Dell's Latitude Z: world’s first laptop with wireless docking and inductive charging

Dell's latest addition to its Latitude series of laptops, the Latitude Z, has a number of ‘firsts’ the company is hoping will convince consumers to choose it over a plethora of other brands and models. Dell says its Latitude Z is the world's first 16-inch laptop that is less than an inch thick and also the first laptop with wireless docking and inductive charging (wireless power - no more cords to trip over or lose). The inclusion of Dell’s EdgeTouch allows users to operate commonly used applications and media controls through a touch interface on the screen’s bezel, while Dell’s Latitude ON technology delivers instant, interactive access to email, the Web, contacts, attachments and calendars.

The Latitude Z weighs 4.5lbs and has two solid state drives, which lets users run two operating systems, or back up one drive to another, among other uses. It has a quality auto-focus 2MP camera and good speakers, which make it ideal as a phone replacement for Skype calls, and higher quality video conferencing.

It comes standard with a four-cell battery, a spacious multi-touch touchpad, silky-touch backlit keyboard, high-definition (1600x900) WLED display, and is finished in Black Cherry. A two megapixel camera featuring Dell Capture technology allows users to copy documents scan and save business cards to Microsoft Outlook contacts.

The Dell FaceAware! Lock-Out software automatically locks out other users when a user leaves the laptop, and it even blanks out the screen when you look away to protect your sensitive information. For that extra touch of security, the Latitude Z also has a GPS location device built-in. In addition, the Latitude Z is available with WLAN, Bluetooth and optional 3G WWAN mobile broadband.

Dell says its lightweight, travel-friendly design extends to the Z's power adapter, optional accessories and external optical drive. Travelers can also choose from designer bags by Cole Haan and Timbuck2 to protect the laptop in transit.

The company claims Latitude ON represents the convergence of laptop productivity with 'instant on’ convenience and multi-day battery life in idle mode. Available on the Latitude Z, E4200 and E4300, it includes a sub-processor and sub-operating system that delivers instant access to email and Web and other functions, including: access to IMAP, POP, Novell Groupwise or Microsoft Exchange 2003 email.

The Citrix Receiver allows IT administrators to ensure remote secure access similar to a thin client, it has strong password requirements and supports virtual private network (VPN) functionality. Another feature is its ability to read .doc, .xls, .ppt and .pdf documents.

Latitude ON is available around the world and is a standard feature on the Latitude Z and a US$199 optional upgrade on the Latitude E4200 and E4300.

The Latitude Z is available in Europe and Asia, as well as Canada and the U.S., starting at US$1,999. More details are available online.

Gajar Ka Halwa literally means Carrot Sweet/Halwa. Juicy Carrots are first shredded and pan fried on a low flame until they turn into a rich color and milk and sugar are added to make this mouth-watering delicacy. When served hot, Gajar Ka Halwa can melt in your mouth and tastes best when served with Vanilla ice-cream. Gajar ka Halwa is a popular choice of winter in India and Pakistan.

Ingredients

Carrots - 10 long (finely shredded)
Clarified Butter/Ghee - 1 tbs
Milk - 1.5 cups
Sugar - 1 cup/or more according to preference
Mixed nuts (almonds, cashews, pistachios, raisins) - handful chopped (for garnish)

How to make Gajar Ka Halwa

Heat a deep pan/skillet. Add a tablespoon of clarified butter/ghee and let it melt.

Add the shredded carrot and saute (approx 15 mins.) on a low flame until the carrot changes color to a caramelized color/light brown. Take care not to burn the carrot. The raw smell should also disappear by now.

Add sugar and mix well.

Add Milk and allow to boil until the mixture begins to thicken. Mix thoroughly until Milk evaporates completely.

Remove from stove. Garnish with mixed nuts.

Serve Hot with Vanilla Ice-cream.

The muscle in our mouths used to manipulate food for chewing and swallowing is also of course the primary organ of taste. Yet while our animal counterparts can’t use their tongues for its other main function in humans – speech – many creatures put them to other uses that might leave you tongue-tied.

On the tip of its gluey tongue: Chameleon

The chameleon possesses a prehensile tongue adapted for rapidly striking prey that strays within striking distance. This remarkably long tongue can be twice the chameleon’s own body length and extends out faster than the human eye can follow, hitting prey in about 30 thousandths of a second. Usain Bolt, keep dreaming. The tip of this elastic tongue is a muscular, club-like structure covered in thick mucus that forms a suction cup. Once the tip sticks to a prey insect, the tongue is quickly drawn back into the mouth. Gulp.

Not tongue in cheek about eating ants: Anteater

If you thought the chameleon had a big tongue, check out the giant anteater’s, which can reach two feet (60 cm) in length. The anteater coats its tongue in sticky saliva during feeding, allowing it to ensnare ants, and can rapidly flick its tongue from its mouth up to 150 times per minute. After breaking into insect colonies and tree trunks using their long sharp claws, anteaters employ their tongues to collect eggs, larvae and adult insects, a few thousand of which they can guzzle in just minutes. Sniffing with a forked tongue: Snake

Instead of using their tongues to munch on prey, snakes use them to sniff prey out. Smell is a snake’s means of tracking its victims: its forked tongue is used to collect airborne particles that are then passed onto special organs in the mouth for analysis. It all sounds very scientific. The fork in the tongue gives the snake a sort of directional sense of both smell and taste, and by constantly keeping its tongue in motion, snakes can determine the presence of other animals in their local environment. Another beast with a beast of a tongue, the giraffe can extend its 18 inch (45 cm) mouth muscle to clean off bugs from its face or to feed. The specially adapted tongue is extremely tough to cope with the vicious tree thorns that are part of the giraffe’s diet. When removed from their natural environment and kept in captivity, giraffes show abnormal behaviours due to instinctive tendencies towards suckling the milk of their mothers – hence their excessive tongue lolling and licking of nearby objects. Awww.

Cat got your tongue: Housecat

Cats use their tongues to clean their bodies, and seem to do a much better job of it than dogs, which use theirs for the same purpose. The rows of hooked, backwards-facing spines on a cat’s tongue known as papillae act like the bristles of a hairbrush to help clean and detangle fur, so that licking means grooming. This probably makes a cat’s tongue far more vital to its wellbeing than ours are to us. When was the last time you used your tongue for that just-stepped-out-of-the-salon look? Don’t answer that.

BMW to release 3 Series hatch similar to 5 Series GT

Wagons are apparently so outre that we're now seeing mish-mash vehicles like crossovers hiding the truth that, at their core, they're just wagons. BMW is no stranger to this – witness the recent 5 Series GT. Looking to build on the Grand Turismo variants of its wares, BMW is reportedly developing a 3 Series GT, expected to launch for 2011. The details haven't changed since the last time we posted about this vehicle, but BMW is nodding its corporate head that ja, there will be such a car.

The 335 Grand Turismo will bridge the gap between the 3 and 5 Series cars, a narrow one at that. The tailgate should be a two-position affair, like the 5er, and it's possible that four- and five-place configurations may be offered. If it happens, diesel and gasoline engines are expected, though any M3 version is probably not going to happen. Why this might be any more successful against such competition as the Audi A4 Avant than would a traditional 3 Series wagon is a mystery, but maybe BMW has struck on the magic formula that makes ungainly cars a hot commodity.
