Lion Cubs

Lion Cubs from Bristol Zoo

Too cute Asiatic lion cubs being hand-reared at Bristol Zoo, a registered charity.

The cubs are fed five times in a 24 hour period and are reportedly doing well.

There are only a few hundred remaining Asiatic lions in the wild.

Doing it for the kids in Kenya

Water works to alleviate poverty and suffering

Water charity celebrates role of clean water in development aid

The charity WaterAid has been one of the major charities celebrating the importance of Global Handwashing Day 2012 that promotes handwashing as a simple way to reduce disease and sickness.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) says promoting handwashing with soap and water can cut diarrhoea cases by about 50 per cent, saving many lives as a result.

Tragically 2,000 kids under five die each day due to this preventable disease.

WaterAid is active bringing clean water development projects across Africa and other developing countries.

As well as promoting health and safety the charity’s water projects also provide a platform for wider health, education and economic development in poor communities, including rural communities.

The charity's Big Dig projects in Malawi, for instance this year, benefited entire communities’ abilities to be productive and generate wealth.

With access to clean water and sanitation, children’s health is promoted so they are well enough to attend school and get an education. Women do not have to walk long distances for water across potentially dangerous landscapes. There is more time and energy for parents to earn a living and support their families.

783 million people globally lack access to clean drinking water, it is estimated, while about 2.5 billion people do not have safe sanitation.

In a recent statement Henry Northover, WaterAid's Head of Policy, praising an appeal by British Prime Minister David Cameron for more countries to step up international aid to relieve poverty, said:

"Improvements in water and sanitation reduce illness and deaths and are vital to meeting many of the other development goals.

"Sanitation is one of the most off-track of the targets and diarrhoea remains one of the biggest killers of children in Africa."

The water charity works in 27 countries across Africa, as well as Asia, Central America and the Pacific.

World Food Day - WFP campaign (video)

WFP, the World Food Programme has launched a video to support World Food Day. It's rather good.

1- WFP is the world's largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger.
2- WFP is funded entirely by voluntary donations.
3- WFP says feeding a hungry child is one of the smartest investments you can make, it costs next to nothing.

International Day of the Girl – equality for all at work and home

Charities are calling for support to spread girls economic and social rights across the globe

Today Thursday October 11, 2012 is the first International Day of the Girl Child.

On the day of International Day of the Girl Child today UNICEF is focusing on ending child marriage as its main campaign issue.

UNICEF and partners are highlighting joint efforts to end child marriage – described as “a fundamental human rights violation.”

“The International Day of the Girl Child readily reflects the need to put girls rights at the centre of development...” said Anju Malhotra from UNICEF.

"The UN and partners are coming together to show the incredible progress made and to highlight the ongoing challenges."

Under the banner My Life, My Right, End Child Marriage, a series of events are taking place throughout the world to draw attention to this issue.

In partnership with other agencies UNICEF also says it is laying the groundwork to end child marriage globally with a number of programmes.

The charity points to India, traditionally a country with one of the largest number of girls being married before their 18th birthday, where child marriage is declining.

"Child marriage can often result in ending a girl’s education. In communities where the practice is prevalent, marrying a girl as a child is part of a cluster of social norms and attitudes that reflect the low value accorded to the human rights of girls," says Ms Malhotra.

A key part of International Day of the Girl is to promote education, one of the most effective strategies to protect children against marriage and promote economic and social opportunities for women.

Guy Ryder, of the UN’s International Labour Organisation (ILO), also welcomed the special focus on gender inequality today which the ILO says is reproduced in the world of work.

"Practices such as child labour and child marriage – the theme of this day – are a denial of the rights of children and an acute constraint to their full development.

"Such practices also weigh heavily on the overall capacity of societies to achieve their development objectives."

Katy Perry is the latest female music icon to add clout to amfAR's Inspiration AIDS/HIV gala fundraiser series

Katy Perry is set to lend her support to the ADS/HIV charity amfAR at the non-profit's next Inspiration fundraising gala.

AmfAR, the Foundation for AIDS Research’s Inspiration gala is set for Los Angeles on Thursday, October 11, 2012 with special guest Sarah Jessica Parker also in attendance along with a host of other wellwishers.

The Inspiration series has been a succesful fundraising and awareness initiative for amfAR and has raised over 5 million USD for the AIDS/HIV charity’s programmes since it was launched in 2010. The galas have been held at city venues including Paris and São Paulo as well as New York and Los Angeles.

Previous amfAR Inspiration performers have included Liza Minnelli, Grace Jones, Sinéad O’Connor, Debbie Harry, Courtney Love and Cyndi Lauper amongst others.

AmfAR, the international aids charity, supports AIDS/HIV education, research and treatment programmes, including grass-roots initiatives in developing countries.

Paul McCartney is a regular supporter of charities, and we have regularly covered his efforts in the last year via our news channel, including his support for a HSI cruelty free campaign, and a PETA campaign to release an Indian elephant from cruelty.

New Baby Gorilla: Durrell Wildlife Trust

Success as baby gorilla is born at UK wildlife conservation centre

Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust is celebrating after the birth of a baby gorilla. Too cute for words. But also an important part of the charity’s conservation efforts helping the world’s most endangered species to survive. Based in Jersey in the Channel Islands, Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust announced the new arrival of the healthy baby western lowland gorilla a few days ago to mother: Hlala Kahilli and father: Badongo. The baby remains stuck to its mum for the time being.

Western lowland gorillas are listed as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN).

Unsurprisingly Mark Brayshaw, Head of Animal Collection at Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, described the importance of the birth as “a great success for Durrell”.

It's especially an achievement for the charity’s breeding programme supporting these critically endangered primates. Congratulations to Durrell and also to parents Hlala and Badongo.

A new charity HelpHarryHelpOthers has been created in memory of young Harry Moseley who raised funds for Cancer Research UK.

Duncan Bannatyne, Ben Shephard, John Terry and actors James and Oliver Phelps (Harry Potter) have been announced as ambassadors for the charity.

A Harry Moseley charity fundraising ball is also planned for October 19, 2012 at the ICC in Birmingham.

The event in aid of HelpHarryHelpOthers will include live entertainment, champagne reception, meal as well as other activities, including fundraising auctions for the charity.

Badger supporters about to launch milk wars?

Action against badger cull steps up, including threats to boycott farmers milk

Animal welfare charities have launched a fresh campaign to challenge badger culls in the UK, with the RSPCA even calling for a boycott of milk produced by farmers in areas where the culls are going ahead.

The campaign seems to have some weight behind it already with the Co-op, one of Britain's biggest farmers already coming out in favour of the badger supporters with a statement saying: "There is no expectation that badger culls will take place on land managed by the Co-operative and nor would they be supported..."

The talk of boycotts comes as a new coalition of animal welfare charities, Team Badger was launched this week by Brian May of the band Queen, following an e-petition campaign.

Bovine TB is a serious issue resulting, for instance, in the loss of 25,000 cattle to UK farmers in 2010.

Should farmers be threatened with further economic losses in the form of a boycott?

Some animal welfare supporters think so, but more importantly they want the shooting of badgers to be abandoned due to animal welfare grounds and the lack of credibility of the proposals.

The Badger Trust feels the death of 40,000 badgers over the next four years if the culls are rolled out further is totally unacceptable, especially when the scientific grounds for the culls are being repeatedly called into question.
