RSS Feed : Is it Relevant?

I read a post today on ReadWriteWeb mentioning that RSS readers continue to decline. A question was being asked: Do people still use them and is there still a viable market for them?

RSS Is A Good Resource

Personally, I do keep track of RSS daily using Google reader. I like RSS as it simplies the task for me to keep track on the latest news and information from many websites or blog.

There are many websites that I follow daily. Using the RSS reader helps me to remove the repetitive tasks to enter website address into the URL bar and browse the website one by one. I simply log into the Google reader and all the latest news and posts are being synchonized and update at a same place.

I categorize my feed and I can immediately see the latest news and update across many different category.

Very importantly, I can then participate to leave comments on some interesting post to generate one way link back to my site and also to source for ideas on what to write on my blog.

In short, RSS is still relevant and it is a good resource to me to both to generate links and to generate new ideas for my content.

Google Wave

What is a wave?

According to Google,

A wave is equal parts conversation and document. People can communicate and work together with richly formatted text, photos, videos, maps, and more.

I have just accepted a preview to Google wave and I am now testing it. I will update my experience on Google Wave on this blog shortly.

Federal Trade Commission (FTC)

FTC (Federal Trade Commission) just announced that it approved a final revisions to the guidance it gives to advertisers on how to keep their endorsement and testimonial ads in line with the FTC Act. This new FTC revision can affect all bloggers who write or endorse a product for payment or freebies in return.

Blogger : Disclose or Pay Fine

This marks the first time the FTC has updated endorsement and testimonial rules since 1980. Violations could result in a $16,000 fine. The fine used to be $11,000 but it was increased to $16,000 within the past year. All possible violations will be reviewed on a case by case basis.

While the FTC will obviously have a hard time enforcing these regulations. In order for a blogger to be fined for not disclosing they were being paid by an advertiser to review a product, there would have to be a complaint, an investigation and ultimately a court ruling mandating a fine.

Anyway, if you do blog or write about a product and you are paid, just make sure you do all the appropriate disclosure to avoid the trouble.

Google Offer Pages for Places

Google recently launched a new offer in its Google map service. You can now create a single page for a single place on the map. Google termed it “One Place, One Page“.

What is Google Place Page?

A Place Page is a web page for every place in the world, organizing all the world’s information for that place. Google mentioned in its blog that they really mean every place. You can create Place Pages for businesses, points of interest, transit stations, landmarks, and cities all over the world. To find a Place Page, click on “more info” in your Google Maps search results or “more info” in the info bubble on the map.

Any Implication on SEO?

As Google offers this new service, do you think creating a page helps to rank better in search engine, commonly term as SEO (Search Engine Optimization).

I found an article on Search Engine Land saying that Google claimed that they will not crawl or index the place pages. However, there seemed to have  a twist of the event that Google would index the place page, which I saw on another search marketing article saying that some place pages have been indexed.

I find it hard to believe that Google will not index their own place pages. They might not do it now but it is just a fact sooner or later. If you have a business either offline or online, you must create a place page now on Google and I am sure that will bring you some good business exposure.

To sum up, I interpreted that technology and internet revolution have driven down the entry barrier and all of us can enjoy the free flow of knowledge and information. It is time to translate all the knowledge and information and start building our own technology and internet business.
