On his eighth Criss Cross leader date, Wycliffe Gordon distills his exhaustive knowledge of the oeuvre of Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn on a well crafted, ten-piece program spanning a timeline from 1927 (Creole Love Call) to 1967 (The Intimacy Of The Blues). Throughout the proceedings, which explore a broad array of flavors, Gordon – spurred by a killer rhythm section of pianist Aaron Diehl, bassist Yasushi Nakamura, and drummer Alvin Atkinson – plays with characteristic effervescence and tonal creativity, matched by Adrian Cunningham on saxophones and woodwinds and, on several selections, the soulful violin virtuoso Zach Brock and vocalist Dee Daniels.”

On the Road Again

Wycliffe’s tour schedule has been busier than ever this year starting in Atlanta as a featured performer at the JEN conference, performing on the Jazz Cruise as Gospel show director, performing concerts in OK, NY, NJ, CA, TX, AZ, UT, LA, WA and Portugal, and completing residencies with Juilliard and the Louis Armstrong Legacy Project in Chicago. In addition, Wycliffe returned to the Savannah Music Festival (the only artist to have been there every year since it started), he performed his commissioned score for silent film “Within Our Gates” with live jazz orchestra at Symphony Space, premiered his latest released “Essentially Ellington” at Dizzy’s for a week long run, and he was featured with the Detroit Symphony under the direction of Jeff Tyzik. Wycliffe’s not only busy touring and performing as a leader, but he stays in constant demand as a featured guest artist on many projects with other jazz artists. He recently completed Cds with NEA Jazz master Jimmy Owens on The Monk Project; was featured with the Clayton Brothers on their recent release “The Gathering”, and just wrapped up in the studio with jazz vocalist Rene Marie on her new album available in the fall.

Wycliffe Gordon Named 2012 Trombonist of the Year

Once again, Wycliffe Gordon has won the Trombonist of the Year Award presented by Jazz Journalists Association. The Gala event took place Wednesday, June 20 at The Blue Note in Manhattan, and honored the top jazz musicians and supporters of jazz from all over the world.

Beyond the Blackberry Patch

Wycliffe Gordon has been commissioned by the Jazz Arts Group to create a 90-minute piece of music for ten musicians to tell the story of the King-Lincoln District. Eight Columbus City Schools in the district were invited to participate by helping Mr. Gordon with his research. Their study of their own neighborhood, its past, present, and future, has resulted in the working title for the piece—Beyond the Blackberry Patch.
