Astrology: Knowledge and Intuition - Which is more important!

In Astrology, Two resources are needed for a fairly accurate predictions. One is exact and thorough knowledge of astrology principles and other is a strong intuition. Some Astrologers rely on first and some on second. There is quite a difference between two. And obviously, both have their merits and demerits.

Using the first resource terms Astrology as science. There are set of rules and principles explained in various texts which are used to read, interpret, analyse and predict a chart. Some of these principles are quite accurate in 99% cases and some principles are approximate which work in more than 50% of cases. I stick to this resource for my prediction. These principles are explained in various ancient Astrology text books like Brihat Prashar Hora Samhita, Saravali, Hora Shastra, Laghu Jatakam to name a few. Problem with this resource is that there is lot of corruption, half-explanations and hidden knowledge in the written knowledge of Vedic astrology. Over thousands of years many things in Texts have been corrupted, some have been lost, some have been misinterpreted and some are hidden. But still there is enough knowledge to make successful predictions based on this resource alone. Astrologers who use this resource need accurate time, use shodashvarga technique and conditional dasha and also use various technique like annual charts, rashi dasha etc to filter the noise from the predictions and to achieve 80% accuracy.

Second resource is intuition (as termed in English). Now a days most of the astrologers rely on this. As one purifies his mind and garner significant spiritual energy or inherit it from his guru gains strength in his predictions. There are many astrologers who use this to make fairly accurate predictions. Astrologers who use intuition as a resource don't rely much on charts and mostly they use Rashi-navamsha-vimshottari technique to get some idea and rest is outcome of their intuition. Problem with this technique is that this takes astrology away from 'science' criteria another thing is that it takes time, devotion and sadhna to achieve such a state. Since such astrologers do not use any specific set of principles, they interpret same combinations in different charts in to different meanings with about 80% accuracy.

Since both resources have their merits and demerits I agree that both are equally important. If we want to give Astrology a status of science we should stick to first resource and use second resource to remove the corruption from the first resource and to reveal hidden and lost part of the first resource.

Astrology Tree Forum Not working

Dear Friends,

Due to a major techincal fault our Astrology Tree Forum is not working. Two days back our server crashed and we lost all the data after March 2010. But because of hard work and sheer intelligence of our technical team we were able to revive the data upto 25th of may. All the data added after this and the changes made in forum are lost. This is a very heart breaking news for all of us.

We are working very hard to restore our forum and to redo all the recent changes. We are trying our best. It can take from 2 to three daysto take our forum to working and to redo all the recent changes. Although members who registered after 25th may will have to re register themself and repost their queries.

Example Chart: Profession: Dentist

Hello friends,

Sorry for being away for such a long time. I will try to be regular from now on. Thanks for your support so far.

Below is presented an example chart of a dentist. For privacy reasons birth details are not written here. D1 chart and D10 chart is presented here.

D10 chart shows our karma. Karma or work we do in our society. Our Profession is only a part of that whole karma we do in society. All the houses in D10 chart shows our karma and related aspects. As Profession is the source of livelihood and is pursued mainly for the same reason so profession is mainly indicated by Arth Trikona Houses. i.e. 2H, 6H and 10H and planets owning them and the planet affecting them. Out of these planets, the planet(s) which is stronger will control the profession mainly, or a planet which is controling the most Arth trikona houses. Lagna and trikona also plays a very important role.

2H is the seed of Arth trikona. It shows the resources. The Resources which are available for the profession. A strong 2H in D10 shows lot of resources available for profession. If 2H is strongest of all Arth trikona, a person will choose a profession depending on the resources available to him.

6H is the efforts of Arth Trikona. 6H shows troubles, enemies, obstacles. This house shows what obstacles a person have to face in profession. if 6H is strong, the obstacles faced by a person will decide the profession of a person.

10H shows the karma or end result of the Arth trikona. It shows the profession followed by a person. If this house is strong then this house will show the profession pursued by the person.

In this chart,

Moon is in 2H in D1 own house. It makes 2H very strong. It is a strong Dhan yoga. In D10 also moon is in 2H in virgo. Moon also shows nursing, medicine besides other options. It shows that the resources this person have is related to similar fields. His parents and brother are doctor. He is the third generation in a lineage of doctors.

In D10, his 6H is very strong. It have 2L And malefic lord Mercury, 7L Rahu and Exalted MArs. Three malefics in 6H shows a very aggressive and courageous person as long a profession is concerned. Also since 6H is the strongest this house mainly controls his profession. Since Mars is Exalted, it is the strongest planet affecting arth trikona. Mars Shows Engineers, surgeons, Dentists and other related professions. Rahu shows latest technology, Drugs, chemical. Mercury shows communications and diagnosis in field of medicine. Mars and Rahu are also making a close Rajyoga in 6H

He is the first dentist in three generations. No other person in his family is a dentist. It was his decision to become a dentist as he was not interested in being a physician.

He changed many jobs as dentist in last two years (Saturn-Jupiter -shodashottari dasha) . He started his own clinic few months back in Saturn-mars period and is progressing very well.

J Hora - 7.4 Released by P.V.R. Narasimha Rao

Sorry for not posting any article since last two months. I was busy due to some unavoidable tangles. Coming few weeks will follow the same track. But I will be back to you as soon as possible.

News is that JHora 7.4 has been released by PVR Narasimha Rao. This is an excellent software. A must have for any serious astrologer. Above all it is free to download, distribute and for unlimited use. Thanks to hard work and sleepless nights instilled by PVR Ji. Many many thanks to him.

I didn't had much time to write the review myself so I am just copying and pasting the mail sent by PVR Ji. It also describes the updates and the new features added to the Software. Have a look below.

The main features added in JHora 7.4 (compared to JHora 7.33) are listed here. There are several other bug-fixes.

(1) Bhava arudha pada calculation has a new option now (not the default) to find bhava arudha padas based on exact longitudes. This will allow you to replicate the calculations in the free article "Padamsas and Tranits: A Research Finding" athttp://www.vedicastrologer.org/articles).

(2) The Vimsottari dasa based progressed chart where lagna, nine planets and other Vimsottari dasa start points (including user defined special point and special lagna) are progressed based on the Vimsottari dasa progression is supported now. This will allow you to replicate the calculations in the free article "Transits and Vimsottari Dasa Progression: A Specific Correlation" at http://www.vedicastrologer.org/articles) and do further researches.

(3) In addition, progressed charts based on Yogini dasa, Kalachakra dasa and Sudarsana Chakra dasa are also available, enabling further researches into fine quantitative correlations between dasa based progressed charts and transit charts.

(4) Gunanka scores based on ashtakoota (eight-factor) horoscope matching for marriage are included now. Please click "View" and "Horoscope Matching Score" or the icon in the toolbar with a man and woman. If you enter the nakshatra and pada of bride/bridegroom, gunanka score and classification will be shown.

(5) JHora's "mundane" tab now has a button to locate the stationary transits of planets. This will allow you to replicate the calculations in the free article "Stationary Planets in Transit (A Research)" at http://www.vedicastrologer.org/articles).

(6) The graha drishti of various planets on various houses from lagna, various planets and other bodies and various houses from various arudha padas (if longitude-based arudha padas are used) is evaluated and displayed in an aspect view. One can mix and match different divisional charts and natal chart/transit chart. One can evaluate aspects of D-9 longitudes of transit planets on D-10 logngitudes of natal planets for example. Aspects are quantified and shown as percentages, using Parasara's formulas for evaluating longitude-based aspects.

(7) JHora was only giving Ishta phala and Kashta phala calculated based on Dr Raman's book on balas earlier. JHora now also gives Ishta Phala and Kashta Phala of Parasara, as defined in BPHS. In addition, JHora now gives Uchcha rashmi, Cheshta rashmi, Subha rashmi and Asubha rashmi of seven planets, as defined by Parasara in BPHS.

(8) Bhava/chalit chakras of divisional charts using various bodies as reference (e.g. lagna, Moon, Jupiter, GL etc) are now available based on divisional longitudes. House system chosen by user (e.g. Sripathi) is applied only to bhava chart of D-1 when lagna is used as the reference and an equal 30-deg house system is applied to bhava charts of other divisional charts such as D-9 and D-10 or when a reference other than lagna is used in D-1. However, user selection for whether the reference is the beginning or middle of a house is applied to bhava charts of all divisional charts from all references.

(9) The ability to find nakshatras and nakshatra dasas based on the sidereal zodiac even when using tropical zodiac for all other calculations was added. Check the new checkbox in ayanamsa option dialog box.

(10) Saptarshi nakshatra dasa taught by Pt Sanjay Rath in his "Brihat Nakshatra" book is added.

(11) Avayogi calculation had a bug that affected 50% charts. It is fixed now.

(12) When listing yogi, sahayogi and avayogi, now the exact longitudes of yoga and avayoga points are also mentioned. They are also available in the basic longitude window now and you can see their divisional longitudes too. Some scholars consider them important in transits (thanks to Sri Ramadas Rao for the suggestion).

(13) A toolbar has been added at the top to add/subtract time (in units of 1 sec, 15 sec, 1 min, 1 hour, 1 day, 1 month and 1 year) with the click of a button.

(14) In all nakshatra dasas (Vimsottari, Ashtottari, Yogini etc), a new option is added now and it will be remembered when you close and re-open. This option governs how antardasas are found. Suppose mahadasas are A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H and you need antardasas in mahadasa F. The following six options are supported:

F, G, H, A, B, C, D, E (start from the dasa lord and go forward)
F, E, D, C, B, A, H, G (start from the dasa lord and go backward)
G, H, A, B, C, D, E, F (start from the next dasa lord and go forward)
G, F, E, D, C, B, A, H (start from the next dasa lord sign and go backward)
E, F, G, H, A, B, C, D (start from the previous dasa lord and go forward)
E, D, C, B, A, H, G, F (start from the previous dasa lord and go backward)

The default for Shodasottari is the 6th option. The default for Ashtottari dasa and Dwadasottari dasa is the 3rd option. For others, 1st option is the default. However, you can experiment any option with any nakshatra dasa and draw your conclusions!

(15) Previously only Vimsottari dasa could be started from nakshatras occupied by references in divisional charts. Though the dasa options dialog box gave the divisional chart selection for other nakshatra dasas also, it had no effect. This has been fixed. All nakshatra dasas can now be computed based on the nakshatra occupied by references in divisional charts.

(16) Sahamas found in JHora were sometimes using day time formula instead of night time formula or vice versa, when calculated for the first time with a birthdata. On a data update, they would be fixed. This is corrected now.

(17) Daylight savings time changes made in Canada in 2006 are now implemented in JHora. Changes in US have already been implemented, but changes in Canada were missed.

(18) "Uniform Krishna Mishra navamsa" based on my independent interpretation of Krishna Mishra's verses on navamsa is added. This version results in a chart that represents all signs uniformly, whereas the version of Krishna Mishra navamsa shared by Shanmukha earlier, which is also supported in JHora, is biased towards some signs, i.e. some signs occur 12 times, some signs occur 9 times and some signs occur only 6 times. In uniform variation, all signs occur 9 times.

(19) The defaults in JHora are historically set to various values and I tend to not change defaults as that seems to create confusion. However, my own recommendations have evolved over the time. I added a menu item to set preferences to my liking ("Preferences" >> "Related to calculations" >> "Set Calculation Options as recommended by author"). If you click it, all preferences (ayanamsa, sunrise, chara karaka definition etc) will be set based on what *I* recommend.

(20) Import/export feature of preferences is added. If you select "File", "Export preferences (.ini file)", it will save the preferences to a .ini file with the location and file name selected by user through a file save dialog box. If you select "File", "Import preferences (.ini file)", it will load the preferences from a .ini file with location and name selected by user through a file open dialog box. This enables you to back up your settings and try the settings sent by other people.

(21) Links to a few important websites are added to the main menu. One can visit jhora yahoogroup by clicking a menu, for example.

Birth Time: Factors causing error

Dear Friends,

As an astrologer, our accuracy of prediction higly depends on the accuracy of calculations and birth data. we usually come across statements like "my birth data is absolutely correct" or "I am sure of my birth time".

But the fact is that about 90% of charts need some rectification. It may be some seconds, but some times even some seconds can make big differences. Astrologers using Divisional charts are most sensitive to the error in birth times.

Since last few weeks I was listing some important and some unseen (or we should say ignored) causes which cause error in charts due to birth time differences.

I had tried to list some important and common causes, Some may be left. I hope you will add those missing here

1) Definition of birth time

2) Coordinates

3) Ayanamasya

4) Time zone and distance from time zone line

5) Error in clocks

6) Source of Birth time

1) Definition of Birth time:

Most important of all the causes is that we are not sure what is the time that should be termed as "birth time". Means, Labour is a long process. Process start when the head comes out and ends when baby takes first breath. Sometimes it can span to few mintues. and few minutes is a very long period when it comes to accuracy in birth charts.

There are following four different definitions of birth time. And people who support these different definitions give very genuine reason for the support of same.

a) When head comes out

b) when whole body comes out

c) when umblical cord is cut

d) when baby takes first breath.

There is another thought that in all four definitions are viable in different yugas and in Kaliyuga 4th definition is applicable. But honestly no one knows what is actually applicable.

Time difference between When a head comes out and when baby takes first breath can be upto many minutes. In prolonged labour, In cesarean section, In Induced labour this time period is highly varaible. Sometimes baby doesnot cry (or take breath) for two or three minutes after birth. Some times it may be many minutes and the breath is maintained by Ambu bag or similar medical devices till baby start breathing on self.

So, this factor is highly uncertain that at what stage of labour, does the "birth time" should be recorded.

2) coordinates

Coordinates are another major source of error. Any error in coordinates, will obviously lead to error. This error is minimal in case of small towns. But this error can be big in case of big cities and small villages.

In case of small villages, like mine, coordinates are not available in Softwares. Even in google map it may not be possible to derive actual coordinates as these villages are not shown in google maps at lower altitude especially villages which are some Kms away from main road.

In such cases we usually use coordinates of nearest city. But nearest city can be as far as 30Kms in most of the cases and it will make a big difference in calculations when it comes to divisional charts.

In case of big cities like Ludhiana, Delhi, Kanpur any many many more cities, centre of city is taken as coordinate in softwares. But Ludhiana is about 40 Kms wide. So a person born at periphery of city will obviously have different coordinates when it comes to accuracy.

3) Ayanamasya

Ayanamasya is another important factor in error in charts. Lahiri Ayanamsya is the standard ayanamasya used all over India and is supported by govt of India. But reality is that it actually fluctuated aroung the 180` axis of Chitra nakshatra. It means that every day the ayanamasya is actually changing every day. so the start of zodiac is actually fluctuating, but softwares do not take this considerations in calculations. So some scholars advice to use fixed ayanamasya like Jagannath ayanamasya.

In case we are using Lahiri ayanamasya, it is quite likely that some error will be there.

Not in case of Lahiri ayanamsya alone there are a number of ayanamasya thoughts available and all show difference with each other.

And above all, no one surely know what ayanamasya is actually correct. Although every one give genuine views in support of his opinion.

4) Time zone and distance from time zone line

Indian Standard Time is calculated on the basis of 82.5° E longitude, which is just west of the town of Mirzapur, near Allahabad in the state of Uttar Pradesh. And in case of India, The country's east–west distance of more than 2,000 km (1,200 mi) covers over 28 degrees of longitude, resulting in the sun rising and setting almost two hours earlier on India's eastern border than in the Rann of Kutch in the far west.

Means, the timezone we use in India is based on the about middle of India, the more we move away from the points from where the time zone is observed (82.5` E) more will be the error in charts.

5) Error in clocks

We now a day use highly accurate clocks to measure time. But error do not comes from clock. But error comes from where clock's time is matched or in process of matching clock time.

We now a days use TV to match our clocks, in earlier time radio was used for the purpose. And we all know how serious we are really in matching clocks. In case of analogue wathces which have minute hands, error of one minute (in fact more) is very very possible when we match the clocks unless we take the second's hand at 12 and minute at the sharp point like 9 or 10 or 3. Still after some time say one year or so clock will error in approximate one minute due to technical reasons.

Even in case of digital watches, matching upto seconds is quite difficult task.

This is when we use TV to match and we can assume what was the situation when people matched there clocks with a radio.

In short, most of us do not match our clocks very accurately with actual source of time. And this 'most' include hospitals also. Being a doctor I know that clocks in most of the labour rooms are incorrect and no one actually bother to make it very sharp as they are the least used clocks in the hospitals.

6) Who recorded the time?

Even if we use a highly calibrated watch to record the time and we assume that all the factors stated above are negligible, still it is quite difficult to be too accurate in recording birth time, unltill and unless you have a special person to do this in labour room with a highly calibrated digital watch to record the time.

Actually process of labour is so delicate that during those 15-30 minutes all the attention of doctors, attendents and nurses are on the process of labour. They want to ensure that the process completes without any complication or a problem. There is nothing else in the mind of doctors/nurses except the mother and child.

Usually, time is recorded after the process is completed and baby cries. Then nurses usually guess the time of birth and it is a commonly heard sentence at that time "he took birth 5 minutes ago not 10 minutes ago" then the next sentence will be "okay let's take the average and substract 7 1/2 minutes from recorded time".

These are the most common factors which affect the charts. So it is necessary to rectify the lagna and/or ensure that the lagna used is correct.

How is Tapaswi Yoga formed?

When Ketu, Venus and Saturn are in Trines to each other then it is called Tapasvi yoga.

Sometimes, when two planets are together and third have a strong relation with them, say rashi drishti, then also tapaswi yoga can manifest.

If Atmakaraka is involved in or with Tapaswi Yoga then Tapaswi yoga is much stronger as soul is involved in the yoga and hence the yoga is more fruitful.

Why Tapaswi yoga work?

Trines are Ruled by Lakshmi and Quadrants are ruled by Vishnu. Quadrants show efforts and trines show fruits. Planets in mutual trines are conducive to each other and help each other's significations prosper.

Saturn is a planet of Hardwork and discipline. Saturn shows doing a thing again and again in routine without wanting for fruits. Saturn in this yoga gives

discipline and ability to work hard.

Ketu is a headless graha, it is above wants and selfishness. it denotes selflessness, evolution towards ananta and raise a person above the material world. It gives an urge to know the hidden truth. Ketu in this yoga gives a person selfless devotion towards an aim and a strong urge to find the truth.

Venus gives passion, involvement and enjoyment. Venus make person enjoy the discipline, hardwork and selfless devotion given by Saturn and Ketu.

Tapaswi yoga gives person a strong mind which can endure lot of sufferings.

when does Tapaswi Yoga manifest?

Tapasvi Yoga can be triggered in overlapping periods of favourable Nakshatra dashas and Rashi dashas. Although once triggered it's results can be lifelong even after that particular dasha ends.

What are the effects of Tapaswi yoga?

Tapaswi Yoga doesn't mean a Sanyasi or Sadhu always or a spiritual person. It means

a dedicated and austere pursuer of something. Tapaswi means a person who does the 'tapa'. Tapa means pursuing an aim single mindedly (Sanskrit tapah, tapas- , heat, austerity) With hardwork, discipline and without any selfishness.

As respected PVR Narasimha Rao says "Tapaswis usually dedicate themselves to research and uncover the secrets of the world. A Tapaswi can be into yoga, mantra, tantra, astrology or even physics or chemistry."

A person having Tapaswi Yoga dedicates his life to a area. Does hardwork and achieve success in that are. The dedicaiton can be towards materialistic inclinations or spiritual inclinations or profession or religion or any other area of life. For example, an

atheistic scientist who spends 16 hours a day in finding a cure for a disease can be a tapasvi. Albert Einstein had Tapaswi yoga in his chart.

In which area or life and by which method will the person becomes a yogi will be determined by in which trikona (Dharam, Arth, Kama, moksha) and in which divisional chart does the yoga is taking place.

Similarly Tapaswi yoga gives different results in differnt charts.

Argala: Advanced Rules for Argala-VirodhArgala

Some Advanced Rules for Argala and Virodh Argala used in Vedic Astrology

In this last post of this series we will see some advanced but very important rules used in Vedic Astrology which are must to know before we reach final conclusion.

BPHS says:

Or, if the number of Argalas are more than the obstructing Grahas, then also the Argala will prevail.

When calculating the net results of argala and Virodhargala we have to see which house has more planets. If argala house have more planets then results of Argala will prevail and if Virodhargala house has more number of planets then Virodhargala effects will be stronger

BPHS says:

If the Argala causing Grah is stronger than the obstructing one, the former will prevail.

Means, When there number of are planets equal in both Argala houses and Virodhargala houses. then we will have to see that which planet is stronger. If Argala planet is stronger then effects of Argala causing planets will pervail and vice versa. In Vedic astrology, there are many parameters for strength. And there is controversy that whic parameter to use. Some use Shadbala, some use sthanbala etc. Personally, in coarse perspective, I use that the Exaltation > Mooltrikona > own house > friend's house > Enemy's house > Debilitation formula. But you can use whatever you feel suitable or any other.

BPHS says:

If there are 3, or more malefics in the 3rd they will cause Vipreet Argala (more effective intervention), which will also be harmless and be very favourable.

If there are more than three planets in 3H then they will cause Vipreet Argala which will me more effective intervention and will be harmless and favourable. As this condition will make the person more courageous for that house and person will be more hardworking.

BPHS says:

As Rahu and Ketu have retrograde motions, the Argalas and obstructions be also counted accordingly in a reverse manner.

This is also a controversial rule. Some Astrologers believe that this rule is applicable to Rahu only, some says Ketu only and some says both.

Another contorversys is that some people says that the argala and virodhargala caused by nodes should be counted in opposite direction (for example if Rahu is in 4H from Lagna then the rahu will cause the Virodhargala and not the Argala)

Also some people says that the house which accomodate Nodes should be counted in opposite direction for argala and virodh argala (for example, If Rahu is in Lagna, and planet in 4H, then the planets in 4H will cause virodhargala and not argala)

BPHS says:

Maharishis say, that the Argala, caused by one Grah, will yield limited effect, by two medium and by more than two, excellent effects.

If Argala house have one planet then the effect will be less and more planets will cause more effect. Means more the merrier.

BPHS says:

Argalas should be counted from a Rasi, or a Grah, as the case may be. The Argala, which is unobstructed will be fruitful, while the one duly obstructed will go astray.

Argala should can be counted from the house or planet whatever is needed in interpretation.

BPHS says:

The Argala, caused by placement of a Grah in the first one fourth part of the Rasi, is countered by another, placed in the 4th quarter of the respective obstructive Rasi. Similarly 2nd quarter’s Argala is eliminated by the 3rd quarter placement of another Grah.

Another important rule indicates that divide each house in four equal parts of 7 degrees 30 minutes each. so if planets causing argala and virodhargala are in corresponding quarter of the houses then the obstruction will be effective otherwise the obstruction may not be that effective.

For example If the Argala causing planet is in the first quarter

(or first 7 degrees 30 minutes of the house), while the obstructing planet is

in the 4th quarter (22degrees 30 minutes to 30 degrees), the obstruction

indeed will counteract the argala.Similarly when the Argala planet is in the 2nd

quarter of the House (i.e. 7 degrees 30 minutes to 15 degrees), the

obstruction (planet in 15degrees to 22 degrees 30 minutes i.e. 3rd quarter)

will counteract the Argala."

I had tried to explain this confusing topic in very simple language and in a interesting manner altogether. I know I was not much successful in my attempt. So please forgive me for this and also for my grammatical mistakes.

Some Basic concepts of Argala and Virodhargala

Before progressing to our last post in this series I will like to answer some very basic questions that are arising in your minds and I had received emails asking those.

Ques: Does all argala have different effects or same effects?

Answer: All Argalas have different types of effects. Which we will see in detail in answer to next question.

Ques: Why Planets in 2nd house, 4th house, 11th hosue, and 5th house have so decisive effect on a particular house?

Answer: 2nd house from a specific house signifies resources available for that house. And planets posited in 2nd house will have effect on the resources available for that houses. So a malefic in 2nd hosue from a house will effect the resources badly and benefics in 2H will effect the resources in a good way. This Argala is also called "Dhanargala"

Similarly 4H from a specific indicates comforts, mother, learning related to that specific house. So planets in 4th hosue from a house will affect these factors related to that house. This 4th hosue Argala is also called "Sukhargala"

5th house from a specific shows abilities, knowledge, romance (affection/interest towards that specific house). And planets in 5H from a specific house will affect knowledge related to that house. 5th house Argala is also called "Sutargala"

11th house from any house shows gains related to that specifc house. And planets posited in 11th house from a specific house will effect gains from that specific house. This Argala is also called "Labhargala"

Ques: Why 3rd H malefics cause Argala on a specific house?

Ans: 3rd house shows initiatives. And malefics in 3rd house from a specific house indicates that the person is very ruthless in initiating and will take risks and will be daring when it comes to significations of that house.. Hence they will be causing a specific effect on that house and hence told to cause argala.

Ques: If Argala is obstructed by equivalent virodhargala then the results of that how and to much extent results of that planets will be felt?

Answer: when the periods of planets causing argala will come then the person will cause effects of Argala causing planets come true. But when periods of virodhargala planets will come then the effects that were triggered in Argala planets will come to an halt.

For example, In Lord Shrirama horoscope. He have cancer lagna. And have exalted saturn in 4H and exalted Sun in 10H. Saturn (7L,8L in 4H - indicates staying away from home) is causing Argala on 1H (own existence) and Sun is causing Argala (2L in 10H indicates becoming a king, enjoying all success in career, being good in politics and ruling)

During Saturn's period, Lord Shri Rama had to leave home and had to face many hardships physically. But when the Sun's period came then the effects of Argala came to an Halt and the effects of Sun were felt

Ques: Will Shubhargala obstructs Paapargala and vice versa only? or there is any other rule?

Answer: Shubha Argala can block papargala and Papaargala can block shubhargala. Again Shubhargala can block shubhargala and papargala can block papargala. Hence all four combinations are possible.

Some advanced questions were also asked which I prefer not to answer here as they will become clear as we advance further. If still some soubt will remain I will be happy to clear those in coming in our forum.

Virodhargala and general Characteristics

BPHS says: while obstructors of the Argala will be those in the 10th, 12th and 3rd from a Bhava, or a Grah. The 5th is also an Argala place, while the Grah in the 9th will counteract such Argala.

Means, the Argala caused by 2H, 4H and 11H is opposed by 12H, 10H, and 3H respectively.In Simple words. The planets in 12H from a specific house will obstruct or counteract the effect of planets causing Argala from 2nd hosue from that specific house. Similarly effects of planets in 4H will be obstructed by planets in 10 H, and that of 11H will be obstructed by planets in 3H.

Similarly, Effect of planets in 5H (secondary argala) is opposed by planets in 9H.

Let us see this by pictorial example.

Some Characteristics of Argala and Virodhargala to be kept in mind at this stage:

1) Effects of Argala and Virodhargala are felt in Dasha periods and sub dasha periods of the planets causing Argala/Virodhargala

2) If Obstruction is weak, the result of Virodhargala may not be felt at all and similarly if obstruction is too strong then effect of Argala may not be felt at all.

3) Effects of Argala planets (Planets causing Argala) will be triggered in their periods/subperiods. Which may continue to effect the whole life if there is no obstruction.

4) Even when there is obstruction. Effects of the planets causing Argala can still be felt in their dasha periods which will be stopped and obstructed in the periods of planets causing Virodhargala.

5) If a planet have more than one relation with a specific house (Say Argala + Rashi Drishti or Argala + grah drishti) Then the effect of Argala causing planet is more strong and conducive.

6) If a house is empty and that house is one of Argala causing house, then that house will have negligible effect.

Argala: Argala and General Characteristics

Argala: What is it?

In vedic Astrology, Argala plays a very important role. In general term Argala means "Obstruction" or it means "Bolt on a door". But in vedic astrology it is meant by a decisive caused on a planet and/or on the house.

Argala is a decisive effect on a planet or a house. In Simple language we can call it 'House Aspects' It is different from Sign aspects (Rashi drishti) and Planetary aspects (Grah Drishti).

Some characteristics of Argala:

1) It is casted by House and planets in that house on a house and planets in aspected house.

2) It has more decisive effect on a house and significations of that house. On the contrary, Rashi Drishti show permanent effect and Grah Drishti shows the desire of a planet to effect the significations of a house.

3) It's effects are seen in the periods and subperiods of that planet and Rashi. On the other hand Rashi Drishti have a permanent effect which is independent of Dashas.

4) Argala can be "Shubhargla" or "papargala" (Malefic effect and Benefic effect respectively)

5) Argala can be and should be used in all divisional charts.

General Principles of Argala used in Vedic Astrology:

For this I will like to stick to Maharishi Parashara's Teachings in Brihat Parashar Hora samhita. Parashara Describes Argala in Chapter 31 of BPHS. I will use those teachings and will try to explain those teachings in a more simple language. Infact I will try to make it as simple as possible so that everyone can understand. Some advanced readers may find it too stretched or boring. I request them to forgive me.

BPHS Says: Formation of Argala. Maitreya, I explain below Argala to know the definite effects of Bhavas and Grahas. Grahas in the 4th, 2nd and the 11th cause Argalas,
In other shaloka: The 5th is also an Argala place, while the Grah in the 9th will counteract such Argala.

Means, Planets in the 2nd house, 4th house and 11th house from a specific house will cause Argala on that specific house. Parashara also described that 5th house from that specific house will also cause argala.

Parashara described Argala of 2,4,11 at different shaloka. and that of 5H is different shaloka. Because the argala cause by 2nd, 4th and 11th are more important and more decisive and in modern terms it is also called "Primary Argala". Whereas Argala from 5H is not that important Hence it is called Secondary Argala. But it doesnot mean that we should not use this in interpretation. It also plays very important role.

In other Shaloka Parashara says: If there are 3, or more malefics in the 3rd they will cause Vipreet Argala (more effective intervention), which will also be harmless and be very favourable.

Means, If there are 3 malefics or more in 3H from o house then they will also act as Argala on that specific house. Normally 3H is of Virodhargala (We will discuss in coming para) But in such a condition it will act as Argala itself.

Let us see the example of Argala in this diagram

As we can see, on lagna, 2nd house (saturn and jupiter) is causing argala so effects of Jupiter and saturn will be carried to 1st house. But as 11H is empty. It will not have any evident effect on 1st house.

If mars is placed in Lagn and happens to be in Netrapani, there will be penury; if placed in other Bhavas, Netrapani will confer rulership of a city. Mangal in Netrapani in Lagn will give poverty and will destroy the native’s wife and progeny; if Mangal is in Netrapani in other Bhavas, this confers on the native all kinds of wealth and happiness from wife and children. The Dhan, or Yuvati position of Mangal in Netrapani will cause fear from lions and snakes apart from giving earnings from lands. Furthermore the native’s wife will predecease him.

Mars in Prakash Avastha

Should Mars be in Prakash Avastha, the native will shine with virtues and will be honoured by the king. Mangal in Prakash in Putr will cause loss of children and of wife. If Mangal is in Prakash in Putr and happens to be there with Rahu, a severe (positional) fall will descend on the native. Should Mangal be in Prakash in Putr, or in Yuvati, the native will lose his wife and all children. If Mangal is placed in Putr in Prakash and is yuti with Sani, the native will kill cows.

Mars in Gaman Avastha

the native will be always roaming, will have fear of multiple ulcers, will incur misunderstandings with females, will be afflicted by boils, itches etc. and will incur financial decline. Should Mangal be in Gaman in Lagn, the native will be active in his assignments, will incur diseases of the joints, burning pains in the eyes and will obtain dental afflictions and the like, he will have fear from dogs and will adore the guise of a female. In other Bhavas Mangal in Gaman will bring royal favours, leadership and luxuries of life.

Mars in Agaman Avastha

the native will be virtuous, endowed with precious gems, will adore a sharp sword, will walk with the gait of an elephant, will destroy his enemies and will remove the miseries of his people. Mangal in Agaman will cause piles and diseases of the rectum.

Mars in Sabha Avastha

If Mars happens to be in exaltation, the native will be skilful in conducting wars, will hold the flag of righteousness aloft and will be wealthy; if Mangal happens to be in Sabha in Putr, or Dharm, the native will be bereft of learning; if Mangal is in Sabh in Vyaya, childlessness and no wife and no friends will result; if Mangal is in other Bhavas in Sabha, the native will be a scholar in a king’s court (poet laureate), be very wealthy, honourable and charitable.

Mars in Agam Avastha

The native will be devoid of virtues and good deeds, will be distressed by diseases, will acquire diseases of the root of the ears (‘Karan Mularogam’ & ‘Padamulam Urumulam’ etc.) and severe gout pains, will be timid and will befriend evil lot.

Mars in Bhojan Avastha

If Mangal is with strength, while in Bhojan Avastha, the native will eat sweet-food; if devoid of strength, will indulge in base acts and be dishonourable. If Mangal is in Bhojan, or in Sayan in Putr, or in Randhr, there will be untimely death for the native. In other Bhavas Bhojan of Mangal will confer wealth.

Mars in Nritya Lips Avastha

The native will earn wealth through the king and will be endowed with fullness of gold, diamonds and corals in his house. Should Mangal be in Nritya Lips and happens to be in Lagn, Dhan, Yuvati, or Karm, the native will receive all kinds of happiness; there will be miseries in abundance, if Mangal is in Nritya Lips and placed in Randhr, or Dharm, apart from incurring untimely death. In other Bhavas Nritya Lips of Mangal will make the native akin to Kuber.

Mars in Kautuk Avastha

will be curious in disposition and will be endowed with friends and sons; if in Kautuk and simultaneously exalted, will be honoured by the king and the virtuous and will be virtuous himself. Mangal in Yuvati, or in Dharm in Kautuk will give several diseases and death of the first child and wife. In other Bhavas Kautuk will confer scholarship, various kinds of wealth, two wives and more female children.

Mars in Nidr Avastha

will be short-tempered, devoid of intelligence and wealth, will be wicked, fallen from virtuous path and troubled by diseases. In Nidr Mangal in Lagn, Dhan, Sahaj, Dharm, Karm, or Labh will give scholarship, foolishness and poverty. Putr, or Yuvati placement of Mangal in Nidr will give many miseries and many male children. will be poor and will have to do hard and heavy work, will indulge in litigations, will be hard hearted will suffer poverty, will carry loads, will indulge in litigations, be hard-hearted, wicked and will lose in his undertakings. Surya in Upavesan will make one an artisan, black in complexion, devoid of learning and miserable. One will serve others.

Sun in Netrapani Avastha

will always be happy, wise, helpful to others, endowed with prowess and wealth, very happy and will gain royal favours. In Netrapani there will be all kinds of happiness, if Surya is in Putr, Dharm, Karm, or Yuvati. In other Bhavas Netrapani of Surya will give eye diseases and enmity with all.

Sun if in Prakash Avastha

will be liberal in disposition, have plenty of wealth, be a significant speaker in the assembly, will perform many meritorious acts, be greatly strong and endowed with charming beauty. If Surya is in Prakash, the native will be meritorious, religious and liberal, will enjoy pleasures, be equal to a prince and will enjoy the status of Kuber, the God of wealth. However, the Prakash of Surya, placed in Yuvati, or Putr will cause loss of the first child and will produce many litigations.

Sun in Gaman Avastha

will be disposed to live in foreign places, be miserable, indolent, bereft of intelligence and wealth, be distressed, due to fear and will be short-tempered. If Surya is in Gaman, the native will incur disease of the feet and will be very mean.

Sun in Agaman Avastha

will be interested in others’ wives, be devoid of his own men, be interested in movements and skilful in doing evil deeds, be dirty, ill-disposed and will be a talebearer. If in Agaman, Surya in Vyaya, or in Yuvati will destroy progeny and will give very limited wealth.

Sun in Sabha Avastha

will be disposed to help others, be always endowed with wealth and gems, be virtuous, endowed with lands, new houses and robes, be very strong, very affectionate to his friends and very kindly disposed

Sun in Agam Avastha

will be distressed, due to enemies, fickle-minded, evil-minded, emaciated, devoid of virtuous acts and intoxicated with pride. If in Agam, Surya will give many miseries, an ugly appearance and foolishness. However, he will give wealth.

Sun in Bhojan Avastha

will experience pains in joints, will lose money on account of others’ females, will have strength, declining off and on, be untruthful, will incur head-aches, eat remnant food and will take to bad ways. Surya in Bhojan in Dharm will cause many hindrances to spiritual and religious undertakings. In other Bhavas Surya in Bhojan will cause head and ear diseases, apart from joint pains.

Sun in Nritya Lips Avastha

will be honoured by the learned, be a scholar, will have knowledge of poetry etc. and will be adored by kings on the earth.

Sun in Kautuk Avastha

will always be happy, will be endowed with Vedic Knowledge and will perform Yagyas, will move amidst kings, have fear from enemies, will be charming-faced and be endowed with knowledge of poetry

Sun in Nidr Avastha

will have a strong tendency towards being drowsy, will live in foreign (distant) places, will incur harm to his wife and will face financial destruction. If Surya is in Nidr, the native will be predisposed to incur piles and elephantiasis, will experience a lack of peace and he will be liable to lose his first child.

Each avastha type is given a number

say

1) Shayan (lying down),

3) Netrapani, (Eyes and hands)

4) Prakash, (glowing)

5) Gaman, (On the move/walking)

6) Agaman, (coming)

7) Sabha, (attending an assembly)

8) Agam, (Returning)

9) Bhojan,(Eating)

10) Nritya Lips,(Desirous)

11) Kautuk (Eager)

Similarly each planet is given a number from 1 to 7 (sun to saturn), each sign is given a number from 1 to 12 (Aries to Pisces) and each nakshatra is given a number from 1 to 27 (From Ashwini to Revati)

The formula for calculating the Shayanadi avastha is

Number of the Nakshatra (occupied by that planet)

X (Multiply)

Number of the planet

Number of sign in navamsha that planet is in

+ (Add)

Janam Nakshatra (constellation occupied by moon)

Number of ghatis of birth

number of Lagna Rashi (Sign occupied by Lagna in Rashi chart) = Total

Now divide this total by 12. You will get a reminder. This reminder will give you the corresponding avastha.

To get the Sub state,

Take the square of the number of avastha of planet + Anka value of the person's name's

first syllable (hindi varnamala) = Total

(Anka value is 1 for a, ka, cha, ? a, dha, bha and va, 2 for i, kha, ja, ?ha, na, ma and sha, 3 for u, ga, jha, ta, pa, ya and sa, 4 for e, gha, ? a, tha, pha, ra and sa, 5 for o, ca, ?ha, da, ba, la and ha.)

Divide the total by 12 = Remainder

Now,

Remainder + Constant additives of that planet ( Surya 5, Candr 2, Mangal 2, Budh 3, Guru 5, Sukr 3, Sani 3, Rahu and Ketu 4.) = Second Total

Now divide second total by 3 = Second Remainder

For second remainder

1 = Drishti

2 = Chesht

3 = Vichesht

In Chesht sub state planet gives full result, In Drishti sub state planet gives half results and no results in third state.

Another simple method to calculate these avasthas (The method which I use usually) is to use a good Horoscope making software. :))

Avasthas: Shayanadi Avasthas- General Description

Besides three types of Dasha Discussed by us in previous posts. There is another types of Avastha. This is called Shayanadi avasthas. These avasthas indicate the mood of the planet.

and which result will it give. Parashara says this type to be most important of all. Parashars discussed these avasthas in very detail. But these avasthas are one of the best kept secrets in astrology. And one of the less known types of avasthas. In coming posts we will discuss these avasthas. The reference is mainly from BPHS.

Shayanadi Avashathas are of twelve types,

1) Shayan (lying down),

2) Upavesan, (sitting)

3) Netrapani, (Eyes and hands)

4) Prakash, (glowing)

5) Gaman, (On the move/walking)

6) Agaman, (coming)

7) Sabha, (attending an assembly)

8) Agam, (Returning)

General effects of sayanadi avasthas as told in BPHS.

If a benefic Grah is in Sayan, then that benefic planet will give benefid results in all his dasha and antardasha period. Because at that time planet is lying down and is in relaxed mood. he is feeling comfortable enough in that house that he can laydown and rest there.

If any malefic planet is in Bhojan avastha, then that planet will destroy every happiness of that house. Bhojan means eating and a planet is eating that house and it's significations.

When a planet is in 7H in the state of Nidr (sleeping) and is not getting any malefic aspect then native will feel auspisious effects related to that house. This is because that planet is sleeping there and is not in mood to harm. Similar effects can be described for 5th house

But if a malefic is in 8th house in nidr then person will have untimely death due to punishment from the government. But if that planet is getting aspect from benefic and/or is in conjunction with benefic then that person will die untimely at sacred places/shrines. Parashara described the place of death as Ganga nadi specifically.

If moon is in Kautuk or prakash avastha then person will have a great Rajayoga. If a malefic is in 10th house in sayan or bhojan avastha then that person will have to face problems due to his own bad deeds of present life any many past lives.

Third Lord in the Seventh House

May be punished by authorities. May have to face much suffereings in childhood. Even youth is filled by stress. Danger of accidents/injury is there. When 3L in 7H is well disposed he will have good relation with brothers. He usually have regular income. Such person are good in subordinates position and are not good at higher positions. They ar not careful about law much.

BPHS says: If Sahaj’s Lord is in Yuvati Bhava, the native will be interested in serving the king. He will not be happy during boyhood, but the end of his life he will be happy.

Third Lord in the Eighth House.

Person may have to face a criminal case which is usually falsly painted. Even if person is honest he is treated as criminal and if there are more afflictions he may not be able to prove himself innocent. Career may see some setbacks.

Person may loose his younger brother and he himself be suffering from diseases. Which are usually chronic. Although person may have sudden gains. Such persons are honest aand have good intentions. They are very sensitive. Although they are usually misjudged by society.

BPHS says: If Sahaj’s Lord is in Randhr Bhava, the native will be a thief, will derive his livelihood serving others and will die at the gate of the royal palace.

Third Lord in the Ninth House

Person’s luck improve after marriage. May see sudden and expected changes in life. May travel long journeys. His brother will inherit ancestral properties and he himself will have good relation with his brothers. Person may have misunderstandings with father. They are very emotional and sensitive but sometime they may just turn out to be non-believers.

BPHS says: If Sahaj’s Lord is in Dharm Bhava, the native will lack paternal bliss, will make fortunes through wife and will enjoy progenic and other pleasures.

Third Lord in the Tenth House

Person will have a short tempered wife. He is happy, wise and wife obeying. Person tend to travel for sake of business. This combination is good for brothers. He have successful brothers. He have pleasing personality and are sincere. So they are famous in society and well accepted and have good reputation.

BPHS says: If Sahaj’s Lord is in Karm Bhava, the native will have all lands of happiness and self-made wealth and be interested in nurturing wicked females.

Third Lord in the Eleventh House

This is not a favourable combination. Person will have to earn money with efforts. Person is not good looking. Person is dependent on others. Person’s health is also afflicted. Person may be selfish. He may cheat his brothers and sisters. They are short tempered Not a very good combination. Although their gains are good from profession.

BPHS says: If Sahaj’s Lord is in Labh Bhava, then native will always gain in trading, be intelligent, although not literate, be adventurous and will serve others.

Third Lord in the Twelfth House

Person gets sorrow through relatives. Luck improves after marriage. Have a bad relation with father and reputation of father is not good. Younger brother is extravagant and problem creating. Person have to face losses due to younger brother. They have a dominating tendency, that’s why they may have some problems with friends sometimes. Person will spend on bad things.

BPHS says: If Sahaj’s Lord is in Vyaya, the native will spend on evil deeds, will have a wicked father and will be fortunate through a female.

Third Lord In the First House

Native is a self-made person. Earns livelihood by own hardwork and efforts, Is lean and tall, brave, courageous, helping. Person may have some bad health from time to time. Person is intelligent and knowledgeable although may lack in formal education. If planet is a fiery planet, person may have a short temper and becomes angry easily. Person have interest in Arts and beauty. And also himself is famous as an artist if the planet is a soumya planet.

BPHS says: If Sahaj’s Lord is in Tanu Bhava, the native will have self-made wealth, be disposed to worship, be valorous and be intelligent, although devoid of learning.

Third Lord in the Second House

2H is 12^th from 3^rd so this is an unfavourable position. Person is mean and is not happy as he lacks initiatives. Person is lazy and have less energy to dispose off. Person is selfish and have an eye on other people’s wealth and wives. This combination is also not good for younger brothers. If planet is an evil planet person may become a thief or a fraud. Their image is not good in society and they are not punctual.

BPHS says: If Sahaj’s Lord is in Dhan Bhava, the native will be corpulent, devoid of valour, will not make much efforts, be not happy and will have an eye on others’ wives and others’ wealth.

Third Lord in the Third House.

Person is brave and have many friends. Person share good relation with brothers and relatives. Person is happy, wealthy and have good children. 3L is good when in upchaya houses. This position is good for younger brothers. If 3L is Mars or Saturn then person may have some difference with younger brothers and may loose younger brother if other afflictions are also there. They are very confident, optimistic and diplomatic. May have good relation with neighbors.

BPHS says: If Sahaj’s Lord is in Sahaj Bhava, the native will be endowed with happiness through co-born and will have wealth and sons, be cheerful and extremely happy.

Third Lord in the Fourth House.

Person lives a happy life. He is healthy, wealthy and wise. Buy may not have a good wife. If Mars or any other evil planet is 3L then person may have a cruel hearted and mean wife. If Mars is weak person may loose his property. Such persons have more than appropriate self-respect. May have some problems with mother and family as 3L is 12^th from 4H.

May lack happiness from children. Also may have troubles with domestic life. Such person are very successful if they opt for agriculture. Govt service is also good for them. Although person is able and skilled.

BPHS says: If Sahaj’s Lord is in Putr Bhava, the native will have sons and be virtuous. If in the process Sahaj’s Lord be yuti with, or receives a Drishti from a malefic, the native will have a formidable wife.

Jupiter in 3^rd house gives the person many good brothers but relation with them may be bad if Jupiter is afflicted. He have good relation with brothers if Jupiter is in favourable signs. Although Jupiter is Marana-karaka sthana for Jupiter. Person is Optimistic and philosophical. Does not have good relation with own children and family. Person is not much respected in society and may be suffering from chest and digestion problems.

Jupiter from 3H casts full aspect on 7H (will get good, devoted and religious wife) 9H (will be religious, fortunate, believes in vedic knowledge) 11H (will have constant source of income and will be able to maintain gains from profession)

Venus in Third house

Person is mentally very strong but physically he may have to face problems. Person likes singing, dance, arts, music etc. Person have a very creative bent of mind although financially he may not be that successful.
