Seed Bead Sizes

Round seed beads and cylinder beads are sized according to numbers called aught sizes. The most common sizes you will find at bead shops and online are 15/0 (smallest), followed by 11/0, 10/0, 8/0, 6/0 and 5/0 (largest, also sometimes called an “E” bead). The size may also be written with the number followed by what looks like a degree symbol.

When seed beads were first being manufactured, the standard size bead was referred to as the “null” or “aught” bead. No one knows for sure how the sizes were developed, but it is believed that they were numbered according to how many beads could be lined up side by side in the space of one inch. Accordingly, the larger the number, the smaller the seed bead.

It is also helpful to know that some shaped seed beads such as triangle beads, cubes and bugle beads do not necessarily hold to the aught sizing system. Bugle beads, for instance, are usually sized according to their length in millimeters and noted as a pound sign (#) followed by a number. Cubes beads are usually just labeled according to their size in millimeters, and triangle beads are either labeled with aught sizes or with a system similar to that of the bugle beads.

חברות יקרות, תמה תחרות החריזה שלנו. אני רוצה להודות לכל המשתתפות על העבודות המושקעות והמקוריות. הצלחתן לרגש אותי ואת חבר השופטים. הבחירה לא הייתה קלה ובכל זאת להלן תוצאות :

1) במקום הראשון זכתה ניצה אריאלי עם עבודת שרשרת הפרחים המקורית שעמדה בדיוק בקטגוריות שהצבנו כולל התאמת הצבעים והמקוריות.

2) במקום השני זכתה סבטלנה דובינסקי עם עבודת שרשרת פרחים מקורית ויוצאת דופן במורכבותה.

3) במקום השלישי זכתה אנה ברסקי על עבודת מחרוזת השעון המקורית והמעניינת.

לסיום אני שוב רוצה להודות מקרב לב לכל המשתתפות בתחרות ושמחה לבשר כי החלטנו לזכות את כל שאר המשתתפות בפרס ניחומים של 15% הנחה בקניה הבאה באתר.

היכינו! תחרות החריזה של ניקולין חרוזים יצאה לדרך!

כללי התחרות:

על המשתתפים ליצור תכשיט על פי שילוב מהצבעים הבאים:

*הצבעים הם: ירוק חקי, ורוד בהיר, סגול, צהוב, סלמון, אדום, ויולט, כחול, טורקיז

*התחרות פתוחה למקצוענים וחובבנים מכל הארץ.

כל משתתף יכול להגיש עבודה מכל או מחלק משילובי הצבעים. ניתן להגיש עד 3 עבודות.
כל עבודה חייבת להיות עבודה עצמית ומקורית, ולא מועתקת.
כל תכשיט חייב להיות עשוי מונציות ואו חרוזי זכוכית או קריסטלים.
כל משתתף חייב להגיש 2 תמונות:
1) תמונה של כל התכשיט כולל סוגר.
2) תמונת תקריב (פוקוס) של התכשיט.
התמונה חייבת להיות נקיה בלי כיתוב על רקע לבן או אפור, לא פחות מ1000 פיקלים.

הליך השיפוט.
בהליך השיפוט ישנם 3 שופטים שמחליטים. נא להזדרז ולהגיש תמונות עד ה1.8.10

קטגוריות השיפוט הם:
-שימוש צבעים
-יחודיות
-טכניקות
-חומרים
-רושם כללי

10 הפינליסטים יפורסמו בבלוג ותהיה הצבעה של הקהל.
שלושת העבודות הזוכות יתפרסמו בבלוג.

BEAD CORDS and THREADS

People often confuse BEAD CORDS and THREADS.

Beading Threads are very thin ribbons, and are meant to be fully covered with beads, thus hidden within your pieces. They are typically waxed with beeswax to keep them from fraying. Threads, once waxed, are actually stronger and more durable than bead cords, but they are unsightly. Threads are used in both bead weaving and bead stringing projects.

Beading Cords are threads that are braided together, to make them visually attractive. But you don't wax bead cords -- this would make them ugly. So bead cords will have problems of fraying and stetching that waxed threads will not. Bead Cords are used for projects where you want the cord to show, like putting knots between beads, or tin cup necklaces where you have a cluster of beads, then a length of cord showing, and then another cluster of beads, then the cord, and so forth.

No Business Like Show Business
If you do craft shows, you know show season is upon us and it’s time to dust off the canopy and prepare for the warm months ahead and a busy schedule. There are so many fun things about doing craft shows: getting outdoors, meeting new people, developing relationships with customers and other artists, and making money! Doing craft shows is also very hard work and there’s been lots written on how to assure success at shows. You’ve probably heard a lot of it. Make eye contact, don’t sit all day, encourage people to come into your booth.

Have a Positive Attitude

During these economic times, though, just as we’re having to make adjustments in other areas of our lives, there may need to be a bit of a shift in the way we approach selling our jewelry. Let’s face it, buying jewelry has always been a luxury. But I believe it doesn’t have to be a luxury women forego. Plus, often when people feel the most stressed, buying themselves a small gift is exactly what they want to do. Having a positive attitude is rule number one for selling.

Make It Easier for Customers to Buy

Today’s market requires a good range of price points. That doesn’t mean giving away pieces for pennies that took you hours to make. But come up with some new, original designs that take little time with inexpensive materials and make them available next to your more expensive pieces. If you draw a crowd with beautiful designs, priced to sell, chances are your pricier pieces will be hard for some of them to resist!

צילום תכשיטים – קשה אבל לא בלתי אפשרי

צילום תכשיטים הוא אתגר רציני לחובבי צילום ואף לצלמים מקצועיים.
בצילום תכשיט השאיפה שיראו את כל הפרטים הקטנים בו, שהצבע של האבן יצא עמוק ואמיתי ככל האפשר וכמובן שהתכשיט ישמור על הברק שלו.
אבל הבעיות המרכזיות הן שתכשיטים מבריקים מחזירים את נצנוצי האור וניתן לראות עליהם את ההשתקפות של כל מה שבחדר (כולל הצלם ומצלמתו), האבנים מאבדות את הצבע הייחודי שלהן (ונוטות ללבן-חלבי או לשחור) והתסכול רב.
להלן מספר הצעות לחובבים המעוניינים להגיע לתוצאות מוצלחות יותר:
- קודם כל, אין לצלם עם מבזק ("פלאש") מול התכשיט עצמו. התכשיט יחזיר את ההבזק ותקבלו השתקפויות. במקרה של צילום עם מבזק מומלץ לשנות זוית.
- מומלץ לא לעשות שימוש במבזק בכלל ולהשתמש בתאורה טבעית רבה ככל האפשר. עם זאת, בגלל שהתכשיטים מבריקים ועל מנת להשיג אמינות גבוהה של צבעי האבנים – יש לרכך את התאורה. לצורך כך אפשר לבנות מעין "חופה" לתכשיט מבד אורגנזה (טול) לבן או שמנת ולהכניס רק את עדשת המצלמה לתוכה. האור יעבור למעשה דרך הבד והתאורה תתרכך.
- את התכשיטים יש לצלם באמצעות עדשת מאקרו (או לעשות שימוש בפונקצייה הזו במצלמה דיגיטלית). יש לצלם ממרחק רב ככל האפשר עם זום גדול ואח"כ לחתוך את התמונה באמצעות תוכנה לעיבוד תמונה. הניגודיות שתתקבל בין הרקע לתכשיט תבליט אותו ותחמיא לפרטים הקטנים.
- רקע לבן, או כל צבע חלק אחר, עשויים להתקבל בצורה יפה אך ניתן לגוון כיד הדמיון. עם זאת, לא מומלץ לצלם תכשיטי כסף על רקע ירוק משום שהם יראו כתכשיטי זהב.

Here are some tips to keep in mind as you design your own breezy beaded jewelry!
1. Use materials that are comfortable against your skin. Our open necklines and bare arms make summer a revealing season. Consider smooth-surfaced beads like resin, stone, pearls, Lucite, round seed beads, and lampwork. Also, avoid components with large, flat areas, as they tend to stick to your skin.
2. Make pieces that lie against clothing, not skin. Longer necklaces with modest clasps make good hot-weather pieces since they minimize the jewelry that touches your skin. Plus, longer necklaces look wonderful worn with breezy summer fashions such as a long tank or T-shirt.

3. Look to nature for color inspiration. Like fruits and veggies, colors of summer jewelry should be fresh and vibrant. Look at the wealth of summer greens in a single hosta plant, the frothy, creamy naturals in the sand, or the myriad blues and greens of the ocean reflected in the sky. Different oceans have different colors, too. My trips to the Jersey shore yield me a much different palette of blues and greens than, say, a vacation in Barbados!
4. Keep it lightweight. In the heat of the summer, no one wants to feel anything but airy. Use medium to light stones, beads, and chain gauges. Layer delicate lengths and save that nice chunky brass rollo chain for October.
5. Make open space work for you. Space out your primary beads, linking them between strands of seed beads or loops of small stones, or dangle them from colorful and featherweight titanium jump rings around a lightweight chain. This reduces the weight (visually and virtually) of a piece as well as making it lighter on your budget.

6. Avoid short choker or princess-length necklaces that rest against your neck unless they’re very delicate.
7. Have fun with larger earrings! Summer style means open, collarless necklines and pulled up hairdos, so take advantage of your exposed lobes.

Prevent Bugle Beads from Cutting your Thread

Do you love to work with bugle beads in your bead work but hate the way that their sharp edges cut through your beading thread? Here's a great way to keep the bugle beads from cutting through your thread. First, inspect your bugle beads. If they are very rough or sharp at the edges, make sure you can incorporate a small seed bead as a "buffer". You can place a seed bead at the end of each bugle so that the thread will exit (and have its tension over) a seed bead instead of the edge of a bugle bead. Most beading projects are not so exacting as to be disturbed by this small change of size and you'll be so much happier with fewer cut threads. You can even use the added seed beads as a design element - just take the project colors into account and use a similar or contrasting color or a slightly different finish in the seed bead glass versus the bugle bead glass. Some beaders have suggested that filing or sanding the edge of a bugle bead wil help cut down on cutting, but I don't recommend this. It is too easy to have the bugle break in your hands, causing injury or to have the edge chip more after it has been filed. Plus, it is pretty time-consuming to file down 200 or so bugle beads, so if you need to use bugle beads, try edging them with the seed bead to make your beading flow smoothly.

How to Bead a Spiral Rope

1. Tie on a tension bead. String 3 core beads and 5 outside beads.

2. Pass up through the first 3 core beads just strung and pull tight.

3. String 1 core bead and 5 outside beads. Pass up through the previous 2 core beads added. Pull tight.

4. Pass through the core bead last strung and pull tight, flipping the loop of outside beads to the right.

5. Repeat Steps 3 and 4 to your desired length.
