was driven by lavish dreams to rebel against his father. As an actor,
his pride in his own performance has helped him overcome the prejudices
of the industry. As a lover, he has battled against an image to find his
soulmate.
Anubha Sawhney traces the story within a story hidden behind the scenes of Shakti Kapoor's life

I was born as Sunil Kapoor: My earliest memories are of a cramped house
in Karol Bagh, where I was born as Sunil Kapoor on September 3, 1952. I
was the second of four children born to Sikander Lal Kapoor, who had a
tailoring shop at CP, and Susheela, a housewife. Often, we fell short of
money, but I was happy with my siblings Renu, Parvin and Rummy.

I was thrown out of three schools: I was never interested in books and
got through exams in the third division. In fact, I was thrown out of
three schools — Holy Child, Frank Anthony Public School and Salwan
Public School —for bad behaviour. I got into fights because I wanted to
have my way at all costs.
I rebelled against my father: My
father was a miser who kept saving all his money. This attitude made me
rebel against him and I frequently went for long drives in his Fiat,
much against his wishes. Although my father wanted me to join the family
business, I was determined to run a travel agency. We fought because of
this.
I dated my cricket captain's girlfriend: I secured
admission to the BCom (pass) course at Kirori Mal College through the
sports quota. Cricket was a passion in college till I started dating the
college captain's girlfriend. When he found out, he made me run around
the field! Soon, I dumped both cricket and his girlfriend.
I
was a model before I passed college: Vishnu panwalla in Karol Bagh, from
whom I bought cigarettes, put up a poster of me in his kiosk and urged
me to become an actor. I realised I could earn money by modelling. My
first ad campaign was for Surya Bansi Suitings, with Jalal Agha's wife
Valerie. I made between Rs 150-350 per assignment and spent the money on
cigarettes and booze!
My father cheated me: When I passed out
of KMC with 43 per cent marks, my father agreed to let me join a travel
agency, and assured me that he would help me set up my own place. I
worked with Mercury Travels and Asian Travels. I made my contacts,
learnt about ticketing and visas and was all set to open my own agency
when my father backed out. I felt totally cheated.
I was
destined to be an actor: My friends had filled in the application form
for the Films and Television Institute of India, Pune, on my behalf.
When I cleared the interview, my friends coached me for the audition. I
was selected, but all my friends flunked the audition. They alleged that
my father had bribed the FTII board and still haven't forgiven me.

A chance friendship changed my life: I booked a ticket for Pune and
left with Rs 700. While on the train, I befriended Anil Verman, who was
also going to FTII. He suggested I accompany him to his sister's home in
Mumbai. Once there, I saw Vinod Khanna walk into the house. Anil's
sister was married to Vinod's brother Pramod! And with Vinod were Rakesh
and Rajesh Roshan! They came to drop us at FTII. We drove in a Ford,
beer bottles in hand. I felt like a star!
Mithun ragged me:
When we reached FTII, I walked up to this dark guy in a lungi and said,
'You wanna have some beer?' Mithun Chakrabarti declined. That night,
Mithun, Vijayendra Ghatge and another senior, took me into a room,
switched off the lights, splashed water on my face, chopped off my
newly-styled hair and threatened me with the worst if they caught me
drinking. Terrified, I didn't leave my room for the next four days.

I lived off Mithun: After the initial ragging, I was friends with
Mithun. Each night, as he sat down to eat, I would ask: 'Mithun, thoda
khana dega?' He never refused. Since Mithun had moved to Mumbai before
me, I shamelessly landed up at his rented place and forced him to pay
double the rent. There was a time when he told our common friends not to
disclose his whereabouts, lest I land up at his place!
Anil Verman eased my struggle: While at FTII, I did ad films. These credentials secured a role in Khel Khiladi Par
. The film didn't do well, but I was noticed. I stayed as a paying
guest for Rs 250 per month till Anil Verman gave me free accommodation
in an apartment, where I stayed for seven years.
I met Feroze
Khan because of a road accident: Ad campaigns gave me money to buy a
rickety Fiat. Once, while driving down Linking Road, a Mercedes crashed
into me. I rushed out to demand damages. But when Feroze Khan stepped
out of the Merc, I forgot everything and begged him for a role. There
were 500 people watching.
The tide turned in my favour: I featured in Darwaza and Ali Baba Marjina
, but that big break eluded me. Around then, scriptwriter K K Shukla,
who was Daisy Irani's husband, told me that Feroze Khan was looking for a
villain for Qurbani and
wanted a crazy guy who had banged into his car! Shukla called Feroze and
we rushed to his office. Later in the evening, he asked me to come
over. Feroze opened a bottle of champagne for me! I performed a mujra on
Aap Jaisa Koi for the high-fliers there. Qurbani made me a star.

Sunil Dutt gave me the name 'Shakti': Sunil and Nargis Dutt took a
liking for me. In fact, Sunil Dutt gave me the name 'Shakti'. I lived a
double life —one with the Dutts, wherein I accompanied them when they
went to pay Sanju's school fees, ate biryani and gosht — and the other
with Feroze, wherein I listened to international music, and socialised
with movers and shakers. I had two godfathers. When Rocky was released, my status as a good actor was confirmed. I worked with Manmohan Desai, Prakash Mehra, David Dhawan.

Parental opposition couldn't stop Shivangi and I from marrying: I first met Shivangi on the sets of Kismet
. She was 13 years younger to me, but we became friends. I had the
reputation of being a flirt. When Shivangi's parents found out, they
locked her up. She lied that she would have nothing to do with me, but
as soon as she got her freedom, Shivangi came to my house, and said she
wouldn't go back! We got married that very day —January 12, 1982. My
parents were shocked, but accepted Shivangi. But her parents refused to
have anything to do with us. It was only when Siddhanth was born that
the ice was broken. I also have a daughter, Shraddha.

I lost both my parents in one year: Fortunately, I made peace with my
father before he passed away a couple of years back. When he breathed
his last, he was proud of me. My mother also died in the same year — her
loss is irreparable. My temple at home has pictures of my parents and
God.

I am happiest when I make others laugh: Zakhmi Insaan
, the only movie in which I have played the hero, flopped within half
an hour of its release. Still, whether it is as a villain or comedian, I
love my roles. I have lived numerous lives, experienced various
emotions, but I have no regrets. That's the way I live life — with a
smile on my lips.

Salman Khan fails to beat Shah Rukh and Aamir Khan in the box office race

Bajrangi Bhaijaan earned lavishly, but it wasn’t enough…

Salman Khan’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan kept its promise with the box office last weekend. Everyone knew the film was going to be a smash hit and perhaps Salman’s biggest blockbuster. It earned lavishly at the box office which made everyone in the industry very happy. With only a handful of films in the first half of the year making money, BB’s massive collections worked as a balm. But despite earning copiously, Salman failed to defeat Shah Rukh Khan’s record. BB has earned 102.6 cr on its opening weekend whereas SRK’s Happy New Year took home 108. 86 cr. In fact, BB stayed behind Aamir’s Dhoom 3 as well which earned 107.61 cr!
Many were expecting a 30 crore opening day turnout but BB fell short of that mark and earned 27.25 crore, but Saturday and Sunday made people grin ear to ear with 36.60 cr and 38.7 cr respectively. But despite such plush collections, it couldn’t level Shah Rukh’s score. It also couldn’t match up to Aamir Khan’s Dhoom 3 first weekend total either.

But all you fans of Salman Khan out there, don’t lose heart. So what it couldn’t go beyond HNY’s total. Do remember that Salman has as many as eight 100 crore films in his kitty while Shah Rukh has five followed by Ajay Devgn. So it’s time to cheer him! To aaj ki party kisiki taraf se?!

Vidya Balan attended felicitation program held by Navbharat times in Mumbai. The actress looked gorgeous in maroon coloured saree. The actress was recently seen in film Hamari Adhuri Kahani opposite to actor Emraan Hashmi.

The actress looked flawless in her desi avatar. Vidya let her wavy hair down. The actress avoided adding extra bling to her outfit with heavy jewelry, and rather chose to go simple.

The Bajrangi Bhaijaan actor expressed his anger through a series of tweets last night warning fans that he’ll be off Twitter if they don’t stop fighting. He said in his tweets, “Messed up fighting over yr hero’s vit each other. make this journey beautiful, dint sign up fr this ugly twitter war n not a part of it . Continue it n I vil b off twitter. Came here to spread love, share sm thoughts hv fun vit fans not for them to insult my fraternity. Hut.”

While most B-townies have been going gaga over the film on Twitter, will this one pull in crowd to the cinema halls? More importantly will it witness a good opening or will Piku’s good run at the box office play a spoilsport? Read on to know…

Bombay Velvet starring Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Karan Johar has finally released after much delay. The big budget film was to come out last year however it got delayed and makers decided to release it this year. Ever since the Kashyap announced the project, it has been in the news for all the wrong reasons. However, since its coming together of RK and Ms Sharma for the very first time, everyone has been eagerly waiting for BV. Not to forget, the Dharma head honcho is making his acting debut with this one and that’s another reason why Bombay Velvet managed to to create some buzz. But here are few elements which could work against Anurag’s latest offering

Niche genre
While Ranbir and Anushka’s pairing is indeed appealing, Bombay Velvet belongs to a niche genre and though our industry has come a long way, the audience is still not accustomed to this space. And this could very well affect its box office prospect.
Piku and Gabbar Is Back dominating the box office
Also, Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan and Irrfan Khan starrer Piku which released last Friday is going rock steady at the box office. Gabbar Is Back starring Akshay Kumar in the lead is also pulling in crowd to the cinema halls despite running in theatres for two weeks. Though Bombay Velvet is one of the biggest releases of this year, it could face some competition from these two films as they have had a dream run at the ticket windows so far.

Expert Advice
We asked exhibitor-distributor Akshaye Rathi about Bombay Velvet’s fate and here’s what he said: “While Bombay Velvet doesn’t seem like an out and out commercial entertainer, the presence of Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma should certainly help it get a good draw at the box office over the opening weekend. Unfortunately, the music of the film has not worked at all and its a factor that will have an impact on the film’s business. Piku will certainly sustain well over the coming week, but it won’t make much of a dent in the business of Bombay Velvet, as the showcasing at cinemas will predominantly favour the later. Our industry has gone through a rough phase off late and for the sake of the trade, I hope the film does well.”
Well, since B-town celebs have been raving about Bombay Velvet, the expectations are high from the Anurag Kashyap directorial. But only time will tell how far the film will go in the numbers game. So all we can do now is – wait and watch

Controversial Advertisements That Landed Bollywood Celebrities In Trouble

Bollywood celebrities are looked up as role models and idols in our society. Fans learn and adapt things that their celebrity does. In fact, we are influenced by the Bollywood celebrities so much that if our favourite star promotes a certain product, we instantly put our faiths in it. Not only the product but often the innocent youth tries to copy the acts of such celebrities. Celebrities promote a certain brand not only to gain attention but also to build up their public image. But often this same advertisement gets them into the controversial circle that just keep evolving until it absorbs everything. Here are some advertisements that created controversies for our Bollywood celebrities. Take a look!

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan Bollywood’s leading actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan got caught into controversy after her new print ad for a jewellery brand showed a coloured child holding an umbrella for her. Aishwarya's this ad created racial controversy. A group of activists wrote an open letter slamming Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. The activists called the advertisement offensive as the ad showed a coloured child carrying an umbrella over Aishwarya's head, which they felt promoted child labour. After the controversy, the jewellery brand sent out a note saying that they will take the ad out of their campaign.

Akshay Kumar Bollywood's Khiladi Akshay Kumar and Mrs Khiladi Twinkle Khanna sparked controversy during a fashion show in March 2009. In the show, Akshay Kumar walked the ramp for a denim brand. Everything was going normally well but then Akshay asked his wife to unbutton his pants, and she did. For this act, a social worked filed a case of 'obscenity' against both the stars and denim brand. On this matter, the Bombay High Court ordered that the police could prosecute the couple and the director of the fashion show if need be. Shocking part was that throughout the controversy, Akshay refused to apologized saying that the act was spontaneous and not at all vulgar. Soon with time, the controversy faded into darkness.

Bipasha Basu and Dino Morea Bipasha Basu and her then partner Dino Moreo in 1998 did a commercial for an international undergarments label. In the advertisement, Dino was seen pulling Bipasha's panties with his teeth, while the advertisement's one-liner read; 'And you thought your appetite for indulgence could only be whetted by Swiss chocolates'. The ad was labelled as extreme for Indian sensibilities. Apart from audiences, the then minister of state for cultural affrairs, Anil Deshmukh expressed his disapprovement on the advertisment and soon enough the campaign was called off.

Amitabh Bachchan Amitabh Bachchan's candy commercial got Big B in a controversial toruble. In the ad, we saw Amitabh pelting stones at a mango tree. The Advertising Standard Council of India commented that looking at Amitabh's actions, children could imitate and get into harmful situations. The advertisement was later taken down. The same year, Big B revealed in an interactive session at IIM - Ahmedabad that he was soon ending his contract with a cola brand. This happened after a school girl questioned the actor's endorsement choices, in Jaipur. The girl questioned Amitabh why he promoted a brand which her teacher termed as poison and harmful. Amitabh Bachchan's confession led to a huge controversy. As the cola brand criticized the actor for having "pocketed Rs 24 crore for the ad" and at a time when the "contract was coming to an end" and then making the decision.

Shah Rukh Khan Bollywood's King Khan, Shah Rukh Khan got into a trouble for endorsing a skin lightening cream product a couple of years ago. The advertisement led to an online campaign titled 'Dark and Beautiful" which urged not only the star but also the brand to stop promoting and encouraging fairness creams. A lot of people backed the campaign's cause, including Aamir Khan, who said that he would never promote such products. But King Khan kept his mum on the whole controversy and still promotes the brand. Shah Rukh Khan is still associated with the brand.

Madhu Sapre and Milind Soman Madhu Sapre and Milind Soman, the very famous models of the 90's got into controversy for doing a shoe commerical in which they posed naked only with a python wrapped around their bodies, the python covered their modesty. The 1995's this ad created quite a buzz among women and animal rights activists. The activists protested outside Model's house. Not only that but some protestors even donated them clothes to cover up their bodies. Soon enough, the advertisement was pulled off. Madhu Sapre and Milind Soman were charged for indecency.

Arbaaz and Malaika Arora Khan Arbaaz Khan and Malaika Arora Khan got into trouble for a coffee commercial in 1993. The ad showed the two cozying up to each other and sharing some hot intimacy. Advertisement's one-liner read, "Real pleasure can't come in an 'instant'". Many people felt that Arbaaz and Malaika's expressions were too giving, suggestive and obsence, while the tagline implicated double meaning and misled the audiences. After a lot of legal proceedings, the advertisement was not taken down, but instead was directly banned.

Pooja Bedi and Marc Robinson Pooja Bedi and Marc Robinson gave fire to controversy after they appeared in a condom advertisement in 1991. The advertisement showed them taking a shower together. The advertisement was considered as one of the boldest on the Indian television and was banned by Doordarshan on the grounds that the ad hurt the conservative sensibilities and feeling of the Indian society.

Saif Ali Khan: I think Vishal Bhardwaj and I do really good work together

After playing Ishwar Langda Tyagi in 2006 crime drama film Omkara, actor Saif Ali Khan is “excited” to return in a Vishal Bhardwaj directorial, in which he will star alongside Shahid Kapoor

The 44-year-old actor, who just launched a new mobile, denied speculation that the untitled project is based on William Shakespeare’s tragedy King Lear.
“Yes, I’m working with him. I don’t know the script, but I don’t think its King Lear. It’s something else, so I’m excited to be working with him again. I think we do really good work together,” said Saif. The film will mark the first time he will be working with his wife Kareena Kapoor Khan’s former beau Shahid Kapoor.
Asked about his future projects, Saif said he has also signed on work with Sujoy Ghosh and Vikramaditya Motwane. “These are the three films (including the one with Bhardwaj) I’m looking forward to at the moment,” he added.
Meanwhile, Saif will next be seen in Phantom, which also stars Katrina Kaif. The upcoming counter terrorism drama film has wrapped up shooting and is all set to release on August 28.
