Fashion blogger Temi Otedola has said that singer Mr Eazi was rude to her the first time they met, Igbere TV reports.

The 24-year-old revealed this on the first episode of their podcast ‘How Far’ on Friday.

Talking about their first date, Temi said she was only being nice to Mr Eazi.

“I did not know he was going to be there that night, me being someone who likes to be friendly to strangers I was like hey do you live in London?” she said.

“Can I get you a drink? what have you been up to? I was just on my usual cute lets be nice lets meet people vibes and I was like this guy is an asshole like why is he being so rude?”

Mr Eazi replied her saying,
“I was trying to let you know that hey I’m not interested, I’m just here to watch this person and not interested in moving to you.”

He also revealed that he texted her and she took her time to reply.

“I started texting Temi and she was replying to be honest but she was taking her time to reply. So I text her like 10am she will reply me at 12,” he said.

Temi and Mr Eazi have been in a romantic relationship since 2017.

John Charles writes on the painful death of a young woman, Shininenge Pam, set ablaze by her jealous lover. Nicodemus Nomyange, who set her ablaze, also burnt himself in the process after she reportedly rejected his marriage proposal, in Makurdi, Benue State

The last few days have brought unprecedented attention to Inikpi Street in High Level, Makurdi, the capital of Benue State. News of how a jealous lover named Nicodemus Nomyange, set himself and his lover ablaze in an apartment which he had got for the lady had spread across the country and drawn media attention to the area.

Nomyange, who was married and in his 40s, was said to have done that because his lover, Ms Shininenge Pam, had rejected his marriage proposal after he had sent his wife and two kids away because of her.

The house is an old structure painted yellow, but faded to reveal patches of grey and accumulated grime, suggesting it has seen better days. It is Brazillian-styled (Face me-I face you, also called civilian barracks) with about 15 rooms. An unpleasant wave of stench welcomed visitors to the building extension from the only route leading to the apartment of the late Pam, who was said to be in her 30s. She and her lover, Nicodemus, died in a fire incident last Saturday.

The lovebirds, according to neighbours, were often seen together looking like a happy couple.

“They were always together; her place of work was a stone’s throw away from her lover’s place of work. Once Pam closed for work at Lobi Hospital (where she worked), she would go to the Millennium Guest House where Nicodemus worked as manager,” one of Pam’s neighbours said.

But signs of trouble started to show in their relationship recently when Nicodemus proposed to Pam and she turned down his proposal. It was said that Pam turned down his proposal because he was married with two children, who were living in his village in the Logo Local Government Area of the state.

How Nicodemus sent his wife, children packing over Pam

According to Teryima Achaku, who works as a security guard at Millennium Guest House, where Nicodemus was a manager, his boss’ deadly action was ‘unexpected’.

He said, “He was my boss here and we were together throughout Friday night till that Saturday when he set himself and Pam ablaze. We did not know he was planning to end his life.

“We both slept over at the hotel till Saturday and when I woke up, I told him I was going home and would resume by noon and he said he would stay back till I returned.

“When I came back around noon, he asked us (three colleagues, including Achaku) if we remembered an incident at Vandeikiya Street in Makurdi here few years ago where a woman killed her children, husband and herself. And we all said we remembered. Then, he went to the generator room, took 10 litre keg that we normally use to buy petrol and left.

“It was after the incident that it occurred to me that he had passed some message across. Another strange thing I remember is that less than a month ago, he and I attended a funeral in his village. On getting there, he drove his wife and two kids away from his father’s house before returning to Makurdi.”

Corroborating Achaku’s story, Pam’s neighbour, who identified herself as Sunny Pawa, said, “Before the incident, we learned that the man went to his village during his father’s burial and drove his wife and kids away.

“The two lovers had been having misunderstandings lately; it might have to do with his proposal that was rejected by Pam. The lady told him that she could not marry a married man. The issue was known to some leaders in this area and they intervened and urged the man to accept the position of the lady.

“It was after the intervention that he left for his village and drove away his wife and kids. I think he did that to prove to the lady that he was serious about marrying her. But the lady insisted that she could not marry a family man and even showed him the picture of the man she wanted to marry.”

The lovers’ last moments

According to Nicodemus’ nephew, who only identified himself as Kelvin, he was with his uncle a couple of hours before his death.

“He called me and said I should come and be with him. He gave me some clothes to wash for him. It is true my uncle had a wife and two children in the village,” he said.

When asked if he knew his late uncle was dating Pam, Kelvin confirmed it, saying the couple were always together and had been dating for long.

“Even on the day they died, the lady came here after she left her workplace. They chatted as usual and she left. He behaved normally and did not show any sign that he was going to do something like that afterwards. But I remember that he picked a key from the generator house, gave me one of his mobile phones and told me the password to access it.

“Later, we left for the house and ate together. Then he said he was going out and would return later. He left with a keg,” Kelvin added.

At Pam’s place of work, Lobi Hospital, one of her co-workers, Nancy Orave, described her as a very lovely person who was loved by many people.

“She was a good person; she worked as a nurse here. She worked day shift on the day she was killed so she left the hospital around 1:30 pm,” she said.

Orave’s mood, however, suddenly changed the moment she was asked about Nicodemus, suggesting a strong dislike for the man who caused the death of her colleague.

The painful end

Neighbours who were around at the time of the tragic incident painted a gory picture, which they said would not leave them for many years.

For instance, Pawa said he had just returned from work and was planning to prepare a sumptuous meal for himself, only to be greeted by a loud noise from Pam’s room. She was calling him and another neighbour (Andy) to come to her rescue.

He said, “It happened around 5pm on Saturday. I had just returned from work and I only saw one neighbour, Andy, in the compound. My neighbour said he saw when Nicodemus came in with fuel.

“But we didn’t suspect anything since the man was a regular visitor here. They were in a relationship and he often spent time with the lady. But when he came on Saturday, Pam was not around. She worked at a private hospital while the man worked at a guest house around here.

“We later gathered that he had asked her to go home to prepare food for him. So the lady came home and started cooking yam. Then she decided to go and buy some okra to prepare soup. It was during that period that the man came in. He called Pam on the phone to find out where she was and asked her to come back.

“Pam did not get the okra so she asked a neighbour to help her get it so she could return home. As she entered her room, there was no sign of an argument between them but I heard that later the lady called on our neighbour who was around, saying, ‘Andy, come, come, come’.

“It was when her voice became louder that we both ran into her room but the burglary proof at the entrance prevented us from gaining access to her room. It was while we were trying to force the burglary proof open that the man struck some matches and we heard an explosion. The impact threw Andy, who was in front of me, off his feet. It threw him some metres away and he was hit against the well in the compound.

“So there was nothing else we could do to gain access to her room. Luckily, Andy has a brother working with the state fire service. He called him and the firefighters came. But before they arrived, the girl kept screaming for help till it was too late.

“The fire service was only able to save the building and adjourning ones from burning. The fire only affected Pam’s room and the one next to it. But can you believe that the man did not scream at all throughout the incident? He was quiet till the firefighters were able to put out the fire and evacuate them.”

Fourteen-year-old Agabi Agatha, who was staying in the room next to Pam’s, considered herself lucky to have escaped the fire incident.

According to her, on that fateful day, she decided to await the arrival of her sister in another compound.

Agatha further said that few days to the incident, she had a dream that the house was gutted by fire, starting from Pam’s room.

She said, “I came to Makurdi two weeks ago. On Saturday, I decided to stay with a woman when my sister went to the market.

“It was when I returned to the compound to check if my sister was back that I saw our neighbour, Uncle Andy, running helter-skelter. I saw smoke coming out of our compound and I quickly ran inside to see if it was our room that was burning so I could save some items from getting burnt. I saw that it didn’t start from our room but had spread there. The uncle drove me away and warned me not to enter the room. He was pouring water there to put out the fire before firefighters arrived. A few days ago, I dreamt that fire engulfed this house, starting from Sister Pam’s room

No fewer than 1,570 Nigerians were kidnapped between January and November 2020 in 366 reported cases, Daily Trust investigation reveals.

The kidnappers raked in over N311 million from payment of ransom by relatives of their victims within this period, though they demanded over N6.9 billion from their victims. The money paid did not include millions of naira paid by some families who chose to keep quiet because of threats or simply to have their peace.

Daily Trust reports that there has been an upsurge in kidnapping in Nigeria with 41 cases reported in November.

The trend has spread to some tertiary institutions in Kaduna State while the Federal Capital Territory was also not spared with 31 reported cases in 11 months.

Major arteries including the Abuja-Kaduna and Abuja-Lokoja roads have turned to kidnappers’ hotspots, raising fears in commuters. The young and old have been victims.

From the seven-year-old boy kidnapped in Katsina for which N3m ransom was demanded, to the 60-year-old Zainab Musa kidnapped in Niger State, many Nigerians are living in fear of the unknown.

Security operatives were also kidnapped within the time under review. Among the victims were 12 Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs) seized in November, 10 Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officials and four officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) who were also kidnapped in September and February, respectively. An officer of the Department of State Security (DSS) was also kidnapped in September.

Daily Trust recalled that the Sultan of Sokoto and President of the Nigerian Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), governors of the North East, the Afenifere from the South West, among other groups and individuals have all expressed disgust over the deteriorating security situation in the North and the country at large.

A Nigerian man, Ridwan Oyewunmi, has called on Nigerians on social media to help him get justice after a school teacher who is currently on the run, allegedly beat his younger brother, Boluwatife Omelaja, to death at a school in Ikorodu, Lagos state on Thursday, November 26, IgbereTV reports.

In a Twitter thread, the distraught brother said the teacher beat Omelaja because he couldn’t answer a question.

His tweets read:

“Twitter NG i just lost my brother to School Teacher Brutality. Mr Emmanuel(frame 1)is a sec school teacher at Elihans college, Ikorodu in Lagos. He beat up my brother Boluwatife Omelaja(frame 2) to death on 26th of November in the school premises because he couldn’t answer a math question he was asked correctly.
The school initially made us believe he slumped and died while he was trying to answer the question on the board, a boy who wasn’t ill or showed any sign of sickness before.
He was brought home in the school’s bus by the school proprietress and principal, along with Mr Emma-whom we didn’t know was the killer at that time, and he was buried few hours later according to muslim’s doctrine
Meanwhile Bolu’s other brother, Lateef Omelaja was prevented from leaving the school premises, in order to prevent him from spreading the true news to us at home and to buy Mr Emma more time to run away.
We believed the rooster and bull story the school fed us not until Lafeef got home at around 5pm and narrated what really happened at the school to us.
We also confirmed this from other students of the school including classmates of Boluwatife.
The painful part is, the school keeps trying to cover up for Mr emma claiming he didn’t beat Bolu.
Mr Emma is on the run, nowhere to be found.
I know no amount of punishment for him will bring back my brother but i just want Mr Emma located and justice served.”

A 25-year-old mother of five, Onyinyechi Osuigwe, has called out for justice for her late husband, The Nation reports.

The woman whose husband was allegedly killed by a soldier during the recent nationwide ENDSARS protests, has called on the government to fish out the killer of their breadwinner.

The nursing mother and resident of 17B, Ndiuche Street by Ngwa Road, Aba South Local Government Area, Abia State, says she is left to wonder how to carry on with the task of looking after their five children without her husband.

Neighbours are also worried and upset that the deceased 35-year-old man, Ebere Osuigwe, was not even taking part in the protest when he was felled by the solider’s bullets.

Osuigwe was said to have left his residence in the morning of Friday, October 23 for his family’s home at Osuigwe Lane, Ngwa Road, Aba in search of electricity to charge his phone so that he could communicate with other relations and friends in his home town at Umueze Amigbo in Nwangele Local Government Area, Imo State when tragedy struck.

He was said to have met some soldiers in a patrol vehicle who halted him as he was returning home to find out where he was coming from. Osuigwe was said to have raised his two hands up in a gesture of surrender and told the security personnel that he only went to charge his phone and was going back to meet his wife and children.

Refusing to accept his explanation, a trigger-happy soldier was said to have shot him in the ankle. But apparently feeling that he did not hit his target well, the soldier opened fire again, hitting Osuigwe the laps at very close range.

Expressing her shock in a chat with our correspondent, Osuigwe’s widow, Onyinyechi, said: “I am sad the way they brutally shot my husband and left him to bleed to death.”

Continuing, she said: “On that fateful day, there was no electricity and all our phone batteries were down. My husband said he needed to charge them to be able to communicate with his people to know what was going on with the ENDSARS protest.

“I told him to be careful and he assured me that he would come back immediately. After bathing and feeding the kids, I kept our food, waiting for him to come back for us to eat.

“After waiting for a long time, I called him with a neighbour’s phone several times but he was not picking his calls.

“I became worried because usually, no matter where he was, once he saw my call, he would call back to know why I was calling him.

“I went outside and sat down and later decided to go and check him around 11 am. With fear in my heart, I went to the place where he said he was going to charge his phone.

“On getting there, I saw some kids and asked them what happened. They said their brother, Ebere, had been shot dead. I was shocked and started shouting like a mad person.”

Amis sobs, she added: “Things have not been easy for me since he died. It is my landlord’s wife that has been feeding my children and forcing me to eat.”

She recalled that she had dropped her job as a seamstress on account of childbirth and was waiting to go back to work next year, after weaning her five-month-old child.

She urged the Federal Government to fish out the soldier that killed her husband and also help in training the five kids (four girls and a boy) her husband left behind.

The late Osuigwe

Narrating what happened at the family lane, Osuigwe’s elder sister, Benedicta(42), said: “My brother had plugged the phone and later came back to collect it.

“On his way coming back, there is a street opposite Diamond Bank and the street was named after our surname. It is a small lane called Osuigwe Lane.

“He was on this lane when he saw the soldiers and one of them rushed towards him and asked where he was coming from. Ebere (Osuigwe) surrendered by raising his two hands up and told them that he went to charge his phone and now going back to meet his family, and that he was a family man.

“The Fulani soldier shot him first in the ankle and may be feeling he did not get my brother very well, shot him again in the laps. The other soldier asked the killer soldier, ‘Why did you shoot this man?’ and the killer soldier responded, ‘Let him go and treat himself.’

“After shooting him, he waited there and watched my brother bleed to death. They then left him and neighbours carried him in a wheel barrow down to the town, looking for a keke (tricycle) or vehicle to take him to the hospital while he was still bleeding.”

According to Benedicta, by the time Osuigwe was taken to one Christiana Christian Hospital, the hospital checked him and certified him dead.

She continued: “My people doubted it and we were referred to St. Anthony Hospital, Aba. That was where another doctor confirmed him dead. He is in the mortuary now.”

Benedicta described the late Osuigwe as a good man who could not hurt a fly.

She said: “My brother was not a bad man. He was not a cultist. He does not smoke or drink and was not part of the protesters. They just killed him.

“If you watch the distance from where he was killed to the bank, you will see that the soldiers intentionally killed an innocent soul.

“While this was happening, people were inside their houses peeping at the scenario. I feel bad because a similar thing happened to the family in 2017.”

She recalled how another younger brother of hers, Ikechukwu Osuigwe, a member of the (Bakassi) Vigilante Service of Abia State, was returning from Umuahia in company of other members of the vigilante group when on the Aba-Owerri Road, kidnappers shot and killed eight of them, “and the state government did not do anything. He left a wife and two kids, and this has come up again.”

She said: “I want those who killed Ebere to be brought to justice. And let the government compensate the family, as he has five kids and I don’t know how I am going to cater for them. Let them come and kill me too.

“I called the police to inform them but nothing was heard from them again.”

Also, an eyewitness and a neighbor at the family house, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: “I was in the same street with him until I left to charge my phone at a nearby chemist shop. After some time, we heard gunshots and everybody ran inside the house.

“A little while, we saw some army men who came out from where Ebere was shot and started chasing people. After they left, people came out to hear that somebody was killed in front of my shop.

“We all came out to see that our neigbhour, Ebere had been shot. A man removed his shirt and tied the wound and we all started looking for a way to take him to the hospital.

“He was carried in a wheel barrow to the main road and transferred into a keke that took him to the hospital.”

Speaking also, the deceased’s mother, Bessy Osuigwe (55), a widow who sells firewood, said since the death of her son, she had been down with high blood pressure.

“I cry everyday because my son did not do anything. He went to charge his phone when a fellow young man caught him. He was pleading but his captor refused and shot him dead.

“I don’t know what to do next and I don’t know how I am going to cater for the five kids he left behind. How am I going to train these kids as I am not healthy now?”

“I want the Federal Government to fish out that soldier that killed my son and know how to deal with the soldier. They kill and carry people’s corpses, but my son was shot and left to die. They did not carry his corpse.

“My son is innocent. Why did the soldier kill him and leave five kids that I don’t know how to train?”

{EDUCATIONN ZONE}~ No Agreement Yet To Suspend Strike ― ASUU President

THE Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU has denied a news report that it agreed to call off the ongoing strike after meeting with the Government negotiation team led by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige on Friday.

The Federal Government at the meeting at the Conference Hall of the Ministry of Labour and Employment reportedly increased its offer for Earned Allowances EA to university based unions and funding for the revitalization of public universities from N65 billion to N70 billion.

There was news report that ASUU has given an indication that the meeting, the strike which started since March would soon be called off after a meeting with the leadership of union and its organs.

According to the report, the university teachers agreed to call off the strike after the government pledged to pay N40 billion for Earned Allowances and N30 billion for the revitalization of the university system bringing the total payment to N70 billion.

It was further reported that the Government agreed to settle the arrears of salaries of the lecturers before December 31.

The report also noted that ASUU was expected to report the agreement to its organs and then communicate their decision to the government after which a date for the calling off of the strike would be announced.

It quoted a source within the university union, that ASUU insisted that the agreement to call off the strike should not be announced until it has been approved by its members.

But ASUU President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, has denied knowledge of any agreement to call off the strike, stressing that at the meeting, it was only agreed that union should convey Government message to their organs and get back to Government.

Prof. Ogunyemi, said: ”I am not aware of that. All I know is that we had a meeting and we are going to report to our members. But I don’t know about suspension of strike.”

However, a source in the Ministry of Labour and Employment, said that after the meeting, the Minister, Senator Ngige, who described the meeting as “fruitful,” added that the government made a proposal to ASUU which it would take back to its members.

Ngige told reporters after the meeting that, “Many issues were discussed at the meeting including salary shortfall, the payment system and revitalization of the university system. I am positive that all the issues would be resolved at our next meeting.”

Friday’s meeting was about the seventh time both sides have met to resolve the issues in contention since the university union embarked on strike on March 23.

After the meeting of last Friday November 20, Government agreed to exempt ASUU members who had not enrolled in the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) and put them on the Government Integrated Financial and Management Information System (GIFMIS) pending when ASUU’S preferred payment platform- the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) will be approved.

ASUU had consistently rejected IPPIS, stressing that it will erode the autonomy of the university system.

Adewale Abiodun and Aliu Mubarak, two suspected hoodlums, have been nabbed by police, The PUNCH reports.

The two men were arrested for being in possession of the burnt skulls of the two policemen set ablaze in Ibadan in the wake of the #EndSARS protest gave the graphic details of how they sold the skulls for N1,000 when paraded on Friday.

Abiodun, 17 and Mubarak, 24, during an interview with journalists at the police headquarters in Eleyele, Ibadan, disclosed that they sold the skulls to an herbalist in their neighbourhood.

The two suspects, alongside the herbalist, Oladipupo Ifakorede, were reportedly arrested at Oluwo area of Ibadan by men of the Quick Intervention Unit of the Oyo State Police Command on Sunday, November 15.

Abiodun said, “On Monday, October 22, Mubarak asked me to follow him to Alabata area in Ibadan, where his wife was staying. We got to Iwo Road and saw that the road had been blocked. Smoke was billowing. When we moved closer to see what was happening, we saw humans being burnt.

“The mob was hitting the burnt bodies with sticks, and started taking the body parts. Mubarak came to me and said he wanted to take some of the body parts. He said he had someone he would sell them to. Mubarak went to take the two skulls.

“We went to the native doctor’s residence in our neighbourhood. After negotiation, the native doctor gave us N500 with the promise to pay the balance of N500. He told us he was not the one who would use them, but that he would take them to a cleric in Ilorin, Kwara State, for ritual purpose.

“After leaving the residence of the native doctor, Mubarak and I went to a restaurant and used the N500 to eat. About 7pm the same day, the native doctor saw me at a junction in our area and gave me N500 balance. Mubarak and I shared the money at N250 each on the third day.”

Mubarak corroborated Abiodun’s confession, saying, “some people in the crowd removed hands, legs, fingers and feet, while others gathered the ashes from the burnt bodies and took them away. I told Abiodun that I would take the skulls.”

The state Commissioner of Police, Nwachukwu Enwonwu, said the suspects would soon be arraigned.

{UPDATED}: Cause of Akure Explosion on Saturday Morning and Live Images, Many Currently Homeless

The explosion happened in the early hours of Saturday at Eleyowo, Akure, along Owo-Akure highway around 1 a.m.

According to residents of the area, a terrifying loud bang was heard when everyone was already asleep.

Also affected in the explosion was a full boarding school, Aina Awawul Secondary School, one the most popular churches in Akure, Possibility Ground Ministry, as well as filling station and hundreds of buildings.

The highway was cut off with hundreds of travelers stranded.

Police officers and other security agencies are already on ground to assess the situation.

In a bid to allow Nigerians have the benefit of daily update on the 2019 novel coronavirus, the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), has directed GOTv, DSTV, NTA Startimes, FreeTv Platform and others, to allow local stations on their bouquet run even after subscribers have exhausted their subscription.

This is even as the NBC mandated broadcasters in the country to allot 10 per cent of its daily airtime to the public enlightenment of Nigerians on COVID-19.

In a statement issued in Abuja and made available to our correspondent, the NBC said the decryption is to last for one month in the first instance, while adding that further directives shall be issued by the commission after detailed assessments of subsequent development.

“The National Broadcasting Commission calls on all Pay Subscription Broadcasters (GOTv, DSTV, NTA Startimes, FreeTv Platform, etc) in Nigeria to decrypt all local channels on their bouquet to enable subscribers to their services in Nigeria access, without hindrances, daily reports and directives on the coronavirus pandemic.

“The decryption is to last for one month, in the first instance. Further directives on this shall be issued by the commission after detailed assessments of subsequent development,” the NBC said.

The NBC further recalled its earlier request that broadcast stations ensure timely basic information and updates on COVID-19.

It added that daily broadcast monitoring reports so far indicated that broadcast stations across the country have been giving detailed reportage on the campaign for awareness on the 2019 novel coronavirus.

The NBC however said it noted with dismay that a few broadcasters aired unsubstantiated news and names of persons purportedly infected by the virus without required professional authentication.

“Broadcasters are further mandated to allot, at least, 10 percent of their daily airtime to public enlightenment on the virus, in line with national interest and social responsibility, as enshrined in the Nigeria Broadcasting Code.

“The commission commends broadcasters that have remained steadfast and displayed professionalism this period,” the management of NBC added.

The organisation also said there was the urgent need for the government to decentralize testing and turn around time for tests of the virus, by unbundling the workload on the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, which has the sole responsibility of testing and confirming COVID-19 cases in the country.

The body, in a communique signed by the branch Chairman, executive council of the NMA Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter, Dr. Philip Ekpe, made available to newsmen, Saturday, insisted that “the NCDC should be unbundled with regards to laboratory testing and approval granted by Federal Ministry of Health for facilities with Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) machine to conduct the testing.

“This is to decentralise testing in order not to lose probable cases to the community and reduced waiting time for confirmation,” it noted.

The communique reads in part: “Following the confirmation of the first case of Covid-19 in FCT, we observed that 90 per cent of the confirmed cases were returning travellers to the country, that the turn around time for laboratory testing is high due to the overburdening of NCDC and scarce human resources.

“That there is poor awareness/sensitization in the FCT suburbs/rural areas about the COVID-19 infection, there is poor adherence to social distancing in the FCT especially the suburbs and rural communities, there is a paucity of protective equipment including facemasks, hand sanitizers and Personal Protective Equipment, that there are inadequate designated isolation centres for a probable explosion of the Covid-19 infection in FCT.

“The NCDC should be unbundled with regards to laboratory testing and approval granted by the Federal Ministry of Health for facilities with Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) machine to conduct the testing. This is to decentralize testing in order not to lose probable cases to the community and reduced waiting time for confirmation.”

The communique further called on the Federal Ministry of Health to grant facilities with Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) machines to conduct the testing, provide life insurance to all volunteers, provide steady water and electricity supply to all hospitals for effective infection prevention and control, as well as enforce a two to four weeks lockdown in the FCT and environs

While commending the efforts of the Federal government in containing the outbreak of covid19 in the country so far, the NMA called for a free and subsidized facemask, hand sanitizers and PPEs to health workers and the public respectively.

The Branch Executive Council of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), FCT comprises of the Executive Committee and all affiliate heads in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Nigeria reports that receipt of donation of medical supplies from Chinese businessman and CEO of Ali Baba; Jack Ma, had shot its testing capacity up by 32%.

Africa’s most populous nation had carried out a paltry 262 tests for the virus as at March 25, local media portal The Cable reported citing available data they had seen. The sum is insignificant compared to South Africa which had carried out over 20,000 tests with a tally of over 1000 cases.

As at March 26, Nigeria had 65 confirmed cases with majority in the commercial capital, Lagos. The portal today reported that the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) confirmed a spike in testing after the donation which arrived in the country on March 24.

The donation included 20,000 testing kits, 100,000 masks, and 1,000 medical use protective suits and face shields for each African country.

Out of Nigeria’s total tally of 262 tests, 84 tests were carried out on Wednesday alone, indicating a daily increase of 32 percent done by the end of March 25. Tests are now run in 23 states out of the initial 16 .

The director of one of Haiti’s top hospitals was kidnapped on Friday, prompting staff to refuse to take in new patients in protest as the impoverished country battles an outbreak of the novel coronavirus amid a spike in gang violence.

Dr. Jerry Bitar, a surgeon, was kidnapped shortly after leaving for work at Hospital Bernard Mevs from his home in an upmarket neighborhood of the capital, hospital staff told Reuters.

Kidnappings for ransom have sharply increased this year amid a political and economic crisis in Haiti, which according to the World Bank is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Police confirmed 15 kidnapping cases in January alone. Gangs appear to strike indiscriminately, with victims ranging from Haitian schoolchildren, lawmakers and businessmen to foreign aid workers.

A crowd gathered outside the facility in solidarity with Bitar, who runs the hospital together with his twin brother, while staff chanted in unison calls for his release. Haitian media outlets also pleaded for bandits to free Bitar.

“In the face of the coronavirus pandemic, it is abnormal to take the hospital’s doctor,” said Jean Wilguens Charles, a local resident whose friends have received treatment at the hospital. “We demand his liberation without conditions.”

Medical assistant Claude Devil said the hospital usually attended all Haitians, including those who had no money to pay for services, but would not take in new patients while still attempting to look after existing ones as best possible.

“There are several patients waiting to be operated but we cannot work without the doctors’ order,” he said.

The relevant authorities are following the case, a Health Ministry spokesman said.

The Bernard Mevs hospital is a trauma and critical care center and is not treating coronavirus cases currently, but could need to if the disease spreads substantially in the country, where healthcare services and sanitation infrastructure are inadequate.

According to a 2019 study by the Research and Education consortium for Acute Care in Haiti (REACH), Haiti has only 64 ventilators for a population of around 11 million, which makes it especially vulnerable to an outbreak of the highly contagious coronavirus, which causes the respiratory illness COVID-19.

“This is a serious concern, especially given the relatively high proportion of the population considered to be at an elevated risk,” the Center for Economic and Policy Research wrote in a paper published on Friday, co-authored by its analysts Jake Johnston and Kira Paulemon.

Haitian authorities have so far confirmed eight cases of the coronavirus. President Jovenel Moise last week declared a state of emergency, ordering schools, factories, and places of worship shut to prevent the spread of the virus, closing the country’s borders to people and imposing a curfew.

But the streets continue to buzz as many in the country, where more than half the population lives under the poverty line, ignore recommendations to stay at home or practice social distancing. Many do not have access to sources of news.

Even with the best intentions, tricky access to clean water makes it difficult for Haitians to frequently wash their hands, the hygiene mantra that health experts are preaching as a top defense against the spread of the coronavirus.

{COVID-19 UPDATE} ~ Isolate Immediately If You Visited Smile Nigeria Office This Week

Residents of Abuja who who visited the office of Smile Nigeria in the last five days have been told to immediately self-isolate themselves.

Smile, an internet service provider with headquarters in Lagos, raised the alarm via its Twitter account.

The company explained that one of its sales agents may have been exposed to a confirmed case of coronavirus.

It added that the office has been disinfected, closed down and all its employees directed to self-isolate.

“We are concerned that one of our Sales Agents based in Abuja may have been in contact with a confirmed case of the coronavirus”, the company said.

“Further to the above, as a precautionary measure our Abuja Regional Office have been thoroughly disinfected/sanitized, and closed while employees have been asked to self-quarantine for 14 days.”

The service provider urged those who feel sick or exhibit any of the symptoms to contact the National Centre of Disease Control on 08009700001 or SMS 08099555599.

The development coincides with the confirmation by Fidelity Bank that one of its staff tested positive to COVID-19.

Confirmed cases of coronavirus in Nigeria have risen to 65.

The new patients are in FCT (1), Bauchi (1) and Lagos (12).

“Of the 14, 6 were detected on a vessel, 3 are returning travellers into Nigeria & 1 is close contact of a confirmed case,” NCDC said.

Coronavirus has caused about 25,000 deaths globally and affected 200 nations.

A pastor (names withheld) of a Celestial Church at Ijapo Estate, Akure in Ondo State was on Friday stopped from further conduct of naming ceremony by the State Task Force on COVID-19.

The Task Force led by Senior Special Assistant to Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu on Special Duties, Dr. Doyin Odebowale, was monitoring compliance with the Governor’s directives banning large gathering and closure of shops selling non-essential commodities.

The Pastor ran away on sighting the team but the people present were advised to go home.

Odewale said the Task Force was not out to make any arrest but to ensure strict compliance.

He said, “We are not on total lockdown in Ondo. We don’t want to shut down the state because we don’t want people to panic.

“It is to protect people from coronavirus and as such we don’t want congregation of people.

“We are also going round mosques to ensure total compliance. The purpose is not to lock up anybody.”
