Some people say podcasting is dead. And that videocasting would kill it. They said the same thing about Radio when films and television came to be. And yet radio has survived and it has even gone digital – podcasts and digital radio.

I have been a podcaster on and off for a couple of years and I have found out that there is still a space for podcasting out there. Podcasts are for those who have the patience to download and listen to audio files lasting from fifteen minutes to even two hours.

And podcasts take on many forms:

1. Speech – At its most basic form a podcast could be a speech by the podcaster. A reading of his or her post. it could be a rant, an impassioned speech or a discourse and even story telling.

2. Radio/Magazine Show – A podcast can also be a radio show. A talk show, A magazine show with many features, interviews or even games. It could also be a time where music can be played – assuming of course it is podsafe music – free to be distributed to the public.

3. Radio Play - This is probably the most tedious of all podcasts but also when done correctly the most rewarding both for the podcasters and its listeners. Welcome to the Theatre of the Mind. A good template to follow for this type of podcast would be the radio plays from the Golden Age of Radio – Mercury Theatre’s War of the World is a fine example and even Vincent Price’s Three Skeleton Key Island.

And the beauty of it all is that all you need is a podcasting microphone, audacity , an open source software for recording and editing sounds – available for Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, GNU/Linux, and other operating systems, and time.

Podcasting is not dead.

For those of you that haven’t been keeping up with everything I am doing, I just wanted to mention that I was on two podcasts this past week, PerfCast had another episode, and Jeff and I talked to Patrick O’Keefe and TechCanuck is back with a long overdue episode where James and I cover our top ten gadgets of the year. We will be doing a few more 2008 in review episodes as we launch into the new year, and I hope you’ll all check them out.

As the episode count rises on both shows, I realize that I’ve been on over one hundred podcasts now, and growing. It is amazing what a little time and effort with friends can do.

Let me know your thoughts on TechCanuck and PerfCast, and if you are looking for a co-host for your podcast, please let me know.

This episode, and hopefully every episode will run in around an hour, and includes some great staples to the show like the blogging job of the week and the blogging challenge of the week that I hope people will participate in.

I tried using X-Lite this week, instead of Skype, in hopes that it would improve my sound quality, and it did a little bit, but the drops in my connection were inexcusable and I will just have to play around with different methods in hopes of providing both the best sound quality possible and the highest stability.

If you have any comments, questions or other criticisms, please send them to perfcast at gmail.com. We would really love some feedback.

The episode runs at just under an hour with the first five minutes or so introducing the show and ourselves. Feel free to jump over that to get to the meat and potatoes of the episode though.

The next episode will be recorded live on Thursday September 4th, 2008 at 7 P.M. EST.

If you want to find out more information on how to participate, check out the PerfCast Live Participation post on Performancing.

If you have any comments, questions or other criticisms, please send them to perfcast at gmail.com. We would really love some feedback. One thing I noticed in listening to the recording is that my audio wasn’t as high quality as Jeff’s and so I am going to try to connect using X-Lite (instructions on Jeffro2pt0) next time instead of Skype to see if that improves things.

Thanks to all those that listened live, and those that are listening to the recording. I really appreciate it, and hope you enjoy the episode.

Sorry for the one day delay in getting this episode out. I had the worst day in a long time yesterday, and wasn’t really in the podcasting mood. Tomorrow is another episode of WordPress in Review, so check out that tomorrow. Also, if you are interested in hearing more podcasting on this blog, please let me know as I would love to focus on bringing more audio content to this blog.

I also talk about issues with WordPress 2.6, mention the theme of the week, and talk about the WordPress Weekly podcast. Stick around until the end for what might be a cool podcasting related announcement.
