Is There a 'Submit' Button?

My best friend, Dwayne Forehand, had a conversation about biblical submission this weekend with an old friend of mine. She has always had a hard time with the concept, but Dwayne seemed to be listening and following the Holy Ghost and said that submission isn't where we as men need to focus, it's on leading. This made sense to her. She sent him a note thanking him for his response, saying "I appreciated what you had to say about submission... I don't know, I just thought it was real and humble."

Anyway, he and I were talking, and I made the joke that 'submit' is the button you click to give your idea to the developers. This got my brain spinning, and I started to think of other ways that we use the word submit. Like a writer who has to submit his article or book to the publisher, they are coming under authority of that publisher. If, then, the publisher doesn't want to print it, or wants the writer to change it, that's their prerogative and therefore, as his job, the writer needs to follow his bosses orders.

Now, that led me down a different path. The one of the boss. His job is to lead those under him to do their jobs, and do them well. If he's a jerk, then when he throws the article back on the desk and says "Start over" the writer might have a hard time, since now, his fear is his bosses reaction to another poorly written article. If the boss is not a difficult man, but is caring, gracious, and still effective, when he hands the article back to the writer asking for a re-write, that seems to make for an easier time where the author can work.

How does this tie back into my role as a husband? If I am focused on loving my wife, encouraging her where she needs it, gently rebuking her when necessary, and walking along side of her, instead of sitting behind my desk, fat cigar in my mouth, then our marriage will be more like the picture of Jesus and the Church.

Anyway, what are your thoughts?

Stages of Renewal

Pastor Mark's post called Worship: God Transforms is quite refreshing. Our team just went through the stages of renewal in one of our meetings which challenged me to focus on my personal renewal and my relational renewal. I've included the section we focused on for your reading enjoyment.

Stages of Renewal

Personal renewal (love God) – simply everything begins with a renewed passion for Jesus as our greatest treasure and object of worship. Personal renewal occurs as we take time each day for mini-Sabbaths to do such things as pray, read Scripture, and connect with Jesus as well as taking a Sabbath day every week, day or days out of town unplugged from technology to renew every month, and take non-working and spiritually renewing vacation every year. The key for personal renewal is to unplug from all that drains us to plug into Jesus who renews us to be and do what he asks of us in all of life by his strength. Personal renewal does not fix everything in our life, but it sets our hearts and minds aflame with hope to press forward in life.

Relational renewal (love others) – once we have personal renewal with Jesus the first effect is that we have new hope for people and pursue them in love. If married, relational renewal begins with our spouse. And, if we are parents our children ensue. Relational renewal allows us to be authentic around others, stop pretending and performing, and simply be in loving community where we are known and know others thanks to the work of Jesus gospel.

Missional renewal (love the mission) – once we have personal and relational renewal, the result is that God’s people want to be on mission together doing what God commands of the church. Without personal renewal, a church cannot have relational renewal. And, without both a church has no life or unity that allows them to press forward on mission with God together.

Church renewal (love the brothers and sisters) – the fruit of personal, relational, and missional renewal is that a church that has a new culture of grace internally and new passion for lost people externally. In a church this results in people trusting their leaders and one another more, wanting to spend more time together, hanging out longer after services, and singing together more loudly as they see themselves as a unified community.

Structural renewal – once the personal, relational, missional, and church renewals have been established so much has changed in how a church operates and people interact that new structures must be built so as to accommodate God’s renewing work. This includes new policies, procedures, and ways of managing the affairs of the church so as to enable further renewal.

Institutional renewal – institutions (e.g. denominations, seminaries, publishers, record companies, conferences, etc.) are always the last places of renewal because they function to preserve and sustain the renewal of a previous move of God. Subsequently, they become the equivalent of a trunk on a tree while new growth happens out on the ends of the newest limbs.

Have I said how much I love my job? I just got this question; "SUBJECT: Please Don't Laugh; Since you're the FAQ, I thought I'd ask you my question, which I DID NOT want to post in FAQ. :)

What would be the most appropriate way (if there is one) to ask MH members about reputable body piercing salons. I totally won't be offended if you say there isn't an appropriate way.

Till There Was You is a song that Heidi has always loved and sings to the girls every night.

Halfway Down the Stairs is a song that I grew up with and knew my whole life that it was one I'd sing to my kids, I also put it on the first mix I made for Heidi a few days after we met. It's kind of obscure, but certainly worth learning for your kids.

Yuma, AZ is one that I first heard in college and thought it'd make a good lullaby. Eve calls it the "dancing with grandpa song."

Girl is one of Heidi's. It's just another song she loves.

Dance Hall Places started out as a ringtone I made for Heidi's phone that Evelyn started asking for.

I've always felt that (They Long to Be) Close to You sounds like a song that should have come from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. But, it's one of Heidi's favorite songs to sing to the girls.

I was in The Sound of Music in High School and had to learn Edelweiss and it just sort of stuck around.

When my sister and I were real little, my parents put a tape recorder next to the mono-speaker for our TV when Marry Poppins was on and recorded Stay Awake. We wore that tape out. I think the RIAA might not like that my parents did this, but the evidence has vanished.

What's there to say about Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star?

Eve loves singing all the songs from Mars Hill. My Jesus I Love Thee was chosen for this mix due to it being one of the mellowest songs we have from church.

It is next to impossible to find a decent version of Jesus Loves Me. I've never actually heard of Bobby Pinson until tonight, but his version is pretty good. Someone out there have a Johnny Cash or Willie Nelson version?

Heidi always closes her lullaby set with Be Thou My Vision, and Pedro the Lion is pretty relaxing, so it works. I fell asleep listening to him tune up once at TOM Fest.

At some point I'll make a muxtape of this album. But I need to convert some of the files as a few are protected and some are just in the wrong format. There are also a few songs that didn't make the cut. Maybe I'll make a b-sides some day.

But, I'm interested to know what you sing (or will) to your kids. Have you made a mix for them?

Joss Whedon, the guy behind Firefly is the mad genius behind the whole thing and has this to say;

Once upon a time, all the writers in the forest got very mad with the Forest Kings and declared a work-stoppage. The forest creatures were all sad; the mushrooms did not dance, the elderberries gave no juice for the festival wines, and the Teamsters were kinda pissed. (They were very polite about it, though.) During this work-stoppage, many writers tried to form partnerships for outside funding to create new work that circumvented the Forest King system.

Frustrated with the lack of movement on that front, I finally decided to do something very ambitious, very exciting, very mid-life-crisisy. Aided only by everyone I had worked with, was related to or had ever met, I single-handedly created this unique little epic. A supervillain musical, of which, as we all know, there are far too few.

The idea was to make it on the fly, on the cheap – but to make it. To turn out a really thrilling, professionalish piece of entertainment specifically for the internet. To show how much could be done with very little. To show the world there is another way. To give the public (and in particular you guys) something for all your support and patience. And to make a lot of silly jokes. Actually, that sentence probably should have come first.

He will post the first installment on July 15th, the second on the 17th, and the third and last on the 19th. Then on the 20th at midnight "they will vanish into the night, like a phantom (but not THE Phantom – that’s still playing. Like, everywhere.)"

Over at Doxologist Pastor Tim is talking about the last few weeks being toned down when it comes to the musical, corporate worship at Mars Hill Church | Ballard. Then, this last Sunday at some of the evening services, Joel Brown and Red Letter decided to bring Lacrea and Tedashi from Reach Records on to the stage to lead a very white church in corporate worship.

Pastor Tim goes on to say;

I praise God to be at a church where I have the trust and freedom to follow my convictions, go with the Ghost and try new ideas. At the end of the day I think the only way to keep musical style from becoming an idol is to mix it up as much as possible. You can’t change it up so much that your people can’t even follow you but a good rotation of musical styles and dialects keeps folks on their toes. It emphasizes that music is just one of of a “thousand tongues” with which we can declare the glory of Jesus Christ.

I had another idea for a good playlist in iTunes (it'd be too big for muxtape.com). It's a list of 50 or so songs that all have to do with States. Each state needs to be represented at least once, but more is fine, too.

I have a good list going right now, with 39 songs. But I seem to be missing a lot of states.

Is there a song on here that shouldn't be because it's too obvious or not really about a state? Have I missed your state? Do you know of a good song that I can replace or add? Give it to me.
