Railing against the “67 percent” tax hike

I'm sick and tired of this. No, not Governor Quinn and the Democrats raising taxes, but the ongoing media hit job on this story. I've been following this story for a while across a variety of Chicago media sources and the way it is being portrayed is mostly pathetic and kind of embarrassing.

Almost every source is portraying this at a “67% tax hike” and while that's technically true, it is being done in a misleading manner. The state income tax is going from 3% to 5% which sounds a whole lot less scary than 67%. The Sun-Times, Chicago Tribune, WGN-TV and CBS 2 all lead with the 'scary' number then mention further down story the actual context of it..

Kudos to NBC 5 whose first reference was “an extra 2%” and only using the dreaded 67% number via a quote from Blagojevich. I also have to give a major THANK YOU to Huffington Post for taking the exact opposite angle of most of the coverage, even if it is in the context of inter-state rivalry.

Since Illinois lawmakers passed a two-point income tax increase -- raising rates from three to five percent to address the state's dire budget crisis -- neighboring states have been crowing about how ugly the climate now looks in Illinois.

I understand that most people hate the concept of “raising taxes” and it is almost too easy to write this story in a way that's favorable to your outlet, but that doesn't make it okay. How about a little journalistic integrity when it comes to those low-hanging fruit?
