We had a few hours to kill late in the afternoon and decided we needed to go for a fish.

It was rough as guts and we only got one Spanish Mackerel, but we did get some nice photos.

We took Adam and his mates out for a troll and bottom bouncing session. Unfortunately the trolling was not on that day, but the bottom bouncing was.

The guys managed to land some nice fish and quite an assortment.

Big Yellowfin Tuna with Colin and Riley

Colin and Riley came into the shop wanting to catch a big fish. It did not matter what kind of fish as long as it was big.

Rosie and our new captain Paul took them out for a troll and a bit of bottom bouncing.

The trolling started slow with just the two baby Yellowfin tuna's.

Then the wait for the fish to arrive.

Finally Colin gets hooked up to a nice fish and the fight is on.

After a good long fight a 25 kilo Yellowfin is gaffed into the boat.

Followed the YFT up with a couple of Spanish mackerels.

Time for some bottom bouncing. Nice Goat fish.

A plethora of reef fish were caught on the day.

Now it is Riley's turn for his big fish.

A big grouper and a Big smile to match.

A good time was had by all and we hope to see them back.

Charter fishing in Fiji with Derek, Carly, John and Brendan.

No snorkeling today with Derek and Carly, just good old fashioned trolling.

We got word that the Wahoo and Spanish Mackerel had arrived in Fiji and were on the chew.

So, with trolling gear in hand and a full tank of gas off we go.

The weather started a bit iffy but soon the sun was out and the sky cleared up. We had a bit of wind chop all day but nothing we couldn't handle. After all, the trades in Fiji can blow 25 knots for a week straight. 10 to 15 is nothing, just keeps you cool in the sun.

Tropical Fiji Snorkeling

Our first snorkel trip with Derek and Carly from Indiana USA.

They had a great time and the visibility was great. Lots of fish and great visibility.

Xstreem Fishing Charters

Reef fishing using jigs, soft plastics and/or bait for Grouper, Emperors, Trevally and snapper.

Light popping for Bluefin Trevally, Emperors, and assorted top water predators.

Heavy popping for GT’s.

Trolling for gamefish like Tuna, Wahoo, Spanish Mackerel, Mahimahi and assorted predators.

Your fishing charter includes all needed fishing gear, bottled water and soft drinks. Pick up and drop off from you Pacific Harbour Resort.

What you will need to bring, snacks and lunch, sunscreen, polarized sunglasses and your sense of adventure and fun.

The boat for the day is a custom built 28’ center console powered by a Yamaha 225 4stroke. Fully surveyed and Fiji registered. It is equipped with safety and emergency equipment. A VHF radio and cell phones in water proof cases.

Any fish caught on the charters will be the property of the boat, guests are welcome to take back what they themselves can eat for dinner. The crew will fillet the fish for the guest after the charter if requested.

Giant Trevally (GT’s) will all be released.

Maori Wrasse will all be released.

Xstreem Fishing reserves the right to amend prices, apply additional fuel surcharges, cancel departures and arrange alternative charter vessels if necessary.

Your safety and health is our priority, therefore charters may be rescheduled if conditions are not suitable. Xstreem Fishing reserves the right to cancel or amend any charter due to dangerous weather or ocean conditions. If the charter is to be cancelled, the trip will be rescheduled for another day.

Cancelations must be made more than 24 hours prior to the charter’s departure. A cancelation fee of 10% will be charged on cancelations made more than 24hours before departure. Cancelations within 24 hrs of charter or failure to show on the day of charter will be charged 100% cancelation fee and will not be refunded or re-booked.

$1200.00 FJD per day (8 hours)

$700.00 FJD per half day (4 hours)

A max of 4 people for trolling and reef fishing and a max of 3 people for popping.

Battle of the Triggerfish

I had a gut feeling that the fishing would not be good, but we wanted to go out anyway.

The weather was very calm and the sea followed suit. The air was thick with humidity and no breeze to speak of.

We set out, Rosie, Brendan, Paul and myself, in hopes of catching something.

Things started out really slow. Not even the bait fish were biting, but persistence paid off and a few small fish were landed. They were to be used as bait (poor buggers).

We continued fishing with little success and much sweatiness.

As the day progressed our catch did not.

At one point I was jigging a soft plastic when I felt what appeared to be a bite, I set the hook and prepared for a fight. Alas I was hooked to the fishes house, snagged, caught the bottom. During my zealousness to free my lure there was an unmistakable cracking sound. Yep I broke my favorite jigging rod. For those of you who have never broken a graphite rod, the crack is memorable not to mention gut wrenching.

As the top half of my rod slipped away down the line and into the blue abyss, my heart sank with it.

After many expletive's, I realized my line was loose. Go figure, after all that it could have had the decency to stay snagged.

As I reeled it up I noticed that it was a bit heavy, too heavy for my jig. Low and behold there was a fish on the end and it was...........a Leather Jacket, aka Clown Triggerfish.

Well, you have to laugh at times like this, of course that is after you cry. Nothing I can do about it now and there was still some fishing to do.

We fished on for another couple of hours to no real avail.

I new it was not going to be a great day of fishing, but still better than work.

First jigging session of 2013

Sorry for the delay in posting. I was on vacation for November then there was December, which is always a bit crazy, cyclones and xmas and all that stuff. So now we are into January and I am back at it.

Our first fishing trip of the year was slated as a jigging trip. We all had been eating too much beef and pork and were craving some fish.

So a hunting we shall go.

The weather looked a bit ominous in the morning, but the rarely deters us.

Our crew for today is Rosie, of course, Brendan, Wayne, John and yours truly.

Our objective is food fish by means of jigging.

With out further ado, let the fishing begin.

There is a story with this fish. Rosie catches a little fish about the size of your hand. Then she decides to live bait it. So back down it goes. She then catches a larger fish with the small on, but it is not quite big enough. Back down it goes. With in a couple of minutes she is hooked up to this big fella and ends our session on a high note.

Keep you hand out of it's mouth.

We had a great day out and the weather cleared up. Best of all I had fish for dinner, YUMMMMM!

Pop and Drop

This time we decided to do a bit of popping for GT's and then a bit of jigging after.

Just Rosie, Wayne and myself on the boat today.

The morning started out a bit gloomy, but the fish don't care, so why should we.

My shoulder has been hurting me so I was sticking with a stick bait instead of a popper. As the photo below says it all, it was working. A nice Grouper.

Wayne gets on the board with the first GT on popper. A nice clean fellow and easy release.

He follows it up with a little one that is feisty as all get out.

Not to be out done, I cast my stick bait to a fishy looking spot and proceed to hook up a nice Spanish Mackerel.

Wayne with a little Barracuda that Rosie has claimed for bait.

Wayne started jigging in 100 meters of water and proceeded to hook up more than 10 Dog Tooth Tuna. Unfortunately the head he is holding represents the only proof of his sweat. The sharks were thick and relentless to the point of us moving on to another spot.

Rosie on the other hand was having a very successful bait fishing trip. She filled the ice box single handedly.

This is a Long Nose Emperor. Caught at over 100 meters and fought all the way to the surface. A very tough customer, but not as tough as Rosie.

We had another great day out, with plenty of fish caught and lost by a variety of methods.

One very rough Sunday

The weather Gods have not been kind to us this year. There has been two kinds of weather, rain with wind or sun with more wind. This day was sun with more wind.

OK enough whining, we still went fishing.

As I said it was windy so jigging was on tap for the day.

Now typically when the weather acts up the fish like to bite, after all, the surging water just brings more food to them. Today was that way, the fishing was good, but a lot of work for the skipper, me.

When bottom fishing it is important that you have a good fish finder and transducer. Reading the bottom is everything with this type of fishing.

I use a Garmin 4010 GPSMAPS with a 2kw transducer, I'll post a photo later.

We fished as long as we could until the wind and wave became unbearable. At one point we were taking waves over the transom and engine while trying to hold a position long enough to drop to the bottom.

We caught lots of fish and lots of species of fish so no complaining. No one is listening anyway.

Some good friend of ours came to visit on their way to Christmas Island, John and Karen. Now these two are probably more mad about fishing than Rosie and I. And that says alot.

While they were staying with us it was John's birthday, so we had to go fishing on that day come hell or high water.

Now being mad fishers, these two don't really need any lessons. Except the proper technique for casting a heavy popping outfit, which took all of about 1 minute.

Now if only the fish would cooperate.

The weather was strange, no wind and very muggy.

Hat off to these two, they put in some serious casting time and for John it finally paid off.

The mystery fish has been identified

Thanks to Mike Neumann of Beqa Adventure Divers and here . The fish ID mystery has been solved. It turns out it is a Yellow Spotted Trevally, Carangoides fulvoguttatus (also known as the goldspotted trevally and tarrum) also here.

It is a first for us, but not an uncommon fish.

Help me identify this fish

This fish was caught in about 130 meters of water. At first I thought it was a bluefin trevally, but once I got it home I realized it was something different. It has blue on the anal fin and tail but not on the top of the body near the dorsal fin. It has a strange hump on its head and big blubbery lips. The scales were almost to small to see and the lateral line does not really match up with the bluefin trevally.

I was thinking maybe a hybrid, but not sure.

If you have any ideas let me know.

The weather was not looking so good on this particular Sunday, so we decided to stay inside the reefs and do a bit of light tackle fishing.

Out comes the 6lb to 30lb gear. Now anytime you pull out this light of tackle in the ocean, your gear is bound to get smashed and busted. We were not let down. Lots of tackle was lost, but a lot of fish were landed too.

The weather did not disappoint us either. It blew harder and harder as the day progressed. Good thing we stayed inside.

Finally getting my shop online

After many failed attempts at getting our tackle shop online, we have come up with an idea that might work.

A blog and a bit of Facebook and voila, e commerce at it simplest. We can take payment via PayPal, TT, or credit card over the phone.

I am hoping this will generate a bit of income for us as the shop has been rather slow these days.

Stop by and have a look, we will be adding new stuff on a regular basis.

Another Monday at Sea

Another beautiful Monday for fishing as Rosie and I head out. Today will be a little jigging and bait fishing.

Fishing started off really slow. Nothing was biting. I could see fish on the sounder, but they had a case of lockjaw.

Finally, after many drops with the jig, I hook up to a small Barracuda that Rosie immediately claims for her bait.

We try a few more spots and get zeroed.

As we are moving from one spot to another I am taking in the scenery, enjoying the day, when all of a sudden Rosie screams. I look out the front, where I should have been looking all along, and what do I see, a Humpback whale right in front of the boat. A quick turn of the wheel and we avoid a collision with the giant. Of course by the time we get the camera out and ready the big guy disappears.

Truly amazing how 40 tons of mammal can vanish instantly.

As we carry on to our merry way we spot the big guy a ways out and Rosie gets the video rolling.

So we have not been catching much and Rosie says I can do a bit of jigging for Doggies.

That means deeper water than she really likes to fish.

So I'm jigging away and I notice it is taking a long time to hit the bottom. How deep are we? I ask.

Um it says 165 meters.

Yikes, no wonder it was taking so long to get to the bottom. I decide to let it fall and give it a try anyways.

My jig hits bottom and as I get my first crank of the reel I'm on. Not big mind you, but I'm on. It is a long ways up from 165 mts and when I finally get the fish to the surface it is a Pakapaka, deep water A grade snapper.

Rosie says wow should I drop and away she goes.

She proceeded to fish until all of our bait was gone and tat accounted for 17 fish of about 5 species. All of them really good eating.

Leave the rod in the holder and you can switch hands reeling.

Since I stopped working on Mondays, Rosie and I try to go fishing then. It does not always work out, sometimes life gets in the way of fishing.

But this Monday all the stars aligned and fishing we went.

The weather was stellar. Flat seas and sunshine.

To top that off the Spanish Mackerel are running and so are the Wahoo.

We set out with four trolling lines in the water. A mix of divers and pushers behind the boat.

We caught nothing. Did I tell you I hate trolling, well I do.

We did manage to come across a pod of dolphins.

Damn they can move. It was very cool to see them, but it also meant no fish.

We trolled for a while longer and then we had enough, time to go popping.

The current was ripping through some really nice bommies. Everything was literally perfect for GT's.

Unfortunately not a single bite, not even a look, not even a passing glance.

Once we casted ourselves silly to no avail it was time to switch gears.

Lets try jigging!

It was only mildly more successful than trolling and popping. At least we landed a few and preserved our catch record.

It was a great day for us to be on the water and to top it off we caught dinner.

Sure beats working.

This trip has been a year in the making.

Rosie and I had promised Derek and Carly, John's daughter and son in law, that we would take them out fishing when they came back to Fiji.

They have returned and as our word is good as gold we took them out.

The weather had been great until they arrived from Indiana. Now it is blowing 15-20 knots and very lumpy to say the least. At least the sky is clear and the sun is out.

We met up first thing in the morning and off we go.

First stop is some casting and popping lessons. Once Derek and Carly get the hang of it then it is time for a try at a GT.

Unfortunately the wind was going to play a major role in where we fished.

We tried spot after spot and had not a single bite.

We tried poppers, stick baits, big and small. Rosie even had a few casts and so did I. Nothing, not even a look.

So we move on to jigging. Speed jigging, slow jigging and soft plastics. Still nothing wants to bite. Now the captain is getting a little peeved. I drop a jig down and after a few attempts, finally hook up and immediately give the rod to Derek. One thing with jigging, you never know what you are going to catch. After a good fight Derek has the mystery fish boat side and it turns out to be a nice Bronze Whaler shark. We had a good look and the it bit the hook off. Thank goodness.

We finally jig up a small fish that is suitable for bait, paternoster rigs for everyone.

Unfortunately the bite just never did turn on. Although a few small grouper were caught, nothing too big.

We had a Fun day even though the fish were not cooperating. It happens sometimes.

I have promised to take them out again when they return, fingers crossed we will have better luck.

Half Cast Fishing Comp

On June 2nd and 3rd, there was a GT fishing comp held at VoliVoli Resort on the other side of the island.
Our team was Rosie, Brendan, Wayne, and of course yours truly.
We are to drive our boat all the way around the island, about 120 miles, Friday. Then fish Saturday and Sunday. Then drive back on Monday.
We planned, packed, planned some more, packed some more, planned a bit more, then planned some more until finally the day arrived.
Now what could possibly go wrong with all the planning that was done?
Well, we left the jetty at 6:00 AM sharp, just as planned, but by the time we left the river we were taking waves over the bow of the boat. That was to be the prelude to the first 2+ hours of our journey. To say it was rough would be an understatement. Luckily once we got to Suva Harbour we would go inside the reef and it would be calmer.
As predicted it got much calmer and we made good time to the Rewa River for the next leg of our journey/adventure. The only problem was, it took over 1.5 hours longer than we had anticipated. That put us to far into the falling tide to cross the sand/mud bar in the river mouth. I eventually put the boat
on the muck and there we sat, waiting for the tide. Now for those who spend time in the saltwater, they will know that waiting for the tide is a fact of life. Fish prefer certain tides and wont bite on slack tides. Sometimes there is too much current caused by the tide and sometimes not enough. Not to mention "time and tide waits for no man".
So there we sat, rigging, talking, eating, and dancing. Waiting for the return of the tide. It took 2.5 hours for the boat to float free again. Good thing we are all friends.
The rest of the trip was like clock work. Once we came out of the Rewa River the wind was on our stern and we flew. Although we did not get to fish on our way up we arrived at the resort at 4:00 PM.
At that very moment all of our plans went out the door.
The problem being, we knew almost everyone there. And when 40+ friends get together at a fishing comp, well we all know what happens. Plans go overboard.
We partook in festive activities until all to late hours of the night/morning.
We did manage to get up and be on the water quite early considering the night before. Unfortunately the weather for the first day of the comp proved to rough and tumble and on top of that, we did not find fish. We caught a few, but not what we had hoped for.
The second night proved even deadlier for our team of merry makers. After all we were Team Xstreem. Xstreem grog, Xstreem tequila, Xstreem beer, Xstreem late night.
Yep, Sunday, day 2 of the comp, was a little rough for us as well as the other teams. A late start, rough weather and xstreem hangovers did not fair well for catching fish. Although I must say Rosie did manage to land a nice GT in the morning. That would be our only GT.
We were a sorry lot I must say.
Oh well, "the best laid schemes (plans) of mice and men often go awry".
Boy did they go awry. No time to sulk, there was a party to be had. After all the winning team came from our fishing club, The Twisted Leaders. They were Team Vai Lima, consisting of Russell Baumann, Erik Powell and Ben Duea. They won best Team, Russell won Best male angler and biggest GT. A side note, they did not partake in any of the festivities. They did however fish hard and deserved to win.
I think we won most partying and least sleep.
On Monday, we were to leave the resort early for the trip home. Yeah right, we left late and missed the tide and did everything in reverse going home.
We had a great time. I would do it again in a second. In fact plans are going forward for a first, catch and release only, popping comp. I don't think we will win that one either.

I am a little behind again in my posting and I apologize for that.

A while back, Brendan, who you all have met, asked if I would shuttle his crew to an island to shoot a commercial. Of course I would and since I'd have a few hours to kill I would take a fishing rod to kill time.

On the appointed morning we left the jetty with ok weather that looked like it might turn ugly. Never mind, we had an entire camera crew and talent on board and needed to get the shots. As luck would have it, when we dropped them off at the island the weather turned glorious for them.

With those guys happily on the island doing their video thing we were free to do some fishing.

By 1 o'clock the weather that was threatening in the morning decided to make an appearance. We loaded the crew on the boat and raced back to shore. We arrived just in time before the rain came.

I told Brendan that we would take them anytime as the fishing was good while they worked.

He was jealous to say the least.

Doggies Take 5

This is our last trip before we left for Japan.
We went searching for Dogtooth Tuna again. But before we could go for Doggies, we had to chase a few GT's.
Now in this post you will notice that the images are not as good as before. Rosie's G10 finally gave up the ghost for the third time and it is time to get a new one. Only problem, they do not sell Canon G series in Fiji, so she will have to wait until we get to Japan.
Meanwhile we shoot with my phone.
We just get into position and Rosie is out on the bow starting to cast and get warmed up when her popper gets destroyed by a giant, fat and definitely healthy GT. What a hell of a fight. After a bit of coaxing it is boat side and it takes two of us to get it out of the water. Rosie, needless to say, has had her ass kicked, but she prevailed.

Well you can imagine how the rest of us felt, energized and ready to land monsters.
Ahhh, but alas it was not meant to be. In fact not another GT was landed. I heard Wayne say that Rosie set the bar to high for us mere mortals.

Finally a Doggie, well a doggies head anyways. Damn sharks.

More good tasting aquarium colored fish.

When you start jigging deep you never know what you will catch. Here I am holding a true Black Trevally. Caranx lugubris (also known as the black trevally, black kingfish, coal fish and black ulua). This is the first one we have caught.

This is a Rusty Jobfish.

A finally Wayne hooks and boats a Dogtooth Tuna. I think we are getting this down now. We are catching them where we think they should be. Not big ones yet but we are still catching them.
