An Undiscovered Private Bass Lake??Papa John's Campground, Summerfield, LA

Yesterday I found a wonderful little undiscovered bass lake at Papa John’s Campground loaded with Florida bass! It is private, so you don’t have to have a Louisiana license to fish there.

Papa John’s Campground is a delightfully peaceful area of Claiborne Parish (that’s “county” for you non-Louisianans) in north Louisiana. It is 20 minutes from Eldorado, AR, 50 minutes drive from Ruston, LA, and 1 hour from Monroe, LA.

The lake is 10 years old so the fishing stock is well established, but they have rented campsites for only about 2 years. Believe me, it is undiscovered! But it won’t be for long.

For day fishing, they only charge $10/day/person! And for the fish they have, that’s a real bargain. They also rent boats and only allow electric motors.

Here is something to use to go after those big bass.

These Live Pointers will do the trick!

They have several automatic feeders that feed the fish twice a day.

Oh, yes, they do have a bunch of bream and white perch, if that is your pleasure.

Imagine yourself casting into one of the holes in Papa John’s lake and taking a few of his bass. Can life be any sweeter?

Call now, 318-927-2603 Days or 318-927-6023 Nights, to make your camping reservations.

Shhhh! Don’t dare tell a bunch of your fishing buddies, or it won’t be “undiscovered” for long!

Happy Bass Fishing!

The whole issue of portable fish finders is revolutionizing fishing for the fisherman. Imagine being able to see individual fish under obstructions or overhangs, whether you are in a boat or wade fishing. Go after only the largest ones!

Here is one of the most useful. You can float the transducer away from your own location. Other models allow you to put the unit head in the water and point it.

Simply turn on, toss the floating transducer into the water, then view the screen for instant fish, depth, and bottom structure readings.

Take your portable fish finder with you anywhere you fish, no matter how remote or secluded. Just place it in your pocket or tacklebox. Fish finding technology is now available to you where it wasn’t before with or without using a boat.

Because HawkEye Portable Fish Finders operate on batteries, there’s no need for a 12-volt power source and no need for installation. Our portable fish finders will keep both your hands free and help you find those hiding fish.

Don’t come back empty handed, get one of these jewels today!

Cortland's 555 High Float Dyna-Tip fly line highlights for trout fishermen.

The Fly Fishing Column: A Product Update© Cortland’s 555 High Float Dyna-TipBy Doug Macnair

This report rounds out the Triad of reviews dealing with Cortland’s fly line highlights for 2005. Thus far, we’ve covered the 444 Sylk and the 444SL Precision Taper, now comes the 555 High Float Dyna-Tip. It is the final nail in what is one of the finest crafted coffins in the world—it’s the only coffin that I know of that will make your fly fishing game more alive than ever. I call that a creative coffin … And since a coffin is a vault of sorts, it seems a good place safeguard these lines when not in use – they are valuable!

The 555 High Float Dyna-Tip. This is a great addition to a continuing history of great fly lines. The High Float does just exactly that – float high. That means, of course, less effort on your part when lifting into the backcast. It also means less disturbance to the water’s surface during the lift. Remember those roster-tails you usually have? They become a thing of the past, provided of course, that you don’t get sloppy in your casting stroke.

Unlike most of the other 555s, the High Float does not have a chambered mono core; instead, the core is braided nylon. Other than that, the High Float enjoys the attributes of remainder of the 555 family. Let there be no doubt, the Cortland High Float is one helluva line. Perhaps more remarkably than anything else, it’s purported to have the lowest specific gravity in the industry. (I’ve heard it’s less than 6.) Little wonder it floats so high! To be sure, it is a joy to handle. . . . (For the rest of this fine review, go here.)

Make Fish Stories Reality

by Dustin Taylor

Fish stories are famous for telling the tale of the one that got away. That’s about all losing a fish is good for. Sure your buddies will get a laugh, your friend in the boat might rib you the rest of the day. You on the other hand, have to bear the harassment. When fishing a tournament the fish story could be deemed as an excuse. Fishermen are full of excuses. As fishermen we should do everything in our ability to eliminate the excuse factor.

Crankbaits, Jerkbaits, and some top waters are famous for losing fish. These baits have gotten this reputation because of treble hooks. First thing you should do with these baits is make sure the hooks are attached to the bait itself with a split ring. Yes, there are still a few baits on the market that do not have free floating hooks. If your hooks do not swing freely, they will lodge, and it will become easier for the fish to throw your bait. . . . (For the rest of this fine article, go here.)

One of the most important steps in getting sponsored to fish tournaments (whether you fish for bass, walleye, crappie, musky, redfish, marlin, etc.) is to focus on what YOU CAN DO for your sponsor not what your sponsor can do for you. When trying to obtain sponsorship from a company, first make a list of the things you could provide for your sponsor.

Put yourself in the potential sponsors shoes. Does he want to give you money so you can fish? More than likely he or she doesn’t want to do that. No matter what type of business you are contacting for sponsorship, they want to know what’s in it for me! In other words, WHAT WILL YOU DO FOR ME?

To answer that question, pretend you were in your senior year in high school and your senior paper had to be written on: TEN WAYS TO PROMOTE A POTENTIAL SPONSOR. If that were the case you would do all the research possible to find 10 ways to do it and then write your paper. . . . (For the rest of this article, go here.)

What a depth and fish finder! Look at this GPS mapping depth and fish finder series. It puts all the data including a map with weather into a single display.

Look at this! These Garmin’s with GPS mapping are magnificent! What was fishing like before they developed these? Soon we won’t be able to remember.

These are much more than depth or fish finders, they make it unfair to the fish!

The GPSMAP 3010C and the GPSMAP 3006C launch Garmin into the world of Marine networking, with plug-and-play systems that put GPS, weather, sonar, radar, and other important data at boaters’ fingertips.

Both units are waterproof and feature a sunlight readable, 256-color, 640×480-pixel VGA display. The screen size for the GPSMAP 3010C is 10.4” diagonal. These multifunction displays (MFDs) are powered by a high-speed processor and graphics controller for fast redraw of charts and weather graphics. They communicate with the Garmin Marine Network through a 100-megabit Garmin-proprietary ethernet-based network. The entire system is waterproof and completely plug-and-play—the MFDs automatically detect any and all peripherals once they’re connected. Boaters can connect a GPS antenna and one remote sensor directly to the MFD. Or, with the addition of the GMS™ 10 Network Port Expander, users can connect multiple MFDs and sensors to the same network. Each networked MFD can be configured independently.

A unique feature to the Garmin Marine Network is the addition of the GDL™ 30 weather data receiver. Through a partnership with XM WX Satellite Weather, North American mariners can—for the first time—access real-time graphical weather data directly on the GPSMAP 3010C or 3006C—without the need for a separate PC interface. For those wanting more than 120 channels of XM Satellite Radio along with weather data, Garmin also offers the GDL 30A—which provides a unique audio-channel interface on the 3010C and 3006C that allows for connection to an on-board stereo.

GPSMAP 3000 series products receive sonar data through the GSD 20, a proprietary “black box” sounder which offers 4,000 watts of peak-to-peak power (500 watts RMS) in a dual-frequency transducer. The Garmin Marine Network will be compatible with Garmin’s new marine radar that is expected for the 2005 marine season. More information on the radar should be available in late 2004.

The Garmin Marine Network also offers a unique network upgrade system. The user simply prompts the MFD to read the current software version of all components within the network, and writes them onto a Garmin data card. Then the user uploads this data via a PC to the Garmin website, where the newest software versions are downloaded to the data card. The entire system is automatically updated once the card is re-inserted into the MFD.

Astro Tables are better than simple "moon tables" for determining best fishing times or best times to fish

Here is an excellent way to predict the feeding schedules of the fish you are after. Know the best times to fish or the best fishing times in advance of your fishing trip.

Using Lunar Tables: Lunar Tables are far more effective than “moon tables” because they take into account critical solar energies as well as lunar.

Some tips on their use: The “Best Days” column is based on the ever-changing positions of the sun and the moon, rating each day on a scale of 0 to 100. The higher the number, the more solar/lunar influence that day is experiencing (see “Value” column or corresponding black bars).

April 2005 (Go to the example here)

The “Lunar Periods” section lists the times the moon is overhead and underfoot each day. The length of a lunar period can range from one hour to three-and-one-half hours, depending on a number of important lunar cycles, such as how close the moon is to the earth that day and how high its orbit is. Also, the section uses solar symbols (see key at bottom of each month) to alert you when a lunar period is occuring at the same time as a solar period (eg, dawn, high-noon and dusk).

PrimeTime data is based on solar/lunar research at a leading college of astrophysics and our own research pond/wildlife area. Annual data is supplied by the U.S. Naval Observatory. All lunar times are adjusted to the center of your time zone and for Daylight Saving Time.

The beautiful leaves in the fall add even more to its appeal.

The Spirea ‘Renaissance’, Spirea vanhouttei ‘Renaissance’, has improved disease resistance. This bridal wreath like plant shares the same arching displays of snow white flowers as its old time parent. Arching boughs blossom in mid to late spring that are stunning on cloudy days or in moonlight. Popular cut flower for wreath making. Fountain shape makes ideal specimen or dark green background shrub which turns orange-red in the fall. A deciduous shrub that should be placed in full sun.
