What an exciting week at Xtabay. Tuesday evening I got an email from Conde Nast Traveller magazine saying they were coming on Thursday to do a feature on Portland, Oregon and wanted to photograph Xtabay. As if that wasn't thrilling enough they told me the photographer was Ruven Afanador and he wanted me to wear something BOLD... I immediately googled Ruven and became a tad bit intimidated when I clicked on his website and saw photographs he'd taken of Heidi Klum.

I tore apart my closet searching for something bold and settled on a late 50's black and gold brocade cocktail dress by Suzy Perette. I called my friend Laura who owns Bliss Salon and Day Spa and arranged for her to handle my hair and make-up. Fortunately, when Ruven and his entourage ( a good 15 people!) arrived they were happy with the look we'd created--however, Ruven wanted BIG hair and turned my elegant little chignon into a towering inferno of blond madness. You know what they say....the higher the hair, the closer to God.

Jeff (my forever Fiance') was on hand and took a few shots with his iPhone to capture the excitement. Gabe as usual stole the show and won over Ruven's heart. The crew had a model on hand and dressed her up in the yellow fur kimenetta coat, a long Givenchy maxi dress and about 12 hats...
My ladies helped out and looked beautiful in Xtabay dresses. It was kind of the best day ever...

Xtabay will appear in the September issue of Conde' Nast Traveller. Maybe it's not quite as fabulous as being in the September issue of Vogue but it's pretty darn close!

So I've been a little MIA this past week. Truth is I've been hard at work processing one of the most exciting collections of vintage clothing I've ever had. The Bette collection is vast and primarily dead-stock. Bette did the bulk of her shopping (um...hoarding) during the late 60's and had a habit of tucking things away and forgetting to ever wear them. In fact her voracious appetite for stylish, expensive clothing was so huge that there simply weren't enough hours in a lifetime to wear them all. She bought multiples of everything. If she like a style of jacket she would buy one in every color they came in. Buying a lime green suede jacket? Well then of course you would need to buy the matching shorts!? Often, I will pick up one of her coats to find that inside there is a matching skirt, pant, and dress. Bette favored certain designers: Mam'selle, Anne Fogarty, Modelia, Mr.Mort, Samuel Robert, and Bonnie Cashin (I will be doing a post on all those soon!).
It will take awhile to get through her collection, but over the next few weeks I will be adding pictures and posting on our Facebook page.
A collection like this doesn't come along very often, especially in new-old stock condition. Fortunately for you, Bette was about 4 sizes smaller than yours truly so I won't be hoarding any of it for myself!

Audrey as Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady from 1964.

I am excited to present a small collection of new-old stock high-end wedding gowns from the 1960's. Some of them came from the now defunct Priscilla of Boston, which in it's hey-day created the finest couture quality wedding gowns in the United States. They all date from the mid 1960's and have a sense of regality that reminds me of Audrey Hepburn when she appears as the newly transformed Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady.
The gowns still have their original price tags--some cost as much as 475. in the 1960's.. That was a lot to spend on a dress in those days!

Xtabay Glamour At Sea...

For the last 7 days I've been at sea....My fiance's parents were celebrating their 60th (yes, that's 60 years) wedding anniversary and took the whole family on a week long Princess Cruise off the coast of California.
Being my first cruise, I had no idea what to expect. All I could imagine were scenes from the LoveBoat and briefly considered getting my hair done into a bowl cut. I packed for poolside glamour and the possibility of some karaoke contests (my not so secret passion).
While I don't have any poolside pics to share with you I will say I wore an adorable polka-dot 50's style swimsuit from Popina and an italian silk cover-up/robe from Xtabay. My favorite spot on the ship was the Santuary, a private sun deck you pay 10 bucks to enter and get served cakes and watercress sandwiches while you bask in the sun. Totally decadent and way better that the sitting by the public pool watching a full blast Barry Manilow concert on an enormous jumbotron movie screen--seriously this was really happening.
There were two formal nights and while I was disappointed in the lack of actual formal wear on the ship ( since when was a sparkly t-shirt and stretch pants considered formal?!) I took the opportunity to wear one of my favorite gowns...A 70's Missoni lurex knit number with wings and my biggest and boldest rhinestone earrings and bracelet. My 30's green python bag was the perfect evening bag.
The second formal night I toned it down a tad and wore a fantastic asian inspired 40's rayon dress with red and black beads at the collar and on the front pockets. I paired it with my red Kate Spade patent leather platforms and the green python bag--as well as the enormous rhinestone earrings. Everyone needs a big pair of rhinestone earrings! I love them and am kicking myself for not wearing them by the pool!
Oh well, next cruise I'll know better.

It's 1966 on Mad Men and the fashions are changing. Hems are getting shorter, prints are getting wilder and there's a new Mrs. Draper. Here's a little collection of some of the current Mad Men trends we have in store...

Spring Fever...

The last couple days here in rain soaked Portland have been beautiful. All the flowers are in bloom, allergies are in full effect and I'm experiencing a serious case of spring fever!

This was the first Easter in years that didn't pour down rain. It was so lovely to be outside with all the newest family members while they searched for plastic eggs filled with jelly beans.

That's my niece Maggie, she's only 10 months old and is already an expert egg hunter....

New arrivals in the Bridal Salon and in the main store. I am so excited to see so many high school girls coming in buying vintage prom dresses!
When I was a senior in high school my best friend Maggie and I wore vintage. The two of us headed downtown to Avalon ( a Portland vintage store that's been around forever but doesn't have a website I can link to) and picked out a couple of sexy little black dresses. They weren't so much prom dresses as Femme Fatale man-eater dresses. We both wore blood red lipstick and big black cat-eye sunglasses. I remember my dress was from the late 40's and featured a sexy plunging illusion lace neckline...It was gorgeous and the kind of dress I would still wear today.
We ended up appearing on the cover of the school newspaper posing in front of her late 70's Volvo under the headline "STAG and in STYLE".Makes me laugh today...We didn't have dates senior year, but we had a lot of fun.

Anyone in the vintage clothing business knows how hard it is these days to find good quality clothing from the 20's and 30's. The stuff is simply drying up.
Oh how I miss the days when I could go to Value Village and come home with a few bag loads of vintage treasures. The things I used to find were astonishing. Honestly, that's how I got hooked.
Finding fabulous vintage clothing is a lot more complicated these days. Lucky for me, having a shop means people can bring the stuff to you.
I am thrilled to be consigning a collection of items from a local Portland woman that has been collecting vintage clothing since the 70's. She has shared with me her lovely collection of vintage shoes and gowns from the 20's and 30's. I will be posting more items later this week.

1950's Cahill tea-length wedding dress--that's not a creepy little elbow, it's a pink velvet chair in the back ground!

Waist is 23"-24"--room in the seams to be let out a bit though!
