Hello. I hope this finds you all doing well. This is just to let folks know that I have consigned some of my X:WP art collection to ComicLink.com. These will appear in their online auctions over time. There are two comic book cover paintings in the auction starting March 13th:

A large group of my non-Xena art, mostly Wonder Woman original art is being auctioned as well. Some of Christopher Moeller's fully painted JLA: A League of One project is listed in the March 13th auction, and various lots from that project will be placed in auctions over time (I had the entire painted book project).

In the current auction is a John Byrne piece that he did for the cover of Previews and was subsequently used for a trading card. A painting of Spawn's Angela done by Terese Nielsen is also in the current auction which closes March 5th.

Warner Brothers Visit 3/? Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

The entire second floor of the Warner Brothers Archive exhibits were of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Harry Potter related items. I have a lot of photos from this floor. Again, forgive glare from display cases and glass framing.

Inscribed Items from the Collection

I have a few items that are inscribed, not just signed by Lucy Lawless. I really cherish these because they have so much personality. The first two are fun because she clearly spent some time writing on the posters.

One of the first MCA TV Promo posters announcing the new television series, Xena: Warrior Princess. Is it just me, or does that sword look a little bent? Inscription:

"Teach your daughters the only ambition having is one day becoming a happy, mobile old lady! All love, Lucy Lawless, Xena Warrior Princess, New Xenaland, 11/96."

A theatre promo poster promoting Lucy Lawless' stint as "Rizzo" in GREASE! No date on the poster but her run was in the fall of 1997. I got it at the "Broadway Cares" event, an annual fundraiser for AIDS organizations in New York City, where I was visiting at the time. Inscription:

"Lucy Lawless, ALL BAD GIRLS GO TO HEAVEN!"

A Cautionary Tale about UV Exposure

Hello. This post is a small example about the perils of UV exposure on items you may be hoping to keep for the long term. Below is a special double-sided card from the Herc/Xena CCG published by Wizards of the Coast in 1998. The cards were signed by both actors in black Sharpie and housed in this heavy card holder. Nice, right? This is #42 of an edition of 100 and is so marked on the card holder base. Also, "42 of 100" can be seen clearly on both sides of the card, written in gold paint pen. But the Sharpie signatures? Look hard. You will see some aspects of signatures, now very ghostly and essentially gone. I left the card in the special card holder it came in, which was a mistake.

If you display any collectibles that may receive sun exposure of any kind, consider investing in treated glass or plexiglass. It's more expensive, but worth it.

Scott Sava's Xena: Warrior Princess Art

I found Scott Sava and his work at Comic-Con originally (oh, so long ago). These days, you can find him on a lot of art sites like Deviant Art and he has a busy Etsy shop, too. If you are a fan of portraiture, Scott's work really appeals. Also, he is a really great guy, fun to talk to, passionate about art. But wait, he has his own animation studio as well! In this era of digital art, it is incredibly gratifying to find physical art. Over the years I have collected a handful of Scott's Xena-related pieces:

Callisto, in all of her craziness.

Gabrielle, in a shorter BGSB.

Xena in her main costume, though a little bit darker here (I find that costume looks lighter or darker in an episode. This one is the most recent one I bought.

Here's the first Xena painting of Scott's I bought. He gave me the preliminary sketch as well, so I framed them together. The prelim wasn't a centered on the paper as the painting, so it was hard to align them side by side, still I like how this looks. I love the chakram as background in this one. Anyone else find Xena art that you have liked?

The convention has been moved to December and attending tickets opened up, so I grabbed a couple of General Admission tickets for me and my favorite Xenite. Xena Swords and the Quilt I Made for My Mom

This is really not related to anything, but I thought the photo was nice. Nice because Xena swords look nice pretty much wherever you put them and nice because that's the quilt I had made my Mom a number of years ago. It resides draped over that chair, a favorite book reading spot of mine. When my Mom passed away a few years ago and my siblings and I were going through the house, sorting things in that Keep-Donate-Trash sort of way, I came across the quilt and claimed it. This is how we were doing it, as we found things we thought we might want, we declared it out loud, "I want this __________." And what an agreeable group we were in our shared grief (this surprised me because we fought like cats and dogs as kids and teenagers). So, I got back the quilt I had made my Mom and I also got my Dad's black cowboy boots (which are technically too big for me, but that hasn't stopped me from wearing them -- sometimes).

I really enjoyed making it and my mother loved it's wild eye-popping colors. Her own quilts tended to be composed of mostly pastel fabrics while I embraced jewel-tone batiks and hand-dyes with a fervor. My father used it too -- as a lap warmer when he went for his 3-times-a-week dialysis sessions. Handmade quilts are quite durable things; a well-made quilt of cotton fabrics, cotton batting, and cotton thread can be expected to survive 100 years or more -- they are instant family heirlooms. So this quilt is youngish, relatively speaking; it has a lot of time ahead of it.

I see these Xena swords as heirlooms as well. They are incredibly well-made, even the foam and resin versions. Foam doesn't have a long lifetime, of course, but solid resin and metal will last the test of time. Technically, the quilt is pretty much the same age as these production swords. I think the swords will last longer, given their more durable composition, but I love the idea of appreciating good craftsmanship that is both attractive/desirable and made to last. And, as I have been in possession of these for a time that can legitimately be measured in decades, these are items to be handed down as much as they are to be bought and sold. Too sentimental for you? I hear you; I just disagree.

1999 Original Comic Book Art Xena: Lesbian Princess

Here is the original art for an action-filled splash page from Topps' X:WP comic book #0. Xena looks more like Lawless than we see in later issues of comic books.

It's a great splash page, composed to give us intense action vignette's through out. There's that little vertical rectangle of Xena seeing Gab in danger even with her Gabwhacker in use. That zombie's head that Xena separates from it's body with such force it looks like it will fly up and out of the page. Xena's sword is also poised to pierce the 4th wall and enter our space. Argo is having NONE of it and there is another zombie coming through on the lower right, literally foreshadowed. Aaron Lopresti is terrific at action sequences.

And little did we know, the title is actually Xena: Lesbian Princess on this 2 page spread:

I give you the labeling in full in the photo below. This is Lopresti's handwriting. Given this was pretty early on in the show's run, I was surprised to see this on the art board. Fandom was fervently divided between those who saw the "subtext" of a lesbian relationship between Xena and Gabrielle and those who didn't. The online subtext wars were pretty intense, so much so that some fans retreated to a private email list where new members were vetted by people on the list. And, because there were several instances where men hid behind female online personas, one of the vetting rules was that you had to have met the person in the physical world. Straight men pretending to be lesbians was a bizarre thing for most of us in this nascent neophyte internet world. Geez, I digressed again. But that is the context of what popped into my head when I saw the text on the piece.

Time Warp: 1998 Burbank H/X Convention with Props Display

I am continuing to excavate my Xena Stuff archive, though embarrassingly disorganized mess may be a better description. Here are a few photos of the props display that was set up in the Burbank Hilton parking lot during the Herc/Xena Convention there in 1998. For some reason, MCA Universal thought there would be lots of kids at one of these conventions, so there was a castle bounce house. A lot of other items you see in this photo were meant for climbing on or over. I remember walking over there with a friend and immediately feeling like I was too old for the space, until we found the props display. And that's me in the center of the shot, I don't know why, maybe for scale?

The display case was essentially set up in the perfect direction if you were a solar panel. Photos were tough to get clearly; I made several attempts. In this photo you can see a Horde Axe, a Chakram, and a Breast Dagger, with a lovely scalloped-shaped shadow thanks to the awning.

Two swords, Callisto's and Xena's plus a scroll in the center. This photo and two below are all shots of the same display case, just trying to photograph the contents more clearly. I thought the crushed maroon velvet should be rethought: something darker would have had more contrast.

In this photo you can see more of the entire display, plus that's me with the 1997 auction chakram in my hand, for comparison. This was during the time when people constantly asked me to bring that chakram so they could see it, so I almost always had a book bag on my shoulder with that chakram inside. And oh look: I have a waist! How I've missed you!

Here's a group shot of some of the Southern California Xenites I hung out with (a lot!). Sorry for the not so clear photo, I was too lazy to get out the flatbed scanner, so this is an iPhone photo. All I can say here is that this was 23 years ago and we all look fabulous.

X:WP in a Pandemic: Recently Zoomed with a few Xena Collectors

Is "Zoomed" an actual verb?

Recently, I got out a few things to show to some interested collectors. It was a combination of a show and tell, and general Xena Stuff chat, though long conversations may be a better description. It's been quite a while since I had gotten some of these things out for viewing, and for a few items, it's been many years. There are older photos of these items elsewhere in this blog (honestly, there is nothing new to see here, move along, move along).

It was nice for me to see these things in the eyes of newer collectors. I collected these items between 1997-2003, which is quite a while ago, so they've had time to "mature" for me.

Here are two collected production costumes on mannequins. Three Gabwackers are next to the BGSB costume -- one is a little shorter than the other two and has a much lighter colored center grip. One is signed by Renee O'Connor from that time when we stalked her to a performance as Lady Macbeth with Shakespeare By the Sea (because you know, Xenites did that kind of thing).

These are the two Creation auction chakrams, one in the plexiglass case I had made in 1997 and one in a customized Icons faux-rock holder (an Icons employee made it and sent it to me, which was very kind).

This library table is the same one I used to build my first "Xena Shrine" back in 1997 and later iterations, only now it's located in my library, so now it seems legit. In previous versions, this table usually held a wider variety of items, but these days it's just chakrams and Xena swords. Some costumes reside in those acid-free archival boxes under the table (unsightly, I know, but reasonably safe).

This is sort of a sideways view of a Xena costume's armored pieces plus the pair of boots. Not clearly seen in this view is the leather dress, but you can see part of it just to the right of the chair; it's lying on the back of a black leather sofa which tends to make everything look dark. On the floor in the background is a recent comic book cover original art piece and a framed Hudson Leick signed TV Guide X:WP episode art.

I am looking forward to more conversations because I enjoyed this so much. It also feels a little like waking up after a long hibernation (that's a metaphor, I don't actually know what hibernation feels like). But, it has reminded me why I became interested in X:WP in the first place: other people who share the same interest.

And another question that I am pondering is whether I would have reached out if there hadn't been a pandemic that has forced me to use technology that I might have ignored otherwise. My teaching was forced online (essentially overnight, but from a Wednesday on campus to online the following Monday) last March, right in the middle of the semester. I had to learn how to lecture and record in Zoom, and later YouTube. Being forced to use technology for lecturing has made it possible to visit with family and friends as well as meet other collectors even though we are geographically separated. I'll call that a silver lining.

I am hoping to get vaccinated this Spring with the intention of returning to the classroom in the Fall. This week I found out from my department Chair that I'm the only adjunct faculty member who has indicated that I wanted to be in the classroom in the Fall. Everyone else said they would teach online only. Maybe I am being overly optimistic. And yet, I am optimistic about the future. People are getting vaccinated and we will emerge from this. I hope this finds you well and navigating this current and weird pandemic space-time continuum.

Xena Chakram Yin-Yang Jacket

Sometime in late 1999 I took beginner quilt classes with my good friend LeeAnne. We had talked for years about wanting to know how to quilt, and suddenly we had the opportunity to do so. We haven't stopped quilting since, even this week, we met up in a Zoom session with two other quilter friends (we are all biotech research scientists who quilt). Even for just the hour that I was connected, it was really great to chat and hear everyone's sewing machines going.

Sometime in the early 00's I took a Thread Painting class with Libby Lehman at an Empty Spools Seminar that was held at the Asilomar Conference Grounds in Pacific Grove. Awesome location right on the beach, with condo accommodations and great food in the conference center. A whole week to just sew! Heaven. Libby Lehman's "Thread Painting" technique earned her a quilt spot in the 100 Best Quilts in the U.S. as chosen by the National Quilt Museum. Check out her quilts "Joyride" and "Escapade" were two that I really admire and are really thread painted. The class with Libby made me less afraid to use thread for more than piecing and quilting. When I got home I knew I wanted to try and make something with a chakram design. And while isn't thread painting, this is the result: a denim jacket with one side of the original chakram design paired with a wildly colored yin yang:

The fabrics are all hand dyes with the two yin yang fabrics from a man who made sequence-dyed fabrics (he started with white fabric, then dyed, re-dyed, painted, stamped, and resisted until he got what he wanted). His name is Mr. Aspidistra (I have been looking for him for a while, but he was elderly back than and may not be around any longer). At $50/yard, I bought small pieces from him whenever I found him at Road to California, an enormous quilt show that occurs in January (though not this year).

I used reverse applique, fused fabric, and metallic threads to make this design. And it was a lot of fun, actually. I used a tight satin stitch for all of the edges. And you can see from this close up I found a batik that I thought approximated Paua shell colors.

I liked Mr. Aspidistra's black and copper fabric so much and thought it evoked Xena's main costume. This close up shows how the variegated metallic thread I was using created a quasi-chakram motif along the edge. This was unexpected.

Here is the flip side of the yin yang. The fuchsia fabric is WILD, and while is some gold and silver on the surface, I was looking for high contrast with the black/copper fabric. That was certainly achieved. You can't miss me in a large crowd when I'm wearing this jacket.

With this shot of the inside of the jacket, now you can see that I made the yin-yang chakram piece before placing it on the jacket. It would have been hard to manipulate the chakram and the jacket together in my sewing machine. I used a paper foundation stabilizer as the backing while I sewed the design pieces together, tearing it away when I was done. The stabilizer would have stiffened the jacket, and being paper, it would have disintegrated in the first wash, and likely become lumps behind the design.

This is a close-up of the top inside and if you look closely, you can see spots of fuchsia coming through the denim. Red and pink dyes are "gifts that keep on giving" so when I do wash the jacket (by itself!) I use a detergent called Synthrapol, which sequesters dye particles so that they don't re-deposit somewhere else on the fabric/quilt/jacket. But there is still fuchsia dye discharging through the denim, so this is notice to wear a dark shirt whenever I wear this jacket. And I do wear it, still.

I am going through some old boxes in the upstairs Xena Room closet and found the original flyer sent to me by Creation in mid-1996. I was a member of the X-Files Fan Club back then, organized by Creation's Sharon Delaney, who eventually did the Hercules and the Xena Fan Clubs (though Xena dominated her job at one point, I think). I'm posting the back of this original flyer, too, for a Creation Fan Holiday Boutique at the Burbank Hilton/Marriott. After almost exactly 25 years, I am surprised I found this to be in such perfect condition (it was folded into thirds with the X-Files newsletter and mailed to me in a business-sized envelope.

Tuckerizations: An Unusual Collection

Tuckerization "is the act of using a person's name in an original story as an in-joke (e.g. Mount Kirby in Kurt Busiek's Astro City comics). The term is derived from Wilson Tucker, an American science fiction writer and fanzine editor, who made a practice of using his friends' names for minor characters in his stories.

For example, Harry Harrison's To the Stars character: "Old Lundwall, who commands the Sverige, should have retired a decade ago, but he is still the best there is." Sam J Lundwall is a well-known Swedish science fiction publisher and writer, as well as the godfather of Harrison's daughter.

A Tuckerization can also be the use of a person's character or personal attributes with a new name as an in-joke, such as Ian Arnstein in S.M. Stirling's Island in the Sea of Time trilogy, clearly modeled on his good friend Harry Turtledove, albeit an alternate history Turtledove. Many science fiction authors auction off Tuckerizations at science fiction conventions with the proceeds going to charity."

Last night, I finished Tracy Chevalier's latest novel, A Single Thread, that had a Tuckerization revealed in the Author's Acknowledgments at the back of the book: "Finally, I would like to thank Keith Bain for the use of his name. Keith bought the privilege of having a character named after him at an auction to raise funds for Freedom from Torture, an admirable UK charity that provides treatment and rehabilitation for survivors of torture. Keith took a generous gamble on me and A Single Thread; I hope he feels he won."

OK, so here are four Tuckerizations I've collected. Three I collected while attending World Cons in Chicago and Philadelphia many years ago. They were auctioned off to support the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America -- Emergency Medical Fund. The 4th one was a surprise by the author. Details for each Tuckerization is below the book cover photo.

In Diplomatic Immunity, flight surgeon Captain Chris Clogston is male, at the author's request. She actually just emailed me and asked if it was OK to switch the character's gender. I obviously didn't have a problem with that. Ms. Bujold also sent me a really nice thank you note in a package of signed books, which was above and beyond what I'd won in the charity auction (naming a character in her next novel).

Monstrous Regiment has a minor character named Chris Clogston, an attorney who represents the "monstrous regiment", women dressed as men so they could be soldiers. This character always carries snacks with her to fight a recurrent problem with low blood sugar (like me, I usually carry a protein bar or a half of a PB&J).

Terry was very kind an funny in his emails but he did have his solicitor send me a non-disclosure agreement to sign and mail back to the UK -- he wanted to make sure that I didn't leak any details of the novel before it was published (not that he disclosed many details in our emails).

In Harry Turtledove's alternate U.S. history novel (one of a series) Victorious Opposition, the character named for me actually features a few personal details. In this novel, Chris Clogston is a 9th generation Irish-American living in Boston with a quilt store. I do quilt and my ancestor John Clogston traveled from Ireland to Boston in 1745. I am Irish-American, but like so many Americans, I'm also a mix of other extractions. Harry was interested in my family history as well as any skills or hobbies I had that were "pre-industrial" to fit his novel's background.

Ru Emerson was a Guest of Honor at one of our Southern California Xena Fests and auctioned off a "Dead Body" opportunity for charity (we supported Working Wardrobes for a New Start). Ru is a writer well known for giving characters colorful deaths, so this was an opportunity to be "killed" in her (then) upcoming Xena novel, How the Quest Was Won. I won the auction and asked Ru to "kill off" my good friend Sharon. And she did so with style; Saroni (Sharon) is beheaded by Xena's chakram. What was surprising was that Ru also put me in the novel, as the mysterious high-priestess Krysta. X:WP editor Rob Field is also in the novel under his web handle, Avicus. Ru also wrote a nice acknowledgement at the end of the novel. It was a fun experience for all of us. Thanks Ru!

Amazon Mask

Amazon Mask made of painted foam and dyed raffia. I love the "pigtails" on this mask. I know it was worn in production but I have never tried to put this on.

Barbie over at Xena PropHouse has ID'd the mask from both H:TLJ (Season 3 "Mummy Dearest" and on X:WP (Season 2 "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun").

She sent me these screen caps with the mask clearly in use:

Gabrielle's Foldable Staff

The concept for this didn't seem to grab TPTB because we see Gabrielle use it in the episode, "The Greater Good" and then not again.

Amazon Queen Gabrielle

Who is reluctant to be Princess? Gab, for sure. She became Princess rather suddenly, when Terreis's "Right of Caste" was given to Gabrielle just before Terreis died from wounds gotten in an ambush. This was in the first season episode, Hooves and Harlots, which happens to be the first X:WP episode I saw (I came a little late to the game).

But later, she takes the Queen Mask and dons it before Velasca gets a chance to do so, cementing her right to be the next Amazon Queen. And what a fabulous costume Renee O'Connor got to wear as Queen:

I do not have the Queen Mask (it was owned by an American fan in New Zealand but I have no idea where it is now) and I never found the purple cloth underskirt (it wasn't part of the package). I obtained this online during It's A Wrap's auction of H:TLJ and X:WP props and costumes.

Warner Brothers Archive Visit -- Part 1/? Wonder Woman

I'm fortunate to have a number of close friends from the Xena Gang that formed during my years of active fandom and one of them is a publicist at Warner Brothers. Two summers ago, she gave me and some of my family members a private tour of WB Studios. My favorite time was spent in the Archives, an exhibition space that is changed a few times each year. The WB Archives is a prop and costume fancier's dreamscape. On this visit, the first floor was occupied by Wonder Woman (2017) and Aquaman (2018), while the second floor was filled with Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts exhibits.

One piece of information we learned is if you encounter a WB prop or costume for sale, it's either stolen property or it's inauthentic. Warner Brothers keeps it all in the Archive. Apologies in advance for photos taken through display cases and the persistent glare.

"We are excited to be presenting A Salute to Xena’s 25th Anniversary on August 28-30, 2020 at the Hyatt Regency Los Angeles Airport, giving fans from around the globe the opportunity for a once-in-a-lifetime celebration of the series and its stars that made it what it is! More details to come."

New Xena: Warrior Princess Comic Book Means New Art

It's been awhile, but finally, some new pieces.

Dynamite Entertainment brought back the Xena: Warrior Princess Comic book in 2016, which means there is new original art out there. The first year's issues had multiple covers and artist Jenny Frison did a number of the art versions. I picked up the original art for issues #1, #2, and #4. These covers feature nice portraits of Xena and/or Gabrielle. Professional framing is expensive but I find it's the best way to protect and display art. These have matching mats and frames. You'll note that the art for #4 is just a little taller than the first two covers, and the finished piece is just slightly taller as a result.

If you are looking for costumes and props great provenance, be sure to take a look at the items up for sale by The Xena Museum. The item many people are watching is the complete Ares costume, and I recall when the Museum acquired it.
