Detailed Report for GTA4

eZ' wrote a Detailed Report for the PC version of the fourth/sixth/ninth (depending on how you count them) game in Rockstar's popular Grand Theft Auto series. This one just misses certification due to two blemishes - the 2D screens have some bugs and inconsistencies in how the screen elements scale in widescreen, and the cut-scenes get cropped at the sides when using 16:10 resolutions. On the bright side, this is the first GTA to feature proper hor + gameplay out of the box.

We've uploaded the video to YouTube and posted it in the WSGF Video Gallery.

WSGF Videos Updated to 720p HD YouTube

I've gone through and updated the videos in the Gallery (and re-uploading to YouTube where needed), to take advantage of YouTube's new offerings. The default video format and resolution is now the "High Quality" version displayed at 840x525 (1/4 of 1680x1050). Under each video is a link to view the 720p version in full 1280x720. It's really nice to see the videos in HD; and the Surround videos have a much bigger impact now.

King's Bounty: The Legend reported

YouTube Goes HD Widescreen

infernus posted a few days ago that YouTube had gone widescreen. This certainly helps all of our videos, and makes the Surround Gaming videos easier to see. In addition, most everything uploaded after May 2008 is available in 720p HD. By adding "&fmt=22" to the end of the video URL, the video will play in 720p (if available). The "&fmt=18" string still works to get rougly 480p resolution. I will be re-uploading all our older videos to the WSGF YouTube Channel so we can take advantage of the new 720p capabilities.

The site recently celebrated its 5th anniversary, and it has certainly grown in ways I could never have imagined. Thank you to everyone who has helped me the site a success through donations of your time and money.

There is still a little bit to go on the Racer_S drive. If you're able, please help us get over that fundraising goal. This is our big way to thank Racer_S for all that he's done over the years, and to help ensure he has the setup to keep producing solutions.

The game gets a Grade of B. It has Hor+ game play, all the way to wide Surround. However, the menus and HUD were made for 4:3 and stretch in widescreen.

World of Warcraft Certified

Four years after its Vert- debut, the WoW client has been updated with proper Hor+ support. Read Ibrin's Detailed Report for the details. There are still some minor quirks present. The login and character select/creation screens use the old Vert- behavior, and the new Hor+ behavior doesn't kick in until the actual gameplay session begins. Also, although the FMVs are anamorphic at 16:10 resolutions, they are slightly Vert- at 16:9 resolutions. Both were considered to be negligible enough to be overlooked.

Xbox 360 Launches NXE with 1440x900 and 1680x1050 Support

If you play (or plan to play) an Xbox 360 on a 20" or 22" monitor, you're in luck. The New Xbox Experience (NXE) supports 1440x900 or 1680x1050 as a native resolution over VGA and HDMI. This ensures that the new Dashboard and games scale properly.

The new dashboard makes good use of the increased resolutions, and the new Netflix streaming service looks fantastic. Here's no avoiding scaling every time you can. Enjoy! Hit up this thread to add your Xbox Live GamerTag to the WSGF community list.

We are now taking donations so that we can get three widescreens to go along with it. Racer_S has been invaluable to the WSGF community with his widescreen and Surround hacks. He has done all of this while working on an old 4:3 monitor.
If you have ever used one of his hacks or patches, please donate so that we can finally give back to him. See the links in the left nav to donate through PayPal or Amazon.

We have a Detailed Report for Valve's upcoming zombie apocalypse themed shooter based on the public demo released today. As is usual with Valve's Source-powered games, it appears to support widescreen flawlessly. However, since the report is based on a demo and not the full game, it isn't eligible for certification until the full version comes out and somebody tests it and confirms that it has no miscellaneous flaws.

GeneralAdmission Wins the TH2Go Contest with BFME2 WS and TH Mods

Two months ago the WSGF launched a contest to win my TripleHead2Go setup - a TripleHead2Go, Ergotron triple monitor stand, and Ibrin's three HP LP1965 monitors. GeneralAdmission won the contest with his widescreen and TripleHead mods for Battle for Middle Earth II. These extensive mods update the campaign maps in both games to work with widescreen and TripleHead displays.

You can download all the mods at the Battle For Middle Earth 2 Camera Fix page. General Admission also made a trailer to show off his handiwork. Additionally, Dem Pyros make a very poignant video where his old CRT throws sets itself out on the curb for recycling, after seeing the new widescreen that had installed.

Detailed Report for Fallout 3

Tanuki has written a Detailed Report for Bethesda's take on the Fallout universe. It misses Certification on the grounds that it requires some tinkering around in the config files to get proper FOV for the 2D scenes (as well as to enable some resolutions). This tweaking produces as a side effect of the character portrait being misaligned in the character creation screens. We are hopeful that Bethesda will patch these minor issues. Their previous release, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion was Certified.

We gave out a total of five awards in three categories. The first award was the Field of Vision Award, for those developers who do an exemplary job in supporting widescreen. Winners were Valve Software and Introversion Software.
The second award was the Narrow Minded Award, for those developers who actively hamper widescreen implementation. Winners were DICE and EA Sports. The last award was the WS Game of the Year, as voted by forum members. The Winner was Call of Duty 4.

You can get more details (and see pictures of the awards we are sending to the winners) at the 2008 Awards Page.
Lego Batman Almost Gets Certified

The last two games in the series (Star Wars: Original Trilogy, and Indiana Jones) were Certified as having perfect widescreen support. Lego Batman barely misses the mark, and received a B+ in its Detailed Report. The reason for falling short is that it's FMV sequences are vertically stretched on a 16:9 screen, having been formatted for 16:10. The previous games didn't suffer this issue, as they only contained cut-scenes rendered in realtime.

I've posted the video to our Video Gallery and uploaded it to all of our video communities.

In addition, it seems that Vimeo did not delete the WSGF content, after they came down with their "no gaming videos" edict. Check out the Conan video on Vimeo. It's my favorite version, as you can watch it in 720p HD, and download the source MP4 file.

The game earned a Grade of B, offering native Hor+ widescreen support. The only issue being that the game is keyed for full widescreen support at 16:10, slightly stretching the HUD and FMV sequences at 16:9.

The screen change adds a bit to the sides, takes a bit from the top, but takes a lot from the bottom, making this another C+ vert - game.

We thought it would be a good idea to re-link to our Widescreen Guide, covering all the games included in the bundle. Many of the original games have poor widescreen support, but the modding community has updated most of the games with poor support. Our guide teaches you how to convert and update each original game to optimize your widescreen experience.

American McGee's Grimm is Vert -

It cuts off the top and bottom in widescreen, and since this is a 3D platformer, losing the bottom part of the screen can rather complicate the gameplay. The game gets a C+ due to its vert - screen change (game quality not being a factor here, fortunately for it).
Matrox Updates DTH2Go with Support for 3x1440x900 and 3x1680x1050

Matrox announced today that a firmware update to the Matrox TripleHead2Go Digital Edition bring support for 3x1440x900 and 3x1680x1050. This is a great milestone for the product, as it enables native support in 3xWS for 19" - 22" panels.

Most users found the 3x1280x800 too small a monitor size, so they opted for 3x1280x1024. This new support will allow for a much larger native panel size; and it will allow for a game to be played in widescreen, when Surround is not supported. Read (and discuss) the announcement in this forum thread.

Vimeo has a great Flash player, which I have embedded into the site at the new Video Gallery. We chose to use Vimeo as our primary video community as they allow you to watch videos in their full 720p HD resolution on the Vimeo site, as well as download the original 1280x720 MPEG-4 video. In addition to Vimeo (and the existing YouTube Channel), I have uploaded the videos to Viddler and GameVee.
1440x900 Monitors Updated on the Master Monitor List

Ascii_Aficionado has been working hard to add missing monitor pages from the Master Monitor List on the WSGF Wiki. He's added over two dozen more pages, completing all the missing pages on panels in the 17" - 19" range. This fills in every single missing page from the Master Monitor List. Thanks to Ascii for all of his hard work. Now it's time to see if any new monitors have been released since the last time we reviewed the table.

Pro Evolution 5 / Winning Eleven 9

The game offers proper widescreen for 1280x768 and 1280x800. For widescreen beyond that, you will need a .cfg hack using Kitserver 5. Pretty much a royal pain. But, if you're a fan of the game, it's worth it. All resolutions offer proper Hor+ support.

They both support the proper aspects, are Hor+, and don't stretch the HUD. All we need is to confirm the games run at the high-end resolutions. Visit the Detailed Reports and help us Certify these games.

Mass Effect

Like most all Unreal3 engine games, Mass Effect is Vert-. There is an FOV adjustment available, through some considerable hacking. But, it breaks Sniper Mode, so it's not a valid solution. Check out the Detailed Report.

Penny Arcade Adventures: Episode 1

There has been an ongoing Insider discussion around the widescreen support of the first installment of the Penny Arcade Adventures. The game is anamorphic - tuned to a 16:10 display. This means that it letterboxes on a 4:3 display, and pillarboxes on a 16:9 display.

After much discussion, it was decided that this type of support warrants a grade of B (rather than C). Once we can confirm that the game supports 1280x768, 1680x1050, and 1920x1200, it will get it's grade of B+. If you're playing at any or all of these resolutions, please post a screenshot on the Detailed Report.
