MWANAMICHEZO na mfanyabiashara maarufu nchini, Azi m Dewji amekunwa na mafanikio ya timu ya Soka ya Taifa ya Zambia `Chipolopolo’, na jana alithibitisha furaha yake kwa kumpatia kila mchezaji wa timu hiyo kitita cha dola 500 za Kimarekani.

Kutokana na kiwango hicho cha fedha, Dewji amelazimika kutoka zaidi ya dola 13,000 (sh milioni 22.1 za Tanzania) kwa ajili ya wachezaji 23 na viongozi wa timu hiyo waliopo Gabon, moja ya nchi mbili zilizoandaa michuano hiyo mikubwa, yenye mvuto na utajiri mkubwa wa fedha miongoni mwa timu za taifa barani Afrika. Nyingine ni Ikweta ya Guinea.
Dewji, aliyeiwezesha Simba kucheza fainali za Kombe la CAF mwaka 1993, alikabidhi kiasi hicho cha fedha kwa Rais wa Shirikisho la Soka Zambia (FAZ), Boniface Mwamelo katika ghafla fupi iliyofanyika jijini Lusaka, Zambia.
Akikabidhi, Dewji ambaye yuko nchini humo kwa shughuli za biashara, alisema ameguswa na mafanikio hayo yaliyorejesha heshima ya soka kwa nchi za Kusini mwa Bara la Afrika.
“Zambia ni majirani zetu, tunapakana nao. Lazima tujivunie mafanikio haya kwa sababu si ya Zambia peke yao, bali ya Ukanda huu wote,” alisema Dewji akiongeza kuwa, Zambia ni ndugu wa kweli na waliwahi kuwa wanachama wa CECAFA, Baraza la Soka Afrika Mashariki na Kati ambalo Tanzania ni miongoni mwa wanachama wake.

Pamoja na kuizawadia Zambia, alisema atakuwa tayari kufanya hivyo kwa timu yoyote itakayofanya vizuri, ikiwamo timu ya soka ya Tanzania `Taifa Stars’.

“Kama timu inatoka ukanda huu, sitabagua, nitawatuza kwa heshima wanayoileta. Hata Twiga Stars wamefanya vizuri hivi karibuni nimewazawadia, lakini si busara kutangaza kila kitu, hata kwa vitu vidogo…” alisema na kusema kwa kila hatua watakayopiga Zambia katika michuano ya mwaka huu, atawazawadia wachezaji.
Aidha, aliahidi kumwaga fedha zaidi kama wataifumua Ghana katika mchezo wa nusu fainali. Mchezo huo ulitarajiwa kufanyika jana usiku.
“Nitawapa fedha zaidi na pia nitawakumbuka kwa zawadi maalumu wajane wa wachezaji waliokufa katika ajali ya ndege Pwani ya Gabon mwaka 1993,” alisema Dewji, Mkurugenzi wa kampuni ya Simba Trailers inayounda bodi za magari makubwa, yakiwemo ya mizigo na ya abiria.

Zambia iliyopo Gabon chini ya nahodha Christopher Katongo, ilitua katika fainali za mwaka huu kwa kiapo cha kuwafuta machozi Wazambia ambao miaka 19 iliyopita walipoteza kikosi chote cha kwanza kilichokuwa gumzo wakati huo barani Afrika.
Rais wa sasa wa FAZ, Kalusha Bwalya alikuwemo katika kikosi, lakini alinusurika kwani alikuwa anatoka Ulaya alikokuwa akicheza soka ya kulipwa, akiamini angeungana na wenzake huko Dakar, Senegal ambako kikosi hicho kilikuwa kinakwenda kwa mchezo wa kuwania kufuzu kwa fainali za Kombe la Dunia mwaka 1994 nchini Marekani.

OLYMPIC DISASTER WAITING FOR TANZANIA AT LONDON 2012 , YET AGAIN!

London 2012 is finally around the corner. The Africa Cup of Nations started on Saturday 21st Jan 2012. This is a year of sport for sports enthusiasts. Except Tanzanian sports lovers are regretting the fact that they are missing at the Africa Cup of Nations and their participation in the Olympics is minimal.

The Olympics are held once every 4 years and are the pinnacle of sports events. The amount of TV coverage and media focus on athletes is massive even by global standards. It is a win at the Olympics that makes a sportsman a true icon of the sport and shows that the individual, or the team for the matter, has become a global champion of the World. This has happened to the US Swimming team while the US Basketball team was seen to have failed for having missed the crown.

Tanzania on the other hand is still waiting to take home a crown. This only happened at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow when Filbert Bayi won a silver medal in the 3000m steeplechase and Suleiman Nyambui won the 5000m.

FAILING TO PLAN IS PLANNING TO FAIL

The question then is what ails Tanzania in terms of sports? It is a question whose answer readily comes to mind if you consider the old but true saying that if one fails to plan, one is actually planning to fail.

The Olympics games are the World’s stage for excellence in performance. Olympic athletes are tried and tested endurance performers. So how is it that Tanzania has generally prepared for failure by failing to plan?

PLAN: The best way to achieve set goals is to have a set goal. It looks more certain than ever that the Tanzania Olympic Committee (TOC) has no set targets to which they are working. At TOC it is business as usual. The public is not even aware of what their target is. In contrast, Kenya who have several times been winners of 5- 8 Gold medals at previous Olympics announce every Olympic year what their target is.

RESOURCES: It is also clear that Government investment into sporting resources is far from satisfactory. The very idea of stopping sports from being in the curriculum in schools has contributed negatively in the quest to develop sports. Simply sporting talent is seen, identified from age seven to 13. Anyone starting sports at 23 is already too late in many sporting disciplines.

TRAINING: We are not developing and using many sports trainers from within a local pool of talent. The result is that we are short of coaches and sports talent spotters. We have too many arm chair strategists in Tanzanian sports.

MANAGEMENT: Management is probably the worst of Tanzania"s problems. Even with the former Tanzania Golf Union Chairman, Dinoz Malinzi, as Chaiman of the National Sports Council, it seems that Tanzania is still going to go against the average of 1 manager for every 15 athletes as the Olympic Charter proposes. This simply means for every 15 athletes, a team should have on average 2 officials. However it has become traditional for Tanzania to have a representation of 7 athletes and 15 officials.

The question then is what would these 15 officials be doing managing 7 athletes across 2 or so disciplines? If resources are the problem why can't these 7 athletes be handled by 1 official and supported by the High Commission officials? The Tanzania High Commission in London is one of the biggest worldwide. They have a cultural attache who could coordinate and assist the sports delegates and Tanzanians in London could also provide assistance. This would save the Government money.

Is it fair to use these games as the opportunity to fly girl friends to capitals of the World at Tax Payers cost?

What is the Ministry in charge of Youth and Sport doing to curb this reckless and wanton squandering of public coffers by our managers of sports. Plenty it seems need to be done to bring a sense of order into sports management if we are to create jobs ad opportunities for young Tanzanians with talent.

In todays world sports is business. We are still managing it as child’s play. To our own detriment. When shall we wake up and realise?

Miamba ya soka Tanzania,Simba na Yanga zimedhalilika mjini Zanzibar zinakoshiriki michuano ya kuwania kombe la Mapinduzi inayofanyika Uwanja wa Amani mjini humo.
Yanga ndiyo iliyoonja joto kali la jiwe baada ya kujikuta ikichapwa tena magoli 3-0 na timu ya walamba koni ya Azam FC katika mechi ambayo ilikuwa ya kutafutwa mshindi wa pili atakayeingia kwenye raundi ya nusu fainali kwenye kundi lake.

Awali Yanga ilifungwa goli 1-0 na timu ya Mafunzo ya Zanzibar na baadaye ilifanikiwa kuichabanga timu ya Kikwajuni magoli 2-0 kabla ya kuaga michuano hiyo kwa kukubali magoli 3-0 dhidi ya Azam.

Katika kundi hilo, timu ya Azam na Mafunzo ndizo zilizofanikiwa kuingia nusu fainali kuwania kombe hilo la uhuru kwa Serikali ya Mapinduzi Zanzibar.

Nayo Simba ilianza michuano hiyo kwa kutandikwa magoli 3-2 na timu ya Jamhuri kutoka Pemba , lakini baadaye ikafufua matumaini baada ya kuichapa timu ya Miembeni magoli 4-3 katika mchezo ambao wengi walisema timu hiyo ililemewa.

Baadhi ya mashabiki walisema Simba iliokolewa na kiongozi wa timu ya Miembeni akidaiwa kwamba alikwenda kwenye benchi la ufundi dakika za mwisho na kutoa maelekezo ambayo yanadaiwa ya kuwapoza wachezaji watoe mwanya kwa SDimba kushinda.

Hata hivyo uvumi huo ulipingwa vikali na viongozi wa Simba ambao walisisitiza kwamba walishinda kihalali.

Pamoja na ushindi huo, Simba ya sasa inaonyesha udhaifu mkubwa katika eneo la ulinzi kwani inakubali kufungwa magoli mengi tofauti na matarajio ya mashabiki wa timu hiyo.

Simba usiku wa kuamkia leo inatarajia kuchuana na KMKM na tayari iumeapa kufia uwanjani ili kushinda mechi hiyo.

TIMU za soka za Simba na Yanga za Dar es Salaam zimeuanza vibaya mwaka 2012 kwa kupata vipigo kwenye mechi za kuwania Kombe la Mapinduzi Zanzibar mwaka huu jambo ambalo limezitonesha kidonda timu hizo cha kufungwa kwenye mechi tofauti za kirafiki zilizofanyika wakati wa kumaliza mwaka 2011.

Yanga ndiyo ilikuwa ya kwanza ambapo Jumatatu usiku wa kuamkia Jumanne wiki hii ilicharazwa goli 1-0 na timu changa ya Mafunzo ya Zanzibar ukilinganisha na ukongwe wa Yanga.

Michuano ya Kombe la Mapinduzi inashirikisha timu tatu kutoka Tanzania Bara na zingine tatu za Tanzania Zanzibar.

Kipigo hicho kwa Yanga kilitokea wakati ikikumbuka kufungwa mwishoni mwa mwaka jana magoli 2-0 na timu ya Azam FC inayojiandaa kutawala Tanzania kisoka na kiuendeshaji kutokana na kuwa ya kwanza nchini kuwa na uwanja wa kisasa na maeneo mbalimbali ya kufanyia mazoezi.

Kwa upande wa Simba SC ambayo mwishoni mwa mwaka jana ilichabangwa magoli 3-2 na timy ya watengeneza Sukari Mtibwa ya Morogoro, usiku wa kuamkia leo Jumatano imekiona cha moto baada ya kuchapwa magoli 2-1 na timu ya Jamhuri kutoka Pemba.

Pigo hilo limekuja baada ya kushuhudia mkongwe mwenzake alipoburuzwa kwenye uwanja huohuo wa Amani Zanzibar kuwani kombe la Mapinduzi ambalo kwa sasa linashikiliwa na Simba.

Kufungwa kwa timu hizo kumewachefua mashabiki wake hususan walioko Tanzania bara ambao kwa jana walishindwa kutambiana kutokana na timu zao kugaragazwa kwenye mashindano hayo wakati zikiwa kwenye maandalizi makubwa ya Ligi Kuu ya VODACOM na pia zinajiandaa na michuano ya Afrika.

Yanga ambayo ni bingwa Tanzania, kwa sasa inajiandaa kumenyana na Zamalek ya Misri katika michuano ya Klabu Bingwa Afrika wakati nayo Simba inajiandaa kucheza na Kinyovu ya Rwanda katika mechi za Kombe la Shirikisho zinazoandaliwa na Shirikisho la Soka Afrika (CAF).

ARSENAL - Former full-back Lee Dixon

"I think that we are still short up front even with Thierry Henry. He might be needed to start a game or two but he will be of best use as an impact substitute. So it still stands that if Robin van Persie gets injured it will all come tumbling down. A striker is still needed.
"Elsewhere, it depends on injuries. At full-back, Andre Santos might be back soon, and there are certainly enough at the club so it's a matter of trying to get them back, rather than making panic buys. The forward positions need strengthening before the full-back areas, although it is a problem."
Potential targets: With Thierry Henry set to join the Gunners, Borussia Dortmund playmaker Mario Gotze, Lille midfielder Eden Hazard and Cologne striker Lukas Podolski have been linked with the club. Manchester City's Wayne Bridge could also solve their full-back problems.
ASTON VILLA - Former manager Graham Taylor "I think manager Alex McLeish needs to get someone who can break out from central midfield, create goals, score a few goals themselves and in the process feed Charles N'Zogbia and Darren Bent.
"N'Zogbia has been a disappointment but we know that, if you get the ball into the area - or played into the right areas, Bent is a consistent goalscorer. I would say a central midfield player who can provide that service is what they need in January."
Potential targets: Villa are among several clubs aiming to bring in Chelsea midfielder Josh McEachran on loan. Bayer Leverkusen's Swiss international midfielder Tranquillo Barnetta and Nottingham Forest full-back Chris Gunter are other names in the frame.
BLACKBURN - Former striker Kevin Gallacher "It might be a case of wheeling and dealing in January for Blackburn, with one player moving on to enable another to come in. I think Michel Salgado might be leaving the club, so they would need a full-back to replace him. They may also need a centre-half if somebody comes in for Christopher Samba.
"David Dunn is the creative player in Blackburn's midfield but, at 32, he is not getting any younger. They might try to sign a midfielder and, like a lot of clubs, they could try to sign a striker.
"The only problem is that, if there are 20 goal-a-season strikers with experience about, bigger clubs usually want them. The club does have a wage structure too and the manager will have to be wary of that when bringing in new players."
Potential targets: Fulham striker Andy Johnson is out of contract in the summer. Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha and Nottingham Forest full-back Chris Gunter have also been associated with the club.
BOLTON - Former striker Nathan Blake "Now the decision seems to have been made to sell Gary Cahill, I think Bolton will be thinking they can use the transfer fee to bring in three or four new players who can freshen it up and bring some confidence to the squad.
"They might have a ready-made replacement for Cahill in David Wheater and now they can try to sign a goalscoring midfielder and a striker. The money they generate for Cahill may bring with it a better chance of survival.
"Bolton must replace Lee Chung-Yong and Stuart Holden - who are both injured - and Johan Elmander and Daniel Sturridge, who have left. They were the heartbeat of the team last season."
Potential targets: New York Red Bulls defender Tim Ream has been training with the club, while Chelsea midfielder Josh McEachran could follow Daniel Sturridge to Bolton on loan. Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha has also been linked.
CHELSEA - Former winger Pat Nevin "With Alex leaving and Gary Cahill set to join Chelsea, I expect a busy January at Stamford Bridge. I think they will go back to do their shopping in Portugal. Andre Villas-Boas knows the market well having coached Porto and there are a lot of Brazilian and Argentinian defenders there who are made for the Premier League.
"Nicolas Anelka is also off and it wouldn't surprise me if one or two of the other established players were to leave this year. Florent Malouda and John Obi Mikel are both out of favour but whether another club is prepared to cough up for the transfer fee and their wages is another issue.
"When it comes to budget with Chelsea, who knows? They spent £50m on Fernando Torres this time last year but they must have one eye on the financial fair play regulations."
Potential targets: With Didier Drogba linked with a move, Porto striker Hulk might be a replacement. Then there is the small target of Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric, but the Croat says he is staying put. Everton midfielder Jack Rodwell has also been mentioned.
EVERTON - Former midfielder Barry Horne "I'm going to be very predictable and say Everton need two strikers - even more blindingly obviously, two strikers who can score goals.
"Boss David Moyes has sold Yakubu and Jermaine Beckford. Yakubu may have scored goals for Blackburn but he wasn't doing it for Everton, while Beckford had qualities that didn't work out. Tim Cahill, only temporarily we hope, has lost his magic touch while Steven Pienaar and Mikel Arteta have been sold.
"Landon Donovan is a good loan signing but it is strikers Everton need. They are the men most in demand and who therefore cost the most. We do not know how much Moyes will have to spend in January, so Everton will have to look for the best available and work backwards in line with their budget."
Potential targets: With Landon Donovan secured on loan, Steven Pienaar could also re-join the club in the same manner. Bristol City forward Nicky Maynard has also been linked.
Fulham - Former defender Rufus Brevett "Fulham need to find someone to score goals and they are not helped by Andy Johnson and Bobby Zamora's contracts coming to an end this summer. They're tight at the back so there's not a problem in that department.
"OK, so they signed forward Bryan Ruiz for more than £10m, but he's still trying to find his feet. Manager Martin Jol has used him sensibly and the Costa Rican has managed to chip in with a couple of goals. He'll be better in the second half of the season."
Potential targets: With striker Bobby Zamora also tipped for a move out of Craven Cottage, a striker could be crucial. Bristol City winger Albert Adomah and Nottingham Forest full-back Chris Gunter are other names in the frame.
LIVERPOOL - Former defender Mark Lawrenson "Liverpool need somebody else to play with, or instead of, Luis Suarez. I don't see any other area in which they look particularly short. We need to see what happens from his eight-game FA ban but they could do with an alternative for him.
"As far as the American owners are concerned, they have said the money is available, especially if there is a player that is going to massively improve the team. Also, if a young player becomes available who has the potential to get better, they are more likely to sign this type of player."
Potential targets: Rangers striker Nikica Jelavic has been written about, but Liverpool will once again keep their business under the radar.
Manchester City - BBC football expert Lee Dixon "City's strength in depth was illustrated recently in the win over Arsenal where they had a problem at left-back and Pablo Zabaleta came in and was one of the game's best players.
"Up front they are fine and the midfield is arguably one of the best attacking outfits in the league. Defensively, maybe they need another centre-back, but you are struggling to find something that needs strengthening.
"I still think they can be got at as a back four in wide areas but I don't think boss Roberto Mancini is going to go out and buy two full-backs."
Potential targets: Athletic Bilbao midfielder Javi Martinez is one name that has been mentioned. Others like Roma's Daniele de Rossi appear tied to their clubs.
Manchester United - Former defender Gary Pallister "I would not be surprised to see manager Sir Alex Ferguson go into the market in the transfer window, because Manchester United have injuries to lots of midfield players. Darren Fletcher is out for most of the season and Anderson and Tom Cleverley are yet to come back.
"It is also true that we haven't got a Paul Scholes-type player, someone who has the vision to unlock teams like David Silva. Wayne Rooney has played in midfield at times but you want him to be up front where he can cause most damage.
"With Javier Hernandez back from injury sooner than expected, we are well covered up front. One thing is for sure, Ferguson won't buy for the sake of it."
Potential targets: Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric would solve their creative midfield problems, but United may have to wait until the summer, so that could point to Lille midfielder Eden Hazard. Newcastle midfielder Cheick Tiote is another potential name in the reckoning.
Newcastle - Former striker Alan Shearer "In January, Demba Ba will be going to the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal and, apart from him, there have not been a lot of goals. That's where I think they might strengthen. Losing Steven Taylor to injury was massive blow, so I would assume that they would be looking for cover at centre-back.
"The good news for Newcastle fans is that the club seem to know the French market very well. Yohan Cabaye has been a great find and it wouldn't surprise me if they dipped into that again."
Potential targets: Montpellier striker Olivier Giroud could feature after Modibo Maiga's potential move feel through. Celtic midfielder Scott Brown has also been linked, but Blackburn's Chris Samba could prove the most tempting buy.
Norwich - Former striker Iwan Roberts "I think Paul Lambert already has some good options in midfield. The club has been linked with Leeds winger Robert Snodgrass, who is a player he has watched a few times, and I wouldn't be surprised if he went in for him.
"Looking at the front men, James Vaughan has been out for the majority of the season, so Paul has been relying quite heavily on Grant Holt and Steve Morison. I think Paul will go for a new striker, although he probably needs a back-up goalkeeper too."
Potential targets: Any move for Leeds midfielder Robert Snodgrass might have been scuppered by an appendix problem, while Nottingham Forest full-back Chris Gunter is also in the frame.
QPR - Former striker Bradley Allen "I think finding the net has been the problem for QPR this season. Forwards DJ Campbell and Jay Bothroyd have suffered from injuries and need to get games under their belts, so manager Neil Warnock has been reliant on Heidar Helguson.
"They need a couple of strikers in the transfer window and perhaps a midfielder who can unlock the door. Most promoted sides have been cautious with their money but not QPR and I think they'll spend again in January."
Potential targets: Warnock says he needs three or four players with two or three of those loan signings. Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha and Rangers striker Nikica Jelavic have been linked.
Stoke - Former goalkeeper Steve Simonsen "Stoke have got a really good squad at the moment but the one area I think they will be looking to strengthen is on the right-hand side of midfield. Jermaine Pennant has been excellent there but seems to have fallen out of favour with manager Tony Pulis and there is not a lot of cover.
"Ryan Shotton has played there a few times and done well but it's not his natural position and Rory Delap is not going to play week in, week out any more - so they need to sign someone.
"Stoke tend to do their shopping late on and, if Tony Pulis identifies his man, he normally gets the backing from the chairman."
Potential targets: Not too much shopping is expected at the Britannia Stadium, and Stoke may just choose to trim their squad.
Sunderland - Former midfielder Gary Bennett "Everyone at the club has been lifted by new manager Martin O'Neill but that doesn't change the fact that Sunderland definitely need a striker, maybe another creative midfield player and another left-back. Since forwards Darren Bent and Asamoah Gyan left, they have not been able to replace them.
"Kieran Richardson has had to fill in at left-back sometimes and, if they can bring another one in, it will release him to play in midfield or off the striker.
"O'Neill will have money to spend. I wouldn't say it's going to be millions - and he might wheel and deal a bit, but I think the priority will be a striker. If you have a winning team, no matter where you are geographically, players will want to play for you."
Potential targets: Fulham striker Bobby Zamora and Rangers striker Nikica Jelavic could help O'Neill's problems up front.
Swansea - Former Wales striker Iwan Roberts "Swansea are a careful, well-run club who won't put themselves into debt. I think manager Brendan Rodgers will sit down with chairman Huw Jenkins and may bring in two or three players but no more than that.
"They will need to strengthen up front. Danny Graham has been superb and Leroy Lita has fits and starts.
"I would not be surprised if Brendan brought in an old head up front. I also think he will strengthen at the back too, bringing in a big dominant centre-half. However, any signings have got to be the right type of players to fit into the type of team Swansea are."
Potential targets: Cliftonville striker Rory Donnelly is set to join the Swans, while Chelsea midfielder Josh McEachran would suit their style of play.

Katibu huyo aliongeza kuwa wameshindwa kumpa timu hiyo kocha wa Taifa Stars, Jan Poulsen, kwa sababu hivi sasa yuko likizo, ingawa ameahidi kuwepo uwanjani siku hiyo kushuhudia mechi inayotarajiwa kuwa ya kuvutia baina ya ndugu hao, Kili Stars na Zanzibar Heroes.

Aliongeza kuwa tayari TFF imeshathibitisha kwa kwa Chama cha Soka cha Zanzibar (ZFA) kwamba itapeleka timu yake katika mechi hiyo maalumu ya ufunguzi wa mashindano ya kila mwaka ya Kombe la Mapinduzi.

Holders Kilimanjaro Stars get down to business as they host eleven-time winners Uganda in the second Tusker Challenge Cup semifinal at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam this evening.

It will be the replica of last year’s semifinal clash of the same tournament, yet at the same venue and same time.

Uganda lost the previous edition’s semifinal and were dethroned the title as their 19-match Challenge Cup unbeaten run came to a shuddering halt.

The two teams are old foes who know each other pretty well since the tournament was inaugurated in 1973.

The Mainland Tanzania (Tanganyika) team had a rough passage into the semifinal as they qualified from the group stage at the skin of their teeth, winning just one match and cashed on best loser’s ticket.

Stars victory over Malawi during the quarterfinal came as surprise to most of the home fans who had already lost hope for their side that stumbled at the preliminaries.

Both teams have conceded defeats at the group stage. While Uganda banks on their football prowess, holders Mainland are buoyed by the support from the home fans.

However, matches are not decided on the number of fans cheering at the stands but rather footwork on the field.

The home team has a huge burden to meet the satisfaction of their fans as Tanganyika celebrates the 50 anniversary of its independence tomorrow.

Winning the semifinal as well as retaining the title is a dream of the home fans, team and even the Government.

However, victory will only be achieved through hard work and beating Uganda, the highest ranked team in the FIFA standings, is certainly a tall order.

If the performance of the teams is judged by their previous performance in the championship, then the holders are really in trouble to cross the semifinal barrier.

Uganda have been sharp in striking, well coordinated midfield as well as water-tight defence.

So far, Uganda have conceded paltry two goals while scoring seven in four matches while their semifinal opponents have conceded three and scored five in as many matches.

Whether it will be a match to be concluded within 90 minutes or extend into extra time it remains to be seen.

Uganda have been vulnerable at the hands of the Mainland team when the game extends into penalty shootouts.

The other side of the coin shows that Mainland Tanzania have been finding it difficult to come from behind once it concedes a goal whenever playing Uganda in the Challenge Cup.

Goals by Mrisho Ngassa and Nurdin Bakari strike gave Taifa Stars a 2-1 away win against Chad on Friday in Ndjamena in a pre world cup qualifier.
Stars took the the lead on 12 minutes through Ngassa who broke the offside trap to score off a Nizar Khalfan cross. Chad equalised three minutes later through free kick by Karim Yaya after Labo Mahamat was fouled by Ngassa who was booked for the offence.

Stars midfielder Nurdin Bakari scored the winning goal for Tanzania eight minutes from time to help tanzania put one foot into the group stages.
Coach Danish Jan Poulsen was delighted with the result, "It was a good win for my side and also good start in this stage, but we have to fight and make sure we finish well in Dar es Salaam on Tuesday. But I'm satisfied with the way they played and that's why I was expecting a positive results."
If Stars qualify they will join group C team which involves Ivory Coast, Gambia and Morocco.

Tanzania national soccer team coach Jan Poulsen yesterday selected a provisional squad of 22 players for an ad hoc camping ahead of the 2014 World Cup preliminary qualifier game against Chad in ten days time.

The first leg match will be played in Djamena on November 11 as Azam’s youngest goalkeeper Mwadini Ali has won the call to join the team.

TP Mazembe’s duo of Thomas Ulimwengu and Mbwana Samata has also won the Stars’ call.

The full line up of players called by the Danish coach and their respective clubs in bracket include Simba’s first choice goalkeeper Juma Kaseja, Juma Nyoso, Juma Jabu and Shomari Kapombe.

Azam players in Poulsen’s line-up besides Mwadini include Aggrey Morris, Erasto Nyoni, Ramadhan Chombo and Mrisho Ngassa.

While Nurdin Bakari, Nadir Haroub and Godfrey Taita are Yanga trio in the team, Mtibwa Sugar has their duo Shabani Nditi and Hussein Javu.

ZFA-TFF merger requires constitutional amendment

Incorporating Zanzibar Football Association officials into the Tanzania Football Federation is a matter that needs a constitutional amendment, so says TFF president Leodegar Tenga.

Tenga released a statement when responding to queries posed by members of the press at the Bwawani Hotel here over the weekend.

He said the issue is sensitive and need time to be worked out before coming into conclusion.

He said it is impossible to co-opt the ZFA officials inside the TFF secretariat until amendments have been done to find a room or their accommodation.

“This is a constitutional affair and needs time before its deliberation”, said Tenga.

The motion to accommodate ZFA officials inside the TFF secretariat has surfaced after the Isles soccer authority nose dived in their bid to secure FIFA membership.

ZFA has been making endless campaigns to win FIFA membership but their last bid collapsed in June when the world supreme body dumped their application.

FIFA trashed ZFA membership for a simple reason that Zanzibar lacks suzerainty soon after the 1964 Union with Tanganyika to form the Republic of Tanzania.

However, Zanzibar has been benefiting from all FIFA donations and proceeds through the TFF.

FIFA donations have been in use by footing expenditures of the national teams, training for coaches and referees from either side of the United Republic of Tanzania.

Tenga reminded fans in Zanzibar that FIFA does not donate hard cash to TFF but rather facilitates special projects of its members.

However, Tenga advised ZFA to establish viable projects that would justify facilitation by FIFA donations.

So far Zanzibar has been benefiting the installation of astral turf at Pemba's Gombani Stadium.

TFF’s secretary general Angetile Osiah, said it’s high time ZFA officials to work had with transparence so that fans and the entire soccer fraternity in the Isles would be aware of its activities and how they benefit from FIFA injections.

So far, every time the national soccer team travels for international assignments such as African Nations Cup qualifiers at least one official from ZFA is included in the contingent.

Currently, ZFA vice-president Haji Ameir is in Morocco with the national team that played their final Nations Cup qualifier game against their hosts yesterday.

Osiah said TF officials have been visiting Zanzibar every now and then as part of improving relations with the Islanders and serve as a joint soccer authority.

TFF had donated some funds to assist in the general election that saw president Ali Ferej Tamim bounce into the leadership held for yet another tenure.

However, even before amendment of the TFF constitution, there is no clause that sidelines any Tanzania of Zanzibar origin not to contest in the general election held every after four years.

The quest for FIFA membership is what drove most of the Zanzibar-based Tanzanians from aspiring leadership posts of the TFF.

Every Tanzanian regardless of his domicile is free from contesting in TFF election.

The following are ten proposals I would like the new National Sports Council (NSC) to work on. Not all Tanzanians are happy with the selection. I would have liked to see more members with direct technical involvement in sports. However we must work to ensure that we provide them cooperation to assist Tanzania to get to the next level internationally in sport.

The NSC should bring back sports competitions in primary and secondary schools (UMITASHUMTA and UMISETA). The contribution of these two boards was the key to bringing success to the national team as that where new talent was discovered.
The NSC need to ensure that the sports associations formed from district to regional level are supported as this will help to bring through leaders from all over the country who will be involved at every level of sport from local up to national levels. By doing this we will have a very strong national association.
Assistance should be provided to sports associations to have some tournaments put back into the sports calendar, for example, the Bonite Cup in Moshi for volleyball. I strongly advise that the NSC gets in contact with Mr Reginald Mengi, the Chairman of IPP group to explore how to bring back this tournament. For me the decline of volleyball in Tanzania started when the Bonite Cup ended.
Provision should be made for national sports associations to be housed under one office with communication access such as telephone lines, internet connection and other office facilities. This will help them to be contactable easily. At present documents are held individually and this is not satisfactory in terms of record keeping and keeping the history of the associations.
Improvements should be made for sports bodies to be able to work more closely between the mainland and Zanzibar so that both sides can work closely together in building up talent and competing nationally, regionally and internationally.
The NSC should outline good governance guidelines for sports associations to follow in order to avoid unnecessary conflicts and disputes and reduce the NSC having to play a role like a court of law and having to spend time with appeals.
Preparation for the teams playing at national level should be done professionally allowing good planning around areas such as coaching, dieting, sports medical treatment, psychological support. This can be done by using our own expertise from the Faculty of Physical Education at the University of Dar es Salaam and other educational institutions in Tanzania.
The NSC should advise the Government to create a link between investors coming to Tanzania to contribute towards sports either by donating part of their revenue to sports structures e.g after 50 years of independence we do not have a swimming pool constructed to international standard (50 x 25 m). This weakens the swimming association as there are no facilities of international standard where swimmers can properly practice.
The NSC should assess regularly the leadership of associations to ensure good performance, particularly where the same leaders have been in place a long time or where the association is dormant.
Finally, a website should be set up to enable all sports associations to communicate easily and act as a forum for collection of ideas and suggestions on how to develop the association. This includes allowing ideas to come from other countries which could be adapted for Tanzania. For example, in the UK there are cardiovascular exercise machines fixed in open spaces (which are immovable). These allow ordinary people who are jogging or walking in the park to use the machines and build up fitness levels for free. This could be done in Tanzania with the support from companies such as Vodafone, Tigo, TBL, Serengeti Breweries etc.

These are my ideas and contributions towards sports development. Young people will be looking to the NSC to assist them by identifying their talent, developing and exposing it. Maybe one day we will have our own sports icon who can set example for the youth.

Baraza jipya la Michezo la Taifa

SERIKALI imetangaza Wajumbe wa Baraza la Michezo la Taifa (BMT) ambalo ni chombo cha juu cha kuratibu masuala ya michezo nchini.

Uteuzi huo unafanyika wakati Tanzania inaadhimisha miaka 50 tangu kupata uhuru mwaka 1961 ikiwa imewahi kung’ara kimataifa kwa mchezo wa riadha hususan miaka ya 70 ambapo wanariadha kadhaa walifanikiwa kupata medali za dhahabu.

Aidha Serikali inateua wajumbe wakati timu nyingi zilizoshiriki michuano ya kimataifa kwa miaka 50 iliyopita zikiwa zikiambulia vipigo.
Wajumbe wa baraza hilo sasa ni pamoja na Mwenyekiti wake Dionis Malinzi ambaye alikuwa Mwenyekiti wa Chama cha Gofu Tanzania (TGU) na mfanyabiashara.
Wajumbe wengine ni wajumbe ni Jenister Mhagama ambaye ni mbunge wa Jimbo la Peramiho na mmoja wa viongozi wa michezo katika Bunge la Tanzania.
Mjumbe mwingine kutoka Bunge hilo ni Mkiwa Kimwanga ambaye ni wa Viti maalumu wa Chama cha CUF ambacho kinashirikiana na Serikali ya Mapinduzi Zanzibar na Chama cha Mapinduzi kwenye utawala wa Zanzibar.
Wengine ni Jamal Rwambow ambaye ni polisi mwandamizi Dar es Salaam, Venance Mwamoto ambaye aliwahi kuwa Mbunge wa Kilolo na pia mchezaji wa soka, Juma Pinto ambaye ni Katibu mkuu wa chama cha waandishi wa habari za michezo(Taswa) na Mkurugenzi wa gazeti la Jambo Leo.
Wengine ni Dk Cyprian Maro, Kanali Eliot Makafu, Jeniffer Mmasi, Ramadhan Dau ambaye ni Mkurugenzi Mkuu wa Mfuko wa Hifadhi ya Jamii (NSSF), Alex Mgongolwa ambaye ni wakili pamoja na Maulid Kitenge ambaye ni mtangazaji wa Kituo cha Radio One na Kituo cha Televisheni cha ITV.
Wajumbe wengine ambao ni wajumbe kwa nyadhifa zao ni Mkurugenzi Bodi ya Michezo ya Kubahatisha, Kamishna wa Elimu katika Wizara ya Elimu na Mafunzo ya Ufundi, Mwakilishi Ofisi ya Waziri Mkuu (Tamisemi), Mkurugenzi wa Michezo kutoka Wizara ya Habari, Vijana , Utamaduni na michezo na Mwakilishi kutoka ofisi ya Mwanasheria Mkuu wa Serikali.
Kwa ujumla Baraza hilo ni chombo kikubwa ambacho kinatakiwa kuwa na wajumbe wanayoielewa vema michezo nchini.
Mbali ya kuielewe pia ipo haja ya kuwa na wajumbe waliobobea kwa kushiriki na kuipatia sida timu yoyote waliyoshiriki ama Tanzania kwa ujumla.
Dunia ina aina nyingi za michezo na Tanzania hali kadhalika ina michezo ya aina nyingi.
Tanzania kwa miaka mingi imekuwa ikishiriki michezo mbalimbali ya kimataifa, lakini asilimia 99 timu zinazoshiriki zinarudi mikono mitupu.
Hivyo uteuzi wa wajumbe hao umeanza kuibua hoja za je walioteuliwa watasaidia kuimarisha michezo nchini?
Baadhi ya wadau wa michezo jijini Dar es Salaam wanahoji vigezo vilivyotumika kuwateua huku wakisema baadhi yao hawana sifa hata za kuongoza michezo katika ngazi ya kata.
“Walioteuliwa wengi ni wapenzi wa soka kuliko michezo mingine mingi, je kweli watasaidia maendeleo ya michezo Tanzania?”, anahoji mwanamichezo kutoka wilaya ya Kinondoni Dar es Salaam.
Wanadai michezo nchini ipo ya aina nyingi tofauti ya baadhi ya wajumbe wanavyoujua mpira wa miguu peke yake.
Wadau wanasisitiza kwamba Tanzania ina michezo mingi na ndio maana wameunda vyama vingi vya michezo na mashirikisho ya vyama hivyo nayo mengi pia.
Lakini Mwenyekiti wa BMT Dionis Malinzi aliwaambia waandishi wa habari kwamba vyama vingine ni vya mfukoni na kwamba vikae chonjo kufutwa.
Wapenzi wa michezo pia wanatilia shaka utendaji wa baraza hilo kwani wanasema ofisi zake zilizopo karibu na Uwanja wa Uhuru ni chafu mithili ya magofu.
Wanatilia shaka pia uteuzi wa Mkurugenzi Mkuu wa NSSF, Dk Dau anayefanya kazi kwenye jengo refu kuliko yote nchini Tanzania kwamba unalenga kumwomba ufadhili zaidi badala ya kusaka maendeleo ya michezo Tanzania.
Lakini baadhi ya wajumbe walisisitiza kwamba watafanya kazi zao kwa kufuata sheria taratibu na kanuni za miochezo nchini.
Wanasema watavitambua vyama vyote na mashirikisho yake na kuendeleza michezo bila kupendelea aina moja ya mchezo.
Swali ni je, medali za dhahabu zitaonekana nchini au Tanzania itaendelea kuwa kichwa cha mwenda wazimu?

Emmanuel Okwi’s 34th minute goal was enough to silence visiting Mtibwa Sugar in an eighth round match of the Mainland premiership played at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam yesterday.

Okwi combined well with Shomari Kapombe upfront as samba sealed off the winner during the first half.

Simba would have increased the tally to two deep into stoppage time when they secured a penalty. Substitute Haruna Moshi was blatantly fouled inside the penalty box and when defender Victor Costa stepped in to shoot it was expertly saved by goalkeeper Deogratious Munishi for an abortive corner.

The win has elevated Simba to hit an 18-point ceiling while underlining their supremacy over the Morogoro sugar processors in the premiership series.

Mtibwa Sugar played a composed game but never looked as side to trouble the host team particularly during the second half.

Simba deployed all barrels ablaze with Ulimboka Mwakingwe as constant menace upfront but he was a victim of offside traps.

Mtibwa Sugar has Hussein Javu upfront and midfielder Shaaban Nditi but failed to contain Simba players.

In another premiership tie played at the Kaitaba Stadium hosts Kagera Sugar posted their maiden league victory as they floored visiting Police Dodoma by 2-0 goals.
