Everything about the movie pales in comparison to the singular excitement generated by her. Of course, it's reflected glory from Manny. But she deserves it.)

P.S. The part where she innocently asks if Imelda Papin is still alive ("Buhay pa ba siya?") is priceless. Imelda Papin should gamely retort. Such is the price of fame. When you somehow lose it, a new one comes along, takes your place, and worse, asks if you're dead. Double LOL.

I swear I think about Michael Jackson very differently now after seeing the film last night.

Just see the movie documentary. It washes away allegations, if there were ever, that Michael Jackson was suicidal. He was so full of life and inspiration during rehearsals for the supposed series of concerts at the UK's O2 Arena. The movie is mostly composed of footages of the rehearsals --- raw and unembellished. Except that Michael Jackson was naturally complex and certainly not plain.

Death indeed comes like a thief in the night.

CHRISTMASTIME IN MANILA

You know it's Christmastime in Manila when all of a sudden a roving police patrol pick-up truck barges through a crowd in a run-down corner and starts collaring surprised denizens.

I was not among those surprised when it did happen.

I calmly followed instructions for me to present an ID. In fact, two IDs. What? He's not satisfied with my SSS ID? Well, he's three years late when I would have shown a fake one (I had since disposed of that ID which only brought me trouble, something I have regretted and blogged about in the past). So I showed my company ID. He muttered about me being a Muslim. Hmm, he must have easily and so wrongly concluded that I am one just because (let's face it) my name is not exactly commonplace and I happened to wear a Muslim-inspired shirt I bought a long time ago at the Davao airport.

An unprofessional, uncouth police officer, to say the least. If he is even a policeman. They did not wear uniform, their only claim to legitimacy was the official police vehicle. I inquired meekly, though I completely understood the ongoing situation, why they were requiring to identify me. The "policeman" said haphazardly "Marami kasing holdapan ngayon." I nearly throwed up in disgust but only in imagination. What? Ako ba mukhang holdaper? And the other people being accosted did not look like criminals either. Yet, some of them did not have IDs and others briefly eluded arrest (yung mga medyo nerbyoso) that all the more they were being pursued.

A total of six to eight people ang dinampot. As for myself, I had my time when I was once briefly detained for smoking inside a public utility vehicle which is prohibited under a city ordinance. I raised hell over my blog then (sort of). But I was clearly at fault. This time, after showing the two IDs, I gave the "police officer" a look-over as if to say "Satisfied?" And I slowly moved away as if nothing happened. A little fear did grip me, tentatively waiting for him to call on me, but it never was. My lucky day!

A few minutes later after walking away a few meters, I came back to see that they have left with their quarry. Nag-usyoso ako sa tindera ng sigarilyo sa tabi-tabi na nakakita sa lahat. We have the same conclusion. It's Christmastime! P500 per person would not be bad for a night's work.

Perhaps the only admitted error those people committed (including myself) is that they chose to make tambay in an area that is in fact notorious for criminal activity. Still, it can be argued that the place has always been teeming with people. If indeed they were police officers, shouldn't they just stake it out for real criminals instead of harassing hapless passersby?

But then again, who are we kidding? Magpa-Pasko na nga!

P.S. I have a suspicion that a deeper reason is behind the incident. I'm keeping the yarn to myself until I will have confirmed it and have the courage to be pro-active about it. That or Mirinae, Lupit's successor, intervenes.

B.A.I.A.S. RECOMMENDS: THE ECHO

Okay, I didn't watch the original Filipino version, Sigaw. And I am not too enthusiastic about Filipino movies in general. But the fact that The Echo is a Hollywood remake of a local movie was enough to get my attention.

In the spirit of the upcoming Undas, I tried concentrating on the merits of the movie and stopped looking for things to criticize. It's actually fun watching a film without the excess baggage that comes with an attitude of dissent.

It is worth recommending but only because I felt fear in some scenes due to the uncanny resemblance of the lead character's "situation" living alone in an old apartment building to moi. Although my building is not old, the set-up of the residents in the movie is eerily comparable.

Now, a little narcissism. This is me inside my pad. I live alone and I sometimes hear weird noises too! A couple of times, I also had nightmares. But unlike the movie, everything is not explained in the end; I just wake up to a peaceful morning and start the daily grind anew.

Do I look scary? LOL.

The storm fizzles out. It seems that even Lupit, the eponymous typhoon of potential harshness and cruelty, is reluctant to make landfall. But another kind of storm is brewing. READ THIS. WTF!

Strong winds especially at night are still blowing here in Manila but everything is all set to go back to what was normal --- including government corruption. (The story in that link I posted above is fast gaining traction and will soon blow out of proportion if the DSWD does not handle the situation well.)

The weather is kind enough for my brother and sister-in-law who are visiting the city for a business seminar. We had a little gathering last night with a cousin and some relatives of the sister-in-law.

UPDATE: (10/19/09) It appears the opposite has happened. The "storm placenta" seems to move Lupit further north (at some point away from the country, northeastward) that chances of it making landfall in Manila's direction are slim.

It's simply alarming. This is a fearless forecast of a website Feww.wordpress.com on the path of typhoon Ramil (Lupit).

FEWW Forecast: Moderators believe if Cyclone LUPIT were to merge with the “storm placenta” to its south (encircled on the image), it could probably:

1.Reorganize, strengthening into a super typhoon.

2.Alter its projected course, moving toward a westerly direction and targeting southern Luzon (and the national capital region surrounding the Philippines capital Manila).

On a personal note, I was caught unaware with Ondoy (Ketsana) sleeping as I did till noon on that fateful Saturday. This time I will make sure I'll be wide awake. Of course, my own safety is a prime concern; I will not be a hero to others unless push comes to shove.

Here comes another typhoon. In the next few days, it is projected to enter the country's area of responsibility. (A technical term for meteorologists, I can't help say "How apt.")

It will be named Ramil locally and (would you believe) Lupit internationally. Here's hoping si Ramil ay hindi magiging kasing lupit ni Ondoy at Pepeng; sana'y maging tulad ni Quedan lamang.

DAMN THOSE DAMS

This is the San Roque Dam. I just learned from the news that it's Southeast Asia's largest and the 12th largest in the world. It is located in Central Luzon among a few other smaller dams including the Angat Dam which is closest to Metro Manila.

Normally I would dismiss senate investigations as useless, full of grandstanding politicians. But the inquiry into the claim that the irresponsible release of water from the dams was the main culprit of the flooding piqued my interest. Indeed one wonders what those damn dams are for. I am not an engineer, all I really know is that power corporations use dams to generate electricity. Common sense however tells me that dams also benefit the surrounding community by holding water that would otherwise overflow from rivers dumped with heavy rainwater.

Because the facility holds an enormous volume of water, it must have been built to be durable using modern technology. And yes, I agree with the dam administrators defending the release of water when they said that the situation could have been worse if they allowed the structure to be destroyed by the sheer pressure. But what does it really take to destroy the dam? They quoted a specific critical level. However, it was clearly established that at the time of the water release, the critical level has not yet been reached. Could they have waited a few hours instead of reportedly allowing a powerful rush of water to flow into towns and cities in the middle of the night? They said a warning was issued. But that's only a few hours before the event when most people were already asleep. Methinks if they had waited till morning, they could have spread the warning more effectively and could have alerted an awake populace. People were out on a limb yet persons in authority chose to doubt the durability of the dams which are supposed to withstand water pressure before the critical level. This is not excluding the possibility that with modern construction, a critical level is just that, a critical level which does not necessarily translate to the destruction of a high-tech dam.

The damage has been done. What can we do? Well, let's talk about it and make the issue controversial. At last, a senate inquiry makes sense to me. The dam(n) engineers are assumed to be good at math and calculations. It maybe better to house them near the dams so that next time around, they can calculate fast not only the remaining meters before critical level but also the potential lives that will be lost including their own.

THE WEEKEND

For the first time in a long while I stayed put this weekend. With no night life, I just went out a couple of times to update this blog. The rest of the two days I spent cleaning my grime filled pad and doing away with as much laundry as I could handle. I realize I've been a sloth. Waiting for the machine to finish the washing, I either watched TV (and in between commercials wipe off the accumulating dirt on many surfaces) or tended to an experimental cooking of many pork(s) and beans.

A re-run of AI (Artificial Intelligence) on Studio 23 caught my attention. I do recall having seen it on the wide screen but I don't recall appreciating the story as much as I did watching it on TV. Hmm, it spawned quite a number of existential questions and answers in my head. One that comes to mind quickly is the question of reality for humans and non-humans alike. The film contends that after two millennia, humans are practically extinct but their "reality" still exists in the reality of a new and seemingly artificial intelligence. But at that point of existence, a different point of view is prevailing which causes a reversal of fortune of sorts --- human intelligence has become the artificial intelligence.

The main reason why I got stuck to the channel is that it's the only one with very clear reception among those I would have chosen to watch. I have no reason to complain though; I don't pay for any cable subscription. Eversince I took the apartment, the connection has been there, all I needed was a TV set. But I know the cable connectors and wiring had something to do with it which is difficult technical stuff for me. I still have to figure out what to do. In the meantime, Studio 23 ain't that bad. Besides, I get sick watching grandstanding celebrities yakking about their help for Ondoy victims in most local channels.

The downside to retreating to my shell is that I truly miss the enjoyable things I would have normally done on weekends. But it's a plus when it comes to my resolve to save money. This brings to fore the sad reality that for me, like most people, enjoyment equals spending.

This is too hard I don't think I can do this again next week. However, I'm satisfied that I have willed it this way. One thing that helped was that I intentionally stopped receiving calls that would otherwise make me change my mind about staying put this weekend.

CALAMITY LOANS

I know how it is to be affected financially by a disaster. There's really no other way for people to deal with their losses aside from getting help through donations but to ask for loans. It's relatively easy to do except that there exist loan sharks out there. But expect the government to step up in this regard. After all, government's resources originally come from the people and giving back these resources to them in the form of loans is also a type of investment. It's not as if these loans are not paid back and with no interest to boot.

I'm quite lucky not to have been affected by the recent calamity but this is for the many others who are.

The Social Security System (SSS), as far as I know, does not offer calamity loans. (What you can do is to apply for a Salary Loan which is available even when there's no disaster.) The Home Development Mutual Fund (HDMF or Pag-ibig Fund) does. Here are the pertinent details:

Pag-IBIG Calamity Loan Program
HDMF Circular No. 195

LOAN PURPOSE

The program provides financial assistance to Pag-IBIG member-victims in calamity-stricken areas.

BORROWER ELIGIBILITY

Member must have made at least 24 monthly contributions; Member is actively paying contributions at the time he applies for a loan, and commits to continuously remit contributions for the term of the loan. A resident of the area which is declared calamity-stricken. (The whole of Metro Manila is considered calamity-stricken.)

LOAN AMOUNT

The member is entitled to borrow up to 80% of the Total Accumulated Value (TAV) of his savings. For members with existing MPLs, the outstanding loan balance shall be deducted from the proceeds of the calamity loan.

INTEREST RATE

The loan is charged an interest rate of 10.75% per annum. Interest for the grace period is capitalized and amortized over the term of the loan.

LOAN PERIOD/RENEWAL

The loan shall be amortized over a period of 24 months with a grace period of 5 months. Should another calamity occur in the same area, a borrower may renew his calamity loan any time. The outstanding balance of his existing loan, together with any accrued interests, penalties and charges, shall be deducted from the proceeds of the new loan.

AVAILMENT PERIOD

The Pag-IBIG member-victim must avail himself of the Pag-IBIG Calamity Loan within a period of 90 days from the occurrence of the calamity.

Another typhoon. Billed earlier in the news as stronger than Ondoy (Ketsana). It's now named Pepeng (Parma). I'm buying supplies. Supermarkets were packed with consumers. Early signs of panic buying?

Better being safe than sorry later. Friday was just any other day for me and then Saturday came. The place where I live was among the few localities within MegaManila not harshly affected. (In fact I had to go to other places just to get my video and photos, LOL.)

I have a feeling Pepeng will "even" out the scenario. I have visions of water engulfing my neighborhood; water overflowing from a creek nearby and from the Manila Bay a few blocks away. Worse, hearing news of earthquakes in Samoa and Indonesia triggers my long-held fear of The Big One coming to Manila. (In which case I wouldn't be needing supplies inside a crumbling building. I fear fire because I experienced it first-hand but now that I live on a concrete structure with slim chances of fire, earthquake takes its place.)

But, whatever. Time to show courage and stand by my personal philosophy on destiny. What will be, well, will be.

Nevermind my fat, haggard face. See the difference? It is reportedly a record-breaking amount of water dumped by a typhoon in Manila's history (at least in the past 40 years, they say). For me, well, it definitely is. Personally, I haven't seen so much rain water in my entire life.

Here's the video I took of Quiapo-Ilalim or Quiapo Underpass below Recto Avenue in downtown Manila where the Isetann Mall is located. (My late father was very familiar with this tunnel. He used to take a jeepney from the Boy Scouts Dormitory in Quezon City through the tunnel to Isetann --- where we often met after work mainly because it's halfway between us since I was commuting from the south.)

I think I have the best video of the flooded tunnel, I might restrict embedding in the future, hahaha. That's pure selfishness, of course, which has no place in this time of calamity...(But notice that in this "time of calamity," the street kids of Manila are enjoying every bit of the situation, having so much fun swimming and splashing on the rather murky flood water. Using a lamppost as a diving platform takes the cake. It's virtually the largest "public swimming pool" in the heart of Metro Manila. And in my opinion, it looks good, as if it's designed that way. It's like a version of Venice, albeit dirty, LOL.)

The following photos are limited to the vicinity of the Quiapo-Recto-Isetann area accessible to me via the 24-hour LRT especially operated that day.

UPDATE: The cities of Marikina and Pasig bore the brunt of the typhoon in MegaManila. Quiapo, which is part of the city of Manila, did not actually suffer major damage and casualties. On hindsight, the underpass/tunnel may have saved it from so much water. Just imagine where else that huge volume would have gone to if it wasn't for the tunnel acting up as a catch basin. As of this moment, Manila Flood Control is trying to pump the water out and spread it to the outlying areas. Many are curious because rumor has it that vehicles and possibly dead people were trapped underneath. But I don't think so. I was there when the water was still rising and there were no such vehicles. (09/28/09, Monday, 10pm)

BACK TO DIETING

It's days before the last quarter of 2009. And the period of fasting for Muslims has just ended. These remind me of my annual resolve to lose or gain weight. "Annual," like an anniversary observed, because experience has proven that I never get to improve my physical condition on a more permanent level.

I'm thin and I'm fat and then the description alternates. In between I fear for disease creeping in. There's never so much one can do to stay healthy. The good news is that there's change. It's not like I'm fat all year round or that I have been consistently thin in say, 2006, even if that year had been especially bad for my health. (Don't ask. That's annus horribilis. Worse than 2002's financial devastation caused by fire which nearly killed me. But I'm digressing.)

Before this year is over, I hope to be as thin as reed. It does not matter if that will prove harmful. I'm not a health buff anyway. Yes I fear ill-health but it does not follow that I'm obsessing over wellness. I won't be happy being 100% fit all the time. That would entail a lot of sacrifice. Besides, I don't believe that as humans we can achieve total fitness, limited as we are (ultimately) with natural ageing.

Perhaps what I'm really driving at is change. If I'm already thin today, I will most likely want to get fat before the year ends.

My plan is to abuse cereals. Yep, that's right. From this day forward, my diet will mostly consist of cereals. In fact, tonight, late dinner will be...

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ME

There's been much negativity within me that sometimes I give up countering them. I say to hell with the worries, what will be will be. Time and again, griping against the grind, it's better said than done.

But at a single moment right there, seconds before I got inspired to create this post, I felt content. So there's hope. I've said this before, I believe what someone had already learned, everything good comes to those who wait.

What if I will have to wait a lifetime? There's the negativity again. Drat.

What? We had a funny but at the same time annoying experience this afternoon in this famous restaurant. Some of their food items are grouped as separate meals and are labelled A, B, C, D, E, F whatever. We ordered meal E and waited. A few minutes later, the waiter came up with the wrong order. There was a mistake, we told him. We did not order for "this and that". So he asked,"Did you not order for A ma'am?" No, we said, we ordered for Meal E. Then he clarified, which A ma'am? A as in apple or A as in elephant? Mabuang ko!

Taga-Dumaguete ni siya. Matud pa niya usa kuno siya ka inahan, cool mom kuno siya. Ambot lang kung tinuod, haha. Am having a video overload. Which means my mind is messed up. Don't know why I'm so pissed off when it's supposed to be payday (and flyday?) today. Had to do with my growing impatience with people, especially those doing services. I was not like this but now I detest falling in line. Worse, I make mental critiques everytime for the simplest of gaffes...

Caught up with the TV earlier and was amused at a congressman shouting "You lie!" at Barack Obama in the middle of his speech. Serena Williams lying to the referee when called to task for being disrespectful to a lineswoman. (I tried uploading the video but this internet cafe @#$#% for disallowing right-click and cookies, too bad I'm already in for an hour; definitely a turn off. I'm never coming back to this #$%^&*^ place!) Kanye West disrespecting Taylor Swift at an awards show. Ping Lacson trashing Erap and Jinggoy following suit, rumesbak kay Lacson.

The world is full of disrespect! No wonder that I seem to be getting the bad vibe.
