In today’s lesson we are looking at the oranisation of the League of Nations. In particular, I want you to consider examples of strengths and weaknesses in the League and consider how well it was organised. To start off with you need to make a Venn Diagram on Microsoft Publisher:

A Venn Diagram has two interlocking circles. One circle will be for strengths, and one will be for weaknesses. Where they overlap you could put examples that are both strengths and weaknesses. Once you have made the outline you need to copy and paste examples from pages 1 to 3 of this reading. Make sure the text makes sense on its own, you may need to change it slightly. Only go as far as the structure, we are not yet considering membership problems.

Once you have done that you should complete this online progress check. This is designed to make sure you have idenitfied some of the key examples and also to encourage you to write a 6 mark exam style question.

Finally you could watch this short video to recap your learning.

In today’s lesson we want to:

- review the terms of the Treaty of Versailles
- sort arguments about whether the Treaty was fair
- begin to form our own views about whether the Treaty was fair

Using your GARGLE powerpoint from two weeks ago, try to complete this document. Once you’ve done that save it to your History folder.

Then try to sort out the arguments on this arguments powerpoint. Be careful, you need to sort them based on what they say, not whether you agree with it or whether you think it is fair. Again. Make sure you save it to your documents once you’re finished.

EXTENSION: Use page 68 and 69. Try to add extra points to the arguments powerpoint. This task will improve your ability to pick out examples from more sophisticated text, which will be an important skill in your controlled assessment.

If you have headphones you could listen to two of my former students explain whether it was fair:

And you could watch this BBC revision video:

Finally, you could add a second page to the arguments powerpoint, bullet pointing your views on whether the Treaty was fair.

Recently we have looked at Henry VIII and why people tend to remember the fat, angry Henry. If you want to watch the Horrible Histories song that we watched you can see it here. As part of our investigation we have also looked at Henry closing the monasteries. Your homework is to write an imaginary report from one of the investigators that Thomas Cromwell sent out: Write 1 or 2 paragraphs from a report on a monastery. It must include evidence of rules being broken, but must be appropriate for school – nothing that would embarrass your mum! It should include lively interesting description. It could include evidence that the report was not completely fair. You could start it with: Yesterday I visited Eynsham Abbey. When I arrived… Here are some of the rules that the monks had to follow: You can do this homework without knowing anything more about Eynsham Abbey. However, if you would like to find out more you could look at this very detailed website. Or there is a short walk that you can actually do in Eynsham.

These pages contains a number of revision activities including notes, games, and card sorts. There are also a number of videos looking at some of the key questions, including
‘What problems did Elizabeth face in 1588?‘,
‘What was the importance of the court and ministers in Elizabethan government?’, and
‘How successfully did Elizabeth deal with the issue of succession?’.

Over the next few days I will be adding more materials to these pages to help students preparing for their exams this May. The first addition is a new video looking at the popularity and effectiveness of Elizabeth’s government at the end of her reign. This is supported by revision notes, and also a range of revision games on this page.

The video is hosted on youtube so may not be available on all school networks:

In our final lesson of the term, Year 9 looked at what happened when Hitler turned his attentions from destroying the RAF to bombing the cities of Britain. We watched this short film from the BBC archive:

We then considered why it is difficult to know if there was a ‘Blitz Spirit’. The BBC archive has a range of other contemporary films and radio recordings, as well as programmes made after the war. It is well worth a look if you want to find out more about the events that we have studied.

Your enrichment homework is to research the life of one of three different pilots in the Second World War. They are:

Douglas Bader (Link to Spartacus website)

Cy Grant (Link to Telegraph Newspaper)

Margaret Frost (Link to BBC website)

Once you’ve got a basic outline of their life in the war, then your task is to complete a ‘Fakebook profile‘ for them. For an idea of what it could be like, look at the example of Josef Stalin. A copy of the instructions can be downloaded here. Remember to print out your completed profile. Alternatively you can copy and paste the address of your profile in a comment to this post.
