The first big transfer of the season for Club Tijuana comes in the name of Herculez Gomez. The North American striker was dealt to Xolos by his former team, Club Santos Laguna. Earlier in the week the Aztec dogs had approached the laguneros for the U.S. Men’s National Team striker. The rojinegros accepted the terms today and signed the Los Angeles native making him the first major transfer for the Apertura 2012 champions.

Gomez arrived in Torreon during the Clausura 2012 season. He lined up on 45 occasions with Santos and scored 13 goals in La Liga MX and an additional nine in CONCACAF Champions League. Previously he’d played at Puebla FC where he was the first American to win a goal scoring title outside the U.S., sharing the title with current Manchester United striker Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez. His performances in Mexico have earned him call ups to the USMNT, including a last minute call up to play in the South Africa 2010 FIFA World Cup. Since returning to the USMNT Gomez has scored five goals with Uncle Sam’s boys, including the game winner in a 1-0 over Jamaica in Sept. 11, 2012 World Cup Qualifier.

Xolos will participate in the 2013-14 CONCACAF Champions League and will need the firepower up front to help them advance in the competition. Argentine striker Alfredo Moreno recently left the club leaving a vacancy on the attacking line. Tijuana also announced that their star striker, Colombian Duvier Riascos, is available during the Liga MX transfer window.

There was much hype in Tijuana yesterday with, at one time, the best player in the world Ronaldinho Gaúcho steping foot on the Estadio Caliente. Another historic game for the Xolos as they attempted to be in a very select few of Mexican clubs that have reached the semifinals of the storied Copa Libertadores tournament.

They started off on the right foot looking clearly superior to the Brazilian squad from Belo Horizonte, Clube Atlético Mineiro. The Brazilians looked flat footed with very little movement on the synthetic turf in the Estadio Caliente. All of the clear shots on goal were coming from the Tijuanense’s and truly were playing in inspired form. Then in the 32nd minute Duvier Riascos scored to give the home team a 1-0 lead. Could it be possible that the underdog, pun intended, could really pull off another miracle and defeat another Brazilian team? It clearly was looking that way as even Xolos supporters at the stadium were in shock and then began to believe.

Then again, after the intermission Ecuadorian Fidel Martinez gave Club Tijuana a 2-0 lead in the 53rd minute after pacing  a shot off the right side of the Atletico Mineiro defense. Martinez took a rebound after Alfredo Moreno’s shot was punched away by  goalkeeper Victor Bagy.

2-0 with less than thirty minutes left. A score that would have been more than advantageous for the squad in a competition where away goals count and often decide who advances and who is left behind. But then in the 61st minute after a botched defensive play Diego Tardelli scored for Atletico Mineiro sending the ball past Club Tijuana goalkeeper Cirilo Saucedo on a rebounded shot. Then the unthinkable the Brazilians tied the match seconds before the final whistle when Luan Gedeao de Paiva beat defender Javier Gandolfi to the ball and sent a shot past Saucedo to tie the match.

What looked like a game that could have potentially send the Xolos very close to the Semi Finals turned into an uphill battle with Mineiro scoring TWO crucial away goals and making the next match in Belo Horizonte on Thursday May 30th a difficult hill to climb for the team. A win by any score or a draw grater than 3-3 will send the Xolos into the next round but if that were to happen it would be with a new coach as the game in Brazil will be the last for current coach Anotnio Mohamed.

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Padres announced that tickets for the 2013 San Diego Clásico at Petco Park will go on sale to the general public on Thursday, May 16 at 10:00 a.m. The exhibition match featuring the Xolos de Tijuana of Liga MX and Club América is scheduled for Saturday, July 6 at 7:30 p.m.

The 2013 Clásico will be a rematch of last year’s event at Qualcomm Stadium, which ended in a 1-1 draw. This will be the Xolos’ fourth-ever appearance in the San Diego Clásico, including a March 2011 match vs. the Los Angeles Galaxy of the MLS and a February 2012 contest vs. Chivas USA.

Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente, commonly referred to as Xolos de Tijuana or simply Xolos, was founded in January of 2007 and joined Liga MX, Mexico’s top soccer division, in 2011. The Xolos are reigning league champions, having won the Apertura 2012 title last December, the league’s fall tournament. The club is currently competing in the Copa Libertadores, the most prestigious club competition in South America, and is among the final 16 teams. The Xolos feature Tijuana-born Fernando Arce and San Diegan, Sweetwater High and San Diego State alum Joe Corona.

América is one of the oldest and most successful clubs in Mexican soccer history. Founded in 1916 and playing their home contests in famed Estadio Azteca, América has won ten domestic national titles and added eight FIFA recognized club trophies.

The Xolos and América match will be the third soccer event contested at Petco Park. In 2005, the park hosted an international match between Mexico and Sweden, drawing a crowd of more than 30,000. The ‘ChivaClásico’, an exhibition between Chivas USA and Chivas de Guadalajara, was played in 2010 in front of 23,216 fans.

The seventh annual Xolos Summer Classic will take place over two weekends in June, with boys and girls teams competing on separate dates. Boys’ teams, U9B through U19, will square off on June 8 and 9, while girls’ teams will take the pitch on June 15 and 16. Games will be played at the Birdsall Sports Complex in Temecula, Calf. The tournament is hosted by Xolos USA FC Academy, an affiliate of Club Tijuana Xoloitzquintles de Caliente – popularly known as Xolos.

The Xolos Summer Classic is a Class I Tournament, sanctioned by Cal South. The competition is open to teams affiliated with US Youth Soccer Association, Super Y League, AYSO and FIFA. In addition, teams from Xolos Tijuana Academy will take part in the tournament, and coaches from the Academy will be on hand to scout top players.

Each team that participates in the tournament is guaranteed at least three matches in pool play. Teams at the U8 through U10 levels may have up to 14 players on their rosters, while U11 and older teams may carry up to 18. The tournament allows unlimited borrowed players for competing sides. Trophies will be presented to champion and finalist teams, along with medals for all players on the top two sides. Individual awards will be presented for MVP, Best Offensive Player and Best Keeper.

The location of the Xolos Summer Classic in Temecula makes it a perfect destination for families as well as players. The site is about 70 minutes away from the Magic Kingdom of Disneyland and other attractions in Orange County. Less than an hour south is San Diego, with the world-famous San Diego Zoo, Legoland California and Sea World, and the San Diego Zoo’s Safari Park is even closer. For families wanting to experience Mexico, a drive to the border and Tijuana is less than an hour and a half.

The Xolos Summer Classic is a unique event that encourages every team and every player attending to play at the highest level. The tournament promotes healthy competition and sportsmanship in a high-quality environment.

Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente pulled a final minute 1-0 upset over their Colombian rivals Millonarios FC to end their group stage participation in the Copa Libertadores. Xolos concluded the group stage with 13 points, the same as the group leader SC Corinthians of Brazil. The 2012 FIFA Clubs World Cup champion ended above Xoloitzcuintles on goal differential.

Ecuadorian Fidel Martinez scored the only goal of the game for Xolos in the final seconds of the game. Martinez gave the Aztec dogs their fourth win in the competition. Millonarios did not show much on the field content with defending.

“Our competition came out to defend them-selves,” Mohamed said at the end of the game. “We had three or four goal options but didn’t complete. The good thing is that we returned to winning, plus the youngsters’ attitude on the pitch was great.”

Mohamed put an alternative team on the field since the squad had already advanced to the round of 16 of the competition. The squad had many new players who have not seen much action in either tournament; amongst them, American Greg Garza and Jorge Hernandez.

It took Xolos close to 35 minutes to come together on the pitch. The Colombians began with a defensive strategy counting on a counter attack to try to get on the board. However, the visiting squad realized that they could take control of the ball since the locals were having communications troubles. Millonarios attempted some plays, but the Xolos defense was on mark to stop them.

Once Xolos got their rhythm it became a constant attack, but the team still lacked definition in the end as the shooters were missing clear shots. The game went to break 0-0, with Xolos having missed at least three clear shots in the first 45 minutes.

The Colombian side tried to take control of the game in the second half. For several minutes Millonarios moved ahead on attack forcing the rojinegros back onto their side of the pitch. However, Xolos turned it around and began to control the ball once more.

Martinez was a constant threat on the wing giving the defense a tough evening. “Tijuana’s Neymar” was constantly serving the ball to center with several of the Xolos players missing the goal mark on perfect centers.

When it appeared that the game would conclude with a scoreless draw, Martinez appeared to give the Tijuana fans something to cheer about. Martinez received a center. He jumped and moved past his markers to receive the ball alone in front of goalkeeper Luis Delgado. Martinez controlled the ball and fired to the keeper’s right side to set the score 1-0.

The goal came in the 90 +3 minute of play. As soon as the ball was taken to the center circle and cleared the referee blew the whistle to end the game. Xolos claimed the victory 1-0 with a goal from the man who left it all on the pitch during the game.

“It’s been a great experience for us,” Mohamed concluded. “We earned a high amount of points. I think we weren’t expected to earn as many points as we did. Now we’ve got to think about Saturday and the league game that is ahead.”

Xolos and Corinthians now wait to see who their round of 16 opponents will be.

Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente returned to practice on Monday as they prepare for their final game in the group stage of the Copa Libertadores this Wednesday at the Caliente stadium. Xolos have already advanced to the Round of 16 of the continental championship. They currently sit in the second position of the group with 10 points, the same as SC Corinthians of Brazil which leads on goal differential.

This Wednesday Xolos will face Millonarios FC of Colombia. The Aztec dogs defeated Millonarios in Colombia in their first game in Libertadores action. Now they are looking to score enough goals to earn a higher seed for the Round of 16 draw.

Coach Antonio Mohamed led a team practice on Monday between squads in closed spaces with the team that is expected to take on the Colombian champions. Xolos want to end the group stage with 13 points.

“We’ve met out objective, but we want to earn these points to advance into the round of 16 the best way possible,” defender Joshua Abrego told the press after practice. “We cannot be over confident. We know Millonarios will come to play intelligently and we’ve got to be on the ball.”

Abrego has gotten game time in the competition and has emerged as one of Mohamed’s “go to” defenders. Bruno Piceno, a 21 year old Tijuana native, is looking to make a name for himself with the rojinegros. The striker may get an opportunity to shine against Millonarios.

“Very motivated, working day to day looking for that opportunity when it presents itself,” Piceno told the press at the mix zone. “We have to be ready. The competition gets tougher every step you take. But the team works hard and we know who we will face so we must be ready.”

Xolos are scheduled to take on Millonarios FC on Wednesday, Apr. 10, 2013 at the Caliente stadium to wrap-up group 5 action. Corinthians will host San Jose de Oruro in the other group game. Both Xolos and current FIFA Clubs World Cup champion Corinthians will advance to the Round of 16 of Libertadores.
