The music fuses harsh industrial tones with sleek, electronic pulses that match the film’s stark futuristic world. It also has a nostalgic feel. No More Workhorse said, “It starts out with pulsing, foreboding electronica in the shape of ‘Init’ and ‘Forked Reality’ before the first vocal piece. ‘As Alive As You Need Me To Be’ is classic NIN, albeit the heavily electronic side with a proper angsty chorus, give me something to believe in!” 

Trent Reznor’s voice commands four tracks on the album. His raw vocals pierce through “I Know You Can Feel It” amid waves of static and beats. On “Who Wants To Live Forever?” Spanish artist Judeline joins Reznor for an intense back-and-forth.

Dark, instrumental pieces weave between the vocal tracks. “Still Remains” builds tension through stark beats. “This Changes Everything,” “Infiltrator,” and “A Question of Trust” pulse with machine-like precision.

While Reznor and bandmate Atticus Ross scored films like Challengers and Soul before, this is their first full soundtrack as Nine Inch Nails. Their past work hints at the skills they bring to this new project.

The album takes a different path than Daft Punk’s pure electronic score for Tron: Legacy in 2010. NIN mixes raw vocals with stark instrumentals, aligning with the film’s score, incorporating recognizable vocals, and creating a fresh take on the Tron sound. 

In the film, an AI called Ares breaks free. Fans can stream the soundtrack now on NIN’s website. The film is set to hit theaters on October 10, with a Disney+ release to follow, alongside past Tron films.

How Hozier Graduated From the Attic to the Studio

From a young age, Hozier was enthralled by music. He taught himself how to play guitar and started writing songs by age 15. He dropped out of Trinity College Dublin, where he was studying music education, to pursue a career in music. After this career change, he found himself in his parents’ attic, writing and recording music constantly.

He penned “Take Me To Church” in three months and recorded the song in that very attic. Rubyworks, an indie record label, took notice of the haunting ballad and released the song in 2013. The corresponding music video was directed by Brendan Canty, Emmet O’Brien, and Conal Thomson, with a meager budget of approximately $1,900.

Despite these humble beginnings, Hozier soon moved from the attic to the studio due to the global success of “Take Me To Church.” The song topped the charts in over a dozen countries and peaked at No. 2 in the U.S. It remains one of Hozier’s most popular songs and laid the groundwork for his continued success in the music industry.

Film students Peter Tackaberry and Elizabeth Voss caught the wild set on two Sony Video8 cameras. “Kurt let me set up on the stage to capture the energy and spirit of the performance up close,” Tackaberry said, per PetaPixel.

The sale includes two master tapes, Camera A and Camera B, plus digital copies on MiniDV. A portable drive holds uncut footage, edited versions, and snapshots from that night.

The buyer will also get a tour poster from the band’s February 15 show at Raji’s in Los Angeles. There’s a white vinyl first pressing of “Bleach” too, one of just 1,000 made.

This show featured Nirvana with Chad Channing on drums, before being replaced by Dave Grohl. The tapes stayed locked away for 35 years. The winner gets full U.S. rights to the footage.

Bidding ended at 12 p.m. PDT  on September 25.

During Three Days Grace’s performance at active rock radio station WRIF-FM’s RiffFest on Saturday, Sept. 20, Adam Gontier and Matt Walst from the band spoke with WRIF personality Meltdown about the band’s time touring with the legendary Rolling Stones. Meltdown pointed out seeing some autographed memorabilia from the band backstage, too.

As the band explained, they did two shows with the Rolling Stones and “after the first night when we got off stage, there was a note from Keith Richards just saying, ‘Nice one pals.'” What an honor.

So, the band gave that note to their tour manager who gave it to Barry’s wife, Heather, to hold onto,” they continued. “Then, Christmas rolled around a few years later, and she got these things made up. A picture with us with the Stones and the set list and all that stuff. So yeah, it’s just a keepsake.”

Having Adam Gontier Back in Three Days Grace

Switching gears, the band also opened up about having Gontier back in the back as their vocalist but also keeping Walst as their singer, too. It’s a fun and unique dynamic to have both with the band.

“It’s been amazing, man,” Gontier and Walst said. “The fans are loving it, which we couldn’t be happier about.”

“We grew up together,” the guys added, “so it wasn’t like Van Halen trying to get their singers together. They are two completely different people from different places. We grew up in the same small town, so we’ve been friends for years. So, it’s been pretty easy.”

When Gontier was away from Three Days Grace, he formed Saint Asonia, and he talked about how difficult it was building that band from the ground up.

“For sure, man. I mean, that was probably the biggest challenge, was just trying to build up the name because, people didn’t know the name,” he told Meltdown. “A lot of people still don’t know the name, so I was starting from from the ground up on that one.”

Whether he’s playing with Three Days Grace or Saint Asonia, Gontier is just happy to be back on the stage.

“I love playing live,” he said. “It’s all about the music and playing shows. That’s what I love to do.”

So, he said that even though “the level of it changed, for sure,” in Saint Asonia, “it’s still fun to go out there and play.”

Bobbi Dunn Cantrell and her son Argyle traveled from Indiana to Douglass Park for the music festival. The birthday boy, now 16, held a sign that caught everyone’s attention: “Hi! It’s my 16th birthday! I’m autistic and Green Day is my special interest. Can I come on stage and sing ‘Know Your Enemy?'”, NME reports.

The mother and child had separated while she was on a quick bathroom break. “I was in panic mode all day because we got separated when I went to the bathroom and couldn’t get back to him. He parked by the stage around noon and didn’t leave all day,” wrote Cantrell on Armstrong’s Instagram.

Armstrong stopped “Know Your Enemy” mid-song due to health issues. “I have a really bad chest cold right now. I do. I’m a little bit sick right in here. So I need a volunteer. Who knows the lyrics to this song? Who knows it?” Armstrong asked the crowd.

The frontman’s eyes landed on Argyle’s sign, and up came the teen. Without missing a beat, he sang every word of the track from the band’s 2009 release 21st Century Breakdown. His mom’s heart leaped when she spotted him in the spotlight. “As soon as I saw him on stage I screamed ‘OMG THAT’S MY KID!’ What an amazing night! I am a new fan forever,” she wrote.

Later, Argyle shared images of his big moment online, showing off his handmade sign and clips of his stage debut. “I’m so insanely grateful,” he posted on social media.

The award spotlights musicians who channel the spirit of Oklahoma’s own folk legend. Winners must show dedication to justice, equality, and basic human worth, values that defined Guthrie’s work. At the event, his granddaughter, Anna Canoni, will speak about U2’s connection to her grandfather’s mission.

Since their 1976 start in Dublin, the band has woven social messages into their music. For over 45 years, they’ve crafted songs that shine light on global struggles. Their work includes many fights against crushing poverty.

• 1980: Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham died after consuming a large quantity of alcohol during a day of rehearsals for a North American tour. Out of respect for their fallen drummer, the remaining band members decided against replacing him and simply disbanded.
• 1990: Drummer Dave Grohl auditioned for Nirvana. He obviously got the job, and his first performance with his new band was a few weeks later, on Oct. 11.

Notable Recordings and Performances

Several quintessential classic rock albums dropped on Sept. 25, including the following:

• 1967: The Doors released their second studio album, Strange Days, through Elektra Records, about eight months after their self-titled debut album came out. While it didn’t achieve the same level of popularity as the first album, it still produced timeless songs, such as “People Are Strange” and “Love Me Two Times.”
• 1972: Black Sabbath released their fourth studio album, Vol. 4. Despite initial negative reviews, it went on to become the band’s fourth consecutive Platinum album and is now recognized as one of the most influential metal albums of all time.

Starting strong with “Concrete Jungle” and closing with a thunderous “Dethrone,” the band played songs from their whole catalog. “Specter” struck like lightning, and three songs later, “Impose” shook the crowd. These were the band’s first live performances of these tracks. These cuts could land on their fourth record, but the release date is still under wraps. Their 2022 release, The Death of Peace of Mind, made up half the set.

“Specter” is available online, and the track’s video pairs actor Ryan Hurst with visuals crafted by Noah Sebastian. “Impose” marks a shift in sound. The song steps back from the band’s normal crushing intensity, taking an unexpected softer turn.

The current lineup brings Noah Sebastian’s vocals together with Joakim Karlsson’s guitar work, Nick Folio’s drumming, and Vinny Muccino’s bass lines. Bad Omens has crafted their sound since 2015. 

Fans got what they wanted, from the raw power of “Artificial Suicide” to the punch of “V.A.N.” The hour-long set mixed “The Drain” and “Just Pretend” with fresh material, never losing its bite. During the show, Sebastian said, “I wanna see a mosh-pit. Or a wall of death — your choice,” according to Kerrang!.

“It’s a great honor… I’d like to welcome onstage Jack White the third,” said IDLES frontman Joe Talbot during the performance. 

The festival took over Douglass Park for three straight days. Green Day, Blink-182, and Weezer were some of the headliners. On the final day, IDLES rocked their set just before the headliners. British group Soft Play also joined for the final song of their set, “Rottweiler.”

White also played “With a Little Help From My Friends” with Ringo Starr at Louisville’s Bourbon & Beyond Festival on September 13. The two stars had already played together at Nashville’s Ryman Theater earlier this year, blasting through “Matchbox” and “Don’t Pass Me By.”

Next up, White hits Brooklyn’s CBGB Festival. He’ll co-headline with Iggy Pop at Under the K Bridge Park on September 27.

Meanwhile, IDLES keep working on their next album, the follow-up to 2024’s Tangk. They’ve nailed down 10 tracks so far and plan to finish up before year’s end. The band also wrote music for Darren Aronofsky’s new thriller Caught Stealing.

“We’ve recorded a bunch of songs,” Talbot said per NME. “We’re going to go back and do a bunch more. We’re recording with Kenny [Beats] and Nigel [Godrich] again. It’s really magic, I can’t wait.”

Mark Weiss caught the raw power of that night. From his black throne, despite fighting Parkinson’s, Ozzy threw up peace signs to the sea of 45,000 wild fans. “He came out with those peace signs, the infamous, beautiful way of welcoming his fans,” Weiss said per BBC Radio WM.

That night, his voice thick with feeling, he told his hometown crowd, “You have no idea how I feel. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

For the first time in two decades, the full Black Sabbath lineup took the stage. Weiss, who first shot Ozzy in ’81, watched it all unfold. “To see it now as part of his final farewell feels like the closing of a chapter I’ve been honoured to help tell through my lens,” he added.

Two documentaries about Ozzy’s life will premiere this fall. BBC One will air Ozzy Osbourne: Coming Home at 9 PM on October 2. Five days later, Paramount+ will air Ozzy: No Escape From Now. Big names like Tony Iommi, Duff McKagan, Billy Idol, and more will share their tales.

Some iconic rock artists achieved important career milestones on Sept. 24, including:

• 1957: Elvis Presley released the song “Jailhouse Rock,” which ultimately became one of his most famous songs. It was the first single released from the soundtrack of the movie of the same name, and the video of Elvis performing it is considered to be one of the earliest forms of the modern music video concept.
• 1991: The Red Hot Chili Peppers released their highly successful fifth studio album, Blood Sugar Sex Magik. It was certified 7x Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America, thanks to hits such as “Give It Away,” “Under the Bridge,” and “Breaking the Girl.”

Notable Recordings and Performances

Sept. 24 is the anniversary of some great shows and album releases:

• 1969: Deep Purple performed a special show at the Royal Albert Hall in London alongside the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The concert and the resulting album were significant, as this was one of the first times that a rock band performed and recorded with a full orchestra.
• 1979: The Eagles dropped their sixth studio album, The Long Run. It marked the end of the band’s classic era and was the final album before their disbandment in 1980. The next album was released in 2007.
• 1991: On the same day and in the same year that “Blood Sugar Sex Magik” came out, Nirvana released their second studio album, Nevermind. It included the hit song “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” and it’s widely considered to be the biggest milestone in grunge’s journey from the underground into the mainstream.

Who says that the post-grunge and nu-metal genres don’t have heart? Even though these rock genres are known for having heavy riffing, drop D tuning, loud beats and an overall angry vibe, that doesn’t mean some of these bands, and their songs, don’t have heart. Not every emotional song can be just about love. There are so many human emotions to explore, and many of these bands do just that.

Staind got their start in the 1990s and had some help from one of the pioneers of nu-metal. “After a volatile disagreement with Limp Bizkit’s Fred Durst over some of Staind’s early cover art, it seemed their big break had walked out the door,” the band explains on their website. “Fortunately, by the time Durst had witnessed Staind’s intense live show, he was ready to exchange phone numbers.” It’s a crazy story and very rock ‘n’ roll.

The rest is history, and Staind quickly became a huge success. While Staind is all about the heavy, their Break the Cycle album showed that they have a few soft spots. Massive hits like “It’s Been a While” and “Epiphany” were ballads but topped the rock charts.

Post-grunge, as a genre, doesn’t get enough attention when it comes to its ballads. Instead, the genre has topped the charts for decades with its aggression and angsty mood. As Yellow Brick says of the style of post-grunge music, “The genre often features powerful guitar riffs, catchy hooks, and introspective lyrics that touch on themes of personal struggle, introspection, and emotional vulnerability. The music tends to be more radio-friendly compared to its grunge predecessor, with a focus on melodic choruses and relatable songwriting.”

But let’s get into the genre’s softer music with Staind’s greatest ballads of all time.

Emotionally Heartfelt and Powerful Ballads from Staind

“It’s Been a While”

“It’s Been a While” is the song that made Staind a household name. Sure, the band had “Mudshovel” before it, but “It’s Been a While” was a ballad that shot to the top of the rock charts when it was released in 2001.

“It’s Been a While” was first released in March 2001, so the song is almost 25 years old. It was the lead single from Staind’s album Break the Cycle, and it was really an instant hit. The song even entered the top five on the Hot 100, which is super rare for any hard rock band, especially one in the early 2000s. It was more common in the 1980s, but not in more recent history. The song also ranked on multiple formats.

“The most successful tune in Staind’s discography still performs well to this day, as it stands out as a marker of that time in American history,” Forbes noted of the blockbuster song in a March 2025 piece. In that story, Forbes explained that the song was back on top of the charts earlier this year. “As it breaks back onto the Hard Rock Streaming Songs list at No. 19, ‘It’s Been a While’ reaches a new peak,” they said, adding that the “position now stands as the highest that the decades-old cut has ever climbed on the streaming-only roster in America.”

“Epiphany”

“Epiphany” was another massive hit for Staind that wasn’t a hard rock number. According to Genius, lead vocalist Aaron Lewis has “explained that this song is about Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD),” adding that “he has suffers from it but has never really done anything about it and chose to just allow it to manifest. The song tries to capture what it is like for Aaron with this disorder.”

Songfacts adds that Lewis explained, “‘Epiphany’ is just kind of another realization type of song, kind of an explanation” and that “it was an epiphany in the fact that I had heard the whole song in my head and just had to keep doing things until it was complete.” Songfacts also says that Lewis did “everything” on the track. “I programmed the drums, I did the keyboards for the strings of the chorus, played the guitar, played the bass and did the vocals,” Lewis added.

In a Facebook group, one fan of the band shared a story about the music video, noting, “Aaron Lewis said this was the most expensive video they ever did, and it makes him sick because it basically didn’t do (as well as) he had hoped.” The fan added that he’s “always found it to be one of their better songs, though.”

“So Far Away”

After the success of “It’s Been a While,” Staind repeated that run with “So Far Away” off 2003’s 14 Shades of Grey. The song marked the second single from their 14 Shades Of Grey album, following “Price To Play,” which is actually one of my favorite Staind songs of all time when it comes to their heavier numbers.

But, back to “So Far Away.” According to Songfacts, the song has Lewis “taking a step back to evaluate his life. All the struggles he went through and everything that seemed so important is now so far away.”

Genius adds that “So Far Away” is a track “of hope and uncertainty with beating addiction” and is “a song about moving on and not wanting to go back to that former life.” It’s so relatable, and that’s one reason why people love this song and Staind’s ballads, in general.

The song, according to Genius, was also the band’s second Top 40 hit and climbed to No. 24 on the Billboard 100. It crossed genres on the radio, too, and was played not just on rock and alternative stations but also on Top 40 and Hot AC, since it had such a widespread appeal.

I’ve interviewed both Aaron Lewis and Mike Mushok of Staind, and they’re both delightful people. It’s great to see them have this kind of success, and they keep going with more tour dates and new music. Staind’s most recent album in 2023’s Confessions of the Fallen, and they don’t show signs of slowing down.

The band played at Brooklyn’s Howard Gilman Opera House on Valentine’s Day 1995. Their stripped-down set featured songs from No Need to Argue, their breakthrough album. MTV aired the special two months later, capturing the raw magic of that night.

“We’d seen some of the biggest names in music like R.E.M., Pearl Jam, The Cure, and Nirvana do their Unplugged’s and were blown away to be following in their footsteps,” drummer Fergal Lawler mentioned, as reported by Antimusic.

Fans will find hits like “Zombie” and “Linger” on the album. The set also includes “Dreaming My Dreams,” “Ode To My Family,” and “Empty.” The string quartet Electra Strings, who backed the band on Later with Jools Holland in 1994, joined them on stage.

Two tracks stand out as special treats. “Free to Decide” and “I’m Still Remembering” hadn’t yet been released when the band played them that night. These songs would later be included on their 1996 release, To The Faithful Departed.

“Dolores and I wrote ‘Yesterday’s Gone’ just hours before,” guitarist Noel Hogan shared. “We sat at a piano, I pitched an idea, and the song came alive. MTV got the only live take we ever did.”

The band’s Happy Endings tour marks their final major trek across North America. Starting in Orlando, the band will play their last U.S. show at the Hollywood Palladium on November 5. Then, they’ll play in Mexico City on November 14.

The state of touring hits new acts hardest, Manson stressed. “Sometimes they’re sleeping in their van, sometimes they’re staying in really, really dodgy so-called motels, and it’s dangerous, and it’s really unacceptable, and it really has to stop,” she said.

In May, Garbage released Let All That We Imagine Be The Light, a critically acclaimed album with themes of love and empowerment. Manson said to NME, “I’ve never really written about love very much. I always think it’s been written about by people a thousand more talented than me. I’m just not a romantic person, really.” Despite industry pushback, fans stuck by them. “At times in the music industry, they’ve told us we’re old, we’re over, nobody’s interested. And then you lot came along. You were like, ‘get behind us, Satan’. And we won’t forget it,” Manson added.

Since 1993, Garbage has left their mark on music. Their peak came in 1998 when Version 2.0 topped UK charts. Hits like “Stupid Girl,” “Push It,” and the James Bond theme song, “The World Is Not Enough,” made them stars. The tour started on September 21 in New Haven, Connecticut. Skiba stepped up for “Bored to Death.” The song choice made sense, as he wrote it during his time with the group. This marks his second appearance with the band this year. Back in February, he showed up at their LA benefit show for wildfire relief. When Egerton took the stage, the band launched into “Hope,” a Descendents track they started playing again last month. 

They played a total of 21 tracks, old hits mixed with new material. They included crowd favorites like “The Rock Show”,  “First Date”, and “All the Small Things”, which turned into a massive sing-along.

That same day, Skiba’s main band, Alkaline Trio, also hit the stage. They played their Maybe I’ll Catch Fire album in its entirety. Fans were happy to hear songs like “Keep ‘Em Coming,” “Sleepyhead,” and “5-3-10-4,” which hadn’t been played live since 2015.

This stop is a part of Blink’s Missionary Impossible Tour. The festival goes on, with more acts lined up, including Weird Al Yankovic, Knocked Loose, Rilo Kiley, and Rico Nasty round out the weekend’s varied lineup. Fans can still get tickets on the festival’s website.

• 1977: David Bowie released the single “Heroes” from his 12th studio album of the same name. It was recorded in West Berlin a few months earlier and is widely regarded as one of his best songs.

Each night will start with the album played in its entirety. The band will then play other R.E.M. hits. The group also includes Jon Wurster on drums, John Stirratt on bass, Dag Juhlin on guitar, and Vijay Tellis-Nayak on the keyboard.

“It dumbfounds and delights me that we continue our crusade through this astounding catalogue of music from one of America’s most influential and unique bands,” said Shannon in a statement, as reported by Consequence. “Now we find ourselves at a summit, Life’s Rich Pageant, and we’re all pinching ourselves in disbelief to be so lucky.” 

“I don’t aspire to be in a cover band, but this is just so damn fun,” said Narducy, according to SPIN. “It’s more like a celebration band. Most of the comments from people are them sensing that we love the songs and they love the songs.” 

Starting in Denver, the 2026 tour snakes through major cities. Seattle, Los Angeles, Austin, New Orleans, and Chicago make the list. They’ll spend two nights at Athens’ famous 40 Watt Club.

Working with music writer Jason Pettigrew, Zummo breaks from typical rock star tales. “A lot of musicians write books to share their stories, from their creative lives to their crazy tour tales to more scandalous moments. This is not that book,” Zummo said, according to Idobi.

The book’s start came at a 2023 School of Rock Workshop. Fresh from the stage with Sum 41 and The Offspring, Zummo met Pettigrew at House of Vans Chicago. A quick chat turned into the book’s opening pages.

The text starts with words from Dhani Harrison. Inside, readers will find talks with Motley Crüe’s Tommy Lee, Sum 41’s Deryck Whibley, and the mind behind Vans Warped Tour, Kevin Lyman.

Zummo spoke about his goals: “From the beginning, my mission was seeing how these workshop events were saving lives first-hand, motivating and inspiring people.” He added, “I do five to seven events a year—a small amount compared to the sheer size of the world. I want to be able to have this message be around the world.”

Music will join the written word. An EP called Feels drops on October 24, and it’s the soundtrack for the memoir. Fans can hear the first song, “thank u (feat. Sorry x),” on September 26.

“You can’t turn the clock back,” Byrne told Rolling Stone. “When you hear music at a certain point in your life, it means a lot. But it doesn’t mean you can go back there and make it happen again.”

The set list included a total of four fresh songs from Who Is The Sky?: “Don’t Be Like That,” “I Met the Buddha at a Downtown Party,” “My Apartment Is My Friend,” plus a track that’s still unnamed. Byrne also covered Paramore’s “Hard Times.”

“Independence Day” from 1989’s Rei Momo album also made its comeback after three decades. The night’s surprises kept coming with “Strange Overtones,” a gem from his 2008 work with Brian Eno.

This year marks 50 years of Talking Heads, celebrated by a new “Psycho Killer” video starring Saoirse Ronan. “This video makes the song better,” the band shared with Rolling Stone. “We love what this video is not — it’s not literal, creepy, bloody, physically violent or obvious.”

Shows run through North America until December 6. Then they move to Australia, starting in Auckland on January 14, 2026. The final shows of the tour will take place in Paris across two nights, March 18 and 19, 2026.

My Chemical Romance announced the new tour dates on Monday, September 22, and released a trailer for the tour, which you can watch below. Tickets for all new dates go on sale starting Friday, Sept. 26, at noon local time.

The U.K. and European leg of The Black Parade 2026 will set off on June 30 in Liverpool and wrap up on July 18 in Madrid. They’ve also added a third night to their stint at London’s Wembley Stadium for July 8, so they’ll be playing three nights at that venue.

The tour’s North American leg will resume on August 9 at New York City’s Citi Field and visit Nashville; Washington, D.C.; Detroit; Minneapolis; Denver; San Diego; Phoenix; San Antonio; and three dates in Los Angeles. Special guests for the U.S. shows vary, but they include Franz Ferdinand, Pierce The Veil, Modest Mouse, Iggy Pop, Sleater-Kinney, The Breeders, Babymetal, Jimmy Eat World and The Mars Volta.

“Selling a staggering 450,000-plus tickets across just 10 North American markets, My Chemical Romance’s hugely successful ‘Long Live: The Black Parade’ tour concluded earlier this month to widespread praise from critics and fans alike,” a statement on the band explains.

This was their first U.S. show since the album topped Billboard’s 200 chart in May. “I love it because all these people — I don’t know how many — but, I heard chatter about people like, ‘Sleep Token headlining?'” Brian ‘Head’ Welch told Louder Sound. 

“Some people were saying they’re so young to be able to headline so quick. And they came with that stage? Shut everybody up.” 

The band members, known as Vessel, II, III, IV, and Espera, stuck mainly to tracks from Even in Arcadia and their 2023 work Take Me Back to Eden. “Look to Windward” kicked off the night. The set list also included hits like “Emergence,” “Caramel,” and “Damocles.” 

After three years, they brought back “Thread the Needle” from their 2016 EP, One. Even in Arcadia shot the band to new heights this year. The record claimed the top spot in 11 nations, including the U.S., Austria, Britain, and Germany. 

Australian band Thornhill starts each night of the tour, which runs until October 11. The next stop hits Orlando’s Kia Center tonight. The tour schedule includes stops at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center, and LA’s Crypto.com Arena.

“I’d always written music with my brothers, so there are all sorts of particular complexities in that, but I’ve never worked like this before,” said Kiszka to Kerrang!. Nick Pini adds depth on bass and keys while Mikey Sorbello plays drums. The music took shape at Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios in Bath, with Dave Cobb at the controls.

Magic struck when Kiszka and Turpin met at Kiszka’s place in East Nashville. Three days of intense work birthed seven songs, including “Feels Like Gold,” “Raider,” and the haunting “Skyway Drifter.”

Arena crowds got an early taste during recent Greta Van Fleet shows. “We’d be on as the first band of three in an arena that might be 12,000-capacity. … The response was so overwhelming that by set two, they seemed to be singing back 75 percent of the songs,” Kiszka said.

The artists’ first collaboration came when Kiszka added guitar work to Ida Mae’s 2021 release, “Click Click Domino.” 

“If we do something, I think it’s going to be a little serious, and we should lean into it,” Turpin told Kiszka when discussing the project, according to Nashville Scene. Turpin also emphasized the importance of capturing a spontaneous, live feel in recordings.

A simple text mistake gave birth to the band’s name. When Kiszka tried typing “Marauder,” his fingers slipped to spell “Mirador,” a word for a lookout tower. The mistake stuck, matching their musical aims.

Dead Sara’s former frontwoman, Emily Armstrong, is now at the mic, performing with Mike Shinoda, Joe Hahn, and Dave Farrell. Alex Feder now plays guitar in Brad Delson’s spot, while Colin Brittain plays the drums instead of Rob Bourdon.

“I feel like that was really loud, like you really sang that one,” Shinoda told the crowd, according to RIFF Magazine.

The circular stage put musicians at the heart of the action. Massive screens, bright lights, and laser beams helped liven up the atmosphere. Even fans in the highest seats got an up-close view of the show.

They played fresh tracks from their 2024 album From Zero, as well as old hits. The band surprised fans last fall by announcing their return and bringing Armstrong into the mix. 

During hits like “Numb” and “In the End,” Armstrong stepped back as fans sang the words. Shinoda switched between singing, playing guitar, and playing keys all night. His solo spot included tracks from his Fort Minor project, “Where’d You Go” and “Remember the Name”.

A 2023 agreement with Cornell’s estate made this album possible. This deal gave the band rights to use Cornell’s final recordings, as reported by Rolling Stone.

The studio work stirs deep feelings. Cameron opened up, “Hearing (Cornell’s) voice on these powerful hard rock songs is the most empowering thing in the world for me. Then I listen to his voice soloed up when I’m working on stuff, or if Kim or Ben is working on something, and it all comes back to the fact that he’s not with us and he left us in a way that has so many questions. It’s been gut-wrenching but at the same time very empowering,” he told Billboard.

Guitarist Kim Thayil spoke about finishing what they started. “Our objective and goal was always to complete that,” he mentioned in a Rolling Stone interview.

This is the band’s first new music since King Animal dropped in 2012. Recording began in 2015 but stopped when Cornell died in May 2017.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will welcome Soundgarden on November 8 in Los Angeles. Disney+ will stream the event live.

“I’m really excited for this record to finally be out,” Vanlerberghe said, according to The Aquarian. “The responses off the singles have been great so far.”

With twelve tracks, this release marks the first without Brian Burkheiser’s vocals after twelve years. Vanlerberghe now covers both melodic and intense vocal styles.

“This whole record process was all not only finding the next sound and era of I Prevail but it was also finding my voice,” Vanlerberghe said. “Singing is mostly confidence.”

Steve Menoian plays lead guitar with Dylan Bowman on rhythm and backup vocals. Gabe Helguera handles the drums. Their Summer of Loud tour had them join forces with Parkway Drive, Killswitch Engage, and Beartooth.

The band is set to play an intimate show at The Crofoot in Pontiac, Michigan, today, Sept. 18. This 1,100-capacity venue was where their first hometown show took place a decade ago. We Came As Romans and My Ticket Home will open.

• 1931: The first 33 1/3 rpm long-playing (LP) record was demonstrated at the Savoy Plaza Hotel in New York. Although it wasn’t initially a popular format due to its high price and limited quality, Columbia Records revived the LP in 1948, and it led to the creation of the popular music formats we still use today.
• 1967: The Who made their debut on U.S. television, appearing on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. It’s fair to say the band started their American career with a bang, as drummer Keith Moon overloaded his drum set with much more flash power than usual, intentionally causing a dramatic explosion — which left him with permanent hearing damage.

Notable Recordings and Performances

Sep. 17 is also the anniversary of many quintessential album releases and performances:

• 1964: The Beatles played an impromptu show in Kansas City, earning $150,000, a huge figure at the time for a one-off concert. To show their gratitude, the band included a cover of Little Richard’s medley “Kansas City/Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey!” in their setlist.
• 1991: Guns N’ Roses released Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II simultaneously at midnight. Instead of the typical double album format, they released the two as completely separate albums to make them more accessible to fans.

As of January 2025, Three Days Grace ranked just a little bit behind Shinedown for the most No. 1s in the history of the Mainstream Rock Airplay chart, according to Billboard. Both bands have ruled the charts this year, too, with both notching No. 1s in 2025.

For Three Days Grace, the band snagged its 19th No. 1 on Billboard‘s Mainstream Rock Airplay chart in January 2025 with the rock anthem “Apologies.” That was their second No. 1 rock hit in a row, following their song “Mayday” topping the charts in 2024.

On September 10, 2025, Shinedown announced that they had scored their 23rd No. 1 single on the active rock chart with “Killing Fields.” They also dropped some exciting news that Shinedown will perform at the Grand Ole Opry for the first time ever on October 10. “We’re beyond excited to make our Opry debut,” guitarist Zach Myers said in a statement. “Being a kid from Tennessee, most of my early memories were watching the Opry show every weekend with my grandmother and never considering standing on that legendary stage to even be an option. Now that it is, we couldn’t be happier to be a part of such a historical year of Opry history.”

Three Days Grace and Shinedown’s Followers

Three Days Grace and Shinedown share a similar audience of modern rock lovers, and they’ve toured together before, too. Both bands really broke out in the 2000s, so the same kind of rock fans discovered them during that time. They represent the best of post-grunge with anthemic anthems and empowering messages in their music.

The chemistry that these fans share is that love for big, chugging riffs and melodic hard rock songs. Both bands’ fans also seem to gravitate to the groups’ powerful messages about believing in yourself, fighting the odds and growing up strong despite some difficulties.

There are examples in both Three Days Grace and Shinedown’s music of songs that appeal to the struggling adolescent. Growing up can be a difficult time in life. Youngsters go through everything from bullying to rebelling against parents to not knowing how to deal with having a crush, and that often happens during those teenage years.

Both Shinedown and Three Days Grace have music that’s perfect for the adolescent who’s looking to get out some anger by listening to music. By appealing to the angsty feelings of a generation, both bands have developed a strong fanbase, and even as those fans get older, they still love that music.

Shinedown and Three Days Grace Songs That Fans Adore

One example of a Three Days Grace song that appeals to adolescents is “I Hate Everything About You,” where Adam Gontier seems to be rebelling against his parents or situation. “At its best, the band’s focus and adherence to alt-metal’s formulas — coupled with tight songwriting and some unexpectedly pretty choruses — results in a strong tracks that are more memorable than the work of many of their peers,” the AllMusic Guide states of the song and album in a review of the band’s debut album. “‘I Hate Everything About You’ was Three Days Grace’s big single and remains the band’s best song, gaining most of its power from its directness and bluntness in examining a dysfunctional relationship.”

Another Three Days Grace song that really fits the adolescent is “Just Like You.” The track, which was one of the band’s earliest hits, is about not wanting to be just like your parents, but it uses nicer words, so it’s not as jarring to parents who overheard their teenagers cranking it. Musically, it has the heavy guitars and anthemic sound for which the band is known.

One of Shinedown’s songs that has great message for adolescents is “Bully.” The hard rock anthem addresses bullying, and as SongFacts notes, “It sends a message of strength to those who are victims, reassuring them that they’re not alone and there are many who have made it through.” Bully is off the band’s 2008 studio album, Amaryllis, and was the lead single off that release. It’s basically saying to stand up to the bullies in your life and to not let them get you down.

Another Shinedown song that fits the theme of growing up is “Killing Fields,” their 2025 chart-topper. The track starts as a slow-burner and explodes into what Shinedown calls a “fiery, anthemic chorus driven by soaring guitars. Lyrically, it explores the chaos and struggles of modern life with a mix of ambiguity and emotional honesty — leaving room for listeners to interpret its meaning through the emotions it stirs within themselves.”

In a release, Smith talked at length about the song, stating, “‘Killing Fields” is not a song that has one specific meaning” and that “the subject matter in this song cannot be prioritized to one specific opinion.”

He added, “The audience is the boss, and they should have the freedom to interpret it the way they hear it, feel it, and experience it. What I will say is that the song is meant to push you, to inspire you to think for yourself, and ask questions. We all know we are living in complicated times. The true question is, how will you respond.”

So, there’s certainly a chemistry between both Three Days Grace and Shinedown’s fans, and those fans seem to love these bands’ styles of music that combines post-grunge and hard rock, as well as their themes of growing up, fighting against the odds and coming out on top. Way takes the mic and bass, while The Interrupters’ Aimee Allen adds backup vocals. Kevin Bivona sits at the keys and produces, and Jesse Bivona keeps time on drums. Fender’s Michael Schulz, who runs their Signature Artists division, rounds out the group on guitar.

This marks Way’s first musical output since My Chemical Romance’s 2022 single, “The Foundations of Decay.” Doug McKean, a trusted collaborator who worked with MCR, recorded the new track before he died in 2022.

Success struck The Interrupters when “She’s Kerosene” reached No. 4 on Alternative charts, according to Billboard. Their paths crossed with Way when they put their spin on “Bad Guy” for The Umbrella Academy, Way’s Netflix creation.

The stadium shows wrapped up in North America on September 13. These shows mark two decades since their groundbreaking 2006 album, The Black Parade, hit stores.

“My Mind Is a Mountain” is from their latest work, Private Music, and it took nine weeks to reach the summit. On X, the band wrote, “private music | … listen to ‘My Mind Is a Mountain’ now.”  

The song holds its ground. It was at No. 1 on the Mainstream Rock Airplay and No. 5 on the Hot Hard Rock Songs charts through mid-September. 

This achievement tops Ozzy Osbourne’s previous mark. The Prince of Darkness waited 26 years, from “Crazy Train” in 1981 until “I Don’t Want to Stop” hit the top in 2007.

Private Music made waves across Billboard’s rankings. It topped four rock charts and broke into the top 10 on three others. Vinyl buyers pushed it to No. 2 on that specialized list.

The album’s impact runs deep. Each of its 11 songs found spots on Billboard charts. “Infinite Source” led the pack first, then “My Mind Is a Mountain” took charge. Two more tracks, “I Think About You All the Time” and “Milk of the Madonna,” still command top 10 spots.

Foo Fighters Are Back

“The 3.7 earthquake a few miles west of Atascadero wasn’t the only seismic activity to rock San Luis Obispo County last night, as Foo Fighters treated a capacity crowd of FF faithful at the Fremont Theater — many of whom camped out overnight for tickets — to a career-spanning set featuring the thunderous debut of new FF drummer Ilan Rubin,” a press release from the band stated.

The release goes on to say that Grohl, along with Nate Mendel, Pat Smear, Chris Shiflett, Rami Jaffee and new drummer Ilan Rubin will play their second show of 2025 Monday at the Observatory in Santa Ana.

This concert marked the band’s first since their gig at the House of Blues in Anaheim, CA, on Sept. 6, 2024, which was their last one with former drummer Josh Freese, according to Setlist.fm. According to NME, Grohl made an announcement during the show that Rubin is now officially Foo Fighters’ new drummer.

“Everybody else has said it, I finally get the opportunity to say, ladies and gentlemen, will you please welcome … Ilan Rubin, is playing drums in the Foo Fighters. It’s official,” Grohl said of the band’s new drummer, according to reporting from NME.

The band pulled out all of the hits for their first show of 2025, including “Learn to Fly,” “Times Like These,” “My Hero” and “Everlong,” to name a few. Metallica and Master of Puppets really helped shape the style of heavy metal music and were pioneers in the genre. While Metallica wasn’t the very first metal band of all time, with that honor going to Black Sabbath, there’s no disputing that James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett, Lars Ulrich and the band’s bass players have helped create the sound of heavy metal that is still known and loved today.

Metallica’s sound has changed over the years, but they always stayed solidly in the space of heavy metal. Initially, Metallica was pure thrash and grew a huge underground following, but fairly quickly, they changed their sound to a more melodic metal style. While that change really came out on The Black Album, it’s easy to even hear some of those more melodic styles on Master of Puppets.

Metallica’s story starts with their first concert on March 14, 1982, at Radio City in Anaheim, CA, and it’s been such a long career that today, the band is still selling out arenas around the world. It’s impressive, because not many metal bands, or artists of any genre, can say that they can sell out arenas and stadiums decades after they first formed, but that’s the case with Metallica.

Master of Puppets is undisputedly one of the greatest heavy metal records of all time. Songs off this record really helped shape the sound of heavy metal, and for that, we’re forever grateful. Let’s dive into this classic album.

The Story of Metallica’s Master of Puppets

Even though Metallic showed a little of their affinity for melodic metal on Master of Puppets, a lot of this record was still pure thrash metal. The album’s title track, “Master of Puppets,” is often called one of the greatest thrash metal songs ever created, largely because of its complex strong structure, heavy riffing, aggressive rhythms and quick rhythms.

In an interview with Medium in 2014, Hetfield talked about the band’s music, including Master of Puppets, and how many of the band’s themes revolve around death. When asked if he thought it was weird that a band that writes about death a lot could do so well, he seemed to think it made sense.

“I think people relate to what we do, there’s probably a universal thread of fear that we all share of death and what happens after that and why are we here,” Hetfield told Medium. “People can relate to questions more than the answers” he added, noting, “answers are easily given but relating to a question is more bonding than having the same answer.”

When making Master of Puppets, the band had to take into consideration the climate of metal music in the Bay Area at the time. As Pitchfork notes of the album’s timeline, “The lasting characteristics that took metal from its from heavier rock offshoot to its own distinct form were already taking shape by the time Metallica released their third album Master of Puppets in 1986. The Bay Area thrash scene where they originated—and quickly divested themselves from—was born from one of the most successful mergers in music: metal riffs and punk energy.”

The Making of Master of Puppets

Master of Puppets was Metallica’s final album with bass player Cliff Burton, who passed away in a bus accident during the album’s tour in 1986. For that reason alone, it stands apart from their other releases.

Hypnotizing Power: The Making of Master of Puppets is a fan-made documentary about the making of the record. “A fan made documentary that compiles hours of footage which tells the making of Metallica’s third studio album, Master of Puppets,” the movie’s synopsis states in IMDb. “With accounts from the band members, the film details how the band struggled through the making of the record and goes on to detail the success of it, then how the thrash metal pioneers cemented their legacy in metal history.”

Watching that documentary, it’s obvious that Metallica put a lot of heart, soul and brain power into this album. There’s a reason it’s such a great album, and that’s because the band really took their time with it to create a masterpiece.

In a 2016 interview with Ulrich, the drummer talked to the The Guardian about the making of Master of Puppets. He emphasized the importance of variety on the set. “We had a tendency to look at our albums as a collection of different dynamics: there’s a fast song, a mid-tempo song, a ballad, an instrumental,” he said. “It’s like food groups – you need your carbs, your protein, all of that.”

In an interview with Louder Sound that was revisited in 2022, Ulrich said of the album, “I would like to say that there was something magical in the air in the summer we wrote Master Of Puppets, something that hasn’t been there before and has never existed since, but that would be a lie. I guess we just had the right attitude and the right openness to ideas.” He also said the band was getting more confident.

Of Master of Puppets, musician Devin Townsend told Billboard in a 2017 interview that when the album was released, “it was a paradigm shift for me and the people around me as the stage had been set for them to really continue their momentum and they delivered in every way. Even the tonalities they chose, intentional or otherwise, were of such a foreign and antagonistic quality that it stood alone in a sea of fantasy inspired and image-centric heavy metal.”

Riffology adds that at the time the band made the album, “glam metal dominated MTV, while underground bands in America and Europe pushed music to darker, heavier, and faster extremes. Metallica stood at the front of this movement, blending aggression with complexity and ambition.”

The tour starts on June 29 at Stockholm’s Strawberry Arena and includes stops at the Stade de France in Paris, Milan’s Ippodromo Snai La Maura, and Berlin’s Olympiastadion. Their single UK stop is at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on July 13, with the final show in Warsaw on July 18.

“For years, personally, I didn’t wanna tour at all. I had back surgery. I had a lot of issues, so I was not, health-wise, in a place where I could travel a lot,” vocalist Serj Tankian mentioned in an interview with Eddie Trunk, as reported by Louder Sound.

Shavo Odadjian spoke up about the band’s fresh start in April. “We’re older now, and we respect each other, and we’ve talked. We’ve noticed how social media, and the media in general, has swayed us. We’ve just turned everything off and… we’re grateful for each other,” he told Metal Hammer.

As the tour continues, British punk force IDLES takes over the main support slot. The Barbarians of California start each night. The following stops are in Baltimore, St. Louis, Denver, and Kansas City. 

The fall schedule also includes appearances at major festivals. The band will play at Atlanta’s Shaky Knees Festival on September 19. Just one day later, they play Louisville’s Louder Than Life. They’ll also play at Sacramento’s Aftershock festival in early October.

Two massive shows conclude the tour. San Diego hosts Dia de los Deftones on November 1, with the final concert being at Mexico City’s Corona Capital on November 16.

The brothers started their comeback on July 4 at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium. Noel, 58, and Liam, 52, just rocked two full houses at Pasadena’s Rose Bowl Stadium, which fits 90,000 fans.

Oasis’ photographer, Kevin Cummins, believes the band could be ready to record their first album in 17 years. “I don’t see why they couldn’t get in the studio and record an album. Noel is writing songs all the time, and Liam’s voice is well-suited to what Noel writes,” he said, according to The Daily Mail. The band’s recent world tour may have earned up to £1.2 billion. 

Their bank accounts were healthy before the reunion, and fan interest surged after the reunion news. Their greatest hits collections included Time Flies and (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? Both shot into the top five, and old songs also climbed the charts. In 2022, Liam played Knebworth solo. The year before, fans watched a film about the original 1996 shows in theaters. It’s hard to believe that Shinedown continues to top the charts even decades after they first got together. The band first formed in Jacksonville, Florida, with singer Brent Smith putting together the band in 2001 after his previous band, Dreve, called it quits.

While the band’s lineup has changed over the year and Smith has remained the only consistent band member, the group’s massive, post-grunge style hasn’t altered. When speaking about the band’s successful 2007 album, The Sound of Madness, Smith talked about wanting to leave a legacy with Shinedown.

“I said, ‘You know what — when I’m dead and gone, when everybody in this band has passed or what have you, I want the world to remember this as a record that needed to be made, and that there was a reason for it,'” Smith said in the band’s biography on their website. “That was the motivation behind this album.”

Well, the band is leaving a lot of music behind for which Smith will be remembered. Their 23rd No. 1 hit is “Killing Fields.” In a release, Smith talked about the song before playing it for the crowd at a show, stating, “Do me a favor, and if you lost someone in your life that’s no longer on this planet anymore and you think about them every single day and say to yourself ‘I wish I had one more day (with them), if I had one more minute,’ and they’re no longer on this planet I want you to raise your hand.'” Then, you can see half of the arena have their hands up. It became a viral moment online.

Even Shinedown’s non-hits can rock. Here are some of their tracks that didn’t hit No. 1 but deserve attention, with the exception of “Killing Fields, which did hit No. 1 but is still not as known as their older chart-toppers.

Shinedown’s Underrated Singles

“In Memory”

“In Memory” arrived on Shinedown’s debut album Leave a Whisper, which dropped in 2003. Speaking with Meltdown of the WRIF, vocalist Brent Smith talked about this underrated song. “This is one of the last songs written and recorded for the album. It’s another collaboration with Rick Beato,” he said. “‘In Memory’ was also at a point where I was so tired of writing songs.”

Even though he was tired of writing songs, Smith sure sounded amazing on “In Memory.” It’s an understated Shinedown song that should get a lot more attention.

“Crying Out”

Here’s another gem off Leave a Whisper. “Crying Out” is a radio-friendly song that never really got released to radio, which is a shame. It’s a beautiful song that could have been a huge radio hit.

“This song was nearly released as a single,” Meltdown said Smith told him in that same interview. “He told me he recorded the vocals for this one very early in the making of the album, right after ‘Fly From The Inside.’ As far as the writing process and working with producer Bob Marlette, he said, ‘I did a little bit more, loosened up a little bit, had more of a flow, you know, with Bob and what have you.’ He said it was a great live song.”

“What a Shame”

“What a Shame” arrived on Shinedown’s 2008 album, The Sound of Madness, which featured a bevy of blockbuster, No. 1 singles. “What a Shame” didn’t top the charts, but it’s a glorious rock number.

“This song is about a man who was at the lowest point in his life,” Genius says, adding that “people wouldn’t give him the time of day” and that it’s “a shame that people didn’t help him, because they judged him for not even knowing his struggles.” Genius adds that “everyone has struggles and nobody should ever judge without knowing the whole story,” but this man “was judged so harshly by his world that he died.” In the song, Smith tells them to give him wings of an angel.

“Dangerous”

“Dangerous” is a beautiful and empowering song from Shinedown, so it totally fits their vibe. But, it was never a chart-topper, which is too bad.

As Songmeaning describes, “Dangerous” is about empowerment and standing up for who you are and your believes. “The lyrics talk about refusing to be silent and instead choosing to be bold and fearless,” they state, adding that “the song encourages people to speak up for themselves and not be afraid to take risks.” They add that “it’s a declaration of independence and strength, encouraging listeners to be unapologetically themselves and to be unafraid of the challenges that come their way” and that “the song celebrates the idea that everyone is important and has a voice, and that it’s okay to be dangerous in the pursuit of living authentically.”

Genius adds that the song “talks about how people can easily be manipulated by the mainstream into believing anything.” As Smith sings in the track, “I could stand behind my barricade, do what I’m told and be afraid to change.”

“Killing Fields”

Even though “Killing Fields” is a No. 1 hit, since it’s one of Shinedown’s later songs, it’s not as famous as their earlier hits. Of the song, Smith says in a release that “‘Killing Fields’ is not a song that has one specific meaning. The subject matter in this song cannot be prioritized to one specific opinion.”

Smith adds that “the audience is the boss, and they should have the freedom to interpret it the way they hear it, feel it, and experience it. What I will say is that the song is meant to push you, to inspire you to think for yourself, and ask questions… We all know we are living in complicated times… The true question is, how will you respond.”

A Song Shaped by Early-Life Challenges

Thomas cowrote “3AM” with Jay Stanley, John Leslie Goff, and Brian Yale when they were in Tabitha’s Secret, a band formed in Orlando in the early ’90s. The lyrics came from his experience as a teenager when caring for his mother, who was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma when he was 12. She was told she had six months to live but managed to survive the illness.

Thomas has described their relationship as one defined by sharp contrasts, with periods of deep connection often giving way to tension and emotional distance. That mix of feelings comes through in lines from the song, especially “It’s all gonna end, and it might as well be my fault.” By the time Thomas left home at 17, the song had already taken shape. The first version, recorded by Tabitha’s Secret for their self-titled EP, was slower and more acoustic than the version most would come to recognize.

After the band split in 1995 due to management and label issues, former members Goff and Stanley reissued the original version on an album called Don’t Play with Matches.

That same year, the other members of Tabitha’s Secret, Thomas, Yale, and Paul Doucette, formed Matchbox Twenty along with guitarist Kyle Cook. They reworked “3AM” for their debut album, giving it more energy and a clear production style, which became a key part of the band’s identity.

From Personal Song to Major Hit

The song “3AM” was released to U.S. modern rock radio in October 1997 and quickly gained traction. Between 1997 and 1998, it spent 10 weeks straight at No. 1 on the Billboard Adult Top 40 chart, reached No. 3 on the Hot 100 Airplay chart, and made it to No. 4 on the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 chart. It also topped the Canadian RPM chart and reached No. 31 in Australia.

It wasn’t released as a physical single in the U.S. and, therefore, didn’t appear on the Billboard Hot 100. Even so, it did become one of the most played songs on the radio during 1998.

The single’s success helped their debut album, Yourself or Someone Like You, to obtain over 12 million sales in the U.S. and earn Diamond certification. It also received a Multi-Platinum certification in Australia. The single itself was certified 3x Platinum in the U.S. and 4x Platinum in Australia.

The Video That Defined Its Look

Directed by Gavin Bowden and filmed in Los Angeles, the music video matches the song’s mood, with mundane settings that reveal symbolic images. The band plays near a row of telephone booths, switching from muted color to black-and-white shots. Thomas is shown walking through empty streets, passing construction signs, and interacting with a man driving a Pontiac Trans Am who has a catheter strapped to him. The man asks for a cigarette and then drives off.

In the late ’90s, MTV was still a major force in helping bands break through, and “3AM” received heavy rotation. “I’d love to,” Ozzy says, laughing. Then, Ozzy adds, “One hour left, kids. You’ve got one hour left to finish those builds — or else.”

At the end, Kelly thanks her dad and says “this was perfect. We love you.” We do love you, Ozzy.

Singer Jordin Sparks is also part of the show. In an interview with KFox14, she talked about Kelly losing her father and said that she hadn’t had a chance to offer her condolences directly to her yet.

“I did see somebody who knew her [on set], and I asked them to give her my condolences,” she told Courtney Tezeno of the outlet. She added, “It happened so quickly. He had just had his farewell show. And I, honestly, I can’t imagine what it’s like because my dad is still around. It’s a pain that I don’t understand. But I really feel for her because I know they were very close.”

Sparks also said, “She’s amazing. I love you, Kelly. She is the sweetest, kindest woman, but she’s also an incredible host. She was so fun and so kind with the kids.”

Ozzy died on July 22 at the age of 76, following a fight with Parkinson’s disease.

When asked about the frequent links drawn between the two acts, the singer stayed grounded. His words struck a modest tone: “I’m a big Radiohead fan, and I think they’re one of the most amazing bands of our generation. So it’s flattering, yes, to be compared to a band as great as them. Do I think that we are? Not necessarily.”

Both bands made big shifts in their sound. Deftones stepped away from nu metal with White Pony in 2000. This move mirrored Radiohead’s switch from rock when they made OK Computer in 1997.

“We could have easily made another Around The Fur or Adrenaline,” Moreno said in The Irish Times about their older albums from 1995 and 1997. “At that point, considering nu metal was the biggest thing at the time, with the successes of Korn, Limp Bizkit, Papa Roach, and other bands, our record label thought it would have been the smartest thing to do.”

The singer praised Radiohead’s impact on his band’s path. He said they were a huge influence, and his mind was blown when he watched one of their videos in the studio while writing Around The Fur. The group keeps pushing past labels. Moreno said that metal mixed with pop sounds is another genre the band has to escape.

The first image appeared on September 4. It was six pairs of shoes set in a ring. Two days later, they posted shots of Dave Grohl, bassist Nate Mendel, and guitarist Pat Smear tracking music. Lead guitarist Chris Shiflett wrapped up the week.

This marks their first studio time since drummer Josh Freese left in May. Ilan Rubin took over drums in July 2025, moving from Nine Inch Nails. In an interesting twist, Freese went back to his old spot with NIN, where he played from 2005 to 2008.

Their last full album, But Here We Are, came out in 2023. It was the first since the death of drummer Taylor Hawkins in 2022. On October 18 in Los Angeles, Grohl will attend a charity gala recognizing his efforts to serve meals to homeless and food-insecure people in his community. 

Shows start in October across Indonesia, Japan, Singapore, and Mexico, and they’ll last through November. The schedule got shorter after Grohl had to take some time off for family members. This tour is the first time the Foo Fighters will perform live since September 2024.

• 1988: The Guns N’ Roses song “Sweet Child O’Mine,” from their debut album Appetite for Destruction, began a two-week run at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. It’s the band’s only chart-topping single to date.
• 1991: Nirvana released the single “Smells Like Teen Spirit” from their second album, Nevermind. While it wasn’t expected to be a hit, it was played in heavy rotation on both radio and MTV and ultimately became a huge commercial success.

The ability to really get creative with their sound is one reason Green Day has been able to rule the music world for so many decades. The band got together in the 1980s, at the height of hair metal, but they really broke out in the 1990s. As Green Day FM notes, “with millions of fans scattered across the world and an almost unbelievable career that’s been reinvented multiple times over the span of decades, the California band has proven it doesn’t need to be labelled to be successful. Alongside other intrepid bands like Bad Religion, Rancid and The Offspring, Green Day is credited for ushering punk music into the mainstream in the 1990s.”

Green Day was totally independent at first, but they eventually signed to a major. Remember, this was before bands really had the ability to release their own music to the masses like so many musicians do today, so one really needed a major label to get heard. As Britannia notes, “Green Day built a cult following and found a foothold in California’s burgeoning punk revival scene, of which they were one of the main engines. The band’s next album, Kerplunk (1992), was also released by Lookout Records, but it drew attention from bigger labels, including Reprise, which released Green Day’s major-label debut, Dookie, in 1994.”

“The songs on Dookie are consistently fast-paced and explosive, as Armstrong croons about themes such as boredom and loneliness while expressing a youthful apathy and anger in how he reflects on life itself and how his lyrics depict his relationships with other people,” notes Cardinal Nation. “All of this is set behind the backdrop of chaotic yet organized drum movements, slick bass-lines, and thundering guitar chords that refuse to let up through the album’s runtime.”

While Dookie didn’t have any breakout ballads, the band’s subsequent albums did. Perhaps it was a sign that even Green Day, a band known for singing about adolescence, was growing up. So, let’s get into four of Green Day’s best ballads of all time and rank them.

4. “Last Night on Earth”

Yes, Green Day can write a love song, and that’s apparent in 2009’s “Last Night on Earth.” It’s a beautiful love song that singer Billie Joe Armstrong wrote for his wife.

In a 2009 interview with Billboard, Armstrong said that “Last Night On Earth” is a love song he directly wrote for his wife on piano, and he also described it as a very intimate moment. It was also different for him because he used falsetto for the first time in a while, at least. “Even on our harder rock numbers, like ‘Murder City,’ I was doing it a little bit of falsetto,” he told Billboard. “There are two different kinds of falsetto people can do. One is the irritating kind, and then there’s the other kind, where it sounds like it’s an appropriate thing for the song.”

3. “2000 Light Years Away”

Here’s another lesser-known Green Day ballad. Armstrong wrote the track about his girlfriend at the time, Adrienne Nesser, and what’s cool is that the two ended up getting married. “They met at a house party in Minnesota where she’s from, started exchanging letters, and eventually fell in love,” Songfacts notes. “He couldn’t bear being on tour and missing her (‘I dream about her, because she’s 2,000 light years away’).”

2. “Wake Me Up When September Ends”

Of course, one of Green Day’s most famous ballads is the chart-topping “Wake Me Up When September Ends.” It’s even a pop culture meme at this point, whenever September rolls around.

The subject matter of “Wake Me Up When September Ends” is sad but comes from a real place. According to a separate piece in Songfacts, Armstrong wrote the song about his father, who passed away of cancer on September 1, 1982. “At his father’s funeral, Billie cried, ran home and locked himself in his room,” the outlet said, adding that “when his mother got home and knocked on the door to Billie’s room, Billie simply said, ‘Wake me up when September ends,’ hence the title.”

Wow, that’s quite a story. Speaking with People magazine, he said, “My father died in September of ’82, and I purposely, up until that point, never went there” and added that “I think really what I was doing was processing that loss that I had with this person that I never really knew. So I wrote that song for my father and about that loss and how 20 years had passed.” Armstrong also said that after writing that song, he felt a big weight lifted off his shoulders.

1. “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)”

The crowning glory of Green Day’s catalog of ballads, of course, is “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life).” When it came out, it shocked the music world, because they didn’t expect an acoustic ballad from a band like Green Day. But, it was a massive hit and was quickly used at high school graduations across America.

So, what was “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)” written about? “It’s about trying to be cool, accepting that, in life, people go in different directions,” Armstrong told Rolling Stone in an interview. “People come into your life and it’s wonderful, but they seem to go out of your life as quickly as they came in.”

According to Songfacts, “Lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong wrote this song when his girlfriend moved to Ecuador to live with her family and continue her schooling. He tried to be levelheaded about it, but to show his anger, he named the song ‘Good Riddance’ and made ‘Time Of Your Life’ the subtitle.”

This sighting lines up with McCartney’s plans for a new album in early 2026. Music fans can’t stop talking about the chance of him working with Noel and Liam Gallagher. No one has made any official statements about it, but fans are eager for a joint photo or song. 

The Live ’25 tour includes the first Oasis performances in 16 years. No one saw the Manchester group’s return coming after the fierce fights between the brothers that split them up. The shows might lead to new music from the band. According to The Mirror, a source close to the band said, “Noel has been inspired by playing to adoring crowds, who have supercharged his creativity. But he is undecided whether his work will become a new album for Oasis with Liam on vocals.”

The Gallagher brothers patched things up last year. Their split lasted 14 years, starting in 2009. 

The tour may continue in 2026. The Daily Mail reported that an insider said, “It’s ultimately up for them to decide. The Oasis reunion hasn’t just been concerts. You can see that it’s been a cultural movement. Nothing comes close in recent history to Oasis’s shows.”

Sure, Nirvana is known for Nevermind, and it’s that album and the songs off that release that made them worldwide superstars. But, their story didn’t start with Nevermind. Well before that album came out, Kurt Cobain and the band were on SubPop Records and a very different band. They toured Europe on their debut album, 1989’s Bleach, and played small venue and clubs but already had a very excited base of followers.

The early Nirvana was a big part of the Seattle scene with bands such as Screaming Trees, Mother Love Bone and Mudhoney. Sadly, lead singer Andrew Wood from Mother Love Bone passed away before Nevermind came out, or else Mother Love Bone is another grunge band that could have been huge. Wood passed away on March 19, 1990, and Nevermind came out the following year. But, the group was the precursor to Pearl Jam, featuring Pearl Jam’s instrumentalists with Eddie Vedder on vocals.

So, Nirvana’s sound on their early music in the 1980s was different from their style in the 1990s, although they did sound like the same band. Let’s look at their early work and compare it to Nevermind.

Nirvana’s Bleach and Nevermind albums had one major difference, and that was really that Nevermind was a more polished and produced album. Produced by Butch Vig, Nevermind had a more radio-friendly style than the band’s previous material, and it fit perfectly on the radio because of that.

Nirvana recorded Nevermind at Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, California, and Smart Studios in Madison, Wisconsin, in May and June of 1991. It was released on September 24, 1991, and took off.

Cobain told Clash Music that Nirvana’s “early songs were really angry,” however, “as time goes on the songs are getting poppier and poppier as I get happier and happier.” He added, “The songs are now about conflicts in relationships, emotional things with other human beings” and that “when I write a song the lyrics are the least important subject.”

So, by the time Nirvana recorded Nevermind, they had matured a bit as songwriters, even though they were still known for some of the same nonsensical lyrics and themes.

Another big difference between Bleach and Nevermind is that they featured totally different drummers. Chad Channing played drums on Bleach, and Dave Grohl played on Nevermind.

A funny story from the recording of Bleach comes straight from Channing. In an interview with Nirvana bass player Krist Novoselic for the Seattle Weekly, he says of the often underrated album that, “Working on ‘About a Girl,’ the song didn’t have a title by that time, so I asked Kurt, ‘What is that song about?'” Cobain replied that it was simply about a girl, so Channing suggested to do with that. The rest is rock ‘n’ roll history.

He added, “When we set up in the studio in Seattle, the idea was to detune everything. The drum heads were really loose, and it was kind of hard to play because you didn’t get that snap-back. Jack Endino taped a coin to the kick-drum head so it would have a brighter tone.”

Bleach Was Raw, Nevermind Was Polished

So, Bleach was popular on the underground circuit, but it was nothing compared to Nevermind. The latter took off like wildfire and quickly became one of the biggest rock records on the planet.

Even though Butch Vig is known for his work with many bands, Nevermind is really is crowning glory. Speaking with NPR in 2011, Vig said that he was excited to work with Nirvana and that “as I started talking to them, they told me they were ready.”

Vig added that the band had been rehearsing every day for three months and that “there was definitely not a slacker ethic in that band,” which is a bit of a contradiction to how some like to pain Nirvana. “I mean, they wanted to make a great record,” he added, “and Kurt [Cobain] was very ambitious, you know. When they walked into the studio, they were ready to go.”

In a separate interview with Billboard, Vig talked about the creative process behind Nevermind. He said that the album defined that particular time and place. “[Kurt Cobian] was singing about things that we don’t even understand, but somehow you can hear him trying to fight through that frustration and rage, his fragility… all those complex feelings he expressed at the time still resonate today,” he added.

Later in the interview, Vig said that he didn’t really listen to the album after it was released and distanced himself from it a big after forming Garbage. But, he did revisit it around the 20th anniversary of the record. “And it wasn’t really until about the 20th anniversary that Dave Grohl, Krist [Novoselic] and I got together a lot and we did a lot of interviews and press for the 20th,” Vig said, adding that, “and we went back and dug through all the masters, we had the album re-mastered and then we found some outtakes.”

Vig also reminisced about the first time he heard that song that he would eventually record for Nevermind, telling Uncut, “It was a boombox recording and I heard this scratchy guitar and Dave’s drum fills and then sheer distortion. The recording was horrible, but I could tell the songs were tight and hooky.” The recording was taken at a rehearsal, and Vig mentioned that on the tape, Cobain introduced Dave Grohl as the band’s new drummer before launching into the songs.

So, while Bleach and Nevermind are different in that the former is very raw and the latter is more polished, they both have that Nirvana grunge style. They’re both worthy albums and should be seen as some of the Seattle movement’s finest. Contact me with your thoughts.

“All of our rooms have been booked by June,” a Langham Huntington sales associate said, as reported by Pasadena Weekly.  Lisa Derderian, chief communications officer of Pasadena, said in a statement that the influx of guests will boost income for hotels, car rentals, and food spots. “We can’t really put an exact dollar amount on it, but it’s a win-win for the Rose Bowl Stadium and the city,” Derderian said, according to the same source.

Some fans even crossed oceans for these shows. Liam Desmond, a 49-year-old realtor from Manchester, UK, watched the band play at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey before heading west to Pasadena.

“I’ve spent a fortune flying over here and staying in Manhattan,” Desmond said. “But it’s worth it since this is a once-in-a-lifetime string of concerts. I saw Oasis back home when I was just a lad.”

Some spots won’t see much change. “The Oasis concert itself isn’t expected to have a direct impact on the Gamble House,” said Sheryl Scott, Director of Communications and Operations of the Gamble House Conservancy.

McCracken spilled details about the album to Rolling Stone AU/NZ. He said, “There’s a big plan for next year. We’re doing a split EP, not with My Chemical Romance, but with just half the band. We’ve joined forces via a super group.”

Starting with two nights at Portland’s Revolution Hall, the musicians will take their music across North America. The upcoming ‘Denali’ Headline Tour will see them stop at iconic venues like Oakland’s Fox Theater and Minneapolis’s First Avenue, followed by Chicago’s The Salt Shed, and finally Terminal 5 in New York.

The track’s name was inspired by the renowned Alaskan mountain, Alaska’s towering peak. “Denali” is a nod to the band’s roots in the northern state.

Portugal. The Man’s 2017 album Woodstock shot them into stardom. The hit single from the now RIAA-certified Platinum propelled them into even greater heights. Grohl hit the stage with Fear’s Lee Ving, blasting through the 1982 track “Beef Bologna,” as reported by Stereogum. It wasn’t the first time that Grohl joined forces with the cover band that Taylor Hawkins started before he died in 2022.

Taylor’s son Shane Hawkins played the drums, Wiley Hodgen was on bass guitar, and Brent Woods played lead guitar. The show raised funds for animal rescue through the Eastwood Ranch Foundation.

The night hit its peak when KISS bassist Gene Simmons got on stage. He played KISS songs “Deuce” and “Rock And Roll All Nite,” then finished with Motorhead’s “Ace of Spades.” His daughter Sophie Tweed-Simmons added her voice to the final number.

The Cars’ guitar wizard Elliot Easton played three classic songs, “Just What I Needed,” “Candy-O,” and “Let the Good Times Roll.” Then Anthrax’s Scott Ian played a few Black Sabbath covers, joined by his son Revel Ian and wife Pearl Aday for a special version of “Sweet Leaf.”

Former Skid Row frontman Sebastian Bach played four songs. He teamed up with Jane’s Addiction’s Stephen Perkins for “Mountain Song,” sang Ozzy’s “Crazy Train,” and ended with a raw, stripped-down take on Skid Row’s “18 and Life.”

Rush’s “Working Man” kicked off the 21-song marathon. The setlist covered a lot of rock history, with songs from Talking Heads, The Stones, Zeppelin, and Van Halen.

In a new interview with The Face published Thursday, Sept. 4, Williams revealed the status of the pop punk band and its future.

“Do we ever know where we’re at?!” Williams said of Paramore. “We always take huge breaks.”

Time to Breathe

Williams explained that part of Paramore’s rhythm has always been about stepping back to process life before diving into the next record.

“In order for us to metabolize s— that we go through as people, it takes the amount of time it takes between albums,” she said.

And even though she just dropped a new solo project, Williams shut down any idea that Paramore had split.

“There are no better musicians in the world than Zac [Farro] and Taylor [York],” Williams said. “There are no better performers than [the touring musicians affectionately known as the] Parafour. It’s just magic, man.”

Solo Moves

Earlier this summer, Williams gave fans a surprise gift: 17 singles she once shared online and deleted. On Aug. 28, she officially released them as an album titled Ego Death at a Bachelorette Party.

The new project is personal, and Williams admitted part of going solo is about building strength in herself.

“It’s also really important for me to strengthen other muscles and these parts of myself that I deflated because I was scared that people were going to notice me too much,” she said.

What’s Next for Paramore?

Fans shouldn’t panic. Paramore’s latest album, This Is Why, dropped in 2023, and they even followed it with a fresh version called Re: This Is Why.

So yes, Paramore is catching its breath. But if Hayley Williams’ words are any clue, the band’s story is far from over.

Fast-forward a few decades, and the music industry in the early ’90s had become sanitized, lacking the social consciousness of previous generations. While grunge was the most popular antithesis to that, it mostly focused on inner struggles, such as depression, alienation, and addiction. Then, in 1992, Rage Against The Machine arrived on the scene. Their music was a mix of metal, punk, and rap, while their lyrics focused on anti-establishment themes that remain valid to this day. This article analyzes these themes, as well as the band’s impact on both music and society.

The Foundation of Rage: Anti-Corporate and Anti-Establishment Themes

RATM made their intentions clear from the get-go with their band name. “The Machine” represents all the major forces keeping common people down, including the corrupt government, greedy corporations, racist institutions, violent police, and U.S. foreign policy.

Music was the ideal medium for their message, as it could reach young people and inspire change. However, it had to be good for it to be effective. RATM’s style was like nothing audiences had heard before, with multiple genres blended into something unique, aggressive, and powerful. Frontman Zach de la Rocha’s vocal delivery and guitarist Tom Morello’s distinct sound made the band popular enough for their message to carry weight and reach the right people.

Military-Industrial Complex Criticism: “Bulls on Parade” and War Profiteering

One of the most common subjects in RATM songs is U.S. foreign policy, particularly the way it leverages foreign conflicts to boost its military budgets and divert funds to its corporate cronies. The band saw an opportunity to spread their anti-imperialist message through music. As Zach de la Rocha put it in a 2000 interview, “I’m interested in spreading those ideas through art, because music has the power to cross borders, to break military sieges and to establish real dialogue.”

Their second studio album, Evil Empire, focused on criticizing the actions taken by the U.S. government throughout the second half of the 20th century. It was cleverly named after a term that former president Ronald Reagan had used in the ’80s when referring to the Soviet Union, which the band felt was also applicable to their home country. The song “Bulls on Parade” stands out with lyrics such as “Weapons, not food, not homes, not shoes, not need, just feed the war cannibal-animal.” The band used to dedicate it to George W. Their track “My Mind Is a Mountain” also got to the top of Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Airplay list. After three decades in the game, this is their first Billboard number one.

Their next hit, “Infinite Source”, got to the top spot on Hot Hard Rock Songs. The track got 4.2 million U.S. streams. “My Mind Is a Mountain” is at number two, with 3.2 million streams and 3.1 million radio plays.

The band is very well-represented on the Hot Hard Rock Songs. Their tracks own the top six spots, while all eleven album songs are in the top sixteen. This hasn’t happened since Linkin Park and Sleep Token’s runs in 2020.

Young fans keep finding their way to Deftones through social media. Classic tracks like “Entombed,” “Cherry Waves,” and “Sextape” are gaining popularity on TikTok.

Metallica has evolved over the years, but they’ve maintained a consistent sound that is all things heavy. While Metallica was 100% thrash in their early career, they famously changed their sound to a more mainstream and melodic metal style, and that made them an even bigger success. Sure, they lost some of those early fans, but this band would never have become the worldwide powerhouse that they are today if they hadn’t broadened their sound, and for that, we’re grateful. Besides, it’s boring to stay the same, and thankfully that’s not Metallica.

Metallica performed their first concert on March 14, 1982, at Radio City in Anaheim, CA, and today, they’re still performing shows around the world. Not many metal bands, or artists of any genre, can say that they can sell out arenas and stadiums for two nights in a row, but that’s what Metallica has been doing on their latest tour.

People love Metallica for many reasons, and one of them is the band’s songs. Certain songs from this group truly helped shape heavy metal.

Metallica’s Genre-Defining Songs

Metallica’s most significant change in sound came with The Black Album. That album was huge for Metallica, and it changed not only their sound but also their influence in the metal world. Heavy metal went from a niche genre and one that didn’t get a lot of attention or respect to a genre that was suddenly cool. That was a lot to take for metalheads who relished being the outsiders, but it’s the reality that when The Black Album came out, people who had never listened to metal started walking around in Metallica shirts and going to their shows.

‘Master of Puppets’: Defining Thrash

When it comes to thrash, though, there’s one Metallica song that really defined the genre during its start, and that’s “Master of Puppets.” The song, off the band’s 1986 album by the same name, is often considered their biggest and best thrash song, thanks to its complex strong structure, heavy riffing, aggressive rhythms and fast pace. With “Master of Puppets,” Metallica created the perfect blueprint for thrash metal, and it’s one that many bands have followed.

Of Master of Puppets, the entire album, musician Devin Townsend told Billboard in a 2017 feature that when the album was released, “it was a paradigm shift for me and the people around me as the stage had been set for them to really continue their momentum and they delivered in every way. Even the tonalities they chose, intentional or otherwise, were of such a foreign and antagonistic quality that it stood alone in a sea of fantasy inspired and image-centric heavy metal.”

Matthew Kiichi Heafy, Trivium added, “If only one Metallica record could be shown to someone, Master not only summarizes all the ranges of sound Metallica excels at (from slow and melodic, to fast and brutal); it also encapsulates everything that had done in the past, present, and hinting at what was to come in the future. The Black Album got me into metal, and Master Of Puppets showed me what can be done with metal.”

‘Enter Sandman’: Defining Melodic Metal

Metallica released their fifth studio album, The Black Album, on Aug. 12, 1991, and it was very different from their previous albums at the time. The Black Album changed so much for the group. Before this album, Metallica was an underground thrash band with a solid following. But, The Black Album made their musical style much more commercial, and the melodies and tuneful songs made for a much more commercial-friendly record.

Some of Metallica’s biggest songs were on The Black Album, including “Enter Sandman,” “The Unforgiven,” “Nothing Else Matters,” “Wherever I May Roam” and “Sad but True.” The album also spent four consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, making it their first album to go No. 1 on album charts.

Of those songs, “Enter Sandman” is often noted as the song that created the melodic and mainstream metal sound. Listeners and metalheads can debate about which songs off this album is the best, but the lush, rich riff of “Enter Sandman” and melodic nature of the song really helped define what it meant to be a heavy metal band that makes tuneful music.

The songs’ meaning is incredible, too. As the Houston Press describes, “‘Enter Sandman’ is all about the liberation of living a life entirely free of fear. Maybe you’ve long considered the song an optimistic, life-affirming ditty.”

Pitchfork said of the album, “After years of wild thrash metal, Metallica simplified everything and became the biggest band in the world. The Black Album‘s dark, muscular sound would permanently alter the course of heavy music.” Later, they added, “But these are the guys who gave us Kill ‘Em All; they won’t stop until they’ve slayed Poison, Mötley Crüe, Ratt, and every last one of those platinum-blonde, spandex-wearing false heirs to the heavy metal throne with their own weapons: massive riffs, clean vocals, sharp arrangements, and layered mixes that gush from the speakers like knife wounds.”

“Hetfield swallowed his annoyance and rewrote the lyrics, reframing it as a kind of twisted lullaby that drew on a child’s fears, real and imagined,” Louder Sound adds in a September 2022 feature. “The Sandman of the title was a reference to a mythical figure who would sneak into children’s bedrooms to sprinkle sand in their eyes (ironically, the band had been sitting on the title Enter Sandman for ‘six years,’ according to Lars Ulrich).”

The gents of Metallica truly changed the musical world with their music, and that includes both the genres of thrash metal and melodic metal. So, it’s not surprising that a band that even recently helped an EDM music festival would be adventurous enough to help spawn different musical movements.

According to The New York Post, on September 1, a packed stadium fell silent as Liam said, “I want to dedicate this next tune to the kiddies of Minneapolis — Live Forever.” The attack claimed eight-year-old Fletcher Merkel and a ten-year-old girl. “Fletcher loved his family, friends, fishing, cooking and any sports that he was allowed to play,” Fletcher’s father, Jessie Merkel, said, according to NBC News. “While the hole in our hearts and lives will never be filled, I hope that in time, our family can find healing.”

The New Jersey show marked a key stop on the band’s comeback tour, which started on July 4 in the UK. MetLife and the rest of the United States hadn’t seen Oasis perform since 2008.

During the encore, Noel Gallagher spotted first-timers in the crowd. According to The New York Post, he called out, “You might’ve wondered what it might be like to sing this next song with 60, 70,000 of your fellow Oasis fans. Well, you’re going to find out what that feeling is like.” After wrapping up in Pasadena on September 7, the band heads south to Mexico. Shows in Japan, Australia, and Brazil follow, with São Paulo hosting the final night on November 23.

The dancer’s ties to the band stretch back decades. After his star turn in “Pretty Fly,” he also appeared in their “Why Don’t You Get A Job?” video. He also danced with them at Woodstock ’99. 

Before picking Cohen, the band almost went with actor Seth Green. “I mix The Running Man with the Roger Rabbit,” Cohen told Spin magazine about his moves. “Then I drop down and freak the ground.”

The band’s current shows also include new songs. Guitar player Noodles spoke to NME: “We’re just getting warmed up! I want to keep it going and I’m still looking for ways to make it bigger than it ever has been before.”

While bands such as Faith No More and Pantera had previously offered glimpses of what was to come, alternative metal reached its heyday in the mid-’90s and early 2000s, with bands such as Korn, Slipknot, Limp Bizkit, and Linkin Park breaking into the mainstream. Another one of these bands was Deftones. While their first two albums put them on the map and helped them gather a dedicated fanbase, it was their third offering, White Pony, that established them as a quintessential alternative metal band. 

White Pony‘s Release and Initial Reception

White Pony was released in June 2000 via Maverick Records. It was recorded a year earlier in California and was considerably more complex than the band’s first two albums. Deftones added elements from several other styles, including trip-hop and hardcore, to their classic alt-rock sound. While slightly less heavy than their previous work, White Pony was an instant hit with both critics and the public. 

Reviewers appreciated its musical diversity, with aggressive passages seamlessly blending with softer ones to create a unique sound. NME’s initial review gave it an 8/10 rating and mentioned that, despite being “slightly too long and gothic,” the album shows that “Deftones are staking a claim to become the big genre-unifying American rock band who everyone will acknowledge as the kings — like them or not.” 

Chart Performance and Sales Milestones

The album’s sales figures matched the hype. It debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 chart and went on to sell 178,000 copies in its first week alone. It sold 500,000 units and earned Gold certification a few months later in September, but it would take two more years for it to sell another 500,000 and go Platinum. Total sales in the U.S. and Canada were around 2 million, giving the album double-Platinum status. It also earned Gold certification in several other countries, including the U.K., Australia, and New Zealand.

As with most albums, White Pony‘s singles were the driving force behind its success. The album’s first single was “Change (In the House of Flies),” released in May of 2000, about a month before the full album launch. Justin Meldal-Johnsen, who has previously worked with Beck, Nine Inch Nails, and St Vincent, produced the record.

“We started work on an album this year and the way that normally goes, we write, we rehearse, we record, we mix, we get it all wrapped up tightly and then start putting songs out into the world,” said Britt Daniel in a statement to Rolling Stone. “But as we finished up the first two songs for the LP, it crossed somebody’s mind and eventually all of ours that these two really should come out now.”

These tracks drop just as Spoon hits the road with Pixies. The trek started in Santa Ana and will reach 20 other cities. Stops include Colorado’s Red Rocks and New Jersey’s See.Hear.Now festival in Asbury Park.

The 1997 OK Computer became viral on TikTok, with one clip featuring it getting more than 1 million likes.

“How can a song be so depressing yet so hopeful at the same time?” wrote one TikTok user in a video caption, according to Consequence. The track gained extra attention after playing in The Bear season finale.

The band’s past Billboard success includes their breakout hit “Creep”, which reached number 34 in 1993, “High and Dry”, which reached 78 in 1996, and “Nude”, which peaked at 37 in 2008. Their UK success runs deeper with seven tracks breaking into the Top 10.

Band members reunited last summer to rehearse for an upcoming reunion. As bass player Colin Greenwood shared with The Guardian: “We got together in the summer just for a couple of days and just ran through all the songs and picked up where we left off in 2018. It was really fun and nice to see everyone.”

Since their 2016 release, A Moon Shaped Pool, no new music has come out. The band released Hail to the Thief Live Recordings 2003-2009, which includes footage from multiple shows.

Both Sumerian Records and Pale Chord record labels shared the image on their channels. Then, ex-Bring Me The Horizon member Jordan Fish added it to his Instagram Story.

Fish produced Poppy’s Negative Spaces album last fall. “Poppy wanted to do big rock songs, which I can do, I guess,” said Fish to NME. “In my mind, she hadn’t really put together a body of work that felt super coherent, so that was the challenge.”

The producer just wrapped work with Lee and Halsey on “Hand That Feeds” for the John Wick spin-off, Ballerina. Since stepping back from Bring Me The Horizon in 2023, Fish has thrown himself into studio work.

At this year’s Grammys, a red carpet mix-up caught attention when a reporter thought LaPlante was Poppy. She played along: “I am Poppy, and I am really happy to be here, nominated with Knocked Loose. I really hope we win.”, as reported by NME.

Mike Stringer of Spiritbox also spoke about past work with Fish. “We were really embarrassed, because it’s like Jordan’s so cool and nice and awesome to work with, that you forget that he’s a famous person,” LaPlante told the Zach Sang Show.
