Beyond the Blackberry Patch

Wycliffe Gordon has been commissioned by the Jazz Arts Group to create a 90-minute piece of music for ten musicians to tell the story of the King-Lincoln District. Eight Columbus City Schools in the district were invited to participate by helping Mr. Gordon with his research. Their study of their own neighborhood, its past, present, and future, has resulted in the working title for the piece—Beyond the Blackberry Patch.

Premiere of “Within Our Gates” commission huge success!

“Within Our Gates” a silent race film by Oscar Micheaux and the oldest known film in existence by an African-American, was brought to life again August 26 at the Miller Theater in the world premiere of a new original score by composer, conductor and trombonist Wycliffe Gordon. The packed house leapt to their feet in thunderous applause and appreciation for Wycliffe.

JJA 2011 Trombonist of the Year

The Jazz Journalists Association have honored Wycliffe Gordon with the “Trombonist of the Year” Award for his talent and contributions as a jazz musician within the field. This marks the sixth award given to Wycliffe, having previously been named Trombonist of the Year in years 2001, 2002, 2006, 2007, 2008 and now 2011.
