Aberdeenshire businesses fined more than £28,000 for illegal workers

Four Aberdeenshire restaurants have been fined a total of £28,750 in civil penalties for employing illegal workers, details recently published by the UK Border Agency show.

As part of the ongoing crackdown into illegal working, the takeaways and restaurants were visited in late 2011 and January this year.

Porto Rico's in Ladeside Road, Port Elphinstone was visited in August 2011 and 3 Pakistani members of staff were found to have no right to work in the UK.
Our officers visited the Massala Garden takeaway in Brighton Place, Peterculter in October 2011, where 1 Bangladeshi man was working illegally.

Porto Rico's in Broad Street, Peterhead was visited in November 2011, and 2 Pakistani men were working illegally there.

In January 2012, officers visited the Spice Cottage in South Road, Oldmeldrum, where 4 Bangladeshi men with no right to work in the UK were found.

All 4 businesses were issued with potential fine notices for employing illegal workers.

They were then given an opportunity to prove that the correct right-to-work checks were made before the workers were taken on.

They failed to do so and have now been handed fines of £10,000 for Porto Rico's in Port Elphinstone, £5,000 for Massala Garden,
£8,750 for Porto Rico's in Peterhead and £5,000 for the Spice Cottage.

Rob Whiteman, chief executive, UK Border Agency said:

'Our officers are carrying out operations throughout Aberdeenshire to target unscrupulous employers who hire illegal workers,
are undercutting wages and potentially exploiting vulnerable workers.

'The UK Border Agency is happy to work with businesses and advise what checks need to be carried out on staff,
but those who do break the law should know that they will face heavy fines like these businesses.

'Tip-offs from the public can be a vital part of our operations,
and our new national allegations database which was recently introduced will help ensure we make the most of every piece of information we're given.

Eight arrests in London visa fraud investigation

Our officers today raided 9 properties and arrested 8 people as part of a major investigation into a suspected visa fraud network based in London.

Early this morning, our investigators carried out raids on 5 residential addresses in Brent, Harrow, Southall, Hayes and Kilburn.

In addition searches were carried out at 4 separate business premises in Harrow and Park Royal. Two of those involved the offices of immigration law advisors.

The arrests were the culmination of a year-long investigation into a criminal network suspected of assisting hundreds of clients, mainly Indian,
Pakistani and Nepali nationals,
to fraudulently apply for UK visas. Clients would typically pay thousands of pounds each.

Andy Shortland, criminal and financial investigation team in West London, UK Border Agency said:
'Our investigation is targeting an organised network suspected of being involved in a complex and systematic attempt to evade the UK's immigration controls.

'That investigation will continue with the evidence we have seized today.'

Those arrested were:

1) British male (aged 31) arrested at an address in Church Lane, Brent
2) British male (32) arrested at an address in Church Lane, Brent
3) British male (35) arrested at an address in Church Lane, Brent
4) British male (34) arrested at an address in Swanage Waye, Hayes
5) Indian male (32) arrested at an address in St Pauls Avenue, Harrow
6) British male (32) arrested at an address in North Road, Southall
7) British male (32) arrested at an address in North Road, Southall
8) British male (30) arrested at an address in Mortimer Crescent, Kilburn

All were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud and are now being questioned at a police station in London.

Our West London criminal and financial investigation team is a specialist unit of police officers seconded from the Metropolitan Police working alongside our warranted officers to investigate organised immigration crime.

As previously announced, a number of changes to the Immigration Rules are coming into effect today.

New Rules now apply for extending your visa

If you are applying to extend your visa under the points-based system, all working and student routes, visiting routes, long residency routes and discharged HM Forces and UK ancestry routes, new rules will now apply.

If you have limited leave to enter or remain in the UK and wish to extend your visa, you must apply within 28 days of your current visa expiring. Your application for further leave will be refused if you have overstayed your visa by more than 28 days when you apply.

If you have no right to be in the country we expect you to leave voluntarily and we will enforce your return if you fail to do so. Where we need to enforce someone's return they may be subject to a ban on re-entering the UK.

Course OverviewThis Level 7 programme is suitable for UK, EU and International students. The programme focuses on critical analysis of management issues. There is the option to study either call centre, health care and hospitality. This course introduces the fundamental elements of economics and the business environment and the impact on managing your team, company in a competitive market, assessing strategies in a micro and macro environment.

Language courses at Newcastle College are excellent preparation for A Levels, the International Foundation Programme (IFP) and all our other courses including our Honours Degrees. Most students prepare for the IELTS examination.

English Language (EFL) - What will you study?
You will study 15 (for EU students only), 21 or 25 hours each week all year round.

Which level should you study?
Elementary (A2)*
For students who have a little knowledge of English or who have studied in the past and have either forgotten what they have learned or lost confidence.

Pre-intermediate (B1)*
For students who have a basic knowledge of English and can express themselves in easy everyday situations.

Intermediate (B2)
For students who have reached quite a good level of competence and can express themselves with confidence in English in most everyday situations.

Upper-intermediate (C1)

Course Dates and Fees
English Language courses at Newcastle College are flexible with many start dates. The IELTS test fee is included in the course fee for International students (minimum 3 months study) on set dates. IELTS Exams are held in August, December, May, June and July. EU students will be charged for their IELTS exam (currently £105). If you want to take an IELTS test at other times, you must organise and pay for this yourself.

History

Newcastle, known at the time as "Pons Aelius" was founded by the Roman Emperor Hadrian, whose Wall is still visible in parts of Newcastle,
particularly along the West Road. The course of the "Roman Wall" can also be traced eastwards to Wallsend (Segedunum).

After the Roman withdrawal from Britain, Newcastle became part of the powerful Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Northumbria and was known throughout this
period as Monkchester. After a series of conflicts with the Danes and the devastation north of the River Tyne inflicted by Odo after the 1080
rebellion against the Normans, Monkchester was all but destroyed. Because of its strategic position, Robert Curthose, son of the Conqueror,
erected a wooden castle there in 1080 and the town was henceforth known as Novum Castellum or Newcastle.

Throughout the Middle Ages, Newcastle was England's northern fortress, in the Border war against Scotland. The Scots king William the Lion was
imprisoned in Newcastle in 1174, and Edward I brought the Stone of Scone and William Wallace south through the town. Newcastle was successfully
defended against the Scots three times during the 14th century and around this time became a county corporate.

King Charles bestowed upon Newcastle the East of England coal trading rights. This monopoly helped Newcastle prosper, but it had its impact on
the growth of near-neighbours Sunderland, causing a Tyne-Wear rivalry that still exists. During the English Civil War, Newcastle supported the
king and in 1644 was stormed ('with roaring drummes') by Cromwell's Scots allies, based in pro-Parliament Sunderland. The grateful King bestowed
the motto "Fortiter Defendit Triumphans" ("Triumphing by a brave defence") upon the town. Ironically, Charles was imprisoned in Newcastle by the
Scots in 1646-7.

In the 18th century, Newcastle was the country's largest print centre after London, Oxford and Cambridge, and the Literary and Philosophical
Society of 1793, with its erudite debates and large stock of books in several languages predated the London Library by half a century.
Newcastle also became the greatest glass producer in the world. Newcastle's development as a major city, however, owed most to its central
role in the export of coal. The phrase taking coals to Newcastle was first recorded in 1538. In the nineteenth century, shipbuilding and heavy
engineering were central to the city's prosperity; and the city was a powerhouse of the Industrial Revolution. Innovation in Newcastle and
surrounding areas included the development of Safety lamps, Stephenson's Rocket, Lord Armstrong's artillery, Joseph Swan's electric light bulbs,
and Charles Parsons' invention of the steam turbine, which led to the revolution of marine propulsion and the production of cheap electricity.

The MetrocentreThe Metrocentre in Gateshead is one of Europe's largest shopping and leisure centres with over 300 retailers and 50 cafes and restaurants-
just a short bus or train journey from Newcastle city centre.

MarketsEvery Sunday there is a traditional street market on the Quayside selling everything and anything, and an Arts and Crafts market on the
Armstrong Bridge in Jesmond. Farmers markets are run on the first Friday of each month at Monument, where you can buy meats, cheese,
confectionery and other local produce.

Entertainment
Pubs and clubsThe Rough Guide hailed a night out in Newcastle as the best of British – and we agree. With several areas around the city centre where the nightlife
is bustling, you’ll never be limited for options. There’s the infamous Bigg Market, popular Quayside and new chic establishments around Central
Station. And then there’s The Fate 0 a £75million city-centre entertainment venue willed with bars, restaurants, a club, casino and multi-screen cinema.
A short metro ride away is the lively Osbourne Road in Jesmond with a good choice of bars and restaurants, and lots of student life.

Eating outAll tastes and budgets are catered for at the hundreds of restaurants and cafes in and around Newcastle. Spanish, Italian, Mexican, French,
Japanese Portuguese, Polish, Mongolian and Indian as well as a la carte or a simple burger. For an authentic Chinese meal, head for Chinatown.
You could even dine in the UK’s oldest dining room at the city’s first –class Blackfriars Restaurant.

Cinema and theatreThere are three major theatres in Newcastle - the Theatre Royal, the Tyne Theatre and the Newcastle Playhouse. All play host to touring plays
and local acts. There is a multi-screen cinema complex at The Gate where you can catch all the latest releases, as well as the Tyneside Cinema
which shows art house films as well as cult movies. Whatever your cultural taste, there will be something to wet your appetite.

Music
Music venues and concertsThere are plenty of music venues in and around the city, from gig venues such as the Carling Academy, to larger concert venues such as the City
Hall, the Sage and the Metro radio Arena. Recent guests have included Beyonce, Take That, Lady Gaga and Michel Buble. Newcastle is also host to
annual Jazz, Asian and Irish festivals.

Music ShoppingNorthumberland Street is the place to find the large record chains, HMV and Virgin. Newcastle also boasts a range of smaller independent stores
specialising in dance, blues, country, jazz, hip hop, reggae and more! The bargain hunter should head for Steel Wheels for a wide selection of
second hand records and CDs. If playing a musical instrument is your passion, Windows stocks a varied range of sheet music instruments and quality
hi-fi equipment.

Art & cultureNewcastle is one of the most beautiful cities in the UK, with stunning architecture throughout. Most notable is Grey Street which was voted the
best street in Britain by radio 4 listeners, the Quayside development and the landmark Tyne Bridge.

For a day out with a difference head to the redeveloped south bank of the River Tyne, which is home to an array of cultural venues;
stroll across the award winning Millennium Bridge and discover the BALTIC art gallery and the Sage Music Centre - an international home for
musical discovery.

There are also many art galleries and museums located throughout the city. The Discovery Museum is a two-minute walk from the College's Rye Hill
Campus, whilst the Hancock Museum and the Laing Art Gallery are in the city centre. The Side Photographic Gallery, the Biscuit Factory and the
Waygood Gallery are also worth a look. Of course no tour of Newcastle is complete without a trip to Antony Gormley's stunning Angel of the North
which looks out from 65 feet high across the A1.

SportSt James' Park is the home of Newcastle United, one of the most famous and best supported football teams in the England.

Newcastle College is investing millions of pounds creating a wonderful study environment. In November 2004, the college opened its £21 million Music and Performing Arts Centre -
the biggest and most modern in the FE sector in the UK. Our brand new HE centre 'Space' provides a fantastic social venue for our HE students and our
£16 million Lifestyle Academy is due to open in September 2006.The college is located in central Newcastle, close to both universities and close to the international airport,
