iPhone 5 Specs, Features and Price (September 2012)

The iPhone 5 was the most anticipated Apple handset launch since the iPhone 4. The 4S offered only an incremental, albeit antenna-fixing, upgrade, and the fifth-gen iPhone arrives just as many 4 users’ 24-month contract comes up for renewal.

However, in that time we’ve seen a seismic shift, with competing smartphones offering quality and desirability to match and even surpass the iPhone.

But wait a goddamn minute. Statistics don’t lie (usually) and, just as we were putting pen to paper, Apple announced that pre-orders for the iPhone 5 hit two million in 24 hours, spanking its previous record of one million in a day for the iPhone 4 and ensuring that many won’t see their new precious until October.

So, with it clearly hooking the gagging mouths of many, how does it perform as ‘the latest iPhone’ and, crucially, how does it match up against the superphone stars of today?

iPhone 5: Build

Let’s start with the chassis because, let’s face it, that’s the only distinct visible change to differentiate it from its two previous family members. Grasp the frame in your hand and the first thing you’ll notice is the weight; it’s the lightest iPhone ever.

By a long way. At 112g, it’s 20% daintier than the iPhone 4S, 16% less butch than the Samsung Galaxy S3 and 14% lighter than the HTC One X. Reducing the SIM to weency, or ‘nano’, size has helped, minutely, as has making the shell out of anodised aluminium.

The brace of glass strips adorning the top and bottom of the rear give both the black/slate and white/silver models a premium feel but are actually employed to allow an uninterrupted phone signal. No-one wants another antennagate.

Despite Keynote claims, the 7.6mm-deep iPhone 5 isn’t the thinnest smartphone in the world – the Huawei Ascend P1 S, Oppo Finder and ZTE Athena are all sub 7mm – but when the depth is combined with the weight, it feels sufficiently waif-like in the hand.

And we’re not convinced that’s for the good. Of course we want our mobile tech to be light and lithe, but what we’ve loved about previous iGenerations is the weighty, industrial feel, the security of feeling something solid in your pocket (no jokes) and knowing that, if it takes a knock, it’s not going to shatter into a billion plastic pieces.

Don’t get us wrong, it’s a miracle how Apple has shed so much excess podge and millions of people will love the lightweight design, but we preferred the more robust, weapon-like nature of the 4S. A case of Marmite-y opinion, perhaps.

iPhone 5: Features

The four-inch screen, which we’ll come onto in detail shortly, is Apple’s belated nod to the industry trend for bigger displays, and means the iPhone 5 now stands a proud 123.8mm tall – width remains the same at 58.6mm.

The extra screen real-estate is welcome, though smaller-handed iPhone users might struggle to reach the standby button with a forefinger while holding it in a natural position. They might even have to stretch for the extra top row of apps. Just hold it a different way, perhaps.

Because various components have been reduced in size, the headphone socket has been moved to the bottom of the device, which comes with its pros and cons. On the plus side, your phone usually goes in your pocket nose first, which means the headphone cable has a clear run out to your ears.

On the downside, the jutting jack interferes with your hand when holding it ‘upright’. Not all apps will use the gyroscope to flip the screen 180-degrees, either, so you’ll have to get used to that.

The bottom-hugging stereo speakers have also been given a boost, the better to annoy old people on the bus as you rattle out Skream’s latest. Do your own iPhone 4S to iPhone 5 sound comparison and you’ll realise the sound is unquestionably fuller and deeper.

Then there’s the Lightening connector. In our testing, we didn’t find it any quicker for transferring content over a cable but we do prefer the new connector in terms of it being a) smaller and b) reversible.

At the time of writing, the Lightening-to-30-pin adapter wasn’t available – it sure ain’t in the box, and it’ll cost £25 on release – so we haven’t experienced how it will cope with existing docks and accessories but it’s safe to say, things could look ugly.

There are add-ons that simply won’t work with it, either – TomTom’s iPhone car kit, for example. It’s made us realise how many USB-to-30-pin cables we’ve amassed over the years and how, now, they’re all redundant, apart from servicing the new iPad and nostalgic clear outs.

iPhone 5: Screen

So, onto the screen; it’s still lovely and Retina; it now boasts 326ppi and a resolution of 1136x640; it’s equally as bright and slightly richer in colour. There’s space for a whole extra row of apps – woop! – and tasks can still be performed with one hand.

The main benefit is that you can just see more. Web pages are longer, movies are wider, though many we found from iTunes and YouTube still have to be stretched or cropped to fill the screen, the photo viewing area is bigger (just) and Apple’s own, optimised apps make good use of the extra space.

Non-optimised apps are letterboxed, which doesn’t feel right. Hopefully we’ll see a raft of updates soon. Both iTunes and the App Store have also had visual upgrades and look clean when you’re browsing, searching and splurging micropayments.

If you’re a long-time iPhone owner, you might find the elongation strange at first but you’ll soon wonder how you coped before, as going back to a 4S feels like watching your old portable bedroom TV. However, if you’ve had an extensive play with the Samsung S3, HTC One X or Nokia Lumia 900, you still might find it too titchy – it’s noticeably smaller, and that could be a sticking point for potential buyers.

So why didn’t Apple just make the screen even bigger? One theory in this reviewer’s mind is the impact of another device screen size before Christmas. If the iPad Mini was to launch, then it’d need to sit in a gap between the 9.7-inch iPad and 4-inch iPhone 5. Launching a phone with a huge 5-inch-plus screen could tread on the toes of what might be around the corner. Just a thought…

iPhone 5: Performance

Everything feels slightly slicker when navigating the phone. Apps appear to load quicker, video feels a touch smoother, video and image processing is definitely faster.

With the improved A6 processor now powering the visuals, our finger points straight at it, but it’s with new apps that we’ll really see the power of the chip take hold. Real Racing 3 (or any other A6-optimised game) wasn’t available when penning this review, so we’ll have to wait for developers to do their thing before witnessing any major power increase.

iPhone 5: Camera

The rear iSight camera remains impressive, taking great pictures in bright conditions. There’s a bigger virtual camera capture button and video stabilisation seems to have improved.

It now detects faces and auto-focuses in video and allows you to capture stills while taking video. The video-compression algorithm has also improved, reducing the file-size of footage without any discernible reduction in quality, and making for friendlier email attachments.

Low-light image capture improvement was also discussed in the Keynote but we still experienced a fair bit of grain in our testing. The major improvement is with the front camera, which has been upgraded to 720p video, making FaceTime and Skype chats much clearer. Still shots are captured at 1.2MP, so not exactly archive-worthy.

The new Panorama mode is intuitive and produces great results. It doesn’t capture in landscape orientation, which feels counter-intuitive, but the speed at which it processes and pops out a pretty, panoramic shot is impressive.

Though, even with the wider screen, you still have to zoom right in to see what you’ve captured. And while competing phones have had this feature for a while, if anything’s going to be the new Instagram over the coming months, this is it.

iPhone 5: iOS 6

The iPhone 5 comes with iOS 6 as standard. But, at this point it’s difficult to see where the unique differences are between it running on an iPhone 4S and iPhone 5. You can read our in-depth iOS 6 review but everything we’ve seen works on both.

Flyover, turn-by-turn navigation, Passbook, PhotoStream sharing, FaceTime over cellular, VIP Mailboxes, Facebook integration, Do Not Disturb, improved Siri, pre-determined text replies to phone calls, the list goes on.

Conceivably, this could deter iPhone 4S owners from upgrading, though if app developers take advantage of the upgraded processor and screen and launch more iPhone 5-specific content, their arms could be twisted. Not that the pre-sales figures suggest Apple has much to worry about...

iPhone 5: Maps

Apple Maps will divide opinion. Even with some nice features the search functionality seems hit and miss in terms of finding London locations. It displays more road names than place names and colour-coded roads have gone, so navigating to a specific point via pinch and zoom is trickier.

Then again, the 3D mapping, map rotation and Flyover features are all great. Maybe we’ll get used to it but, as it stands, we prefer the old Google Maps.

The extra screen length does give turn-by-turn Maps navigation – in portrait only – an advantage over the iPhone 4S. Obviously, you can fit more map on screen, with the direction tab sitting at the top, leaving a decent amount of space for the road you’re on and your surroundings.

Walking and bicycle routes can also be plotted. Voice directions are basic but clear, though it doesn’t seem to utilise its traffic feature to route you around black spots to your destination. It’s not bad for a free service.

iPhone 5: Passbook

Passbook is interesting. Retailers and businesses will need to sign up – for free, apparently – but once on board, you’ll be able to download flights, tickets, vouchers etc from them and store them in a digital wallet. It’s a neat idea, and could mean users don’t miss NFC, but as no UK outlets have signed up yet, we couldn’t test it, though we did enjoy the slick email-to-Passbook path.

iPhone 5: 4G

Nor, regrettably, could we test 4G. EE will be the first UK operator to offer a 4G package , which we’re hoping will be ready to rock imminently. We’ve already seen how fast a phone can operate on LTE (30Mbps+ on a HTC One X). Combined with the A6 processor, this should give an online speed change like no other.

Wireless spec improvements for iPhone 5 include HSPA+, DC-HSDPA and, finally, dual-band N Wi-Fi. When using our 5GHz home router, we experienced a better, more consistent signal. A standard 3G signal also seemed to react quicker with our tests putting an average of 2Mbps on download speeds. A case of the new DC-HSDPA kicking in.

iPhone 5: Battery

In our testing, real-world battery life doesn’t seem to have changed much since the iPhone 4S, which could be seen as a good thing considering the iPhone 5 is a more advanced product, but you’ll still need to charge it every night to give you enough juice for the next day.

You can watch a couple of films on a flight or listen to hours and hours of music on one charge, but talking and 3G surfing take a heavier toll, and 4G connectivity could be even more of a drain.

One very welcome improvement are the new EarPods, which come as standard. While we think you can get better cans for the £25 they cost as a separate purchase – check out our Apple EarPods review – it’s great to have a better audio experience straight out of the box.

Prices for the 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models are what we’ve come to expect from new smartphones; expensive. The iPhone remains pricier than its competitors, both as a standalone handset – you can get a 16GB Samsung Galaxy S3 for around £100 less than the equivalent iPhone on Amazon – and on contract.

iPhone 5: Verdict

So, what to make of this latest upgrade. There’s no denying that the iPhone 5 is a lovely thing, and the best iPhone to date. It could well be Apple’s best-selling unit ever.

But a lot has changed in a year, and the current crop of Android superphones – and the incoming Windows Phone 8 handsets – have closed the gap. For nearly every “new” feature announced at the Keynote, there was a Samsung, Android, Windows, Nokia, Sony or HTC fan saying “my phone already does that.”

Apple’s competitors never been closer in terms of quality, function and aesthetics and from your feedback on our social networks we know how many of you are jumping ship to phones with a bigger screen and more features.

Given that iPhone 4S users can upgrade to iOS 6 and do just about everything the iPhone 5 can do, and that Android users can get similarly impressive handsets for less dosh, we reckon the smart money won’t all be going on a new iPhone this year, even if the mass market can’t get enough of it. It’s good, very good. But it’s no longer the best around.

Windows Phone 8 OS - One of the things that set apart Nokia from other smartphones is its operating system. The two new smartphones are supported by Windows Phone 8. The gadget market seems to be more excited by the presence of new hottest gadgets. There are several big manufactures which contributed to compete the sophisticated gadgets. Some of them are Nokia and Blackberry. Here are some names, specs, features and releasing time for their gadgets:

1. Nokia Lumia 920

The rumored Nokia Lumia 920 will be the next generation of the Nokia Lumia 900 as the high end device. Rumored specifications include 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, 1GB RAM, 32GB internal storage, 1.3 megapixel front facing camera, and 4.5 inch HD display. Some speculations say that this device will include a PureView camera, but unlike the fabulous 808 PureView indications are that this will have an 8 megapixel one and not 41 megapixel. We will have to wait until Wednesday to see what the device actually contains. Unfortunately, it looks like the device won't be available until late October or November.

2. Nokia Lumia 820

The next rumor is about Nokia Lumia 820 looks to be Nokia's new mid-range WP8 device with a 4.3 inch display, 8GB storage and microSD card slot, 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, 1GB RAM, and camera similar to the Lumia 920. It may also have changeable rear covers, similar to the current Lumia 710 device. The other rumored feature of these two devices that it is the support for Qi charging technology. I had this on my Samsung Droid Charge with special back cover and still have my Energizer Qi charging pad.

The color options and bump up in specs, but some sites say that they left wondering if there is enough here to get customers to finally look at Windows Phone. Samsung already revealed their Windows Phone 8 high end device that is basically a Galaxy S III running Windows Phone 8. HTC is likely to make an announcement soon as well, they are guessing it will be something like an HTC One X with WP8. With a new Android Nexus, maybe more than one, likely appearing before November and the new iPhone being announced in a couple of weeks is there a compelling reason for the consumer to choose one of these Windows Phone 8 devices.

3. Nokia Glory

This generation is rumored to be working on a low-end phone powered by Windows Phone 7.8 operating system. This phone is expected to be a successor to Lumia 610. The device as of now is codenamed as Nokia Glory. Nokia is planning to bring this device to the customers across the globe quite soon. This phone is especially targeted at lower-end mobile phone customers who would be able to buy this phone at an affordable price tag. There is no information regarding the exact pricing and availability of this Windows based phone.

As per the sources, Nokia is less likely to unveil this lower-end phone along with the high-end Windows 8 based smartphones. There are some unofficial rumors suggesting the specifications of this device. According to unofficial sources this low-end phone will feature a screen display size of 4 inches even though there are no details regarding the screen resolution. The device is will have an 800 MHz processor and 256 MB RAM capacities.

It will be quite interesting to see whether this Windows Phone 7.8 phone in the making will outsell Lumia 610 with its comparatively better display size of 4 inches compared to 3.7 inch display found in 610. For those who are on the lookout for a Nokia smartphone with an efficient Windows operating system, Nokia Glory will come across as a viable option that won’t drain off the wallet either.

Nokia is associating with Microsoft in an effort to turn up their fortunes with the launch of Windows based smartphones. These windows based devices are designed to provide stiff competition for competitors such as Samsung and Apple. It is still not clear whether the codenamed Nokia Glory will be released with the same name or a different model name.

4. iPod Touch 5G

The Rumors

There are dozens of sites on the internet that forecast the release of the iPod Touch 5th Generation. Some sites even have a “why this needs to happen” explanation of their forecast. In all reality, trying to forecast the release of an Apple product is largely similar to trying to forecast the end of the world.

If there are end of the world theories, then there are certainly Apple product release theories as well. Some people claim that the product will be released along with the iPhone 5. There really is no basis as why Apple should release the two products simultaneously.

The Truth

Apple has not announced the release date of the 5th Generation iPod Touch. The closest we can hope for is for the company to announce the release a week earlier than the actual release date. So, if the release date will be in September, then the company would announce it sometime first week of September.

If you’re holding off on buying the iPod Touch 4G simply because the 5th Generation is believed to be right around the corner, then there really wouldn’t be any harm in waiting, unless of course you desperately need the newest multi-media device from Apple.

The Features

There are plenty of rumors on the features of the iPod Touch 5G. Some believe that it will have the A6 Chip and the iOS 6. Some believe that it will also have SIRI, the voice recognition software. Whether or not the device will have the A6 or the iOS 6, one thing is for sure. Apple will release a product that is certainly an improvement from the current product. It would not make any sense for the company to release a new product that did not make much of an improvement on the current products.

Samsung launches Windows 8 ATIV line with new smartphone, three tablets.

Samsung announced an ambitious line of Windows 8 mobile devices using the ATIV name on Wednesday, including an ATIV S smartphone with a 4.8-in. HD display and three tablet PCs.

The lineup, unveiled in Berlin, Germany during a webcast, also includes an ATIV Tab that runs Windows RT and two Windows 8 x86 tablets that have magnetically attachable keyboards called the ATIV Smart PC and the ATIV Smart PC Pro.

The company didn't offer pricing or availability information.

Samsung also showed off an array of diverse products atop the Android-powered Galaxy line at the event, announced a slightly larger Galaxy Note II, and unveiled a Galaxy Camera that works over cellular networks and Wi-Fi.

Samsung said it wants to stay ahead of the pack of mobile device manufacturers, and sees Windows 8 products as a way to do so.

"We have an unrivaled range of products in the Windows 8 environment," said Damian Cusick, general manager of Samsung UK. "The Samsung ATIV line-up of Windows 8 products is simple, powerful and beautiful."

The ATIV Smart PC Pro, with an 11.6-in. touchscreen and an Intel Core i5 processor, targets professionals, Cusick noted. He also called attention to the Windows RT tablet, the ATIV Tab with pre-installed Office productivity applications to allow Office and Word document sharing. "Nothing will change from the PC documents you share with co-workers," he said.

The ATIV S smartphone is also Office compatible, with "various Windows-based content that [runs] in an optimized environment," he added.

All four Windows ATIV devices "blend the device and content ecosystem perfectly...so [users] can get things done," he said.

The ATIV S smartphone has a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and will work over HSPA networks like those offered by T-Mobile USA and AT&T.

The ATIV Tab offers a 10.1-in display and an 8,200 mAh battery, which is at the high end of tablet batteries.

The ATIV Tab runs Windows RT.

The ATIV Smart PC and Smart PC Pro are equipped with a digital stylus, called the S Pen, that Samsung has updated from its original appearance with the Galaxy Note. It now has 1,024 levels of pressure sensitivity and is slightly thicker.

Both are 11.6-in. Tablets, and each has a detachable keyboard dock that allows it to be used as either a clamshell laptop PC or a tablet PC. The Smart PC has a battery life of 13.5 hours, while the Smart PC Pro runs up to eight hours.

The Galaxy Note II, which ships in October globally, has a 5.5-in. display, larger than the original 5.3-in. display, and will come with redesigned S Pen. Its larger screen stays in the same sized body, however, although the increase in screen size bumps it up slightly to a 16:9 aspect ratio.

The ATIV Smart PC is slightly thinner and lighter than the Smart PC Pro. The Smart PC is 11.96 x 7.5 x .38 inches and weighs 26.4 ounces. The Smart PC Pro has the same height and width but is .46-inches thick and weighs 31.2 ounces. The ATIV Tab is 10.4 x 6.6 x .35 inches and 20.1 ounces. The ATIV S smartphone is 5.4 x 2.8 x .34 inches and weighs 4.7 ounces.

Google Nexus Released in June. Rumor?

The latest rumors said that Google’s Nexus tablet will reportedly ship in June with an initial volume of 600,000 units per month. Digitimes stated the tablet (which is developed incollaboration with ASUS) is ready to be launched in July. DigiTimes notes that Google initially wanted to release the Nexus tablet in May, but the developers did not come with a satisfactory design and the cost was a little bit high than expected.

Google had to make some modifications and that’s why the launch of the tablet was delayed till July. Google’s hopes for its new device are very high and people expect that the shipments will reach 2.5 million units by the end of the year. Rumor has it that Google’s will be packed with NVIDIA’s quad-core Tegra 3 CPU and could have a very small price, of $199. Most rumors say that the device will be unveiled on June 27th when Google’s annual I/O conference will take place.

It looks like everyone is following Amazon’s steps and want to produce cheaper tablets as Google Nexus is meant to be a direct rival for Kindle Fire in both size and price. Also, it is rumored that Apple will release a tablet around 7.85 inches called iPad Mini. Plus, there is also the 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab, so the affordable 7-inch market will be very crowded. There will come a time when almost everybody will own one of these devices, even more than one.

Probably, the Google Nexus Tab will feature Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. However, it seems that the operating system will be upgraded this year (probably in November), so Google can sell its tablet with Android 5.0

The earliest has been reported by Christian Post on April 6, 2012. It said that the rumor release for the upcoming 7-inch Google Nexus tablet has reportedly been set back until July, according to tech site 9to5Google.

The device was originally expected to debut in May, however that date was only a previous rumor that was never officially confirmed by the company.

The news of a July release comes after The Verge published this report earlier today, showing the reasons for the delay.

"The Mountain View team plans to make some design changes and hopes to lower the price from $249," wrote the site. "The tablet, made in partnership with Taiwan's Asustek Computer, currently comes with a 7-inch screen, an Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core processor, and is Wi-Fi only."

The tablet will also include Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich and Google reportedly hopes to lower the price down into the $149-$199 range in order to better compete with the low-end tablet market leader, the Amazon Kindle Fire.

Other reports surfaced yesterday regarding Apple's rumored iPad mini. The company is reportedly testing a 7.85-inch iPad in its labs, according to Daring Fireball's John Gruber, who revealed the information in a recent podcast.

Gruber was a guest on a Talk Show podcast hosted by Dan Benjamin, who asked him if he thought a 7.85-inch iPad would ever be released. His answer was quite surprising.

"Well, I don't know," said Gruber. "What I do know is that they have one in the lab … a 7.85-inch iPad that runs at 1024 x 768."

He also described this device's capabilities in comparison to its larger predecessors. "It's just like the 9.7-inch iPad shrunk down a little bit," he added. "Apps wouldn't need to be recompiled or redesigned to work optimally on it. It's just the iPad smaller."

According the Mac Rumors, Gruber is reliable source for information pertaining to Apple and its products. He also noted that the company has many products that enter into testing that never actually make it into the open market.

A lengthy list for sure and pretty great for the most part. In addition to plenty of extra screen estate, resolution and processing power, the Samsung I9300 Galaxy S III brings a new, much larger battery, the futuristic sounding eye-tracking technology, and also hides several cool software tricks up its sleeve.

In fact, of all the rumored goodies, the non-PenTile screen and the 12 megapixel camera are the only ones which didn't make the cut, but we are not even sure you should feel too sorry about that. The subpixel density is still on par with what the S II offered, while the camera got a whole new sensor, thus it might still turn out to be a nice upgrade.

Samsung Releases Ice Cream Sandwich Upgrade List

Congratulation! Those who are Samsung phone and tablet users can now enjoy the new update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with a couple of notable exceptions. The users can see which devices are on the list to receive the latest flavor of Android.

As Daniel Ionescu (PCW) reported that the latest series of Samsung Android phones will be graced with Android 4.0, if you have a Galaxy S, an original 7-inch Galaxy Tab or if you are a T-Mobile customer, you may be out of luck.

Samsung posted on its support pages a comprehensive list of specifics for the Ice Cream Sandwich update in the U.S., saying it is in close communication with both Google and carriers to upgrade devices to Android 4.0 “as quickly and as smoothly as possible.”

On AT&T, Android Ice Cream Sandwich is coming for the Galaxy S II, S II Skyrocket, the Galaxy Note, Glide, Nexus S and the 8.9-inch Galaxy Tab. For Sprint, the Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch is set to get the update, while Ice Cream Sandwich for the Nexus S 4G is already available.

For AT&T subscribers, the Galaxy S II, Galaxy S II Skyrocket, Captivate Glide, and Nexus S smartphones are listed, as is the Galaxy Tab 8.9 tablet. The half-phone/half-tablet Galaxy Note is on the list as well.

Verizon customers who own the Galaxy Tab 10.1 or the Galaxy Tab 7.7 tablet are also destined for Ice Cream Sandwich.

The ICS update is already available for Sprint subscribers who own the Nexus S 4G, while those with the Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch are still on the waiting list.

Users of the Wi-Fi-only versions of the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus, Galaxy Tab 8.9, and Galaxy Tab 10.1 are due for the latest version of Google's mobile operating system.

But T-Mobile customers are in limbo, with no specific devices listed as of yet. Samsung reports that it's been in touch with T-Mobile to make sure eligible devices receive Ice Cream Sandwich in the coming months and will provide more details when available.

Hot Gadgets Rumors 2012: Apple iPad 3. Release Date, Specs And Price.

Apple always knows what its customers need. It always launches cool hot advanced gadgets which people wants. Apple users are always satisfied with the great feature for each gadget they get. There has been many rumors said that iPad 3 is coming soon after launching iPad 2. Some says that it will have retina display some explains it will have double battery capacity as iPad 2. While other rumors also show that it will have a better processor may be A6 quad-core processor will be introduced in this amazing tablet.

Many expert leaked debug screenshots of what it claimed was proof of both that fancy new A6 processor and global 4G LTE, and Japanese blog Macotakara reported similar network details around the same time. Bringing LTE to the iPad before the iPhone would make sense, because the iPad's larger battery can handle the 4G drain.

Siri
Siri, the voice-command personal assistant, which helps a user get things done, has grown to become the most popular feature of iPhone 4S. The iPad 3 is rumored to come with an upgraded version of the voice command technology which will have additional languages including Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Italian and Spanish.

By using electronic pen or 'stylus' could give better precision when used with iOS devices - that all pack capacitive touchscreens. Word is the heat will stop the end of the pen from wearing out, while the pen itself could possibly be docked in the iPhone or iPad to charge.

Crytek have since refuted the claims, but BGR now say that they have it on good authority from a source “with knowledge of Microsoft’s plans within the company’s Entertainment and Devices Division” that the Xbox 720 will be announced at E3 2012.

It is equipped with 14-inch panel having a resolution of 1,366-by-768 pixels. It has brightness adjustment button for 16 level brightness and Photo frame tilt stand adjustments for comfort viewing.

As Notebook Review (www.notebookreview.com) said that the monitor works best when display static content - toolbars, text-heavy websites, emails and other long form content such as writing or reading. It falls down a bit when it comes to moving content, though. You'll notice some tearing when rapidly moving your cursor around, and when scrolling through websites you'll see the screen flash and jump. Likewise, some video works great with the monitor - lower resolution YouTube videos are fine, as long as you don't fullscreen the embeds.

Rumors: OLED Technology For TV

What is an OLED TV?

An OLED TV screen is a TV which uses a new display high technology called OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diodes). OLED technology presents a brighter screen, more efficient, thinner and feature better refresh rates and contrast than either LCD or Plasma.

OLED Technology

OLEDs are perfectly designed by placing thin films of organic (carbon based) materials between two conductors. When electrical current is applied, a bright light is emitted. The OLED materials emit light and do not require a backlight (unlike LCDs). Each pixel is a small light-emitting diode, in fact. OLED TV panels offers several advantages over LCDs:

Faster refresh rate, better contrast and better color reproduction
Thickness: the LG's EL9500 for example is just 1.7mm thick. We've seen prototypes of OLED televisions that are merely 0.3mm thick!
Better viewing angle - almost 180 degrees
Greener: OLEDs draw less power, and contain no bad metals
OLED panels can potentially be made flexible and/or transparent.

LG's 55" OLED TV

LG officially announced their first real OLED TV, the 55" 55EM9600, in December 2011. This is a Full-HD panel that features 100,000,000:1 contrast ratio and fast response time (1,000 times faster than LCD according to LG). The panel is only 4mm thick, and the whole TV weighs just 7.5Kg.

The TV is based on LG Display's Oxide-TFT white-OLED with color filters (RGBW, more on this below) OLED panel. We do not know the release date or price yet (although DisplaySearch estimates that it will cost $8,000 and be released in 3Q 2012). The 55EM9600 will be officially unveiled at CES 2012 and is expected to ship by July 2012.

Sony 11" XEL-1 OLED TV

Sony was the pioneer of OLED TV by launching Sony's XEL-1 back in December 2007. The XEL-1 was actually more of a technology prototype than a commercial set - it's a small TV (11"). This TV was expensive (around 2,500$) and was only produced in small quantities. It has great picture quality, colors and contrast.

LG 15" EL9500

LG's first OLED TV was actually the 15" EL9500 15". Like Sony's XEL-1, this was more of a technology demonstration, as the price was very high for a 15" display (around $2600 in Korea and €1,999 in Europe). The EL9500 features 1366 x 768 resolution,a contrast ratio of 100,000:1 and it's only 1.7mm thick.

True-OLED vs WOLED-CF

The basic OLED TV design (called a "True-OLED" TV) uses 3 color OLED sub-pixels (Red, Green and Blue) to create each 'pixel'. But some companies are using a different archicture, called WOLED-CF which uses four white OLED subpixels with color filters on top (RBG and W). This is also called a RGBW design.

Kodak developed the WOLED-CF technology and it should make the OLED panel easier to make. However it will also be less efficient. LG Display's OLED TVs which will be released in 2012 will be based on this design.

These TVs are amazing, but the price will be high as high as their technology. They will only be produced in small quantities (tens of thousands of units per month).

Hopefully the market reaction to these new premium TVs will be good, and both Samsung and LG will start to mass produce these TVs - which will bring the cost down dramatically. This is expected to happen during 2013-2014. Other companies (such as Toshiba, Panasonic and Sony) are expected to start producing OLED TVs too in the coming years.

LG has officially announced a 55" OLED TV and it is expected to launch at around July 2012. Sony is currently focused on professional OLED monitors (such as the $30,000 25" BVM-E250), and has no plans to start producing consumer TVs.

Officially, Panasonic does not have plans yet, but it is reportedly building a pilot 8.5-Gen OLED plant for R&D purposes.

AU Optronics have also shown some OLED TV prototypes, the latest being a 32" Oxide-TFT panel.

While DuPont don’t want to be left in this competition, they announced that a leading OLED maker has licensed their nozzle-printing technology in an effort to make cheaper, printable OLED TV panels.
