’re available for them. It may also mean turning off your cell phone and unplugging your home phone.

6) Discipline yourself to use your time wisely. If you’re writing on the computer, don’t fall into the internet trap. A moment of surfing or even research can easily turn into an hour or more. If you need to research online, have a set time for doing so and stick to research until the time is up.

7) Make a list of what you need to accomplish each day. Your list is like a map. Without it you won’t know where you’re going and you’ll find that very little actually gets done. Prioritize your list and put the most important things at the top. That way, you’ll always get the important things done even if you don’t accomplish everything on your list.

Take time to plan and create new goals. When you accomplish a goal, you need a new to one to strive for in order to reach new heights of success.

9) Know what you want. If you don’t know what you want, you won’t know how to plan or what goals to strive for. You need to know what you want in your business and your life. What kind of lifestyle do you want to live? How much money do you want to make? How big do you want your business to be? Knowing what you want will define your terms of what success is for you.

10) Give your audience what they want. You can do everything else on this list and still fail if your audience isn’t interested in your booklet. Make sure your booklet fills a need or want with the information it provides.

To your riches!

Have you heard about writing a booklet but you aren’t sure just how to go about it or who would buy it? Does the booklet industry seem foreign or even a little strange to you? You’re not alone. Most wanna be authors don’t realize that this opportunity exists, and once they do they don’t understand how they can make money with it.

Booklets Are Nothing New

Booklets and small publications are nothing new. They have been around for centuries. You have probably received quite a few in your lifetime without realizing it.

Just like books, there are booklets created for just about every subject you can imagine, and in nearly every genre – including fiction. There are recipe booklets, weight loss booklets, booklets about childbirth and childcare, booklets about staying young and growing old, and everything in between. There’s no end to the subjects on which you might create a booklet.

Why Write A Booklet Instead Of A Book?

Most writers believe they must write a full length book in order to achieve success as an author. But, this simply isn’t true. Booklet authors are just as successful, if not more so, than authors of books.

Writing a booklet takes far less time than writing a book. It might take you a year to write your book manuscript, and possibly even much longer. But, you can have your booklet manuscript completed in as little as 24 hours if you’re really dedicated to it.

Also, booklets cost far less to produce than books do. When you’re self publishing, it can be difficult to come up with the money needed to produce a full length manuscript into a salable book. It’s far less taxing on the wallet to produce a smaller publication.

Another huge plus of writing a booklet is that you can actually make more money from a booklet than you can with a book. How? First, because you can take each chapter of your would-be book, and turn them into a booklet. If you have ten chapters, and your book would sell for $20.00, and you sell each of your booklets for just $5.00, those ten chapters will now sell for $50.00 instead of only $20.00.

Second, you can make bulk sales of booklets easier than you can with books. With all the cost cutting that companies are doing today, it’s much easier to get them to buy a smaller publication than a full length book. Their cost is minimal in comparison, and yet they still have the advantage of giving their employees or customers much needed or desired information.

Can You Really Make Any Money With Booklets?

Although most authors aren’t aware of the booklet opportunity, it is a lucrative one. You can sell your booklet to individuals, or you can sell in bulk to large companies and organizations. You can even sell to both.

The key to making sales is knowing what your particular market is hungry for. When you create a booklet, you should already know who your audience is before you ever write a word. That audience may be who will buy your booklet, or your buyer may be someone who serves that audience.

Why will they buy your booklet? In the case of the individual, they’ll buy it because they desire the information - simple as that. Bulk buyers reasons for purchasing your booklet are much more complex, but it really comes down to what they feel they will gain by purchasing your booklet. They may be looking to reward their customers for making a purchase or signing up for an account, or they may want to use your booklet to train their employees. They might be looking for something to hand out at trade shows that people won’t throw away, or they might want to send your booklet out at holiday time to thank their customers for their patronage all year long.

The booklet industry is a well kept secret. But, now you know about this rich opportunity. The only question remaining is – will you take advantage of it?

To your riches!

It’s easy to say you want to write a booklet. It’s easy to say you want to be a successful, rich booklet author. Many people do. They talk about writing a book or booklet. They talk about how much they want to be a successful author or get their message out. But, there’s a difference between talking and doing, and what it really boils down to is – how bad do you want it?

Why Your Success Or Failure Is All In Your Mind

Chances are you or someone you know wants to lose weight. But, it’s much easier to want to lose it than it is to actually do it. Maybe you, or that person, thinks about cutting back on calories or carbs and feels a sense of deprivation. That sense of deprivation might be enough to deter you from taking action to reach your goal. You don’t want to miss out on delicious food, or social gatherings. Food is such a huge part of our society, and you might not be willing to cut back.

Or, maybe you believe exercise is too difficult for you. Just thinking about it might make you ache. Or you might think that exercise is boring. You may have tried it before and been excited when you first began, but after a couple of weeks it became monotonous and you didn’t stick with it.

The truth is, if you really wanted to lose the weight, you would. You wouldn’t let anything stand in your way. You would gladly cut back on your calories or carbs, and you would exercise even when you didn’t feel like it. You would be focused on your goal and willing to do whatever necessary, no matter how painful, to reach it, because you would make up your mind to do it.

Don’t Give Up Before You Start

Writing a booklet is like losing weight. It sounds wonderful in the beginning, but you really have to want it in order to make it happen. Your booklet won’t write itself, it won’t produce itself, and it won’t sell itself. If you’ve got a passion for getting that message out that is burning inside of you, you’ve got a very good chance at being successful. But, you can’t give up before you start.

A lot of people talk themselves out of what they really want because they believe that it will be too difficult for them to have it. They have their comfort zone, and they aren’t willing to venture out of it, even if it means they could have something better.

So, Just How Bad Do You Want It ?

If you truly want to create a booklet and become a successful author, then do it. Make up your mind that you are going to get what you want and you won’t let anything stand in your way. It doesn’t matter if you don’t know how to write a coherent senctence. It doesn’t matter if you can’t spell. It doesn’t matter if you don’t have any kind of credentials. All that matters is what you want and being willing to stay the course until you have it.

Most people will simply wish forever. They’ll never have what they really desire because they aren’t willing to do what it takes to make it happen. They would gladly see their dreams come true if someone handed their dreams to them on a silver platter, but that’s not going to happen.

You can’t sit around waiting for someone else to hand you your dreams. You are the only one who can make it happen. But, you have to really want it and you must stay focused. If you don’t, your booklet will simply remain a wish inside your head, and all the people who you might have helped with your booklet will never get the chance to read it.

Ask yourself how bad you want to be a successful, rich booklet author. If you really want it then get started and never give up. That’s really all it takes. If you can do that, I promise you’ll get there!

To your riches,

Kim

Have you been contemplating what to write your booklet about? Maybe you’ve got more than one idea and you’re trying to decide which one is best or which one you should write first. Or maybe you love to write but you just can’t think of what to write about.

Either of these problems are easily solved when you go with the old saying, “Write what you know.”

Your Treasure Trove Of Knowledge

You have knowledge that is worth something to someone somewhere. You may not realize it, but it’s there. Your own life experience and interests has provided you with a wealth of knowledge that you could easily turn into a booklet. The key is finding the right knowledge inside of you to use – the knowledge that you’re most passionate about and that you enjoy sharing with others.

There’s Always Someone Who Knows Less Than You Do

Your life experience is literally worth a fortune. Have you been through a nasty divorce and come out a winner? Did you plan the perfect wedding? Are you good at getting hired where you want to? Do people come to you for advice? Have you raised a child with a disability and helped them to live a better life than was expected? Have you ever owned a successful business? Do you know how to study to improve your test scores?

All of these things and much, much more would make an excellent topic for a booklet. No matter what kind of life experience you have, there is always someone out there who knows less than you do and can learn from you through your booklet.

Why Your Booklet Will Be Special And Worth Reading

Writing what you know sounds cliche` but, it’s exactly what you should do. First, because it’s easy. You won’t have to do much, if any, research. And second because your experience is unique, and therefore your booklet will be too. It will stand alone in the marketplace as something special and worth reading.

Think about your own life experience and interests. Which ones do you feel the most passionate about? What, out of your experience, is most needed today by others? Which of your interests excites you most or is the most fun? Asking yourself these questions will help you decide which topic to write your booklet about.

To your riches!

Kim

Every person who goes into business for themselves makes mistakes, and booklet authors are no exception. You will make mistakes here and there as you travel along in your booklet adventure. It’s inevitable. You’ll make mistakes with your writing, and in production decisions, and even with your marketing and sales. If you’re in business, mistakes are part of the game. In fact, just being alive means you’re going to make mistakes sometimes.

Minimize Mistakes

Although you’re bound to make a few mistakes as you go along, the good news is that you can minimize them. How? By getting the information you need to be able to make informed decisions, or by gathering necessary data for your project, or by having someone check your work. There are many steps you can take to minimize mistakes, and the ones you employ will depend upon where you’re at in your booklet adventure and what you’re currently working on in the moment.

Mistakes Lead To Growth And Riches

As you continue in your booklet adventure and become more experienced, you’ll find you automatically make fewer mistakes. You’ll remember mistakes you’ve made in the past and you won’t repeat them. In fact, because of those mistakes, you’ll find ways to improve.

Mistakes are simply a stepping stone to improvement and ultimately, riches. Nobody is perfect. No one gets it right all the time. But, if we must make mistakes then let us learn from them so we can improve.

Your mistakes will help pave the way to riches for you when you learn from them and grow in experience because of them. The big executives at any large company are really being paid because of the mistakes they’ve made in the past. Without those mistakes they wouldn’t have the knowledge they do that is so valuable to their company. College and book learning can only take you so far. Nothing beats real world, hands on experience.

As the top dog of your own business, your knowledge is even more valuable than that of the corporate executive. Your knowledge is what will make your business grow and make you rich.

Mistakes are not bad. They’re just part of the game and without them, riches can’t come to you. Do your best to minimize them whenever you can, but when a mistake occurs embrace what you learn from it and put that knowledge to work for you!

To your riches!

Kim

PS: One good way to minimize mistakes is to consult with someone who has already been where you’re going. If you would like to discuss any aspect of booklets, from topic ideas to writing to production to marketing and sales, I am available for consultation by phone to answer all your questions and get you going in the right direction for just $149.00 for 30 minutes. And I guarantee our time together will be helpful to you or you will get every penny back! Chances are I’ve already made the mistakes that are ahead of you right now, and I can save you time and money. So think about it, and if you would like to set up an appointment just contact me through this blog! I’m excited about helping you with your booklet!

You’ve finished your manuscript. Now, how can you make sure it’s a winner? Aside from producing it as professionally as possible, you need someone from within your industry or who is knowledgeable about your topic to preview it.

Who Should Preview Your Booklet?

Finding the right person to preview your booklet might sound like a difficult task, but it really isn’t. In fact, they don’t have to be directly involved with your topic, although if they are that certainly won’t hurt. They just need to have some knowledge of it, preferably on a professional level.

For example, my own booklets are about living a gluten and dairy free lifestyle. When I asked someone to preview the booklets, I didn’t ask people who were already living a gluten and dairy free lifestyle, although this would have been an option to consider. But, I chose to have an executive at a small company that manufactures gluten free products review it, and his input was very valuable to me.

Why You Need Constructive Criticism

One thing you want to consider when having someone preview your booklet is the kind of criticism they will give you. You want constructive criticism that will help you improve your booklet. When you receive comments about your booklet from the person who is previewing it, you should ask yourself if those comments help you to make improvements. If they don’t, you need to find another person to preview the booklet. Not everyone is good at giving constructive criticism.

The More The Merrier

If you possibly can, it is a very good idea to allow more than one person to preview your booklet – up to as many as ten people. This gives you many different comments from which to draw conclusions about what might need to be changed in your booklet. Also, having more than one previewer will give you insight that you otherwise would not receive if you only had one person previewing your booklet – such as when several previewers have the same comment about some aspect of your booklet. If several previewers don’t like something, chances are your market won’t either.

Whether you choose to use professionals within your industry or you choose to use those who would actually receive the booklet or buy it, having your booklet previewed before it hits the market will save your credibility and help you to be professional. The comments you receive – both good and critical – will help you improve your booklet so that it will sell.

To your riches!

You’ve got a fantastic idea for a booklet and you just know it’s going to be a top seller. Great! But, you need to ask yourself one question. Why would anyone want to read your booklet?

What’s In It For Me?

No matter what kind of product a business has on the market, the question people will always ask themselves is “What’s in it for me?” In other words, they want to know why they should consider purchasing that product.

In the case of your booklet, the answer should be somewhat obvious. The answer is that your audience is receiving information that they want or need. Your job is to make sure that the information truly is what they want or need.

Why It’s Not About Price

Most of the time, when a product doesn’t sell it isn’t because of the price – unless it’s too low. If you price your booklet too low nobody will believe the information inside has any value and they won’t be inclined to buy.

When a product doesn’t sell, it’s usually a marketing issue. Either the market isn’t interested in the product (because they asked themselves what’s in it for them and they couldn’t get a satisfactory answer), or the company selling the product isn’t marketing it properly. Both of these issues can be solved with a little research.

Do Your Homework

It’s important to do your homework before you write your booklet. You must be able to answer the question, “Why should I read your booklet?” Think of a person from your target market. Imagine that person in your mind and hear them asking you that question. What will you tell them?

Whatever your answer is, begin with that and work from there. As you go you’ll find many reasons why people will want or need your information. Even after your manuscript is finished and your booklets are printed, you’ll continue to discover answers to this question. Those answers will help you with both your marketing and writing future booklets.

People have choices when it comes to your booklet. They can buy it, they can buy something else, and they can buy nothing at all. By asking yourself why people would want to buy your booklet (as opposed to buying something else or nothing), it helps you create a booklet people will want and you will be able to market it successfully.

To your riches!

Do you value your writing? Do you believe your booklet is or will be of value to someone? Knowing your work has value is an important step in your getting from an idea to the actual sales of your booklet. But, there is something that is even more important than what you think about your booklet, and that is what your market thinks of it.

Is Your Booklet Too Personal?

It doesn’t matter how good you think your booklet is, if your market doesn’t think it’s good or doesn’t believe it’s for them, your booklet won’t sell. If you’re writing about a passion you have, and you’re writing about it from a very personal perspective, you may not be able to reach your target audience.

Everyone has their own unique perspective of any given situation or circumstance. But, we also share some similarities within a given situation or circumstance.

For example, consider two brides preparing for their wedding day. Each will have unique circumstances regarding what they want and can afford for their wedding, who will attend, the date, time and place for the ceremony, etc.

If you were going to write a booklet about creating the perfect wedding, and you wrote the booklet about your own experience, it might be difficult for your audience to relate.

Make It About Them

Now let’s take our example above and rewrite it from a wider perspective. Instead of writing about your own experience, you might write that booklet based on your experience, but with alot more wiggle room.

In other words, your bookelt isn’t so tightly written that it’s only about your own narrow perspective. It leaves room for your audience to come up with ideas of their own and glean something from your writing that’s personal to them.

Your booklet shouldn’t be about your perfect wedding or even your idea of what that should be. Your booklet should help the bride come up with her own idea of what the perfect wedding is for her. You should give her plenty of food for thought and ideas, perhaps a page or two for writing those thoughts and ideas, maybe some budgeting tips, and ideas for romantic places for having the wedding and/or honeymoon.

The Sad Truth

The wedding booklet example above is an extreme example, but it illustrates the point. When you create a booklet it should be all about your audience – their needs and wants, not yours. You may have some wonderful insight regarding your topic, but you must be careful to tailor it to your market rather than writing solely from your own perspective.

That isn’t to say your perspective won’t color your writing. It will and it should. You just don’t want it to be so strong that nobody can relate to it. Nobody cares about your writing more than you do, and the sad truth is that people won’t buy your booklet because it’s good. People will buy your booklet because it’s about them in some way.

Consider the Lord Of The Rings trilogy. The stories are a work of fiction, and the circumstances were not real, so why were the movies such a hit at the box office? Yes, marketing did play a huge role in that, but there have been plenty of well marketed movies that didn’t fare so well. So, what was it?

It was the audience’s ability to relate to the characters. We may not be going through the exact same circumstances but we feel the same emotions. Watching the main character with his friend, and seeing the bond between them and how courageous they both were gives us hope for our own circumstances. It’s something we can relate to.

In the same way your audience needs to be able to relate to your booklet. They must believe it was created just for them. When they do they’ll snap your booklets up like hotcakes!

To your riches!

Your work time is important. You need time to think about what to write, and time to actually write. You need time to come up with production ideas, and time to talk with prospective buyers. In essence, You need time to run your booklet business, and you can’t do it when you’re constantly interrupted – either by your own doing or by those around you.

Plan Your Work Time

From the very start of your booklet adventure, you must decide when you will work. It’s ok to start part time. You might choose to only work an hour each day, five days a week in the beginning. Or, you might choose to work eight hours a day five days a week, working full time. Either way is fine, and so is anything in between.

Choosing the days and hours you will work helps you to define how your day will look. When you know that you will be working Monday through Friday from 9am to noon, you know that you won’t be available for anything else during that time. This allows you to plan your time so that you can get your work done. It also allows you to plan your fun, or other things outside of work that you want or need to do.

As the sole owner of your booklet business you probably work from home, and one of the main problems with that is that most people who attempt self employment from home don’t know how to structure or plan their day so that it is productive. This is why so many businesses fail and so many business owners go back to their old job working for someone else.

Stick To Your Plan

Once you know what days and hours you will work, you must stick to your plan and actually work. Work time doesn’t mean that you talk to your friends on the phone, surf the internet or get in touch with your Facebook friends. These kinds of activities suck the productive time out of you like a vampire sucking blood. Spending your time on these activities instead of working shifts your focus, making it more difficult for you to get your work done even if you want to get back to it.

Save all your non-work activities for your off hours. Use your working hours for building your business and your future. Whenever you’re tempted to do something during your work hours that is not a work related activity, just imagine that activity costing you money – because it is! You just don’t realize it.

How To Curtail Outside Interruptions

Sometimes, in spite of your best efforts, you will be interrupted by others when you’re working. Interruptions cost you time and make it difficult to get back on track. One study showed that it takes the average person 20 minutes to pick up where they left off after an interruption occurred. That’s 20 minutes lost forever, plus the time the actual interruption took! If you’re working part time, that really cuts into your day and sucks up your productivity!

People who interrupt your productivity need to know exactly when your working hours are, and when it’s ok to talk with you or call you. Your friends and family don’t mean to interrupt. They just don’t know what your working parameters are. They may think that because you’re at home, you’re available. They don’t realize that you need time simply to concentrate on what you’re doing. After all, you’re at home. You can do as you please. This means they think they can talk to you now and you can work later. It’s up to you to tell them that you can’t, and why.

Being constantly interrupted is not only frustrating, it’s non-productive and costs you time and money. Don’t make the mistake of allowing yourself or others to interrupt your work time except in the case of a true emergency. Choose your working hours and then guard them carefully. Your riches depend on it!

To your riches,

Kim

When you decide to create your first booklet, your focus is very narrow. You think about the writing, the finished copies and the sales. You imagine the checks coming in. And that’s good, but if you can widen your focus even just a little and try to see beyond that first booklet, you just might catch a glimpse of a future that is far richer than you ever could have dreamed.

Where Do You Want To Be 12 Months From Now?

If you’re just beginning your first booklet, you’ve got an advantage. You have the opportunity to start from scratch and build your business from the ground up to be exactly the way you want it to be.

But, even if you’re working on your 10th booklet, you can still look ahead and make decisions for what you really want to do and where you really want your business to be in the next 12 months or the next three to five years.

Most people don’t give much thought to what they really want. They go to a mundane, boring job day after day so they can keep food on the table and pay their rent, or mortgage, and their bills. That is their life and they’ve accepted it and made their peace with it. But, that doesn’t have to be your existence if you don’t want it to be.

How NOT To Get Caught Up In The Daily Grind

Any business, even a booklet business, can become a mundane existence if you only concentrate on the work in front of you. You must take some time to think about your future and the future of your business. You must take time to plan and make goals for yourself so that you’re constantly striving to achieve something.

When you have no goals to work toward, you get caught up in the daily grind and it becomes monotonous. Goals create excitement and passion. They keep you going. And it isn’t because of the thrill of achieving them, although it is a good feeling to accomplish something you set out to do. It’s because they bring rewards with them when they are met.

When you take time to think about your future and make plans and create goals, you are building the kind of business and future that you want. It isn’t left up to chance. You are in the drivers seat, and you decide where you want to go.

You must be an active participant in planning your future and the future of your booklet business. You must decide what you want. When you do, you’ll achieve your goals and have what you desire. But, if you don’t, you’ll simply go from day to day, dealing with whatever comes up. It will be a never ending grind because you won’t feel like you’re working toward something.

So, What Will Your Business Be When It Grows Up?

Make some time to plan today. Don’t wait. If you do you’re putting your future and your dreams on hold. Think about your writing and your business. Maybe you haven’t even thought of writing a booklet as a business, but it is.

Your booklet is your product. Since you’ll be selling that product for profit, you have a business. Define its parameters today. How big do you want it to become? Do you want to create just one booklet and build your business around it? Or do you want to create many booklets? Will you only sell booklets or will you create other products too? Will you work from home, or do you see yourself in an office long term?

And, while you’re at it, think about what you want from your business for yourself. The whole reason of being in business for yourself in the first place is to achieve your dreams. If you can’t do that, then you might as well be trading hours for dollars in some dismal, gray cubical somewhere.

So, what do you want? Yes, more money, but how much more? $10,000 a year? $50,000? $200,000? A million or more? Don’t be afraid to dream big. Go for it! Decide what you want. Once you do, then ask yourself what kind of business you need to build to achieve that goal.

You truly can have whatever you want. Just figure out what you want, plan and create the goals you need to get there, and then get started and watch your business grow!

To your riches!
