This ROM is not intended for daily use and has a lot of stuff not working including Wi-Fi, data, audio, browser, camera and spaarc says that it is “highly unstable”. Give it some time though and we’re sure the ROM will get more polish. Click here for full details and see a preview video below.

The service is free thankfully and the company promises that it should take around seven calendar days to complete. We’re not entirely sure why the handset would need to be sent back, especially given that everyone else around the world could upgrade their X10 to Gingerbread using PC Companion or SEUS. I’m unsure of the exact methodology Bit9 use to determine which phones are most vulnerable but the version of Android and timeliness of updates appears to play a part. They suggest this means that “security vulnerabilities are not being maintained, bugs are not being patched, and loopholes in your system are being left open“. The last firmware for the X10 was 2.3.3 and the latest from Google is 2.3.7 (ignoring ICS for now). This seems a bit harsh to us considering that the 2011 Xperia line-up is only on Android 2.3.4. We’re sure Bit9 is talking its own book here but the infographic below is an interesting read nonetheless.

This alpha ROM certainly is not stable enough to be used on a daily basis (that’s the whole point of an alpha release), however if you want to test it out and leave some feedback then there’s no harm in giving it a try. Either way this is great work from the devs. Sony Ericsson is unlikely to release ICS for the Xperia X10, so this is the first step on the path to a stable ICS custom ROM. The recent news regarding Sony’s acquisition of Ericsson’s stake in the Sony Ericsson joint venture leaves us even more excited about developments for the company’s future smartphones. Thankfully, we will now be there sharing our thoughts through every step of the journey.

Sony Ericsson is alleging that we have used the domain names in “bad faith”. We are stunned and disappointed that Sony Ericsson, a company that we have spent much of our free personal time in promoting, especially the Xperia brand, has decided to take this formal action against us. After all we are just like you, passionate Sony Ericsson users, who have strived to bring the community breaking news and an independent viewpoint.

We do not have the resources to fight Sony Ericsson on this and therefore this is the last you will hear from us. Sony Ericsson has made great strides in its Xperia portfolio, especially in listening to the community. This makes it all the more confusing as to why Sony Ericsson would want to shut us down. We genuinely believe that 2012 could be a bumper year for the company, we just wish we could have been there along for the ride.

The person who made the complaint felt this claim was a bit fishy, despite the companies ‘disclaimer’ that “battery performance may vary depending on network conditions and configuration, and phone usage”. The complainant said that numbers should represent some idea of real-life usage.

Sony Ericsson countered that this battery life was indeed possible in a ‘laboratory environment’ but conceded that “when any mobile phone was used in real life, the actual standby time could be considerably lower”.

The ASA upheld the complaint as the claim needed to be qualified saying that this maximum level was theoretical. It therefore found the claim misleading and has ordered the company to change this on the website. As of writing it is still up here and here. It’s a bit harsh to single out Sony Ericsson as all manufacturers do this, however let’s hope this leads to more sensible battery life numbers from across the industry.
