2. Poll: Obama Would Beat Romney

Mitt Romney may have won Nevada, but the brutal primary campaign appears to be taking a toll on his national support. A poll by The Washington Post and ABC News finds the Republican frontrunner clearly losing to President Obama for the first time. Obama's approval rating came in at 50 percent—the highest since the killing of Osama bin Laden—and he is beating Romney 52 percent to 43 percent in a general-election matchup. Voters said they disapprove of things the GOP primary candidates have said during the race, and by more than 2 to 1, voters said that the more they learned about Romney, the less they like him. As Romney suffers from the primary fight, Obama is benefiting from increasingly good jobs numbers. Even worse for Romney, the poll found that the two are evenly matched in voters' minds when it comes to job creation.

3. Giants Beat Patriots in Super Bowl

Looks as though Tom Brady and the New England Patriots won't be getting rid of their demons anytime soon. The New York Giants won the Super Bowl Sunday, defeating New England 21-17. The game went down to the last play, with Brady hurling a hail mary to the endzone as time expired, deflecting off a few players, and landing just inches away from a Patriots receiver. With about a minute left, the Giants down by 2, the team failed to successfully run down the clock so that the Patriots would have no time, instead stumbling into a touchdown. It's the Giants' Eli Manning's second championship.

4. Syria Shells Restive City

Syria is spiraling further into violence after a U.N. resolution criticizing President Bashar al-Assad’s regime failed to pass. The shelling of Homs has resumed with a vengeance, killing at least 50 people so far, according to activists. Rebels say a hospital is being targeted and that the assault is one of the largest in the 11-month uprising. Syria’s biggest opposition group said Russia and China, the two nations that vetoed the resolution, are “responsible for the escalating acts of killing.” Russia and China claimed that supporting the resolution would have amounted to taking sides in a civil war. On Sunday, Hillary Clinton called the veto a “travesty.”

5. U.S. Drones Target Funerals: Report

A report by the London-based Bureau of Investigative Journalism may undercut President Obama’s claim that U.S. drones haven’t caused many civilian casualties. According to the bureau, the U.S. has repeatedly targeted rescuers who responded to the scene of a drone strike, as well as mourners at funerals. It found that at least 50 civilians have been killed in the follow-up strikes and another 20 at funerals. The report is based on interviews with witnesses in Pakistan’s tribal area, and American officials have questioned its accuracy.

In a blend of data and storytelling, Jeremy Mendes and Leanne Allison dig into surveillance logs generated by a monitored grizzly bear between 2001 and 2009. The final work is a moving interactive documentary, Bear 71.

She lived her life under near-constant surveillance and was continually stressed by interactions with the human world. She was tracked and logged as data, reflecting the way we have come to see the world around us through Tron and Matrix-like filters, qualifying and quantifying everything, rather than experiencing and interacting.

Leanne Allison sifted through thousands of photos from motion-triggered trail cameras for this project. The grainy images gathered over the past 10 years by various scientists reveal the hidden life of the forest, played out by the animals and humans — including Bear 71 — captured covertly on film.

It begins with the capture of a grizzly, its tagging, and then release, as a first-person narrative tells a story through the eyes of the bear. You, the observer, are allowed to follow the bear and explore its environment on an abstract map, and somewhere along the way digital and the physical world melt together.

Marijuana collective worker says pot gave him his life back

SOQUEL, Calif. -- Boulder Creek Collective founder Marc Whitehill, a former nurse, has seen a lot of people come through his doors seeking medical marijuana, enough that he thinks he has a pretty clear idea of the patient demographic at most local dispensaries.

He estimates 60 percent are 40 or older and use cannabis "to avoid taking much harsher pharmaceutical alternatives to treat nausea, sleeplessness, anxiety and aches and pains," he said. They use the medicine instead of resorting to common prescription painkillers and tranquilizers.

Another 20 percent are youngsters with no visible signs of illness.

"With them, I have to trust the physician that they made the right call," he said.

But the last category, the 20 percent who are chronically or terminally ill receive special attention at the Boulder Creek Collective. If not for these patients, medical cannabis might not have grown into a burgeoning industry.

One such patient is Gary Goldsworthy, 42, who was given a free membership at the collective in exchange for volunteer hours about two years ago. Goldsworthy was diagnosed with Crohn's disease, an inflammatory bowel disorder that triggers the immune system to attack the gastro-intestinal tract, when he was 27.

During a long period of remission, Goldsworthy had been a successful musician who toured nationally with acclaimed blues artist James Armstrong. But an additional diagnosis of skin cancer and the removal of several lymph nodes a few years ago caused a resurgence of the Crohn's and sent him downhill fast.

When he first discovered marijuana as medicine, he had been housebound for more than a year, confined to his bed and the bathroom, hardly able to eat and suffering from diarrhea and intense abdominal pain, among other symptoms.

"I kept on getting advised by nurses to try (marijuana) because I don't get a natural appetite," he said, explaining that smoking has allowed him to regain some semblance of his former life, bringing him out of the house and allowing him to eat regularly and have more energy.

Against the advice of his doctors, Goldsworthy eventually decided to forgo the mainstream treatments that cost $50,000 a year, in favor of marijuana which he got for free, and which he thought did a better job addressing his symptoms.

"My symptoms are semi-manageable now," he said. "I was on disability and SSI but I've been able to be self-sufficient."

Goldsworthy now works as a part-time paid employee at the collective handling admissions. He continues to receive enough free medicine to smoke three to four times a day, around meal times.

How to be smart about Valentine's Day treats

Along with flowers and jewelry, sugar is a go-to gift for Valentine's Day. Whether you're giving candy to a sweetheart or indulging your own sweet tooth, follow these tips from registered dietitian Karen Ansel, a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics:

Steer toward chocolate. The cocoa in chocolate contains heart-healthy antioxidants called flavonols that help lower blood pressure and relax blood vessels. Popular alternatives such as Sweet Tarts, Red Hots and gummy candies, on the other hand, are like eating pure sugar with no benefits.

Go dark ... Skip milk chocolate and pick the darkest chocolate possible to get more flavonols. Bars with a higher percent of cocoa in their ingredient lists generally are the best; many brands have about 50 percent, but some offer more than 80 percent.

... and nutty. Along with dark chocolate, treats that contain nuts tend to deliver the biggest benefits where heart health is concerned. Avoid chocolates filled with creams, which are high in fat, or with "fruit" fillings that likely don't feature any real fruit -- just extra sugar.

Control portions. Stick to one or two pieces of chocolate, max, and pay attention to serving sizes on larger bars. "Just because chocolate is good for you doesn't mean you can go hog wild, because the fat and calories still add up," Ansel warns.

Combine chocolate and fruit. For treats that are good for your heart and better for your waistline, melt dark chocolate and drizzle it over strawberries, pineapple, kiwis or another favorite fruit. You'll get an extra dose of antioxidants.

Q: We're trying to make a nice home office for our son who is moving back home until he can find another job. His father thinks we should move in some of the furniture that's been in storage, like a small sofa and some lamp tables. They're looking a little shabby to me. I don't want our son to feel any worse than he does about having to live with us. Do you have any ideas that don't cost much?

A: Applause for both your sense and your sensibilities. There are easy solutions that will help take the edge off your son's shame. He's hardly alone, you know. This murky economy has mired many new careers, leaving more than 14 million "boomerang" kids to move back home across the U.S.

Your kindness and your husband's tolerance (am I reading this correctly?) need not cost a lot. Vintage furniture perks up instantly -- and inexpensively --with new slipcovers and/or a new coat of paint.

Everyday Cheapskate: The Good, Bad and Really Ugly of Debt

All debt falls into one of three categories: reasonable, toxic and neutral.

Reasonable, or good, debt is the result of borrowing money to buy something that has a high likelihood of increasing in value, and in so doing will increase your net worth.

Buying a home with a low-risk mortgage would be an example of reasonable debt because as the debt is repaid and the home appreciates in value, your net worth will increase proportionately. That is financially reasonable, without imposing an unreasonable financial risk for you, the borrower. A reasonably small amount of student loan debt can also come under the umbrella of good or reasonable debt, provided it meets certain criteria (as described below), because you have a reasonable likelihood of getting a better-paying job after you graduate than the job you would've had without the education.

Toxic debt is exactly as the name implies: dangerous and financially life-threatening. Toxic debt includes credit-card debt, payday loans and other high- or variable-rate borrowing. Toxic debt is deadly and should be avoided entirely. Toxic debt is not secured by collateral, and the interest rates are typically so huge they could choke a horse. If you have toxic debt, it needs to be paid off quickly and then avoided in the future by every means possible. I cannot state this too strongly: Toxic debt is hazardous to your wealth.

Neutral debt includes all other borrowing that is neither good because it's not going to increase wealth in any way nor bad because it's not exactly toxic.

With these definitions in mind, let's look at Rule 7: Borrow Only What You Know You Can Repay from "7 Money Rules for Life" (excerpted with permission from Revell Publishing).

The following safe borrowing guidelines apply to all forms of borrowing -- all forms of debt.

1. Borrow the least you can get by with to achieve your intended result, not the most that the lender will approve. Never let a lender determine how much you should borrow. Mortgage lenders will try to nudge you into the "most house you can qualify for," not the house you can afford.

2. Repay debt quickly, rather than stretching it out as far as possible. Opt for the largest payment you can handle, not the smallest the lender will approve. Auto lenders, as one example, will try to steer you into a long-term loan of 60 to 72 months, pointing out that your payment will be smaller. This is great for them because dragging it out over a longer period of time with smaller monthly payments means you'll be paying a lot more interest over the term of the loan. That adds up to a big payout for the lender, but that's a lousy deal for you.

3. Have an escape plan. You need to have a plan in mind to pay off the debt early in the event life takes an unexpected turn, either by selling the collateral or paying the debt with other resources or assets.

WASHINGTON -- The computer hacking group Anonymous took gleeful pride Friday in announcing that it had sneaked onto a conference call between the Federal Bureau of Investigation and foreign law enforcement agencies concerning how to deal with the cyber-pirate organization.

To boost its claim, the group posted a 16-minute recording of the conference call in which intelligence was shared about two British teenagers allegedly tied to Anonymous. But at FBI headquarters in Washington, officials brushed off the incident, saying that while a "criminal investigation is under way" into how the conference call was compromised, the episode was not a major incident in the annals of cyber-stealth. They insisted that nothing was jeopardized.

"In the big scheme of things, how do these people fit into cyber-crime?" said one FBI official. "It's pretty low level. These guys are not that sophisticated."

In the past, Anonymous has claimed some big-name scores. It revealed email addresses and other personable tidbits about former Vice President Dan Quayle, former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and numerous other U.S. intelligence, law enforcement and military officials.

In January, Anonymous said it briefly shut down parts of the Justice Department website and attacked sites of some entertainment companies because criminal charges had been brought against the founders of Megaupload for transferring music and movies onto the Internet.

But to get inside the FBI tent by eavesdropping on the conference call hit closer to home.

"The FBI might be curious how we're able to continuously read their internal comms for some time now," Anonymous taunted on Twitter.

The FBI said "they got access into a system, not ours, because someone overseas in foreign law enforcement forwarded a working email into a private account. That's how the compromise was made.

"They got instructions, unfortunately, for the time and date of the call and listened and recorded it."

In London, Scotland Yard said it was carrying out its own "full assessment" of the incident, adding that "at this stage, no operational risks" were jeopardized.

The two British teenagers mentioned in the recording had been arrested in the United Kingdom and publicly identified by authorities as Ryan Cleary and Jake Davis. They were allowed to return home after being arrested, according to the FBI in Washington.

One of them, an FBI official said, was told "to stay close to Mom and stay away from computers."

Pew report looks at what Facebook users get out of it

LOS ANGELES -- The Pew Research Center released a report about Facebook on Friday, providing insights into the company that you won't find in its IPO filing.

Rather than focusing on the company's financials, the report, "Why Most Facebook Users Get More Than They Give," sheds light on how Facebook's 845 million users engage with Facebook and what they get out of it.

The findings by the Pew Internet and American Life Project show that social interactions on Facebook closely mirror social interactions in the real world.

For example, over the course of a month, researchers found that women made an average of 11 updates to their Facebook status, while men averaged six. Also, women were more likely to comment on other people's status updates than men were.

"There was a general trend in our data that women use Facebook more than men," said Keith Hampton, a professor at Rutgers and lead author of the report. "This is a phenomenon that is not unique to Facebook. Women are traditionally in charge of social relationships off-line, and that seems to be true of the online world as well."

The report says men are more likely to send friend requests and women are more likely to receive them. That's something else we see in the real world -- especially in bars.

The report also says that most people who use Facebook get more out of it than they put into it, which may explain why they keep coming back.

Researchers found that 40 percent of Facebook users in a sample group made a friend request, while 63 percent received at least one friend request. They found that 12 percent of the sample tagged a friend in a photo, but 35 percent were themselves tagged in a photo. And each user in the sample clicked the "like" button next to a friend's content an average of 14 times but had his or her own content "liked" an average of 20 times.

Why the imbalance?

"There is this 20 percent to 30 percent who are extremely active who are giving more than they are getting, and they are so active they are making up for feeding everyone extra stuff," Hampton said. "You might go on Facebook and post something and have time to click 'like' on one thing you see in your news feed, but then you get a whole bunch of 'likes' on your news feed. That's because of this very active group."

He also said extremely active users tend to have a niche: Some are prolific in adding friends; others in tagging photos. Still others frequently click the "like" button. Rarely is any one user extreme in all those ways.

Psychologists debate social media role in suicide interventions

CHICAGO -- In her sophomore year at Lake Forest College, Sam Sekulich had reached a breaking point. On top of the pressure she felt from classes and student clubs, she was fighting with her parents and not consistently taking medication for her bipolar disorder. Feeling anxious and overwhelmed, she went to the one place where someone is always listening: Facebook.

She posted that she hated life and wished maybe she could just "give up on it."

The help poured in. Friends commented on her post, asking if she was OK. A faculty member at her college checked on her through email. A good friend sent her a text and then visited her in her dorm room later that day.

Sekulich didn't think anybody would pay much attention to her post. But now, healthy and free of that despair, she said deep down, she was really asking for help.

"I wasn't going to do anything about it. I wasn't suicidal ... but I was getting to that point," said Sekulich, now a junior at the college.

As Internet users increasingly chronicle their emotional ups and downs on social networking sites, psychologists said interventions like Sekulich's show the Internet's potential to prevent a mental health crisis. But in this emerging social landscape, mental health professionals, universities and schools are facing new questions about how the Internet should be used to help emotionally suffering individuals.

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline announced in December a revamped partnership with Facebook. Under the suicide prevention program, users are encouraged to report to Facebook when their "friends" write a post that indicates he or she is potentially suicidal. The original poster is then sent an email with a number to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and a link directing the user to an online chat with a crisis worker.

The nonprofit is hoping to reach two overlapping groups: the potentially suicidal and Facebook users. More than 34,000 people in the United States commit suicide and more than 376,000 people are treated in hospitals for self-inflicted injuries each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And nearly four out of five active Internet users visit social media sites and blogs, according to a 2011 report by the Nielsen Co.

The American Psychological Association and the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards have also commissioned a joint task force in 2010 to draft new ethical guidelines for psychologists about how and when they should use electronic forms of communication in their professional lives. The task force aims to finish the guidelines by the end of this year.

The thorny ethical questions now facing mental health professionals and schools run the gamut; Should a teacher accept a Facebook friend request from a student? Could sending a client an email violate his or her confidentiality? Is it OK to Google a potential client before they come in for a consultation?

"I think there was a time psychologists didn't want to be involved in all of that," said Terrence Koller, the executive director of the Illinois Psychological Association. "You're talking to people all day long ... the idea that there are more ways to communicate was kind of overwhelming."

As schools strive to balance the need to protect individuals' privacy and the need to keep students safe, some experts said it's likely that schools will have to clarify how their staff handles electronic communication when responding to students in distress.

"Particularly in K-12 settings, there must be conversation about this," said Steve Jones a communications professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Last school year, 27 percent of the 1,752 calls placed to Chicago Public Schools' crisis center were for concerns that a student could be suicidal, according to the office of communications.

Chicago Public Schools policy says teachers, administrators, and crisis center workers should investigate and look at social networking sites if it's in the interest of protecting students or the educational process. However, faculty members are not permitted to accept a friend request from a student.

"One potential downside to that prohibition is that you would potentially miss an opportunity to intervene," Jones said.

And while the Internet might be an easy way to stumble across an emotional rant, some psychologists worry that social media make it hard to distinguish the real mental health threats from the false alarms.

"You get a lot of false positives," Kaplan said. "The Internet is kind of a clumsy tool. It's not going to help make those fine distinctions."

Elyse Doll, the president of a student suicide prevention organization at the Illinois Institute of Technology, said she learned this distinction first hand. Halfway through her freshmen year, her year-and-a-half-long relationship with her boyfriend ended. Feeling depressed and "angsty," she posted her thoughts on Facebook.

Soon after though, her friends told her to tone her posts down, arguing that Facebook just wasn't the place to sort out her feelings about her break-up.

"I listened to them, I scaled down," she said. "I wasn't attempting to seek attention."

"The problem with social media is that it's an instantaneous thing," said Doll. "You can immediately post something and get the emotional response, and it may not be something you have been feeling for months."

While schools are considered gatekeepers for student mental health, mental health professionals say friends and acquaintances are often the ones who are in the best position to spot the signs that a student is potentially suicidal.

Still, experts said it's better to err on the side of caution when noticing that someone is potentially suicidal.

"I think the conventional wisdom is don't leave a suicidal person alone," Kaplan said. "If you don't feel close enough to them to intervene try and work your social network to see if they can intervene."

For Sekulich, such wisdom hits close to home. At the urging of a friend, she went to a counselor, where she was evaluated and sent to the hospital for one week.

The 20-year-old said she still has to work at managing the effects of her bipolar disorder, but she openly shares her story through Active Minds, a student suicide prevention organization to encourage others to think more seriously about their mental health.

"It's important for me to stand up and say something," she said.

Q&A: Deer Repelant

Question: Last year we planted several plants/trees. They are growing wonderful; however, in the last couple of days, two of the plants an azalea and rhododendron have been eaten by deer. What is a good deer repellent that will not harm the deer.

Answer: You could try the commercial repellents which smell/taste bad to deer, or try a homemade one based on garlic and/or pepper. Some gardeners report success using soap (Irish Spring bars) hung from trees. You could also try caging off the plants with wire mesh. Unfortunately, the only really reliable long term solution is a very tall fence.

Q&A: Starting Lavender From Seed

Question: I have tried starting lavender from seed several times, and have no luck. Is there a special secret?

Answer: Lavender seeds have a pre-chill requirement prior to germinating, so maybe that's the step you've been missing. Pre-chill for 4-6 weeks by mixing the seeds with moistened growing medium, sealing in a plastic bag, and refrigerating. At the end of the chilling period remove the seeds and sow on the surface of moistened seed starting mix, just barely covering the seeds. The seeds are erratic in germinating but will sprout within 21-90 days when kept at 55-65 degrees. To maintain moist conditions, cover the pots or trays with plastic wrap after planting your seeds. As soon as the seeds begin to sprout remove the plastic wrap so fresh air can circulation all around the seedlings. Hope you have better success with your next batch of seeds!

Q&A: Germinating Seeds from Cold Storage

Question: I have several different types of vegetable and flower seeds that I inherited when my grandmother passed away. She kept them in her refrigerator or freezer and I have kept them that way since last summer. What is the best way to germinate them?

Answer: What a wonderful inheritance! Seeds that have been stored in a freezer ideally have a very low moisture content, and should be exposed to air for a few days before planting. This allows them to absorb moisture from the relatively humid air before being placed in a moist soil medium. After these few days of acclimation, if you want to test seed viability before planting, place a few seeds of each type between moistened paper towels, place the towels in a plastic bag with the end left open, and leave them in a warm spot (not in direct sunlight). You can then transfer the germinated seeds to soil, if you wish, or just use this method as a way to determine that seeds will still sprout. Were these seeds she had saved from her own garden plants? If you've been bitten by the seed-saving bug, you'll be glad to know there is a lot of information on the Web and in books to help you in this new hobby. Enjoy!

Tip: Water Fig Tree Carefully

If your indoor fig tree (Ficus) is starting to drop leaves it may be due to your watering schedule. Don't overwater, and don't let the tree stand in a saucer of water for an extended length of time or its roots may be damaged. On the other hand, don't let soil dry out completely either. 1. The Downside of Romney’s Nevada Win

Mitt Romney scored another decisive victory at the polls on Saturday, winning the GOP’s Nevada caucuses by double digits over Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul, who came in second and third, respectively. “I’m going to take it to the White House,” Romney told Nevada supporters, while Gingrich blasted his rival for outspending him 5-1. The Daily Beast’s Michael Tomasky writes that Romney’s victory isn’t as solid as the numbers suggest: between the petty dismissal of his debate coach this week and an economic rebound afoot, Romney faces a tough road ahead. Plus, Howard Kurtz, John Avlon, Michelle Cottle, and more columnists weigh in on the Nevada results.

2. Syrian Embassies Under Siege

Protesters were so angry over Syria’s latest and most brutal crackdown on dissent—more than 200 people were killed in Homs over the weekend—and the failure of the United Nations to pass a resolution calling on President Bashir al-Assad to step down, that they attacked seven Syrian embassies all around the world Saturday. The embassy in Cairo was set on fire, and mobs trashed the diplomatic offices in London and Canberra, Australia. Similar scenes played out in Athens, Berlin, Kuwait, and Libya. Russia and China's veto of the U.N. resolution has been called shameful, and the Syrian opposition said it amounts to providing the Assad regime a “license to kill.”

3. Gingrich ‘Happy With Where We Are’

Apparently Newt Gingrich doesn’t mind being trounced by Mitt Romney in the Nevada caucus; he said things are going quite well, actually, thank you very much. “What happens is every primary day or caucus day, the Romney headquarters in Boston sends out the rumor that they believe I will withdraw, which of course is their greatest fantasy,” Gingrich said in an unusual news conference Saturday night, after Romney declared victory in Nevada. “I'm not going to withdraw. I’m actually pretty happy with where we are.” Gingrich lost to Romney by nearly 16 points in Nevada, but says he would not “defend the outcome in a state where I was outspent 5–1.”

4. Russians Vow New Rallies

If way-below-freezing temperatures didn't stop Russian demonstrators from staging the biggest rally yet against Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, then there's not much that will. Tens of thousands marched through Moscow Saturday—police made a highly disputed claim that a pro-Putin rally across the capital was even larger—and the opposition said Sunday that they are already planning new actions. Organizers wrote on their Facebook page that "we will come again" before the March 4 presidential elections, which are expected to return Putin to the presidency.

5. Egypt Police Tear-Gas Tahrir

Cairo’s Tahrir Square entered a fourth day of chaos as Egyptian police tear-gassed rock-throwing protesters Sunday while trying to push them away from government buildings. The demonstrators are angry over rumors that the new government encouraged and failed to prevent a deadly stampede in a soccer stadium Thursday, and crowds have been surrounding the Interior Ministry, pelting it with rocks. At least a dozen people have been killed in Cairo and Suez since violent clashes between security forces and demonstrators began Thursday.
