Good Friday afternoon! Our local weather has turned out very nice today, thanks to a cooler and dry airmass. Most areas reached the lower 80s this afternoon under a full day of sunshine. Since the air over Alabama is very dry, temperatures will drop fast this evening. Areas will reach the middle 70s at 7pm and middle 60s at 10pm. Lows will reach the lower 50s tonight. I wouldn’t be shocked if a few upper 40s show up north of I-20. For late May, we will deal with some chilly nights over the weekend.

The entire Memorial Day Weekend is looking really nice. We can expect sunny skies and dry air on Saturday and Sunday, with afternoon highs in the middle 80s on Saturday and upper 80s on Sunday and Monday. Lows will remain cool, with lower 50s tonight and Saturday night. We’ll gradually increase into the upper 50s Sunday night and lower 60s Monday night. A surface high will remain close by through Monday, so our weather will feature quiet weather.

Early next week, a light south breeze will take over. We can expect hot and rather humid weather to gradually make a return, especially by mid week. Look for daytime temperatures to reach the lower 90s, with lows in the lower to middle 60s. Skies become partly cloudy by the middle of next week.

If you have a beach trip planned to Alabama’s Gulf Coast over the holiday weekend, the weather is looking good. Highs will reach the upper 80s Saturday through Monday, with lows in the 60s. Skies will remain sunny for the entire weekend. Water temperatures have now warmed to around 80 degrees, which is rather cool for some…

Good Thursday afternoon! Our local weather has turned out hot and dry this afternoon. Most areas have reached the upper 80s, with a couple of spots reaching 90. At 6pm, 99% of Alabama was dry, but one lone shower has formed over southwest Hale County. That lone shower will die out quickly this evening and the rest of Alabama will stay dry. A cold front is moving into Alabama from the north, but there’s little to no risk of rain ahead of the surface front. You’ll notice an increase in wind this evening and tonight, as the front moves through our state. Winds will range from 5 to 10mph out of the north this evening and tonight.

Temperatures will fall to around 70 degrees at 10pm tonight and middle 60s at midnight. Most areas across west and central Alabama will range from 58 to 62 degrees for lows. Skies will remain clear overnight tonight. Friday is looking great as dry and cooler air take over. Highs will reach the lower 80s for areas near and south of I-20 and upper 70s north of I-20. Skies will remain sunny on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. The entire Memorial Day Weekend is looking nice! Highs will warm into the middle to upper 80s on Saturday and Sunday. Lows at night will fall into the lower 50s Friday night and Saturday night. Some upper 40s are possible north of I-20.

There are no changes in the forecast for early next week, as our local weather will call for sunny skies and highs in the upper 80s. Humidity will gradually increase by mid-week.

Good Wednesday afternoon! As of 5:45pm, parts of west and central Alabama are dealing with scattered showers and storms; in-fact, some spots are getting a downpour. After sunset, showers and storms will quickly diminish, and the risk of rain drops to only 10% for the rest of the night and Thursday. After 8pm, most areas will stay rain free for the next 6 or 7 days.

A weak cold front will move through Alabama tonight, which will help to clear our weather just a bit for the rest of the night and day on Thursday. Skies will become partly cloudy on Thursday, with mostly dry conditions. As a secondary cold front moves through Alabama, we could see a stray shower or two after lunch on Thursday, but most areas will remain dry. Dry and cooler air will take over Thursday night and on Friday, which will set the area up for a great looking Memorial Day Weekend! Look for low humidity, cooler temperatures and sunny skies for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Highs will struggle to reach the lower 80s on Friday; in-fact, areas north of I-20 may remain in the 70s for highs. Temperatures will drop into the lower 50s Friday night and Saturday night, which will be a big change.

As the upper air trough moves east of Alabama, we’ll notice a gradual warming trend on Sunday and Monday, with highs reaching the upper 80s. Lower 90s are possible on Tuesday and Wednesday, with lows at night warming into the lower 60s. Humidity will remain pretty low for the entire weekend and to start off next week, as an east wind cuts off the Gulf moisture from moving back into Alabama. There is no risk of rain over the weekend and into the early part of next week.

As of 4pm Wednesday, scattered showers and storms have developed on radar. Most of west and central Alabama is dry at this hour, but other spots are getting a downpour. There’s a severe thunderstorm moving northeast across northern Shelby County at this hour. I expect that storm to weaken over the next couple of hours and drop below severe limits, as it moves into and through St Clair County between 4:45pm and 6pm. Gusty winds and hail are the main risk with that one severe storm.

Other showers and storms are well below severe limits. Another batch of storms is moving through Sumter County and will soon impact parts of Greene, Hale and Marengo County between now and 6pm. This batch of storms is moving northeast at around 30mph. I don’t see any signs of additional severe storms this afternoon and evening.

Other areas across Alabama are mostly dry, but if you haven’t seen rain today, there is still a chance you’ll get a quick downpour before the risk of rain ends after 9pm tonight.

Good Tuesday afternoon! We are watching another severe weather outbreak happening to the west of Alabama this afternoon, which is one of several days of deadly weather. Today will be the last major severe weather day, as the storm system weakens tonight and on Wednesday.

Above is the forecast severe weather from the Storm Prediction Center for Wednesday. The map above shows the severe weather risk being north of Alabama (Tennessee and points north). There is a “See Text” over our area, which means there is a very low chance of a severe storm or two in our area. The risk is not high enough to post a slight risk, atleast at this time. Lets keep an eye on this system, due to the horrible past few days. While the system will be much weaker once it reaches us, I can’t rule out a storm reaching severe limits. The good news… Wind shear and dynamics will be very limited over Alabama, so that should prevent any issues. The cold front will reach west Alabama during the evening hours on Wednesday. We’ll notice scattered showers and storms increase through the day. I do not expect rain all day on Wednesday, but have the umbrella handy.

The rain will quickly decrease in coverage Wednesday night, as drier air takes over from the northwest. Skies will remain partly to mostly cloudy Wednesday night. As for Thursday, a passing shower or two will become possible as a secondary cold front moves into Alabama. The front will come through mainly in dry fashion, so don’t expect a soaking rain on Thursday. Highs will reach the upper 80s on Thursday, as skies become partly cloudy. The secondary cold front will move through Thursday evening.

Much drier air will come in on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Dewpoints will drop into the 40s to 50s, which will feel great for the weekend! Expect lots of sun on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Highs will cool into the middle 80s on Friday and Saturday, with lows both nights in the upper 50s. The dry and sunny weather will be perfect for Memorial Day weekend.

Memorial Day on Monday will feature a sunny sky and mild temperatures. Highs will reach the upper 80s on Monday. Lower 90s become possible on Tuesday.

Good Monday evening! Sorry I’m getting the weather forecast on later than normal. Things have been really busy since the big tornado outbreak west of Alabama this afternoon. A quick update on that… There were lots of tornadoes produced across the Oklahoma and Texas areas, but one tornado managed to do something we all fear, move over a huge population center. As we (from Alabama) understand, a tornado in a large population can be a disaster; especially a very large tornado. As of 8:30pm, the death toll was up to 51 and rising. Reports show the tornado was atleast an EF-4, with a likely upgrade to EF-5. The damage path was 2.25 miles wide in spots. This makes the tornado one of the widest in US History. The National Weather Service will have more information on this soon. I’ll be sure to post the info.

As for our local weather, we have no worries for severe weather at this time. The storm system that produced the outbreak over the weekend and today will produce one more tornado outbreak tomorrow. This outbreak will occur over parts of Louisiana and Arkansas, where tornadoes, large hail and wind damage are all likely. After Tuesday, the storm system will weaken quickly before reaching us on Wednesday. The best shear and dynamics will pass well north of Alabama, so I don’t expect tornadoes around here on Wednesday.

Tuesday will remain hot in Alabama, with highs in the lower 90s. Skies will remain mostly sunny on Tuesday. Heat index values will reach the middle 90s in spots. A cold front will reach our area on Wednesday, with a good chance of scattered showers and storms. Rain chances are at 50%, so not everyone will get rain. Again, I do not expect severe weather around here with that system, but I’ll keep an eye on it.

Dry air takes over on Thursday and Friday, with a decrease in humidity. Highs will remain in the 80s, but lows will fall into the upper 50s or lower 60s Thursday night and Friday night.

We began to feel the impacts of the much-advertised mid-level ridge across west Alabama this afternoon. This ridge is beginning to slowly nudge in from the west, and as a result, the concentration of showers and storms shifted east of us into eastern Alabama and western Georgia today. Models remain in good agreement that this ridge will continue shifting eastward during the day Monday, giving us mostly clear conditions and afternoon highs right around 90!

Meanwhile, a major severe weather outbreak unfolded across the central Plains this afternoon, and another round of major severe weather is expected tomorrow across parts of eastern Oklahoma, southwestern Missouri, and western Arkansas in association with a powerful storm system. Here in west Alabama though, we will stay dry through Tuesday with just a few more clouds to talk about Tuesday afternoon as highs once again top out around 90 degrees.

The storm system responsible for all the severe weather in the Plains will finally begin to impact our neck of the woods by Wednesday. The good news is that the main dynamics associated with it will be pushing well to our north, which means our severe weather threat will be minimal at best. In fact, I’m only expecting a few strong storms with no organized severe weather in the cards as of now, but as always stay tuned as finer details are resolved.

The frontal boundary will be slow to push through the area, and may stall across south-central Alabama by Thursday. Therefore, I’m a little hesitant to completely remove rain chances for Thursday, but I do think the higher coverage of any rain and storms will be across south Alabama at this time. High pressure looks to try and build for Friday which should keep us dry, but a easterly to southeasterly flow returns by the weekend, resulting in a gradual increase in moisture. A few showers or storms could show up on the radar by Sunday afternoon.

Much of west Alabama has stayed dry thus far on this Saturday as temperatures remain in the mid 70s to lower 80s across the area though it is quite muggy; dew point temperatures remain around 70 degrees. Some shower activity located over northwest Tennessee will drift southeastward overnight tonight, and a stray shower or storm is possible…however I think the highest chance of seeing any stray showers or storms will be along and east of I-65 after Midnight across northeast Alabama. This looks to continue tomorrow as well, as most short term high-resolution guidance is suggesting any shower activity will be over northeast and east Alabama tomorrow in association with a subtle vorticity lobe moving through the northwest flow aloft. Meanwhile, a powerful storm system in the nation’s mid-section will likely bring a severe weather outbreak to portions of Oklahoma and Kansas into Missouri tomorrow.

Around this way though, mid-level ridging settles in for Monday and into Tuesday. What this should mean is an overall decrease in cloud cover and increase in afternoon temperatures. Some spots in west Alabama have the chance to crack the 9-0 on the thermometer each day. This ridge will be stubborn and help slow the eastward advancement of a trough of low pressure currently located over the central Plains, but the trough will finally win the battle by mid-week.

We will eventually have a frontal system approach the area for Wednesday and into Thursday. With most of the energy pulling way to our north, I’m not expecting anything too organized in the severe weather department at this time. But, we can expect scattered showers and storms late Wednesday and more likely during the day Thursday. A few strong storms are certainly possible as highs stay in the upper 80s.

For the weekend, the Euro model is more bullish on the idea of a large mid-level ridge building into the southeast that’s actually stronger than the one we are forecasting for Monday and Tuesday. If this solution were to be correct, temperatures would likely get into the 91-94 range. But, the GFS keeps heights a little lower through the weekend, which would mean temperatures in the mid to upper 80s most likely. So stay tuned through the week as the weekend forecast will probably need some tweaking as models come into better agreement.

Good Friday evening! After most areas across west and central Alabamaa dealt with rain and thunderstorms, the coverage of rain is gradually decreasing. As of 10:30pm, a few scattered storms are drifting across the area. We can expect most storms to die out tonight, but a few isolated storms will continue. Lows will fall into the upper 60s tonight, with some fog.

Saturday will feature the risk of scattered showers and storms, but not everyone will get rain and storms won’t last long at all. If a scattered storm moves over your area this weekend, it shouldn’t last more than an hour. Overall, the weekend forecast is looking fair. Look for a partly cloudy sky and very humid conditions. Highs will reach the 80s through the entire weekend and lower 90s on Monday. The best chance of scattered storms over the weekend will occur north of I-20.
