Day 5 Morning Photos

The day 5 morning hunt has heated up with action. The team spotted over 45 deer with 5 bucks confirmed this morning. I was setup in the perfect ambush point with deer moving within 50 yards of my setup in the sage brush. I have the .300 win mag with the 8.5 x 20 scope on pole cat shooting sticks.

The largest deer that came by me was a large frame 3x3 that was probably about 20 - 22 inches wide. I may still take that guy, however there have been a few much larger mature bucks that have shown themselves out of range. Maybe tonight they will make the mistake of coming in closer.

Where we have setup, the terrain is to tough and the deer have bedded up on the rocky hillside with superior visual coverage. We can't get behind them due to wind and rock face, so we are still in a waiting game to see if they will follow the does down into the lower areas where we are setup to shoot.

Day 3 Hunt Totals

Day 3 of our hunt started off with a rain and snow storm starting about 4 am. We changed our plans and went to visit our good friend Elk Hunter (Mike) in Bairoil. We had a good visit and stopped to have some food at Grandma's the local restaurant located outside Bairoil.

The weather really shaped up for the afternoon, and the wind stopped and sun was out with temps in the mid 50's.

Our team seen a ton of antelope tonight and 14 elk including 3 nice bulls. No deer tonight but we have a plan to hunt a new area starting in the morning that will hopefully help us Zero in on where the big bucks have been hiding.

This year the opening weekend was pretty busy, maybe more than the last few years and with the number of hunters out in Region D our team is going to focus on areas that had less hunting pressure.

The team is having some dinner and then bed early tonight to be out in the new area before light as we will need to cross some open areas and we do not want to spook deer we anticipate will be feeding in or near the morning area.

This year our Hunting Team is using a new technology to capture our trip information for each day. We are posting from our smart phones and it is linked to our phone's GPS data. There are a few minor issues we are trying to work out with our GPS mapping but most of the data is on the mark.

This will help our friends to see the areas we are hunting and also be able to see live photos and video quickly from the field.

Well, it looks like we may have some snow up in the areas we are planning to hunt. Temps will be nice and cool, in the past we have had a mix of weather over the years during this season. In 2008 we had so much snow in the Shirley Mountains we couldn't get our trucks all the way back and it made hunting higher areas difficult.

Final Prep Work for 10/13 departure

Last shooting day before the trip.

The crew is doing final prep work to be ready for the October 13th departure date of the 2011 Wyoming Mule Deer Hunt. What that really means is that some work is being done in the afternoon's as most of the pro-staff are hunting Morning and/or Nights now that Michigan's archery season is open.

This year's adventure is just a few days away and everyone is very excited to get on the road.
