Poisonous Root

"Make sure there is no man or woman,

clan or tribe among you today

whose heart turns away from the LORD our God

to go and worship the gods of those nations;

make sure there is no root among you that produces

such bitter poison.

When such a person hears the words of this oath

and they invoke a blessing on themselves,

thinking, 'I will be safe,

even though I persist in going my own way,'

they will bring disaster on the watered land

as well as the dry."

It seems harsh. The heart of God is relationship, so when sin damages a bond between members of the body of Christ, I am to lovingly pursue reconciliation. The process laid out in Matthew 18:15-20 requires community involvement. There is always the risk that my thinking is selfish so if I seek the godly counsel of others and they agree, I avoid the risk of pursuing my own agenda. There is also the risk that I form a mob to come against my brother or sister so my heart must be bent on reconciliation, not retribution or revenge.

If all the required steps have been taken and still there is no agreement, then the offending child of God must be treated as an outsider, removed from the fellowship of His people. Why would God require such action when He is a God who goes after the lost sheep?

The answer is found in today's passage. While God is merciful and gracious, He is also holy. His concern is for the sanctity of His people and He knows how easy it is for us to go astray. We, like sheep, tend to wander, especially if those around us are compromising (Isaiah 53:6). Consequently, God warned His people in today's passage of the prideful heart that thinks he's safe even in his disobedience and defiance. This line of thinking pollutes the holiness of God's people and puts the whole Body at risk of turning away from the Lord and His ways.

What poisonous root do I tolerate in my life?

Sin

A mistake.

A misstep.

A blunder.

An error.

It's easy to minimize sin, labeling it as something other than what it is: defiance toward holy God and His holy ways. I often do this when I don't want to face the facts. Sin is destructive and dangerous. When I allow an area of sin to remain in my life, I am putting my own desires above God's. I am placing my own pleasure higher than God's plan for my life. I am making a mockery of the sacrifice Jesus became on the cross.

When I downplay the sin of which God has convicted my heart, it is as if I am spitting in the face of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He bore the wrath of His Father, an unimaginable nightmare of the worst kind, to conquer sin for His people. Why should I then invite it in, growing comfortable with the very thing that requires death as a punishment?

If I am to remove such a poisonous root in my own life, I must be careful to not tolerate sin. When God opens my eyes to my tendency to gossip, for example, and I sense His gentle nudge as I begin to share with a friend a tasty morsel disguised as a prayer update, I would be wise to stop the flow of words immediately.

Or if God reveals my issue with fudging the truth to avoid conflict and I'm on the verge of using the destructive tactic once again, I would be wise to instead speak the truth in love, pointing all involved in the disagreement to the common ground of the Gospel (Ephesians 4:15).

Or for the time when God makes clear my inclination to indulge in worldly entertainment that dishonors His holy name and desensitizes my heart, I would be wise to take every step necessary to avoid such temptations.

I am at risk of cultivating a poisonous root that could infect the Body of Christ when I become comfortable with sin in my life.

Self-Sufficiency

When my daughters were young, my goal for them was that they would become self-sufficient and independent. I envisioned them going out into the world and earning success in whatever field they pursued. As they grew, however, my relationship with God matured and I learned more about Him and His ways.

Soon I discovered that He doesn't want me to rely on my own strength at all, nor does He care for me to go after selfish pursuits. Instead, His desire is for me to be dependent upon Him for all my needs and to pursue righteousness and His kingdom. Boy, did I have it backwards (Matthew 6:33, 2 Timothy 2:22, 2 Corinthians 12:9-10)!

I live in a world that preaches self-sufficiency. I am bombarded with messages that tell me to overcome, that I can do whatever I put my mind to, and that I can pull myself up by my own bootstraps. Basically, I'm told that I have what it takes inside of me to reach the stars.

In reality, there is nothing good within me and relying on myself is kind of like the blind leading the blind. If I really want to succeed in life, then, I will need to seek God with all of my heart, waiting on Him and His provision (Jeremiah 29:11-13, Isaiah 40:31). He holds the key to unlock the blueprint for my life, so I will never find a sense of purpose until I come into a relationship with Him, letting Him take the lead.

That means I will need to diligently turn away from my own desire to be the master of my own destiny and turn toward my true Master. I will need to fight the urge to make things happen and instead wait on His perfect timing. I will need to stop looking for escape routes and solutions and start fixing my eyes on Jesus (Hebrews 12:1-2).

I am at risk of cultivating a poisonous root that could infect the Body of Christ when I rely on my own strength and understanding (Proverbs 3:5-6).

Sense

I ignored the advice offered by several godly people because it didn't make sense to me. After a couple of years, a friend spoke the same wisdom but this time I paid attention because she also provided additional enlightenment. I never recognized the value of the advice until it made sense to me.

I struggle with obeying without understanding. If something doesn't make sense to me, I tend to balk. This is a problem when it comes to my relationship with God. I'm kind of like the African impala who has an innate ability to jump great heights, but only if it can see where his feet will land. If I only do what makes sense to me, I miss out on many of the blessings that come with obeying a God whose ways are unfathomable (Isaiah 55:8-9).

It takes faith to blindly go where God is leading. In fact, I would even say this is the definition of faith; stepping forward without knowing where the path will lead me. Hebrews 11:1 gives a great description of faith. "Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see" (NLT).

To boldly follow God's lead when He calls me to take a risk means I must believe He knows what He's doing even when I can't see a foot in front of me. Other times He may inspire me to go beyond my own natural abilities, volunteering for a job that is outside my normal parameters. Then there are the times when He sends a hailstorm of trials and tribulations, challenging me to trust Him to guide me through the onslaught.

I am at risk of cultivating a poisonous root that could infect the Body of Christ when I limit my faith to only what I understand.

Poison is deadly and ruthless, infecting all who come in contact. When I become comfortable with sin, take on an attitude of self-sufficiency and rely on my own common sense, I am allowing a poisonous root to take hold in my heart. When I do so, I am placing the Body of Christ at risk. Therefore, it is in my own best interest as well as that of my brothers and sisters that I guard against such corruption.

As I begin this day it is my prayer that I can keep my heart open to God, allowing Him to examine every nook and cranny.

When do I stubbornly refuse to turn away from sin?

How am I relying on my own common sense instead of trusting in God's higher ways?

Not Yet Revealed

Samuel.

The boy awoke with a start. What was that? he thought. Someone called my name. It must have been Eli. The lad had grown used to this new routine, serving the Lord in the temple, learning under the watchful eye of the priest and father-figure. Eli must have summoned me. He quickly rushed to his side. "Yes, sir, what is it that you want?"

"I didn't call you. Go back to bed!"

That's strange, I was sure I heard him call my name, Samuel thought as he made his way back to his pallet. As soon as he drifted off to sleep, it happened again.

Samuel.

This time the boy jumped up, making his way to Eli's bed. "I'm here, sir, you called me?"

"No! I didn't say a word! Now settle down and get back in bed."

As his young charge settled back on his cot, he wondered if he was hearing things. Maybe I was dreaming. This thought comforted him and he relaxed, closing his eyes.

Samuel.

There it was again! This time I'm sure I heard my name! Running to Eli's side, confident he had been summoned. "Yes, sir, here I am as you called."

Finally, it dawned on Eli. "It is not I who is calling you, Samuel, but the Lord. Here is what you must do. The next time He calls your name, say, 'Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.'"

Samuel could hardly believe his ears. The Lord our God, maker of heaven and earth, is taking the time to speak to me, his humble servant? (dramatized from 1 Samuel 3:1-10)

Samuel was young and inexperienced, not familiar with the ways of the Lord. As a result, he didn't recognize God's voice. Similarly, I won't be able to distinguish His voice from all the others crying out to me until I know Him for myself. How can I become so intimate through faith in Jesus Christ with the God of the universe? Here are three areas on which I can focus.

Fastidious

His attention to detail boggled my mind. He sure does take his job seriously, I thought as I watched the man work. It didn't seem that important to me, but my boss during the summer that I worked as his assistant revealed how earnest was his attitude toward his job. I guess that's why he gets paid the big bucks, I sarcastically thought as I refiled some forms I had misplaced. He doesn't miss a thing!

While performing conscientiously at work may result in a pay raise or a promotion, adopting this attitude in my relationship with God has an even greater reward. When I take God and His Word seriously, my bond with Him will grow stronger.

Take David as an example. He was not the most upright character, after all. He was a murderer whose infidelity and conniving ways got him into quite a bit of trouble (2 Samuel 11). Despite his evil behavior, however, he went down in history as a man after God's own heart. Why? God knew that David would do what He asked him to do.

Do I take God as seriously? It's easy for me to give myself a pass, easing my conscious by telling myself that I'm too busy, or I've got too much on my mind, or that nobody's perfect. While it does take time and effort that uses my limited brain power to devote myself to doing as God says, my own lack of fitness is not an excuse. You see, it's not so much about performance but more about my heart.

When I am conscientious regarding God and His ways, I'll pay close attention to what He is speaking to my heart instead of brushing Him aside as unimportant. Just because I have a million other things to do doesn't mean I can ignore Him as He impresses upon me His will. The woman who needs a listening ear, or the child who craves a tender touch, or the frustrated worker who could stand a bit of compassion will all benefit from my willingness to be used by a loving God.

When I take God seriously, I'll also find I'm able to do much more than I could ever imagine. Even though I am weak, God never grows tired and His resources are unlimited(Isaiah 40:28). Therefore, if I love God enough to pay careful attention to His commands, I'll find that it won't take as much energy as I feared to forgive a friend who wounded me deeply, or to respond in love, or to extend an olive branch.

When I am fastidious about paying attention to the details of God's Word, I will discover the thread of grace that runs through each phrase of scripture. His grace is what saves me, but it also is what enables me to live a holy life as He has called me to live (1 Peter 1:13-16). With man this is impossible, but when I stay connected to Him as my lifeline, all things are possible (Matthew 3:26). Taking Him at His Word means I'll believe He can use even me, despite my weaknesses. Then, I will witness His power at work in my heart, transforming me into the likeness of His Son (Philippians 1:6).

Taking on a serious attitude toward God and His ways will result in a closer bond with God as I learn to take Him at His Word.

Compliant

When my daughters were younger, there was one out of the four on whom I could count to always do as I asked. Therefore, I had to be careful not to take advantage of her compliant attitude, piling more duties onto her responsible shoulders than I did on her sisters. Her willing spirit made her my go-to girl.

I will find that if I take on the obedient attitude of my daughter when it comes to God, my bond with Him will grow stronger. God pays more attention to my heart than to my outward appearance, my behavior or the show I tend to put on for others. Therefore, my softness toward Him is what matters most. The reason why I do things is what He notices more than what I am doing. A contentment in my own skin makes more of a difference to God than all the effort I can put into trying to be who I think He wants me to be.

My willingness to respond to God's calling on my life reveals a heart devoted to Him. My stubborn insistence on doing things my way exposes my focus on my own selfish plan. The former is an obedient heart, the last a rebellious one. Only the first will please God (1 Samuel 15:22).

It isn't as bad to let God have His way in my life as I may think it is. God knows me better than I know myself because He made me for His purposes. Therefore, if I let Him lead, submitting to His headship, I will experience peace as things flow in the way He meant for them to function.

Furthermore, God is a good God who can be trusted with my heart. He has my best intentions in mind and only allows things into my life that will further my growth, improve my character, and mold me into the form He created me to take (Romans 8:28-29, Romans 5:3-5, Isaiah 64:8). Therefore, if I give in to Him as the Master Potter, I will find myself becoming the woman He created me to be. None of this will happen, however, without my cooperation (Romans 12:2).

Taking on a compliant heart toward God will result in a closer bond with Him as I learn to obey Him without question.

Single-Minded

I watched the vessel dip and bob in the rough water, threatening to capsize as a large wave crashed over it. The tiny craft was completely at the mercy of the mighty sea, unable to control it's fate. Even though I knew it was only a toy, I felt sorry for the little boat.

I can be just like that little ship, tossed about by the waves of the bathtub where four rambunctious toddlers played. When I doubt God's sovereignty, fear the unknown, or hesitate to trust Him fully, I become as unstable as that toy (James 1:5-8). Instead of casting off in faith, I hold back, clinging to my moorings, afraid to enter into the fray. When I take God at His Word, trusting in Him and Him alone, however, I'll surge forward with confidence, knowing that God will take care of me.

Single-mindedness means I will always point to Jesus as the answer to every problem (John 14:6, Revelation 21:6). It also means I'll put all my eggs into His basket, believing that nothing else will truly satisfy (John 4:14). Having such a strong sense of purpose also means I won't doubt when God is leading me into the unknown, instead walking forward with the assurance that the Lord goes before me (Judges 4:14).

When the doubt creeps in, invading my mind like an unwanted intruder, I can remind myself of the truth of who God is, refocusing my thoughts onto what will please God (Philippians 4:8). When fear rears its ugly head like a monster bent on destroying the peace of my heart, I can turn my attention away from what scares me and onto my Warrior God (Exodus 14:14). When my own sense of insecurity threatens to be my undoing, I can remind myself Who is my strength (Psalm 46:1-3).

Taking on a single-minded focus on God and His omnipotent power will result in a closer bond with him as I learn to trust Him solely.

Maybe I don't recognize God's voice because I don't know Him as intimately as was His design. Therefore, if I become fastidious in my study of God and His ways, take on a compliant spirit, and develop a laser-focus with Him as my target, I will find my bond with Him growing stronger. Then He will be able to reveal Himself more clearly to me, and I will recognize that still, small voice as belonging to Him.

As I begin this day it is my prayer that I can submit myself to God, letting go of the fear that cripples me and the doubt that holds me back.

Sounds Good to Me

"In those days

there was no king in Israel.

Everyone did what was right in his own eyes."

Judges 17:6 ESV

It seemed like a good idea at the time: Go to college, earn a degree and see what happens. The problem is, I didn't even consult the Master Planner. Instead, I did what seemed right to me. I guess it wasn't surprising since I lived my life based on what sounded good to me. If I wanted to participate in a certain activity, there was nothing to hold me back as long as I felt comfortable doing it. If a boy expressed interest in me and told me I was beautiful, I gave my heart to him because it felt right. If a thought entered my mind, I examined it fully from every angle since I lacked any kind of filtering system. You see, I was my own god for many years after I made a profession of faith in Jesus Christ but I failed to submit to His Lordship until I was well into my adult years.

I guess my life might not be so different from your life. I can see it was also very similar to Micah's. He lived during the time of the judges and did what seemed right to him; He set up his own shrine in his home and ordained his own son to be priest. Instead of following God's instructions for proper worship, he did things his way. He meant well; doesn't that count for something (Leviticus 8-10)?

It's easy for me to take on this same attitude, thinking that as long as I'm trying to worship God, it doesn't matter how I do it. Let's see what God says.

Living Sacrifice

Hands held high. Bodies swaying back and forth. Eyes closed. Worshipful expressions on the faces of the people. The voice of the worship leader gently prodded, "Let it go. Let God have His way with you right now in this place." The people responded, each doing what seemed like it might look like they were worshiping God. Meanwhile, the Lord was paying no attention to the outward appearance. Instead, He was concerned with the hearts of His people, especially after they piled into their cars and headed home (1 Samuel 16:7).

It's easy for me to think that worship is what takes place on Sunday mornings or Wednesday evenings when I gather with other believers to sing praises to my Lord and Savior. While this is a form of worship, if I truly want to revere and adore my Maker, I must look to scripture for instructions.

The Lord tells us clearly in Romans 12:1 how to truly worship Him. He said through the Apostle Paul that, in light of everything He has done for me, I can give my entire life, totally surrendering to Him and His plan as a form of living and holy sacrifice to Him. When I do this, I am worshiping God not just with my lips or in the way that seems right to me, but I am giving Him what He wants most: my heart.

This means I will let go of my desire to control the details of my life, to decide which way I want to go, to make up my own mind as to how I will spend the time, money and gifts He has given me. Instead, I will freely turn the responsibility of managing my life over to Him, letting Him control the ins and outs of my life, allowing Him to lead me down the path He has laid out for me, and giving Him Lordship over the resources He has so generously bestowed upon me.

I have my own idea of what worship looks like based on what I see around me, but if I want to do what is right in God's eyes, I must pay attention to His design for worship.

Pure Religion

There is much pressure to conform to my religion. I feel guilty if I miss a Sunday at church. I don't feel comfortable spending the money I should be tithing. I beat myself up if I slip and let a curse word fly when I'm frustrated. I just can't seem to live the way I think I should be living. I would never tell anyone, but I secretly wonder what good this religion is if all it does is heap a heavy burden on my shoulders. I already have enough to worry about!

Does this sound familiar? It's easy turn Christianity into a set of rules to follow, a mold to which I must conform, or a way of living I think I need to mimic. Instead, Jesus died a horrible death, emptying Himself of His divine privileges in order to make it possible for me to have a relationship with the One who loves me perfectly (Philippians 2:6-8, Romans 5:10, 1 John 3:1a).

Consequently, it is my relationship with a loving and merciful God that is most important (Luke 10:38-42). Instead of trying to follow a set of religious rules, then, I can simply follow Him (Matthew 11:28-30). As I fall into step with Him, I will find that He changes my heart, giving me a desire to do things that please Him (Philippians 2:13). As a result, my religion will begin to morph into something more in line with what God has in mind.

Instead of feeling pressure to go to church and listen to the Bible being taught, I will take in His Word as if it were life itself, letting it cut out the parts of me that don't line up (Hebrews 4:12). Instead of doing service out of obligation, I will discover a passion for helping the widows and orphans God places in my life: It will be a joy to help take care of their needs (James 1:27). Likewise, instead of trying so hard to clean up my language out of duty, I will find that I want to honor God with my words and to stay separate from the ways of the world which resonate deeply to my sin nature (James 1:26-27).

I have an idea of what religion looks like based on a set of rules, but if I want to do what is right in God's eyes, I will have to instead focus on my relationship with Him.

Obedience

At this time of year, many people decide to give something up for Lent. It might be a certain habit, an indulgence, or an activity each offers as a sacrifice. Whatever is surrendered, the idea is to give it up for 40 days before Easter as a symbol of turning back to God.

While this can have some real spiritual impact, for most people it is a temporary sacrifice made out of obligation. The hope may be that the fast will last for the rest of their lives, but nearly all who give something up for Lent go back to their old ways once Easter rolls around.

Samuel, the prophet and final judge of the nation of Israel, delivered a message from God to Saul when he similarly tried to give a sacrifice as a way to earn God's favor before an important battle. Instead of obeying God's instructions to the "t," however, Saul tried to use the offering as a sort of talisman, hoping that it would result in God's stamp on approval of him as king before he entered into combat. Saul wanted the power God wields without wanting God Himself. Samuel set him straight, telling him that, "To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams" (1 Samuel 15:22).

Instead of trying to give something up for the sake of giving it up, then, I would be better off paying attention to His Word and yielding to His work in my life. When I sense His gentle prodding to forgive a sister who has wounded me deeply, it would please Him most if I let go of the hurt that is eating me up inside (Ephesians 4:32). When I know He is telling me it is important to wait on His time, I would give Him pleasure if I stopped my forward progress to give His plan a chance to work out in my life (Isaiah 40:31). When I read in His Word that love is more important than any of the gifts I can use in His name, opening my heart to let His love flow through me would put a smile on my Father's face (1 Corinthians 13:1-3).

I may be tempted to make sacrifices to prove the seriousness of my faith, but if I want to do what is right in God's eyes, I would be better off putting my efforts into obedience.

I am not so different from Micah, the Old Testament character who tried to worship God in a way that seemed right to him. When I do what is right in my own eyes, however, I am not pleasing God. If I want to give Him pleasure, then, I must offer my life as a sacrifice, focus on growing closer in my relationship with Him, and make obedience my greatest desire. In these ways I'll stop doing what sounds good to me and start doing what truly is good in God's eyes.

As I begin this day it is my prayer that I can stop following a form of religion that leads nowhere.

Hannah's Heart

"So in the course of time

Hannah became pregnant

and gave birth to a son.

She named him Samuel,

saying, 'Because I asked the LORD for him.'"

1 Samuel 1:20

Her life was far from a fairy tale. In fact, I would say that Hannah lived a difficult life that was filled with suffering. She was childless in a culture that revered and valued motherhood. Making her situation even more challenging was the fact that the poor woman was favored by her clueless husband in a home shared by two wives, setting her up for much abuse. You see, the other woman with whom she split her husband was quite fertile but possessed a cruel nature and never let an opportunity pass to unmercifully provoke her, always keeping her own infertility constantly before her.

I can't think of a more strained existence than the one lived by Hannah. How did she deal with such circumstances? In a way from which I can draw much insight and wisdom in how to face my own struggles.

Godly Priorities

When I first met the man who would later become my husband, I only knew about him what I could observe from the little time I spent with him. As time went by, we began to hold long conversations on the phone, talking about what was going on in each of our lives, sharing our dreams and revealing childhood memories. Still, I only knew a fraction of what made the whole person.

Once we got married and started living life together, however, I began to really get to know him. I discovered his quirky ways, learned more about his views on life and also unearthed some quite annoying habits. It wasn't until I invited him into the intimate parts of my life that his true character was revealed.

Similarly, I can read the Bible and find out quite a bit about the Lord. My spare time can be spent in listening to sermons and classes taught about the God I desire to know. It is not until I invite Him into the intimate parts of my life, however, living life in tandem with Him that I find out His true character (Revelation 3:20, Psalm 34:8). This is the kind of relationship Hannah enjoyed with the Lord. She knew Him intimately, as evidenced by her prayer found in 1 Samuel 2:1-10.

While leaning on Him during her hard times, Hannah learned that He was her strength, a Deliverer who is holy and can be counted upon. She also found out as she relied on Him that He is a righteous Judge and is filled with knowledge, the only One who is sovereign over all things. As she walked with Him she realized that putting all her hope in Him would never disappoint and that He was her mighty Warrior, always faithful to fight her battles for her.

With such knowledge gained by living in relationship with the Lord, she was able to put all her faith in Him, turning to the One she knew would understand even when no human around her did.

When the going gets tough in my own life, I can learn a lesson from Hannah and get to know the God who is my only true hope.

All In

She gave up the very thing she wanted most. Many years were spent yearning for a child, and when God finally granted her the joy of being a mother, she gave the precious gift back to God. In a pure act of spiritual dedication and commitment to the Lord, Hannah was willing to let go of her most valued earthly possession. In her mind that was committed to the Lord, the greatest evidence of her gratitude to Him was for her to give that which she had wanted most back to the One whom she valued even more.

Jim Elliot once wrote in his journal that, "He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose." Hannah knew a little something about such kingdom values. The things of this world will pass away no matter how tightly we clutch them. On that great day when I enter into glory and taste what Jesus has prepared for me, I will finally realize the foolishness of going after the things of this world. It is then that the insignificance of what I once thought was earth-shattering will become apparent.

Hannah lived with this perspective in the here and now, fully giving her life to the Lord. She understood that her connection to God was what would last, giving her complete and utter joy. Everything else, even the child she so desperately desired, could not bring such fullness as could her bond with the Lord. Therefore, she was willing to let go of everything else and live with abandon to Him.

I, too, can live such a life. I can hold onto my worldly possessions with an open hand, being willing to let them go, believing that what Jesus is preparing in heaven far surpasses anything I can obtain in this world. I can also commit my loved ones to the Lord, letting Him be the One to change their hearts, protect them from evil and guide them down the path that leads to life. Instead of fretting over their position, I can confidently place them in the hands of Him who loves them even more than do I. It is even possible for me to let go of the dreams I have always held close to my heart, placing them for safe keeping in the hands of the One who can make them come true in a way that honors Him.

When the going gets tough in my own life, I can learn a lesson from Hannah and fully commit my life to the Lord who loves me perfectly.

Anti-Anxiety

There was nothing pleasant about her life. Worry and stress were a regular part of each day. Would she ever taste the joys of motherhood? What if what Peninnah said was true, what if her life was meaningless without children? Why would God bless such a mean-spirited woman with so many children and give her none?

Instead of dwelling upon all that was difficult, however, Hannah knew the truth found in Philippians 4:6-7. She poured out her heart to the Lord, sharing all that grieved her so deeply. She didn't withhold even the ugliest thoughts, instead revealing them to the One who knew her intimately and loved her still. As she did so, peace flooded her soul, guarding her mind from destructive thoughts and her heart from despair (1 Samuel 1:16-18).

The same is true for me. Instead of focusing on what is distressing in my life, I can hand it all over to the Lord, unloading my burdens upon His shoulders. As I do, I will find a sense of well-being and serenity replace the familiar feelings of apprehension and fretfulness.

While it is easy for me to analyze my situation, coming up with dozens of possible solutions in my mind, trusting God to reveal His perfect plan in His own time will replace my sleepless nights with peaceful slumber. In place of looking for possible alternatives to my seemingly hopeless condition, I can share my disappointments with the One who is able to do so much more than I could ever ask or even imagine (Ephesians 3:20). Instead of looking for plausible answers, I can watch for the mind-blowing solution the God of the impossible brings about, to His own glory (Luke 1:37).

When the going gets tough in my own life, I can learn a lesson from Hannah and place all my anxiety on the One who delivers unfathomable peace to my soul.

There is no doubt that Hannah was dealt a rough hand with which to play. Instead of whining about the difficulties that marked her life, however, she took the time to know on an intimate level the One who created all things, fully committed her whole life to Him, and trusted Him with her most confidential thoughts. In these ways, I too can retain godly priorities, totally commit everything I've been given to the God who loves me, and work against the anxiety in my life by living authentically before Him. In these ways I'll develop the heart of Hannah.

As I begin this day it is my prayer that I can keep God in the loop of the ins and outs of my life.

When do I hold onto things that hold no heavenly value?

How am I trying to handle things on my own instead of trusting God to solve my problems for me?

God. . .or not?

"There the Danites set up for themselves the idol,

and Jonathan son of Gershom,

the son of Moses,

and his sons were priests for the tribe of Dan

until the time of the captivity of the land.

They continued to use the idol Micah had made,

all the time the house of God was in Shiloh."

Judges 18:30-31

It seemed like a good idea at the time. After all, I didn't know any better. My husband and I put together the pieces in the way we thought the bookshelf should go. Without the instructions, we relied on our own experience of assembling kits, our background in using bookshelves and our opinion of how the finished product should look. After we completed the product we discovered several "extra" pieces. Obviously, our idea of how the shelves should be put together was different than what the creator of the furniture had intended.

This is similar to what happened to the tribe of Dan. Without a godly leader to teach them the ways of God, they relied on what seemed right to them. They ended up, then, with something that was different from what God intended. They had a form of godliness but it wasn't of God (2 Timothy 3:5). It looked like a legitimate religion and made them feel good, but they failed to seek God Himself, nor did they desire to know Him personally.

Not surprisingly, I often make this same mistake.

My Wisdom

I used my own rationale, reasoning to myself that if I followed the game trail I would be able to more easily negotiate the wooded terrain. What I didn't take into account, however, was the direction of travel. Deer don't mind if they wander through a neighbor's pasture or trespass onto land that belongs to someone else. Their only focus is to get from point A to point B. I, however, had a different goal; to explore the 10 acres of wooded land my family was considering purchasing. As a result, I got lost.

While it made sense to my way of thinking to follow this meandering path as a way to find my way through the dense forest, it didn't turn out very well in the end. I suddenly found myself in a cow pasture I didn't even know existed and I had to trek through a herd of cattle before making my way to the road and circle back around to where I started. Doing things my way was unsuccessful.

This is similar to what happens when I rely on my own insight, using my past experiences, background and reasoning to determine what I should do. The path I choose takes me far away from God. Consequently, if I want to do things God's way, I had better let Him lead.

This means placing my confidence in the Lord's wisdom, believing that He has a way through my present circumstances that I know nothing about. When I turn to Him, placing all my trust in His way, He will show me what I need to know when I need to know it (Proverbs 3:5-6).

It reminds me of the markers that indicate the borders of our property. In order to find the boundaries, I would only need to locate those markers buried a few inches under the ground. Without them, I don't know where my yard stops and my neighbor's begins. All that it takes for me to discover the property line is to locate those markers that have already been positioned.

Similarly, God has laid out a race for me to run, a way for me to go, a path for me to take (Hebrews 12:1). There is no need for me to figure out by myself what I should do with my life. Instead, I need only seek out the Lord and, according to His timetable, He will unveil the markers that make His way clear (Jeremiah 29:11-13).

I follow my own form of religion when I rely on my own understanding instead of seeking God's plan.

My Power

In my own strength I could only get the seat out to the van from where it was temporarily stored in our garage. Without my husband's help, though, I couldn't lift it into the vehicle and maneuver it back into place. I possessed the will to do so and I could see how the latches on the bottom of the seat were designed to clamp into the anchors mounted on the floor of the van. Without an outside source of power, however, I didn't have the strength to accomplish the task.

This is similar to my walk with the Lord. I may think I know what needs to be done, or I have an idea of how things should go according to what I can handle, but I limit myself to what I can naturally do. For instance, I may reject the idea that I could speak to a group of people because I get too nervous. Instead of relying on the God who made my mouth and can enable me to deliver His message, I only go by what I think I am capable of doing. In this way I limit God by my own weaknesses (Exodus 4:10-11).

Other times, I think that this is not the time to start the ministry God has placed on my heart. After all, I reason, my life is too busy right now; I don't want to spread myself too thin. Unfortunately, what I am failing to realize is that if God gave me a job to do, it is His strength that will accomplish the work, not my own. Therefore, it doesn't matter if I'm poured out until I'm empty because God's power never runs out (Isaiah 40:28-29).

Then there are the times when I limit God to what I think I'm able to do. Instead, God has amazing things to show me where He will prove that His arm is not too short (Numbers 11:23).

I follow my own form of religion when I limit God to what I can do instead of remembering that His power within me is able to accomplish far more (Ephesians 3:20).

My Love

Despite my efforts, the duck pond I excavated as a child drained quickly. No matter how much water I added to the hole, it promptly drained out, leaving my ducks nowhere to swim. This reminds me of my own ability to love; it is shallow and easily exhausted. God's love, on the other hand, never runs out (1 Corinthians 13:7, 13, Psalm 136).

If I attempt only the acts of kindness that are within my own shallow ability to love, then, I am refusing to give God free reign to love. Instead of letting His perfect love flow through me uninhibited, I kink the hose, cutting off the stream. I manufacture a counterfeit religion based on my own ideas of love.

This happens when I put pressure on myself to respond to the cranky clerk with a soft answer, knowing it will turn away wrath (Proverbs 15:1). If she keeps pushing my buttons, however, my own well of love will soon grow dry and I'll snap, giving her a piece of my mind. Instead, a genuine ability to love will only come forth when I surrender my desire to be treated with respect and let God show me the hurt that lies beneath her harsh words. Then, as I take on the Lord Jesus Christ, He will respond through me with a level of compassion and understanding she has never before experienced (Romans 13:14).

Sometimes I attempt to love those who have been forgotten. As I distribute the meals to the homeless, I smile warmly, attempting to show them how much I care. Soon, however, I tire of the exercise and want to get back to my side of town. Instead, if I were to let God have His way, letting go of my own agenda, I'd soon find a genuine desire to personally get to know each person passing through the line, discovering a new-found acceptance of them as His image bearers.

I also make up my own form of religion when I try to reach out to my neighbors by a sense of obligation, knowing I am to be salt and light in a dark world. Every time I hear the foul language spring forth from their mouths, however, and see the way they neglect their children, my efforts to show kindness draws to a close. If I were to give up my tendency to point out their flaws, however, and simply let God remind me how much they need Jesus just like I do, I would not be able to fathom the compassion that flows out to them.

I follow my own form of religion when I attempt to love others in the way I think I should instead of letting God perfectly love them through me (1 John 4:7-8).

While I may think it ridiculous that the tribe of Dan worshiped an image and thought they were doing right, I often set up my own form of religion and think it honors God. Unfortunately, when I rely on my own wisdom, power and love, my attempts are proved a fraud. If I want to follow God, I must do it His way. Otherwise, I will find myself following a god that is not at all the One I seek.

As I begin this day it is my prayer that I can stay true to what God teaches in His Word.

When do I rely on my own understanding to try to negotiate the potholes of life instead of depending on God?

How am I making up things as I go instead of following the path God has marked out for me?

Passover For All

because of a dead body or are away on a journey,

they are still to celebrate the Lord's Passover. . .

A foreigner residing among you

is also to celebrate the Lord's Passover

in accordance with it's rules and regulations.

You must have the same regulations

for both the foreigner

and the native born."

Numbers 9:10,14

In Upper New York Harbor stands a lady who welcomes all who dream of a better life in America. If I were to visit Liberty Island and stand at her base, I would read the following:

"Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,

I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"*

America has always been known as the land of opportunity, a country open to refugees and legal immigrants no matter their race, color or creed. While this open-door policy can bring with it a host of problems and makes us vulnerable in many ways, there is always a sense of compassion for those who are suffering that drives us toward such a belief.

In an even greater way, the Body of Christ welcomes all who have no family, regardless of background, family lineage or reputation. The Lord is a God of standards, but He makes a way for all to enter into relationship with Him through Jesus Christ.

In the same way that God allowed all to celebrate the Passover in Old Testament times as a way for His people to remember His mighty salvation from the hand of the Egyptians, so He has made a way for all to receive salvation from condemnation for our sins through faith in Jesus Christ (John 3:17-18). Therefore, I could say that the cross of Christ is the great equalizer, making the ground level for any who profess a faith in Him.

Unclean

She couldn't seem to break away from the destructive habit of linking herself with dangerous men.

For him, alcohol was his savior; serving to numb him against the disappointment that his life had turned out to be.

This couple lived a risky life out on the street, making their home in a patch of woods behind a couple of warehouses. Their's was a life of sleeping with one eye open, fighting to survive and constantly searching for the means to buy their next case of beer. They both longed for more, but lacked the power to break free from their addictions.

Meanwhile, an abundant life is at their fingertips, waiting to be tasted through faith in Jesus Christ (John 10:10, Psalm 34:8). While the world may say their's is a hopeless case, tossing them aside as so much refuse, God says they are His precious children (1 John 3:1).

I often feel unworthy of such extravagant, abundant love! Through faith in Jesus Christ, however, the miracle lies in the fact that the extraordinary gift of salvation comes with a steep price which has already been paid by blood of Jesus Christ on the cross at Calvary(1 Corinthians 7:23). There is nothing I can do to deserve this gift, which means I must learn to accept my admittance into His kingdom by faith. Since I didn't earn it, neither can I lose it through my own failures and weaknesses. My position as His child is secure (Romans 8:38-39).

Therefore, I can live joyfully, despite my own wretched heart. I can boldly approach His throne of grace to receive the mercy I need to get through each moment, not based on what I've accomplished or deserve, but solely on what Jesus has already done (Hebrews 4:16).

Even though God expects perfection, my unclean heart can still find refuge in His kingdom through faith in Jesus Christ.

Foreigner

She grew up in the church and was familiar with all the Christian ways. As a girl, she thought her place in heaven was secure because she was born into a family of faith. Her dad, a devout believer in Jesus Christ and long-time pastor of a country church, sensed his daughter's mistaken belief. He told her, "You must come to Christ on your own. You can't rely on me to get you into God's kingdom. I will not always be here to remind you of this truth."

The teenage girls confidently replied, "Daddy, I'm just gonna stand by your grave and when you are called up into heaven, I'll grab onto your coattails and go with you!"

While this may sound ridiculous, it is easy to think I'm right with God based on my familial affiliation. Either I was born into a family who trusts in Jesus as their Savior, or I am a part of a vibrant congregation who worships the one true God. In the words of Billy Sunday, early 20th century evangelist, "Going to church doesn't make you a Christian anymore than going to a garage makes you an automobile."

No matter what family I am born into, or what nationality with which I am identified, or where I go to church, I have the same chance as anyone else to become part of the family of God. All it takes is simple faith in the message of the cross (Romans 1:16).

Even though God only saves His own, I can become His child firmly rooted in His kingdom through faith in Jesus Christ, no matter my heritage.

Late Bloomer

I was puzzled at the sight of an azalea blooming in late summer. It had been my experience that these colorful blooms helped usher in the new life of spring, but never before had I seen them blossom in the heat of the summer.

In the same way that these azaleas could be called late bloomers, I often think of myself as the same. I can be stubborn when it comes to following God's ways and slow to accept the place God has positioned me. It is easy to waste precious time as I fight God as He performs the transformation process in my life, opting instead to obstinately prefer my own comfortable ways (Romans 12:2).

Still, God loves me. He may not be able to use me until I bend to His will, but my place in His family is not dependent upon my compliance. It may take me awhile to come around, but God is patient with me, leading me forward one step at a time until I fully place myself in His hands.

If God gave me what I deserved, I would be on death row, marching toward an eternity separated from His goodness (Psalm 103:10, Romans 6:23). Instead, He gives me eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ. Not only that, I need not fear bowing to His authority in my life because He is a loving Master.

Even though God expects His people to live holy lives, my security in His kingdom is not dependent upon my performance but solely upon Christ's obedience.

I worship a God who has high standards. It is easy, then, to assume my own unclean state, my inferior lineage or heritage, or my stubborn heart would leave me out in the cold. Thankfully, however, this is not the case. Instead, I find safe harbor in His kingdom through faith in Jesus Christ no matter my performance, station in life or difficulty in bending my will to His. The Lord is a God who has provided a way for all to have the opportunity to live for Him.

As I begin this day it is my prayer that I can realize the grace of God that places my feet firmly upon His rock of salvation.

When do I hold back from truly trusting God wholeheartedly because of my own feelings of unworthiness?

How do I assume I don't belong to God's family since I have no heritage of faith?

The Choice

"But if you refuse to serve the LORD,

then choose today whom you will serve.

Would you prefer the gods your ancestors served

beyond the Euphrates?

Or will it be the gods of the Amorites

in whose land you now live?

But as for me and my family,

we will serve the LORD."

Joshua 24:15 NLT

It was a horrible choice to face. The young Polish mother was sent to Auschwitz concentration camp with her two young children. Upon arrival, she was forced to choose whether it would be her son or her daughter who would be killed in the gas chambers. Only one would be allowed to live, and in their cruelty, the Nazi guards compelled the mother to elect who would survive.

While my decision is not as heart-wrenching as this one depicted in the 1982 movie, "Sophie's Choice," I do have a clear choice to make. In the same way that Joshua presented a choice to the people of Israel as to who they would serve, the Lord their God or the foreign gods, I have a similar decision to make. I must be careful, though, not to do as the Israelites did: They claimed to choose God, but also stubbornly clung to their old gods. Joseph warned them to let go or God would turn from them and do them harm (v 20).

I must take this warning to heart and avoid giving my preference lip service. When asked, "Whom today will I serve?", the answer I give must be sincere.

Foreign gods

He was nothing if not ambitious. He felt pretty secure in his efforts, certain that his self-discipline in following the law would save him. Still, he couldn't be sure. So, the young man asked the Teacher as he passed through town.

"What is it I need to do to be saved?"

Jesus answered, "Well, if you insist on being saved by what you do, the requirement is this: Continually and perfectly follow the commandments."

"I'm in good standing, then, because all my life I have followed the commands you specified."

"Well then, if you truly want spiritual maturity, here is what you must do: Sell all you have and follow me."

This was a choice the wealthy young man was unwilling to make so he went away that day with a heavy heart. The rich young ruler, while zealous in his quest to earn his way to heaven, didn't treasure Jesus enough to choose Him above all else (Paraphrased from Matthew 19:16-22).

I am not so different from this young man; there is so much I value more than Jesus. It could be worldly success which seems so important, my own self-interests that constantly stay before me, the pursuit of enough money to pay my bills and have a little left over to feel secure in the future, the hobbies or pastimes which are said to be healthy and beneficial; I am constantly faced with idols that I willingly worship.

In order to put away these captivating gods, I will need to purposefully turn away from them. This means I could have to change my career goals so they line up more closely with God's plan for my life (Proverbs 3:5-6). I may also need to do a daily inventory of my heart, asking God to show me what is honoring to Him and what is simply there to motivate me to please myself (Psalm 139:23-24).

While it is commendable to live in a fiscally responsible way, if I am looking to money to provide for my needs, I must instead rely on my heavenly Father who knows how to perfectly supply what is required for my life (Matthew 6:31-33). It might also be necessary for me to ask of what I am unwilling to let go, no matter how good these pursuits might seem (Proverbs 14:12). Anything that gets between me and God, holds more weight than Him, or demands more attention than does the Lord is an idol.

If I am to make the choice to follow Jesus, it is only an authentic choice if I put away any other gods.

The Lord our God

Amateur wrestling does not allow any maneuver that could cause bodily harm, whether intentional or not. This includes full nelsons, forceful trips, headlocks, pulling a thumb or less than four fingers, or anything that restricts breathing or circulation. The rules are there to protect the competitors and make sure everyone has the same chance to win.

A contest that excludes these kind of prohibitions is called a "no-holds-barred match." As you can imagine, anything goes in these kind of bouts. While I am not here to promote wrestling, or any other sport for that matter, there is a mindset found in this kind of competition that I can take on in my own walk with Jesus.

Instead of prohibiting certain acts of service, or proclaiming specific areas of my life as off-limits to God, a no-holds-barred approach would give Him complete access. This means I would be willing to let God have His way in my life, letting Him choose my footsteps instead of me trying to be in control of my own destiny. While this kind of submission is not something that happens overnight, if He is Lord, I will see more of a desire to let Him lead as time goes by.

When I say I love God wholeheartedly but refuse to let go of the hurt a friend has caused, I am placing that area of my life off-limits to God. If I say I will follow Jesus with everything I have, except if it means sacrificing my own welfare and comfort, then my proclamation is not sincere. While I may mean it when I say that Jesus is Lord of my life, I can't make that claim sincerely if I'm angry about the suffering that sometimes is necessary for my sanctification. Thankfully, God leads us deeper and deeper into full and complete surrender as we grow in our relationship with Him.

If I am to make the choice to follow Jesus, it is only an authentic choice if I submit more and more to Him as the days go on.

It is easy to say I will serve the Lord this day, but the choice I make is really made with my actions, not my words. If it is to be a real choice, I will turn away from anything that distracts from the Lord, and I will wholeheartedly serve Him, taking a no-holds-barred approach. While I may not perfectly live this out as Jesus did, my desire to do so is what matters to God. In these ways, the choice I make will be apparent to anyone who is watching me live my life as they see the indwelling Spirit of God at work in me.

As I begin this day, it is my prayer that the choice I make will honor God.

When do I say I want Jesus to be Lord, but withhold certain areas of my life from Him?

How am I worshiping idols in the way I spend my time?

Why?

"When the angel of the LORD appeared to Gideon,

he said,

'The LORD is with you, mighty warrior.'

'Pardon me, my lord,' Gideon replied,

'but if the LORD is with us,

why has all this happened to us?

Where are all his wonders that our ancestors

told us about when they said,

"Did not the LORD bring us up out of Egypt?"

But now the LORD has abandoned us

and given us into the hand of Midian.'"

Judges 6:12-13

I hear it all the time, and you probably do too. In fact, maybe you've wondered this as well. "If God is such a good God, why did He let such evil happen?" It's a fair question. Gideon had similar doubts about the benefit of God's presence. He wanted to know what good it does for God to be with them if oppression and suffering still occurred. Maybe there's more to it than meets the eye.

Wake-Up Call

The harsh sound of the ringing phone assaulted our senses, waking up our entire family of six. "Sheesh, that wake-up call could raise the dead!" I mumbled, grumpy from the early-morning racket.

"Well, you did say you didn't want us to sleep through our alarm this morning," my husband graciously reminded me as he stepped into the bathroom of our hotel room.

"Yes, but neither did I want to pull a muscle in my neck!" I grumbled, rubbing the throbbing area just above my pajama collar.

In the same way that it sometimes takes a loud alarm to wake me from a sound sleep, God often resorts to using difficult circumstances to draw me back to Him, waking me up from the kind of stupor that comes from mindlessly wandering away. When things are going well, I often drift away from Him, thinking I've got it all covered on my own. As soon as the temperature starts rising, so to speak, I can clearly see how much I need the Lord.

There are many ways I live my life as if I'm in a sound slumber. I push along, reaching for personal and professional goals that have nothing to do with God's intended purpose for my life (Ephesians 2:10). In my own way of thinking, it seems like a good thing to shoot for, but I foolishly neglected to include God in my decision-making process (Proverbs 14:12, Proverbs 3:5-6).

Other times I go through the motions of accomplishing all the good deeds I think a good Christian should do. I read my Bible, attend church, meet with other believers, and help others. Still, my heart feels cold as a stone (Isaiah 29:13).

Many times I'm at risk of forgetting the grace by which I draw each breath. As I walk further along the road, it's easy to slip onto the destructive path where rules become most important. I mistakenly think I can please God by upholding a high standard for myself, using my own strength to try to become more patient, loving, kind and gentle with each passing day. In reality, there is no fruit apart from Jesus (John 15:5, Galatians 5:22-23).

When I drift away from God, He will use whatever means possible to bring me back to Him.

Blinded

He healed the man born blind, but still the Jewish leaders would not believe. Instead of taking such a miracle as a sign Jesus was of God, they questioned the newly-sighted man, seeking to find the answers that would agree with their own faulty premise. Clearly, these Pharisees were blind (John 9).

I can be similarly blind, choosing to see only that which supports my own way of thinking. Instead of opening my mind to the unlimited possibilities of God's sovereign nature, I limit Him.

Despite all the miracles Moses witnessed God perform, he sometimes suffered from this same kind of spiritual blindness. When the people he so faithfully led out of Egypt began to complain about their circumstances once again, craving meat to supplement the constant supply of manna, God told Moses He would supply an overabundance of meat for them to eat. Apparently forgetting to whom He was talking, Moses said, "'Would they have enough if the flocks and herds were slaughtered for them? Would they have enough if all the fish in the sea were caught for them?' The LORD answered Moses, 'Is the LORD's arm too short? Now you will see whether or not what I say will come true for you'"(Numbers 11:22-23).

Sin tends to blind me to the truth. My flesh trains me to see with earthly eyes so that I only notice that which lines up with my own way of thinking. If I want to see God at work, then, I'll need to take on His perspective.

This means I must look at the big picture, keeping in mind that God has a master plan which includes using everything for my good (Romans 8:28). I might also find it necessary to focus only on the evidence of God's work in my life, surrendering all the potholes, obstacles and burdens to Him for safekeeping (Matthew 11:28, Exodus 33:14). In order to see the good God is doing, I'll also need to let Him be God, realizing I won't always understand everything that is happening (Isaiah 55:8-9). Instead, I must trust Him as sovereign over all things (Daniel 4:35).

When I am living in a state of spiritual blindness, I will no longer notice the benefits of God's presence in my life.

Fallen World

Cancer.

Divorce.

Accidents.

Chronic pain.

Sudden death.

People who love God with all of their heart, who have dedicated their lives to following Jesus, often suffer greatly.

Living in a fallen world is not what God intended for us. When He made all things at the beginning of time, He saw that His creation was good (Genesis 1:4, 10, 12, 18, 21, 25, 31). Then, sin entered the world. When Adam ate the fruit God forbade him to consume, death became a reality for all of mankind. It is only through Christ that we are delivered from such condemnation (Romans 5:12-21, John 3:17-18).

As a result of the destructive nature of sin, death is all around me. Weeds threaten to choke out the vegetables I so carefully cultivate. Everything moves toward a state of chaos and ultimately falls apart and disintegrates over time. By the age of forty, most people notice their eyesight failing in one way or another.

Relationships also fall victim to the effects of sin. Married people tend to drift away from each other. Children automatically rebel and challenge their parent's authority in one way or another. Friends find themselves at odds as each goes their separate ways.

Followers of Christ are not immune to the consequences of living in a fallen world.

It's easy to ask, "Why?" when things get difficult, wondering what good God is doing if He doesn't bother to protect me from the bad stuff. Hard times, suffering and pain, however, are not evidence that God has abandoned me. Instead, He could be using the very thing that brings me great heartache to draw me back to Him. It could also be that I'm not noticing all the good because I'm only looking at the bad. Other times, my difficulty could simply be the result of living in a fallen world. Whatever the reason for my pain, of one thing I can be sure: He is with me (Psalm 16:8-11)!

As I begin this day it is my prayer that I will replace "why?" with "Who?" The answer will then always be, "God."

"Now this man Micah had a shrine,

and he made an ephod and some household gods

and installed one of his sons as his priest.

In those days Israel had no king;'

everyone did as they saw fit."

Judges 17:5

He and his mother were forced to move away from their home, settling instead in Bethlehem within her clan of Judah. People had forgotten the ways of the Lord, neglecting to tithe. Therefore, this young man who had been set aside for service to the Lord by birthright could not provide for he and his mother (Numbers 18:20-24). Instead of staying put, then, they decided to return to the home of her youth. Life there was difficult without the provision of the people's required offerings.

So, one night, the young Levite crept away. Telling no one, he started his journey, looking for adventure and somewhere else to stay. Soon he came upon a man in Ephraim who had set up his own shrine. When the man living there in the hills found out the young wanderer was a Levite, he was ecstatic.

Micah used God by forming his own personal religion, employing the wandering Levite who was willing to be bought off. Both men received what they sought; the young sojourner found a home where his Levitical heritage was respected, and the homeowner was given the opportunity to legitimize his religion. I guess you could say it was a win-win arrangement.

Unfortunately, neither sought God's will in this situation. Instead, both were a kind of lone-wolf, using God to fulfill their own visions. While I may not go so far as to set up my own religion, I am in danger of going out on my own in some ways. Therefore, I would be wise to remember the characteristics of God.

Sovereignty of God

I make my plans then ask God's help to carry them out. I justify this risky way of living by telling myself that God must have given me these plans, or that the aspirations I have come from Him, or that He wants to help me make my dreams come true. After all, I rationalize, God wants me to be happy, doesn't He?

Unfortunately for me, I have a low view of God. He is not here for my benefit, to cater to my desires or to make me look good. How could the created lead the Creator (Isaiah 29:16)? Instead, God is sovereign over all things. He has a plan of which I know nothing, necessitating my connection to Him. If I don't seek Him out, I'll have no idea what He wants me to do (Jeremiah 29:11-13).

Living with a respect for God's sovereign nature means I'll recognize His lordship over every part of my life, hindering my natural tendency to do what seems right to me. Instead of following my own instincts or common sense, I'll seek out God in an effort to honor Him as King of my life (Proverbs 3:5-6).

Honoring God as sovereign also means I'll accept my place, embrace my calling and acknowledge the importance of the position in which He has placed me. While its easy for me to complain about my current circumstances, compare myself to others and come up short or yearn for something more, I will show respect for God's dominion in my life by making the most of who He has made me to be, right where He has placed me (Romans 9:19-20).

Revering God as the One who is in charge of all things means I'll remember how He can use every situation to bring about good. I can be sure He is right there with me, looking out for my own best interest, even when it doesn't feel good (Romans 8:28).

I honor God's sovereign nature when I let Him serve as Lord of my life instead of using Him as some kind of magic talisman that can get me what I want.

Holiness of God

The colors found in the desert rock formation reminded me of a sunset. Sudden movement off to the side caught my attention as a chipmunk scurried up a large stone, perching there while munching on a nut like a spectator watching a sporting event. A vulture circling above looking for prey gave me the impression of a car salesman making the rounds in his lot, trying to make a sale.

Everything in all of creation can be compared to something else with which I am familiar. Understanding comes when I measure the strange and unique against the common and recognizable. In this way I can comprehend what seems difficult or just plain different.

When I try to use this same exercise to help me understand God, however, I get myself in trouble. I attempt to compare the triune nature of God with the three forms of water: liquid, gas and solid. Unfortunately, this contrast is not perfect. Similarly, I may assess the fatherly nature of God as compared to my own earthly dad, leaving me with an inadequate description. Hearing that God is my Shepherd, I try fitting Him into the mold of one who leads sheep. While this gives me a good start to understanding His role as my Guide, it falls short of reaching the fullness of His nature.

Instead of trying to compare God to something in His creation, I must accept that I don't need to understand Him fully in order to follow Him. His ways are higher than mine and His thoughts far superior to anything my mind can drum up (Isaiah 55:8-9). Therefore, there are some things about God that I must accept by faith, reminding myself of His holy nature.

I recognize the holiness of God when I embrace Him and His ways as He teaches me, resisting my tendency to want to understand before I'll accept.

Relational Aspect of God

It wasn't so much that he didn't understand that bothered me. Rather, it was the fact that he didn't seem to care enough to try to find out what made me tick. When I was going through that marriage crisis, it was my husband's desire to grow closer to me that I craved the most.

I think we can all agree that the desire to be known and loved is as basic as the need for sustenance. For instance, while a baby may survive without being held, it will not thrive apart from some kind of affection. We all need connection with others who care for us.

Being made in God's image, it is apparent that this need for connection comes from our Maker. He desires relationship with me as His child and He wove this longing for Him within each one of us, although I often seek to fill this void with lesser things (Ecclesiastes 3:11). His desire for me is that I would share my heart with Him, depend upon Him to fulfill my every need and to love Him as He created me to love, seeking to know Him more each day through His holy Word.

This is apparent in the life of David who was known as a man after God's own heart even though he committed the worst of sins (Acts 13:22). It was his desire to do as God had commanded that drew Him closer to God. God knew that He could trust David with important missions, but also with tender truths that fall close to His heart.

Obedience is the outward manifestation of one's heart. If I am bent on doing things my own way, I will forsake the leading of the Lord and go off on my own. If, however, I am mostly concerned with my relationship with Him, I will be careful to do as He says, being unwilling to sacrifice my connection to Him just so I can get my way. In other words, preserving my relationship with the Lord weighs heavily on every decision I make.

I show my understanding of God's heart when I place my relationship with Him above everything else, seeking to grow closer to Him more and more with each passing day.

In the same way that Micah came up with his own form of religion, I am guilty of doing the same, using God to try to get what I want, thinking I can completely fathom His ways, and seeking to impress Him with my dependable service. If I want to guard against these common mistakes, I must remember God's sovereign and holy nature as well as His highest desire for me to build my relationship with Him. In these ways, I'll avoid the pitfalls of Micah and cease using God for my own benefit.

As I begin this day it is my prayer that I can trust God enough to do what He says even if I don't understand what He's doing.

Choose Wisely

what right have you to take it over?

Will you not take what your god Chemosh gives you?

Likewise,

whatever the LORD our God has given us,

we will possess.'"

Judges 11:23-24

Choices. I am faced with dozens of choices each day. What time will I get up? How will I spend my time? What should I wear? What sounds good for breakfast? Which route do I take to get to my destination? While most of the decisions I make are not earth-shattering, each does have a consequence attached to it. If I decide to hit the snooze on the alarm, I will have less time to get ready. If I choose short sleeves, I could get cold. If I pick the wrong route, I might be late.

These consequences may be reversible while others are permanent. There is a choice I make, however, that is earth-shattering. The consequences of this decision permeates every part of my life. Many times, the outcome is unavoidable. Do I follow God or do I commit to my own way? Whichever path I choose, I must accept the outcome as the cost of making that decision.

When I walk according to my own flesh, doing what seems best to me and what most satisfies myself, I will produce fruit that reflects my choice. I can't expect good fruit that comes from God's Spirit when I insist on doing things my way (Galatians 5:16-22). Therefore, I must choose wisely and accept what follows.

Temptation

The aroma of baking bread drew me in. I followed the heavenly scent, walking into the kitchen in time to see my daughter removing the loaves from the oven. "Yum! That smells so good." I could not resist sampling a piece, slathering butter on the piping hot slice before savoring the flavor that delivered such satisfaction. I could not resist the temptation of eating the freshly-baked bread.

It's hard to say "no" to something so good. I simply don't have what it takes to stand firm against such a sensory assault! This weakness of mine does not stop with food, however. My own power of will is no match for the draw of my flesh. I am sinful by nature and can't help but give in to its lure. If I choose to follow my flesh, I will not be able to stand against the strong attraction that comes from within.

The apostle Paul put it this way: "For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do--this I keep on doing" (Romans 7:18-19). No matter how hard I try, I will not be able to resist temptation when making the decision to follow my own flesh. There is no way around this consequence.

What hope do I have, then? Plenty! Through faith in Jesus Christ, I have the option of following Him and tapping into the power His Spirit supplies to stand firm against temptation. Instead of giving in, I will have the ability to turn away, taking the way out He so graciously provides (1 Corinthians 10:13).

When I follow my own path I will discover that I am helpless to stand firm against sin, but when walking in the power of the Spirit I will find success in my quest to resist the temptations of my flesh.

Discord

Worry and anxiety filled her heart. Wherever she went, trouble seemed to follow. It appeared as if she couldn't go anywhere without getting into an argument with someone or falling into some kind of trouble. Not surprisingly, it wasn't long before she ended up in jail.

While I may not have it so badly, I do experience strife and discord when I choose my own way. If my own reputation and desire to be right is what drives me, I will stand my ground, making sure I get the last word. Nothing anyone says will make a difference to my way of thinking when I am so set in my ways.

Likewise, if it is my ambition in life to reach the lofty goals I have set, I will work hard, letting nothing get in my way. As a result, I will have zero tolerance for people who prevent me from going where I want to go, developing a cold heart to the suffering that is all around me. My only focus will be on me and my own aspirations.

Similarly, if controlling every aspect of my life and the lives of those I love is my main concern, I will be consumed with such an overwhelming job. Never will I be able to rest as I deal with all the details that are constantly coming to light.

Peace will only come when I choose to follow the Shepherd who loves me (Psalm 23). Doing so will bring about harmony that is only the result of being right with God through faith in Jesus Christ (Romans 5:1). When I stop fighting against the work of His Spirit in my life, I will find myself enjoying the peace He has promised (Romans 12:2, Psalm 85:8).

When I follow my own path I will experience nothing but strife while choosing to walk with Jesus will bring about peace.

Unchecked Anger

It always seemed to simmer just below the surface. No matter what the circumstances, I couldn't shake the feeling of annoyance and bitterness that stuck around like a constant companion. The slightest irritation would frustrate me. I couldn't get a handle on what I thought was an anger problem.

What I later learned was that my insistence on living my way was tainting my heart. Even though I wanted to follow Jesus, I stubbornly stuck to my own path, refusing to let go of the fears, doubts and insecurities that plagued me. Whenever I thought about surrendering to Christ, something like panic would well up in me, encouraging me to set my own course instead of letting God choose for me.

Living in such a way led to a spirit of frustration as I found my life was not lining up with what I read in the Bible. As a result, anger was always ready to spring to life. Jealously often raised its ugly head as I compared myself to others, always falling short. I became envious of the fruit I saw in the lives of those around me. Anger defined my life.

As I discovered the freedom found in following Jesus, mustering up the courage to surrender more and more of my life to Him, serenity began to fill my heart. As I realized the depth of the love that God has for me, I trusted Him more and more each day, coming to appreciate the tender way He leads me through each challenge. Before long, I noticed the familiar feeling of frustration rarely showing itself, replaced instead by contentment and a sense of security in my identity as God's well-loved child.

When I choose to go my own way I may find myself defined by anger, but surrendering to the way of the King will result in tranquility.

There are consequences for every choice I make; some are good while others are bad. As a result, I would be wise to choose to follow Jesus, resulting in the production of fruit that will last. If I insist on my own way, however, I will experience temptation that cannot be resisted, a life defined by discord, and anger that runs unchecked. Instead of simply doing what comes naturally, then, I must be careful to choose wisely.

As I begin this day it is my prayer I will wisely choose to follow Jesus.

Chink in my Armor

"One day Samson went to Gaza,

where he saw a prostitute.

He went in to spend the night with her.

The people of Gaza were told,

'Samson is here!'

So they surrounded the place

and lay in wait for him all night at the city gate.

They made no move during the night,

saying, 'At dawn we'll kill him.'"

Judges 16:1-2

Samson, like all humans, had many flaws. One was his weakness for women. As he succumbed to temptation one day, failing to detect the trap into which he was stepping, he sought out a prostitute. In so doing, he made himself vulnerable to his enemies who were bent on his destruction.

I, too, have an Enemy who seeks to steal, kill and destroy (John 10:10). His whole mission is to take away the peace that rules my heart through Christ Jesus, to damage my relationship with the Lord so I cease to live the abundant, purposeful life, and to wipe out the confidence I have in the God who will never let me down.

When I give in to the sin which lures me, I open myself up to attack from the Enemy, making myself vulnerable to his schemes (1 Peter 5:8, Genesis 4:6-7). Even though Satan has no hold on me, I give him a foothold when I yield to the sin that seems so attractive to my flesh (Ephesians 4:27). Then, there is much that I lose.

Peace

As I sat by the river watching the slow-moving water, I could feel the stresses of life melt away. Birds sang praises to their Maker, lifting up their voices in sweet harmony. A cooling breeze gently set the trees to swaying, adding to the composition that delighted my senses. Dappled light painted a beautiful design at my feet as the sunlight filtered through the leaves above my head. This place delivered a sense of peace to my soul.

While its nice to sit and enjoy such a serene setting, its not always possible to take time out of each day to do so. Thankfully, surrendering to the Lord delivers the same effect. When I let go of my desire to work out all the details of my life, fretting over how I will solve all my problems, peace floods my heart (Philippians 4:6-7).

Similarly, knowing that the blood of Jesus has covered all my sins, making me right with God, sets my mind at ease (Romans 5:1). I don't have to be perfect to enjoy the presence of my Father who loves me perfectly (Hebrews 4:16)! Guilt is not an issue when I know the depth of His love (1 John 4:16-18).

Unfortunately for me, this peace is often fleeting even though it is mine to keep. Satan knows how to push my buttons, drawing me into a state of worry or planting seeds of doubt about the security of my salvation. Once the thought is there, I easily glom onto it, letting the destructive thought pattern take me where it wants to go. Soon the calm I once enjoyed is gone, leaving behind nothing but trouble.

If I want to protect the peace that comes from trusting in Jesus as my Lord and Savior, I must not give Satan a foothold by giving into temptation.

Purpose

From the time she was a little girl she knew what she wanted to do with her life. From that point on, everything she did was with that goal in mind. Nothing could distract her from her God-given purpose.

Each believer has a specific purpose; a job for which they were created (Ephesians 2:10). When I seek God's will for my life, He reveals that focus that He meant for me, giving me a reason to drive forward each day (Jeremiah 29:11-13). As I accept His calling, everything suddenly begins to make sense. Suffering is allowed into my life as part of the training necessary to prepare me for His use. I accept the bad along with the good, knowing that it all works together for my good and helps to propel me toward the purpose for which God has made me (Romans 8:28).

When I open myself up to the attacks of my enemy, however, this focus and drive is one of his targets. He aims to kill the plan God has for me, doing whatever he can to divert my attention away from it so I suddenly feel there is no reason for me to live. Or, he throws a wrench in the works with the hope that I will give up and forget about the good God has planned for my life.

Instead of living with an aim and a purpose, then, I begin to wander aimlessly, going after one pursuit followed by another. When one goal begins to lose its luster, I move onto another, never settling in for the long haul. My life takes on the characteristics of an aimless wanderer instead of as a purposeful athlete training for an important competition (1 Corinthians 9:24-27). Satan has killed my God-given purpose.

Thankfully, my calling is not gone, but I've only been fooled into thinking there is no reason for my pitiful life. Jesus, however, can restore that purpose as I keep my eyes on Him. Staying focused on Him enables me to run my race with purpose as I let go of all that distracts me from that single objective (Hebrews 12:1-2).

If I want to retain the sense of purpose I've been given as a child of God through faith in Jesus Christ, I must not give Satan a foothold by giving into temptation.

Faith

Each day was a carbon-copy of the one before. Pain ruled her life, limiting her ability to care for herself. She felt as helpless as a newborn baby. Was this what God meant for her life? Did He even care about her suffering? She began to wonder if God even existed. And if He did, why didn't He do something to help her?

Pain and suffering has a way of destroying faith. Where once I believed God was capable of anything and I had full confidence in His goodness, sovereignty and power, misery and agony can wipe out that belief.

While God can use hard times like this to grow my faith and proving it as authentic, Satan's goal is to destroy my belief in God as my Helper and Source of comfort (James 1:2-4, Job 1:9-11). If I begin to question God's goodness, wondering if He really has my best interest at heart, Satan thinks he's won the battle. What he (and I as I'm swept along by his lies) fails to realize , however, is the power of Christ that is within me, giving me the upper hand in this war (1 John 4:4).

I have been given armor to protect me from the schemes of my enemy. One of these pieces of protective gear is a shield to ward off the flaming arrows of the devil. This important safeguard is made up of my faith (Ephesians 6:16). If Satan can destroy my shield, he thinks he's won the battle.

Instead of giving into the temptation that my enemy puts in my path, then, I must act as a soldier and quickly raise up my shield, using it to safeguard against what seduces me away from the path of righteousness.

When hard times come my way, instead of focusing on the suffering, I must remember my position as a soldier in a war and refresh my memory of all the good that will come from standing firm in my faith (Romans 5:3-5).

When trouble enters into my life, in the place of blaming God for what is unbearable for me, I can hold fast to the truth that I have been presented with a great opportunity to taste the compassion God has for me as I allow Him to give me comfort (2 Corinthians 1:3-4).

When I'm faced with the impossible, I must not let down my guard, strengthening my firm stance with the truth that nothing is impossible with God (Luke 1:37).

If I want to stand firm in the faith I have in Jesus Christ, I must not give Satan a foothold by giving into temptation.

I often forget how vulnerable to attack I am and simply live in a way that pleases me. When I follow my own flesh, I open myself up to the work of my enemy. If I want to remain firm in my walk with the Lord, then, it is important that I guard against Satan's schemes. Taking the way out when temptations come will allow me to retain the peace that guards my heart and mind, protect the purpose God has for my life, and to keep my faith in Him who is able to do more than I could ever imagine. In these ways, I can avoid developing a chink in my armor.

As I begin this day it is my prayer that I can stand firm in my faith, keeping aware of my enemy who is constantly on the prowl.

God's Commission

"Moses my servant is dead.

Now then,

you and all these people,

get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land

I am about to give them--to the Israelites.

I will give you every place where you set your foot,

as I promised Moses. . .No one will be able to stand

against you all the days of your life.

As I was with Moses,

so I will be with you;

I will never leave you nor forsake you."

Joshua 1:2,3,5

As much as I didn't care for our newly elected leader, I was touched by the thought that such a change of command could take place so peacefully. Despite the spirit of opposition that exists among our elected leaders and the arguments that regularly take place between them, this country still enjoys a peaceful transfer of power. The history books as well as the international news is full of stories where kings were deposed, rebels forcefully took power or the people rose up against an unpopular ruler. Thankfully, this is not the case in the United States.

Similarly, the death of Moses could have been a tumultuous time for the nation of Israel. They had been faithfully led out of Egypt and through their desert wanderings for forty years by one man and he was the one through whom God had spoken to the masses. They depended upon Moses. It must have been a scary thought, then, to enter into the unknown of this Promised land without Moses at the helm. God, however, planned for a smooth transition and had chosen the one who would take the place of their great leader upon his death.

Just as God sent forth Joshua to lead His people, He is also commissioning me for His work (Ephesians 2:10). Therefore, there are some truths the Lord taught Joshua which I will need to take to heart.

Courageous

He was a legendary general who led the Confederate troops during the civil war. As a man of faith, he believed his destiny was set by God, giving him a bold persona on the battlefield. Thus, Thomas Jonathan Jackson was given the nickname "Stonewall."

While you would probably never catch me walking around such a dangerous place as a war zone, I can boldly commit to following God's lead, courageously dong things I never thought I'd be able to do. How can I possibly live in such a way? I can walk fearlessly into the unknown because I know without a doubt that God is with me.

In the same way that God reassured Joshua with the thought that He would go with him, I can take heart by the same promise. Before Jesus ascended into heaven, He left His disciples with the promise that I can grab hold of as well. He said, "I am with you always, even to the end of the age" (Matthew 28:20).

Therefore, if this ever-present God of absolute power is for me, who can stop His plan for me from coming to fruition (Romans 8:31)? My Enemy can try to discourage me, duping me into believing I am without hope when in reality I have the hope of eternity secured by faith in the blood of Jesus (Titus 1:1-3). The weakness of my flesh can lead me to believe I cannot accomplish the mission to which God has called me when in reality God's power is manifested in me because of this frailty (2 Corinthians 12:9-10). The world can seem like it's closing in on me, enticing me to give in to its tempting ways, but God is ready to transform my thinking to give me a clearer view of His will if I would only cooperate with Him (Romans 12:2).

In the same way that Joshua was instructed to be strong and courageous, so I am given the same boldness of spirit in the job God has prepared for me to do (Joshua 1:6, 2 Timothy 1:7).

Pursue Righteousness

I love watching the Olympics. It is not so much the competition and the metal count that gives me such a desire. Rather, it is the inspiring stories of personal struggles and triumphs that draws me to tune in each night.

While I do love a physical challenge and am spurred on by the athletes' dedication and self-discipline, it is the spiritual call to run the race laid out for me that inspires me as of late (Hebrews 12:1). In order for these athletes to compete at such a high level, their dedication to training must be strong: They must eat, sleep and breathe their sport. There is a level of laser-sharp focus that few of us can truly understand.

If I want to walk with Jesus, however, I am called to adopt a similar attitude. Instead of simply going through the motions, I am to actively pursue right living, disciplining myself to turn away from what comes naturally and pursue faith, love and peace with others which is quite unnatural to me (2 Timothy 2:22). This kind of life takes dedication to God and His ways. It will not come without some effort, but takes purposeful training, similar to what it takes for the Olympic athletes to reach such an elite competitive level (1 Corinthians 9:24-27).

It is important to note as well, that this kind of discipline to staying the course will not earn eternal life for me. Salvation is a free gift given by a loving and gracious God that is secured through Christ's sacrifice on the cross (Ephesians 2:8-9). Instead, this life-long process of sanctification is one in which I must take part, cooperating with God as He transforms me into the woman He created me to be (Romans 12:2).

When I read His Word, then, it cannot be taken lightly, mindlessly going through the motions so I can check the task off my daily list of things-to-do. Instead, I must search for the meaning found there, applying it to my heart and letting God use it to teach me His ways, rebuke my actions, correct my thoughts, and train me to live purely (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

When I am tempted to give into my selfish urges, I must stand firm, purposefully choosing to turn toward God and His righteous ways (James 4:4-10). When I get distracted from the race I am running, wasting time in mindless pursuits or veering off the path in an effort to gratify a sensual pleasure, I must keep my eyes on Jesus who joyfully pursued the prize that was set before Him, enduring torture and death on a cross in order to reach this goal of obedience (Hebrews 12:2).

In the same way that Joshua was instructed to stay the path, so I am given this same command to keep on the straight and narrow (Joshua 1:7, Matthew 7:14).

Resist Fear

It is perhaps the most common phrase uttered by God, "Do not fear." He often sent His heavenly messengers to spur His people on, reminding them not to give in to this common emotion. Fear is deadly because it can cripple my forward progress, paralyze my faith and blur my thinking.

I remember getting stuck at the top of a 15-foot cargo-net wall while testing out an obstacle course. As the netting shifted beneath my feet, I tried the power of positive thinking to picture myself throwing my leg over the narrow board and descending successfully down the other side. Unfortunately, the instability of my position only fed my fear of heights. Regretfully, I found I could not move my leg to follow what my mind so optimistically imagined so I ended up retreating back down the way I came.

Fear had prevented me from carrying out the goal I had set for myself; to climb over that wall. In a similar way, fear can work against faith, keeping me from answering the call God has placed on my life.

It could be that the guilt of my sin weighs heavily upon me, deceiving me into thinking God will not empower me to live His way because of my sin. The ensuing fear of His wrath, then, prevents me from walking the path He has laid out for me. Who do I think I am, anyway? How could I love others when I'm such a failure at loving myself (1 John 4:18)? In my delusion, I'm forgetting the forgiveness I have in Jesus Christ and the resulting overwhelmingly conquering power of God Who lives within.

Maybe I doubt God's ability to prevail when I take note of the direction my life is taking. How could anything good come out of such I mess, I wonder. Instead, I can stand firm in the knowledge that God holds the blueprint for my life and His way will prevail (Jeremiah 29:11-13).

Other times I could feel the weight of the world on my shoulders, mistakenly thinking I've been left all alone to bear such burdens. In reality, however, He is calling me to lay my burdens at His feet, taking strength from His very presence (Matthew 11:28).

In the same way that Joshua was instructed to resist fear, so I am given this same command to let God's presence inspire greatness (Joshua 1:9, Philippians 4:4-7).

I sometimes feel God has given me a tall order to fill. Instead of getting discouraged, however, and give up, I can take to heart the instructions given to Joshua. I can live boldly and courageously, pursue righteousness and resist the temptation to let fear rule my life. All because of the Lord's faithful presence in my life, I'll be able to fulfill His commission.

As I begin this day it is my prayer that I can keep my eyes on Jesus, the only hope I have to stay on the straight and narrow.

Testing God's Patience

"'Yet you have forsaken Me and served other gods;

therefore I will deliver you no more.

Go, cry to the gods you have chosen;

let them deliver you in your time of distress.'"

Judges 10:13-14 AMP

They were chosen out of all the peoples of the earth to be His treasured possession (Deuteronomy 7:6). There was nothing about them that set this nation apart from anyone else, nothing that drew the Creator of all things to them in particular. Instead, it was His purposes that drove Him to make that long-ago promise to their father Abraham, creating a covenant that He could not break (Genesis 12:2-3, Genesis 15). Still, out of all that God had done for the people of Israel, they tested His patience, failing to stay faithful to Him and turning to other gods.

Similarly, I did not choose Jesus, but He chose me (John 15:16, John 6:37, John 17:2). God opened my eyes to my need for Him, my utter helplessness to save myself, and drew me to Jesus, opening my heart to receive Him as my Lord and Savior (John 6:44, Romans 8:28-30). As I did, I experienced His great love, and realized my own wretchedness. It was then that I understood God's great patience (2 Peter 3:9).

God did not send Jesus to convict me, dooming me to eternal suffering and giving me what I rightfully deserve because of my sins. Instead, Jesus came to save me, delivering me from what is inevitable and giving me what I cannot earn; eternal life and a restored relationship with a heavenly Father who adopts me into His family as His precious child (John 3:16-17,1 John 3:1). Still, out of all that God has done for me, I test His patience, failing to stay faithful to Him and turning to other gods.

He is patient, waiting for me to come around, giving me a chance to see my sin and repent. He gives me more chances than I deserve, yet still I test His patience in more ways than I realize.

Take for Granted

I assumed he would always be there. I noticed all his quirks and irritating ways, pointing out what needed improvement. Seldom did I thank him for his willingness to work hard, his faithfulness to me and his desire to take care of me. Instead, I took these good traits for granted, assuming he would always be there for me to kick around.

As the wife of a soldier, there were many times when I would come to the above conclusion after my husband had left on deployment, willingly placing himself in harm's way in order to fulfill His commitment to his country. I often took for granted the blessings I'd been given until it wasn't there any more. Then, in his absence, I would suddenly be aware of how good I had it.

It's easy to take those I love for granted, stubbornly refusing to cherish the moments I have as if they were fleeting. In the same vein, I also take God for granted, accepting his grace, mercy and love as if I deserve it, failing to realize the sacrifice Jesus made so I could enjoy such unmerited blessings.

If I did truly appreciate the lengths my Savior went to retrieve me from the depths of Hell, I would more easily put myself into His hands to allow Him to mold me into His image. Instead, I assume God will forgive me for my own stubbornness, continuing to insist on doing things my way, knowing that He will give me a pass. After all, I think, I'm only human. I'm not perfect and can't be expected to never fall.

While it is true that I cannot live a perfect life, my attitude is often wrong. If I truly understood how my sin offends my holy Father, I would not so easily accept it into my life, knowing that I'll be forgiven by a God who loves me. If I really realized how much Jesus went through so I could live a life free from guilt, I would not put so much pressure on myself to impress God with my efforts, taking for granted the grace that I seem to have missed. If the love of God really meant something to me, I would let it flow through me instead of hording it all for myself.

I often test God's patience when I take His precious gifts for granted instead of allowing Him to mold me into the woman He created me to be.

Unfaithful

Even though I had provided plenty of clean, well-maintained litter boxes throughout the house, our elderly cat still insisted on using the corner of the dining room as his personal bathroom. Whenever I caught him preparing to do his dirty deed, I would run him to the nearest litter box and he would willingly use it for its intended purpose. Obviously, he knew of its presence and how it was meant to be used, but he often chose to do it his way instead.

While its easy to feel angry at my cat for choosing such destructive behavior, I am not so different when it comes to God. He has shown me His goodness, demonstrating His love for me in the way He gave His own Son's life for me while I was His enemy because of my offensive sin, completely ignorant of my need of a Savior (Romans 5:8, 1 John 4:9). He faithfully provides for my needs, giving me what is necessary while protecting me from harm (Matthew 6:31-33, Psalm 121:7). His wisdom guides me through the toughest times of my life, making the path I must travel clear to me (Proverbs 3:5-6, James 1:5).

Still, I turn to other sources for answers when times get confusing, preferring that which I can see and hear over God's intervention which takes faith to trust (Proverbs 9:10). When it seems action is needed, I often prefer to do something rather than to sit back and give God a chance to work, justifying to myself that action is better than passivity (Isaiah 40:31). Even though I know God is the Father of compassion who best knows how to comfort me in times of trouble, I often prefer the tangible touch of a human who I turn to instead of letting God take me through the deep waters (Isaiah 43:1-7, 2 Corinthians 1:3).

God made me for Himself. When I arrogantly turn to my own ways instead of surrendering myself into His loving hands, I am missing out on all the good things God has saved up for me. As a Gentleman, God would never force me to submit to Him. Instead, He lovingly and patiently waits for me to willingly choose His life-giving way over my destructive approach. For the times when I turn to Him, I truly taste and see that the Lord is good (Psalm 34:8).

I often test God's patience when I turn to other sources to find the good things God has already prepared to give to me (1 Corinthians 2:9).

Refuse to Trust

Love those who persecute me.

Forgive.

Run after kingdom-pursuits, not worldly ones.

Treasure relationships not possessions.

Hold belongings with an open hand.

These are some of the commands of God with which I struggle. I often go my own way, hating my enemies, holding onto hurts, chasing success, valuing what I've worked so hard to attain more than anything else, and gripping my possessions as if they're what gives me security. I often refuse to trust God enough to obey Him.

God values my obedience more than anything else I can give Him (1 Samuel 15:22). Maybe its because when I do what He says, I am proving to Him that I trust Him. With my actions, I'm saying, "Lord, even though I may not agree with what you are telling me to do and I certainly don't understand Your ways, I trust you enough to do what You say despite my misgivings. Obeying You is more important than quenching my desire to comprehend or agree. I want to please You by living life Your way." Its amazing what a strong message my actions can deliver!

Therefore, when He impresses upon my heart the importance of turning the other cheek when I'm mistreated, I will trust in God's integrity enough to give up my desire to defend myself. Or, when He calls me to step forward into the darkness, defying my own common sense and longing to stay where things seem safe, I will trust in God's Sovereign plan enough to give up my desire to see what is to come. Or, when His way requires giving up my worldly possessions, I will trust enough in God's ability to give me more than I can ask or imagine and let go of what seems so valuable.

I often test God's patience when I don't trust Him enough to do as He says.

There is no doubt that God is a patient God. Time means nothing to Him as He waits for me to fall into step with Him. Still, I often take His goodness for granted, turn to other sources to receive what He so willingly gives, and refuse to trust Him enough to obey. In these ways, I test God's patience.

As I begin this day it is my prayer that I can trust God enough to let Him have His way this day.

Less is More

'You have too many men.

I cannot deliver Midian into their hands,

or Israel would boast against me,

"My own strength has saved me."'"

Judges 7:2

John the Baptist knew this truth well. He was created for a specific purpose; to prepare the way for the coming Messiah. Once he saw Jesus taking His rightful place as the chosen One, John declared the fulfillment of his purpose in saying, "He must become greater; I must become less" (John 3:30).

In the same way that John understood the importance of letting Jesus have supremacy, I must take on the same mindset if God is to get all the glory in my life. If I want to truly experience my purpose, He must become greater and I must become less. In the kingdom where Jesus reigns and I desire to dwell, less is considered to be more.

Confidence

"I wish I had a fraction of your confidence." I often say this to my dear husband who is overflowing with what I often lack. Even though I tease him about his boldness and self-assurance, I know it is not really in his own capabilities that he trusts. Instead, I know that my husband simply has faith in what God can do through him.

My problem is that I have a hard time getting over myself. I am not so different from Moses in this way. When he stood before the burning bush, receiving a powerful calling from God through a most extraordinary delivery method, Moses couldn't get over himself. Are You sure You've got the right guy? (Exodus 3:11) What if the people don't listen? I'm not one of them and I don't know what they call You! (v 13) What if they don't believe me? (Exodus 4:1) Each time, God reassured Moses, giving him the answer he needed or a sign to prove His purpose.

Then Moses got to the real issue: he didn't think he was capable of doing what God was asking him to do. I've never been good at speaking. I'll never be able to speak in a way that anyone will listen. I'll make a fool of myself! ( Exodus 4:10) Still, God calmly encouraged Moses with the truth that He made His mouth and was perfectly capable of giving him the ability to speak when the time came. Trust me, Moses. I'll be with you every step of the way (v 11-12).

Unfortunately, his own insecurity was too much. Moses just couldn't picture himself standing in front of all the people, delivering a message he feared he couldn't give. Please, can't you send someone else? This lack of faith angered God. Fine, I'll send your brother, Aaron, as your mouthpiece (v 13-17). I can relate.

If I could only grasp what the Apostle Paul seemed to understand: The weaker I am, the better. The less of me there is, the more of God there is. My own frailties are only an opportunity for God's strength to prevail (2 Corinthians 12:9).

In God's kingdom, the less able I am, the greater is the opportunity for God to shine.

Wisdom

I don't know enough to do this job. What if someone asks me a question I can't answer? What if no one else is there to lead and I am asked to step up? What if. . . what if. . . The "what ifs" often keep me from going where God is leading me. What I often fail to understand, though, is that less is more in God's kingdom.

I don't need to possess all the wisdom I think is necessary before I start doing what God is calling me to do. God is the One with all the understanding. If I trust Him enough to step out in faith, believing that He will equip me once I accept His calling on my life, I'll find Him faithful to supply what I need at just the right time (Proverbs 9:10). The only qualification necessary for doing what God wants me to do is to be connected to the Source of all good things (John 15:5).

As I value Him above everything else in my life, His Word will become like vital sustenance to my soul. I'll find that I can't begin the day without drinking in His living water. A deep hunger will arise that can only be satisfied with a thorough study of the Bible and a meditation of the meaningful truths that come forth as a result.

I may not be wise in the ways of the world nor in the realm of academia, but even the lowest thought that God can muster is wiser than anything that comes out of the world (1 Corinthians 1:25). Everything I need to know is found in relationship with Christ. The closer I get to Him, the more I will understand about the things that matter most (Colossians 2:2-3). While the world may not recognize this brand of wisdom, I will never be sorry that I sought after it.

In God's kingdom, wisdom flows from my relationship with Christ, not from the potency of my brain power.

Ambition

"You can do anything you put your mind to."

In the world in which I live, I am constantly bombarded with the message that I can reach any goal I set as long as I try hard enough. Ambition can buy me the American dream, the fulfillment of my aspirations and the success I've always wanted. As long as I work consistently and purposefully, I can hit any target for which I aim.

While this philosophy may (or may not) work in the world's economy, it certainly is not appropriate in God's. In His kingdom it is less my own effort and more of God's grace that is vital. In the world, I am the maker of my own destiny. In God's kingdom, He is the Master Potter who created each of His own with a specific purpose in mind (Isaiah 45:9). Therefore, my role is to submit to His Lordship and allow Him to lead me through my days.

This means I must spend less time in trying to reach the goals I have set for myself, and more time in learning about the plan God has for my life (Jeremiah 29:11-13). I must decrease the amount of effort I put into getting ahead and increase the exertion I make into growing in the grace and knowledge of Christ Jesus (2 Peter 3:17-18). I must put forth less energy into doing what I think looks religious and focus more intently on my relationship with the God who loves me unconditionally (1 John 4:16).

In His so-called Sermon on the Mount, Jesus taught some radical truths as He revealed His kingdom to a hungry crowd. He said it was time to cease running after all the things I think I need. To me, this seems like a crazy concept. Wouldn't I be irresponsible if I don't take care of my basic necessities? I ask myself. While the world may think so, Jesus had His reason for teaching such a radical idea. He was trying to convey to those who would follow Him that we have a Father who knows our needs and is perfectly able to supply them.

Since I possess such a Father, I am free to live with the liberty of wholly focusing on Him and His kingdom. I can devote myself to the work He has set aside for me to do, knowing that He will give me what I need to live (Ephesians 2:10). Or, as Oswald Chambers said, I can dedicate my life to Jesus Christ and pleasing Him. "Learn to discern where the ambition leads, and you will see why it is so necessary to live facing the Lord Jesus Christ." Any other direction will take me away from Him.

In God's kingdom, the less ambition I possess to attain worldly success, the more I have left to run to Jesus.

The values of God's kingdom are upside down and backwards to what I find in the world around me. Therefore, it is important that I keep in mind that my confidence comes less from me and more from God, lasting wisdom is found in the mysteries revealed by the One who desires to be known, and the drive to succeed in this world can be replaced by a determination to grow closer to God. In these ways, less is more in God's kingdom.

As I begin this day it is my prayer that I can step back from the world's economy and take stock of how much I have invested there.

So What?

My clan is the weakest in the whole tribe of Manasseh,

and I am the least in my entire family!'

'I will be with you.

as if you were fighting against one man.'"

My dog ate my homework.

The sun was in my eyes.

I forgot.

I ran out of time.

These are common excuses I've heard throughout my life. While it is tempting for me to use excuses to justify my failures, it doesn't do anything toward solving the problem my sin has created. It takes humility and spiritual maturity to be able to own up to my weaknesses and wrongdoing.

As if it wasn't bad enough for me to try to explain away my failure to do right when dealing with humans, it simply isn't a good idea to try this same tactic when it comes to God. Still, it doesn't keep me from trying. Usually, my insecurities and fears drive me to such a point.

When God calls, I have a million excuses: I'm ill-equipped, not well-suited, afraid, inexperienced. What I must remember is that God calls the weak to shame the strong in order to receive all the glory for what is done and to keep me humble (1 Corinthians 1:27-29). Therefore, I must trust Him and remember the only thing that matters; He is with me!

Wisdom

The world says that wisdom comes with experience and age, honed over the years when one has gone through difficult circumstances and come out on the other side with lessons learned and understanding gained. God, however, says something different.

He says that He is the source of all wisdom. When I need to know what to do, how to handle a situation or how to best use the resources God has given me, He will show me if I trust Him fully. I must believe with all of my heart that He holds the answer to every question, the solution to all problems and the key to every locked door (James 1:2-8). If I'm not completely confident in His ability to supply the know-how and understanding I need, He will withhold wisdom from me.

When I don't respect God as the giver of all good things and the dispenser of all that I need, I will doubt, thinking I may need to consult a wise friend to confirm His answer (Psalm 111:10). Other times I may think it foolish to only depend on God to show me the way, wondering, what if He's busy or what if I miss His cues? I could even prefer to listen to "an expert" since his advice sounds so practical and common-sense. Whatever my excuse for not seeking God, it will only result in missing His guidance.

When I seek the world's brand of "wisdom" I will find myself going after that which does not honor God. My mission will become to elevate my own agenda and to win at all costs. I'll look out for my own best interests and forget about others, figuring they can fend for themselves. Jealousy will rear it's ugly head and I'll find myself miserable.

The wisdom God dispenses liberally, however, is wholly intent on honoring Him and furthering His purpose. It doesn't promote the common practice of using others to get what I want but sees all people as bearers of God's holy image. Peace will follow as God gets the glory for what He is doing in my life (James 3:13-18).

When I trust God enough to answer His call on my life, He will give me wisdom to know how to live.

Strength

I am weak. As someone who has been given physical strength, however, this admission does not come easily. While it may be natural for me to lift a heavy box, take two steps at a time, or open a tightly-closed jar, it's not so easy for me to do what is outside of my comfort zone. For this, I need the strength of the Lord.

God is faithful to provide the power I need to love those who treat me with contempt. It takes His strength to show kindness and compassion to someone who constantly throws sharp barbs at me. Often, though, the harshest among us are the ones who are hurting the most. God's love could break through the hard shell they've erected for protection.

He is also the only One who can lift me up out of the pit of despair. When my feelings tell me I'm no good and my life is without hope, the Lord is the One who can give me the strength to stand up and receive His mercy (Psalm 40:1-3).

In addition, the Lord can give me the ability to stand firm in times of confusion, speaking the truth in love. When it seems to me that others are more equipped to stand up for what is right, if I'm the one who notices the wrong-teaching, it is up to me to set the record straight. He will give me the strength to do my part so the body of Christ will be edified (Ephesians 4:14-16).

When I trust God enough to answer His call on my life, He will give me the strength to do what He's called me to do.

Favor

I didn't know what to do. I finished all the work, but was unsure of how to complete the job. Since I didn't feel comfortable with the final stages, I let the project sit dormant for years. As my friend is fond of saying, I failed to run through the finish line.

God is a strong finisher. When He set out to create the world, He didn't stop until the task was done, looking at His work and declaring it good (Genesis 1). I, on the other hand, tend to work with gusto in the areas where I feel comfortable and neglect what is not. For instance, I have no problem cooking up a great meal, but would rather leave the clean-up to someone else.

When I buck my feelings, however, and instead trust God enough to plunge ahead, I will find that He sets all the pieces in place so that the job is not as bad as I thought it would be. Before I know it, I'm doing what I thought I could never do because the Lord is making it all work out.

If I don't feel comfortable speaking in public, for example, I can trust Him to give me the words I need to deliver the message He has for others to hear. Or, when I answer His call to adopt a child even though I've never thought of myself as the motherly type, I will find my heart drawn to the little one who so desperately needs a home. Even if I don't mind praying with my family but could never imagine leading a prayer in a group, trusting God enough to obey His gentle prods will result in words freely flowing from my mouth in a song of praise.

Not only will God equip me, but He has gone before me to set all the pieces in place in preparation for my arrival. When I resist the urge to hold back but instead walk forward in faith, I will find doors opening up to allow my passage, people offering to help, and resources appearing as if from nowhere. I'll only witness this kind of favor, however, when I trust God enough to take a step into the darkness where He is waiting for me.

When I trust God enough to answer His call in my life, His favor will enable me to finish the mission.

I have a million excuses as to why I can't do something to which God is calling me. God's answer, however, is "So what?" If He is with me, what is there I cannot do? His presence gives me the wisdom I need to know what to do, the strength required to do the work, and the favor that is necessary to finish the job. In other words, I have no excuse!

As I begin this day it is my prayer that I can stop using excuses and start trusting God.

President Benjamin Harrison was called "Kid Gloves" because he wore the hand coverings to protect his skin from its tendency for infection.

In high school, Jerry Lewis' nickname was "Id," short for idiot.

Carole Marsciarelli became known as "Penny" because as a child she saved up pennies to buy a horse. We now know her as Penny Marshall.

Flip Wilson earned his stage name while serving in the U.S. Air Force when one of his bunk mates said, "He flippeth his lid."

Many times nicknames come about because of a certain behavior or practice, or due to a particular incident that occurred. Gideon was no different. He earned the nickname "Jerubbaal" because he had the courage to defy his father and the townspeople by obeying God and destroying the altar they erected to Baal. When confronted, he challenged the people's willingness to contend for Baal.

What is it that I am quick to defend? For what am I willing to rise up and contend? If it's so powerful a force in my life that I find the need to speak out on its behalf, maybe I need to reconsider my priorities.

Freedom

Their presence burned me up inside. I was driving on a local interstate freeway when I caught sight of their protest signs as I passed underneath a bridge. They held their signs against the very war my husband was risking his life in which to fight. These protesters even had the nerve to question the honor of my husband and soldiers like him. To vent my frustrations, I wrote a scalding letter to the editor of the newspaper, chastising them for creating a hostile environment to which my husband would return from the battlefield.

We love our freedoms and use them liberally to proclaim whatever beliefs we so adamantly wish to share with the people around us. When anyone attempts to take away my freedom of speech which gives me the right to voice my opinion, and those protesters to do the same, I am ready for a fight.

It's easy for me to get passionately drawn into a quest for freedom. When I see the government growing larger and larger as it demands more and more power, I am alarmed. I am ready to fight to save the liberties for which our forefathers so valiantly fought.

What about the freedom Christ gave His life for me to enjoy? Am I as deeply passionate about my liberty from the obligation to earn my own salvation? No. Many times I find myself feeling guilty for how I have fallen short instead of remembering my true identity as a sinner saved by grace who is incapable of doing good (Romans 3:23, Romans 7:18). Other times I'm bound and determined to prove my worth by serving out of obligation instead of obedience to God's direct calling on my life. Sometimes I even use my own effort to attempt to become a better person instead of cooperating with God as He changes me from the inside out (Romans 12:1-2).

Jesus gave His life, suffering much abuse, so that I could live in freedom from the obligation to follow the law, in peace with my Father who expects perfection, and liberated from the guilt that comes from falling short. I am justified freely by God's grace, made right with a holy God who loves me enough to send His Son to take my punishment so that I might approach Him boldly and with confidence (Romans 3:24, Hebrews 4:16). Am I so quick to throw this away?

Yes I am. Despite this unspeakable sacrifice, I so often slip back into my tendency to try to do good, to attempt to earn my place in God's family by the sweat of my brow, to hold up the standard I am unable to reach but expect others to attain. When will I stand up and contend for this freedom which has already been won for me (Galatians 5)?

Jesus died so that I could enjoy true freedom. Let me be known as one who has the courage to speak in defense of this liberty.

Rights

I remember the lyrics to an absurd song from my youth. "You gotta fight for your right to party." Even then I thought it lame, it did speak to a generation of kids who bought into the idea that they had the right to do with their life as they best saw fit.

Americans take the idea of rights very seriously, so much so that the thought that I have complete autonomy is ingrained within me. Unfortunately, while this way of thinking may appeal to my sin nature, it runs counter to God's kingdom. If I am to make Jesus my king and live in His kingdom, I will need to realize that He is the only One with a right to me. After all, He bought me at a steep price (1 Corinthians 6:20).

When I think, then, that I am entitled to be treated fairly and with respect, I will place that expectation above God's love. Instead of showing compassion to the harried clerk who rudely handles my refund, then, I will demand to notify her supervisor to make sure action is taken against her rough behavior. Unfortunately, while I may have done the right thing in the eyes of the world, I neglected to pass on the love and mercy of God to someone who desperately needed it.

I will also fight a merchant tooth and nail for a good price on a service he provides for me, thinking it is my right to pay the least amount possible. Unfortunately, while I may have proved myself a shrewd consumer, I failed to contribute to the livelihood of a man who earns his living serving others.

When my daughter comes home from school with a note from the teacher, I take the opportunity to defend my child, accusing the overwrought woman of unfair treatment. Unfortunately, I missed an opportunity to extend the forgiveness so freely given to me by a God whose mercies are new every morning.

Jesus' blood paid for my life. Let me be known as one who lets God use me in a way that brings glory to Him.

Contentment

I don't want to be rich but have enough to pay my bills with a little left over to do what I want to do. I want to live comfortably. This is what I used to tell myself as I struggled to pay our family's bills. Instead of being thankful for what God had provided and the faithful way He supplied my needs, I wanted more. I wasn't content with what I had been given. Instead, I thought I'd be happier with a little more.

I seek that which gratifies my sinful desire; to live a life of ease and to be well cared for. Unfortunately, since my sin nature is never satisfied, I will never reach that level of contentment I thought was just up the pay scale.

The Apostle Paul told Timothy that, "true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth" (1 Timothy 6:6 NLT). He went on to explain how we came into this world with nothing and will leave the same way. Therefore, if we have what we need, that should be enough. When I go after more than what I've been given, I am in danger of wandering away from what is of true value: my faith. (1 Timothy 6:6-12)

As a result, I would be wise to seek godliness instead of happiness, living by faith instead of being led by my flesh, and sitting at the feet of Jesus instead of going after a reputation as a hard worker. While I may think being content is what will give me a good life, the real joy comes when I surrender my life to Christ, letting Him be Lord of my life. It is then that I will produce fruit that will last, and that will bring true satisfaction(John 15:5).

Jesus died so that I could live an abundant life. (John 10:10) Let me be known as one who values Him above my desire to live comfortably.

What is my legacy? When I am gone will people remember me for the way I stood for my liberties, defended my rights and sought after a life of contentment? Or, will others recall the way I lived as a sinner saved by grace who was bought with a price and valued holy living above my own sense of satisfaction? Today could be the day that I could start to make a name for myself; a name that will bring glory to the One who died for me!

As I begin this day it is my prayer that I can set aside any right I think I have to my own life and freely submit to Christ.

When is my own comfort my utmost desire?

How do I forget the freedom I have in Christ?

Downward Spiral

Then the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD

and served the Baals."

Judges 2:10-11

School. Enriching activities. Competitive sports. Meaningful friendships. There are many pursuits available and touted as important to the development of children that I as a parent strive to include in my sons and daughters' lives.

Consequently, I support them in their studies, making sure they have plenty of rest, eat right and get their homework done. I am told by a competitive world that including sports in their lives also promotes healthy exercise while teaching them to work as a team and to develop self-discipline. As a parent, I also feel the pressure to make sure my kids have good friends who are willing to support them and provide companionship while helping them to cultivate sound interpersonal skills. There are many areas of development to consider when raising healthy children.

Out of all the areas in which I endeavor to promote development in my children, however, do I ever think about their spiritual development? Do I consider the importance of teaching them God's ways, sharing the Gospel and encouraging them to enter into a relationship with Jesus Christ? These are not things that are automatically known nor are they something that can be learned simply by being the children of believing parents.

Instead, the truths found in God's Word must be passed on to my offspring, deliberately and consistently taught. Otherwise they will be lost to a whole new generation; and then there will be consequences.

Doing Evil

Hooking up. Cheating. Gender Identity. Homosexuality.

These are some examples of the evil that has permeated the hearts and minds of a new generation. They are taught to be tolerant of alternative lifestyles, to do what it takes to get ahead, and that their own happiness is what's most important. As a result, God and His ways have been lost.

A new Pew study reveals that young adults aged 18-33, dubbed the "Millennial Generation," are the least religious ever. Only 33% consider themselves to be "religious," while 20% in this age bracket have married. This change in cultural behavior can be seen as direct result of a whole new generation growing up without God and His values. It is clear that those who drift away from the Lord will do what is evil in the eyes of the Lord (2 Timothy 3:1-9).

Therefore, it is not surprising that homosexuality is widely accepted as simply a way to express yourself. When children are not given a foundation in Biblical truths, it is easy for them to believe the lies they are fed through the media, entertainment and even the educational system. Without a grounding in what is right in God's eyes, they'll be easily swayed (Ephesians 4:11-14).

Is it any wonder, that children today view sex as just another pastime? When they haven't learned to respect this gift God gave His creation to be enjoyed within the confines of marriage, it's not surprising to instead find them following their own nature and doing what feels good.

I can't either be shocked to learn that 90% of middle school students have copied their homework from a fellow-student, 80% of high school students have admitted to cheating on exams last year while 82% of college-age students have plagiarized from Wikipedia. Cheating is considered to be a socially acceptable part of getting through life. Without the grounding found in learning about a God who values truth and honesty, this trend will only grow stronger with time.

When I fail to teach the next generation about God and His ways, they will be comfortable with doing what is evil in the eyes of the Lord.

Serving gods

God is becoming irrelevant. I'm not saying that He really is immaterial, but that people believe He is not as important to their day-to-day lives as He used to be. The above cited survey stated that only 2 out of 3 young adults adhere to any kind of religion. Assuming that some of those people are following other gods, we are left with a small percentage of those who truly buy into what God teaches in His Word.

While I've been warned that few will find the narrow gate, (Matthew 7:14) it is apparent to me that the Lord has faded into the foggy distance for many because He has not been revered as the center of all things. When our society removes the Ten Commandments and stops using God's standard to guide their own judgment, it's not surprising to find people turning to other sources to find their values, sense of purpose and guidance.

Psychologists grow in stature as people seek to know how to handle situations. Self-help books fly off the shelves as the hurting look for ways to find healing. Alternative practices such as meditation are adopted as the stressed-out and burdened try to find peace.

In truth, all that is needed is found in relationship with the One who created me through faith in Jesus Christ. When I turn to Him, He gives wisdom, promotes healing and is the only source of peace (Proverbs 9:10, Psalm 147:3, Philippians 4:6-7). Without Him, nothing I do matters (John 15:5).

When I fail to teach the next generation of God and His ways, they will turn to other sources to find meaning.

Losing God's Favor

Moses acknowledged that he was unwilling to go forward without it (Exodus 33:3, 12-14). Saul didn't realize it's importance until it was too late (1 Samuel 16:14). David knew it was his only hope (Psalm 25). God's presence and favor is what sets His people apart from all others, making straight their paths and guiding their footsteps (Proverbs 3:5-6, Psalm 37:23).

I hear people talk about how hard the times are. There are mass killings, wars, abductions, murders, drunk driving, fallen economies and attacks by terrorists. Planes fall from the sky, the earth swallows up entire neighborhoods and monster storms wipe out complete sections of our cities. People wonder why all the bad things are happening.

Living in a fallen world is just plain brutal. There is no rest for anyone as darkness descends upon us. Instead of looking for a way to cope, however, it would be wiser to consider Who we have forsaken. Without God's protective favor, life in such a place is unpleasant to say the least. Living in darkness without the benefit of Light is no life at all.

Yet this is what we are doing as a culture. I see the way entire nations deny God by refusing to acknowledge His sovereign nature. Instead of relying on His strength and admitting to man's sinfulness, we stubbornly resolve to pick up the pieces and move on. In the place of submitting to His sovereign nature, we think we can drive things our way by the sheer force of our will. As a substitute to honoring God as the Creator of all things, we attempt to come up with our own rules, even going so far as to try to modify or improve on His handiwork.

When I fail to teach the next generation of God and His ways, they will find out what it's like to live without the benefit of God's favor.

In the time of the Judges, there was a clear cycle of unfaithfulness followed by repentance and the return of God's favor. Likewise, I am living in a time when mankind is drifting away from God. When I fail to buck the trend and teach young ones the importance of the truth found in His Word, there will be certain consequences I can expect, and am in fact already witnessing(Deuteronomy 6:4-9). Evil will increase, other gods will rise in importance, and God's favor will be withdrawn. In these ways, a denial of God's charge to teach His commandments leads to a downward spiral that cannot be avoided.

As I begin this day it is my prayer that I can remember how important it is to teach the next generation about the Lord.

When do I avoid speaking the truth in love because I think someone else will set the record straight?

Who is in my sphere of influence but has no understanding of God and His ways? How can I bring enlightenment?

The Lord Goes Before You

"Then Deborah said to Barak,

'Get ready!

This is the day the LORD will give you victory over Sisera,

for the LORD is marching ahead of you.'

So Barak lead his 10,000 warriors down

the slopes of Mount Tabor into battle."

Judges 4:14 NLT

He knew in his heart what he must do. The people had suffered so under the iron fist of Sisera, the commander of Jabin's army. His 900 chariots intimidated the people of Israel into submission. Who could rise up against them to win liberty? Barak knew he was the man for the job; the Lord had placed this call upon his life. Still, his heart quaked at the thought of what he must do.

Soon he received a summons from Deborah, the prophetess of great faith who led the people with grace and wisdom. Not surprisingly, she spoke to him as if he already knew what to do, which he did.

"Didn't you hear a command from the Lord to confront Sisera and his army? Go! Take 10,000 men from Naphtali and Zebulun and the Lord will draw Sisera and his multitudes to meet you at the river Kishon. There our mighty God will deliver them into your hand."

"I am ready, but I do not want to go it alone. I need the assurance that God is with me; I need to know His will and to hear His voice. Since your faith is so strong, Deborah, will you go with me to help me do as God has bid?"

"Yes," came the reply from the woman of God, "but it will not be you who receives the glory, for the Lord will deliver Sisera into the hands of a woman." (paraphrased from Judges 4:1-9)

Barak proceeded to gather the necessary troops and prepare for battle. Still, he held back. In order to rally his courage, she reminded him Whose battle this was. "Go! The Lord is already there waiting for you, therefore there is nothing to fear!"

How often do I hang back, unsure of the calling God has placed on my life? I wait for reassurance, wanting to make sure I'm not out of my mind. I fear failure. I may have felt confident when the call first came but now that the time for action has arrived, my resolve wavers. In these times of doubt and insecurity, I can remind myself as Deborah did for Barak: The Lord goes before me.

Prepare the Way

The entire Army post where I lived with my husband and family was talking about the visit. Secret Service members painstakingly inspected the areas where the president would visit, checking for security risks. Local law enforcement was alerted, evacuation routes were secured and checkpoints established. Every measure was taken in order to ensure the safety and protection of the president.

I was amazed at the measures that were taken to prepare the way for the man who held the highest office in the land. The gym where I worked out was even closed for a few days prior to his visit in order to secure it for the president's possible morning workout two days hence.

Even though I don't have a security detail that goes before me, preparing for every move I make, God does lay some groundwork ahead of me. There are pieces that must be put into place, people whose hearts need softening, and obstacles which must be cleared.

This means I need not fear to step ahead in faith, knowing that God has freed a path for me to walk upon. It reminds me of the time my family and I were traveling across the country in the snow. The going was tough until we spotted a snow plow. As we fell in at a safe distance behind the large snow-removing truck, we benefited from the cleared road and freshly applied sand. Our traction improved and the going was easier.

My job, then, is to follow behind the Lord as He prepares the way for me. When I'm afraid to reach out to the one who has hurt me so badly, I can go with confidence, knowing that God has prepared her heart to receive my goodwill offering. Or if I know I must step ahead into the place that seems so foreign, I can be assured that my Father's presence will make it feel like home. Even if I sense God leading me where I vowed to never go again, I can find strength in the fact that He is doing something new today, creating life where there once was nothing but death and destruction (Isaiah 43:19).

When God calls me into the unknown, I can take heart knowing that He is preparing the way for me.

Fight the Battle

It was quite embarrassing. This little shepherd boy who knew nothing of soldiering had naively offered to kill the 9-foot giant-of-a-man who was born and bred to fight. For well over a month, this Philistine champion, all decked out in his heavy armor and bearing his mighty javelin, mocked and heckled the Israelite army, hurling insults and taunting the frightened men. Not one man offered to face him one-on-one; that is until David showed up to bring food to his brothers(1 Samuel 17).

How could this young lad possess the courage to stand against such a formidable foe? He knew the Lord in a way that most did not. He had experienced God's power as he killed lion and bear while tending sheep. He knew something about God's ability to fight on his behalf. Therefore, David was able to unwaveringly say to this terrifying mammoth, "I'll strike you down and cut off your head. . . it is not by sword or spear that the LORD saves; for the battle is the LORD's"(1 Samuel 17:46, 47).

I, too, can possess such courage if I will only give God a chance to fight my battles for me. When I'm tempted to seek revenge upon those who try to destroy me, I can instead walk forward in love, choosing good over evil while letting God settle the score (Romans 12:17-21).

When I feel helpless against the overwhelming hardships that bring such suffering into my life, I can rest in the knowledge that God's grace is enough to give me the strength to carry on (2 Corinthians 12:9).

When I want to do whatever I can to protect those I love from heartache, I can trust God to use the hard circumstances of their lives to mold them into the man or woman He created them to be (Hebrews 12:11, Isaiah 38:17).

When God calls me into the impossible, I can take heart knowing that God is fighting the battle for me.

Lead

My dog is a horrible leader. As a lab mixed with a herding breed, he is created to round up animals and drive them into a pen or keep them in a herd as they graze. Consequently, he prefers to walk behind a group.

In contrast, the Lord is a Shepherd who leads from the front. I can take comfort in knowing He is there, guiding the way, revealing His plan, and showing me where to go. I don't need to figure out what my next step is, how to negotiate a certain obstacle, or when to take a rest and when to run. God is confidently and assuredly leading me every step of the way.

The problem comes with my ability to follow. Many times I run ahead, assuming I know the direction in which the Lord is leading. Other times I wander off to the side, losing track of Him as I let worry, worldly attractions and unnecessary pursuits distract me from His guidance. Then there are the times when I tarry, feeling unsure of the path on which my Shepherd walks.

Whatever my issue, I can be confident in God's ability to lead me well. He knows when rest is called for, when prodding is necessary and when reassurance is needed. He also is my perfect protector, reliable provider, and the Giver of all good gifts (Psalm 23, James 1:17).

When God calls me forward, I can take heart knowing that He is expertly leading me.

It is easy to lose heart when the time comes to act on the call God has placed on my life. Remembering His position out in front, however, can give me courage to step out in faith. He prepares the way, fights my battles, and leads my footsteps. Therefore, there is no need to fear but every reason to step forward in faith.

As I begin this day it is my prayer that I can trust God enough to go where He is leading me.

When do I balk at the mission to which He has called me?

How can the knowledge of His presence spur me on?

It's a Matter of Timing

"There is a time for everything,

and a season for every activity under the heavens."

Ecclesiastes 3:1

Death. Change. Speaking up. Keeping silent. Agony of the heart. Healing and wholeness. Ending relationships. Forming bonds. Lamentation. Rejoicing. Generosity. Wise stewardship. Supporting. Letting go. Entering the battle. Keeping the peace. Loving. Hating.

Life is filled with all kinds of activities, choices and opportunities. In fact, it's not whether something or another will happen in life, rather, it's a matter of when it will occur. How do I know if the time is right? When do I resist and when do I give in? What's appropriate?

It depends; not on me, but on God. Timing is His, and His is perfect.

Wait. Most Americans are proactive, wanting to nip issues in the bud before they become too big to handle. As a culture, we like to keep busy, thinking that the more we do, the more important and meaningful are our lives. We are also big on taking the bull by the horns and getting things done. No sense waiting around. It's better to do something, anything, rather than delaying action, sitting around waiting for something to happen. We think we must make our own opportunities, create our own destinies, fulfill our own plans in order to taste success.

God has a different outlook. He created all things to operate in a different manner. He designed the earth and all that is in it to be directed by Himself. When I wait on His cues, depending not on my own sense of timing but on His, I find myself going in a different direction and at a different pace than I'd choose for myself, sitting out from many of the activities I would normally wear myself out doing, and slowing down so that I can actually enjoy each moment He's given to me. Instead of bearing the responsibility of coming up with my own plans and figuring out how to pull them off, I can rest in what He's already accomplished, trusting Him to lead me where He wants me to go, when He wants me to begin (Isaiah 40:31). His way is always better than mine.

When I wait on God's lead, I'm demonstrating my faith in Him as the One who sees the big picture and holds all the pieces in His hands.

Run. I've always heard I must learn to walk before I can run. There is a progression of sorts. Once I become proficient at the easy stuff, I can move on to the more difficult. When I try to apply this approach to my faith, however, I find it doesn't always line up to God's way of doing things. He calls me to run my race, exerting myself, striving hard, no matter how far along I am. This is not a wimpy proposition, this faith walk. Instead, its a test of endurance and takes a feat of strength that comes from God's never-ending provision.

God has marked out a specific course for me to follow so that I compete not against others but only to do my best for His glory. The path He has specified for me to follow is different than the course designed for those around me. I have a unique race to run which necessitates that I focus my attentions on Jesus as the One who initiated my faith in the first place and who is in charge of bringing it to completion when He returns again (Philippians 1:6, Hebrews 12:1-2). As I do, I will find that I can trust Him to equip me as I go, proving that He has perfectly prepared me for every good work as I set myself aside for His use (2 Timothy 2:21).

I can run my own race with confidence, trusting God to ready me for whatever He has planned for me.

Beauty. I love to watch butterflies fluttering around our flower garden. As they dip and soar in a haphazard pattern, I often think of their humble beginnings as a caterpillar. When they enter their cocoon to begin their transformation into such a beautiful winged creature, there is nothing I can do to speed up this process. Even though I may want to hurry it along, helping the new creature emerge from it's silky covering so it can fly free among the blooms, I would kill it by doing so. The delicate creature can only reveal it's beauty at just the right time.

It's the same with life. The good, excellent and appropriate things I long to see manifested in my own life or in the lives of those I love will only come about at the proper time, and it is different for each of us (Ecclesiastes 3:11). Some are late bloomers while others blossom quicker. This beauty cannot be forced in the same way the emergence of a butterfly cannot be hurried along. Instead, God must be allowed to fulfill His own purposes in His own time, not in mine. And it's important to note that He does not need my help to do so (Acts 17:24-25, Ecclesiastes 3:14).

Allowing God to have free reign to bring about the beauty He has planned for each of His children releases me of that responsibility.

I face a variety of happenings in this life and it's often hard to know when the time is right. While I think I'd rather be the one in charge of the timetable, God holds this responsibility. As I trust Him, I find I can wait on His lead, confidently run my own race with gusto, and allow Him to bring about the beauty for which I long. As I trust God more each day, I realize making the right choice at the right time is not so much about common sense or smarts. Instead, It's a matter of waiting for His timing.

As I begin this day it is my prayer that I can trust God to orchestrate my life.

Go! But first. . .

'Go up at once to Bethel and live there.

Make an altar there to God,

who appeared to you when you fled from your brother Esau.'

So Jacob told his household and all who were with him,

'Get rid of the foreign gods you have among you.

Purify yourselves

and change your clothes.

Let us go up at once to Bethel.

Then I will make an altar there to God,

who responded to me in my time of distress

and has been with me wherever I went.'"

Genesis 35:1-3

My daughter was so excited to begin her trip to New York City for a fashion and talent convention. Her modeling school was taking a group of students to compete in the International Modeling and Talent Association's annual scouting event and she spent a lot of time preparing. Before she could go, however, I had required that she finish her homeschool studies thus earning her high school degree. Even though her heart was set on NYC, there were some details to which she had to attend before she would be ready.

It is not so different with me in my walk with the Lord. He may call me to a particular mission, a certain ministry or a specific task. Before I can jump in with both feet, however, I would be wise to consider a few items of preparation.

Purge

Finally the water was turned back on after some repairs had been completed to the pipes in our cul-de-sac. The worker told me to run the water in the sinks for a few minutes to purge the lines from built up air and any debris that might have contaminated the lines. As the water ran, I could see what he meant as the steady flow was interrupted by sputtering and knocking as the trapped air pockets left the system. Soon, our water was flowing smoothly again.

In the same way that these air pockets can interrupt the flow of water into my home, so can attitudes, hobbies, relationships, careers, or a myriad of other pursuits come between me and God. Anything that hampers the flow of the Holy Spirit into my life is considered to be an idol.

I can make anything a god when I give it more attention than I do the Lord. Exercise used to be an idol for me. While running and working out is beneficial to my health, it is not helpful when it takes up more space in my thoughts than does my Father.

When I thought about how I could improve the time on my upcoming run more than I meditated on the sacrifice of Jesus, then I realized I had an idol problem. When the new exercises I could include in my routine monopolized my thoughts instead of the mysterious ways of God, then what was considered as healthy and good had turned into a god. When I found myself daydreaming about how great it felt when my feet were hitting the pavement and my lungs were breathing in the fresh air instead of focusing my mind on a particular passage of scripture, then it became apparent it was time to get rid of my obsession.

While many things can be beneficial, almost anything can become a passion that steals my thoughts, efforts and heart away from the Lord. He is to be my one, true love.

Before I can answer the call of God, it is vital that I purge my life of any and all idols.

Purify

Sometimes, water lines can become contaminated with bacteria or viruses. In these rare cases, public health authorities issue a boil-water advisory, recommending to local residents that they boil drinking water for one-minute before using it. This practice effectively kills these harmful organisms, producing a liquid that is safe for consumption.

While everyone wants clean water to drink and use for cooking, not many of us think about the purity of our hearts. God reminds me of the importance of protecting the center from which everything in my life flows in Proverbs 4:23. "Guard your heart with all vigilance, for from it are the sources of life." (NET)

In this day and age, it is easy to let sinful attitudes, selfish motivations, and indulgent pursuits monopolize my heart. Then, I find myself driven by my own fleshly desires instead of the will of God.

Therefore, I must be careful with how I spend my time. If I have a little extra, I can either find something with which I can amuse myself on social media, or I can seek out wisdom to enrich my soul.

While I'm completing my work for the day, I can either think about what I'm going to do when I finish, or I can dwell on the scripture passage that stood out to me in my morning reading.

When I'm driving to and from work, on my way to appointments or running errands, I can either take a walk down memory lane and listen to some golden oldies on the radio, or I can use the time to worship the Creator of all things through song. In this life I can expect to reap what I sow: Whatever I allow in will eventually come out in one way or another.

Before I can answer the call of God, it is vital that I purify myself of that which leads me astray.

Put On

It is said that I should dress the way I want to be addressed since I live in a world that judges by appearances. While it may be important to make a good first impression, God is more concerned about a different kind of clothing.

Paul gave some great advice to me as I live in a time that is moving quickly toward the day of my salvation. He reminds me how important it is to live decently, avoiding the dark temptations that lurk all around me, sticking instead to the light. Instead of putting on some kind of superhero costume to help me negotiate the shadows where my enemy prowls, however, I am called to clothe myself with Christ Jesus Himself (Romans 13:11-14).

Replacing my own sinful desires with my true identity in Christ is a necessary daily practice. Instead of thinking of myself as my own to treat as I see fit, to go where I want to go, and to act in the way that seems right to me, I must remember I belong to Christ (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).

When I find it natural to put myself down, I must remember I am infinitely valuable as one who was made in the very image of God (Genesis 1:27). In place of letting myself go down to the pit of despair as I think of all the wrongs I have committed, I can remember that I am redeemed and nothing can separate me from His great love (1 Peter 1:18-19, Romans 8:38-39).

Before I can answer the call of God, I must put on the Lord Jesus Christ.

God has a great plan for my life. When He calls me to move forward in faith, I want to be ready. Before I jump, however, it is important that I purge myself of all idols, purify myself of anything that could distract, and clothe myself with Christ Jesus. In these ways I will prepare myself to answer His great call.

As I begin this day it is my prayer that I can take the time to prepare before I jump ahead.

To Know Him Better

To be known and loved; that is the cry of every human heart. We desire to enjoy intimacy with another in such a way that we are fully understood, yet completely accepted and embraced. Knowing that we were created in the image of God, I can safely assume that this desire must originate with the Creator himself.

He desires that we know Him, as well. Not as a distant God who rules benevolently over us, but as an intimate Father who walks beside us, guiding and directing our paths in His ways, loving our silly quirks and enjoying the delight of our heart. To be known and loved is the cry of every human that comes from the heart of God.

Enlightenment

I see things through the eyes of a sinful, jaded human who has been hurt, has fallen many times, and who suffers from many fears. Consequently, I mostly see the product of sin all around me; noticing all the pain and suffering, dangerous pitfalls, and threats that loom.

When I ask God to open the eyes of my heart, as the worship song declares, I begin to come into the light. It is then that I see the tender care of a mother for her autistic child instead of the unfairness of a disability that I used to notice, or the kindness of a stranger ministering to the outcast where I used to see only futility, or the power of God changing the heart of a loved one where all I once saw was stubborn insolence.

As I learn more about God, I find that He opens the eyes of my heart to see with His eyes.

Riches

Treasures beyond compare. The resources to buy anything I want. Enough income to be able to splurge on luxuries. The ability to go where I want, when I want. Many people think of something like this when they see the word "riches."

God, however, has something far more valuable in mind when He uses the word "prosperity." To Him, His people are His treasured possession (Deuteronomy 7:6). The fact that He loved me enough to send Jesus to die so that I can inherit His kingdom gives me hope and God pleasure (Colossians 1:12,19-20).

Remembering this wealth that God has bestowed upon me helps when I'm down in the trenches sweating it out. What I have to look forward to far outweighs any suffering I can endure here on earth, and this gives me incentive to keep moving forward toward what I cannot see but know is there (2 Corinthians 4:17-18).

As I learn more about God, I grow in the hope I have in the eternal heritage I can claim through Jesus Christ.

Power

I could hear the energy crackling and humming as it surged through the giant power lines raised high above the ground. Walking under the enormous robot-like structures, I considered all the energy that was being delivered to thousands of people so they could run their appliances, heat their homes and burn their lights. The amount of power located above my head was awe-inspiring.

This power, however, is nothing compared to the might of God. Not only can He speak the world into existence (Genesis 1), part the Red Sea (Exodus 14:21-22) and raise the dead to life (Luke 24:5-6), but He can also transform a heart of stone (Ezekiel 36:26), mend a broken marriage (Psalm 34:18), and break the bonds of debt.

As I learn more about God, I realize the incomparable mighty strength He pours into my life.

Just as I want to be known and loved, God shares this desire even though He is in need of nothing. As I walk with Him, getting to know Him better and growing in my love for Him, He opens the eyes of my heart, reminds me of the hope I have in Him, and provides a continuous flow of His incomparable power. To know Him better is the cry of my heart!

As I begin this day it is my prayer that I can seek to know God with all of my heart.

Shifting Value Scale

I used to live for the sport of bodybuilding. Every waking moment was spent devoted to increasing my knowledge about training, posing and competing. Whenever I had a spare moment, I used it to think of ways in which I could tighten up my schedule, opening up more time for preparation, or I would visualize myself on stage going through my posing routine, or I would research new information on nutrition that could give me the edge over my competition. In short, I ate, slept and breathed bodybuilding.

Now that I live for Christ, however, those things seem trivial and unimportant. While I still work out, it is not what drives me each day. As I slowly submit more and more of myself over to the Lord, I see how He takes those parts and transforms them so that I desire Him and Him alone. Everything else fades in comparison with the awesomeness of knowing Christ.

Confidence

He seemed so cocky, this little boy dressed in shepherd's garb. The man he so boldly confronted was a fighting machine; over 9-feet tall and dressed from head to foot in armor. This giant of a man was accustomed to killing because it was his profession. When he talked smack, he had something with which to back it up. David, on the other hand, only had a sling and five pebbles.

While it may seem David was over-confident and in way over his head, the truth was that he had faith in God. He knew in his heart that the same God who gave him victory over the lions and bears that attacked his sheep would conquer Goliath. In fact, this ordinary lad believed this so sincerely that he was willing to back up his faith with action. David had confidence in God (1 Samuel 17).

Where once I thought I needed more self-confidence, God has shown me I only need the heart of David. The world-taught principle that I must believe I can do anything I put my mind to has yielded to a kingdom understanding that all things are possible with God(Luke 1:37).

As I grow in my relationship with God, He exchanges my old reliance on self for a new-found God-confidence.

Merit

Her beauty drew the once mighty king into adultery, treachery and murder. She knew she deserved nothing but suffering for the part she played in this horrible drama. No matter how much her heart ached with pain over the death of her beloved Uriah, she had to admit the love growing in her heart for the handsome king. It's hard to deny the advances of such a virile and powerful man (2 Samuel 11)!

Bathsheba must have struggled with the breakdown of her own moral character. Despite the fact that she was used by David to quench his own sexual appetite, she must have felt some kind of responsibility for the whole affair. Incredibly, God takes this woman who was at the center of such scandal and deception and not only gives her a son who would become king and the designated builder of God's temple, but also one of the few women mentioned in the lineage of Jesus(1 Chronicles 28:5-6, Matthew 1:6).

Once I enter into God's family through faith in Jesus Christ, I, like Bathsheba, am judged not on my own merit, but through the lenses of the grace of a loving God. By way of the blood of Jesus, I am seen as righteous by holy God. The blood of the perfect Lamb covers over all my sin, making me appear as white as snow (Isaiah 1:18). Consequently, God can give me the hope of eternal life with Him and the blessings of His favor even though I do not deserve it based on my own merit (Romans 3:21-22).

As I grow in my relationship with God, He exchanges my own lack of virtue with the righteousness that comes by faith in Jesus Christ.

Suffering

He told the truth, but it was a reality they couldn't bear to face. Infuriated by the accusations, they lashed out in anger. How could they, the prestigious leaders in the temple, men of God, be accused of the death of a trouble-maker? They had done their religion a favor in disposing of the one Stephen blasphemously called the Messiah.

As Stephen died a martyr's death, he asked God to not hold the sin of those murderers against them. Filled with the Holy Spirit before his death, he even was given a glimpse of the glory of God in heaven and Jesus standing in His rightful place of honor. Never had suffering at the hand of such evil men seem so glorious(Acts 7:51-60)!

Suffering is something I naturally try to avoid at all costs. As I grow closer to God, however, my heart will become more like Stephen's who considered persecution as an honor and a way to share in the suffering of Christ (1 Peter 4:13).

As I grow in my relationship with God, He exchanges my aversion to suffering with a desire to know Him more intimately by going through difficulties.

The life I used to live before I knew Jesus is radically different than the one I live now. I, however, can't take credit for this change as it is a work of God's Spirit within my heart. He has turned my world upside down as He has exchanged my self-confidence, dependence on my own worth, and attention to personal safety and comfort with a new-found God-confidence, righteousness by faith, and an open mind when it comes to pain and affliction. In this way, God is supernaturally shifting my value scale to line up with His.

As I begin this day, it is my prayer that I can easily let go of parts of my old life which God is calling me to release.

Choose Life

Life is full of choices. I make dozens each day, some without even thinking. Others take much prayer and consideration.

When God drew me to Jesus, enlightening me of my need for a Savior, I invited Him in as Lord of my life(John 6:44). As a result, I received the free gift of eternal life (John 3:16). Once I became a part of God's family through faith, I may have thought my choice had been made. While my salvation is secure, I still have a decision to make that will result in blessing or trouble. Will I choose life or death?

Words

I'll never be able to do that!

"With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible" (Matthew 19:26).

Why even try? I'm a failure at everything I do.

"My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness" (2 Corinthians 12:9).

I can't touch them or see them but they have the power to bring life or death into a situation. As a follower of Christ, I have the option of either using my words to tear myself and others down, or I can apply them to edify, encourage and inspire greatness.

Before I prefer life through my speech, however, I will need to get control of my thought life. I find it easy to think negative thoughts, worry about what may or may not happen, and analyze my circumstances in an effort to find a suitable solution.

Instead, to begin choosing life, I must strain my thought life through the filter of Christ. If a thought doesn't honor Him and line up with His principles, it doesn't belong in my mind (2 Corinthians 10:5). If my way of thinking is negative and self-defeating, it must be replaced with lovely, pure and praise-worthy ideas (Philippians 4:8). If I tend to think more like the world than like God, then I must intentionally cooperate with the Lord as He transforms my mind (Romans 12:2).

Once I'm on the path to pure thinking, my words will tend to take more of a godly slant. Soon, I will find myself pointing others to the life-giving words of Christ, encouraging them to carry on despite the difficulties of their circumstances. I may even notice a change in the way I speak to myself, choosing to preach the truth of the Gospel to myself in an effort to spur on my faith.

I have the power to choose either life or death in the way I speak to myself and others.

The world is filled with wisdom regarding the power of action. God also has much to say about the influence of my actions on the world around me. He says mere knowledge of Him and His ways is not enough. When it comes to His Word, He wants me to be more of a doer than just a listener (James 1:22).

Therefore, when He says that love is of the utmost importance, I better pay attention to not just doing what God calls me to do, but to saturate my obedience with love (1 Corinthians 13). It also means I must do more than just memorize the scripture that teaches me to value others above myself, but to show Him that I believe what He said by respecting all humans as His image bearers (Philippians 2:3). In addition, I can't just study about forgiveness and letting go of hurt, but I am called to make it a practice to extend the mercy and grace I am so freely given (Matthew 6:14-15).

When I take the option to do as God says, He will use me to bind wounds, soften hearts and promote healing. In these ways my actions have resulted in life, with God getting all the glory for the great things He has done.

I have the power to choose either life or death through my actions.

Everyone knows the heart is important; it determines my actions and sets the path for my feet. If my heart is not in it, the work I do will not be my best.

Samuel, the prophet and judge, learned how important the heart is to God when he was searching for the king who would replace the defiant Saul as the leader of Israel. As he followed God's lead, travelling to Bethlehem in order to meet Jesse, he examined all of this man's fine-looking sons. Judging by appearances, he determined the oldest as the one who must be God's chosen king. Much to his dismay, however, God rejected each of the men until he got to the youngest, a lad named David who God saw as a man after His own heart (Acts 13:22).

It is the heart that is important to God. While I tend to size someone up based on their skills, abilities and stature, God pays attention to something of more value(1 Samuel 16:7). Therefore, if I am to choose the way of life, I must also take note of the condition of my heart. What do I treasure? Who do I value? How do I spend my time? In what do I invest my money? These are all questions that can help me determine where my heart is located (Matthew 6:19-21).

If I'm more concerned with my bank account, making my own retirement of utmost importance, then my heart is rooted in the temporal. If, however, I'm intent on using my financial resources to build God's kingdom, I'm treasuring the eternal.

If I hold my own rights as vital, then I'll jeopardize relationships and opportunities to give a testimony in order to defend my selfish interests. If I replace that desire to uphold my own liberties with a regard for furthering the Gospel of Jesus Christ, I'll unveil my heavenly value system.

If my focus is on pleasing myself and indulging in my own sensual desires, then I'll live a shallow life. If, instead, I am centered on pleasing God and following His lead, my life will be rich and full.

I have the power to choose either life or death in the attitude of my heart.

God created His masterpieces with the ability to choose. As a result, I must decide whether I'll pick life or death in the words I speak, the actions I take and the incline of my heart. In these areas, it is my desire that I make the effort to choose life.

As I begin this day it is my prayer that I can remember the power of my words.

Face the Facts

"The LORD said to Joshua,

'Stand up!

What are you doing down on your face?

Israel has sinned; they have violated my covenant,

Which I commanded them to keep.

They have taken some of the devoted things;

they have stolen,

they have lied,

they have put them with their own possessions.

That is why the Israelites

cannot stand against their enemies;

they turn their backs and run because they have been made liable to destruction.

I will not be with you anymore unless you destroy

whatever among you is devoted to destruction.

Go, consecrate the people.

Tell them, "Consecrate yourselves in preparation for tomorrow; for this is what the LORD,

the God of Israel says:

There are devoted things among you, Israel.

You cannot stand against your enemies until you remove them."'"

Joshua 7:10-13

He must have felt like the world was against him. The hearts of the people turned away from him, favoring instead the younger, likable lad who it seemed could do no wrong. He was tormented in his soul, finding no peace even in the solace of beautiful music, seductive women or mind-numbing wine. What once was a life to be envied now became a tortuous quest to kill the one who seemed to be the root of all his troubles. If only he could extinguish David, Saul believed everything would fall back in place and things would begin to go his way(1 Samuel 18-20).

Unfortunately, Saul was deceived in his own mind. What he may have perceived as injustice and unfairness was really the result of his own disobedience to God. Once Saul ceased yielding to God and His ways, instead choosing to rule the kingdom of Israel in the way he saw fit, everything went downhill(1 Samuel 13:13-14). Saul found out the hard way that it is impossible to succeed without God's blessing.

While it may be easy to blame circumstances, bad luck or even God for the mess my life has become, I had better take a lesson from Saul. While Saul never returned to the favor of God, Joshua did heed the warning. In today's scripture reading, Joshua groveled before the Lord, lamenting the defeat of his army. God, however, brought the new leader of His people back to reality with the thought that the sin of the people is what brought destruction upon themselves. In the same way that Saul had no one to blame but himself for the downward spiral his life had become, Joshua needed to look no further than the disobedience of Achan to find the root of their problem.

In a similar way, I must face the facts. When I live in sin, failing to repent of its destructive ways, there are consequences.

Bought at a Price

His agony was palpable as He hung on the cruel cross. Blood caking to his body, streaming from his hands and feet and pouring forth from a gash on his head:Blood seemed to best represent the harsh scene. The moans of this man who was so much more than mere appearances suggested pierced the heart of even the harshest soldiers who stood by observing the scene. The suffering of Christ as He withstood the punishment meant for me cannot be denied. He paid a steep price to free me from the death sentence my sins have earned me(Isaiah 53:4-6, 2 Corinthians 5:21).

As a result of the sacrifice Jesus made for me, I enjoy new life that will last an eternity. As I live each moment with the hope of such glorious riches, I must remember that the way I choose to live is no longer a choice that belongs solely to me. Instead, my life has been bought at a price so I am called to honor God in the decisions I make(1 Corinthians 6:19-20). Even though I may view my body and the blood that pumps through it as my very own to do with as I please, the price Jesus paid to redeem me back from the grave gives Him a kind of entitlement to my every moment.

Most of the time, though, I admit that I do what I want in order to please myself. I don't often think of the price Jesus paid for me, instead taking for granted the precious gift of life I've been given. Instead of living in a way that honors His sacrifice, I often minimize His suffering by doing things that I know are displeasing to God. True worship of the One who makes life possible, however, is to offer my very life as a living sacrifice (Romans 12:1).

The fact I must face is that, as a follower of Christ, my life is no longer mine to do with as I please.

Judge Rightly

I live in a world that despises judgement of any kind. If I say a certain lifestyle is wrong, I am said to be intolerant. If I don't embrace the latest liberal agenda, I am called a bigot. If I stand up for what is right, I am ridiculed.

Since I am discouraged from making any kind of judgement call in today's free-wheeling society, it would be easy to cut myself some slack as well. After all, I'm only human, right? I may console myself with the idea that nobody's perfect; we all make mistakes.

The problem with this attitude is that I end up giving myself leniency as a result. God has called me to strive for holiness because He is a holy God(1 Peter 1:13-16). If I am to judge myself rightly, using God's intended purpose for my life as a measure, I will know whether or not I'm on the right track (Romans 12:3). If, however, I use my own kind of ruler, I will either think I'm doing better than I am or I will judge myself as worthless. Either way, I'm way off.

I remember one of the many moves my family made as a part of my husband's military career. When we arrived at our new home, we discovered several boxes were missing. I called the moving company, describing the contents which included a slow cooker. I talked about how I didn't want to do without that particular piece and looked forward to using it again. The company representative later called to tell me that they had located our belongings and would have them brought over to our home.

When that day finally came, I excitedly opened up the boxes, feeling like a kid on Christmas morn. I could not wait to see my precious belongings. With the picture of the gleaming Crock Pot firmly ingrained in my mind, I carefully removed the packing material in order to free my favorite cooking appliance from it's prison. As the man from the moving company watched, I lifted the cooker from it's nest of paper. Much to my surprise, the item I held in my hand did not match the memory I held in my mind. Instead of a shiny, polished pot, what I saw was a dingy, brown antique. My recollection of the condition of that Crock Pot was not accurate.

This is what normally happens when I think of myself, as well. I tend to see myself as better than I really am. If I want to judge rightly, then, I'll need to use the faith God has given me to see myself through His eyes. Then I will know more accurately the ways I have offended God with the sin I allow into my life, kind of like when I saw my slow cooker with new eyes; it wasn't as great as I thought it was.

The fact I must face is that, as a follower of Christ, I must judge myself rightly.

Examine my Heart

I felt perfectly justified in my anger. After all, my family had given so much to the boy. We welcomed him in as one of our own, spent time helping him with his schoolwork, taking him to church and giving him a ride when needed. My husband and I loved him as one of our very own; there was nothing we wouldn't do for him.

It hurt all the more, then, to see him go downhill, succumbing to the pressures of the group of boys he chose to hang out with. When he rang our bell one night at midnight, high on drugs and pushing his way into our home in order to clean a wound he received from a street fight, I felt nothing but anger. How could he treat us this way after all we've done for him?

Later, when I asked the Lord to examine my heart, He pointed out my own selfish point-of-view. In the same way that God loves freely, I am expected to do the same. His love is not conditional nor is it earned. As a result, this young man's behavior should in no way diminish the compassion I have for him. Instead, I expected him to reciprocate with gratitude and a show of respect.

There are many times when doing things God's way will result in poor treatment from others. While I may think I'm justified in my disappointment, only God can show me where my attitude is wrong. Once He points out the error of my thinking, then, I can turn away from my wicked, selfish ways and let Him show me the path He would have me take.

This could mean that others will think I'm a pushover as I show grace and mercy to those who don't deserve it. Other times, it could result in making a decision that seems risky and foolish as I let God give me His perspective. I could even end up moving toward pain and suffering when I'm naturally inclined to avoid it at all costs. Whatever the path, though, I can be sure that letting God reveal my selfish motives will end in pleasing Him.

The fact I must face is that, as a follower of Christ, only God can accurately read my motives.

It's easy for me to think the difficulties I find in my life are unfair. While I can complain to God, begging Him to take away the suffering, there are times when I must face the facts. Sometimes, my current circumstances are nothing more than a consequence of sin. Instead of blaming others, then, I had better buck up and come to terms with the truth. I must remember that I'm bought at a price and therefore cannot live just any old way, I must see myself with accurate, godly eyes, and I must let God examine my heart to reveal my true motives. In these ways, I'll be facing the facts that will bring me back in a right relationship with God. While my circumstances may not change, at least I'll be walking with my Father who loves me too much to leave me the way I am.

As I begin this day, it is my prayer that I can stop fooling myself into thinking I'm good enough just the way I am.

When do I cut myself slack instead of asking God what He thinks about my current choices?

How do I live just any old way instead of intentionally choosing to honor the sacrifice Jesus made for me?

Live as a Conqueror

"The priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD

stopped in the middle of the Jordan

and stood on dry ground,

while all Israel passed by until the whole nation

had completed the crossing on dry ground."

Joshua 3:17

I wonder if Joshua stood at the banks of the swollen Jordan River, the only thing standing between his people and the land God had promised them, and wondered how he would lead his people across? Sure, the two spies were able to negotiate the raging river, he might have thought, but they were young, strong, and unencumbered. The multitudes I am responsible for carry all their belongings with them. There are mothers with young children and tiny babies, livestock and inexperienced men and women; so much to make us vulnerable.

Then the words of the Lord must have fortified his heart as he reminded himself of the truth. Be strong and courageous. Don't be discouraged or afraid because God is with me. He told me I would lead these people into the promised land. He didn't tell me how I would lead them; He only said I would lead them. I must trust God to negotiate this obstacle for me. (Joshua 1:1-11)

Like Joshua, there is much in life to dishearten me and cause me to question. How will I make it until the next paycheck? When will the pain stop? What will it take to mend my broken family? It's easy to have many questions but no answers. I want to trust God but I may think, I just don't see how He can work this out.

There is no obstacle so great that it can separate me from the promises of God. Just as He went so far as to stop the flow of the flooding Jordan River in order to deliver His people to the land He had given to them, there is nothing so great a barrier as to keep me from my promised land. As Moses reminded the people of Israel when they were trapped between the approaching Egyptian army and the Red sea, "The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still" (Exodus 14:14).

No Enemy Too Great

He must have felt like the world was out to get him. First, he was sold into slavery by his own brothers. Then, his master's wife falsely accused him of rape and he was thrown into prison. As if that weren't enough, he languished there for 8 years when he finally thought he'd get a break. He interpreted the dreams of two prisoners, pleading with them to put in a good word for him, but they obviously forgot about him. Finally, a couple years later, Joseph was summoned to the Pharaoh to try to decode the message of the ruler's haunting dreams. Finally, his day had come! (Genesis 37, 39-41)

Joseph didn't do anything to deserve the treatment he received. He must have sometimes felt as if he had an enemy too great to resist. How else could so many bad things happen to him? Someone must be waging war against him.

While this was not the case for Joseph, it is for me. As a follower of Christ, I do have an enemy; a foe who is prowling, ". . . around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour" (1 Peter 5:8). Satan's mission here on earth is to, "steal and kill and destroy" (John 10:10). As he wages war against me, planting seeds of doubt in my heart, sending people to rise up against me, setting up obstacles designed to dishearten me, I can take courage with the truth that, "If God is for [me], who can be against [me]" (Romans 8:31)?

God went so far as to send His beloved Son to the earth He created, placing Him in the hands of wicked men in order to conquer sin and death for me. If He was willing to go to such lengths in order to defeat such formidable enemies, is anything impossible or off-limits for Him (Romans 8:32)?

Therefore, I can trust Him to fight my battles for me. Even though the doctors say I have two months to live, cancer is no match for the Great Physician. If the mounting debt threatens to bring me down, I can take heart in the thought that my heavenly Father has resources about which I know nothing. When strife seems to rule my home, driving out the peace, I can trust God to soften the brittle hearts of those I love.

There is no enemy so great that God is not stronger still.

No Charge too Formidable

I wanted to defend myself against the ridiculous rumors floating around the neighborhood. A couple of the kids in our afterschool program alerted me to the gossip they had heard about me. "Mrs. Boose, the story is that you are having an affair with another man and have been meeting him up at the pool."

At first I laughed at the absurdity of the idea. "If I were going to cheat on you," I asked my husband, "why would I do it at the neighborhood pool?" Clearly, this was a tale cooked up by a child, but the fallout could be disastrous. My name could potentially be slandered to the point that I could lose credibility as a neighborhood volunteer and teacher in our home-based outreach program. What if people believe this lie? It could really bring damage to my reputation and ultimately bring shame upon the name of the Lord.

Thankfully, God protected me from harm, shielding both my good standing and His holy name. I never had to say a word in my defense. Instead, God revealed the truth over time and the lies faded away.

God is the only One who can justify. Since He is in charge of fighting my battles for me, there is no need for me to try to prove my innocence when accusations fly. Instead, I can rest in the hands of my perfect Defender.

Furthermore, since I have Jesus as my defense lawyer, I never need to worry that my sin might condemn me to death. There is no transgression so great that the blood of Jesus cannot cover. Through his sacrifice, then, I find peace with God even though I've been convicted as one who has fallen short of His standard. (Romans 8:33-34, 2 Corinthians 5:21)

What, then, can man say to diminish my standing with God? If I've already been pardoned from the worst, what more can be said or done against me? Let the accusations fly because I've been appointed the best defense Counsel ever known to mankind (1 Timothy 2:5)!

Therefore, what's a little heartache at the hands of another in the here and now? Even if I land in prison based on the word of another, my eternal reward is still intact. Despite the fact that I may lose my job due to the false testimony of a coworker, my place in God's kingdom is not diminished in the least. Regardless of whether or not my loved ones believe in my innocence, my Father only sees the purity of heart He originally created for me and is now possible through the blood of Jesus.

There is no charge so formidable that God cannot justify.

No Hurdle too High

I wanted nothing more than for the struggle to be over. I was tired of living a frugal life and looked forward to a day when money would be plentiful, when a trip to the grocery store was not an exercise in restraint and when gifts for others didn't have to be homemade. I had grown weary of the fight.

As I sat with the Lord one morning, asking Him again to deliver us from the latest problem, He showed me the error of my ways. To state it more accurately, He showed me the corruption of my heart.

Instead of seeing all I could buy without money, I chose to pay attention to what I couldn't have. While God had prepared a veritable feast for me, I still preferred to dine at the pauper's table (Isaiah 55:1-2). Even though I am abounding in the love my Father has lavished upon me, I focused mainly on the difficulties(1 John 3:1). Although God's mercies are new every morning, making it possible for me to live a rich and meaningful life filled with peace, I ignored those treasures and looked mainly at my disappointments(Lamentations 3:22-24).

It's easy to get caught up in a cycle of seeing what I don't have instead of what I do. Through faith in Jesus Christ, I not only have the assurance of eternal life, but I also have the security of knowing there is nothing that can separate me from the astounding love of God. This love can propel me through any hardship, satisfy in ways the world cannot, and bolster my faint heart in the midst of calamity (Romans 8:35-36). The love of God should be my most prized possession because it is what best defines Him(1 John 4:16).

There is no hurdle so high that the love of God is not higher still.

Life is hard. I am constantly faced with those who seem out to get me, with accusations that seem impossible against which to defend, and difficulties that threaten to block God's love from my life. Thankfully, there is no obstacle so great that God is not bigger still. This day, then, I desire to live the life of a perfectly protected, eternally justified, and wholly loved conqueror!

As I begin this day it is my prayer that I will focus on what God has done instead of what I think is lacking.

How do I live as a victim instead of as one who has God as her Warrior?
